Animal of the Day!
Satanic Leaf-Tailed Gecko (Uroplatus phantasticus)
(Photo from Reptile Direct)
Conservation Status- Unlisted
Habitat- Eastern Madagascar
Size (Weight/Length)- 100 mm
Diet- Small insects; Snails
Cool Facts- Yes, that’s actually its name. The satanic leaf-tailed gecko is named for both its leaf shaped tail and the small horns above its eyes. Originally described in 1888, it was thought to be a mythical creature from its beautiful appearance. Its camouflage perfectly blends in with the thick Madagascan rainforests. The gecko’s feet have adhesive hairs on their toes that maximizes their surface area and allows them to stick to vertical surfaces. If their camo fails, the satanic leaf-tailed gecko opens wide and shows off its vibrant red throat with the hopes of scaring off birds. Due to habitat loss and the illegal pet trade, these geckos are at risk. Luckily, three national parks protect the rainforests that the geckos call home.
Rating- 11/10 (Lizardman, take me by the hand.)

Creature Awaits #232
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
For November we'll be exploring some uniquely camouflaged creatures… : )
(An awesome captures by skilled photographer, Charles J. Sharp (CC BY-SA 4.0 Deed, cropped))
The Phantastic Leaf-Tailed Gecko
A.K.A: The Satanic Leaf-Tailed Gecko, The Eyelash Leaf-Tailed Gecko
Scientific Name: Uroplatus phantasticus
Region: Tropical forests along central eastern Madagascar
Size: Only about 3.5" (~9cm) long, including their leafy tail
Interesting Notes: These remarkable little leafy reptiles are so well camouflaged, that, when remaining still, both predators and prey struggle to see them. Not only do they sport the warm colors and markings of fallen leaves, but even their skin's texture contains leaf-like veining. Interestingly, there is a tendency in males of the species to also have notches in their tails as though decomposing, but most female tails appear more intact.

I don't know a lot about Sonic but I want to know! 29 and 30 for ask game.
Aight, you didn't specify an OC so I'm gonna do a random one!
29. How would you describe their personality?
Menace is, as his name suggests, an absolute menace. He's energetic, eccentric and spooky. He loves all things horror and delights in scaring others, though he can recognise when he's gone too far. He has a nurturing side, as any of his companion chao will let you know. He has a very morbid sense of humour. Also if you threaten his chao, he won't hesitate, bitch. As well as this, a love of making money is definitely a facet of his personality. Opportunities to advertise his haunted house are taken in an instant. He's a good showman, and a good horror actor.
The eccentric high energy spoop-tastic vibes are kind of Lilia vibes if you're a Twisted Wonderland fan.
30. What is their main goal/motive?
So far, Menace's goals and motives are pretty simplistic. Earn money, perform in haunted house with his spooky pets, scare the bejeebus out of people. The haunted house he does is very much just scare actors and scary atmosphere though, just an attraction for kids. What Menace would love is to one day travel to an actual haunted location and meet real ghosts. He knows they're out there, but he's never been able to get to the right places. He would take one look at King Boom Boo and go 'aw yeah new best friend'. Incidentally, Menace doesn't have many friends beyond his chao at the moment. More friends would be nice.

Satanic Leaf Tailed Gecko
Enclosure:
Minimum size for a single adult is 10 x 10 x 20 in. with lots of ventilation and height
Can be housed with other geckos (including males), but house size needs to be increased (like 12 x 16 x 12 in for pairs)
A pair of adults can be housed 12 x 16 x 20 in and if more geckos are present, than increase size more
No water bowls, just mist their enclosure daily with warm water so they can drink the droplets
Substrate needs to be at least 3 inches deep and is best mixed with peat or sphagnum moss with coconut fibers or soil mixes
Spot clean daily and disinfect fully every 2 weeks
70% humidity
Their ambient temperature should be 72-75 degrees F and it can drop to the 60s at night
UVB not needed, but heavily suggested
Day and night cycle needed
Give them plenty of places to hide since they are shy and it makes them feel secure; branches, vines, leaves, upper caves, fake or live plants, etc.
Diet/Feeding habits:
Insectivores that can eat earthworms, dubia roaches, crickets, grasshoppers, snails, slugs, and spiders.
Slugs and snails are essential for breeding the geckos
All meals should have calcium powder and vitamins
Insects should be gut loaded
Food should be no bigger than the gecko’s neck
Age identification:
Average lifespan is 8-10 years
Physical traits:
Max adult size is about 3 inches
Males are smaller than females, but have larger bulges at the base of their tail and their tails resemble dead leaves more
They tail is curvy, has indents and mimics a dead leaf shaped, hence the name
They mostly come in brown or black shades of color, but some morphs can appear red, orange, other shades of brown, yellow, or purple
Their eyes are usually white, gray, or almost red in color
Can drop their tail as a defense mechanism
Climb slowly
They do not have eyelids, so they lick their eyes to keep them moist
They have weak jaws and small teeth, so even if they may try to bite you, they cannot break skin
Personality:
Tame and docile
Very shy
Fragile
Nocturnal
It will press itself to the ground to remove its shadow if threatened
Would rather flee or hide than bite
They will move their tail either because they want to mate or feel threatened
They communicate by barking or humming
Health concerns:
MBD- caused by lack of calcium and proper UVB
Take to a vet if there’s discharge, redness, skin color change, wheezing, and lethargy.
Mouth rot and respiratory infections are caused by improper humidity and dirty environments
Parasites and mites can cause lethargy and lack of appetite. Also a dirty environment causes them to thrive
Stuck shed can result in dead tissues
Dehydration can cause their tail to curl up and lethargy
Handling:
Not too tolerable of handling and very shy
Wash hands before and after handling
Only handle when needed
