The Festival of San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, begins in Little Italy on the second Thursday of September and lasts a week. The main event is eating, as these folks were doing in September, 1958.

Il Cinema Ritrovato: a week in 1922
Il Cinema Ritrovato: a week in 1922
Three little words of Italian you need to learn if you attend Il Cinema Ritrovato: Cento Anni Fa. This must-see strand of the festival, curated by Bologna’s silent cinema supremos Mariann Lewinsky and Karl Wratschko, dials back the programming clock by a century. The name means simply: a hundred years ago. So it was that this week, in between blasts of restorative Italian sunshine and shots of…

what do you think was going through johnny boy's head during that roof scene, like why do you think he was up there?
oh god, i am so sorry this took so long to answer.
so there's a few things at play there, i think. first of all–i think the rooftops are, for him, an escape. he complains about hating the san gennaro festival because the streets are crowded and it makes it hard to move around, he talks about being "boxed in" when he runs from that card game, and we see him take the rooftops to get to the apartment toward the end of the film. so i think he goes up there as a kind of escape–it's the closest thing he has to physically getting away from little italy and new york city more broadly. he claims he wants to "wake up the neighborhood" and that he's gonna shoot out the lights on the empire state buildings; he's physically striking back at the environment he feels trapped in. (you could also maybe read the shooting the empire state building as raging against god; he's aiming for the highest point he can find.)
i think the fact he's shooting off a gun and throwing homemade bombs around is also, metaphorically and literally, about the release of pressure. the whole film it feels to me like he's deliberately trying to push the tension with michael (and, hell, with anyone else) to its climax; he wants things to boil over and explode. our introduction to him is him blowing up a mailbox. in the script, charlie calls him "flash" (like jumpin' jack, perhaps, given the use of the rolling stones song) and in the film someone (i think michael) uses that nickname at one point. he's definitely associated with explosions, destruction, the build up and release of pressure (which charlie continually tries to delay).
and then, what i think is the most important aspect, which i will put under a readmore with a suicide tw.
johnny boy really strikes me as suicidal. i think on its own there's a subtext there with him being on a high rooftop (the line "he's been up on the roof for half an hour" especially) with a loaded gun (recall that the gun he pulls on michael is unloaded), but this combined with the fact that he's so incredibly self-destructive and seems to sabotage all charlie's attempts to help, which only prolong the situation–johnny boy just wants it over one way or the other. i don't remember exactly where it is in the film, but the bit about oscar's business partner who committed suicide is fairly close to this scene if my memories serves me, and giovanni explicitly compares that character to johnny boy. he seems to have this attitude of "why bother making an effort, i may as well just live it up now because i'll be dead soon anyway." he can't take responsibility because he sees no future for himself and no chance of getting out of his situation. at the very least, even if he doesn't intend to take his own life, he seems like he's just waiting around to die. but, also, only charlie is able to get him down off the roof, and i suspect there may be a subconscious desire there to see if anyone (charlie) will actually be concerned for him. to use perhaps a bit of a hackneyed term, it reads as a cry for help.

Patron Saints and celebrations
Italians have different ways to celebrate Patron Saints' days, according on the area they live in. All in all, the day in which a city celebrates its Patron Saint, is considered as a festive day: it means schools are closed and some offices/shops may be closed as well (some others may be open only in the morning). The celebration consists of a religious cerimony, usually introduced by a parade through the main roads of the city, where you can also encounter a bunch of various food/toys stands to entertain the population (especially kids). The cerimony has specific thankful rituals for the Saint (for example in my hometown the bishop adds to the Patron Saints Church's main chandelier a bunch of roses, cause our Patron Saint's main miracle involved him having roses suddenly grow in his garden under winter's snow).
I think is more common to see dances, shows (music/theater) and fireworks or other celebrations for Patron Saints days in more touristic places (and especially when these happen in warmer months) or in the Central/Southern area of Italy. Ofc, it doesn't have to be: on Sant'Ambrogio's day, Patron Saint of Milano, the Teatro La Scala holds its first plays of the year. But for example, I read the celebration for San Gennaro last 2 days and for sure involve the population much more than what happens in my hometown's, not to mention the very famous "blood miracle" (the Saint's blood is held in two cruets and if it turns "liquid" it means good luck for the city, while if doesn't liquefy, it's a sign of not so good luck) that the Saint repeats three times every year (one of which on his day - I mean, the bishop and the population wait for the miracle 3 times each year, but it's not sure that it liquefies). In cities that have the luck to be near the sea, there may be a parade on the sea (for example in Taranto), but in the end, every city celebrates its Saint their way, with as many activities as possible (it may involve special free openings of museums as well or other similar events).

Spent yesterday in NYC. World Trade Center Memorial, San Gennaro Festival in Little Italy and Times Square. Not my favorite place in the world but I loved the company. Thanks @beka-dreamer and @because-imma-lady-assface for a great day.

WIP Tag Game
Tagged by @mauvecardigans, thank you, babe!
Post your WIP file names (no matter how nondescript or off the wall), let people ask about them, and reply with a snippet or description or other related blabbering!
Once upon a time, i had an organized list with titles and summaries, but my gremlin brain doesn't do well with organization, so. I'm just gonna list these as I have them written. Feel free to ask me about them!
Hold The Line (TKK, 90s Lawrusso) . Johnny gets a job as a phone sex operator after high school to make extra cash, since he's no longer living at home and is pretty much cut off from Sid's money. Daniel decides to call in during a particularly lonely time in his life. Chaos (and lots of sex?) ensues.
Too Drunk to Karaoke (CK, Lawrusso). I've been working on this one foreverrrrr, but can't seem to finish it. This was inspired by a convo I had with @grumpybluefairy, about Johnny and Daniel going to a bar to sing karaoke.
Who the Hell Do You Think You Are? (CK, Lawrusso)
Untitled Prompt Request for @grumpybluefairy. A filthy, dirty, smutty fic. She requested a few prompts and phrases. It's CK, Lawrusso (natch), and the prompts she requested are: "Open wide," "you look so pretty like this", and the following words: messy, choke, mouthwash, wet, and slick. A ficlet where Daniel takes Johnny to the San Gennaro Festival in New York. I've gotten about a quarter of it written. This was initially written for the allvalley100 challenge, but it quickly surpassed 100 words, so I figured I'd turn it into a ficlet.
"Hungry Like The Wolf"- a dark Silverusso fic.
Heads Will Roll (CK vampire fic, hunter!Daniel and vampire!Johnny. Might do this one for CK Halloween)
Vanilla, a Lawrusso fic.
And I am also working on my original fiction, on my writing blog.
Lost Girls With A Bloody Smile Hockey Bros
I'm tagging @camptriplepine @ceruleangold @youandthemountains @pohjanneito and @macchiatosdumptruck! (no pressure to do this, though) And anyone else who wants to do this!

thinking about the san gennaro festival playing a role in both mean streets and the godfather part 2 and wondering if empire bay would have the same or similar (probably so since new bordeaux has mardi gras)...tbh i don't have anywhere else to go with that other than that it's interesting to think about. also mean streets includes one of the characters complaining about how he hates the festival because of the crowds and i feel like at least one of the guys would share that sentiment (luca probably lol), and also i like the image of henry weaving through this big crowd of celebrating people. or maybe young joe and vito running through the busy streets, catching glimpses of the neighborhood wiseguys.
