Neurosis is still a painful subject for me because they were a band that was extremely crucial to my musical development and a band I developed a strong emotional attachment to. I had a deep reverence for Scott Kelly as a lyricist and songwriter and his style influenced my own. I've seen Neurosis live twice and both times were an incredibly emotional, cathartic experience.

I saw one of Scott's solo shows in 2017 and got to meet him. He seemed like a very gentle spirit, albeit also very introverted and a bit wary of strangers (which I'm the same way, so it wasn't odd to me). I met Scott again in 2018 when Mirrors for Psychic Warfare opened for Godflesh. He was with his wife and they seemed so happy together. During Mirrors' set, she couldn't stop smiling at him.

To find out last year that Scott had secretly been a vicious monster all these years who was ruthlessly abusing his family tore me to pieces. It tore a lot of people that I know to pieces, especially musicians who were close to Scott who had absolutely no idea what he was like outside of their musical or casual interactions. It served as a cruel reminder of how well abusers can compartmentalize their personas.

Another thing I keep getting cruelly reminded of is how incredibly talented people can also be absolutely horrible people. Every time an artist gets exposed for being horrible, this moral conundrum is created where you contemplate if you can still listen to the music. Thankfully, the rest of Neurosis publicly disowned Scott and he was booted from the band in 2019, so I felt okay remaining a fan.

The caution I have on this blog when it comes to blind hero worship of musicians comes from a sound place. Unless we have a solid degree of intimacy with these artists, we really don't know them at all. We know the image that they project to others. Hell, some of us may know the image that they project to us specifically if a friendship forms. Unfortunately, it can all be illusory. Keep your eyes open.

Rep. Bill Foster (D-Ill.), a former physicist, is relieved that another “scientific” mind — namely, serial liar Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) — has joined the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

“As the only recipient of the Wilson Prize for High-Energy Particle Accelerator Physics serving in Congress, it can get lonely. Not anymore!” Foster tweeted Thursday, before roasting his new committee colleague.

“I’m thrilled to be joined on the Science Committee by my Republican colleague Dr. George Santos, winner of not only the Nobel Prize, but also the Fields Medal ― the top prize in Mathematics ― for his groundbreaking work with imaginary numbers,” Foster wrote.

Since being elected to Congress earlier this year, Santos has admitted to fabricating and misrepresenting many aspects of his background, including his work experience and education history. Still, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) gave him a seat on the Science Committee, despite Santos having no experience — real or imaginary — in the fields of science, space or technology.

Scott Kelly, a former NASA astronaut, also mockingly congratulated Santos on his appointment.

“Awesome to have former NASA astronaut and moon walker, Representative George Santos @Santos4Congress on the House Science Space and Technology Committee,” tweeted Kelly, whose brother Mark is a Democratic Senator for Arizona. “To infinity and beyond!”

Numerous members of Congress, including a growing number of Republicans, have called on Santos to resign amid his mounting scandals. The embattled lawmaker has rejected those calls, saying he’ll step down only if “142 people” ask him to.

It's still Learning Disabilities Awareness Month so it is a great time to share that this week I learned that astronaut Scott Kelly has ADHD!

The label didn't exist when he was growing up but in his book he describes the great difficulty he had in school and says that if he were growing up today, he would almost certainly have been identified as having ADHD. Based on how he describes himself, I would say there is no doubt that is true.

Another amazing person with ADHD to look up to (literally back when he was on the ISS and now only figuratively)

Sometimes, a zinnia is just a zinnia. Other times, it’s a landmark.

This weekend, a pretty flower became so much more when astronaut Scott Kelly tweeted its picture back to Earth.

The brilliant orange bloom is the first flower ever grown in space.

The flower was grown as part of the International Space Station's (ISS) plant growth system, also known as “Veggie” (Vegetable Production System).

The experiment, which is the first to grow food in space, made its way to the station in May 2014.

It’s a chamber equipped with green, red and blue LED lights, a root mat and “pillows” with seeds, which are watered periodically and treated to a barrage of photos and scientific experiments to see how plants do in microgravity.

The goal was to treat astronauts to leafy greens in space and has been quite a success — a relief to astronauts who otherwise have no access to freshly grown produce on the station.

This new little (edible) flower will certainly brighten up the otherwise sterile atmosphere of the ISS, but it wasn't just selected just for its looks.

Scientists hope to learn more about space gardening from these tough-to-grow flowers that could help with their next goal crop — tomatoes.

The gorgeous picture of the zinnia offers hope for future crops, but it was a close call.

A drought wiped out several plants at the beginning of the experiment, and the zinnias that followed the lettuce experiment didn’t fare very well.

Scientists later figured out that the plant mat that contained the flower seeds was inhibiting air flow and causing the plants to become moldy and die.

An unplanned spacewalk didn’t help the needy plants and turnover on the station caused Kelly, who’s in the midst of a year in space, to become designated gardener.

Despite even more hiccups, Kelly convinced NASA to let him water the plants when they looked like they needed it rather than on a rigorous schedule.

The zinnia is now growing gorgeously — and in a release about the gardening coup, NASA notes that new crops will head up to the station soon.

In 2018, there may even be tomatoes aboard the craft — but even those flowering plants won’t hold a candle to space’s beautiful first bloom.
