Gypsum Care Guide
Composition: CaSO₄ · 2H₂O
Hardness: 2 (scratched by fingernail)
Varieties
Selenite
Satin spar
Alabaster
Ordite
Hydrosensitivity: Reactive. Gypsum is incredibly soft and any exposure to water will damage it.
Photosensitivity: Reactive. Sunlight can dull the crystal and may make it brittle.
Thermosensitivity: Reactive. Selenite in particular may contain water-filled inclusions that can expand and break the crystal if heated.
Reactivity: Unreactive.
Fragility: Fragile. Being a 2 on hardness, it is unsuitable for jewellry or wear. Gypsum will break and scratch easily.
Toxicity: Not toxic.
Recommended care: Treat with care. Keep away from water, sun, and heat.
Conditions are described based on normal use. Sources and definitions below the cut.
Definitions
Composition: Chemical composition
Hardness: Mohs hardness, gauges how tough a crystal is
Varieties: List of varieties a crystal can be.
Hydrosensitivity: Ability to be damaged or altered by exposure to or lack of water. Crystals should never be submerged in water for long regardless of their hydrosensitivity, and salt water can damage crystals no matter what.
Photosensitivity: Ability to be damaged or altered by light, often light with UV rays (sunlight).
Thermosensitivity: Ability to be damaged or altered by heat, often high heat.
Reactivity: Any other notable reactivities.
Fragility: Ease that the crystal breaks or scratches.
Toxicity: Note of anything toxic inherent to the crystal's chemical composition. Not toxic does not mean you should eat it!
Recommended care: The recommended course of action for this crystal.
Other notes: Any other care notes.

Selenite vs. Satin Spar: What's the difference, and does it matter?
Oh, gypsum. You’re fertilizer, walls are made of you, you make tofu tofu, and you’re also some of the most coveted minerals on the crystal market. If you like collecting or working with crystals, you’ve almost definitely seen it. It’s usually marketed as selenite (though it also frequently appears in flowerlike forms called desert roses). There’s only one problem — like olive oil, wasabi, and…

Selenite vs Satin Spar
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They have the same base mineral (gypsum) and they are often both called selenite but only one actually is!
Selenite is a clear crystal that grows in sheets and is pictured on the left. It is often very transparent and I got this piece at a market for $10
Satin spar tends to look white (or peach/orange) and grows in that fibrous texture! It is often mislabeled as selenite and you can see why they are very similar. This stick was gifted to me as part of a bundle :)

‘Let’s see how much you remember.’ Obi-wan pushed his chair back from the table and strode to the centre of the terrace. It was clear of furniture and relatively flat. ‘Perfect,’ he murmured.
Satine grinned and joined him, tying her hair back from her face. ‘Or it could hurt,’ she retorted, stamping one foot on one of the flagstones just hard enough to illustrate it was as hard as it looked.
Obi-wan drew himself up with hurt indignation. ‘I would never let you get hurt.’
Satine’s brow rose, and then she gave him a smile of such endearing sweetness, he knew it spelled trouble for him. ‘I meant you.’
He threw his head back and laughed. ‘Well, then…’ Obi-wan caught Satine’s hand and bowed with courtly formality over it before pressing a lingering kiss to the back. ‘Shall we dance, my dear?’
‘No cheating.’
‘Cheating?’
‘You can’t use the Force against me.’
‘Give me one good reason why.’
‘It isn’t fair.’
‘Life isn’t fair, princess,’ he growled.
Before he could blink, Satine stepped into his body, and her free hand darted forward and cupped over his crotch. ‘That’s duchess to you.’ Her hand tightened a little, warning him that the right angle and amount of pressure could incapacitate him long enough for her to get away. ‘My dear.’
‘You’re very pretty,’ Obi-wan told her, with what he hoped was a winning smile and not a grimace. Satine snorted and released him. It was an opening. And a foolish decision. He swept her ankles from underneath her, catching her with the Force just before she landed hard on her arse. He gave her his hand. ‘Again?’
‘Always.’ She grabbed the proffered hand and let him haul her to her feet.
