Since moving to New York, I have really seen places and things that I previously envisioned completely incorrectly in books set there. I must have seen this somewhere before, though--or else saw it at the Met sometime before since moving here and then forgot it again until today--because it is almost exactly what I imagined from the scene in The Book of Night with Moon where the cats are in the Met teaching Arhu the People's mythos using ehiff Egyptian mythology as visual aids. This is the one with Urrua "slicing up the Snake like an ehiff would cut up a salami." @dduane ...Right? It has to be.
(I also got the East River almost completely right in my mental image of the scene at the very end, except that it was far too close to Grand Central.)

Oooh how about Shane with a Vampire SO?
The farmer is a vampire (Shane)
I LOVE VAMPIRES OMG THIS WAS SM FUN
Someone teach me how to write short hesdcanons, because they always turn out to be wayyy too long :'D
TW: heavy language, mentions of alcohol, mentions of blood
Gender: neutral
Shane's been making vampire jokes since day one without even know you're actually one. Everytime he makes them you're practically getting a heart attack since you don't really want the town members to know. The possibility of being chased down by torches was not on your agenda.
But come on! There is no easy way to make it not obvious.
You won the egg hunt just to get that straw hat, because it shields your face completely.
Not to mention that even on cloudy days you seem to try to protect your skin. Some residents asked if you're maybe allergic to the sunlight and you just went with that. Marnie that sweet woman took the liberty upon herself and offered to ask Harvey for help, but you quickly shut that idea down saying that because of your past you don't want to make a big deal out of it.
Shane though. Oof.
"What are you? A fucking vampire?"
You freeze, unsure on what to answer, but soon enough you notice that he's just meaning it as a joke or a way to provoke you.
As you two become friends, he one day decides to bring some pizza over. You've been isolating yourself the last couple of days and he is a bit worried. Knowing you you're probably fully invested in work and your farm.
But when he arrives no one is outside on the fields and your front door is slightly open. He hears glass breaking inside so naturally he rushes in like a whole SWAT team with nothing but a frozen pizza as a weapon. He is fully intending on blinding potential enemies with the salami pieces.
"Shane?"
"What the FUCK is going on? Are you hurt?"
What he thought might be an intruder was actually just you being clumsy, but he does notice how you're holding your arm with a painful look on your face. Good luck getting him off your back now.
Your sleeve got ripped apart while building a fence and the light burned your skin, but you tell Shane that it's from starting the fire place. Everything indicates that you haven't even touched the fire place and it's a hot day anyways. You got him suspicious here, but he doesn't say anything. There must be a reason why you'd lie and he'd be damned if he doesn't find out.
Usually he couldn't care less even if someone comes up with such a bad lie. He doesn't have the energy to play detective, but with you it's different. You're one of the very few people who showed him kindness no matter how shitty he behaved and if you're having issues then he wants to help you out.
The next week he sees you stumbling through town and barely holding onto the wall of the bridge. At some point it seems like you're about to fall into the river any second and he runs over to hold you up. The fact that he's running late to his shift is long forgotten.
"I'm bringing you home."
"No, Shane, I promise I'm fine. I just feel a bit light headed."
"Bullshit."
He's way stronger than he looks and while he's carrying you back you to Harvey's clinic he realizes how dead you look. More dead than usually of course.
The closer he gets you to the clinic though the more you try to get out of his grip.
"Stop it, you need a fucking doctor."
"No, please."
Shane stops dead in his tracks upon hearing how desperate you sound. He's never heard you beg like this and his stomach is practically turning upside down from all the concern.
"Carry me home and I will explain everything to you. I'm done with lying and hiding."
You're hallucinating. That must be it. But something about your tone and your pleading eyes that he barely makes out behind those dark sun glasses make him obey to your wish.
As he lays you down into your bed he gets you a glass of cold water, but you almost smack it out of his hands, pointing towards the fridge. Confused, he looks inside, but can't see anything besides the usual vegetables and some left overs. Then, behind all these items, he spots something dark. Something red.
In the next moment you're next to him, grabbing that red liquid and ripping the package open like he usually does with booze when he's going through a particularly nasty time.
"This better be strawberry juice."
Deep down he knows it's not and he isn't sure what he feels watching you chug that entire bag in one go. With anyone else he'd most likely be disgusted or mortified, but the feelings he has for you, ones that he can't quite describe yet, are way too deep to feel anything negative towards you. His mind is still occupied with images of you nearly falling off the bridge and not being able to stand on your own two feet.
But you sure got some explaining to do and you promised to tell him everything after all. There's no way to get yourself out of this mess. You're scared of Shane's reaction. You don't want to ruin whatever you guys have going on, but what you don't know is how deep that bond between you goes. You have no idea that Shane reached a point where he would go through fire for you, but in your defense he's not the type to really show that.
He takes the information pretty well and with humor too. Internally he's screaming a bit though, because OMG HE WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG?!
"Are you telling me that...this is the skin of a killer?"
"Shane, stop."
"How long have you been 17?"
"I'm not 17 and stop with the Twilight references."
"Can you read my mind?"
"THIS IS SERIOUS-"
"So you have visions?"
You're not even sure if you wanna question his oddly deep knowledge of those movies.
You explain to him that most vampires nowadays live off of blood donations and the people donating know where it goes to. The issue with you now is that it's difficult getting these donations since Pelican Town is quite isolated from the cities and you can't ask Harvey to receive them for you, because he doesn't know that vampires even exist.
You've been holding back with your drinking, but it's affecting your health badly which is the reason why you almost fucking died there at the bridge.
Without a second thought Shane offers you to give you his blood, BUT there is a problem with that as well. Considering the amount of alcohol in his system his blood would make you even sicker than no blood at all.
Now he has the right motivation to stop drinking! And it works!
You drink it directly from his wrist though, because you don't really have the right equipment for taking it differently.
Shane has to hide the bite marks otherwise Marnie thinks he's gotten into something worse than booze.
He's a ride or die, okay. He backs up every made up story of yours to not make anyone in town suspicious.
You have to expect lots of teasing from his side as well and I'm not only talking about twilight references.
"What happens if I throw garlic at you?"
"Fuck around and find out, bitch. I suggest that you don't even start fucking around."
You could serve him some vegetable he doesn't like and he would yell "THE POWER OF YOBA COMPELLS YOU"
Absolutely adores your fangs. Sometimes they're super fucking adorable when you shoot him a bright smile and other times he finds them so hot that his knees turn into pudding.
Don't get me started on the fact that you can crush rocks with your bare hands.
Doesn't know if he should be very scared or very in love.

Stinky Fuck Swag Bracket B Side A: Round 1, Match 9
Raphael Hamato (Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) VS Gobber (How To Train Your Dragon)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut!
Raphael Hamato:
He is STINKY. Not only have him and his brothers grown up in the sewer they literally willingly GO IN THE NASTY SEWER WATER THAT IS GREENER THAN ANYTHING I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE AND TREAT IT LIKE A LAZY RIVER. In that same episode he covered himself in unlabeled brown sewer sludge that I. don't really. Wanna figure out what it was. On top of that he trains and exercises more often than literally anyone on the show and I think that makes his stinky by default. And it isn't just me or the fandom who knows he is stinky. THE SHOW KNOWS HE IS STINKY. They can smell him and it is mentioned multiple times. It starts even in the first episode so the boy is stinky from the beginning. he has various different stinks according to the show, including a fear stink (he gets defensive about this one), victory stink, and a "sneaking up on people" stink. There are a lot more but I Can Not Remember when they were mentioned but he is STINKY. He ate WET SALAMI that was on the GROUND. MULTIPLE TIMES. Unrelated but thought I would share. Animals hate him. I wonder if it's because he is stinky. It probably is. He is a silly guy and I love him but he is a silly *stinky* guy.
he has certain stinks for certain situations and emotions (victory stink, fear stink, amazement stink, sneaking-up-on-people stink) also one time he shoved his face into the smelliest flower in the world wtf maybe bc he’s used to stinkiness 🤨🤔 he’s my stinky little meow meow
He's a snapping turtle, and stress causes him to stink (some kind of fucked up defense mechanism). During the show he screams "WE DON'T ABOUT MY FEAR STINK!". He also reguraly swims in the NY sewer "water". He lives in the sewers, eats primaly pizza, is a teenager and his body produces especially stinky sweat
constantly said has '____ stink' ie fear, happiness, 'good to see you' etc etc hes so silly
Gobber:
He refused to bathe.

Every single piece of footwear that Gale owned had been taken and hidden in places where footwear should not be.
Wyll's scrollwork had been reorganized and refiled on the floor of his tent.
Barcus Wroot had been trapped inside the travelers' chest three times now. He had elected, at this point, to just stay there until all of this was over.
The sausages and salami had been stolen from the camp supplies. A picnic had been assembled for Scratch and the owlbear cub--complete with a fiddle that no one could play and a pepper grinder neither of them could use.
All sandwiches had vanished entirely.

Some personal grievance was taken up with the clasps used to fasten the bedrolls. They were chronically undone and when re-latched they would not stay that way for above three minutes.
Shadowheart's incense had been replaced with Karlach's cigars. And vice versa.
All blood spattered camp clothing had been deposited in the wash basin with a bar of the new soap. That was at least marginally helpful, if wasteful.
Vases of many different shapes had been stolen from everywhere, arranged by size, and used as a cacophonous xylophone.
Having access to cutlery was a distant dream from a time that no longer existed.
Alfira and Lakrissa had briefly visited and encouraged the damn thing. Given it a flower.
Tent doors and overhangs had to be checked, because traps were being set. Karlach was initially surprised, but in the end mostly amused once they'd gotten the bucket unstuck from her horn and off of her head.
A throne had been built entirely out of pillows and blankets. Clive had been placed on top of it.
Every non-finesse weapon, excepting those belonging to Lae'zel, had been dumped in a nearby river at least once.
Lae'zel's camp had, in fact, been left mostly unmolested. However, the mindflayer training dummy was now wearing a straw hat with a bright blue ribbon.
Withers was also wearing a hat. A floppy, wizardly one. He did not seem to mind. Or possibly notice.
They had recently located the nexus of chaos. And now Gale was sitting cross-legged and barefoot in the grass, watching it take a short rest on top of a pile of books it had collected. Gale knew by now that monitoring would not prevent further anarchy, but it made him feel somewhat better to know where it was, even briefly.
It had, from somewhere, acquired a bright red bow.
Gale heard someone else approaching. With a tired sigh Wyll dropped to the ground beside him. The man was damp. Probably he'd had to fish something else important out of the river.
"How long does it take for polymorph to wear off?" Wyll asked him wearily.
"An hour," Gale said, from behind clasped hands.
Wyll almost started in surprise at the answer. "It has been far longer than..."
"There have been recorded phenomenon where it lasts longer," Gale continued. "It has to do with the transformed state being a particularly suitable shape for the soul."
They both regarded the creature in front of them.
"Honk," said Astarion.

This is the start of a series. The rest of the story is on AO3.

Vacation recap, feel free to skip
Andy and I spent seven nights at a Sandals resort in Curaçao and it was incredibly expensive and so, so great. 5 stars, would recommend.
The resort is the newest Sandals resort, and apparently their opening a few years ago was delayed and pretty rocky because of covid so early reviews were decidedly mixed. Everything seems to have been ironed out and from our perspective everything was super smooth.
We flew out from a big airport an hour away at 6 am so the trip started with dropping the kids off the night before and getting up at 2. We were at the resort in time for a late lunch and they had our stuff brought to our room and a cheese plate and wine and balloons and a card for our anniversary in the room when we got up there. The staff were incredibly attentive and they all seemed invested in keeping the guests happy. They all were cheerful and pleasant and went out of their way to make things as easy for us as possible.
Our room looked out over a gorgeous garden with a peek of the ocean beyond and a sort of lazy river pool below us, which was incredible. It felt secluded and the garden was always abuzz with tons of birds and butterflies. We spent a bunch of time in the mornings out on the balcony with coffee watching the hummingbirds and these big yellow butterflies that were the exact same color as some of the flowers, so it looked like the flowers would just pick up and flutter away.
The resort is pretty large so they have bicycle racks scattered around and you can just hop on a bike and leave it wherever you decide you're done with it. The main pool was lovely and they have entertainment going next to it all day. The "quiet" pool isn't actually far enough away from the entertainment to be quiet but there are other smaller pools scattered around that are very quiet. The beach is on a channel, protected by a dock, with tons of beach chairs and palapas. There's another area of beach to walk on that's too rocky and rough for swimming but it's very pretty to look out at -- pure turquoise water that drops of suddenly into dark blue.
The food and drink are all included and very good. There were a few perplexing things (a "charcuterie tray" that included one very thick slice of garlic bread and slices of salami wrapped around chutney to make little pouches???) but there's a solid variety and the service was usually very good, especially for the number of people they're feeding. They have three tiny restaurants in food trucks that are open most of the day and they were so good. Each restaurant has its own style (sushi, Italian, Greek, South American, etc.) and they do a great job with the menus. We were asked at every single meal about allergies or food issues and they took it very seriously. There is room to improve in their desserts but my standards there are very high. There are bars scattered all over and most of them have signature drinks that are delicious.
One of the days we were there we hired a guy through a local tour company to take us all over the island and it was amazing. We saw a million things we'd never have known to even look for and we snorkeled with sea turtles and got fresh coconuts and ate an amazing meal at a little hole in the wall kind of place. It was supposed to be eight hours but we were having a great time and he kept wanting to show us other stuff so we were out for ten full hours and were exhausted when we got back.
The trip home was annoying -- delays and multiple gate changes on both legs of the flight, so we got home at 3:30 a.m. instead of midnight, but it could have been a whole lot worse and we were already planning on the girls spending the extra night at my parents' so we were the only ones impacted by it. The girls had a great week with my folks and it seemed easier on them than we expected. We FaceTimed with them for a few minutes every day and that def helped.
The best price you'll ever get at a Sandals is if you book another trip while you're still there, so we did. You can book up to two years out and you can change your details for most of that time so we have almost two years to figure it all out, but this trip was so lovely that we both very much want to do it again. It's wildly impulsive of us to commit without blocking out budget and childcare and stuff ahead of time but this trip was so great that we were like "we'll figure it out, let's just do it."
Overall, it was an incredible week, and it was really great to have so much time with Andy to just hang out and have fun. I'm so glad we did it. The end.

@fadedpath / a starter!
Compared to dealing with his 'peers', scouting was downright relaxing. The Salaminian forces obeyed him unquestioningly, and the great majority of the footfolk from anyone else's forces, if he was allocated them, mostly did as well. They only knew him as one of the two princes of Salamis, after all, and thus someone important enough to obey.
It was anyone above that that might make things exhausting, and so Teucer had come to appreciate these moments, though it wasn't very exciting to patrol their side of the river for stray Trojan soldiers.
Usually, it wasn't.
Usually, all to be found on the sea-ward side of the Scamander was abandoned fields, both those which had been used for grazing of Troy's incomprehensibly vast horse herds, and those that had been tended for agriculture. Still might have been, especially with this conflict dragging out past the first year of resources they'd had with them, and with a few starvation months behind them, if they didn't now have the Oinotropoi to supply them with grain, wine, and oil.
So, usually, this was a relaxing if boring way to spend an afternoon if they weren't making an attempt at the city.
"Well, someone's dared themselves quite far from their hole," Teucer called across the river, leaning forward against his horse's neck.
A group of Trojans, led by - he was rather sure, hard to get a good look at anyone from down the ground when the Trojans stayed on the wall - their crown prince. Hektor.
His cousin.
Teucer eyed the group with narrow consideration. They were even in number, but the Trojans had bows and arrows - only he had that among his Salaminians - though withdrawing out of reach would eliminate that slight advantage. This far upstream, too, with Thymbra in the very near distance on the Trojan side of the Scamander, there was no good place to ford the river, for either of them.

L'amor che move il sole e l'altre stelle.
The love that moves the sun and the other stars. These are the last words written by the poet Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy. This sentence is perfect in your eyes for two reason. One: Dante was born in Florence, the city where are you in this moment; and two: the phrase talk about pure love, a type of love that you feel for Rosé, your girlfriend. The next promotion with her group was not too much far in time, so in anticipation of the lost time, you have proposed a madness to her: flying to Florence for a week. Florence is a beautiful italian city, full of art and culture, a perfect place for an artist like Rosie. At first she was not sure about your proposal, but after your discourse about the food that she could try only there, she accepted. So, in less than a week, you two have booked the flight and the hotel, got your things packed and left on vacation in Tuscany.
In these days you have done all sort of activities. You have tried the famous Schiacciata, a type of breast stuffed with salami and various condiments. You have visited the Uffizi, one of the most beautiful Art museum, containing works of the Primitives and the Renaissance. You have walked on Ponte Vecchio, a bridge where the lovers put padlocks, to symbolize their eternal love. While you were throwing in the river the Key of your padlock, Rosé looked in your eyes and said "I will love you forever, Y/N". That was one of those scenes that you will remember even when you will be old.
Time passed. It's your last day in Florence and your plan was just walking in the city, to live its atmosphere to the last. In this moment you and Rosé are eating something in an intimate, open-air venue, just relaxing and enjoying each other's company. The sun was in the sky, but it was not too hot. You were looking to Rosie, mesmerized by her beauty. Even without makeup she was more beautiful that anything that you have ever seen. You were so lucky to be the one that can call her "Mine".
"The sun is nice, isn't it?" asked your girlfriend enjoying the warmth of that big star. Before to answer her, you took her hand in yours, so that she would look at you. "Park Chaeyoung, you are my sun. You light up my days and keep me warm up with your love. I love you Rosie" you finished, kissing her knuckles. She was astonished by your words. The way you spoke to her and looked at her while you were doing it moved her. "Just promise a thing, Y/N. When we will get married - because that will happen - promise me that we’ll have our honeymoon here. Alright?". To those words you were moved too. You nodded and answered "I promise you, Rosie. I swear on the padlock we put on the bridge and...on the Schiacciata we ate". You both laughed. After your conversation you were not afraid of the promotion or the distance. You knew that that moment was the point when your forever started.
Who know that Dante knew if a day in his city there was going to be a couple able to embody that pure love he talked about?
L'amore che move il sole e l'altre stelle.

Made it out to the @gretnamarketplace this past weekend and was just in time to score @lapetitesophiepatisserie pastries before they sold out! Kouign-amann, pecan sticky bun, chocolate croissant, ham and cheese croissant, and fire roasted Red pepper and salami croissant. So glad I don't have to trek all the way to River Ridge to enjoy some of the finest laminated pastry in the GNO. 🥐

Raemis Emberheart
Tumblr media
OC's as obscure references
I got tagged by @tatterings to talk about Raemis Emberheart.
He has twin sister, but he's older by 5 minutes.
ANIMAL: Anything larger than him. Big cats, bears, moose, etc.
COLORS: Periwinkle and River Moss Green
MONTH: July
SONGS: Spiracle by Flower Face
NUMBER: 69
PLANTS: The Watchful Tree - Birches or Aspens
SMELLS: The smell of the earth after it rains and the sun is shining.
GEMSTONE: Opal
TIME OF DAY: Sunset, specifically when the sky looks like a watercolor painting of purples and reds and blues.
SEASON: Summer.
PLACES: The cliffs that overlook the forest of his home. Most of his strength in his hands and body came from climbing up and down rocky crevices to get high enough to sit and watch the wind go through the trees while the clouds passed overhead.
FOOD: Loves something rich, fatty, and salty. Like a good Pho.
DRINKS: If energy drinks existed in this world, he'd absolutely crush one of those 300mg energy drinks.
He's a spearmint tea drinker with a hint of vanilla added to it. Refreshing both cold and warm.
ELEMENT: Water.
ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: Libra (Very much so)
SEASONINGS: Loves garlic (sorry Astarion), or any seasoning that is spicy. He likes a good kick.
SKY: At sunset like a watercolor painting of purples and reds and blues or the sky JUST after a heavy rainstorm with fluffy clouds.
WEATHER: He loves a hot day. He could spend the whole day by the water eating, drinking, playing, sweaty fucking.
MAGICAL POWER: Flight.
WEAPONS: He's quite gifted with his hands (He's a lover, not a fighter, except that he is a monk and fights a lot). But he uses anything available. Once knocked someone out with a massive salami and that's not an innuendo.
SOCIAL MEDIA: If it existed he'd likely be on Instagram the most posting about all of his adventures and not-so-subtle thirst traps.
MAKEUP PRODUCT: Chapstick (priority) and a little bit of a smoky eye, he loves his fingernails painted, but since he uses his hands so much it's usually chipped.
CANDY: Rich, dark chocolate with caramel and a bit of sea salt.
METHOD OF LONG DISTANCE TRAVEL: He loves a good jaunt through the woods and making his own paths, but wouldn't mind reaching his destination a little faster and not getting lost.
ART STYLE: Art Nouveau (just like Rylmyr)
FEAR: Letting people down and being a disappointment.
MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURE: Mermaids
PIECE OF STATIONARY: A very expensive, hand crafted feather quill.
THREE EMOJIS: 😊💪🏼⛺
CELESTIAL BODY: An Asteroid Belt
Tagging @sunserenade and @tavdraws for their OCs if they have one they would like to share!!

The Piñon Pine - The Indians Own Tree
When I section-hiked the PCT from Tehachapi to Walker Pass several Mays ago, as we neared the northern end of that trip we took a lunch break one day under a grove of piñon pines.  As we reached into our pack for our usual lunch of cheese, rye crackers, and salami, we began to notice that the forest floor was littered with pine nuts.  While some had become food for rodents, squirrels, and other foraging animals since dropping to the ground the prior autumn, most were so very edible. Soon we were each on our hands and knees collecting cones and harvesting their delectable contents ($29 a pound at our local co-op). I ate my fill and packed an empty bag with more nuts which I brought home with me when I left the trail.  This is David Foscue’s story of the pine nut.

Piñons are coveted for their nutitious seeds.  One pound of seeds may contain 3,000 calories. The pine nuts were collected by Indians as stores for the winter. Listen again to Muir: “This is undoubtably the more important food-tree on the Sierra, and furnishes the Mono, Carson, and Walker River Indians with more and better nuts than all the other species together.  It is the Indian’s own tree, and many a white many they have killed for cutting it down.”
A diligent collector in the prime collecting time can gather up to seventy pounds of the seeds.  Humans, of course, are not the only beneficiaries of the piñon’s largess. Pine nuts are a favorite of many animals from the piñon jay to the pack rat — it is reported that over forty pounds of nuts may be found in a pack rat’s cache.  The wide popularity of piñon nuts is a matter of survival, for the seeds of the piñon lack wings and depend on animals for distribution.
The piñon of the Sierras is single-needled pine. It is a mutation of the piñon found further east on which the needles appear in bunches of two.   The two-needled piñon is subject to infestation by the piñon spindle gall midge which appears to have evolved with the tree.  The insect lays its eggs on the flat leaves, when they hatch the larvae crawl into the crotch between paired needles.  The irritation caused by the tiny larvae simulates the plant to grow tissue forming a gall over the larval wound.  The gall covers the wound but it also protects the enclosed larvae.
The gall midge evolved to inhabit the single-needled piñon which lack the needle crotches to shelter the larvae.  According to Ronald Lanner, the single-needle piñon developed from the twin-needled variety but “one of the potential needle sites is suppressed by the … mutation.  Our gall midge neutralizes the mutation.  The feeding of the larvae suppresses the needle-suppression mechanism, allowing both of the potential needles to develop, though they reach only a fraction of their full length.  The needles are galled and the larvae grow up in the same type of needle-crotch home as those in … two needled pines.”  Needles at unaffected locations on the tree remain single.
Kit Carson, John C. Frémont and the Piñon Nut
The piñon played a supporting role in two dramas that have become part of the lore of the PCT.  One involved “The Pathfinder,” John C. Frémont, extraordinary adventurer and the first Republican presidential candidate.  The other tale involves the ill-fated Donner party.
Frémont, and his scout, Kit Carson, led the first recorded winter crossing of the Sierras.  What Frémont expected to take a week became an ordeal of five weeks.  As they faced the Sierras their supplies were running low.  Fortunately Indians supplied them with pine nuts!  On January 24, 1844, Frémont wrote:
A man was discovered running towards the camp as we were about to start this morning, who proved to be an Indian of rather advanced age–a sort of forlorn hope, who seemed to have been worked up into the resolution of visiting the strangers who were passing through the country. He seized the hand of the first man he met as he came up, out of breath, and held on, as if to assure himself of protection. He brought with him, in a little skin bag, a few pounds of the seeds of a pine-tree … .   We purchased them all from him.

The Donner Party - Rescued by Pine Nuts?
George Donner’s group was not as successful in its attempt to cross the Sierras two winters later.  In a snow storm, the party reached what is now known as Donner Lake in early November 1846.   Attempts to reach the pass failed and the party returned to the lake and settled in.  Although many of their animals froze providing unexpected food, their provisions were soon exhausted and the new settlers faced slow starvation.
On December 16 a group of fifteen left the lake in an attempt to cross the mountains for help.  Using the same term Frémont applied to the old Indian who first provided him piñon nuts, they called themselves the “Forlorn Hope Party.”  Death reduced the group to seven.  As we now know, the dead sustained the living.
The forlorn and depleted party finally came to an Indian village on January 10.  The Indians provided acorn bread to the party but the group was so weakened their strength could not be restored.  The leader, William Eddy, became sick on the bread.  Donner’s Daughter, Eliza, writes how Eddy regained his strength:
… the chief with much difficulty procured for Mr. Eddy, a gill of pine nuts which the latter found so nutritious that the following morning, on resuming travel, he was able to walk without support.
Eddy walked fifteen miles that day to a small settlement where he was able to organize a party to rescue the other six surviving members of  Forlorn Hope.  Eventually three rescue parties, including one led by Eddy, were organized to return to Donner Lake.  Forty-six members of the Donner party were rescued.  Forty-two did not make it.  The toll surely would have been greater but for the pine nuts given by the Indians to Eddy.
Think about the Donner party the next time you sprinkle piñon pine nuts on your salad.

We’re camping this weekend. This time the dogs stayed home with someone at our house. If Oliver knew how much I do not miss him he’d weep. I love those dogs but they are a handful in and around the trailer.
The nearby towns are fun. The Root River rails-to-trail bike path runs through the area. We pedaled to Whalan, where there’s a cute little pie shop. From there we rolled over to Lanesboro, a fantastic small town. Sheila and I have been there a number of times, mostly staying in bed & breakfast places. Sometimes we drive and bring bicycles, once or twice we rode motorcycles to get there.
Three other couples, neighbors and friends of ours, are here with their trailers too. Then we ran into Sheila’s cousin and her husband who six spaces away from us. Total surprise when I’m walking around, checking out RVs, and someone shouts “Bob!!!” I’m glad she saw me. It would have been funny if we didn’t run across each other and found out days or weeks later that they were here at the same time.
The pictures above are Lanesboro. I love the old brick, two story buildings. There is the gift shop with obligatory drinking, family, or cabin related plaques and wall hangings. Later today we’ll go tubing on the Root River.

Anytime I’m in a small town I like to check out any dive bars. This place had glasses with advertising on them. There was a meat raffle. One of our friends won some beef jerky, a meat and cheese salami, and a whole chicken. Because we would be bicycling home she gave the chicken to one of the regulars at the bar.

I love eating dinner, sitting in a chair by a fire, while hanging out with these people. The sandwich is beef brisket one of the guys smoked for 16 hours before bringing it for our dinner last night. It was amazingly delicious. That folding wagon we bought has turned out to be pretty useful.

Friedrich Hölderlin, "Mnemosyne (second version)", translated by David Constantine.
"We are a sign with no interpretation
Painless we are and abroad
Have almost lost our language.
For when over mankind
There is quarrelling in heaven and the moons
Go violently, the sea
Speaks too and rivers
Must seek themselves a way. But One
There is without a doubt. He
Can change it any day. He hardly needs
Law. And the leaves resound, the oaks move in the wind
Then beside the snows. For the gods in the heavens
Cannot do everything. Mortals indeed
Reach sooner to the abyss. So the echo turns
With them. Time
Is long but what is true
Will happen.
But the things we love? We see
Sunshine on the ground and dry dust
And deep with shadows the woods and the smoke
Flowers from the roofs about the old crowns
Of towers, peaceably; and lost in the air
The larks trill and under the daylight
Shepherded forth the sheep of heaven graze.
And snow like lilies of the valley
Denoting nobleness
Wherever it be is shining with
The Alps' green meadows
Half and half where
Speaking of the cross set for the dead
Along the way a traveller went
The steep road and
The other with him, but what is this?
At the fig tree my
Achilles died
And Ajax lies
By the caves near the sea
By streams that neighbour Scamander.
The spirit bold in him in a roaring of the winds, after
His native Salamis' sweet
Custom, great
Ajax died abroad
Patroclus however in the king's armour. And others died,
Many besides. By their own hands
Sad, many, wild in the soul, but forced to
By gods in the end, but the others
Standing in their fate, in the field. For he riles the gods
Who will not compose himself
And spare his soul, although he must. And grief
Likewise goes wrong."
