Now, I do not believe stabbing people is an okay thing to do, and I do love Doctor Seward, but if I was Renfield I would have also stabbed my psychiatrist.

rereading dracula for the millionth time and a Thought occured to me. if van helsing’s accent and odd wordings are written down that means both a) seward was sat there doing impressions of him while recording his sad doctor man podcast and b) mina decided it was absolutely necessary to exactly transcribe seward’s van helsing impression when copying the evidence

I enjoy that today’s Dracula Daily discourse is starkly and equally divided between “awww Sewaaaaaard let Renfield have a cat!!!” and “DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES LET RENFIELD HAVE A CAT”

Belated, but I just had this thought about that scene where Renfield meets the polycula and the discussion on here about whether Stoker forgot Jonathan was there or if Renfield left him out on purpose and, well, this happened...

I'm inclined to believe Van Helsing calls kids "it" bc/ that is the grammatically correct thing to do in contemporary dutch
Seward, on the other hand, is a dumbass who heard Van Helsing say it and assumed this was the professional way to talk about miniature humans

okay look we know Seward is being terrible to his patients and his actions are bad
but when he muses about how he wishes he could justify keeping on going and seeing how far Renfield takes it (keeping in mind the Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly song hadn’t been written yet, and also horses don’t really eat goats)… lambasting him for that feels kinda like it’s getting into thoughtcrime territory. Like, yeah, his assumptions are INCREDIBLY ableist and he’s clearly thinking of Renfield as an experiment rather than a human patient under his charge. He deserves all the hate for that. But SPECIFICALLY the thought of “man, I wish I could justify doing this… for science…” isn’t really scorn-worthy? Like. Wishing there was some way he could do the awful thing — that’s a thoughtcrime; he didn’t actually do the awful thing. He hasn’t even tried to do the awful thing. They’re all right that his ableism and actual treatment of patients mean he shouldn’t be in charge of any kind of hospital or asylum (at least by modern standards); but wishing he could do [a war crime/a human rights violation/a animal abuse] for science — that doesn’t mean anything; that’s just a thought.

Jack be suffering
I wish so badly that those last couple of letters from Seward to Arthur could have been on the phonograph, because you just KNOW the agony Seward must be feeling inside, and it is VERY funny.
First off, his best friend asks him to diagnose Lucy, his fiancee. His fiancee who JACK PROPOSED TO. NOT MORE THAN A COUPLE MONTHS AGO
HE HAS BEEN CRYING INTO HIS CHOLER ABOUT HER FOR MONTHS.
And this is probably the first time he has seen her since the rejected proposal!! It is probably horrendously awkward!! He is meeting her again for the first time after he proposed, and he has to diagnose her!!! He cannot tell Arthur how awkward it is because again ARTHUR IS HER FIANCE. The most he can say is “Of course you must bear in mind that I did not have full opportunity of examination such as I should wish; our very friendship makes a little difficulty which not even medical science or custom can bridge over,” and you know there is a world of awkwardness hidden away in that.
And of course Jack misses the pin pricks on her neck because there’s no way this man is looking anywhere near her neck/chest area, and also his expertise is not mysterious illnesses. But luckily he knows an expert!! An expert who owes things to him and can come help the woman he loves!!
An expert who absolutely skewers him instantly in front of Lucy about his lack of game.
Now he has to wonder; does Van Helsing know he proposed to her and got rejected?? Is he roasting him for that on purpose??? Why??? Why is the person he looks up to telling Lucy all about how bad he is with women???
And all this is contained in “I took the hint,” because again he cannot vent to Arthur about it.
Jack Seward, man. Cringe fail mad scientist of my heart.

Seward, heading to Renfield's room: I'm sure this will be a normal patient visit:
Renfield, serenading his pets:
You would not believe your eyes
If 10,000 tethered flies
Lifted my corpse into the sky
