Acrylic nails are in trend now! With acrylics, you can enjoy sharp, long, elegant nails even if your natural nails are short. However, taking care of acrylics is essential otherwise, you can keep them looking great. Make sure that you avoid jobs that lead to breakage, keep your nails clean, and use strategies if you plan to have acrylic nails in Scottsdale for the long term.

Cutthroat Island: An Underrated Film
Tumblr media
A few years ago, my partner and I went to visit my mother-in-law in Scottsdale, Arizona. I had a miserable time for many reasons. But I remember one interaction very distinctly: We were at Safeway. I was in line for an iced latte because I needed coffee and ice. The person behind me gets excited and says "That is such a cool Geena Davis tattoo!" as they admire one of my tattoos. I asked them to clarify and they told me it looks just like Geena Davis in Cutthroat Island. They assured me it was a movie so bad it was good and that I should take the time to watch it.
Fast forward a few years, and here I am currently working on a draft of a post about Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl that has gotten quite long and will get longer before I am done because I absolutely adore that movie. As I was working on it last week, I thought I might as well check out some other pirate films to see how Black Pearl stacks up to its predecessors. The journey has been interesting, to say the least, and educational, at best. Enter my rental of Cutthroat Island.
Cutthroat Island plays out as a fairly standard pirate film: adventurous chase scenes, ships at sea, treasure, a cool villain, a fun protagonist, and a monkey. However, Geena Davis stars as the protagonist, Morgan Adams. (In case you're wondering, I do think she's part of The Addams Family, but that's my own headcanon.) This at a time when female action/adventure protagonists were even more rare in films than they are now. Watching it, I definitely see the DNA threads that came from pirate films before it, and that would be seen in pirate films after it.
Now might be a good time to mention that Cutthroat Island comes with a ton of baggage. I have chosen not to get too deeply into it here because there are so many articles and blog posts about it that do a much better job chronicling the history of the behind the scenes drama than I ever could. That said, there are some ideas associated with the film that are pertinent to know here. Namely: it is a long held belief among Hollywood Execs that a female-led action/adventure film is box-office poison; a sentiment that would largely be cemented in the minds of our culture for a very long time, because of this film, or so a lot of articles I have read will state.
Geena Davis as a lead should have been a big draw. She can do comedy, she can do drama. A pirate film should have a healthy swing between comedy and drama. Strangely, in the first 20-30 minutes of this film, there are quips that Geena should have nailed, but are delivered so stiffly. It's very off-brand for her, and I can easily see why it would be a turn off for audiences and critics, and leave a bad taste in their mouth for a recommendation. I'll agree that the direction there did my girl Geena real dirty. They should be ashamed. But if you can make it past the pain points, which for me end after the carriage chase, she hits her stride in the character.
I like Morgan Adams! It took us a bit to get there but I like her! She doesn't adjust herself to fit into polite society except to wear a dress. She doesn't take any shit. She always seems to be one step ahead of everyone. While her lines were delivered a little stiffly, I can look past that and see her as a whole, and it's worth it!
Tumblr media
Matthew Modine. Yeah. So I read that Michael Douglas was supposed to play beside Geena here, but declined because he's a little whiny child that didn't like that Geena had more script than he did, so he dropped the project. Matthew Modine was their last choice. Funny enough, I honestly don't know who else I would have cast here because I honestly thought he nailed it. Plus the dynamic of the relationship between his Shaw and Geena's Morgan is refreshing for a 1995 movie: He's the damsel-in-distress and she's coming to his rescue. There's even a twist on the caretaker trope where he's tending to her rather than she to him. And he suits the role more than any review I've read gives him credit for.
Honestly, as much as I loved Geena Davis and Matthew Modine here, Frank Mangella as Dawg Brown really is what does it for me here. To my knowledge, I have not seen anything else of his. I am not sure I need to after this. He leans so readily into being an evil pirate, and it suits him so well! He really seems like he's just having the best time with it! While reading about the behind the scenes drama of this film, more than one article stated that Mangella considers Cutthroat Island his favorite role. It very much shows! It's honestly endearing how much of a dastardly jerk his character is in Cutthroat Island.
According to everything I have read, she had to do many, if not all, of her own stunts here. It shows. In the carriage chase scene, she genuinely does not look like she is having fun. There's a moment in the finale fight where she does the brave pirate thing of swinging on a rope across the ship and it's visibly awkward. What I do not get is why Geena Davis spent the majority of the film running around without shoes on? Was this intentional? Did she feel like it actually helped her performance?
Ultimately, Cutthroat Island was panned by critics and remains a cult favorite. I am not surprised. If you can hang on long enough to make it past the first act, you'll have a good time. Pirate movies are fun, after all. But ultimately, this movie is considered one of the biggest box office flops in all of Hollywood History. With a budget of $100 million and only bringing in $10 million at Box Office. Every actor in it and the director were considered box office poison after the film so massively flopped that many of the actors largely faded into obscurity after release. It was also such a massive failure that it was considered the death of the pirate genre as a whole, until Pirates of the Caribbean came along a few years later, reviving and fine tuning the genre into what we know it as today. But that's a post I am currently working on.
It is also not lost on me that I am writing this post the same week that I watched the film, and the same week that I went to go see the new Barbie film. I am indeed having a very feminist viewing week and I love it!
For me, Cutthroat Island gets a good 6/10. It's entertaining, it's not a high thinker. It's high adventure fun that turns some classic sexist movie tropes on their ear and doesn't take itself too seriously. It's fun. At the end of the day, pirate movies don't need to be anything more than that, honestly.
