Week in Review
October 23rd-29th
Welcome to Fragile Practice, where I attempt to make something of value out of stuff I have to read.
My future plan is to do longer-form original pieces on interesting topics or trends. For now, I'm going to make the weekly reviews habitual and see if I have any time left.
Tumblr media
Technology
OpenAI forms team to study ‘catastrophic’ AI risks, including nuclear threats - Tech Crunch; Kyle Wiggers
OpenAI launched a new research team called AI Safety and Security to investigate the potential harms of artificial intelligence focused on AI alignment, AI robustness, AI governance, and AI ethics.
Note: Same energy as “cigarette company funds medical research into smoking risks”.
Artists Allege Meta’s AI Data Deletion Request Process Is a ‘Fake PR Stunt’ - Wired; Kate Knibbs
Artists who participated in Meta’s Artificial Intelligence Artist Residency Program accused the company of failing to honor their data deletion requests and claim that Meta used their personal data to train its AI models without their consent.
Note: Someday we will stop being surprised that corporate activities without obvious profit motive are all fake PR stunts.
GM and Honda ditch plan to build cheaper electric vehicles - The Verge; Andrew J. Hawkins
General Motors and Honda cancel their joint venture to develop and produce cheaper electric vehicles for the US market, citing the chip shortage, rising costs of battery materials, and the changing market conditions.
Note: What are the odds this isn’t related to the 7 billion dollars the US government announced to create hydrogen hubs.
'AI divide' across the US leaves economists concerned - The Register; Thomas Claburn
A new study by economists from Harvard University and MIT reveals a significant gap in AI adoption and innovation across different regions in the US.
The study finds that AI usage is highest in California's Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area, but was also noted in Nashville, San Antonio, Las Vegas, New Orleans, San Diego, and Tampa, as well as Riverside, Louisville, Columbus, Austin, and Atlanta.
Nvidia to Challenge Intel With Arm-Based Processors for PCs - Bloomberg; Ian King
Nvidia is using Arm technology to develop CPUs that would challenge Intel processors in PCs, and which could go on sale as soon as 2025.
Note: I am far from an NVIDIA fan, but I’m stoked for any amount of new competition in the CPU space.
New tool lets artists fight AI image bots by hiding corrupt data in plain sight - Engadget; Sarah Fielding
A team at the University of Chicago created Nightshade, a tool that lets artists fight AI image bots by adding undetectable pixels into an image that can alter how a machine-learning model produces content and what that finished product looks like.
Nightshade is intended to protect artists work and has been tested on both Stable Diffusion and an in-house AI built by the researchers.
IBM's NorthPole chip runs AI-based image recognition 22 times faster than current chips - Tech Xplore; Bob Yirka
NorthPole combines the processing module and the data it uses in a two-dimensional array of memory blocks and interconnected CPUs, and is reportedly inspired by the human brain.
NorthPole can currently only run specialized AI processes and not training processes or large language models, but the researchers plan to test connecting multiple chips together to overcome this limitation.
Apple’s $130 Thunderbolt 4 cable could be worth it, as seen in X-ray CT scans - Ars Technica; Kevin Purdy
Note: These scans are super cool. And make me feel somewhat better about insisting on quality cables. A+.
Tumblr media
The Shifting Web
On-by-default video calls come to X, disable to retain your sanity - The Register; Brandon Vigliarolo
Video and audio calling is limited to anyone you follow or who is in your address book, if you granted X permission to comb through it.
Calling other users also requires that they’ve sent at least one direct message to you before.
Only premium users can place calls, but everyone can receive them.
Google Search Boss Says Company Invests to Avoid Becoming ‘Roadkill’ - The New York Times; Nico Grant
Google’s senior vice president overseeing search said that he sees a world of threats that could humble his company at any moment.
Google Maps is getting new AI-powered search updates, an enhanced navigation interface and more - Tech Crunch; Aisha Malik
Note: These AI recommender systems are going to be incredibly valuable advertising space. It is interesting that Apple decided to compete with Google in maps but not in basic search, but has so far not placed ads in the search results.
Reddit finally takes its API war where it belongs: to AI companies - Ars Technica; Scharon Harding
Reddit met with generative AI companies to negotiate a deal for being paid for its data, and may block crawlers if no deal is made soon.
Note: Google searches for info on Reddit often seem more effective than searching Reddit itself.  If they are unable to make a deal, and Reddit follows through, it will be a legitimate loss for discoverability but also an incredibly interesting experiment to see what Reddit is like without Google.
Bandcamp’s Entire Union Bargaining Team Was Laid Off - 404 Media; Emanuel Maiberg
Bandcamp’s new owner (Songtradr) offered jobs to just half of existing employees, with cuts disproportionately hitting union leaders. Every member of the union’s eight-person bargaining team was laid off, and 40 of the union's 67 members lost their jobs.
Songtradr spokesperson Lindsay Nahmiache claimed that the firm didn’t have access to union membership information.
Note: This just sucks. Bandcamp is rad, and it’s hard to imagine it continuing to be rad after this. I wonder if Epic had ideas for BC that didn’t work out.
Tumblr media
Surveillance & Digital Privacy
Mozilla Launches Annual Digital Privacy 'Creep-o-Meter'. This Year's Status:  'Very Creepy' - Slashdot
Mozilla gave the current state of digital privacy a 75.6/100, with 100 being the creepiest.
They measured security features, data collection, and data sharing practices of over 500 gadgets, apps, and cars to come up with their score.
Every car Mozilla tested failed to meet their privacy and security standards.
Note: It would be great if even one auto brand would take privacy seriously.
EPIC Testifies in Support of Massachusetts Data Privacy and Protection Act -Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC)
Massachusetts version of ADPPA.
Note: While it may warm my dead heart to see any online privacy protections in law, scrambling to do so in response to generative AI is unlikely to protect Americans in any meaningful way from the surveillance driven form of capitalism we’ve all been living under for decades.
Complex Spy Platform StripedFly Bites 1M Victims - Dark Reading
StripedFly is a complex platform disguised as a cryptominer and evaded detection for six years by using a custom version of EternalBlue exploit, a built-in Tor network tunnel, and trusted services like GitLab, GitHub, and Bitbucket to communicate with C2 servers and update its functionality.
iPhones have been exposing your unique MAC despite Apple's promises otherwise - Ars Technica
A privacy feature which claimed to hide the Wi-Fi MAC address of iOS devices when joining a network was broken since iOS 14, and was finally patched in 17.1, released on Wednesday.
Note: I imagine this bug was reported a while ago, but wasn’t publically reported until the fix was released as a term of apple’s bug bounty program.
What the !#@% is a Passkey? - Electronic Frontier Foundation
Note: I welcome our passkey overlords.

My cousin moved from San Francisco to a very rural area on the East Coast partially to be closer to her parents, but also because she felt like she couldn't achieve progress staying in an already progressive area. She's an out lesbian and it's very important to her to be out and loud where she can. But like... no one paid her to do that. She went because she wanted to. Lmao rural communities hate big fancy new housing developments and neighborhoods, they would not respond well to liberals moving en masse to their areas to elect Dems. Shit I live in a progressive town and I get mad when people move here and the city grows!
I mean, part of the issue is the idea that these towns or areas need "improving", oftentimes in a very Victorian-esque kind of overtone when talking about the lesser areas, and there's often not much respect for or understanding of the history and culture and dynamic in those areas.
Like one of the ways that progressives and liberals failed in North Dakota a lot was because of that sentiment, that failure to connect with people and not come across as "we're importing Civilization and Ideas and Improvement to these godforsaken areas, you poor unfortunate souls", and just acting like they were inherently right and the only option.
Corporate money and conservative power and influences are also a huge part, but so much of the time liberals and progressives score own goals and concede territory.

Kevin Hart gets serious about financial inclusion at Disrupt
New Post has been published on https://medianwire.com/kevin-hart-gets-serious-about-financial-inclusion-at-disrupt/
Kevin Hart gets serious about financial inclusion at Disrupt
Tumblr media
Hollywood powerhouse, comedian and entrepreneur Kevin Hart makes the world laugh both onstage and on camera. But behind the scenes, he’s a serious entrepreneur building a multiplatform media empire. He is also the founder and managing partner of HartBeat Ventures, an early-stage VC firm with a focus on lifestyle, media and technology.
What’s more, Hart’s investment company seems to accomplish this while maintaining a focus on inclusion — financial inclusion specifically. These are just some of the reasons why we’re thrilled that Kevin Hart; his venture firm’s president and co-founder, Robert Roman; and Michael Elanjian, J.P. Morgan’s head of digital investment banking and digital private markets, will join us onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt on October 18–20 in San Francisco.
Venture funding inequity remains a big issue. Forbes reports that while companies with white founders receive 77% of VC dollars, less than 10% go to women founders and less than 1% to Black founders. Ensuring financial inclusion is complicated. It requires a multifaceted approach to fight against homogeneous networks, deceptive warm intros and the basic need for more fluency across different demographics. Hart and Roman will discuss these complexities, and Elanjian will give us a look at how institutions are breaking down barriers.
In addition, we’re curious about Hart’s brand and how it’s expanded over the years. We’d also like to hear where, with all its different business, he plans to take his company moving forward.
Just part of Kevin Hart’s impressive Hollywood CV includes eleven No. 1 box office films that have grossed more than $4.23 billion in global revenue. A successful entrepreneur and chairman of HartBeat, a global, multiplatform media company creating entertainment at the intersection of comedy and culture, Hart’s on a mission to keep the world laughing together.
As the founder of HartBeat Ventures, Hart has partnered with or invested in various companies, including Gran Coramino tequila; plant-based, quick-serve restaurant Hart House; Fabletics Men; JPMorgan Chase; Hydrow; Nutrabolt; Sam’s Club; Old Spice, Brüush; Tommy John; and Therabody.
Hart continues to develop, star in and produce feature films, television shows and podcasts via HartBeat for his various partners, such as Netflix, Peacock, Sirius XM and Audible. He is currently touring nationally with his eighth hour of stand-up material entitled “The Reality Check Tour.”
Over the years, Robert Roman, president and co-founder of HartBeat Ventures, has invested in notable companies such as Airbnb, Hydrow and Beyond Meat. A leading financial advisor in the entertainment and sports industries, Roman focuses his holistic service model on creating and maintaining efficiencies within his clients’ finances.
Roman has more than 20 years of experience in wealth management, providing financial services to families through multigenerational, forward-thinking solutions. In 2011 he founded Legacy Private Client Group, where he built a platform that facilitated holistic solutions. Legacy PCG quickly became one of the fastest growing wealth management firms in California and the U.S.
Michael Elanjian builds new digital businesses and capabilities for JPMorgan’s clients. He is also the founder of Capital Connect, a platform that provides fundraising, networking and data to founders and investors. Acquired by JPMorgan in 2022, Global Shares, which offers cap table and share plan services, is also part of Elanjian’s organization.
Elanjian previously served as the head of digital innovation for the corporate and investment bank where he drove the digital strategy, fintech investments and acquisitions, and he created JPMorgan’s product incubation effort, AreaX.
Before joining JPMorgan, Elanjian spent nine years at Goldman Sachs, where his team led the strategy development and implementation for market structure and financial technology investments.

Big Libs in bed with big oil GASP!
Big Libs in bed with big oil GASP! It’s a good thing they solved the climate issue in Dubi or this might look SUPER hypocritical. The author suggests these families got intertwined prior to their “peaks of wealth and power”, they bonded over “old bones”, Science and wine AND the Getty’s only had a few billion at the time.
This is a very recent article did anyone else hear this on main stream media? It’s fascinating how privileged all of these Dems are.
Direct Quotes:
The Gettys, too, are on that list. Founded by oil baron J. Paul Getty who moved under the radar until his "outing" as the richest American by Fortune magazine in 1957, the subsequent four generations of his family have been in the spotlight navigating fields from environmentalism to fashion to business, music, digital archives, arts, LGBTQ rights and politics. With five wives, the patriarch of the dynasty, J. Paul Getty, fathered four sons who lived to adulthood, and the family tree has flowered to some 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
In the wake of the sale of the company in 1985 to Texaco for $10.1 billion—at that time the biggest corporate acquisition in history—$3 billion was partitioned into four separate trusts. Currently, the family's combined net worth could be in the neighborhood of $20 billion, which will finally be divided among all the heirs upon the death of J. Paul Getty's last living son—Gordon, currently 88.
As the family has navigated personal and professional successes and failures, it has also become inextricably enmeshed into the California political fabric, with longtime close family friendships developing between the Gettys and current Governor Gavin Newsom, Vice President Kamala Harris and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, as well as their families. William A. Newsom II, Gavin's grandfather, was a surrogate father to Getty sons John Paul Jr. and Gordon. William "Bill" Newsom III, Gavin's father, was even the bearer of the ransom money when John Paul III was kidnapped. Newsoms, Harrises, Pelosis and Gettys are godparents to one another's children and make appearances at important family events.
Left to their own devices, Paul Jr. and Gordon spent a good deal of time at the nearby home of their St. Ignatius prep school classmate, William "Bill" Newsom III, and his five siblings. This lively Irish-Catholic household was presided over by William A. Newsom II, a real estate developer and campaign manager for Edmund G. Brown, governor of California from 1959 to 1967 (whose son Jerry subsequently reclaimed the office in 1974 for the first of his four terms).
Their great affection for him endured. When Paul Jr. died at his mansion in England in 2003, a framed photograph of Newsom II was near his bed. This intimate family friendship between the Gettys and the Newsoms spanned generations, including Gordon's four sons—Peter, Andrew, John and Billy—and Bill's son— Gavin, California's 40th governor.
Since moving with her husband to the Pelosis' hometown of San Francisco in 1969, Baltimore-born Nancy had her hands full taking care of their four children; their fifth child was born in 1970. Though she'd grown up in a political household, the idea of herself taking office was still nearly two decades off.
As they grew up, Billy Getty and Gavin developed an appreciation of good wine from their fathers, both passionate oenophiles and best friends. In the years after these families met and became intertwined, as they rose to the peaks of wealth and power, there have been inevitable accusations of cronyism. But they bonded over old bones. They were all fascinated by the science—
At Billy's 1999 wedding to Vanessa Jarman, held on a ranch in Napa Valley, Judge Newsom officiated, and Gavin served as best man. Among the 165 guests was a new assistant district attorney in town, a 34-year-old up-and-comer named Kamala Harris, Vanessa's new friend. Two years later, Harris threw the shower before the birth of the couple's first son. When their daughter was born, Kamala was asked to be the godmother.
Over the years, Newsom political opponents have tried to weaponize his connections to the Gettys, portraying him as a child of privilege.
In the election cycle of 2020, some airtime was devoted to pondering Kimberly Guilfoyle's path from Gavin to fiancé Donald Trump Jr. "Life's interesting," Newsom said
Amid the pandemic, the Gettys were shaken by back-to-back tragedies. Ann, the matriarch, died of a heart attack, and son John, 52, was found dead in a San Antonio hotel room. According to the medical examiner's report, he died of "cardiomyopathy and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], complicated by fentanyl toxicity."

Slack CEO Discusses Distinctiveness Amidst the AI Wave
As AI becomes the dominant force, particularly in the field of corporate communication platforms, seismic shifts are taking place in the heart of Silicon Valley. The outstanding model is Slack, which has seen a huge upgrade since its securing by Salesforce, a conspicuous San Francisco-based corporate programming organization, for a faltering $27.7 billion.
Stewart Butterfield, the fellow benefactor and previous Chief of Slack, surrendered his position only two years post-procurement. Stepping into his shoes is Lidiane Jones, formerly from Microsoft, and a rapidly ascending executive within Salesforce. Jones’ ascension to the CEO role coincided almost perfectly with the launch of ChatGPT, which spotlighted the limitless potential of AI.
Jones, a Boston-native with Brazilian roots, expressed her awe at the AI evolution. She stated, “In the mere span of nine months, Slack has unveiled more innovative features than the total we had launched in the preceding years.” Her tenure as CEO has thus been marked by fast-paced developments, largely influenced by the capabilities of AI.
The corporate chat landscape is heating up with Microsoft as Slack’s chief rival. Platforms like Slack and Microsoft’s Teams were primarily conceptualized to enhance teamwork and streamline internal communication. However, recent iterations, supercharged by AI, envision these platforms morphing into virtual assistants, further aiding productivity.
Relaying her personal experience, Jones spoke about her post-vacation email backlog. Using “Slack AI“, she was able to get a concise summary, making her catch-up process exponentially faster. “Instead of wading through emails for a day or even an entire week, ‘Slack AI’ brought me up to speed in a mere two hours,” she recounted.
Tumblr media
Jones firmly believes in AI’s transformative power to distill information efficiently and even handle complex administrative tasks. She highlighted how Slack provides users direct access to generative AI chatbots from diverse vendors, including the upcoming ChatGPT from OpenAI and Claude from the startup, Anthropic. Emphasizing Slack’s adaptability, Jones remarked, “Our strength lies in our openness. We’re fundamentally an open platform.“
This adaptability can be contrasted with Microsoft’s Teams. While Teams enjoys a robust user base (2019 data points to 12 million daily active users and approximately 300 million monthly users), Slack has always contended with its inclusion in Microsoft’s successful Office Suite. This contention led Slack to lodge a complaint with the European Union in 2020. Although Microsoft has made concessions to Slack in Europe, the investigation remains active, hinting at possible further actions by the European authorities.
Interestingly, Microsoft’s foray into generative AI has been bolstered by its significant investments in OpenAI. However, Jones is bullish on Slack’s AI prospects, attributing this confidence to the quality and richness of data Slack accumulates. “Slack houses a company’s collective knowledge. With employees from various departments interacting, the platform holds a goldmine of unstructured data,” Jones elaborated. This wealth of contextually-rich data is what, according to Jones, empowers their AI strategies.
While Slack doesn’t presently aim to develop its distinct language model akin to OpenAI’s famous generative AI systems, Jones hinted at the potential creation of niche models in the future. She humorously remarked, “We don’t see the need to reinvent the wheel.“
Considering the future trajectory, Jones envisions Slack possibly crafting custom AI assistants with an intricate understanding of users’ preferences and nuances. This AI-augmented future, she believes, would be a monumental boon, especially for professionals juggling work and personal responsibilities. However, Jones also acknowledges the challenges. Earning the trust of users to such an advanced degree “is going to take time,” she concluded.

California Governor - $159 Million - Preserve 638 Affordable Homes
Tumblr media
California Governor Newsom Announces $159.9 Million to Preserve 638 Affordable Homes. SACRAMENTO, CA (STL.News) In an ongoing effort to preserve affordable homes for lower-income Californians priced out of the market, California Governor Gavin Newsom Friday announced more than $159.9 million in awards to keep an additional 638 homes affordable for up to 55 more years.  Since 2022, $315.3 million has been awarded to preserve 1,364 affordable homes, assuring housing for nearly 27,000 people over the life of the developments’ affordability agreements.  These investments guarantee that rents in these thousands of homes remain affordable to low-income Californians for up to 55 more years rather than permanently transforming into market-rate units. What Governor Newsom said: “As California faces a critical housing shortage, it is vital that we use every tool in our toolbox to build more housing faster and preserve affordability for individuals and families struggling with the high cost of rent.  Every Californian deserves a place to call home, and we are aggressively working to secure more affordable housing throughout the state.” ABOUT THE FUNDING: Today’s awards are part of the state’s Portfolio Reinvestment Program (PRP), managed by the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD).  The program looks to extend affordability agreements by extending loan maturity dates, providing new low-interest long-term loans for the rehabilitation of housing, and providing forgivable loans to support short-term operating subsidies. “As we work to expand the construction of new housing, it is critical that we also preserve, invest in and maintain existing affordable housing in communities—it prevents displacement, is cost efficient and improves neighborhoods,” said Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency Secretary Lourdes Castro Ramírez.  “These awards announced today by Governor Newsom will allow affordable housing community developers to improve the quality of living and extend the life of these buildings for many more years by making critical repairs such as fire and life safety improvements to common areas and new roof installations.” BIGGER PICTURE: Preserving existing affordable homes is part of the multi-pronged strategy laid out in the California’ Statewide Housing Plan, which calls for 2.5 million new homes by 2030, with at least one million of those homes being affordable to Californians at lower income levels. “Keeping safe, quality, affordable homes from reverting to market rate is a key component of any strategy to address the crisis of homelessness our state is facing,” said HCD Director Gustavo Velasquez.  “These strategic reinvestments – that ensure HCD-funded properties remain livable and affordable for the foreseeable future – will offer tens of thousands of Californians the housing stability and supportive services they need to be successful in a life lived off the street.” The awards announced today include: - Mission Housing Development Corporation received $12,950,076 to preserve 49 units at Dunleavy Plaza in the County of San Francisco. - Abode Communities received $26,248,920 to preserve 144 units at Centennial Place in the County of Los Angeles. - Eden Housing, Inc., received $12,075,450 to preserve 45 units at Sparks Way Commons in the County of Alameda.  They also received $5,719,492 to preserve 21 units at Hope Villa Esperanza, which was built in 1999 in the County of Santa Clara.  A third award of $19,421,950 will preserve 76 units at the Vista Verde Apartments in Santa Cruz County. - 5169 Hollywood Boulevard received $11,217,661 to preserve 44 units at Kingswood Apartments in the County of Los Angeles. - Golden Empire Affordable Housing, Inc. received $2,996,989 to preserve 16 units at Park Real Apartments in Kern County. - Community Support Network received $396,103 to preserve 6 units at DeTurk, a group home in Sonoma County. - Lutheran Social Services of Northern California received a total award amount of $4,520,577 to aid in the rehabilitation of three projects to preserve 24 units, all located in the County of San Joaquin. - Chinatown Community Development Center, Inc. received $9,821,259 to preserve 82 units at Clayton Hotel and $9,976,420 to preserve 41 units at St. Claire Residence, both in the City of San Francisco. - The John Stewart Company received $44,621,770 to preserve 90 units at The Sequoia in the City of Sacramento. Additional funding is still being offered, with a notice of availability set to be released in the early fall of this year.  For more information, please visit the Portfolio Reinvestment Program (PRP) California Department of Housing and Community Development. What Are the Benefits of Philanthropy?
Getting involved with philanthropy can benefit you in several ways. It can improve your mental health, it can increase your social life, and can even improve your financial situation. It's important to understand how philanthropy works, so you can decide if it's right for you. Philanthropy is defined as a person's love for humanity. It's the act of providing money and time for the benefit of others. For ancient Greeks, it was an important component of a free society and played a vital role in helping foster civilization.
The word "philanthropy" is derived from the Greek "Philo" (meaning love) and "thos" (people). The Greeks considered philanthropy a crucial element of democracy. Throughout history, people have given generously. From the ancient Greeks to the modern day, philanthropy has been a means of providing humanitarian aid. As a result, it has always been an issue of moral concern.
In the Roman Empire, philanthropy was governed by laws that exalted those who donated. Those who gave were allowed to build endowments and trusts. Eventually, this practice evolved into a system of tax-exempt charities. In the Age of Discovery, a global exchange of ideas and people prompted a new wave of giving. During this time, societies raised funds to establish public education.
Research has shown that giving helps alleviate stress, lower blood pressure, and improve overall physical health. Being good for others may also lead to greater life satisfaction. The oxytocin in a person's body during an act of kindness is a neurochemical that promotes peace, tranquility, and inner harmony. Philanthropic support for social justice initiatives can address housing, employment, and education disparities. These efforts can increase access to mental healthcare, promote economic opportunities, and advance civic engagement.
Mental health needs are diverse. There is a lot of research on depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide. However, the most significant impacts are on African-Americans, especially in the rural U.S. A growing number of foundations are dedicating resources to address racial inequities in access to mental health care.
One of the biggest trends is the rise of social enterprise. This philanthropy includes various activities, including volunteer work, stipends, and grants. It is a way of providing help to people who are struggling. Another is social capital, which can be used to build economic and human capital. Some companies, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, are partnering with universities such as Stanford and the University of California San Francisco to improve the quality of life in communities worldwide.
In a study of 36 developed nations, Johns Hopkins University found that American charitable giving dwarfs the spending of most European countries. It is more than seven times that of Italy and France. In some economies, the value of all philanthropic activity could reach 10% of GDP.
Several social benefits can be achieved through corporate philanthropy. These include a higher quality of life, sustainable development of natural resources, and improved physical infrastructure. By focusing on these areas, companies can improve their competitive context. This can enhance the long-term prospects of their businesses. One of the most important benefits of corporate philanthropy is the positive publicity it generates. This can attract new customers and boost the company's public image. In addition, it can also increase productivity. Employees are motivated when they know that their contributions support a cause.
For example, Exxon Mobil is dedicated to improving basic conditions in developing countries. It is also active in the fight against corruption. Through its support of Transparency International, the company has helped to expose corruption in the global community. Another advantage is that it allows companies to leverage the existing nonprofit infrastructure. For example, Cisco Systems has invested in the Cisco Networking Academy, a program that provides training to computer administrators. This program has increased the sophistication of users.

Saturday Morning Coffee
The week has come to an end. Grandma, the final of the grandparents, was laid to rest Wednesday, December 7. She had a very full 96 years. We miss you already, Grandma.
Now we head home. Bug — our daughter Taylor — and I are at Fresno-Yosemite International waiting for our plane to San Francisco. Sipping my quad-grande-vanilla-mocha and typing away on my iPhone. Coffee is good. ☕️

Swift.org
When Swift began life as an open source project, we wanted to open not just the language itself, but the ecosystem around it. Foundation has been instrumental in the success of decades of software and has been an integral part of the Swift developer experience from the beginning, and we knew it had to be included in the open source offering.
This is really nice to see. Apple does have a history of open source projects.
Swift is an amazing language and I’d love to see it spread to all operating systems. To write shared code for Mac, iOS, Windows, and Android, and have it be a first class citizen would be incredible.
C and C++ are still great choices for that of course and we now have Rust, which becomes more tempting with each article I read about it.

In late November, Amazon began making what are expected to be the largest corporate staff cuts in its 28-year history, axing as many as 10,000 corporate employees, or about 3 percent of the company’s office staff.
It’s sad to see a company have to lay off so many people, especially around the holidays.
Good vibes to all those affected.
Dart Engineering Blog
Over the last four years, we’ve evolved Dart into a fast, portable, and modern language. Our next release, Dart 3, completes the journey to a fully sound null safe language.
Another interesting language getting safer by the day. This could be a really interesting cross platform choice for model, network, and data persistence code if it doesn’t rely on an interpreter. Even if it does it makes me go hmmmm. 🤔
Also, Dart Engineering folks, use Blogger instead of Medium. It is a Google property after all.

Predictably, many Rust advocates (of which I am one) pointed out that this is exactly the kind of vulnerability that can be statically prevented by Rust, and is a clear example of where “Rewrite it in Rust” can have real benefits.
Speaking of Rust. We’re seeing a movement to Rust as a low level language. Even Microsoft is going to move to it for low level stuff. It would be really great to see it treated as a first class language by Apple and Microsoft in their respective IDE’s.

The Pentagon has given a tacit endorsement of Ukraine’s long-range attacks on targets inside Russia after President Putin’s multiple missile strikes against Kyiv’s critical infrastructure.
I like the idea of tactical strikes into Russian territory. After almost a year of defending themselves it’s nice to see Ukraine go on the offensive.
Putin has succeeded in making sure Ukraine becomes part of the United Nations. Nice job dude. 🤪
Seth Abramson
I have never had my social media account at any social media platform suspended. But it just happened at Mastodon, a place I have posted so few times that I can literally count them on a single hand.
I’d love to hear the other side of this story. Since Mastodon instances are not beholden to any one corporation they can make their own rules. It could’ve been as simple as the instance admin not liking Mr. Abramson’s work.
He could’ve found a different instance to participate in. It’s really easy to move and I know of at least two instances dedicated to journalism.
It would be nice to see Post federate with other services, Mastodon being the primary one. Post could still maintain their own unique identity and allow others to at least see headlines to paid articles. Just spitballing.

Nice work, Jack. Your buddy Elon has turned Twitter into 8Chan.
Elon is ruining Twitter.
Also, I’d love to see Mastodon support embedding cards in websites. Maybe it does and I don’t know how. That would be amazing.

[ad_1] At South by Southwest this week, builders got here to Austin to speak about how they assume innovation can remedy the housing disaster. Juno, a San Francisco-based developer, has equally formidable targets, however it didn’t simply speak about them. The corporate confirmed off its answer at its first accomplished improvement, a brand new rental mission in East Austin.  Juno is a rust-colored, mass-timber mid-rise at 400 Comal Road, a gentrifying nook shared with tech firms, a espresso roaster and a light-weight rail station. Juno’s edge is digital: the corporate makes use of customized software program to interrupt a improvement down into 33 “parts,” pre-cut items that collectively make up a constructing, not in contrast to a set of gigantic Legos. The strategy has roots in modular development startups of the previous, however clears lots of the roadblocks that challenged these firms from scaling up. “It has extra legs as an strategy,” BJ Siegel, the corporate’s co-founder and head of design stated. For one, fairly than transport whole pre-built rooms, Juno is coping with elements. Architects can mix these items in additional distinctive configurations, giving every mission much less of a cookie-cutter really feel. It additionally provides the corporate extra outs if multifamily improvement markets proceed to battle. The part strategy can work simply as effectively for retail and hospitality, and the corporate has explored promoting its strategy as a product, not simply creating its personal buildings.  Siegel, who used to guide Apple’s retail design staff, introduced over a few of that firm’s design language to the brand new flats.  The interiors rely closely on wooden, pure mild and gentle colours. The residence stands on lots that’s simply one-third of an acre, and the unit footprints are pretty small. A studio is about 460 sq. toes and a one-bedroom is 685 sq. toes, however the structure maximizes area, and doesn’t really feel fairly so crammed inside. Utilities and different electrical parts run alongside the perimeters of the ceilings, maximizing free area on the partitions.   That additionally means the mission did away with the sorts of facilities equally priced leases usually embody in Austin. There’s no pool, and every ground shares a washer and a dryer. Nonetheless, the mission is about midway leased in a troublesome setting for Austin landlords.  The East Austin improvement is a prototype of types. Juno constructed a take a look at residence in a San Francisco warehouse, however it was nonetheless studying because it constructed 400 Comal Road. The corporate collected reams of information on every thing from part weights to crane utilization, and used that to replace the development course of because it went alongside. In the long run, virtually each ground took much less time to construct than the one earlier than it.  The mass-timber panels that type the skeleton of the constructing have been lasered off web site, so Juno stacked them flat on a truck and shipped them in an association that made unpacking the truck and developing with these items as straightforward as attainable. In consequence, a five-person crew constructed the bones of the mission in simply 5 weeks. The curtain wall, an auburn facade manufactured from panelized Corten metal, took one other 16 days to connect. Juno just isn't a colossal constructing, however the firm has plans to go as much as 16 tales and increase the method to different cities, like Seattle and Denver.  Development has been notoriously immune to technological disruption. Katerra, a SoftBank-backed startup that achieved unicorn standing by promising to streamline the event provide chain and use prefab development, went bankrupt in 2021. There isn't a scarcity of challenges dealing with residential and multifamily builders. Land and development prices are up, lenders have tightened their necessities, and hire development has slowed. Forms has made some cities primarily unbuildable, and foreclosures threats look like mounting.
These are the sorts of large challenges that expertise firms have lengthy tried to unravel by discovering new approaches to outdated issues. The roadblocks are clear; what stays to be seen is whether or not tech can hack housing, too. Learn extra [ad_2] Supply hyperlink
