I adore these clips.

The first half Newt is confused, he’s not sure what I want but I just finished rewarding him a small treat for a leg+wing stretch. He realizes that it got him a small treat, but not a huge reward so there must be something not right about the stretch. To figure it out he breaks down the stretch in to its individual parts: a body lean, the right leg moving, the left leg moving, and finally the wing where he’s rapidly rewarded. He gets super excited by this discovery, tries one more grooming behaviour (the scratch) before honing in on the wing movement which he gets jackpotted for. You can see the instantaneous “ah hah!!!!” Moment when his demeanour shifts from slow critical thought to extreme excitement as he’s getting closer to solving the puzzle.

The second half we continuously see that excited demeanour, although still a little bit uncertain his movements are quick as he’s flashing through all the potential solutions. He tries known cues (lifting his legs) before trying to offer more scratching grooming behaviours (leg movements have been heavily reinforced throughout his life so he’s very focused on that). He tries the stretch again and gets a small treat, you see that excitement and focus kick in as he leans and stretches for the treat even after the hand has gone and he immediately remembers that the wing movement got him a jackpot before and quickly offers the vertical wings over and over again. He got it!

So usually when an imaginary friend is a real thing in a story, it’s either a demon or a ghost or some supernatural boogeyman that probably wants to eat the kid they’ve befriended (Mama, a couple of the Paranormal Activity movies), or “imaginary friends” are just treated as a real thing in the setting, and if a child just thinks hard enough they can manifest a friend into existence (Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Happy).

And somewhere in the middle is an area where the imaginary friend in question is real and they are supernatural, but they aren’t malevolent, and they aren’t entirely honest about what they are. Like maybe they’re a fairy or a god or some kind of boggle from mythology, but they just got caught by a six year old and they don’t have time to get into it, so they just go “…Yes. I’m your imaginary friend. We haven’t met. How do you do.” And then they stick around because they do love this kid, and if you’re a boggle from mythology in the modern day good food is really hard to come by.

And at some level. That’s what I think Hobbes is.
