Carel Fabritius wordt beschouwd als een van de meest getalenteerde leerlingen van Rembrandt. Op 12 oktober 1654 kwam hij om het leven toen het Delftse kruitmagazijn ontplofte. Daarbij gingen waarschijnlijk ook de nodige werken van hem verloren. Op dit moment zijn er nog elf schilderijen bekend, waaronder het wereldberoemde Puttertje.

Het werk in de Leiden Collectie toont het verhaal van Hagar. Als Sara geen kinderen kan krijgen bij haar man Abraham, laat Sara haar slavin Hagar met Abraham slapen. Uit hun gemeenschap wordt Ismaël geboren. Als Sara vervolgens zelf op hoge leeftijd nog een zoon baart, laat ze Abraham Hagar en haar zoon wegsturen. Met brood en water trekken ze de woestijn in. Na een tijd is het water op. Hagar laat haar zoon kermend achter onder een struik. Omdat ze haar zoon niet wil zien sterven, gaat ze zelf een stukje verderop zitten en huilt. Fabritius toont ons hoe er op dat moment een engel verschijnt die haar wijst op een waterput (Genesis 21:17).

Het gezicht van de engel doet me onmiddellijk denken aan het zelfportret dat van Fabritius bekend is. De manier waarop de gezichten geschilderd zijn, heeft heel wat overeenkomsten: het smalle gezicht, de lange krullende lokken, de dunne, puntige neus, het smalle mondje. Ik wil niet beweren dat de engel het gezicht van Fabritius heeft, maar de manier waarop het geschilderd is doet wel onmiddellijk aan deze schilder denken. Hagars gezicht steekt mooi af tegen het witte gelaat van de engel, terwijl op de achtergrond een broodzak en waterfles oplichten.

Nog een engel zien we op een werk van Ferdinand Bol. Hier verschijnt hij aan Elia. De profeet is de woestijn in gevlucht nadat hij door Jezebel is bedreigd. Stervend van honger en dorst bidt hij om de dood, wanneer een engel verschijnt die hem met voedsel en water laat aansterken (1 Koningen 19:5). Opvallend aan het schilderij is de tegenstelling tussen de oude, uitgebluste Elia en de jonge, vitale engel. Het schilderij is, als je er voor staat, al bijzonder fraai. Bij de Hermitage heb je vanaf een bepaalde plek op de eerste etage zicht op de  grote zaal op de begane grond. Als ik daar naar beneden kijk, hangt het werk van Bol recht voor me. Vond ik het werk beneden al mooi, het wint op een of andere manier nog aan schoonheid nu ik het van grotere afstand bekijk. De engel licht op en zet als het ware Elia in het licht.

Arent de Gelder is met drie werken vertegenwoordigd op deze tentoonstelling. Het meest opmerkelijke is een relatief klein werk: Christus op de Olijfberg. Jezus heeft zich alleen teruggetrokken in de tuin van Getsemane om zich voor te bereiden op zijn komende lijden. Een engel daalt neer om hem kracht te geven (Lucas 22:43). We zien hoe de engel zijn vleugel troostend om Jezus heen slaat. Rechtsonder liggen de discipelen Petrus, Jacobus en Johannes te slapen. Het werk is in grove, bijna impressionistische, streken geschilderd en heeft een uitgesproken spirituele sfeer.

Sometimes between 2018 or 2019, On This Day listed James Corden next to Jeff Stinco, who is still in the "Famous Birthdays" section for August 22, 1978, and I am supposed to be okay with that? This is not right at all.

Here are the people born on August 22, 1975. Jeff Stinco isn't even listed here, for crying out loud!

Here, they made Jeff's name go up in terms of popularity between him and James Corden. At least they knew something they didn't know about. But they still went ahead and made his year of birth/age incorrect!
