hello.
I have returned from the trenches of Twitter to inform yall that there is an effort to mobilize against Johnson & Johnson's decision to extend their patent on a life-saving tuberculosis drug. Renewing this patent will prevent millions of people from accessing life-saving care.
If you would like to learn more, watch this video:

Let Me Get This Straight: whispers of some quiet conversation
youtube
SciShow: We have the first practical CRISPR gene therapy! For sickle cell anemia! Me: Huh, interesting. Isn't that mostly in Africa?
SciShow: But it's really expensive, so right now it's only an option for privileged people.
SciShow: Not the many poor people who usually suffer from the disease.
SciShow: Which is not a good look.
Me: Yeah, they should just make their high-tech, experimental, revolutionary treatment cost less money.
Incidentally, I saw this episode the day after I learned the SciShow's creator, Hank Green, is a fan of BreadTubers. Specifically, ContraPoints.
So I’m not exactly shocked.

Fun Facts about Fireflies and Fluorescence under the cut :)
FUN ANIMAL FACT: Fireflies glow due to a chemical reaction between the molecule Luciferin and the enzyme Luciferase (and quite a few other molecules including ATP and oxygen). While fireflies use their bioluminescence for mating reasons, the reaction can be used in a test named the -ATP fluorescence assay- to detect bacteria in various bodily samples and monitor levels of photosynthesis in crop fields (although it was originally developed to potentially detect living cells on Mars)

You ever see an influencer tweet at like 4am, and internally say
What are you doing up at this hour mister????
Because you forget that timezones exist and it's barely midnight where they are? Because I do.

So often in life, as you go on livin',
you have to replenish your energy,
a tiny snack or a whole Thanksgiving,
you need to fight against entropy.
But food can be hard, or stringy, or tough,
it isn't just mush, and your tongue's not enough,
mice or people or fish or crocs,
all of us need our mouth rocks.
Mouth rocks help us form our words,
without them, we look a little absurd,
but mostly, they're useful for when we eat,
pizza or wheat or carrots or meat.
Mice or people, fish or crocs,
all of us need our mouth rocks.
- Hank Green

The eclipse is almost here and many of us will find ourselves thanking modern technology for the ability to predict solar eclipses so reliably- but should we? Find out about the ancient Babylonian method of predicting eclipses!

Its’s absolutely insane to me that there is quality educational content out there that is 100% free for the viewer on something as accessible as YouTube. Channels like SciShow, Crash Course, ASAP Science, Khan Academy, TED (and all its associated channels), etc are paving the way for the future of education. For centuries, academic knowledge was only available to the elite, people who could shell out tons and tons of money every year, and largely, it still is. But channels like this, just giving away free content is, or at least can be, the future. Just people helping other people better themselves, and that is beautiful. In a world where it seems that everything is going downhill, this makes me so incredibly happy.

Summary: a slightly longer video from SciShow, explaining how every physical thing in the universe exists because of vibrations and resonances at different frequencies, from quantum fields, to atoms, and stars and galaxies.
Eye contact. Properly edited closed captions. Just under 15 minutes.
This video really resonated with me. :-) Also, I can't help thinking that this means that the Enlightenment Philosophers and Alchemists weren't really that far off the mark when they came up with the theory/hypothesis of the Music of the Spheres.

My Youtube playlist Disability and (Dis)Ableism (systems, vocabulary, voices) I'm still not fully happy with it. It's still cluttered at the end and there's some longer videos I still need to rewatch. But it's the last day of Disability Pride month! I'm not gonna let perfection come before progress!

I genuinely can’t tell if SciShow Tangents did a Hanukkah episode on purpose or if this was a complete coincidence
