As an Atheist (and I’m not even sure that’s appropriate just close) there’s no set standard for burial, mourning or even a preference. It certainly wasn’t anything David and I discussed in any seriousness. I’m sure at his age he didn’t expect to need to. He new I was icked out by cremation and he wasn’t ever ecstatic about it himself after me explaining the modern processes to him. I’d personally prefer to be in a crypt, with a door, and a giant black Angel with it’s spear crossing the entrance. I’m sure he’s mentioned Viking Funeral several times in jest (or not)! However, greed and society have made it almost impossible to have an interesting burial much less elaborate statuary. Though I realize we become soulless vessels, I’d still like the opportunity to come back and haunt those I don’t like! Lol Anyway, my point being, is ashes is where we will all probably end up. As land becomes more expensive we all get shoved into smaller spaces. My mom, even though she had a plot, left instructions to be cremated and interred. Sometimes I think how sad no one sees that beautiful piece of pottery I got her from Dirtworks in Seagrove. Beautiful like her, intricate like her personality and just radiant. Here we are again. I wanted David to have something he would have found attractive if he had to look at it. Earthy, rustic, natural…a bit of flash in the bright copper… a little like him. He was always a bright flash in a mundane world. Luckily, thanks to my neighbor and superb potter, Betsy Shanahan Himmelman, at Promethea Arts, I was able to procure such an item. Her talented process includes using foliage from her yard and quite possibly our connecting woods! The driftwood from the numerous beaches we’ve walked here, namely Hammonasset. It seemed to fit. And to have someone local from the town he loved living in. Both of us had finally found a place where we were happy living (despite the “it’s cold” grumbles here and there) I’m very grateful for her art. It’s not within me to toss him into the wind. So having something complex and beautiful, like him, to reflect on and to keep with me, seemed the only appropriate way. (at Connecticut) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoQcy0lvsNH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Mugshot Monday - "Brown Fish Tumbler" by Bruce Gholson of Bulldog Pottery with Morning Glory Cold Brew by Peace Coffee
Did you know there are more than 80 potters living and working in Seagrove, North Carolina? I did not, until my cousin Laurie texted me about a day-trip she was planning.
It's a really cool story that ends with this photo of me holding a lovely tumbler by Bruce Gholson of Bulldog Pottery.
Laurie's family gives my Aunt Corie (her mom) amazing monthly experiences for Christmas instead of wrapped presents.
For this year's excursions, they used the passions of friends and family to influence each destination. I am told that my love of coffee mugs inspired a trip to Seagrove to visit as many pottery studios as possible in one day! 😀
This is an amazing idea, but listen to this twist: The intent was to find the perfect cup to send me for my Mugshot Monday project. 😍
Laurie's only task for me was to review the list of 80+ Seagrove potters to help create some sort of an itinerary.
Lucky for all of us, discoverseagrove.com has maps, contact information, and write-ups of all the Seagrove potters. I really enjoyed going through them all and gave my recommendations.
The only pottery studio I recognized was Bulldog Pottery. Back in 2019, Jeff Oestreich loaned out mugs for his students to study and I loved his Bruce Gholson mug.
On the day of the trip back in March, Laurie continuously texted photos and stories from all the studios they visited. I was geeking out. So much amazing pottery!
And then they arrived at the Bulldog Pottery Studio. Laurie and Corie had a delightful time talking with Bruce and his wife--and studio partner--Samantha Henneke.

Laurie shot a short video of Bruce explaining how he glazed his favorite cup in the studio. I'm now holding that same cup.

One little info-nugget Laurie shared with me is that Bruce's first name is actually "Karl" with a "k"! "Bruce" is his middle name. That made me smile. 😀
What an amazing experience. I kind of feel like I got a Christmas present out of this, too!
Thank you for this fabulous cup, Laurie and Corie! I love it and I love the story even more.

the one thing i miss enormously about living in raleigh is that the city of raleigh itself runs arts centers that have subsidized and thus incredibly low membership rates. i want to go back to paying $90/year for access to a pottery studio, not $90/month. i yearn to get back into ceramics so badly but it’s so expensive in durham that i would feel pressured to spend all my free time in the studio and paradoxically wouldn’t enjoy it as much. and that sucks

The Pottery Tour Continues
The Pottery Tour Continues
Are you tired of seeing pottery yet? This is my last post on pottery for awhile, I promise, but some of these pieces I took pictures of during our brief trip to Seagrove, NC just had to be shared. The thing I love about pottery is that it can take on so many forms and shapes. The NC Pottery Center holds so many really great displays that help the lay person understand the history of pottery in…

Ever year when we go to Seagrove, NC to visit my in-laws we try to pick a new artist to visit. This year my wife and I meet Jinsong and Carol Kim they are amazing artists and wonderful people! I picked out the sculptural pot above with a blue barium glaze!! I really wanted the whole collection.
