my designs for the sillies!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
elaboration on the designs + some hcs under the cut (it’s a long one folks!)
Ocean: she/her, lesbian, aroace-spec; her hair is naturally a Fucking Curly Mess, so she straightens it out, sprays it, and uses a headband and hair-clips; Ocean always has a pencil behind her ear in case she needs to write something down, but she always forgets she put it there; she has a coat on her waist because a long-sleeved shirt and a vest is not enough. she must not feel an ounce of cold.
Noel: he/she/they, bigender, gay; his hair is also a Fucking Curly Mess so he just puts some gel on and prays to satan it works; Noel tries to tone it down like his mother told him so he doesn’t wear pride merch to school or anything, but he does wear black earrings and black nail polish
Mischa: he/him, bisexual; I basically tried to make him look like the type of person my mom would point at in the street and go “that’s what satan does to a person!!”; Mischa constantly looks like he’s been hit by a bus, he says it’s because he gets into fights, but he’s just a fucking wreck; backwards hat, bi pin and star of David pin because I saw @lemon69lol’s post and have decided that Jewish Mischa is canon now; Ukrainian flag phone case!!; Ricky bought him these BRIGHT neon green crocs for his 18th birthday and he wears it every day (Noel wants to shred those fucking crocs);
Ricky/Savannah: any pronouns + neos, genderfluid, bisexual, demiromantic?; I gave them the neon space cat headphones and crutches as always, but I added spikes to the crutches so my guy can kick some ableist ass, and an AAC device because of an art post THAT I CAN’T FIND! if someone has that one drawing of Ricky with an AAC device strapped to his crutch tell me because I want to give credit to the artist but I CAN’T; genderfluid + any pronouns pin; shoes that aren’t matching and a dress over pants because fuck the dress-code
Jane Doe: she/they/it/doll, unlabeled; I have no idea where this design came from but, Jane with X eyes, I guess; I think I was originally basing her off of Spinel but fuck, what do I know?; doll is based on my Emilia Jane Doe
Constance: she/they, demi-girl, sapphic; I tried to make her hair resemble Trinity Constance because I ADORE their Constance!; hoop earrings and braces because I said so; rainbow socks because she’s fuckin’ queer; colorful band-aids for reasons I will not be telling you, sorry

M*A*S*H OC TIME
I love being a silly nerd! Literally just a self-insert
I literally just thought to myself "What if I was in the compound? What if I was a silly little bean along with the rest of them?"
NAME: Marieanne "Mutt" Wolfe
Age: 28
Gender: AFAB, presents otherwise, depending on the day. Pronouns are anything- she'll respond to she/her but secretly loves being referred to as male (ooooh lore)
Height: 5'4
Weight: 200
Physically Characteristics: Caucasian with a dark complexion, her dad was half-Latino. Dark brown shoulder length hair and light brown eyes, closer to amber. She has wide hips and a smaller chest. (Can't wait to get art of them aghhhhh)
She's from Georgia, her accent shows as much- not long and drawn out though, she refers to it as "hick." Was raised in the middle of nowhere- the closest small town was 30 minutes away, so her family mostly made their living off their farm. She's used to having close to nothing, so certain things about the compound- the ass tasting food, the terrible sleeping arrangements- she's used to, and takes in stride. This also causes her to have quite a positive outlook, as she's mostly a very positive person- much to a few others' contempt. Hobbies: Back home, she was quite different from her family- she loved to read and study, especially anatomy, botany and fauna as well. She also enjoys studying different religions and cultures- she always dreamed of travelling the world. She loves to sketch the makeup of different flowers and animals in her journals she keeps- although her family rebuke it as a waste of time. They were taught that work was their only livelihood.
She enjoys studying and music quite a bit- her grandmother immigrated from France- and brought over her taste for classical- especially Satie and Debussy. She distinctly remembers listening to them while her mother baked bread in the kitchen.
Because of her upbringing- she always strived to be better. On trips to Savannah as a child she would watch the high-class ladies walking down the street, and wanted to be like them. At age twelve she made it her meaning in life to graduate high school, make it to college and become something greater.
She achieved that dream; sort of. She graduated high school with a high GPA, much to her fathers' disdain. He threatened her life, and her mother was angry at her for even thinking of leaving the farm to go to a University. She applied- behind her parents' backs... and left them after her father threatened to beat her.
She graduated from Duke University- with a specialty in Neurosurgery, a minor in Religion. She achieved her dream- but lost her family at the same time...
She still carries parts from home with her. She loves nature, loves to bake and still likes to study botany in her free time. Oh, and she carries a stuffed yellow rabbit given to her by her grandmother.
She considers herself to be very religious. Her family raised her Southern Baptist- but she found the tradition there a bit unsettling. After studying several different religions, even dabbling in Paganism, she was drawn back to Catholicism- at first, strictly out of admiration for the aesthetics of it. She considers herself to have Catholic beliefs, although she's not confirmed, and even wears a rosary on her belt. She's still studying and making up her mind about her religion.
FRIENDS AT THE 4077
Radar O' Reilly- Radar is one of her best friends at the 4077- they first bonded on their shared backgrounds of growing up on a farm. As they get to know each other, they even share their love of stuffed animals- as she brought a stuffed rabbit from home. She enjoys helping him with his animals and worm farm too.
Father Mulcahy- He is probably her best friend there. Coming in, she dropped her rosary and Mulcahy retrieved it for her. She goes to his services every Sunday- and they even started a Bible Study together. He helps her a lot in her study of religion and offers to help her with her complicated past and religious trauma. They love analyzing Bible stories and theology, she especially loves quizzing him about the Catholic church and the Saints. They also have Biblical inside jokes they like to confuse other people with.
Margaret Houlihan- They are just complete girls together. Marieanne respects Margaret as if she were another surgeon and they hit it off right away. They enjoy sitting in each others tents, gossiping, and making terrible cocktails out of whatever they can find.
Charles Winchester- These two are definitely frenemies to begin with- He especially made fun of her for her upbringing, and she makes fun of his, name calling and all. She genuinely hates him at first… After some time together though, he becomes pleasantly surprised at her neurological expertise and her love of classical music. He becomes very intruiged by her, and her with him- She always wanted desperately the lifestyle that he gets to live- and he is surprised by her own interest in him, and how some "redneck swill" could EVER be interested in the same things. They become very unlikely friends, drinking tea and listening to Mozart sometimes. And of COURSE giving Hawk and BJ a hard time.
5. L. Rizzo- They get along, both from the deep south. They mostly enjoy making fun of all the "damn yanks" at the compound. He flirts with her offhandedly at first, but once she sets him straight with a swift backhand, they get along. Like siblings, she always makes fun of him for falling asleep and not knowing what the hell he's doing, usually visiting him at the garages to wake him up with a stupid prank.

It has taken days of planning and many sleepless nights, but now you are finally done. The petite art gallery on the west side of Paris is decorated with elegant floral garlands and soft, twinkling fairy lights, all highlighting the theme of the collection: Romance. You’re tired, but it is a satisfied kind of tired, the kind that settles into your muscles and bones like a lioness sinking down onto the soft Savannah earth after a rewarding hunt. The artist behind the collection had been no one, just another street painter trying to sell his offerings to mildly interested tourists when you had noticed him and his work, stopping dead in your tracks to admire a painting of a couple locked in a warm embrace. They lay in a field of green grass and small pink blossoms, wrapped in one another’s arms. They're bathed in soft yellow sunshine, locked together in an eternal summer kiss. Something about the painting had felt so inviting, so real, you had pressed the tips of your fingers against your lips, your heart swelling with a wave of longing to be kissed the same way. By a certain someone.
Theo had agreed with you, once you had managed to drag him away from the mansion and back to the park where the artist was slowly packing up his wares. Buffeted by the man’s potential, you had worked together on putting together a showing of his paintings, drumming up funds from various patrons until you had enough for your showcase.
Now you walk through the small gallery, drinking in the fruits of your labor.
“There you are.” Theo’s deep voice cuts through your reverie and you turn to see him approaching you, glass of sparkling champagne in hand. He hands you one which you take with an appreciative smile.
“Cheers,” you say, lifting it towards him.
“Proost,” he answers, clinking glasses with you. Your gazes hold (you could swim forever in all that blue) Before the moment stretches into something too long to be insignificant, you both raise the delicate crystal flutes and drink. The cascade of bubbles feels like it's not just rushing down your throat but through your entire body. You blink, turning towards the painting you are closest to.
It’s the passionate couple, kissing in the summer field. The one that had so immediately caught your attention. You sigh, a light, dreamy sound that pours itself over Theo like silk, sending an unexpected rush of heat through his body. He rubs his face, turning away to hide any color that may have risen to his chiseled cheeks. You don't notice, eyes glued to the figures as you allow yourself another sip of champagne. Now, in the dimmer lighting of the art gallery late at night, there is something even more sensual about the way the couple is holding each other. His hand pressed against the rounded curve of his lover's hip, her fingers curled against the side of his neck, intimate, possessive.
“This is as satisfying as a real kiss,” you murmur, head tilting as you continue to admire the art. What pulls you out of your rose-colored haze is the decidedly unromantic snort from your right.
“If you think a painting can replace a real kiss, then you haven’t been kissing the right person, hondje.”
He’s smirking as he takes a sip of his drink, his impossibly blue eyes looking over the painting. The fairy lights are having the same effect on him as they do the artwork: he looks unfathomably beautiful, his golden hair darker than in the daylight, his face a sculptor’s dream of perfectly balanced features.
Maybe it’s the champagne. Maybe it’s the intimacy of the late hour. Maybe it’s the fact that you have been spinning from one task to another all day long without a chance to spend any time with him. It has to be something because the following words come out of your mouth:
“Prove me wrong.”
Three little words that stop the earth from turning, that grab hold of Theo’s lungs with such force that the next inhale shakes. Three little words that hang in the air between you, vaguely foreboding like flickering neon or distant thunder.
Warning flashes through your mind and you want to kick yourself and your big mouth. Why did you say that? Whatever possessed you to even think that Theodorus van Gogh would be interested in kissing–
Theodorus van Gogh sets his champagne glass down on the edge of a table full of brochures and then turns. He reaches out with both hands, cupping either side of your face and leans down, capturing your mouth with his. You freeze, both arms at your sides, the champagne in your glass sloshing around like a tiny, storm-tossed sea.
Is he…..
Oh….
…..he is….
He’s kissing you, his lips moving over yours in a shockingly gentle caress, his hands holding you still, not forcefully, but carefully, like you’re something valuable, something he should handle with care. He displays a tenderness you would never have dreamed possible in a man as large as he is. Every movement of his mouth against yours sends a ripple of warmth through your body. One hand shifts, the back of his fingers stroking the softness of your cheek.
Your surprise slowly melts under his touch, disappearing like water droplets in sunshine,  and your free hand rises to clutch his shoulder. You hold on tightly, reveling in the electricity every brush of his lips sparks. But before you can part your lips in invitation, before you can start truly returning his kiss, he pulls away, the movement causing a short, forlorn gasp to leave your tingling lips.
Quiet descends upon you both and for a long, tense moment, neither one of you speaks. Words seem impossible as you stare into the summer-sky of his eyes. He clears his throat, shaking his head as if trying to wake himself out of a dream. At that moment you feel him pulling away, the warmth of his kiss and the tenderness of his hands fading into memory. Your heart lurches in panic.
“Theo.”
He grunts, unable to meet your gaze.
You step towards him, setting your champagne glass down next to his. Your hands are now free to reach out, steadier than you expected them to be, and take his, holding his strong hands tightly in yours.
“I believe…..I am starting to be swayed by your persuasive argument. But I do think I need more proof before I am fully convinced.”
His head snaps up and on his handsome face you see a dazzling array of emotions, starting with surprise and ending with a slow smile that sends your heart spinning. He pulls you towards him, unhurried, a man who now knows he has a delicious treat waiting just for him.
"More proof, huh,” he murmurs, unlocking your hands so he can slide his around you, large palms eagerly learning the curve of your hips, the slope of your waist.
You plunge your hand boldly into the thicket of his golden hair as he bends his body down to kiss you for the second time that night.
By the night’s end though….you will have lost count entirely.

Rose gets accepted into Britechester and has a private tour of the campus with her bestfriends. (Lot details can be found HERE)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A very energic and charismatic Marisa welcomed the girls to a territory that she had known like the back of her hand.
"Welcome to the University of Britechester! If I catch you wandering off during our walkthrough, there will be a STEEP price to pay..."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Here goes the Pub of Britechester. Though Savannah had used their bathroom to change into something more comfortable, you all are not allowed inside.
However, once you become young adults come back! The prices are always reasonable as long as you have your student id!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"This is THEE best restaurant that Britechester has to offer! It's called 'The Orangery' and was built by the talented architect GordanJohnson (EA ID) some years ago.
The atmosphere is surreal as you enter and are captured by its unique design."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Here are two of the campuses historic landmarks. Aren't they magnificent?! To the left is the 'Livin' Rum Townhouse' and to the right the 'Spring Steppe Townhouse'. (EA ID: Hey_Harrie)
Make sure to not loiter in this area or you will be placed on academic probation."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The renowned 'Poets Street' is what replaced our old home. We may not have it to come back and reminisce in front of but BojanaSimsYT (EA ID) did such an astonishing job that we went with her for the new house!
I hear that a café is still in the works on the first floor..."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Minzy, Rose's mom, ended up calling during the tour, autonomously. So, they all stopped in front of the sports stadium so that they could talk.
Tumblr media
"I think I hear a debate going on. Lets go over and check it out once you get off of the phone! Tell your mom I said hey and we need a minty fresh club gathering soon!"
(The debate was ending by the time that they all walked over to the center)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Well maybe next?!
If you girls could look ALL the way up to both your lefts and to your rights, you can see the two official dormitory spaces. Those twins are called 'Britechester Penthouse' and also built by Hey_Harrie (EA ID).
I'll leave that for when you all move in!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Our last stop is right over there... A building that you girls may spend endless hours inside of during your time pursuing those degrees, Darby's Den. This was built by the same architect as the Pub, Simstorian-ish. (lmao) She is the one that built up Oasis Springs."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I will be stepping down from my position as an art scholar here. However, this does not mean to act reckless as my presence is no longer physically here.
With that being said...
Welcome to Britechester ladies!!!
I have eyes EVERYWHERE. Always remember that!"

Smeargle
Smeargle (#235)
Canisartem domesticus
General Information: Smeargle are bipedal dog Pokémon with long tails that ooze paint-like oil from the tip. Each Smeargle’s tail ooze is a different color. They average in at 3’11 feet tall (1.2 M) and 127.9 pounds (58 kg).
Habitat: Smeargles are overwhelmingly found in human cities, but outside of cities they can be found in oak savannahs and places with cliffs (ie: where they can both seek shelter, find food, and have places to paint/mark their territory). It is rare to find Smeargles outside of human cities, but small populations do exist elsewhere.
Life Cycles: A Smeargle is born to small litters of 1-4 pups once a year in the late Spring. They are good parents who co-parent and live in packs. The only real hierarchy in their packs is that older and more experienced Smeargles are given more respect and reverence than the younger ones. They have intricate and incredibly complex courtship rituals that involve painting.
Smeargles tend to live in caves and abandoned buildings. They live to be around twenty years old. They are eaten by most generic predators, such as large birds, snakes, and Ariadoses.
Behavior: Smeargle are hypersocial creatures that live in packs from a handful of individuals to upwards of a hundred. They mark their territory and communicate with an intricate series of marks made with their tails, which scientists have collected over 5,000 unique marks created by Smeargles. There are vast regional differences in these marks and packs and individuals often have their own that separate them from others in the area. Scientists have come to understand that this is written language, albeit more rudimentary than human languages, but still capable of conveying key information and individuality. The study of Smeargle linguistics is a developing field of language science!
On the back of each Smeargle, they are marked with a paw print by their parent to show that they are a member of the pack. Some groups have more distinct paw marks, while others go for simpler designs. These paw marks must be remade regularly; the process is a regular part of the grooming rituals, where a pack mate marks another and reclaims them as a member of the pack.
Diet: Smeargles are omnivores that can be seen rifling through human garbage and gardens. Be careful what you put in the garbage!
Conservation: Least Concern
Relationship with Humans: Smeargles are beloved Pokémon most popularly seen amongst artistic sorts. They are incredible companions who thrive in homes of many other Pokémon or people, but become depressed and bored when they are in households of 2-3 members. They make good companions for children of all ages, and are quite safe to be around.
Smeargles are synonymous with the visual arts in the same vein that Meloetta and Chatot represent the performing arts. Any art school has at least one Smeargle amongst its Pokémon Staff, even if it’s purely for the sake of it. Artists are the biggest fanciers of Smeargles the world over, the drivers of fancy breeds, Smeargle shows, and the breeding of rare and exotic tail colors in Smeargles. Because of this, Smeargles can fetch surprisingly high prices depending on the type that you buy, and some fancy breeds are known to have health defects in exchange for their fancy looks—a similar problem with many fancy breeds of dogs and cats in the real world. Of course, you could always catch a generic mutt from the streets of any particular city.
When it comes to Smeargle’s symbol of the artistic world, there is a media rival in this regard: Grafaiai. Those who partake in the more experimental and provocative arts of the world, such as graffiti artists, tend to treat Grafaiai as the symbol of punk and alternative art scenes, while Smeargles have come to represent the finer and more mainstream arts.
Classification: Smeargle are in a genus all to themselves, and remain a distinct lineage from many of the other dog Pokémon.
Game Mechanic Explanation: Smeargle can use its Sketch attack to copy any attack, which it can then be used to breed down onto any Pokémon within the field egg group (so long as that is a viable egg move for the offspring). While later videogames place a handful of very specific restrictions on the extent of Smeargle’s ability to replicate any attack, I think that’s boring and it’s way funner to just let Smeargle use sketched powered-down versions of any and all attacks known to Pokémon kind. Additionally, in the moveset spreadsheets (viewable here) the amount of times Smeargle can naturally learn Sketch without human aid has been doubled, since I think it's a little silly that in the videogames it can only learn Sketch once every 10 levels. The change has been made because campaigns can potentially drag on for a very long time, so it makes more sense for Smeargle to learn Sketch every 5 levels and again at level 100.
~~~~~~~~
Hey guess what, if you like my stuff, this is my website where you can find other Pokémon I've written on and more information about the game that I’m slowly making! Check it out! I write books sometimes too.
The Artist
The art vs. the artist: Separating Savannah Marcoset’s music from her misdeeds
By: Elliott Monroe Williams
 -
The problems caused by our modern obsession with “canceling” imperfect people are multiplying every day, touching every single aspect of our lives. Whether it’s a new scandal involving a professional athlete, celebrities like James Corden or Matt Damon, or even someone who simply said the wrong thing in a public place where their mistake was recorded and shared across the world, it seems like every day brings another person who “deserves” to be “canceled”.
What does it mean to be “canceled”? The MacMillan dictionary defines canceling, the verb, as withdrawing support from or ceasing to engage with a celebrity or public figure whose views you dislike.
 It’s one thing to make a choice not to provide further opportunities for a platform or profit to someone whose views or actions you abhor. I support such a choice wholeheartedly and have made similar decisions myself. But does someone’s distasteful action or viewpoint mean you can’t enjoy their creations if you already loved them? Can you still read your favorite books if the author turns out to have repugnant views they simply won’t stop shouting to anyone who will listen? Can you watch the Tour de France during a doping scandal? Can you love a book written in the 19th century after discovering that the author of the book was abusive to his family?
In the case of classical music, is there any truly brilliant composer who wouldn’t be “canceled” if they were alive today?
Does enjoying their compositions mean signing off on their crimes?
From Beethoven through Guesaldo, composers have always behaved badly
They often say instability and genius walk hand-in-hand, and many of our most beloved historical composers were criminals in their own day. Ludwig van Beethoven was famously once arrested for and charged with prowling and vagrancy after walking the chilly streets with no hat, no coat, and no form of identification. He peered through the windows of Viennese citizens’ homes until the constable was called, and a local musician had to identify him.
Johann Sebstian Bach spent a month in jail for terminating a contract with an employer. Pietro Mascagni was arrested for embezzlement (although he was later acquitted of any crime) and was an enthusiastic supporter of dictator Benito Mussolini. While legal, you could argue that such open support for the authoritarian leader would likely lead to being “canceled” today.
Should a man who supported such a dictatorial government in his own time be held as someone whose music must be shunned even today, decades after his death?
Carlo Guesaldo, whose eerie madrigal compositions offered modernist sound centuries ahead of its time, was even known to have murdered his philandering wife and her lover, and potentially also his father-in-law, although this is likely a later embellishment. While he was never charged with the crime, he nonetheless did not deny it.
These men were brilliant individuals with eccentric personal lives. Does the decision to commit a crime mean we cannot enjoy their work without approving of every action they’ve undertaken? What if we speak not of an historical composer, but a modern woman whose crimes have made her a household name?
What about Savannah Marcoset?
A brilliant violinist convicted of serious crimes
 Savannah Marcoset is arguably the most famous classical performer and composer worldwide, but it is unfortunately not for her music. She is currently serving a sentence of life without parole after being convicted of a series of crimes, including multiple counts of false imprisonment in the first degree, a variety of assault convictions, and also for obstruction of justice and attempting to intimidate a witness and jury tampering.
Already well-known as a childhood prodigy at her chosen instrument, the violin, Ms. Marcoset moved into releasing recordings of her own original compositions at the tender age of fifteen. By twenty, she was selling out venues like Carnegie Hall. Classical music aficionados declared her the second coming of Elliott Gould, a new eccentric genius who kept to herself off the stage but shone like a diamond under the lights, with her violin in her hand.
Shortly after finishing her undergraduate degree at the prestigious Juilliard School, she lost her beloved parents in a tragic, still unsolved aviation incident. In the chaos of her grief, she forgot to eat, to sleep, and even to pursue the music that had given her life such meaning before. Her uncle, in an effort to help her regain stability, provided her with an individual who would clean the home, keep her safe, and ensure she had someone to talk to through the worst of her grief.
To her shock and dismay, the man provided to her as an employee and servant turned out to be illegally purchased through a recently-uncovered human trafficking network in the UK.
By all accounts and by Ms. Marcoset’s admittance at her first trial, Jackson Gallagher - the man who had been abducted, sold into modern slavery, and ended up Savannah Marcoset’s unwitting servant - spent more than a year in her employ before the situation was discovered when he was able to pass a message on to his father when Ms. Marcoset took him to the UK to visit.
Gallagher was freed and sent back home shortly after, and Ms. Marcoset spent years in prison after conviction. She was granted parole on the condition that she remain under virtual house arrest, only able to leave for performances, recording sessions, and other professional matters. She also was forced to wear an ankle monitor so that her location could be tracked at all times.
Ms. Marcoset never left her home except for the short trips for performances that she approved with her parole officer. Journalists and reporters came to her home to interview her, and none saw any sign of anything amiss. And yet, shortly after her release, Jackson Gallagher disappeared from his father’s apartment. Declared missing and eventually presumed deceased, Gallagher would only resurface years later, showing up on his father’s front step with two small children and a story.
Savannah Marcoset, it turned out, had been hiding what she called her ‘husband’ and their eventual children together in her family’s home all along.
She was eventually tried and convicted of her crimes, and will never again see the outside of prison walls. She attempted to publish a memoir, whose release was canceled after intervention by Jackson Gallagher’s legal representation, Collins McKay of McKay, Kline, and Benson. McKay successfully argued it would cause emotional harm to her two children, the project was canceled, and Ms. Marcoset’s memoir languishes in a safety deposit box in an undisclosed bank. Ms. Marcoset continues to grant interviews, however, and has recently recorded and released a new album, which will be released in February, titled Permanent Pause.
With the news of her new album, interest in her story has been renewed. Many classical music fans are calling for a boycott of her work, while others make the point that the proceeds will go entirely to a trust that will profit not Marcoset herself, but her two children by Gallagher.
Can we appreciate good music from bad people?
If misdeeds must be eternally punished, even as the person might grow and change with time, this insists that someone is never better than the one time they were at their worst. Do we judge Beethoven by his slovenly housekeeping or even his way of looking into the homes of others while wandering the streets?
Do we cease to listen to Mozart because of his propensity for arrogance and a sometimes less than pleasant demeanor? Do we turn away from Guesaldo’s genius when learning of his single act of double-homicide?
No, we do not.
We acknowledge unfortunate realities, of course, but even so we equally acknowledge the great men and women of music as part and parcel of their time and place. Noblemen in a time when nobility lived above the common law applied to others, composers during the days when what we call classical music was what everyone revered and flocked to see. Celebrities of their time who acted within the more lax boundaries of their day.
I would argue Savannah Marcoset, in some ways, is the same.
Sure, she is a modern musician, but she was raised by a family whose criminality only recently came to light, and continues to insist that she was unaware of her parents’ true occupations until after their deaths. For someone who grew up in a household in which servants were, by and large, unpaid and had been with the family for generations, is it so strange that her sense of what counts as ‘freedom’ was so wildly out of touch?
Of course, I don’t excuse her crimes, and the law has duly punished her for them. She will never see the outside of prison walls, and is only given a single hour each day to exercise outdoors. Jackson Gallagher has successfully ensured she has no legal rights to her two children whatsoever and will likely never see them again. While she is allowed visitation, her visitors must be approved by the prison warden. Beyond her interactions with guards and staff, she lives an utterly solitary life.
She even admitted in a recent interview with a journalist in People Magazine that she doesn’t even know what her children look like, and worries often about them, with no chance to settle maternal worries, as Gallagher has resettled back in the UK.
In many ways, she has been returned to those early days after the loss of her parents, when she lived in a great big building entirely alone, with only her music for comfort.
Some of her greatest work was written while she was in the midst of the crimes she was convicted of. Firecracker, which she herself called ‘a story of falling in love’, was written even while she held Gallagher as a captive within her home. She acknowledged, after conviction, that the idea for the title had been his, a childhood nickname he hoped would gain the attention of the family still searching for him. Its follow-up, Five Stones Thrown (the title is another name for a game called jacks, and Marcoset has admitted it was a sort of personal joke), is perhaps the greatest album of her career. A woman at the top of her industry, channeling her pain, uncertainty, and fear into music the likes of which we haven’t seen in decades if not centuries.
Deciding whether or not Ms. Marcoset’s work has redeeming value shouldn’t be a decision on whether or not she is a good person. Clearly, she has committed heinous crimes she is rightfully being punished for. I don’t support her music because of what she has done, but in spite of it. I don’t believe good music should be subjected to the whims of human misdeeds, but valued far beyond the silly little lives we lead.
In short, separate art and artist, but know who profits off the sales
In the case of Savannah Marcoset, I would never buy another album of hers if I thought she would make a cent off the sale. She is a woman who committed heinous, violent crimes against a man who could not escape her.
But I also know she won’t make a cent.
I take comfort in the fact that all proceeds of sales of her work from the day of her conviction have been moved into a trust that her two children will be able to access once they reach the age of 25.
That said, I know how difficult it is to hear music the same way once you know what was happening during the time it was composed. Firecracker and Five Stones Thrown are albums that tell a story of an all-consuming love, both the good and the bad, but it was a love lived as horror for the other person forced into the story. Gallagher still lives with the physical, tangible results of that horror even today as he parents the children he shares with Ms. Marcoset.
Still, the music is divine, and such perfect melodies should not be lost to our shifting sense of right and wrong. We shouldn’t “cancel” music because the composer is imperfect. It is imperative to separate art from artist, because very few of us have lived pristine lives, and those who create art - musicians, artists, actors, and others - are far from likely to be perfect themselves.
Bad people often make exceptional art.
Every time I purchase a new album by Savannah Marcoset, I do so knowing that she won’t see a dime. Jackson Gallagher and his two children as a result of the crimes she committed against him will.
In that way, it’s them I support by separating art from artist, and not Ms. Marcoset at all.
House Of The Dragon S01E02
Continuing my review of each episode we’re on to episode 2, titled: The Rogue Prince!
Clearly there are a LOT of spoilers here, so please don’t read if you don’t want to be spoiled!
We’re a little slower to start this episode, but we open with our first look at the official opening sequence - and it’s to the previous opening theme music!!!!
It’s as lovely as it ever was in GOT - though maybe a little less clear what’s going on as we move into it. No map this time, instead we seem to be moving through an ancient tomb of some kind - or maybe even the streets of King Viserys’ pet project in his royal chambers - the carved city of what is either old Valyria or perhaps plans for an expanded Dragonstone. We get a bloody rose line flowing between different mechanical sigils, connecting families and alliances that I’m sure are important but I honestly couldn’t keep up with them. It’s less clear what’s going on and what the significance of the visuals are but it’s still beautiful to look at for sure and it’s so nice to hear the old theme music again!
There’s a lot happening between characters this episode, less action and more stage-setting but that’s completely understandable. Milly Alcock’s ‘Rhaenyra’ is still carrying this show, but Emily Carey does a lovely job as ‘Alicent’ picking up some of the slack. I was actually very surprised to see some major chops from ‘Laena’ actress Nova Foueillis-Mosé for how little screen time we got of her and how young she is. She was poised, believable and surprisingly endearing. We get a cast change next episode - Laena will be played by Savannah Steyn moving forward, so I’ll be very sad not to see more of Nova on screen - in my opinion she stole the scene between Laena and Viserys in the gardens.
Matt Smith is a powerhouse. He has had very little screen time thus far and still manages to shine spectacularly every time he’s front and center. His depiction of Daemon Targaryen is nuanced, complex and so enjoyable to watch. There’s currents of spoiled brat, potential villain and ‘Mad Prince’ in every moment of his performance but there’s a vulnerability and sweetness there as well - that’s a hard combination to achieve and Matt nails it each and every time he steps on screen.
We also get more of Eve Best as ‘Rhaenys’ or ‘The Queen That Never Was’ this episode, as well, and - just as I predicted - she is every bit the Sassy Queen we deserve in a GOT spin-off - a barbed tongue to compete with the Queen of Thorns herself. She and Rhaenyra have a brief ‘stand-off’ of sorts and it was lovely to see. The way these two actresses feed off of one another was incredible to watch, they were both totally in their element and 100% on top of their game. I can’t wait to see more of Eve Best as the season progresses and I hope to see more scenes between her and Milly, they really played well off of one another.
The scene on Dragonstone between Daemon and Rhaenyra steals the episode for me, however. The chemistry and tension between the characters alone was utterly profound, but the CGI scenery and dragons are the best we’ve seen to date. The long stairway to Dragonstone looming out of the fog is stunning and so visually appealing, but then we get Caraxes crawling onto screen and I actually caught my breath. He is a beautiful work of digital art and every time we see him he seems to get even more lifelike and fluid; The Blood Wyrm indeed! We briefly see Syrax as well, but not nearly as much as I’d like - she is just as stunning as she was in the first episode, however, so how can I complain?
Daemon and Rhaenyra’s stand off is everything I want and need in my life. Rhaenyra as a character is definitely quickly becoming a favorite, and Daemon isn’t far behind. Once again, however, I find myself liking almost all of these characters. Viserys, who I was not too fond of last episode, moved up a few points in my opinion by refusing to wed Laena, despite pretty much everyone telling him it’s the right move at the moment. Alicent is still much too young for this, but she’s better suited to the role than Laena would be. The tense stage between Rhaenyra and Alicent moving forward has been set to absolute perfection and I cannot wait to ache and cry for the falling out between them. I wish they had a happier story, but that’s not the nature of what we’re watching here.
A shoutout to ‘Corlys Velaryon’ actor Steve Toussaint, he brought Corlys front and center this episode and held him there marvelously. He wasn’t as strong a presence as Rhaenyra or Daemon or even Rhaenys - but I get the feeling that was intentional. Corlys is a quieter sort of storm, and I know for sure we’re going to see much more dramatic things from him moving forward, especially with he and Daemon’s secret meeting at the close of the episode.
The Crabfeeder... aaaah, we got our first look at this mysterious character this episode as well. I don’t know if they’re setting him up to be a ‘Big Bad’ or if we’ll see him eliminated as early as the next episode, but either way his design was fantastic and highly memorable.
The costume and design department for this show have really proven that they are not here to fuck around - each and every one of these characters are decked out to the nines and we love to see it.
FINAL RATING: 10/10
As far as I’m concerned, this is the pinnacle of television. Everything from the writing, to the cgi and costuming and sets. The acting, it’s all here and it’s all as good as it gets. House Of The Dragon has cemented itself as THE show to watch right now for me. I have nothing to critique or complain about right now except having to wait six days and twenty hours to see the next episode!
COME ON HBO! Get on the BINGE wagon and give us the whole season all at once, cowards!
Described as “large and costly” by celebrated Georgia historian Charles C. Jones Jr. in 1890, the old Chatham County Jail is noteworthy for its exuberant Moorish-influenced tower (106 feet high) which replaced the original octagonal Byzantine style tower (93 feet high) following a fire in 1898. The McDonald Brothers Jail Building Company of Louisville, Kentucky, constructed the brick and iron 117-cell jail with the assistance of local architect DeWitt Bruyn and contractor W. F. Bowe. The jail was closed in 1978 with the completion of the new Chatham County Jail on Montgomery Street and the building gradually became a largely ruined shell. The Savannah College of Art and Design acquired the old jail in 1989, restoring only the jailer’s residence and tower.
—MEET VIOLET MARINO;
welcome to marina, violet marino ( cis female, she/her ) ! they are a twenty-nine year old who has lived on the island for one year. word on the street is they’re currently living in marina heights and works as an artist/curator. everyone also says they look a lot like olivia cooke. what do you think?
name: Violet Marino (prev. Violet Marino-Brooks) dob: January 9th residence: Prospect Hill occupation: artist, curator
TLDR; Violet is an artist who lives in Prospect Hill who has been recently widowed. She's an artist living in a home with her mother-in-law. She's the middle Marino sibling and and working on moving on with her life.
FAMILY BACKGROUND
Violet was born in a Savannah, Georgia. She is the middle child of the Marino trio and the daughter of a politician and a typical southern belle. There had been a hefty weight, for as long as Violet could remember, to always place her family name and reputation above all else. Above her passions, above her feelings, all else. No exceptions.
A people pleaser to her core the middle child vied for her parents approval, whether that be declining parties she was invited to, breaking up with her boyfriend as soon as her parents learned of who his parents were, or even as minuscule as never dying her hair despite the urge to try out the newest trend. Violet fell in line, the only part of her that seemed to be outside of the rigid rules her parents set was her art. In that medium she had no barriers or strictness. Everything in her art was fluid and as long as she labelled it a hobby her parents left it alone. Anything from her paintings to sculptures, it could be seen it was the direct opposite of the image Violet was born to uphold.
For the most part she didn't question her parents much and adored her siblings, that was until the cops showed up to their front door and Vi's world as she knew it teetered off its axis. Their was a certain betrayal she felt towards every single member of her family: towards her father for abandoning Jesse, towards her mother for allowing it, towards Isabella for being at that party, and for Jesse for not taking a moment to think. Vi had always considered every single person in her family when she did anything and it seemed that she didn't cross their minds at all.
When her parents moved them away, Vi kept her head down, kept her grades up and moved to attend NYU as soon as she could. It was 4 years of absolute bliss, to live outside of her parents shadow. To do what she wanted, when she wanted, and who she wanted. Her art skills continued to grow and she felt like she couldn't learn enough. After graduating she moved in with her then boyfriend and it was only after a year of being together did she finally introduce him to her parents. If she had any reservations about the night they were quickly washed way seeing her parents adoring to her boyfriend. It wasn't until she realized the reason why. Rick came from a family that had wealth in the form of farms. Leave it to her parents to support when there was financial gain.
A few months after that Violet was engaged and subsequently married. The newlyweds didn't enjoy their bliss for long before Vi and her husband were moving to Marina. Rick's mother needed help after her husband's passing keeping up with the farm and the doting son he was he agreed to come with Violet in tow. It was nice, new scenery and another chance to start fresh with her siblings that also lived there. She quickly became fond of the island and her new job, though her mother-in-law had wanted Vi gone immediately. In many and also in no words at all she insinuated that her daughter in law was nothing but a golddigger. It was easy enough to ignore because Rick didn't believe her but it did hurt. A people pleaser she tried for the first few months to change the impression, though was unsuccessful. Then finally Violet didn't care. The call came in the middle of the night, Rick out of town back in NYC visiting friends was killed in a hit and run. Violet had never imagined that she'd be widowed in her twenties. It was hard grieving in a home where she constantly felt welcome by her MiL and now his siblings and family (not all of them but most).
PRSENTLY
It's been 8 months since Rick's passing and Violet is still taking it day by day. She continues living in Prospect Hill. Part of her wants to move and then part of her wants to keep the only connection she still has to her late husband, whether his mother likes it or not. She has thrown herself into her work at the museum and currently scouts out other local talent to put together an exhibit.
PERSONALITY
Violet has a huge heart and deeply cares about those closest to her. Part of her still does care what other think or the way she presents to others, it's still engrained in her though she's working to unlearn. She spent so much of her life looking for her parents approval and doing what they wanted that she's still learning what it is she likes and doesn't like. She stress bakes, has a million and one shirts that have paint stains on it, and will hum randomly to herself trying to remember songs she's long forgotten. She's kinda clumsy mostly to her own detriment but sometimes other people and their things are casualties.
WANTED CONNECTIONS
HER IN-LAWS; Literally anyone from Rick's family (siblings, cousins, his mother!!!) how they feel about Violet is truly utp but his mother in not so many words hates Vi and it drives her crazy (she has to be liked!!) if its other family members maybe those that are kind to Violet or have mixed feelings about her.
HER REBOUND; the first person post-mourning that she got with. vi sometimes feels guilty for a number of reason but she has found herself gravitating to this person in order to feel better. this person would have known her before her husband died and has an understanding of what she's been going through the last few months.
CO WORKERS; Or honestly anyone who frequents the art gallery, loves art, wants to get into it, etc. Someone Violet can geek out about and spends hours talking about whatever she learned or what they're working on now.
Hi! I hope this isn’t bad to ask but I’m going to the Netherlands in a couple of weeks (first time traveling outside the US) and I was wondering if u have any recommendations on things to do/foods from the area I should try?
hi anon!
I've been thinking about this for a while, cause I wanted to give you some tips that aren't also in any google search, so here they are, sorted into an activity, food, and general tips to survive the country section (it's mostly focused on Amsterdam and Utrecht, cause that's where I have the most experience)
Under the cut cause I had a lot to say apparently
Activities:
In Amsterdam, I love the Hortus, which is a botanical garden dating from the 17th century! It's partly outside but there are several indoor parts that are really pretty!
This probably is in the google searches but the Amsterdam Light Festival is going on, and it's really fun. There's a walking route and boat tours, but you can also just keep your eyes open when moving through the city and spot the art works that way
The Hallen in Amsterdam is a really fun place to go if you want to do something a little more lowkey, there's a few cute stores, expositions, a market hall-style food place and a cinema, as well as some events that they host certain days!
I haven't done this myself but the Adam Tower (in Noord, so you can take the ferry from central station which is fun) has a lookout deck where you can see the whole city! There's a swing set where you can book a place to swing over the edge I think (Europe's highest swing let's go). My brother did this a few years ago and thought it was really fun!
If you like books Savannah Bay in Utrecht is one of my favs, one of the top bookstores I've ever been to in my life in general I think
When in Utrecht pls hit the Miffy stoplight, it takes 5 minutes and she's a national icon (it's literally just a stoplight with a Miffy figure and it's adorable)
This may not be worth it if you're only here for a short period of time but if you have a day where you want to escape the city, Dutch beaches are beautiful even in the winter! The practice of uitwaaien (lit. outblowing), or walking into the wind to feel more invigorated (specifically a winter thing and popular among the Dutch especially on Boxing Day or New Years Day), is really nice to do sometimes, and a beach walk can be nice for a change!
Food:
Stroopwafels are on every list BUT I'd specifically recommend getting a hot one somewhere, cause they're much better than the packaged ones! They sell them at outdoor markets and I'm sure there's also some stores that have them!
Everyone also always talks about hagelslag but I personally prefer vlokken, which is a similar concept but thinner so they're nice and crispy would recommend
If you want a quick lunch, Bagels & Beans is a small chain that's got places across the country, they have nice bagels and I have it on good authority the coffee's also good!
If you want to get takeaway food, I would highly recommend Surinamese food. These generally don't really have restaurants and the places I've been to haven't really differed in quality so I'd just pick a nearby one but you simply must eat roti (a dish popular across the Caribbean so not specifically Surinamese but delicious) it rules so hard
Editing this cause I just walked past an oliebollen stall and you should absolutely try one of those if you’re here on time they’re a traditional Dutch new years treat!
General tips:
Always look every way when crossing the street even if it's one-way cause bikes can and will come from everywhere
In a similar vein: some tourists think bike bells are rung simply for fun, they are not, they have the same function of a car horn! If you hear one please do get off the road lmao it'll save you a lot of cursing from the locals
Pretty much everyone here speaks English really well, but a general rule of thumb for non-English speaking countries is that it's really appreciated if you learn at least hello and thank you in the local language (hallo and dank je wel in Dutch)!
Finally, a request more than a tip: please don't rent a bike cause it's genuinely dangerous. 99% of tourists can't bike that well and even those that can aren't used to the type of traffic here, as it's incredibly chaotic because of all the bikes, and tourists on bikes are even less prepared for that than ones that are walking (I know it looks fun I get it but the amount of times I've almost gotten into an accident bc a tourist made a weird swerve is so high I just had to put this in)
I hope you have a lovely trip anon, enjoy!!! <3
