By extreme luck, I was able to visit the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum in Sanibel, Florida.  A month or two before I planned to go to Florida to research my book about dead animals, I had asked the seashell museum if they’d want to recommend someone to be interviewed. I got no response and wondered if the question might have been rude since they had been dealing with a tragedy. I bought a plane ticket and packed my bags, and on February 1, just two days before I left, they announced that they were going to temporarily open in a limited capacity. Now, instead of a $25 ticket, it was a $10 suggested donation. I went on February 9, when they had a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
There was blue tape on a beam showing how high the water had reached during the storm, and the hall to the bathroom was plastered with photos of damage and resilience from the island. Pictures of rubble and graffiti saying “Sanibel Strong” and “Keep the Faith.” Some of the walls were incomplete, and the lettering on the side of the building was completely gone–but you could still read the name in the remaining adhesive. The live animal exhibits, showing the soft-bodied animals who make seashells, are gone, as all the animals died in the storm.

If you are sheltering in place in Florida, or know someone who is, please register yourself or them at FloridaDisaster.org/report like I did. Scroll down and click on the 2nd underlined “Shelter in Place Survey”.
If you have family/friends who you cannot get ahold of on Sanibel, Captiva or any area of Lee County due to the cell phone outages, please contact Lee County Emergency Assistance at 239-477-1000 or call Lee County Search and Rescue to add someone to their S&R list at 239-533-0622. You also can contact the Cajun Navy at the request link below if you need to request a rescue at a specific address. They already have rescued 30 people from Sanibel. We lived on Sanibel for 12 years and have family and friends who still live there and in Fort Meyers. Thank God our people survived but my heart is broken looking at the utter devastation and hearing hundreds are feared dead. God bless everyone in Florida! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Our top beaches for your summer road trip
Are you ready for summer road trip season? We know we are - there's nothing quite like hitting the open highway to a new destination. If your fun in the sun involves the beach, we're here to help - check out Toyota of Clermont's list of the top East Coast beaches to hit this year.
Sanibel Island: Sanibel Island is a family-friendly Florida beach that's renowned for its shelling and picturesque beaches. There are nature trails for hiking and biking, picnic areas for lunch, and the famed Lighthouse Beach. Sanibel Island is four hours from Clermont, which means it's a great weekend road trip for your summer getaway.

Destin: Destin is another Florida beach located in the panhandle, and it's FAMOUS for its clear blue water, white sugar sand, and spring break atmosphere. It's a great road trip destination to break out your fishing poles - there are huge amounts of Red Snapper and Grouper offshore - plus warm, calm waters to swim in. Destin is about six hours from Clermont.

Golden Isles: The Golden Isles are a set of barrier islands in Georgia that include St. Simon's Island, Sea Island, Little St. Simon's Island, and Jekyll Island. They're famed for their long stretches of beach scattered with driftwood, as well as picturesque towns full of shopping and dining. The Golden Isles are a four-hour road trip from Clermont.

Outer Banks: Trying to get out of state for your next road trip and get a change of scenery? Head north - about 12 hours, to be exact. This road trip might be best split into halves (and you can stop in Georgia or South Carolina and do some exploring). You're headed to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. There are 200+ miles of beach to comb, plus tons of swimming, fishing, surging, skimboarding, and boating opportunities.

Behold the blessings of Poseidon 💙
This is all from ONE shelling venture! I’ve never found this many amazing shells at once. After a storm is the best time to go shelling — I should really be thanking Zeus and Poseidon. Also, one of the most stunning skies I’ve ever seen! Orange-lit clouds on one end, rainbow descending into the sea on the other.

If you walk on certain beaches in Florida for one hour, you will pass approximately 6 bajillion seashells, which is incidentally the number of dollars it costs to stay in Sanibel for a week in February
