Sarah Millican: Chatterbox (2011), Thoroughly Modern Millican (2012), Home Bird (2014), Outsider (2016), and Control Enthusiast (2018)
Sarah entertains her audiences with amusing tales from her life.
Sarah is a likable comedian because she is friendly and discusses relatable everyday things in a way that feels real and puts the audience at ease. This is helped considerably by her voice which is both amusing to hear and sounds innocent, contrasting the subject matter which is often sex-related or a similarly often tabooed topic.
There are a lot of jokes based on sex and vaginas which probably makes her appeal more to women than men but it’s good to hear about things that typically ‘masculine’ types don’t want to hear about both for education purposes, to broaden one’s humour, and to normalize hearing about women’s health and sexual issues which are discussed less than that of men in the media.
There are some good messages in her shows against fat-shaming and some solid feminist tropes which make positive points as well as being funny. There are some other topics about health and conditions like IBS which may help the audience understand normal issues which are usually not discussed publically. The audience participation can also be effective and there are some good comments made on the shows at times, and the audience consistently look to be enjoying themselves.
The weakest one of these shows is probably the last one because the material felt a little less original than the earlier ones and some jokes were repeated from earlier routines, including some interactions with previous audiences seen in the other shows which is fun for the audience who are seeing her for the first time in that show but not as good for anyone who has already seen the other shows.
Chatterbox: 7/10 -Well above average, but no masterpiece-
Thoroughly Modern Millican: 7/10 -Well above average, but no masterpiece-
Home Bird: 7/10 -Well above average, but no masterpiece-
Outsider: 7/10 -Well above average, but no masterpiece-
Control Enthusiast: 6/10 -Just a cut above average-
-The title for Thoroughly Modern Millican is a reference to the 1967 film Thoroughly Modern Millie.
-In Outsider, at roughly 37 minutes in, Sarah herself can be seen as a sleeping audience member.

What else are you into? (I can't tell if Tumblr sent this.)
Hi, nonny!
You can probably tell from my previous posts and literally my everything, but outside of academia, I really love young adult literature and also fanfiction 😂 I managed to somehow turn my interests directly into a career, so like, I'm winning at life lmao
I also really like video games, especially story-heavy games. My brother has an MFA in game design, and he's always sending me links to new video games and analog games to check out (analog games being like board games, card games, tabletop games, etc.). (I'm super lucky in that regard--I get the best birthday and Christmas gifts.) Other than that, I spend a lot of time binge-watching Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube amongst other streaming services/platforms. I'm also very into baking, creative writing (mainly YA fantasy and sci-fi), and crochet!
If we're specifically talking about fandoms or media that I'm into, there's an overview of some of my faves (that got super out of hand) below the cut (leaving out books because I covered that in a previous post, though I did forget to mention in that post that comics-wise, I also love DC Bombshells)
Movies:
Clue (1985) - my favorite movie of all time and is basically my sense of humor in one ~90-minute package. My friends hate watching it with me because I have seen it at least 50 times (not an exaggeration) and know every line by heart
Star Wars - lowkey fuck the sequel trilogy tho VII had some promise before they ruined it, also I wanted to marry Luke Skywalker as a kid so like take that as you will
The Old Guard - immortal gays who literally can't be killed? Sign me the fuck up
MCU - the early years mainly, but also like Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther were all *chef's kiss*. Also, #TeamIronMan
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse - hell yeah finally getting some Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen content!
Birds of Prey - it's just such a fun time and so refreshing to see an action movie made by women. Also plz put Ivy in the next movie because I need my wlw crime content
Venom - it's a good time, y'all
Moana - one of my favorite undergrad memories is going with my friend to see this like two weeks early at a special advanced screening
Beauty and the Beast - look, I'm a librarian, of course I've wanted to be Belle and have that library since I was a small child
Love, Simon - I cry every time I watch the "you get to exhale now" scene and the scene with his dad apologizing and accepting him. It warms my little queer heart 😭😭😭
TV:
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Young Justice
9-1-1
Julie and the Phantoms
Leverage
Psych
Lucifer
Shadow and Bone
BBC Merlin
Supernatural - not like as a serious thing anymore, but I was in deep years ago
Teen Wolf - see: the comment about Supernatural, but also I stopped watching around season 4 and just read the fanfic because that whole show was a mess
Would I Lie to You?
Musicals:
Newsies
Bandstand
Fun Home
Bonnie & Clyde - fight me, it was good
A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder - I don't think I've ever laughed harder at a show than when I saw the tour
If/Then
Legally Blonde
A Chorus Line
Allegiance
Wicked - I'm a basic bitch, I know, but I've seen the tour twice for my birthday
Phantom of the Opera - specifically Phantom 25. I will accept no other cast unless they finally manage to make the French-language production happen and Sierra Boggess is able to reprise her role
Games:
Gone Home
Dragon Age
Tomb Raider
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - I love most of the series, but Majora's Mask is my all-time fave
Fallout
Assassin's Creed
Overwatch
The Sims 4
Music:
Fall Out Boy
Lindsey Stirling
Aly & AJ
Taylor Swift
Marie-Mai - love me some French pop
Olivia Rodrigo
Paramore
Meet Me @ the Altar
Panic! at the Disco
Web:
Carmilla
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries
Jenny Nicholson
Jessica Kellgren-Fozard
Bernadette Banner
Karolina Żebrowska
Philip DeFranco
Jill Bearup
Kitboga
STRANGE ÆONS
Sarah Z
Lindsay Ellis
Rachel Maksy
Buzzfeed Unsolved - RIP 😭😭😭
Standup:
Dara O'Briain - the funniest man alive. I have literally laughed so hard at some of his jokes that I've legitimately had trouble breathing
John Mulaney
James Acaster
Sarah Millican
Steve Hofstetter
Iliza Shlesinger
Hasan Minhaj
Okay, that's way more information than literally anyone ever wanted to know about me, and also I'll probably remember like 3 million things I forgot to mention as soon as I post this 😂

HOW DID I NOT REALISE QUITE HOW MUCH I LOVE SARAH MILLICAN BEFORE

In March 2020, I watched Taskmaster. I then decided this was a work of genius and I needed to figured out how to see the people in it in as many other things as possible. So I Googled my favourites, and I made a list of panel shows and panel show-like things (anything where they’re doing an “as self” appearance that isn’t just stand-up, ie. The Mash Report) that featured people I got to know and Taskmaster and wanted to see elsewhere.
I then decided that before I start on that list, I should watch some other longer-running panel shows to get to know the field of panel shows as a whole better. I figured I would appreciate the shows on my list more if I had first watched some long-running panel shows so I knew more of the common panel show guests. Those long-running shows were Would I Lie to You, 8 Out of 10 Cats and Catsdown, Mock the Week, and Big Fat Quizzes. I later added QI, and Never Mind the Buzzcocks but only seasons 19-28 for that last one. As I watched those, I discovered new people I liked, looked up other shows those people had done, and added those shows to my list.
At the same time, I decided to re-watch a bunch of British comedy shows I’ve already seen. I grew up watching older British comedy with my dad, so I re-watched some old shows I hadn’t seen since I was young. And I also re-watched some other shows that I had seen more recently, enjoying how I got new things out of them now that I’ve seen all these panel shows and understand a lot more references in British culture.
Also, as I watched those panel shows I learned about new fictional British comedy shows (sit-coms, sketch shows, satire), and I watched those at the same time as the long-running panel shows.
The whole thing got a little out of hand. It does not help that my brain tends to insist if I’m going to watch any of a show I have to watch every single episode. So while this wasn’t supposed to consume my life for over a year, that just sort of happened. The world ended and I had nothing else to do so I just kept working my way through all of this.
Today, I finished the last episode of QI that has aired so far. And that completes all the shows I’ve been planning to watch before I get to that list I made after watching Taskmaster just over a year ago. Below the “keep reading” list, I’m putting the collection of British comedy things I’ve watched (and read, and listened to) since March 2020. And below that is my list of shorter panel shows that feature people I really like, which I decided I could not start watching until I’d finished all these other things. I guess I can start on that now. Not sure what to watch first.
Things I had not watched/read/listened to before, watched/read/listened to since March 2020
Panel shows -8 Out of 10 Cats -8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown -Would I Lie to You? -Taskmaster -Big Fat Quizzes (of the Years/Decades/Everything/Anniversaries) -Mock the Week -Never Mind the Buzzcocks (broke my usually strict rule of watching every episode of a show if I watch any of it, and only watched seasons 19-28) -QI
TV and radio shows - fiction -The IT Crowd -Not Going Out -The Sketch Show -Miranda -London Irish -Derry Girls -The Mighty Boosh (television) -The Mighty Boosh (radio) -Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy -Moone Boy -GameFace -Man Down -Bruiser -Ambassadors -Back -A Bit of Fry and Laurie -The Armando Iannucci Shows -Time Trumpet -Avenue 5 -On the Hour (radio) -The Day Today -Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge (radio) -Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge (television) -I’m Alan Partridge -Mid-Morning Matters with Alan Partridge -This Time with Alan Partridge -Grandma’s House -Nathan Barley -Cunk on Britain -BBC Ghosts -Out of Her Mind
Stand-up -Sarah Millican: Chatterbox (2011) -Sarah Millican: Thoroughly Modern Millican (2012) -Sarah Millican: Home Bird (2014) -Sarah Millican: Outsider (2016) -Sarah Millican: Control Enthusiast (2018) -Frankie Boyle: Live (2008) -Frankie Boyle: If I Could Reach Out Through Your TV and Strangle You, I Would (2010) -Frankie Boyle: The Last Days of Sodom (2012) -Frankie Boyle: Hurt Like You’ve Never Been Loved (2016) -Frankie Boyle: Excited for You to See and Hate This (2019) -Jon Richardson: Funny Magnet (2012) -Jon Richardson: Nidiot (2014) -Jon Richardson: Old Man (2018) -James Acaster: Repertoire (2018) -James Acaster: Cold Lasagne I Hate Myself 1999 (2020) -Simon Amstell: Do Nothing (2010) -Simon Amstell: Numb (2012) -Simon Amstell: Set Free (2019) -Sara Pascoe: Lads, Lads, Lads (2019) -Rose Matafeo: Horndog (2020) -Rhod Gilbert: The Award-Winning Mince Pie (2009) -Rhod Gilbert: The Cat That Looked Like Nicholas Lyndhurst (2010) -Rhod Gilbert: The Man with the Flaming Battenberg Tattoo (2012) -Lee Mack: Live (2007) -Lee Mack: Going Out (2010) -Lee Mack: Hit the Road Mack (2014) -Josh Widdicombe: And Another Thing (2013) -Josh Widdicombe: What Do I Do Now… (2016) -Russell Howard: Live (2008) -Russell Howard: Dingledodies (2009) -Russell Howard: Right Here Right Now (2011) -Russell Howard: Wonderbox (2014) -Russell Howard: Recalibrate (2017) -Daniel Sloss: Dark (2018) -Daniel Sloss: Jigsaw (2018) -Daniel Sloss: X (2019) -Joe Lycett: That’s The Way A-Ha A-Ha, Joe Lycett (2016) -Joe Lycett: I’m About to Lose Control and I Think Joe Lycett (2018) -Susan Calman: Ladylike (2015) -Katherine Ryan: In Trouble (2017) -Katherine Ryan: Glitter Room (2019) -Jo Brand: Barely (2003)
Movies and movie-like pieces of media (a one-off rather than something with multiple episodes), also noting the the reason I watched it because if I watch a movie it’s probably because it involves someone I discovered through television shows -A Little Bit OCD (Jon Richardson) -Magicians (Mitchell and Webb) -Clinton: His Struggle with Dirt (Armando Iannucci) -2004: The Stupid Version (Armando Iannucci) -The Personal History of David Copperfield (Armand Iannucci) -The Trip to Italy (Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan) -The Trip to Spain (Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan) -The Trip to Greece (Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan) -Death to 2020 (Charlie Brooker) -Mindhorn (Julian Barratt) -Carnage (Simon Amstell) -Benjamin (Simon Amstell)
Books on paper made of trees -Backstory – David Mitchell -Mack the Life – Lee Mack -Monty Python Speaks – David Morgan
Audiobooks -Instead of getting a copy of Classic Scrapes, I downloaded this video as an mp3 and listened to it as though it were an audiobook - so that’s kind of like  listening to James Acaster’s Classic Scrapes -Perfect Sound Whatever – James Acaster -Just Ignore Him – Alan Davies
Things I had watched/read/listened to before, re-watched/re-read/re-listened to since March 2020
TV shows - fiction -Peep Show -The/That Mitchell and Webb Situation/Look -The Inbetweeners show -The Thick of It -Monty Python’s Flying Circus -The Complete Beyond the Fringe (not a TV show, it’s a recorded album that taught me recent British history when I was a teenager and I had great fun re-listening to it in 2020) -Fawlty Towers -Ripping Yarns -Yes Minister and Yes, Prime Minister -Blackadder -Mr. Bean -Brass Eye -Twenty Twelve -W1A
Movies and movie-like pieces of media (a one-off rather than something with multiple episodes), also noting the reason I watched it because if I watch a movie it’s probably because it involves someone I discovered through television shows -How to Irritate People (John Cleese) -The Trip (Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon) -In the Loop (Armando Iannucci) -The two Mr. Bean movies (Mr. Bean, obviously) -The two Inbetweeners movies (The Inbetweeners, obviously) -Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa (Alan Partridge, obviously) -The Death of Stalin (Armando Iannucci) -A Fish Called Wanda (John Cleese) -And Now for Something Completely Different (Monty Python) -Monty Python’s Holy Grail (Monty Python) -Life of Brian (Monty Python) -The Meaning of Life (Monty Python) -A surprisingly high-quality bootleg of Spamalot I found (Monty Python) -The History Boys (no one in particular is the reason I got into this one, I didn’t even know who Alan Bennett was when I first stumbled upon this movie years ago, but I loved it and now I re-watch it every once in a while)
Audiobooks (these are actually all books that I’d read before in physical form but listened to their audiobooks for the first time in 2020) -The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams -The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - Douglas Adams -Life, the Universe and Everything - Douglas Adams -So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish - Douglas Adams -Mostly Harmless - Douglas Adams -Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency - Douglas Adams -The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul - Douglas Adams -Last Chance to See - Douglas Adams -The Salmon of Doubt - Douglas Adams
Currently reading (have not read before) -Moab is my Washpot - Stephen Fry
My list of panel shows and panel show-like things that feature people I’ve discovered through all those above shows, that I plan to watch -The Bubble -Was It Something I Said? -Duck Quacks Don’t Echo -Hypothetical -Jon Richardson: Ultimate Worrier -Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back -Frankie Boyle’s New World Order -Roast Battles -Argumental -The Mash Report -Rob Brydon’s Annually Retentive -Insert Name Here -Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled -Ask Rhod Gilbert -Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience -Comedy World Cup -Russell Howard’s Good News -The Russell Howard Hour
One specific thing I have not seen before and would really like to watch but it has so many episodes that I can’t put it on the actual list of shows of which I'm going to watch every episode - I will try to convince my brain to be okay with some compromise where I watch some but not all of it, like I did with Never Mind the Buzzcocks -The Last Leg
