The Scott Pilgrim Multiverse Theory

So I've been talking to some of my partners and I have coined a new reading of the multiple pieces of media that tell the Scott Pilgrim story and I've decided that I really don't want the cartoon to adapt the comics correctly.

In the comics, the point of his character is through being challenged on his shitty little life, Scott Pilgrim learns how much of an asshole he is and gets his shit together. Eventually developing into someone who can handle a long term serious relationship.

The movie however Scott only really starts to Get It towards the end of the movie, he's good enough to not be Gideon 2 but he's still got a long way to go. Rather than confronting his darker side he finds his darker side to be something he likes about himself. This being said he still is better at the end than when he started but he's got a long way to go.

Now the video game is an interesting spot. Each character gets a different ending depending on who 'Breaks' Gideon in the final level. Ramona gets the standard ending, most people get something they've been wishing for. Scott however gets to remain undeveloped as the video game doesn't challenge him as an actual person and instead he gets all his exs to fall back in love with him along with still dating Ramona.

And so, the Cartoon. I think it'd be really fucking interesting if the cartoon follows Scott's adaptation trajectory, instead of bettering himself he actively becomes a worse person to points never before seen. I don't think it'll happen but like, the pattern is there even if it's not intended.

I do however hope that whatever we get from the cartoon, it is a different take from all the existing pieces of media to carry the Scott Pilgrim name. Scott will probably still have to better himself in the face of all his challenges but it'd be interesting to see it end somewhere else compared to all previous versions of the story. Like all previous versions of the story.

Scott Pilgrim: The Game

This game is kind of weird because it’s a mixture of the movie’s plot as well as the comic’s slightly different plot, which makes it a direct adaptation of neither. That is not a bad thing at all though, since the story is great, the gameplay is great (although quite difficult, and I’m bad at Beat ‘Em Ups), and the music & visuals are some of the best in any game. Honestly, taking pictures of this game on my tiny CRT might only be hurting the audiovisual experience.

I recommend that you play this game for yourself. Preferably, you will play with 3 additional friends as each character alongside you. You might find this a little difficult since the game and it’s DLC were removed from the 360 and PS3 stores in 2014, but worry not, the game is on the Switch, XboxOne, and PS4 with all of the DLC included. I don’t know if I would purchase the game a second time, but I think all of the people who do will love it.
