“ARE IN GREAT DANGER,” Daily British Whig (Kingston). December 18, 1911. Page 2. ----  A GRAVE CHARGE RE LAKE NAVIGATION. --- Government Official Says Sailors Are Careless and Endanger Lives of Passengers. ---- Montreal, Dec. 16 - "The lives of thousands of passengers are being endangered yearly, not so much by defects in our navigation laws as because these laws are not enforced. I sometimes wonder how many passengers there would be on the great lakes and on our inland waters generally if only they had the least idea of the risks they run."
This was the statement made by Captain Charles Moller, compass adjuster and marine surveyor to the dominion government, in discussing the finding of the wreck commissioner recently relation to the stranding of the Canadian Lake Line's steam ship Coruna last summer.
In this particular case it was stated by officers of the vessel that the vessel went aground owing to the fact that while lying at a wharf in Montreal previous to the voyage on which she stranded, she was struck , by an outgoing steamer, the -impact destroying the accuracy of  the compass.
Captain Moller stated that the.law required that a second compass be carried by all vessels. but that the law was not enforced. In his opinion owners in many cases would promptly supersede a captain who insisted on the extra expenditure. In cases where a second compass was carried it was generally stored away and never referred to, much less adjusted.
Lookout men, according to Captain Moller, are habitually careless and seldom make reports on lights or on other matters that do not seem to them to be of much importance.'
The reason, according to Captain Moller, that the law is not enforced, is that there are too few inspectors and consequently. the Canadian system is defective and compares most unfavorably with that of the United States.
Captain Holler intends going to Ottawa to lay the matter before the authorities.

Overview of marine surveying and types of marine surveyors
Marine surveying is that part of the approved maritime service that involves assessing the damage that occurred to sea vessels or other similar water transport, for the purpose of insurance claims, selling or purchasing, or retrieving damaged vessels and similar drives. Insurance companies generally do not hire marine surveyors since it is a costly affair, nevertheless, to assess a vessel these companies obviously need a marine surveyor who is qualified and authorized to carry out the assessment along with the evident proof of training and skillsets essential to carry out an assessment of the state of the vessel.
The qualities and qualifications of a marine surveyor are not strictly monitored and still, a remains quite a free-for-all industry, and the reason, anyone may practice as a surveyor. Elementary credentials that are preferred to become a marine surveyor are a proper working knowledge of the vessel’s mechanical systems, boat and other water transport vehicles its design & construction. However, in case the aspirants hold a degree or other equivalent qualifications in engineering then it would add up to their advantages.
Tumblr media
While discussing the duties that entail the job of a marine surveyor, generally speaking, the marine consultancy may carry out the following tasks, namely, conducting surveys to certify that standards of the vessel is maintained as per the norms and regulations, carrying out inspections as and when required, check and report the status of the safety equipment, machinery, and other technical devices, assess and appraise ships and other transport dry cargo vessels for capacity and carryout survey online assignment.
Marine surveyors are categorized into different types, government surveyor – the one who carries out surveys on ship registration, and implements ship safety standards, Cargo surveyor – appointed by the cargo owners, they regulate the actual cargo load, Classification surveyor – who checks ships for mechanisms and machinery are built and upheld accordingly, Independent marine surveyors Singapore – carries out a range of responsibilities, like inspecting ships their cargoes, other mechanical and critical conditions such as quality of fuel quality, and so on.
In order to streamline the process of surveying, organizations like universal marine surveys, take an active part in the surveying undertakings. This apart the organization also efficiently carries out, naval architecture ship design services, lab testing services, and so on.

So, I’m seriously looking into getting into tall ship sailing (waiting on follow-up from an interview rn) and I’m wondering for getting into it more long-term -
what do people do after sailing tall ships? Like, it’s a pretty physical job, and I’d assume there’s a point where your joints just can’t keep up with it.
Are there other jobs in the industry that people move to? I’m not really keen on the idea of moving up in the ship’s hierarchy- admin and being someone’s boss both aren’t really my thing. Do people retrain in completely different careers? Go back to whatever they were doing before they started sailing?
Anyway, I know your sample size might not be super large so I’d appreciate anything. Thanks a bunch!
This is hard to answer directly - on the one hand sailing tall ships is such a niche industry that there are limited pathways for straightforward advancement. But on the other hand, it overlaps with such a large number of other industries, and requires such a jack of all trades skillset - tourism, carpentry, history and preservation, hospitality, marine electronics, etc. etc. etc. - that there's a lot of ways forward for what I guess I'd call lateral advancement: moving to another job which uses most of the same skills. So there's no one answer, but if it helps, here's some things my tall ship deckhand friends have ended up doing, after no longer deckhanding tallships:
Get a captain's license and keep sailing. Captains often have it a bit easier physically (balanced out by the mental stress lol), and are paid better. Owning your own boat is optional; plenty of companies hire captains by the season to sail the boat, while the management of the company is dealt with by the actual owners. (This is what I did! I don't have the sail-hauling arms I did as a deckhand, but my knees and bank account are both in better shape).
Bosun, first mate, engineer, some other specialized non-captain crew member, usually involves licensing or other education that's useful down the road if you switch to an adjacent career
Racing yachts
Captain for hire on private vessels
Outward bound guide, other wilderness education programs
Harbor cruises, lobster tour guides, and other motor-powered tourist boats, both as captain and as crew - you have the patter and the safety skills but you don't want to deal with the hassle of sails
Water taxis, ferries and other passenger vessels
Lobstering, fishing, aquaculture, tugboats, other non-tourist waterfront industries
Marine surveyor, marine electrician, other specialized technician
Working in a shipyard - good fit for all the fit-out skills of sanding, painting, varnishing, covering and uncovering the boat
Cruise ship hostess
Train conductor (the passion for the early 1900s carried over well)
Working at a a museum focused on local maritime history
Tour guide for local buses, walking tours, etc
Boatbuilder (IYRS, Wooden Boat School)
Teaching the captain's license courses (nota bene: there were obviously some other steps between deckhand and teacher, notably ten years of being a captain in between. But this is what they settled into when they decided sailing was too physically taxing, so I want to include it).
Carpentry, house painting
Designing and selling custom made van-homes (apart from the technical skills, living on board a ship helps familiarize making use of every square inch of space)
Sailmaker
Of course there's other friends who went on to try something completely new and unrelated - I think because so many of the people who start sailing tall ships are here for something completely new in the first place, that's not an intimidating prospect so much as an exciting one. But many of them did make use of tall ship skills even when moving on from tall ships, so I hope the above list is helpful in giving a broad sense of what can follow!

The final door is no. 24 and that means today is Christmas Eve and so let's see who greets us today and it's the old lady herself. HMS Victory is here to wish you a Merry Christmas.
Tumblr media
HMS Victory in Snow
More about her here:
Our famous lady was designed by Sir Thomas Slade, Senior Surveyor of the Royal Navy. She was launched in 1765 and used around 6000 trees of which 90% were oak, the remainder being elm, pine and fir. She was not commissioned until 1778 and this long period of weathering resulted in her timbers being well seasoned which was a major reason for her long life. She was a First Rate Ship of the Line with an outfit of 100 guns on 3 decks.
She was in active service for 34 years. She served as the flagship to a number of distinguished Admirals and fought at the first Battle of Ushant in 1778 (Keppel), the Second Battle of Ushant in 1781 (Kempenfelt) and the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797 (Jervis). In 1797, she was pronounced unfit for further active service and was due to be converted to a hospital ship. However, when HMS Impregnable was lost in October 1797 leaving the Admiralty short of a First Rate, the decision was taken to refit Victory which took place at Chatham between 1800-1803.
As part of an extensive reconstruction, extra gun ports were added, increasing her guns from 100 to 104, the magazine was lined with copper, the masts were replaced and the paint scheme changed from red to the black and yellow seen today. She sailed for Portsmouth in April 1803 and Nelson hoisted his Flag onboard in May 1803 as Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet. Admiral Lord Nelson was Victory’s most famous Admiral.
On 21 October 1805, she led the British Fleet under his command into battle against a Franco-Spanish force off Cape Trafalgar. Nelson was shot at the height of the battle and died at 16.30 when victory was assured. SHe suffered a lot of punishment, 57 men were killed and 102 wounded, and the ship was so badly damaged that she had to be towed to Gibraltar for emergency repairs before returning home with Nelson’s body onboard.
After further service in the Baltic and off the coast of Spain, she was placed in reserve in 1812 and was moored off Gosport as a depot ship. Flagship of the Port Admiral, Portsmouth from 1824, she became flagship of the Commander-in-Chief in 1899. She then slowly deteriorated at her moorings until a campaign to save her was started in 1921 by the Society of Nautical Research (SNR).
In 1922 she was moved into No 2 dock Portsmouth, the oldest drydock in the world, for restoration. The work was completed in 1924 and preservation continued under the supervision of the Society for Nautical Research. The ship subsequently underwent another extensive restoration programme to make her appearance as close as possible to that at Trafalgar, for the bicentenary of the battle in October 2005. She is still in commission as the flagship of the Second Sea Lord/Commander-in-Chief Naval Home Command.

Welcome back to Surveyor unnecessarily going through tiny details of Rodamrix because he is just That unhinged. I just think it's cute how Rodamrix gave the crew actual roles, and they're actually noticeable on screen, especially with these guys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Stabilize steering)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Divert Power)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Download Data)
In Alternate, Blue and White do actually keep with their roles onscreen (Red, not so much, but in all fairness, my man is going through horrors beyond comprehension)
White is easily most noticeable, always doing anything relating to communications
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Blue was just a taaad bit harder to notice, but that's mainly because I mistook their tablet as like a temporary gift Tan gave them as a time passer while they rested in Medbay.
Tumblr media
However, for some reason, even after leaving it behind when running to get pizza for Red...
Tumblr media
My man just somehow gets it back when on the ship.
Tumblr media
And at first I thought, what the heck, did they STEAL it?!? Because it's surely not theirs, it's Tan's. Well, Blue's a technician, so clearly the tablet was theirs the whole entire time and I didn't realise.
Not to mention the fact they can just freaking do this???? Does nobody question the fact Blue could just hack into the ship system??? They just did that! They found the map AND a way to open a locked door. Blue should not be able to do that!!! But they did! Technician skills I guess???
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good for them, I guess!
Now this aligns to both Blue being techy AND White being the communicator (and is also just an even more minor detail), but just them having ways of calling each other digitally is cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's no wonder they (and Red) stand next to each other in the crew photo!
Tumblr media
And an even TINIER detail which might even just be SHEER COINCIDENCE because I'm just that much of a loser
I think it's funny how Purple has stronger dislikes to Red and White as they killed those two in Original, meanwhile Pink has a BIG thing on Blue while also being the one to kill them in Original.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, this could easily just be sheer coincidence. I just thought it was funny. Pink is just REALLY mean to Blue in both series /J

A Hidden Danger pt:1
Being a human in this strange universe was not as easy as it had used to be. Earth has been gone for a while now, most of the species being kidnapped by pirates or giant snake people, and now being treated like a dainty flower that would break to the lightest breeze by Carrion's guardian, a large bipedal bovine woman, called Trish.
"I am telling you it'll be fine! I'll be careful. Besides, it'll be amazing to see a new planet that not even the rest of the community knows about!" The twenty year old human states in an excited tone before grumbling at how uncomfortable the suit Trish was making him wear was.
"I know you'll be careful. We all will, but it's more of I don't want you harmed." Trish sighed as she looked down at her charge that came up to the middle of her brown furred torso, although the protective suit hid most of her features, besides her horns which were curled into a similar shape like a Terran's highlander cow.
"Technically, I should not have allowed you to go on this expedition in the first place. I can get in major trouble, I am supposed to be helping you." Trish states as Carrion looks back up at her and gives a tired sigh. Her ear flicks slightly as the door to the steel box they were in opens, allowing the rest of the expedition crew to arrive.
A large bipedal bear steps through the door, their belly straining against the protective fabric of the Hostile Environment Neutralizer Suit. In the padded hand of their suit, they carried a large briefcase like box. This was Tur. They were the group's expedition biological field agent. "Ah, it is good to see you are both already prepared. All we have left is to wait on Nellion, our geologist, and the surveyor of the expedition."
The geologist was another humanoid figure, only having an inch on Carrion compared to the over two feet the other two had him. Someone here didn't make him feel too small for once. An epicene voice rumbles through the speaker system of the suit.
"Trish, it is wonderful to have you with us again. We missed you." Nellion turns to Carrion, stepping closer to the human, allowing him to see the feline like eyes barely through the darkened glass of the helmet.
"It is good to see you as well, Nellion. This is my -" Before Trish could finish, Nellion interrupted, causing the guardian huff in annoyance.
"You must be Carrion, our new archeologist! It is wonderful to meet you, I am sure you will do wonderful." Nellion gave Carrion as Cheshire smile before heading to a free corner of the steel box and pressing a button.
The elevator they were in began to slowly lower, bringing them to the vehicle bay of the small explorer ship. A rover large enough to fit them all laid on it's dock bed, prepared for it's mission. The group of four take up their seats as the engine flared to life, blue glowing from it's center. The exit ramp lowered as the hover pads raised up the rover a good foot of the ground.
Before them laid what was an empty wasteland, consisting of nothing but jagged stone and harsh winds across the sandy stones. "Wow. I thought we'd be landing on one of the jungle areas." Carrion states as the wind fills the bay, the sand plinking of the glass ineffective in scratching or otherwise damaging it.
"This is as close we could get to one of the older plant species on the planet. The station needed to see if we'd be able to use it for better structural support in upcoming colonies." Tur spoke loudly as their speaker rumbled out, but it was barely heard over the howls of the sand. Nellion, who was driving the rover, had begun to pilot the rover to a break in the fury that was the wind.
"Trish?" Carrion rumbled out to his guardian that was sat to his left. His helmet turned to face her.
"Yes?" Her helmet turned towards him, the inside beginning to fog up slightly from each word spoken.
"This is a lot dif-," He began to say before stopping and leaning his head to look around her, his eyes squinting at something distance. Trish turns her head to look over to her left. A short red blip broke through the torrent of sand.
"Hey! Something is over there!" Carrion shouts, pointing at the blip. Nellion squints before turning to Tur. "Let's check that out first. We have a few days to get the sample. This planet was supposed to be uninhabited."
Tur nods in agreement. Nellion begins to type onto the console, and the rover begins to hover towards the red blip. Upon getting closer to the blip, allows them all to see it is a red light connected to the side of the rock face. A large metal door that looks like it was sandblasted for a hundred years also rests in the rock face.
"Nothing to indicate sentient life was found when we scanned the planet earlier." Tur hummed in a curious tone as Carrion climbed out, much to the surprise of Trish who climbs out with him.
Getting up to the door, it was more visible to see the sand had grinded the once air-tight door enough so something could find more purchase. "Trish. Think you'll be able to open this?" Carrion asks as he runs his hand against the sanded door.
"I appreciate the compliment on how strong you think I am, but if it's a standard blast door, I ain't opening it." She states as she could just feel the puppy eyes from Carrion. "Ugh, fine, I'll try. Stand back in case something breaks horribly."
Carrion stands behind her as she hooks her padded fingers into the groove. The door lets out an ear grinding screech, but it opens none the less. Upon opening, the doors lock, no longer needing her to force it. The way down almost horribly dark. Carrion flicks on his H.E.N.S.' built in light, about to step in.
"Wow, there! I go first, as I have to keep you safe." Trish places a hand on his chest as Nellion and Tur step out of the rover. Carrion blinks before allowing her to go first. The rest of the team was not far behind them.
After setting down the grimy steel hallway that was illuminated by their suits' lights, the entrance groans. The locking mechanism snaps loudly, releasing the door. It closes, sealing them in.
Turning around after it was too late. What Nellion said next was lost on Carrion as his universal translator.
This is my attempt to throw a hat in the ring of @wolven91 's amazing universe him and a few others are making. If I have anything wrong with in the lore, please let me know! C&C very much welcomed.

Mika x Freminet
A/N: My second work to be posted on here ever. Constructive criticism is welcome, I hope you enjoy the story.
The geography of Fontaine is one that many cartographers would consider "impossible". Even the most renowned cartographer would have no choice but to concede to the watery terrain that overtakes the country.
After all, how could one possibly create a map when majority contains bodies of water, and barely any land to take mark of?
That is where our surveyor, Mika Schmidt comes to play.
He, as a front-line surveyor to the Knights of Favonius, has a long term dream to be an expert cartographer.
And what better way to prove his skills than to map a country considered impossible?
Sitting by the Marcotte Station, he lightly presses his graph onto the parchment, another piece underneath incase he makes a big enough to warrant a replacement.
He was tasked to create a map, one underwater and another above water. Whilst he had no clue what they would be used for, he had no qualms against it.
He did quite enjoy cartography after all.
"Hm… Marcotte Station's trail takes a 26° curve that leads over to the Fountain of Lucine… and then the Fountain of Lucine has 2 parallel 90° turns, one destroyed and another leading to…"
He pauses, looking up from his map to check around once he realized he was mumbling. Fortunately, only an old man was nearby, and he seemed to be quite amused.
"Oh- I- I'm sorry Sir. I hope I didn't disturb you." Mika stutters out, feeling flustered at possibly disturbing this man, who seemed to enjoy his time by the pond.
The old man huffed. "Please! It's no bother young man. Say, you're making a map, yes?"
He perks up. "Yes, indeed I am! I was tasked to map out the area and survey Fontaine for a while."
The old man sighs, before chuckling in amusement. "You're quite bold, young man. Fontaine is quite hard to map out after all, with the large bodies of water that takes up majority of your map."
Mika only grins shakily, eyebrows furrowed as a shaky breathe escapes his lungs. "Well… I do think that venturing deep into the water would be- terrible if trying to sketch out a map. But it's necessary. No matter how hard it is, just putting a bit of effort would allow you to at the very least get the general locations that may be of import." Mika explains.
"And- quite honestly I'm terrified of the ocean. I don't think I could continue swimming and diving for hours without going back up to the surface no matter how easy it may be for me to breathe underwater. But I'm also the surveyor so I should at the very least understand the locations we deal with as a team."
"It would be terrible of me to just- neglect my duty due to my fear of the deep and possibly put others in danger. They don't have my experience after all, and I know that they too wouldn't be able to handle the deep. Mondstadt never had such deep waters before so it's still new, but I'm sure I'll adapt!" he paused, before shrinking, catching himself.
"Sorry, was I rambling?"
The old man didn't stop his laugh, hand to his stomach as he wiped his tears. "You're a funny boy, but also a worry wart."
Mika smiles hesitantly, unsure if he were talking down to him or merely praising him.
"Well, you should get on with your map then, and be careful around the water." The old man warned.
"You can go ask one of the divers to join you underwater, though you should seal your parchment before diving anywhere. Wouldn't want your map to be ruined, do you?" The old man jested, to which Mika smiled in shyness and appreciation.
"Yes, thank you Sir! I'll do my best!"
(((♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡)))
Well.
He didn't… really do his best.
He had been taking a Fontaine Aircraft, finding it convenient when sketching out the general terrain shape before he adds any details…
When the aircraft suddenly started turning.
At first, he hadn't noticed, much too busy sketching the Beryl Region to notice the slow tipping of the ship.
Soon enough, he started to realize the tilted flooring.
"What the-?" He muttered in confusion, pulling away from the edge of the aircraft to look around the floor. He felt himself slowly slip, and so he unconsciously held onto a pole.
A large gust of wind suddenly came.
And the aircraft tipped over.
"Oh gosh-!" He yelped, hand gripping onto his items as he held onto one of the poles on the aircraft.
"No no no no no no no no no not now-!"
He tried his best to grip onto the metal pole, hoping that the aircraft would tilt back and this was just some false alarm.
Unfortunately, it didn't seem to be the case.
He slipped.
His eyes widened as he felt his body turn weightless, knowing that the height of the fall making the impact all the more painful.
He gasps right before he hits the water, map in hand as he feels himself submerged. His back ached, his ears popped, his eyes shut tightly as he threatened to get out.
Once in the water, his eyes opened, and his body was heavy. He couldn't help the panic that arose in his system when he felt himself sink deeper.
No no this can't be happening-! He thought, tears emitting his eyes as he tried to move his body.
But he was shocked and frozen due to the impact, not a single muscle cooperating with his body.
The fall had punched all the air out of his lungs, making him wheeze as he tries to breathe in.
To think that he would die, all because he dared to map a country of water.
He felt his vision start to blot, black dots fading in and our of his peripheral vision as his eyelids grew heavy.
"No- wait-!"
He couldn't do anything, body fully out of commission.
Before he fell unconscious, he caught sight of a person with a helmet. A diving helmet.
He couldn't help but reach out.
The person swam at him quickly, hand touching theirs right when he finally falls unconscious.
He couldn't help but wonder, ever so slightly.
Perhaps they wouldn't mind helping him map the underwater part of Fontaine?
♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤♡♤
He chokes, coughing as his body lurches. Now sitting upright, he spits out and coughs out water, body shaking as he greedily breathes in the air he used to take for granted.
After an experience like that, no person would take breathing for granted again. He thought bitterly, tears running down his cheeks as he wipes his mouth clean.
His eyes turn back to the person who had saved him, seeing them in the helmet and casual clothes.
Do all Fontainian's wear such casual clothing while diving? He wondered, but quickly shoved this thought aside.
"I… I thank you." He stammers, voice wispy and hoarse as he shakily smiles at the other. "I… I didn't think anyone would be able to help me-"
The other only nods, awkwardly standing up as they fiddled with their hands.
Mika guessed they didn't quite like speaking, so he didn't bother, checking his messenger bag. He couldn't help but groan, regretful and disappointed. "I lost my graphite… and the map." He mutters.
"The map." He shook when he heard the voice, turning to helmet wearing person, who awkwardly fiddled with their pockets, before pulling out parchment covered in… is that slime condensate?
"I… I wrapped it in slime condesate. To keep it... dry-ish before it got thoroughly soaked." The person spoke, coughing before offering it over to Mika. He hesitantly takes it, opening the rather slimy parchment, only to see the writings intact and- barely wet.
He couldn't help the smile that appeared on his face, turning to the helmet person with a smile. "Thank you-! I had- I thought I'd have to remake it, all this progress… Gosh, i-" he stumbled, standing up really quickly.
"Thank you, truly! I- I'm Mika Schmidt. A front-line surveyor for the Knights of Favonius!" He puts out his hand, eagerly waiting for a handshake.
The other freezes but hesitantly shakes his hand. "I… I'm Freminet. Professional diver."
While Mika was quite a shy person… well, Freminet did save him after all. I'm sure he had all the rights to try and befriend his savior.
"If you weren't there, I would've passed on! Please, allow me to treat you or something. I owe you my life." Mika pleaded, much to thankful that this random person had not only saved his life, but had saved his hard work.
Freminet awkwardly waves his hand. "Its fine, really. You don't- need to treat me to anything." He awkwardly stutters out.
Mika hums, eyebrows furrowed before sighing. "Ok, but-! If… if its no bother. If you don't mind…" he hesitated.
He wished to ask Freminet questions about the sea terrain of Fontaine, since the other was a diver after all.
But then again, the other had already saved his life.
It seems Freminet noticed his hesitation and cleared his throat. "You… you can ask me questions." He awkwardly allowed, to which Mika beamed, a hint of embarrassment on his face as he grabbed his surprisingly-dry notepad from his not-so-dry bag.
"Thank you…! I promise I won't take much of your time."
(((♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡)))
Mika seemed to be going back on his word often today, as he had somehow roped Freminet into a conversation for about 3-4 hours. The previously bright and cloudy now dim and dreary.
"So you're saying there are waterproof mechs that currently circulate around Fontaine's water terrain?" Mika asked in astonishment, as Freminet nodded energetically.
"Indeed. It was placed there to survey and patrol the waters. Specifically to search out, repel, and exterminate any life forms that may threaten any of the underwater equipment."
Freminet shrugs. "Fortunately, there are quite few of them, usually only hanging around underwater sites and underwater shipwrecks. So there is no need to worry about accidentally encountering them."
Only now did Mika notice that Freminet hadn't taken off his helmet throughout the 3-4 hours they had conversed. But it was… quite far into the conversation already, it'd be rude to ask for him to take it off.
Instead, he writes the information down, a smile on his face as he thinks of what he's learnt.
"Fascinating. Its absolutely admirable that Fontaine deploys such helpful mechanisms. Yet then again, it's Fontaine. The country is quite known for its innovation after all. Though, it makes me wonder if the mechas run on any type of energy that's particular only to Fontaine? It'd be quite useful if Inazuma would be able to harness it, able to warn ships if they are to head into electro-infused waters-"
He continued rambling on, thoughts pacing through several opportunities that underwater mechanisms could possibly help in achieving.
All the while Freminet watches Mika with amusement and fondness in his eyes. He fiddled with his helmet, not even noticing the small smile that had appeared on his face since he was interrogated by this… curious surveyor.
He's quite a chatty one, isn't he? He thought to himself, chuckling quietly.
He had actually been quite panicked earlier, when he had noticed Mika fall from the aircraft and sink down into the water. He never even thought he could swim that fast, until the adrenaline kicked in.
Although, he felt guilty.
What would've happened if he hadn't gotten there in time?
What if he was just a few seconds too late?
What would've happened to Mika?
He shook his head, rattling the helmet as he did. It was no use to dwell on what could've happened. For now, he was… just glad he was able to save the surveyor.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Did I ramble too much again?" Mika's regretful voice rung, snapping him out of his thought as he nervously laughed.
"Oh! No, sorry I was just surprised by how much you've considered." Freminet answered softly, as Mika smiles hesitantly. "I mean… I'm a surveyor, so I kinda need to take everything into account, especially if I want to make sure everyone in the team is safe…"
Mika pauses, eyes flickering to the sky before he stood up, shocked. "Oh goodness, I'm sorry, I must've taken up so much of your time."
Freminet clears his throat, hiding his involuntary giggle as he stood up as well, dusting off the sand that might've stuck onto his clothes.
"It's fine, really." Freminet says gently. "I didn't really have anything else to be doing anyway. And I quite enjoyed the conversation." Mika flustered, smiling with a chuckle.
"Then I hope it'll be alright if I were to seek you out again?" Mika asked, hope in his voice. Freminet paused, feeling his heart start to beat.
His palms turned sweaty, and he felt himself hesitant.
He… didn't find Mika's company terrible… but for someone to seek him out…
It was just…
He snapped out of his stupor, awkwardly answering. "Sure! I mean- sure. I don't- I don't mind. If- if you have any questions. I don't mind answering them."
Mika couldn't help the quiet laugh that bubbled out of his chest due to how Freminet reacted, but nodded.
"Then, thank you again for saving me and the map I had worked so hard on. I hope you get home safe."
Fremient nods stiffly. "You too. Uh… hope the- aircraft doesn't get tipped like before." He tried to jest, but the awkward delivery only made Mika giggle.
"I could only hope. It'd be a shame if I fell like that again." Mika sighed in helplessness.
On a sudden whim, Freminet spoke. "I… I'll try to catch you the next time you fall."
Silence overtook them, both parties equally shocked by the sudden comment.
Before Mika laughed, and Freminet placed a hand on his helmets screen.
"...forget I said anything please." Freminet pleaded, whilst Mika tried to silence himself.
"I'm sorry I just- pfft"
Mika's laugh was contagious, and Freminet found himself laughing along. His voice and laugh being just as distorted as his voice, which only made Mika laugh even harder.
"I- I'm sorry. That was rude." Mika finally found his composure, covering his mouth as he turns pink in shame.
"Its- its fine. I mean, it was kinda funny." Freminet rubs the back of his neck.
"Well… I don't mind if you catch me next time I fall." Mika replied, a soft smile on his face. "I mean, you've saved me once. I think I could at least guarantee that you'd save me again. Then, I'd owe you my life twice."
Freminet grunts in slight embarrassment. "I would save you regardless of you owing me."
Mika huffs in helplessness, shaking his head before waving. "Well, I'll be actually going now, Freminet. I'll see you when I see you."
Freminet waves hesitantly, watching as Mika turns his back and starts walking away.
And while usually Freminet wouldn't mind others not knowing his face…
He quickly took off the helmet, wiping his cheeks to hide his blush as he called out.
"Mika-!"
The surveyor paused, turning around in curiosity before his eyes widened in shock. He had accepted early into the conversation that Freminet was more comfortable with his helmet than without it.
But…
He didn't think Freminet was this handsome.
Mika felt his face turn red as Freminet smiled at him wonkily.
"Uh- don't hesitate to call me if you see me around the Court!" He said, voice raspy and shaking.
The Mondstadtian couldn't help the endeared smile that appeared on his own face. "Sure! I'll show you my maps once I'm done. You deserve to see what you've saved, after all."
And with that, Mika left.
With a semi red face and his bag clutched tight around him.
Whilst the entire Fontaine Aircraft was traumatizing…
"I'm sure Sir Varka wouldn't mind me asking for more parchment if a few more of them get wet.." He muttered, lips in a giddy smile as he ventured towards the large fossilized skull in the distance.
He got a friend out of it.
Perhaps water wasn't that bad after all.

OMEGA VALORANT AGENTS AND THEIR COMICS
In an effort to convince the public of the necessity of the Omega Protocol aka. Legion, the world governments on the other Earth commissioned a number of artists and writers to create propaganda pieces for the Omega Agents.  A few agents opted out or provided direct input as to what they wanted.
Tumblr media
“Threat in the Mirror” is by far one of the most famous copy of the Legion produced comics and most popular
A four part saga with the agents all starting out with fabricated origins to make them more like characters than they really were
Phoenix was literally a student but they wrote in that had powers since birth and was a vigilante in London
Skye was helping with environmental sciences as a surveyor but the comic changed it to her communing with nature itself in some kind of temple
Fictionalizing the lives of agents was part of the deal
The ‘Alpha threat’ is presented as Kingdom executives that cloned the agents and stole radianite to create doomsday weapons.  Not entirely true but not too wrong
The 1st part is them working together to beat some Kingdom grunts and getting enlisted and by the 3rd part they detonate a spike successfully at the end
They don’t show the after effects of the spikes at all, just showing them ‘absorbing the radianite in a harmless flash’
The epilogue is them gearing up for an all out assault on Kingdom HQ which hasn’t happened yet
A lot of crossover events in this comic between other previous issues of other comics
Tumblr media
Pure insanity with weird science and geek romance, this is the ultimate nerd comics with the strangest concepts ever
Microverses, aliens, mutant creatures, giant bugs, and all sorts of silver age comic weirdos are the typical threats but are often coupled with KJ and Raze’s relationship going through change
Yeah the shipping is ongoing but it's pretty uniform at this point, especially cause both Omega agents are engaged
There was an issue commemorating it, with them kissing on the cover
The ‘tentacled terrors’ in this copy were some kind of octopus alien thing that were created in some kind of experiment
They quickly became a popular symbol and to make some money off of the merchandising rights, the company manufactured plushes of them
The plushes serve as the Omega version of the squid plush Neon owns
Friendly Fire is full of romance tropes cranked to 11 because of the comic’s pulpy nature.  This extends to the side characters like Gekko, Neon, Jett, and Phoenix
Omega Yoru is included in the Japanese spin-off version, making those issues a collector’s item
In terms of propaganda, it functions ok by making the audience like the agents more and sympathize with them.  Most of it is made up but the KJ and Raze stuff is 100% true
Tumblr media
It's pretty much the Spawn comic but less edgy and more story driven and a little more toned down
The whole origin of Omen is unknown to everyone but the fans have speculated on what is canon or not
Viper’s involvement in his creation was understated in the comic as to maintain secrecy and keep herself from feeling too much guilt
Current story is that Omen was an scientist studying a ‘shadow world’ who had his experiment sabotaged that came back to avenge himself by attacking Kingdom and threats
Most stories are mostly an overpowered badass with issues massacring nameless soldiers and scaring the hell out of the villain of the week
Viper is sort of a confidant and source of advice in the comic, while Cypher is sort of the ‘guy in the chair’ for all of them
From time to time they focus in on Omen’s lack of mercy and loose connection to humanity, which forms most of the drama that keeps readers invested
When Fade allowed herself to be illustrated in the comic, it was an instant match made in heaven for her to be Omen’s sidekick
A bounty hunter was the perfect foil to someone who had lost all direction and needed help.  In the comics their powers come from the same accident
Overall it's a great antihero comic but the Omega Omen could not care less about it and neither does Fade
Tumblr media
The first draft of the Valorant Legion’s comics
It was created by a legend in the illustration community that used to make classic superhero comics.  The author was like a mixture of Ditko and Eisner in terms of comic genius
Propagandists working with the Legion had a meet and greet with many of the agents, and from then on the the author elected a few agents to follow
KJ was obvious as a protagonist, seeing as she had a relationship with Raze adding some motivation and she was young like the target audience
The bots and her technical genius were definitely an important choice because they could easily symbolize the efforts the governments made to protect people, especially places like Pearl
Brimstone being the good-cop leader was a choice made because of the fact Brim’s image was already iconic as a hardworking soldier and great leader
Viper was a foil to the group, which helped balance the complexity of the crew and added some variety to personality
Omega Viper was mostly indifferent to the author, but did want her comic version to exclude some of her background
She is usually the lancer of the group, and willing to do the more extreme things
Cypher was a hard character to introduce, his relaxed nature but sharp intellect made it difficult to decide if he should add more darkness or be more witty
It was settled that he’d be a clever wordsmith and the group’s heart to an extent, but the author left out the parts of Cypher’s life he’d rather keep quiet
He became one of those joke-like characters who are competent but get into funny situations.  One liner and wordplay king.
It’s played for laughs to cut dramatic tension but Cypher coming back from the dead is a common story beat if he disappears somehow.  Cypher keeps things upbeat
Omen is like the opposite of this idea.  He is the group’s strong, silent one who much is not known about
His origin is kept secret but it’s made clear he wants revenge on Alpha earth
What makes the character work well with the comic Protocol is the fact he serves as an outsider at times and lets other characters play off his condition
KJ as the newcomer, Viper as the lancer, Brim as the leader, Cypher as the heart, and Omen as the emotional core felt correct for a comic in the author’s eyes
With the team assembled, the comic launched with incredible success and totally hit with most teens and young kids
As more issues were printed, more characters like Raze, Sage, and Sova saw more appearances and got storylines
It was a hit to say the least
Tumblr media
This comic is part Captain America and part Suicide Squad, but the two protags also have a rivalry going on
Sova is a side character in this and gets a lot of fangirls much to Omega Sova’s annoyance
Breach and Brim are placed on missions to demolish terrorist groups and cybernetic armies.  They blow shit up and walk away like the A-Team in a lot of the stories
KJ and Raze are the tech people and there are often many panels dedicated to the badass inventions in action.  Lots of cool lasers and rockets
Playtime’s Over is a new issue that has them fighting against a newly formed militia that has allied with Alpha Earth and is using android soldiers to steal radianite
The leader of the group is a sort of like a doll maker, hence Playtime’s Over
It’s got Metal Gear inspired parts for certain, especially when Breach suplexes a mech and Brimstone uses stealth tactics by hiding in a box
The bickering the two have is fodder for the fans to create god knows how many rivals to lovers fics.  Omega Breach constantly teases Brimstone about this, much to his chagrin
It’s cheesy action and explosions with two badasses that one up each other, so it's not super well written in terms of plot but is beyond entertaining
Comic Headcanon at Alpha Valorant
After the siege on Pearl and any time after where they visited it, the younger agents would loot that one comic store
They were weirded out by the stories being of them at first, seeing media based on you is quite jarring
Eventually many of them started to read through the boxes that were brought back as ‘recon’
It’s become a ritual to sneak into the store and see what issues are available to take and who’s in what comic
It leads to so many in jokes
One right of passage new duelists have is finding their first appearance in the Legion comic book series

Adventure: A Wager Among the Waves
Never try to cheat a dragon, not only are they sore losers, whatever game you’re playing you’re playing it by their rules.
Hooks
Having traveled to Port Sweldin in order to catch a ship, the party get to enjoy a few days enjoying the picturesque beachtown while waiting for a vessel known to be traveling to their destination. Sweldin boasts of lively boardwalk amusements, charming market streets, and a thriving artist community that caters to both tourists and wealthy folk summering
All seems to be going well until early on the morning of their fourth day when the party assembles to see their ship come in only to watch as it suddenly begins to sink out in the harbor. Rescue boats are dispatched ( which the party may be pressganged into) but the effort is interrupted when a grey scaled dragon launches from the waters below and delivers an ultimatum to those gathered to watch the chaos:  His name is Xemplaris, and he is there to claim their shore by right of challenge as the town once challenged him long ago. Before he leaves, he claims that he will sink any ship he sees out on the water, throwing Sweldin into chaos and preventing the party from reaching their long sought destination.
No one has any idea how the port managed to anger a dragon, but when the party investigates a few miles up the shore they find that the chalenge they’re expected to meet him in is not combat, but an elaborate game. Xemplaris has smoothed out the beach and drawn in a grid, arranging his side of it with large stones and giant shells. Apparently he expects the party to source their own pieces before he tells them the rules, which will require them to go savaging above and below the tideline to find the assortment of oversized tokens needed to compete. The dragon will take great amusement in this, and may engage them in conversation as they thrash about in the surf. during which they may be able to piece together why the beast is doing all this beyond just draconic greed.
Setup: Several hundred years ago,  Beryl Sweldin was a dwarven huckster entrepreneur in search of his next con venture, after being chased out to the coast after his most recent scam enterprise went belly up. Born the son of an imperial scout and surveyor, Sweldin knew a good patch of land when he saw it, and stumbled across a stretch of shore that with a little dredging and other sorts of management would make a fine deepwater port. The only problem was that this stretch of land was inhabitted by a young dragon, who’d grown up alone among the dunes, lairing in the shell of some massive sea-beast that’d long ago died on the beach. Already large enough to pose a threat, Sweldin cozied up to the young Xemplaris, offering him shiny trinkets  to earn his trust and persuading the innocent creature that he was a friend. After that, the draogn was just another mark, and Sweldin was going to fleece him of everything he had.  Sweldin devised a game and taught it to the dragon, wagering coins and baubles along each match and instilling the young wyrm with an undersanding that games like these were binding and one must always abide by their outcome. Naturally Sweldin was cheating, adding more rules and complications to the game each time that the dragon could get caught up in.  After half a year of this grift, Seldin eventually tricked Xemplaris into wagering the entire beach and the giant shell which served as his home, and when the little dragon lost he went away weeping.
After that it was easy for Sweldin to bilk a few inverters into his new project, as deepwater ports were sure to be big business. His grand house still sits on a hill overlooking what he made, its floors and couryard tiled with fragments from a great leviathan’s shell hauled up from the shore.
The Shore game is played in an 8x8 grid, with players taking turns to deploy their pieces anywhere across the first three rows infront of them. The game is often played in sand, and while the grid should be as straight as possible the topography does not need to be even.
Pieces are as follows:
8 roundish stones, all the same color: the main playing piece of the game, these pieces can only be moved two squares at a time. They can also be “flicked” at another piece to remove it from play. If the stone lands its hit, the struck piece is removed and the stone stays in, taking the removed piece’s postion ,were as if flies off the board without making contact it is considered out. Xemplaris requires stones for his game to be large enough for HIM to flick, meaning that for the average humanoid they are improvised weapons with a range increment of 5/15
4 tall shells: These pieces serve as the primary goals of the game, with a player losing once all 4 of their shells have been knocked down. These Shells cannot be moved once placed, and after they fall, no piece can be placed on the spaces into 2 spaces into which they have fallen.  Xemplaris uses the figureheads of different ships he’s salvaged as his point counters, and is very proud of them.
2 Flat shells: These shells move like chess knights, leaping over other pieces. If they land on an enemy piece (including a tall shell) that piece is out, but if they land on a friendly stone, that stone is protected and cannot be taken if struck ( the flat shell needs to be struck first to remove it). Xemplaris uses giant chunks of coral for these pieces.
1 Stick: The stick is three grid spaces long can be placed wherever the owner wants it provided there is not another piece in the way, including digging it into the sand at an angle. The stick is not removed when it is struck by stones, and stones cannot be placed into spaces  the stick occupies ( though the flat shell can still remove it). Xemplaris uses an entire driftwood trunk as his stick.
2 Shiny tokens:  Not placed on the board, these tokens amount to an attempted “do over” allowing you to retake a shot or force an opponent to retake one of theirs. If the do-over is successful, the one who called for the do-over has to give the other player one of their tokens. Regardless of the outcome of the game, whoever’s holding the tokens keeps them after the game is over. Xemplaris’s tokens are a pair of shimmering gems, and expects the party to ante something equally valuable which may require them to haggle with a jewler back in port. The dragon will also allow one of the challengers to ante their eyes in place of tokens, taking vindictive pleasure in making them wager something precious to them.
The players take turns moving two of their pieces at a time, though only the roundish stones can be used twice in the same round ( first moving, then flicking). Play ends when one player has all their pointy shells knocked over, or when both players are out of stones to toss, in which case the player with the most pointy shells standing wins. in the event of a tie, the player with the most tokens wins, after which the game is a draw.
Further Adventures:
The world was not kind to Xemplaris after he was evicted, and for centuries the dragon has nursed a shameful sorrow that slowly transmuted into hate when he matured and realized the dwarf had cheated him. Deeply hurt and fixated on winning his home back, the dragon has spent years codifying Sweldin’s nonsense game into something he considers fair, subconsciously convinced that if he could beat the long dead huckster he could undo the hurt he suffered after losing his home and fending for himself in the wider world.  His wager is simple: if he loses, he won’t destroy the port in an act of draconic wrath. If he wins: The port is his, and everyone else needs to leave or risk being burned alive. Xemplaris sees this as justice for the exile he was forced to endure, nevermind how unbalanced the scales might be.
With his new found fortune, Sweldin married into the prosperous Stouthull clan, and used their combined influences over the newly forming town to invest heavily in shipping.  The vessel the party were set to sail on belonged to the Stouthulls, which gives Sweldin’s decendants a perfect excuse to aim the party at Xemplaris in order to buy time to rally their defences and secure their assets.  They knew the dragon was coming after all, Sweldin had told his children about the centuries long graceperiod he’d gotten the dragon to agree on before their next “rematch” and it was kept as family secret while they prepared various countermeasures.  The Stouthulls promise the party a fortune to just kill the dragon if they can, or delay long enough for them to ready wyrmkilling construct and enchanted balista they’d had prepared for just such an occasion.
If Xemplaris loses his game, he’ll fly into a rage, a half millennia of regret pouring through him and spurring him to rampage through town, tearing apart buildings desperate to find the shell that was once his only shelter. If the party can’t talk him down, they or the Stouthulls will have to kill him, being hailed for heroes in their part but always being haunted by the wyrm’s last words: “ It’s not fair, I just wanted my home back, It’s not fair, It’s not fair”
If the party do manage to talk Xemplaris down ( what port city wouldn’t want to have a draconic protector on the naval payroll?) and eventually return to Port Sweldin, they’ll find that the populace has gone a bit mad for the Shore Game, playing a table-sized version on the boardwalk and at the biweekly tournament hosted outside the dragon’s new beachside lair.   The heroes will of course have made an enemy of the Southull clan but honestly,   who’d pick a pack of greedy, murderous merchants over having a boardgame playing dragon friend?

See Strange New Worlds... And Be A Rescue Ranger
So there you are, on the base ship, minding your own business, and you get a an unknown broadcast. It's a loop of something nobody can understand, followed by a tone pattern.
Could be anything. Probe, surveyor satelite, signal beacon that's not compliant with local standards.
But then the assigned Human, who's there to pick stuff up and do Human related things, gets all twitchy, which is never a good sign.
"What if it's a distress call?" They say.
Well so what, what if it is? They should use the standard format. What if it's Thotari assassins? What if it's just a bit of space junk that's been drifting around for the last few Millenia?
But the Human's got all the telescopes - Visial, Radio, Wuth Effect and Gravitic pointed out that way. And now they're convinced there's something up.
And before you can sit down, convene committee and discuss this, CC the agenda to Dr. Kraant and log it all, the crazy human has undocked the cargo manipulator pod, re-named it the Carpathia for inexplicable reasons.
Worse, they overclock the engine. That little cargo hauler should reasonably take 15 Time Units, around 18 human hours to intercept, but at that speed they'll be there in 7.
Clearly Humans cannot be trusted with tech. The wear on the engines will cause the maintainance schedule to be brought forward by months!
You bring this to your supervisor, one of the annoyingly laid back Tsin.
They ask you what the human said and you play them the recording:
Human: Somewhere out there, someone's hurting. Carpathia out.
"Oh" says the manager, "That makes sense."
So you take it to their manager, that big Atrix, who surely is more sensible and she calls the human up:
Atrix: Did you really steal the cargo hauler.
Human: Yes.
Atrix: Because...?
Human: I think that's a distress call.
Atrix: And you overclocked the engines?
Human: Yes.
Atrix: How fast are you getting that thing moving?
Human: 212 vu per second.
Atrix: Huh I think that might be a record. Look, crank it down and run the Nitrogen tanks through the coolant manifold... About 23 pu will do it and you should be able to brake harder. Up to 1.2 gu
Human: Earth is 1.4 gu. I can go up to uhhh 4.
Atrix: ... I'm not sure that tug can take that! Wow! 4? Comfortably?!
Clearly they're all in on this crazy off-the books stuff.
At least it wasn't the Thotari. Some species nobody ever heard of with some weird take on point to point drive that blew enough hard radiation through the front of the ship when they braked out of superluminal space that it pretty much turned the hull to metal vapor, and now everyone has to learn about a whole new species who will argue that their way of doing things that aren't in the regulations is OK for them.
This is why you don't go running off to save people! Think of the PAPERWORK!
---
Author's note
When the Titanic finally sent up flares and radio'd for rescue, The Carpathia was the only ship that actually went to help.
The crew and passengers just went from 0 to Maximum Rescue instantly, and moved the entire ship to the site of the Titanic pretty much faster than technically was possible. They moved hundreds of thousands of tonnes of steel and wood, pretty much out of sheer spite because reality told them they couldn't do that.

Hamlet in the South Georgia Island, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
Grytviken is a hamlet on South Georgia in the South Atlantic and formerly a whaling station and the largest settlement on the island. It is located at the head of King Edward Cove within the larger Cumberland East Bay, considered the best harbour on the island. The location's name, meaning "pot bay", was coined in 1902 by the Swedish Antarctic Expedition and documented by the surveyor Johan Gunnar Andersson, after the expedition found old English try pots used to render seal oil at the site. Settlement was re-established on 16 November 1904 by Norwegian Antarctic explorer Carl Anton Larsen on the long-used site of former whaling settlements

Along with the surrounding area, the station has been declared an Area of Special Tourist Interest (ASTI).
Grytviken is a popular stop for cruise ships visiting Antarctica, and tourists usually land to visit Shackleton's grave. The South Georgia Museum is housed in the manager's house of the former whaling station, and is open during the summer tourist season.
The station's church is the only building which retains its original purpose; it is still used occasionally for services. There have been several marriages in Grytviken, the first being registered on 24 February 1932, between A.G.N. Jones and Vera Riches.
On 28 January 2007, a service was conducted in remembrance of Anders Hansen (a Norwegian whaler buried at Grytviken Cemetery in 1943) and to celebrate his great-great-grandson Axel Wattø Eide's baptism occurring in Oslo the same day.
