The only Oregon painting in my auction to benefit @wckitchen is this one of a surfer at Short Sand Beach. The auction ends this evening, and I hope you’ll take a look and consider supporting a good cause. World Central Kitchen gets 100% of your purchase price, donated directly through eBay’s charity program. Thanks to everyone who has bid so far—I’m looking forward to sending these paintings out into the world. This painting is done with Richeson casein tempera (except for the titanium white. I had to mix my own titanium white, using dry pigment and Richeson casein emulsion). I had wanted to try tempera paints for some time and since people kept asking me about them I decided to get a limited palette of casein colors and see what they are. Tempera paints should be used on hard supports only (to avoid cracking), so I did this painting on a sealed mdf board with the Arches oil paper mounted to it. 6x8 in. In terms of handling, casein paints feel very much like oil paints (I never use any paint in thin washes), the finished painting looks like a gouache painting, but brushstrokes are a bit more noticeable. The paints feel dense which is nice and they smell divine (I think it’s the smell of pine essential oil). They dry VERY quickly on the palette and on the painting (even quicker than gouache). The density of the paints and their quick drying time makes it easy to create dry brushstrokes. The biggest surprise was that most of the colors dry lighter, while in gouache most colors dry darker. In general, on my opinion, painting with gouache is easier, especially when it comes to painting fine details, but I had a lot of fun with my new paints and am going to keep experimenting with them.
