On March 6, 1989, a 44 year old and his colleagues boarded a British Railway train at the Edinburgh Waverley railway station. The group of six men – all town planners from developing cities of India - was headed to Glasgow as part of a government initiative facilitating knowledge exchange. Among them was my father who was thrilled with the exposure to planning and technological advancement witnessed in the city. Fast forward to the year 2017 and his younger daughter, yours truly, stepped into Glasgow for the first time. Head over to the link in bio to read about that sojourn if you haven't yet; linkin bio. . . . . . #glasgow #scotland #glasgowlife #glamour #grit #culture #scotspirit #scotshots #travel #fromthecornertable https://www.instagram.com/p/CfbwToYqyKc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Edinburgh, the Capital of Scotland 🏴 has a history stretching back thousands of years. Notably, the Old Town together with the New Town of Edinburgh forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One end is closed by Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile leads away from it, with minor streets (called closes or wynds) budding off the main spine.
The topography for the city is known as "crag and tail" and was created during the Ice Age. The hilltop crag was the earliest part of the city to develop, becoming fortified by King Malcolm Ill and his wife, Saint Margaret of Scotland in the 11th century and eventually developing into the current Edinburgh Castle.
The rest of the city grew slowly down the tail of land from the Castle Rock to the Palace of Holyrood. This growth continued with the development of the New Town during a time of social reform and prosperity after the Jacobite rebellions of the 18th century.
