"You wanna bust your other leg too?" is such a fucking shitty thing to say, Jack! This is Crutchie's life. His livlihood. He understands the stakes better than anyone.
I only have one good eye (sort of good? let's just say one eye i can use to do my job that gets me paid) and YES I've been like this my whole life and YES I'm still very sensitive about it. It is not fodder for friendly jokes. If a person I loved and trusted said something like this to me, I would lose it.

When I first heard this all I could imagine was Jack being like “I’m not like other girls 🥰🥰”

OK NEW THEORY
santa fe (prologue) is literally a prologue.
jack and crutchie’s relationship seems slightly different, like they don’t really know each other that well. they’re both just getting used to the idea of having someone there for them. why would jack just be telling crutchie his fondest hopes and dreams if they’ve been best friends and brothers for years?
it’s because this was a few years earlier.
also, the lighting in the background changes. at first, there’s a dark sky like it’s very early morning. then, jack starts talking about his dreams and the sun starts to rise. after the song ends is when it changes to the present. the sky goes back to dark, and race wakes up the other newsies instead of jack.

if it were up to me newsies would open with jack and crutchie soulfully staring into each others eyes and singing about running away together to a place thats known to have a lot of queer people at the time.
...oh wait.

Santa Fe (Prologue) could genuinely be a lullaby, it's short and sweet and I would use it to get a baby to sleep.

If you would have told me a week ago that I'd get to hear Jeremy Jordan sing Santa Fe live, I would have never believed you. Wow, what a night!

Santa Fe prologue on YouTube where Jack is so fucking bummed when he delivers the line "you'll be down there soon enough," but genuinely laughs when Crutchie asks him if he has folks. Where Crutchie quietly starts to cry a little after "watch me run" and Jack notices and hands him his jacket to wipe his face on and then pets his arm to comfort him.
Here.

Y'know, it's been a while since I last listened to the entire Newsies album straight through.
This is called self care and I should do it more often.
