Shanghai Ch F: Christopher O'Connell [1] def. Yosuke Watanuki [2] 6-3, 7-5 Match Stats

📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
Y. Watanuki notably fired 20 aces than C. O'Connell's 8, which helped him to get out of trouble at times, but it did not help anything except for his service games to end up being more risky. This was apparent from his service game winning percentage, where he only won 57% from his first, which put most of his first serves into trouble (hence some shaky moments in the second set), but C. O'Connell cleared his second serves with a 100% winning percentage. Furthermore, the Australian appeared more clutch by saving all the break points he saved, winning 8% more points on serve in general.
On the other hand, both players had their chances, but C. O'Connell successfully converted 18% of his break points. This was mostly as a result of Y. Watanuki's shaky serves, but there were a lot of instances where the former drove the flow that resulted in the latter erring a lot in the crucial moments, and that included the parts he had set points in the second set. Interestingly, Y. Watanuki had 13% more points from his first returns, while C. O'Connell stood out from the second serve returns with 68% winning percentage. The rally tolerance worked just fine for both players with their depth, but the final shot determined where the rest of the flow went.
This marked C. O'Connell's fifth career Challenger title (first this year), propelling his rank 3 lines away to the Top 50. At the same time, Y. Watanuki also achieved his career-high ranking of 77 per the current state of the live rankings, leaving their last year's Yokohama Challenger final meeting as the only moment the match ended in three sets. Definite growth and what a start to the Asian (Challenger) swing for them.

“We have a good rivalry,” Alcaraz said. “I am a guy who doesn’t want to lose in any match. Against him (Jannik Sinner) it is different. I feel a difference. Every time I beat him or lose against him is different. I learn something from every match I play against him.
“It would be great if [the rivalry] was like Rafa and Roger. It would be the dream. For ourselves and the tennis fans.”
- Carlos Alcaraz about Jannik Sinner, during Shangai Masters press conference

Congrats Hubert Hurkacz for entering the 1000 aces in a season club.
Hubert Hurkacz became the latest and just the 9th player in tennis history to serve 1000 aces in a season during his match at the 2023 Rolex Masters against Batista-Agut. The 26th year Pole is certainly his country’s best player ever, having reached the Wimbledon Semi-finals, apart from winning 7 tour titles including two Masters 1000 titles, namely the 2021 Miami Open and the 2023 Shanghai…

Tennis: colpisce l'arbitro, Polmans squalificato e passa Napolitano

Y. Watanuki might have had his own ideas to step up, but eventually, it was not enough due to the amount of pressure coming from C. O'Connell sometime in between, where things could not sustain by then. It started after two consecutive holds, where C. O'Connell tried to press Y. Watanuki more from his forehand winner to force a deuce, but the latter ended up holding his service game to 2-1. For this second set's standards, it was just the beginning.
There were several chances or occasions that opened the path to the break, most of them being driven from Y. Watanuki's forehand side. For example, in the fourth game, Y. Watanuki created a break point out of his forehand winner, only for C. O'Connell to save them and hold again to 2-2. Or the otherwise, where C. O'Connell had a backhand winner to set himself 2 points ahead 2 points before Y. Watanuki's double fault set up the former's break point, but an ace and several winners resulted in Y. Watanuki holding that game to 4-3. By then, it was spotted that Y. Watanuki's second serves were often shaky, which might not be sustainable in the long term.
Speaking of the aforementioned chances, Y. Watanuki had 3 set points in the tenth game: 2 (including the initial one) were a result of his forehand winners, 1 was a result of C. O'Connell's forehand rush. However, C. O'Connell came in a clutch and held that service game 5-5, preventing the match to go to the distance. Somehow, Y. Watanuki's nervy service game did not sustain, with a forehand rush to top the erraticness for C. O'Connell to break 6-5, allowing him to serve for the match. Subsequently, surviving from being one point behind for the first 3 points (including as a result of Y. Watanuki's swift return), C. O'Connell came up with a forehand pass to secure his match point before its immediate conversion thanks to an unreturned serve, taking the second set 7-5 to secure his fifth career Challenger title.
