Autumn Movies: Hocus Pocus (1993)
dir. Kenny Ortega
After moving to Salem, Mass., teenager Max Dennison (Omri Katz) explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani (Thora Birch) and their new friend, Allison (Vinessa Shaw). After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy) who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches' book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal.

Just saw Hocus Pocus 2.  As a huge fan of the original, I like what they did with this new movie.  Of course it wasn’t as good as the first (sequels rarely are) but I felt it added some much needed depth to the Hocus Pocus world while still remainaing light and funny.
I liked the backstory of the young sanderson sisters.  I know some people view this as trying to sympathize or girlboss the evil children eating witches (which is a fair interpretation) I felt it was more for explaining how they got to that point.
It shows a young Winnie being strong and independent and, lets face it, hella rude during a time in history when women weren’t allowed to be these things.  It shows why she was so drawn to the idea of having power of her own.  And it showed the village trying to take her sisters away, another reason she might turn to evil power- she doesn’t want to be without Sarah and Mary.
And I think it was good to show these things.  A poorly conceived of villian is a villian who is evil for the sake of being evil.  The sanderson sisters hurt and killed people because to them it felt good and made them powerful.  Winnie even says causing havoc with her sisters was fun and what they liked to do together.
In the end the movie didn’t try and redeem the sisters.  If Sarah and Mary hadn’t been sacrificed (unknowingly) by the spell you bet your ass the three of them would be off sucking the life out of all the children of Salem.
Winnie didn’t stop being evil.  She just wanted to be with her sisters no matter what, even if it meant giving up her powers.  Because in the end she loved them more than anything.
This is all wonderfully juxtaposed by introducing Becca as a good witch (showing women with power don’t have to be evil and it was 100% a choice for the sanderson sisters) and having her own little coven with her friends who decided to help people, even Winnie.
So while you are supposed to understand and maybe sympathize a little with the Sanderson sisters you are in no way led to believe they are good people.

I gotta tell ya, the Discworld coven of witches would kick the asses of the witches from Hocus Pocus. The Sanderson Sisters got nothing on Esme Weatherwax ALONE, much less her backed up by Ogg and Magrat.
