I was listening to Clue Crew Podcast today and in the SEA episode, it was explained how the theme of the game was loneliness, and how every character in that game has lost somebody, via breakup, divorce, death, and along that theme, Nancy and Ned have also had relationship trouble and were arguing, even getting close to Nancy making the future of the relationship uncertain.
And I realized that this is not only true for Sea of Darkness, now that I think back on it, Nancy and Ned's dynamics have consistently been in theme for every single game. Remember in Captive Curse, how annoyed we all were that they were constantly arguing and getting angry at each other and making drama, interrupting our play? That was a clue. It was a clue that the theme was breakup and revenge, it was showing us that the culprit was someone who held a grudge against their relationship partner. I think the game was hinting at how badly a relationship could go and Nancy and Ned have managed to evade the disastrous outcome by making peace and finding a way to work thru their issues.
And then think of every other game where Nancy and Ned have been arguing and it fit the theme perfectly. And then think of every game that they were pointedly not arguing; remember the Castle Malloy where Ned was stuck at a party, unable to escape but loyal to Nancy to a fault and completely dedicated to her to the point where he didn't even want to speak about how inconvenienced he was. It was a metaphor for Matt! Who was stuck but still completely loyal to Kyler! We could have figured out that they would have stayed together just looking at Nancy/Ned dynamics in the game!
That kind of hint is so subtle I've never realized it before. Seriously, these games, there's never an end to realizations.

My boyfriend is currently in the process of playing Ghost of Thornton Hall. It got to the point where Bess asks Nancy to rate Colton on a Ned scale. Since this is the third Nancy Drew game said boyfriend has ever played, he did not know what Ned looks like.
I pull up a picture of Ned's phone avatar from Sea of Darkness to show him. Said boyfriend looks me in the eyes and says, "Are you dating me because I look like Ned?"
I will neither confirm or deny.

Been listening to the SEA soundtrack and all I can think of is “did the team who made this know it’ll be the last one they all will work on together?” It makes the music feel a whole lot more sullen.

Since Her Interactive laid off most of their staff and outsourced the rest of the game during the production of Midnight in Salem, here’s a list of loose end plot things from prior games I’m disappointed that probably won’t get answered at any point:
In the outro for SPY, Nancy mentioned wanting to track down the rest of the real letters from her mom that Revenant had (Redacted Villain) use to lure her to Scotland.
What exactly was Grandpa Jin’s device in the Shattered Medallion? The outro mentioned Sonny was still trying to track down leads for that, and one of the preorder bonuses from Sea of Darkness was a comic he left on the couch in the pub area of the inn where he mentioned wanting Nancy’s help again, which kinda implied a quasi-sequel to MED at some point.

"Dagny is a nice person. She happens to like girls instead of guys. Some people like cats instead of dogs. Frankly, I’d rather live with a lesbian than a cat. Unless a lesbian sheds; that I don’t like."

There was something extremely homoerotic going on between Lawrence and North in Nancy Drew: Sea of Darkness. The whole time I was unlocking more and more of the song by piecing together the journal I was like “omg he’s singing about North!” And then in his journal he meets his wife, and it’s revealed North didn’t, in fact, die on land, and he was, in fact, singing about the treasure. I sat there like:
😐
“…oh… he’s talking about his wife…”
I knew there was a lesbian couple in this game, and I knew HeR Interactive’s devs had to sneak it in, so I wasn’t expecting much, but there was a point where I literally though, “Jesus Christ, did the devs make this game Nancy Drew: Guise of the Gays or something??”
But no… it was just the straighties all along. 😔
