Posting only the art I made inspired by this question on tumblr! Hope you like it!
I made this sketch for an idea I had a long time ago exploring the idea of the famous myth that sharks "smell a drop of blood in 2 million liters of water" and become uncontrollably frenzy.
This scene depicts a distant event in the past history of my shark civilization.🦈✨

If sharks wore little hats on their heads I bet they would still look really fierce but with a dash of style.

Daily fish fact #737
Whitetip reef shark!
Unlike other requiem sharks, this species can pump water over its gills without needing to ram ventilate, which means it can stop moving and have a rest! These sharks are very slender and hunt at night by squeezing themselves into tight caves in their coral reef habitat.

My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...
Here is a larger image of my Cretaceous Jaws painting (acrylic on card), from 2001. Depicted are two Squalicorax, a Cretoxyrhina eating a juvenile Tylosaurus, and an adult tylosaur.

shout out to goblin sharks and their weird ass jaws! Goblin sharks have a special trait called a “slingshot jaw” where they snap their jaws forward to capture prey. their mouths can extend to up to 110 degrees wide, and shoot out at about 3.1 meters per second!
here’s a diagram of how it works:

How do your sharks react to blood in the water? Hopefully they have out evolved the need for the feeding frenzy of their ancestors.
Sharks having a blood frenzy is just another myth from Jaws. I recommend watching these two videos about it!
Another detail is that the sense of smell is not the best sense of sharks, for them to smell the substance has to flow through their noses, they would have to be very close. What most attracts the attention of sharks is the sound of fish struggling in the water, which they can hear almost a kilometer away. Check out this little noise experiment!
They are also attracted to colors that contrast with the blue of the sea, such as yellow or things that shine like fish scales.
And finally, my sharkfolk are civilized, so if any of them smelled blood in the water, the first thing they would think is that someone was hurt and they would go to them for help, not to eat them! hehe

This reminded me of an old idea I had a long time ago and I decided to sketch it out, a representation of a distant event in the past of the story about the shark civilization! 🦈✨
