*Long post ahead*
Okay, I’m going to go out on a limb here and just say that Byler will happen--if not in volume 2, then most definitely in season 5. I’ve been lurking in this tag for some time, specifically ever since volume one dropped, and I have seen the endless essays of pessimism and doubt that’s been bogging people down. While I share your guys’ doubts to an extent, I can’t fully bring myself to accept that Byler won’t come to fruition this season or the next. I hope my little tangent will provide you with at least some reassurance, because to be honest I’m searching for as much as I can before our hopes are either fulfilled or brutally crushed in t-minus 23 days. I’d like to preface this with saying that character/ship analysis posts are not my area of expertise, but I’ll give it the good old college try.
Alright-y. So. Season 4. There’s a lot to cover character-wise, but let’s just go right ahead and jump into the meat and potatoes of it, starting off with the dichotomy that is Mike Wheeler. According to Finn, Mike is trying to figure himself out this season, and, as we the audience know, he’s very kind of oblivious when it comes to his and other people’s feelings, and Finn also said Mike was a bit clueless. Up until this point, it seems that Mike’s character arc (vis-à-vis his relationship to El) has been flat and banal. They’re in a precarious place in their relationship right now; a fragile place. Having Mike and El repeat the same break-up-and-make-up storyline from last season is bland, and I don’t exactly see the Duffer brothers going in that direction again because it’s cheap and quite frankly a let down. This is where Byler comes into the mix. Despite the potential backlash it might face--having two main characters in a gay relationship in such a massive franchise--I do believe that it is in no way contrived, regardless of what some vociferous shippers might claim. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. The foundation for Byler has been laid since the very beginning, and if you rewatch the previous seasons you can see the evidence if you make a conscious effort to. Especially on Will’s side. And if you take into consideration the sudden wave of Byler content being churned out by Netflix social media accounts and the actors themselves (looking at you, Noah Schnapp), it becomes increasingly apparent that they are trying to warm the general audience up to the idea of Byler. Hell, I’m convinced Noah and Finn have had barely any press together because they’d be giggling and twirling their hair if the ship was so much as mentioned. Either this is some elaborate queer-baiting scheme (during pride month, too), or we’re genuinely getting Byler. But I digress. What I find particularly interesting, and what really has me convinced of the ship happening, is the amount of heart-to-hearts Byler share this season. The bedroom talk, the talk on top of the car, (and the leaked talk in Hopper’s cabin). Those talks feel emotional. Special. It feels like the dynamic of their relationship is beginning to shift, and what that entails has yet to be clarified until volume two comes out (get it? ha). It feels like it’s all building up to something, like a big reveal. But we’ll see when we get there. For now, I’ll just let the open closets next to Mike Wheeler speak for themselves.
Before going any further into my excessively long post, let’s touch more on Mil*ven. A wedge has been intentionally driven between Mike and El for the second time. It’s undeniable to shippers on both sides, although the explanations for why begin to differ from there. Mil*ven’s relationship has been somewhat tenuous this season, and arguably it was tenuous in season 3 as well. It’s a dying flame that both Mike and El are trying to rekindle, with El seemingly putting forth more effort into salvaging it than Mike. Calling into question the integrity of Mil*ven for a second time seems odd to me, unless it’s going somewhere we least expect it. Now I’ve seen speculations floating around about how Mike can’t say ‘I love you’ back because of his parents’ inability to properly show love to one another, and while I sort of buy into that I think that there’s a deeper, less-superficial spin to his reluctance to say those three words, let alone write them to his girlfriend. Throughout this season, Mike has felt suspiciously off-kilter. Odd. Sure, he’s lovey-dovey with El when they reunite at the airport, and a little bit during their time at the rollerskating rink--but then the fiasco with Angela goes down, and this is where it takes a sharp nose-dive south. Mike makes an insensitive comment during dinner about the ordeal, which hurts El who abruptly leaves the room. Later on they have their argument, and El brings up the elephant in the room: Mike’s refusal to say ‘I love you.’ Rather than say it back to her, he gives her empty answer after empty answer. Answers she doesn’t believe. He even calls her ridiculous for raising valid concerns she has, and he gets defensive. Comparing this scene and the scene with Will and Mike in the bedroom, you can see the difference in Mike’s body language and his delivery clear as day. But where did his refusal to say/write ‘I love you’ come from? This passive, aloof attitude toward their relationship? If I had to wager a guess, it’s Mike unknowingly facing identity issues. He’s conflicted, and he’s confused. His awkward exchange with Will at the airport--a far cry from their farewell hug just a few months prior. His insistence that Will and him are just friends. Friends. His curiosity and reaction to Will’s painting. Mike loves El, there is absolutely no doubt about it. Whether it is romantic or platonic is the million dollar question, and I’m leaning towards the latter. Let me say that platonic relationships are in no way beneath romantic relationships, and a lot of times they are even stronger and run viscerally deeper. For Mike and El, they started dating at a young age before they could really, truly discover themselves and what they want. They dove into it head-first; two kids head over heels for each other--the girl with superpowers and the boy who saved her. They were perfect for each other; they’ve been through hell and back together, and share a trauma bond. But as time goes on, Mike starts to slowly realize that his feelings for El have been misconstrued all along. Being Mike, he’s too damn dense to reflect on himself and continues acting as if everything is fine when in reality it’s far from it. This sounds an awful lot like someone who is struggling with newfound feelings and trying to push them down to maintain a semblance of normalcy in a life that’s been extremely hectic and traumatic.
Point of the matter is, there is a method to the Duffer brothers’ madness. Everything they do in this show is tastefully methodical and so well thought-out to the minutest detail. They planned this story since the very beginning. I seriously doubt they will pursue such a pivotal plot point only to later discard it, especially since it could benefit all three characters’ arcs in a unique way. I think they’re definitely building up to Will’s confessing to Mike, and I have a book of theories centered around that that I will keep to myself for brevity’s sake. In short: have a little more faith in this ship. You’re not delusional, and you’re not over-analyzing. You’re observing things that are supposed to be observed, and drawing conclusions that need to be drawn. I will gladly eat crow if I’m wrong, but something tells me I’m far from it.

Twenty Questions: Writer’s Edition
I saw @mtk4fun do this and I wanted to give it a go :)
How many works do you have on Ao3?
Fifteen.
What’s your total Ao3 word count?
27,716.
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
The Hunger Games (books)
Harry Potter (books)
Stranger Things
It (book, miniseries, movies)
What are your top five fics by kudos?
Everything for You
#RichieTozierIsOverParty
You Put Your Arms Around Me & I’m Home
Hold Me Close
To See You Alive
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
I try to always respond to comments. Because my audience is very small, I want to further connect with them as a way of thanking them for supporting me.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
In Wrong Place, Wrong Time when Richie gets kicked out of Beverly’s hospital room for making crude jokes. #justiceforrichie
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
I tend to try and end my stories on a moment of peace since things are usually so rough until that point.
Do you write crossovers? If yes, what’s the craziest thing you’ve written?
I’ve written two crossovers. One has been deleted since 2015 and the other was abandoned in 2017 and never published. They were both batshit though.
The first was a Harry Potter and Hunger Games crossover where a magical accident transports the Golden Trio to District Twelve. I don’t remember many other details, since I didn’t plan my stories back then, but I do remember Hermione telling Katniss and Gale that she and the boys were members of the Peace Corps and they’d been sent to Panem in order to help with the poverty.
The second was an It and Stranger Things crossover where I tried to combine the concepts of both the Upside Down and It in order to create an even more encompassing metaphor for child abuse. It took place in Hawkins in the 1980s. Richie and Mike Wheeler were identical twins and the brothers of Nancy and Holly. Beverly and Max were sisters and their mother was married to Mr. Hargrove. Joyce and Hopper were married. Sarah was alive and she and El were half-sisters from Hopper’s previous relationships in Chicago. El’s full name was Eleanora-Jane. She lived with Hopper because her mother was unstable. Jonathan and Will were still members of the family. Joyce and Hopper had a daughter together. I was still deciding on whether their toddler’s name would be Gail or Bridget/“Birdie.” I’m still actually quite invested in this idea and I had around forty pages written by the time I abandoned it. Who knows, maybe it’ll get a revamp someday.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
No, thank God. My writing is the one instance where I would take hate seriously. If you want to tell me to kill myself, please do it on her <3
Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I wrote some Pennywise x Reader satire smut in 2018 and I still think that it’s hilarious. When it comes to serious sexual plot points, I just fade to black.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
No, not to my knowledge.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! To See You Alive was translated to Russian in 2018 and is available on Ao3, ff.net, and a Russian fic website.
Have you ever cowritten a fic?
Yes! @bloodyknuckles, @edgelordtozier, and I wrote a satirical multimedia form It fic and I’m still quite proud of it.
What’s your all time favorite ship?
Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are soulmates. I’ve been obsessed with them since I was nine years old. I’m still obsessed with them. They,,,
What’s a WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I write slow as fuck, so let’s try and avoid pessimism like this lmao. Don’t want to accidentally cause a self-fulfilling prophecy.
What’re your writing strengths?
I love a good description, whether it be of a character, setting, etc. I’ve been getting compliments on my characterization for as long as I’ve been publishing fic, so I also pride myself in that.
What’re your writing weaknesses?
My slow pace always has and probably always will bother me. This isn’t just a writing issue but I am a pretty extreme perfectionist. If I don’t like one thing, I’ll delete and rewrite the whole chapter several times. I just be in my own head fighting for my life sometimes.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in fic?
I’m all for writing multilingual dialogue in fanfiction, as long as the writers listen to multilingual people and try to write the dialogue accordingly based off others’ accounts. Cultural context is also something I think we should all work a little harder to understand. It’s all very interesting but fucking it up can be very harmful to actual multilingual people, so just make sure it all makes sense within the context of your writing.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
The Hunger Games!
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
The coauthored fic I mentioned above will always have a special place in my heart.
I’m tagging @bloodyknuckles @edgelordtozier @jlalafics and whoever else wants to do this!

Trahearne x F!Commander
(Ao3) Ch 2 / ? - It is the eve of the Pact’s final assault against Zhaitan. A morning unlike any other awaited them all and unspoken truths must be shared before it is too late. Marshal Trahearne and Commander Rhea struggle to reconcile with the meaning of their friendship as they realize they might never see each other ever again.
---
Commander Rhea couldn’t tell how long she had been staring at the starlit sky. Once again, her thoughts drifted towards the person she considered her closest friend.
Upon leaving the briefing room, General Soulkeeper had mentioned she had further meetings to attend to with the Marshal and the rest of the Pact’s administrative leadership, despite the already late hour.
He must be so tired, she thought.
Growing weary of her own fatigue, Rhea shook herself out of her reverie and refocused on the task at hand. She leaned forward and scribbled away:
  Dear Marshal,
Rhea paused, her quill tip lingering over the parchment.
So formal. This won’t do,  She thought. Not for something like this. She crumpled the sheet and threw it aside, before pulling another from the corner of her work desk.
The room was nearly pitch black, if not for the lit candle that stood by her writing materials, and the moonlight peering through her window. She leaned back in her chair and let her gaze drift over the ocean’s horizon for the umpteenth time as if it would offer a final boon of inspiration.
As what may be expected in an old, dilapidated fort quickly made over into a fully functional military stronghold in a matter of mere months, the furnishings of her room were simple and modest. Nonetheless, as a reflection of her rank, she was afforded a room with a generous amount of space and windows that overlooked the rest of Fort Trinity and the shorelines of Terzetto Bay.
Now and then, she can hear a pack of soldiers shuffling past her doors with equipment, and the echoes of hammering steel ring outside her windows. The hour was late, but there was always more to do. Especially when a morning unlike any other awaited them all.
An hour prior, she and the rest of Destiny’s Edge had broken from their exhaustive day-long intelligence briefings and strategic overviews. Everyone involved in the frontal assault was ordered to return to their quarters and get as much shut-eye as possible. There wasn’t much time left and so much was at stake.
However, Rhea could not sleep just yet. As was the case for many soldiers this solemn night, there was unfinished business to tend to. There were farewells to be made. Lifetimes of meanings needed to be truncated to brief letters for loved ones that many may not ever see again.
Rhea leaned back further and rubbed her temples. She was used to risking her life every day, but there was no question that tomorrow will be unlike anything she has ever faced before. How do you kill an Elder Dragon? No less one who has managed to upheave an entire lost civilization?
This time, she and her comrades may truly die a horrible, permanent death. The idea of never seeing her friends and family again never quite struck her the way it did now. Everything she worked towards and bled for would come to a bitter end. All of her hopes for the future would be snuffed out like a candle. She felt as though she dangled over an endless precipe, held by nothing but a thin thread, and the anxiety made her heart ache and stomach churn nonstop. It was debilitating.
Rhea shook it off and returned her attention to the blank parchment. All that remained to do now was say goodbye to him. Thinking about what to say was numbing. After all, how do you say farewell to someone who might not be able to understand what he means to you?
Not only was he her superior officer and the leader of a massive armada that the survival of the entire world depended on, but he is not even human! Even better, he was the first of his other-worldly kind. Everything about his identity was the substance of pure legend. How do you confess something so horribly vulnerable to someone of such incredible, almost supernatural importance? Why risk such painful embarrassment?
Because he’s my best friend, Rhea thought.
And I might never see him again.
This was the one fact that brought Rhea peace of mind in the storm of her emotions. It took her a painfully long time to accept the truth.
In these past few weeks, it nearly drove her mad to not come to terms with what she was feeling. She thought of him day and night. What was he up to? Is he holding up well? Or is he overburdened, from being buried neck-deep in paperwork, logistics, and the emotional trauma of being responsible for the deaths of countless brave souls, young and old? Even worse, was there someone or something making another attempt on his life, whilst she is unable to shield him from danger?
Her juvenile instincts often fantasized of an alternate universe where there were no Elder Dragons to kill, no Pact to lead, no other-worldly dangers to run from or into. It would be just the two of them, perhaps strolling along the roaming green hills of Kessex as they muse about history, literature, or the humble and charming livelihoods of the farmers they pass by.
Or perhaps they would walk beneath the lush canopies of Caledon, where she could learn more about the wondrous idiosyncrasies of his people and admire the boundless potential of the Sylvaris’ future.
Rhea realized that she ached for such fantasies because no matter the danger that surrounded them, every moment spent in his company made her feel... warm. Safe. Happy. When was the last time she had such a reliable source of pure contentment? If ever? She thought life would forever be an uphill battle for acceptance, belonging, and survival. But it all became so small when she was at his side. With him, she was enough. If not more.
Of course, however, they would never have crossed paths had there been no Zhaitan, or armies of Risen or the impending doom of the world. Thus, here they are, a sunrise away from facing their ultimatum, and she, Commander Rhea Hanaku, must confess she is hopelessly in love with Marshal Trahearne.
She continued.
  Trahearne, my dear friend,
It should be without surprise that I consider you my closest companion. My firmest ally. After everything we have endured together over the past year, you would probably agree when I say there are no words that can complement the significance of our friendship.
As usual, your confidence in me is overwhelming, and you assure me that we will certainly see each other again on the other side of this upcoming battle. And as usual, my pessimism has compelled me to overcompensate in light of the worst.
Rhea's lips curled to a small smile. The sentiment took her back to what felt like an ancient memory.
“You seemed to have known each other well,” Rhea said quietly, her eyes glumly fixed on the dark waters and misty horizon that surrounded their ship.
“We did,” Trahearne replied with a gentle smile. “I’ve counseled the Vigil on many of their campaigns against the Risen. As you might expect, Forgal was often the point-person for those initiatives. We had spent countless missions with our backs against each other. And, well,” he cleared his throat, “countless celebratory drinks at many-a-tavern. As many times Forgal has saved my life, there were just as many times he threatened it with one too many pints.”
Rhea’s eyes lit up towards Trahearne, and she surprised herself with the light laughter that escaped her lips. “You and me both,” she said with a small smile. Her eyes studied the sylvari before her. Despite the poise in Trahearne’s composure and the graciousness of his smile, she could sense a deep sadness in the golden glow of his eyes.
Forgal had always complained that ever since his “old age”, he only bothered fraternizing with those he held in high regard. After all she had witnessed from Firstborn Trahearne in the few hours they’ve known each other, it wasn't hard to tell why this sylvari fell in that category. The thought of her mentor made her eyes water once more. Rhea turned away quickly.
“I’m so sorry, Rhea,” Trahearne said softly. “I can tell you two were close, as well.”
Rhea stared back at him. The sadness he shared with her and the concern he expressed made Rhea feel closer to the sylvari. For the first time since they embarked on this forlorn voyage, she felt warmth creep back into her chest.
“You know what hurts the most?” Rhea whispered,  as she couldn’t help but give in to the sincerity in his eyes. “He always said that I was the kid he should have had.” It took everything she had to gulp back her emotions. Countless memories of laughter and heart-to-hearts with her mentor rushed through her. Countless memories that gave her hope for a future that she could be proud of. They were the kind of memories she never had with her own parents despite the many years she spent under their cold gilded rooftops. “I thought he was just joking. But I wish I could've told him... I wanted to tell him, he was the family I wish I had, too.”
She was undone. The truth of what she had lost today dropped on her like a torrential downpour. Her tears followed suit. For some reason, she wasn’t surprised when she felt the sylvari gently wrap her arms around her in a comforting embrace.
“Forgal never needed formalities to know the truth,” Trahearne said quietly. “In all the years I've known Forgal, I've never seen him look upon someone with as much pride as I did today. He understood what he meant to you, Rhea. That is why he made the choice he made today." The low timbre of his voice sent a soothing pulse to her senses.
Rhea’s breathing slowed, finding comfort in his words. Trahearne slowly withdrew so he could look her in the eye, “He knew what you were capable of. And I saw that with my own eyes today. His sacrifice will never be in vain because of you. I believe that wholeheartedly.”
At that moment, she was dumbstruck. Rhea could not understand the intimidation the Lionguard soldiers at Claw Island felt in Trahearne's presence. All she could see before her was a sylvari with a world of kindness and mature understanding in his eyes. It was the kind of deep, soothing warmth one found in a finely aged wine - a sweetness tempered by the mellowed nature only earned by years and years grounded in earth. His sharp, strangely handsome features suddenly appeared all the more gentle and noble. He was stunning.
Rhea continued to write. The memory reminded her of how much Trahearne inspired her to confide in him. At the end of the day, he was her friend first and foremost. What was the worst that could happen...?
Please allow me once more to overcompensate for my pessimism. Please allow me to prepare for the possibility that this is my last chance to speak to you truthfully.
There is a confession in this letter that I’m afraid you won’t be prepared for, Trahearne. My heart is hurting from simply writing this. My heart hurts every time I think of you.
Forgive me, my friend, but I'm afraid I love you.

Other Shades Of Happiness - A multi-ship Last Hours fanfic.
This is my return from a writing slump so yeah it'll probably need improvements but here it is.
---------------------------------------------------
“Come on now Lucie!” Matthew called, his cheeks pink with cold and happiness. It was a crisp November day, and soft thick snow fell from the sky, painting a scene as picturesque as a postcard. Due to the nature of the weather, the group had decided to give ice skating a shot. So now, here they were. Lucie leaped out onto the ice, wobbled, and then gained her footing, pride lighting up her face. Catching Matthew’s hand in her own, she grinned and began skating around the outdoor London ice rink. Matthew then slowed to a stop, and Lucie tightened her grip on Matthew’s gloved hand. Twirling, radiating with happiness and warmth, despite the chilly weather, Lucie’s face was as bright as the sun. “You are an excellent skater, Matthew.” Lucie said, a small smirk gracing her face. “What can I say? I am a man of many talents, and ice skating just happens to be one of them.” Matthew replied, picking up Lucie and twirling her in the air, her shout of joy and exhilaration more revitalizing to him then a cold glass of water and a meal after a long day.
James, Cordelia, Anna, Thomas, and Christopher cheered from the benches they were sitting on, the whole group preparing to stand up and skate themselves. Cordelia smiled softly at the sight of her parabatai’s happiness, with James hugging her close to cherish her cheerfulness in the depths of his heart. Christopher eagerly took down notes of the weather to serve in a future project, while Anna wore that private smile of hers, reveling in the simple calm of the moment. It was a much-needed break from the crazy of the real world. Nobody there had patrol that day, and it was like a fairytale - snow and laughter and spicy cider, warm feelings to burn away the chill. No threats bore down upon them, Anna thought. For once, there was no pressure, no blood or harsh breathing or death.
Ariadne and Alastair were on their way to join the group, arriving a little bit later with food and extra mittens. “Come on everybody! You simply must join us!” Matthew called from the middle of the rink a split second before Lucie tackled him to the ground, messing up his hair with kisses. The group stood, stretching their legs and gazing with exasperation at Matthew and Lucie. “It appears there is no stopping them.” Thomas said quietly, laughter filling his voice. Matthew whirled then, pulling Lucie down on top of him and playfully yanking a strand of her hair. She shrieked, and thus the fight began. Matthew stood up and bolted across the ice with Lucie in close pursuit, calling out "You won't get away with this Matthew!". "I have no doubt about it!" he shouted back, and then sped up to hide the smile on his face.
“We should most likely go join in, you know, before one of them murders the other.” Anna suggested, gracefully making her way onto the rink. James sighed, offered his hand to Cordelia, and proceeded to escort her onto the rink. Cordelia spun eagerly, and James gazed at her as if she were the stars and the moon. Christopher sat back down and opened his notebook. “I think I will stay behind and take down some more data. I’ll join later!” Christopher called, already looking around and dashing down words and numbers. Thomas everyone with the newly arrived Ariadne and Alastair. The pair waved happily, holding high the bags and cups they had brought with them. The group converged, claiming the comforting drinks and delicious food and shedding their wet scarves for new ones. “Thank you guys! It’s very appreciated.” Matthew said, gratitude filling his eyes. “Yes. Especially since I don’t know if Lucie could survive much longer without sustenance.” Cordelia replied, mischief glinting in her eyes as Lucie made an offended sound and replied with “Hey! I was doing just fine thank you very much!”
Anna lightly skated to meet Ariadne, taking her by the hand and smiling hesitantly. Ariadne returned the face, and the pair skated off together, happy and in love in their own little bubble. Alastair’s face was fixed in it’s permanent slight shade of pessimism, mixed with amusement at the antics he was witness to. His face brightened however when Thomas arrived beside him, grin on face and hand outstretched. The couples fell into a loose rhythm, drawing flowers and hearts on the ice with their skates. Cordelia and James, Anna and Ariadne, Matthew and Lucie, Thomas and Alastair… each in their own little crystalline bubble of stolen happiness. Christopher smiled from the side, content to talk to his friends and for them to be happy as he planned his next experiment. Their laughter and their chatter echoed to the sky, intermingling with the other shades of happiness there that day.

You know, if we’re throwing blame around, why isn’t Clover himself responsible for his own death? He isn’t Ironwood’s brainless puppet, he made his own choices that night. And honestly he’s the one who kept STOPPING QROW FROM ATTACKING TYRIAN. Like, Qrow and Robyn played their part in this mess, too. That’s for sure. But Clover set himself up in the end
I’m going to answer this one in as much detail as I can and then save it to my meta page so I can actually return to it when needed, because I think the fandom as a whole has really misinterpreted that fight based on the circulation of leading statements like “stopped Qrow from attacking Tyrian” and “set himself up.” Which isn’t a knock against you, anon. These are claims I’ve seen circulated for months now but (like everything!) they can’t be removed from their context.
So what actually happens during that fight?
What happens is that Qrow starts out in a level-headed and mature place. Despite being pissed at Ironwood and having no desire to be arrested, he verbally tries to keep a fight from starting.
Tumblr media
Clover, to my mind, also starts out in a level-headed and mature place. I get that the fandom doesn’t like the arrest warrant... but it is justifiable. Team RWBY was given official huntsmen licenses. They were working under Ironwood. They did lie to him and betray him. They did stand against and threaten to attack their general. Clover is a leader responsible for following the orders he’s given. Which I get is another hot-button phrase on tumblr. Only “bootlickers” just “follow orders,” but the fact remains that Clover doesn’t even know about any of the ethically complex details of this situation. All he knows is that his general and kingdom leader has ordered the arrest of the teens he was helping to train, along with their uncle. He doesn’t understand how that may or may not fit into the five second info dump said teen gave over their comms. Something something martial law and Salem’s coming. There’s no reason why he would forsake his loyalty to Ironwood as well as his duties here. Clover has no reason to prioritize Qrow’s ‘But I don’t want to be arrested’ over years of trust in Ironwood and his pride as leader of the Ace Ops. Besides, who wants to be arrested? His job isn’t to listen to every potential criminal who says they’re innocent because, you know, they’d all say that. His job is to bring them in and let the justice system decide that for him.
In terms of “setting himself up,” all Clover did was begin a legal process that he was justified and responsible for starting. That’s it.
Qrow, at the start, recognizes this to an extent. He’s hurt that Clover wouldn’t drop all these other parts of his identity to just let him go, but he’s not willing to physically fight him over it at first.
As said though, “at first.” The second Robyn attacks Clover? Qrow is on board.
Tumblr media
So does he go after the seething bandit who shot an arrow at Clover’s face despite him insisting that there was no reason to fight? Maybe so that once the powder-keg that is Robyn Hill is out of the way he and Clover might talk like Qrow had originally hoped?
Nope. He attacks Clover.

That’s really, really important because from here on out Qrow has established himself as Clover’s enemy. As far as Clover knows he can’t trust Qrow as an ally anymore. Robyn attacked him. Qrow assisted her. Tyrian is a crazy serial killer. Clover is on his own here.
Despite this, twice Clover tries to talk to Qrow. Twice Qrow refuses to back down. The first time is on the ship right after Qrow slashes at Clover.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Qrow might say it doesn’t have to come to this but his words are absolutely meaningless because he’s still attacking. What is Clover supposed to do here? Not defend himself? Qrow doesn’t get to say a version of ‘We don’t have to fight’ seconds after he attacked Clover entirely unprompted. For the record, this is the exact same thing Ruby did to Harriet. She insisted they didn’t have to fight immediately after slamming through two steel doors to start a fight with Harriet. The way RT writes its heroes is by having them say a fight isn’t necessary while simultaneously having them instigate that fight themselves. And of course, it’s only unnecessary provided the other party does exactly what they want. Ruby will only back off if the Ace Ops let them go. Same here: Qrow will only stop attacking if Clover agrees to forsake his orders and let Qrow go, on top of ignoring Robyn’s attacks against him.
The team-up between Robyn and Qrow is re-emphasized with her line, “You can hug it out once we’ve taken him down!”
Tumblr media
Again, Qrow is Clover’s enemy here. He attacked him first. He continued that attack. He stood beside Robyn and allowed her to speak for them both about “taking him down.” When it comes to the fight against Tyrian, Clover is attacking both of them because both have proven themselves to be threats. He’s not stopping Qrow from attacking Tyrian because he wants to save the serial killer or something equally ridiculous. He’s making use of openings in a fight where he’s outmatched two to one.
Before that though, we see the second time that Clover tries to diffuse the situation. After Tyrian gets free and crashes the ship, Clover approaches and tells Qrow that they can get Robyn help if he surrenders. That’s a fact. If you stop attacking me we can get her the medical attention she needs that much faster. Qrow interprets this as “manipulation.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His immovable stance that he cannot and will not be arrested has justified everything else in his mind (despite arrest being the easiest and currently only way to talk to Ironwood like he wants...) To Qrow, a potential arrest is so horrific that it warrants him attacking Clover. Clover wants to peacefully take Qrow back to Atlas and hold him somewhere until they can work out whatever is going on. Qrow wants to attack Clover until he is defenseless and then he can... what? Leave him in the deadly cold? Take on the serial killer alone that he couldn’t handle less than a year ago? Somehow get medical attention for Robyn even though he’s a wanted man? Their motivations here are in no way equal. Clover is being fair within the bounds of his laws. Qrow is being a chaotic mess that’s (shock) going to get someone killed.
This is reinforced when Clover insists that they don’t have to fight. Here, unlike when Qrow says it, his words mean something because Clover is not attacking him. He’s actually giving Qrow the chance to lower his own weapon and end this. Qrow responds emotionally, insisting that they’re not friends and “this is how it always ends.” Qrow has allowed his self-hatred, pessimism, and depression to blind him here. He literally has someone going, ‘There’s a better option where we both come out happier’ and he goes, ‘NOPE it can only end in tragedy.’ That’s been his experience and thus that’s what he insists on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Qrow rejects the possibility of peace between them even though it’s being offered, right here, right now. He established himself as Clover’s enemy by attacking him first and he then re-affirms that position by insisting that they can only cross weapons. Qrow is Clover’s bad guy now. He insists on trying to hurt him. So Clover is going to defend himself any way he can. That means that when Tyrian arrives and Qrow turns to attack him, Clover makes use of his unguarded back and snags him with his hook. Why wouldn’t he? Why would he suddenly think, ‘Oh, Qrow is on my side again and we’re teaming up to take out Tyrian’? Qrow has given no indication of that. It would be an entirely different situation if, after Tyrian shows up, Qrow growls out something like, ‘Fine, let’s deal with him together and we’ll settle our problems later.’ But he doesn’t. All Clover knows is that now Qrow and Tyrian are both fighters he has to take out somehow... so yeah, use whatever advantage you can get.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We get a shot of Tyrian’s gleeful expression when he sees Clover attack Qrow. He knows now that they’re still fighting each other like they were on the airship and he’s already planning how to use this to his advantage.
Tumblr media
When Tyrian next re-enters the fray, his moves work to defend Qrow. Eventually he succeeds in pushing Clover away from him entirely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While Clover is out of earshot and picking himself off the ground, Tyrian poses his offer: let’s take him out and then the two of us can finish that unsettled score.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Qrow charges and, as I’ve mentioned elsewhere, it’s impossible to know who he’s charging at. Tyrian and Clover are both ahead of him. He’s attacked each prior to this moment. Clover is just as likely a target as Tyrian so, again, when he sees his opening he takes it. We can assume this is Clover interrupting an attack against Tyrian, but it would just be that: an assumption. Neither the audience nor Clover knows Qrow’s intentions here but, thus far, his intentions towards Clover have not been good. So he takes advantage of this moment where he can snag Qrow’s weapon and get a hit on Tyrian.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At this point in the fight Clover hasn’t a single reason to trust Qrow to have his back. Even if he wanted to still believe in him that hope is obliterated when Tyrian once again gets between them and pushes Clover back.
Tumblr media
They share their look. This is Qrow agreeing with Tyrian’s proposition to take out Clover together.
Tumblr media
And they attack.
Tumblr media
We then know the rest of the fight. Clover is overwhelmed, his aura is broken, and Tyrian slams Qrow’s weapon through his stomach. So to answer your actual question, yes. Clover has agency... but I honestly don’t think he did anything wrong here. He never “set himself up” to be killed. He certainly never “stopped Qrow from attacking Tyrian” in the way most people mean the phrase: foolishly stopping an ally from attacking an enemy. What Clover did do was:
Adhere to his responsibilities as a huntsmen by trying to arrest Qrow
Insisted on this happening peacefully and emphasized that they’d work this all out later on
Was attacked by Robyn
Was attacked by Qrow
Tried to talk Qrow down and get Robyn medical attention and was unambiguously rejected
Defended himself against Qrow and Tyrian both, first under the (correct) assumption that both were his enemies in this fight and then again with them working as a team
Was ultimately killed by them both
If we really want to play the ‘You attacked a (former) ally instead of Tyrian’ game then we also need to acknowledge when Clover succeeded in subduing Tyrian and instead of helping him, Qrow a) deliberately left his weapon unattended (you can see him look to it before running off) and b) broke Clover’s aura. Both actions led directly to his death.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We even get to see the split second Tyrian realizes that Qrow has chosen to continue attacking Clover instead of helping with his capture. Remember how stupid Robyn’s agreement with Tyrian was? If you’re doing what the crazy, Salem worshiping villain wants you to do, then what you’re doing is wrong.
Tumblr media
I adore Qrow, but he was entirely in the wrong here. Every decision he made from deciding to help Robyn attack Clover, to breaking his aura after Tyrian was bound, to blaming Ironwood for it all was just a Grade A Stupid Choice. To my mind, the only knock against Clover is the argument that he shouldn’t have tried to arrest anyone in the first place which, as I’ve made clear both here and elsewhere, I find to be entirely unpersuasive. Clover was the victim. He tried to do his job in the most peaceful, empathetic way possible and was murdered for it. That murder was assisted by someone he thought he could trust and who he considered to be a friend.
No, no one was a “mindless puppet” here. They all made their own choices. The difference is that Clover’s choices were based in responsibility, legality, hope, and compassion. Qrow’s were based in recklessness, illegality, pessimism, and hatred. Those choices simply aren’t equal.

close minded/open-minded: Want someone who can think outside the box? Jen is your man.
calm/anxious: Depends on the situation. Usually he’s pretty calm/confident, but when things really start going downhill he’ll start to get nervous.
disagreeable/agreeable: Stubborn little shit. Getting in an argument with him is like trying to make a concrete wall move.

patient/impatient: He can’t sit around waiting for stuff to happen. He’s gotta get right to the task at hand, ASAP.
outspoken/reserved: If he has something to say, he’s gonna say it. Whether he actually should or not. He’s got a mouth on him.

empathetic/unemphatic: This is the one that really messed with the alignment test lol. He’s greedy, he’s a lawbreaker...and then there’s his compassion and desire to help those in need because he has a strong sense of empathy for those in bad situations.
optimistic/pessimistic: He’s...kind of a weird combo of the two. Like...optimistic pessimism??? Okay I just looked it up and that actually is a thing and it fits him super well: He prepares for the worst, but is happy when things turn out. He also says things that can really contradict each other (”Oh, it’s just a [insert horrible thing they have little chance against]. We’ve got this!”)

Vyori’s Crew
So this is just a compilation of the crew mates on Vyori’s ship and a little bio on them. I might actually start writing a story for my characters, but I’m not sure yet. We’ll see. There is a long read under the cut, hence why its a read more past Vyori’s bio. If anyone is interested in helping me write a story or RPing with my characters just DM me <3 :3
Tumblr media
Vyori - Captain - Vyori was born to modest Hylotl parents in one of the various undersea cities established in wake of the Floran/Hylotl war. When Vyori was born, she was unfortunately born with a defective third eye. Her parents were able to remove the non-functional eye and repair the indenture to her skull so that it would seem mostly normal. Despite her parents doing this, she was less favored than her brother who often received more praise for less work and effort. Her scar made it hard for her to blend in to her surroundings in the city, often picked on by other Hylotl kids for her “lack of true sight.” It made Vyori despise most of her own people as she never valued the Hylotl above other species in the world. At the first opportunity she saw she left her ocean city for the Protectorate program on Earth, and after escaping the destruction of the planet on a dead Hylotl’s ship, she started a new life for herself.
After repairing her ship’s FTL drive, she began to explore the stars as she had dreamed of doing as a young Hylotl. She was able to make a new family of her own, meeting up with Stormspear, Windmarch, and Finn shortly after her ship was repaired and expanding her crew-family from there. Happily married to Windmarch, Vyori is very level-headed and mild mannered. She strives to analyze a situation without rushing in on emotions. If you threaten her loved ones however, there is little mercy left for you. (Especially if you dare threaten or harm Windmarch) She is respectful to her elders and to other’s cultures, finding the varying species and their traditions all intriguing in their own way. (The only race that Vyori is skeptical of is the Avian race, as she feels that they are too dependent on their deity.)
Tumblr media
Stormspear - Medic - One of the original three members of Vyori’s crew, Stormspear is the senior most officer on the ship with Vyori’s highest level of trust and respect. He is much of a father figure to Vyori after her a shaky relationship with her birth parents due to her birth deformity. Stormspear provided a much more nurturing and loving relationship than her true Hylotl parents, and after discovering her poor history with said parents, Stormspear declared Vyori to be his adopted daughter.  Vyori gave him a necklace she had intended to return to her birth father, feeling as though it belonged to her new “father” instead. Stormspear wears this necklace with pride.
As the senior most officer on the ship, Vyori consults with him and Windmarch when it comes to on ship disagreements or salvaging missions. He is always ready to dispense his wisdom to his adoptive daughter.
Tumblr media
Benyahi - Soldier - A Floran soldier recruited by Vyori after he saved her life in a Floran hunting ground. Ben, for short, is very short tempered but loyal to the core and will always be there for his team. He finds his best companionship in Finn and Bebi aboard the ship, as well as his lover Zahia. It is Zahia who is often able to calm him down should someone or something set of his anger. Vyori is mindful of his temper, but she takes advantage of his combat skill in training with him aboard the ship to improve her own combat abilities.
Tumblr media
Chiyoko - Medic - A Hylotl student taken under the wing of Stormspear after showing an increased intelligence in the medical field. Due to her Hylotl species she is much easier adept at taking care of and treating Vyori herself when she is incapacitated. Chiyoko has a soft temperament, and prefers to not go out on excursions from the ship. She has done extensive research on genetics and has done her best to help Vyori with her birth defect. Through her work she has been able to make the indenture in Vyori’s skull virtually non-existent, improving on the surgeon’s work from her childhood surgery.
Tumblr media
Bebi - Mechanic - Befriended not long after Benyahi and Zahia joined the ship, Bebi showed an interest in the mechanics of the ship versus the typical fighting nature of the Florans. He quickly took to Windmarch, the ship’s head mechanical engineer and learned quickly how to assist in repairs to the ship as well as keeping the on board research equipment up to date and functional.
Tumblr media
Ren - Tailor - As the older brother, Ren and Vyori have a very strained relationship. While their anatomical similarties are stunning, leading many to believe that Ren is her twin brother, their personalities are strikingly different. Ren deserted their family when he was old enough to escape, and ended up becoming a wandering fashion designer. Through the years Vyori truly never expected to find him again, but she found him struggling to survive on a lunar base. Being sympathetic, she decided to let him come live on her ship in exchange for his tailor services for her crew. Their sibling relationship was further strained when it was revealed she was married to Windmarch, a Glitch. Ren does hold strongly to Hylotl values of purity and tranquility, and doesn’t take very lightly to her mixed marriage, as it often results in many many arguments.
Ren is very spiteful, and willing to take advantage of anyone and everyone in order to further himself until his luck runs out and he has to start over from the beginning. Having very little sympathy for any race or species aside from other Hylotl. A explosive physical fight aboard Vyori’s ship resulted in her dropping her brother off on a desolate planet to fend for himself, rendering him no longer an active member of Vyori’s crew.
Tumblr media
Windmarch - Lead Mechanic - Windmarch joined Vyori’s ship right along side Stormspear. He was one of the original three members of the crew, and while he was always a little bit more quiet, he was very adept at learning and adjusting to new environments. Working closely with Vyori to keep her ship in working order until another mechanic could be employed he developed a crush on her. With encouragement from Finn, Windmarch gained the courage to actually ask Vyori to be his girlfriend. Their first year together aboard the ship saw both Windmarch and Vyori just barely escaping death, with Vyori bringing a severely damaged Windmarch back to Stormspear after being ganged up on by some bandits. Later on it was Vyori who was victim to a group of Avian she had encountered in her first few months aboard her ship who swore vengeance on her for claiming the treasures of a Avian tomb for herself. When Vyori was in recovery with Chiyoko, Windmarch proposed to her and as soon as she was healed the two were happily married.
Windmarch is a very happy and go-lucky Glitch, always preferring optimism to pessimism. While he is typically a very open Glitch, he still has his serious side that will show when those he loves are threatened. (Seriously, if you threaten Vyori or Finn you are going to fucking die by his hands.)
Tumblr media
Finn - Soldier - As one of the few survivors of Earth’s destruction, Finn was recruited on Vyori’s ship alongside Windmarch and Stormspear. Finn was very close to Windmarch, and was the biggest supporter of his pursuit of Vyori. It was through Finn’s encouragement that Windmarch and Vyori ended up in a happy relationship. Despite being a soldier, at heart Finn only fights to protect those that he truly cares for, having found that in his found family aboard Vyori’s ship.
Tumblr media
Badde - Chemist - As the sole chemist aboard Vyori’s ship, Badde is the first consult for Stormspear and Chiyoko when it comes to adapting new medications and other supplements that can benefit the health and performance of others on the ship. Badde was a sort of outcast in his home town, having desired a higher calling than the simple country life of his fellow Novakids.
Tumblr media
Zahia - Engineer - As far as Florans go, Zahia is one of the smartest, becoming a master of engineering at a young age. Zahia was brought aboard Vyori’s ship accompanying Benyahi as they were secret lovers looking for a chance to flee their home. With Benyahi saving Vyori’s life in the Floran Hunting ground on their native planet, Zahia quickly jumped at the opportunity for adventure. Should there ever arise an issue with the ship, Zahia is the one to call for the quick repair and fix.
Tumblr media
Yach - Engineer - An engineering student to Zahia, Yach was promising on his home planet as he strove to discover the truth behind the ancient technology of Avian temples and tombs. While Vyori, Chiyoko, and Zahia were on a frozen tundra taking refuge from a particularly bad snowstorm in his home village, Yach was inquisitive about their travels and everything they learned. Zahia was eager to share his knowledge with the fledgling, and with the blessing of Kluex and his family he joined Vyori’s crew.
Tumblr media
Yrian - Janitor - Yrian was part of a wandering group of humans traveling from star to star, struggling to survive on what little resources and a derelict dying spaceship. When Vyori touched down to the planet they had resided on temporarily, she helped to repair their desolate ship as best as they could so that they had a better chance of survival. Yrian was so moved by her compassion, that he practically begged to be a part of her crew, offering his service as a cleaner and janitor for the ship. While most would look down on this position, Yrian is perfectly content with his job and strives to make sure the ship is immaculate.

unpopular opinion: the bai shiting/tian zilong rooftop scene did yukimura a disservice.
(you can disagree but please do so politely. i am not in that good an emotional state right now.)
of course I know, shiting isn’t seiichi, that’s the point of having an adaptation, you can rewrite the characters and they sometimes turn out better than the original (lu xia, lu xiangqian, mu siyang). but I find it very hard to believe that yukimura would laugh and say ‘your face looks a bit scary’ and poke sanada’s face.
why? because yukimura has never been seen as someone weak. he’s fought to bring rikkai to the top, he’s been fighting skilled opponents since he was young. the illness is so debilitating because he’s lost control. yukimura rushes through rehab just so he can play tennis, so he can stand on the court and be strong again.
yukimura’s prideful. and in that rooftop scene, there’s not much room to interpret tian zilong’s expression/tone - it’s pity and concern. yukimura doesn’t strike me as someone who would accept that readily, he would be disgusted that his vice-captain who he could readily beat 6-0 is pitying him.
in general, shiting’s pessimism just seems to lack yukimura’s vitality? all his sun setting metaphors and the fact that he types 我已经很久没有打网球了(I haven’t played tennis in a long time) in a text message to zilong... playing tennis is more of a wish than a goal. he’s not talking about rejoining them on the courts, he’s talking about what he used to have.
then again, maybe shiting is just yukimura three years down the road, slightly more jaded, aware of what society wants you to do and how difficult it is to go pro, and conscious of what a fifty percent chance at age eighteen mean.
addendum 1: on zilong’s texting. from the scene before shiting’s surgery, we can see zilong sending him 5 texts in quick submission. could be a subtle ref to sanada using a handphone designed for the elderly in tenipuri, but what about this - zilong’s worried that if he doesn’t type fast, shiting won’t be around to see his messages...
addendum 2: the bai shiting/tian zilong rooftop scene is told to us from liu lian’s POV. shiting seems to be addressing zilong alone. you can interpret this however you want (the obvious inference is liu lian ships alpha pair) but I'm a biased troika fan so this is what I like to think - shiting didn’t need to tell liu lian he decided to be admitted to hospital because liu lian already knew. liu lian talked shiting into breaking the news to zilong before the rest of the team.

I was tagged (ages ago, like a week) by the wonderful @thevikingwoman Thank you!!!
I wanted to do it earlier, but I needed to think it over and in the meantime I got consumed by Netflix. I’m very new to that platform, but after already finishing both seasons of Jessica Jones I’m now completely obsessed with Daredevil (first season). They are so good! I’m so glued to the TV :)
Anyway, I had a small dilemma with names :) 3Jane is not exactly a very elven name :) But I always name my characters Molly and 3Jane, both are characters from William Gibson’s Sprawl trilogy books. So I think I’ll keep the names of her family members close to the books - just in case you wandered what the heck those are :).

Introducing Benjamin Whitney. He is a Name Partner at Dorsey & Whitney that belongs to the Summer District. He’s 37 years old and strongly resembles Patrick J. Adams. He’s an open Plot-related character.
Get to know him…
Benjamin’s personality is a perfect balance between confidence, inquisitiveness, and heart-warming naiveté. He is a brilliant man whose mind works a mile a minute; he’s intrigued in the details that compose the bigger picture. Ben became a lawyer with the sole purpose of helping people, he prides himself in the sincere and friendly connection he makes with his clients. He has always believed that people are fundamentally good and, more often than not, he’s had a lesson to learn from every letdown. Few things get Ben stuck in a rut; when he does, it’s a maniacal show of overworking perfectionism and pessimism that he has to be slapped out of. Though he might look like a starry-eyed individual, those that have dared mess with him have learned he’s an unstoppable, intelligent force not to be reckoned with.
Welcome to the coast…
Growing up, Ben gave little thought when it came down to leaving his humble home in Tulsa. Even when he was always being pushed up a grade, he took his big fish status with a grain of salt; his teachers were always frustrated with him being so bright yet, so unbelievably lazy. He spent most of his time reading his grandmother’s old novels, falling in love with characters like Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes. Even as he felt himself being tugged into a Literary path when college admissions came around, it all changed when his grandma passed away. Due to some missing paperwork, his grandmother’s lawyer tried to screw his family out of their inheritance. Ben wasn’t having it and, even with no knowledge to his name, his heroes never failed to inspire him. He made it a mission to research and investigate as much as he could with the sole purpose of helping his parents’ lawyer set the record straight. Even if it took years to settle, the new lawyer found Ben was someone with a lot of promise. Having graduated from his community college at just 18 years old, she didn’t hesitate to push the young man into pursuing a legal career. Something with a purpose, something where he could help people like his family. Every single Whitney, including himself, was surprised when he got into Harvard Law. Unfortunately, his days of slacking off were cut short by a guy named Richard Dorsey. Ben found he was the only real competition he had in that generation...and he wasn’t just going to let Rick call him puppy and get away with it. They decided to team up in order to create a mock-trial team that put everyone else to shame. Where Richard was ruthless, Benjamin was calculating. After a while, he realized he cared about Rick like family. When they graduated together, Ben chose to follow Rick back to New York and, with the support of their fellow attorneys and former mentors, they established their law firm– Dorsey & Whitney. Even if they started out with virtually nothing to their names, their hard work and patience was enough for the pair to slowly– yet, succesfully establish offices and connections all over the world. Ben, who had always been the pioneer when it came to expanding their offices, found a business proposition that they couldn’t afford to pass up on if they wanted to own the East Coast. Even if he wasn’t completely sure why Rick had changed his tune and made his case to move their new offices from Miami to the relatively unknown Costa Serena, it didn’t take much convincing for him to agree. Once everything was settled and a team was formed, Rick left and Ben found himself with the reigns of their most renowned office. Needless to say, the New York ship was being led by one of the best captains in the entire business.
Stay a while…
At a global level, Dorsey & Whitney parades impeccable winning streaks on their cases... this level of excellence had made Ben proud and a little bored. There’s no denying the rush of every folder-contained challenge, but the man has started to wonder if he’s still doing everything he can to help the people he once vowed to devote his life to. Richard’s invitation to join him for a couple of months in Costa Serena couldn’t have come at a better time; he hopes his purpose comes back to him as well as some long overdue rest. Ben is also looking forward to picking up a case or two, he wonders whether some pro bono work will help him regain his sense of usefulness.
Connections:
Richard Dorsey (Best Friend / Partner): Although their approach to the law couldn’t be any more different, they’re always pushing each other to be better. Ben admires Rick because of his spirit, though he’d like for him to stay away from some of his questionable clients.
Walter Dawson (Friend / Coworker): Their relationship started off on the worst foot but, there was no denying the man had an amazing brain in that inflated head of his. Now that they’re both in Costa Serena, Ben’s slowly warming up to the man.
Olivia Flaversham (Acquaintance): He never thought he would reencounter his old client’s daughter in Costa Serena, but he’s glad to have another familiar face around as he settles in the town.

The Finalysis: Ask The Dreadnought Crew
Hellooo again, everyone!
I apologize that it took so long to finish this, compared to my previous Finalysis post of @askgoopi characters. But now that I did, let’s dive right in! Here are the Myers-Briggs personality types of 14 original characters from @askthedreadnoughtcrew:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If the terminology is confusing, see my MBTI Basics tag. Maybe I should have included that in past personality analysis posts. Also, I have not managed to make the pictures show up in high-res on my blog... Anyway, as in the previous Finalysis posts, I explain my reasoning for giving each character the type that I did below the break:
Atlas: Probably INTP.
Since Atlas "is pretty lazy and likes doing nothing," he is probably not a Te- or Fe-dominant, and probably lacks high Si. Te and Fe are known for leadership and motivating action, while Si is generally known for consistency and hard work. His high patience level makes Se unlikely — especially since he does not react to his surroundings, even when they are on fire. Se characteristically is very quick in reacting to the outside environment, whereas iNtuitors are often too stuck in their heads. On that note, his "most appropriate TV Tropes" include "Beware the Silly Ones" and "Brilliant But Lazy," which are both linked to Ne's eccentric cleverness.
Atlas’s dominant function is less clear than his tertiary. On the one hand, he is "The Anti-Nihilist," which shows exactly the kind of positive, hopeful individualist existentialism that often flows from Fi. On the other, his totally apathetic and non-reactive demeanor suggests Ti, whereas INFPs are often far more emotional and reactive.
Breeze: Probably ENTP.
Ever since childhood, this neon yellow "nerd" programmer "[a]lways tried to bend the rules and find loopholes," showing Ne's nonconformism and Ti's love of logically deconstructing socially accepted rules. Both of those traits have continued and only increased through her love of hacking. NTPs are probably disproportionately common to programmers like her and hackers in particular. As a "Playful Hacker," Breeze shows mischievous Ne instead of serious Ni. Her "weaknesses" include that she "[e]xpects everything to go perfectly and doesn't have a backup plan in case something fails," showing her tendency to think in theoretical (N) instead of practical (S) terms. It also shows that she prefers logic (Ti) to logistics (Te). The "pride," love of "learning new things," and "[s]omewhat high" patience level that Breeze displays further support a Ne-dominant typing: _NTPs in particular show high pride, N-types are generally more fond of learning, and Se-types tend to have lower patience.
I first considered that Breeze could be an INTP because her Charahub calls her "sometimes gloomy," "[s]uspicious of anyone who she's never met," and "sometimes The Cracker," i.e., a "computer criminal." However, she smiles in most of the posts she appears in (as of 2018-08-09; contrast Ti-dominants like Ayjo and Malik), so she is an extraverted edgelord. Also, @askthedreadnoughtcrew said that "I don't think that The Cracker really describes her well - she's more of a Playful Hacker (she only hacks for fun, and almost never with malicious intents)" (PMs 2018-07-27). Even when I thought her an INTP, I noticed that Breeze is surprisingly social and optimistic: the glass is "half full," she is "close friends" with "everyone except for Weldon and Davan," and she "want[s] to get married[,] ... have kids, [and] raise a family." While the half-full/half-empty distinction probably shows a weak connection to personality type at most, an INTP typing cannot easily explain it or Breeze's wide friendship circle.
I next considered that Breeze could be an ENFP, since she seemed to show Fi when explaining that her crew is not under Giegue's authority: "I’ve heard that Giegue is a huge jerk. And we don’t take orders from jerks, hell no." However, this could stem from Ne's nonconformity and the influence of tertiary Fe. But the most powerful evidence against ENFP is her distrust of strangers (PMs 07-27):
"Breeze can be suspicious of strangers or others that she doesn't know well or at all, but once she feels close enough to someone and knows that they aren't a threat, she becomes a lot more relaxed and trusting of that person. She just takes a while to warm up to others."
E_F_ types are generally cheerful, friendly, and trusting even to strangers (see Iso and Manjula), and ENFPs are particularly infamous for over-trusting. I could not even try to explain Breeze's suspicion of strangers using an ENFP typing, since I have said that other characters (e.g. Spooks and Static) are ENFP largely because they are not suspicious of strangers (based on Bayesian logic). I apologize for the length of this explanation, but of all the @askthedreadnoughtcrew characters, Breeze confused me the most. Still, an ENTP typing can reconcile the ostensibly contradictory traits which confused me before.
CJ: Seems like an ISTP.
When an anon asked what he was planning to pick up at the post office, CJ said "that's none of your business." That reply shows the independence, suspicion of others, and blunt rudeness common to ISTPs. The same blunt rudeness characterized his reply when Ryn asked for help finding Clay and Jaxter. After CJ said that he did not know and criticized Ryn's search strategy, CJ abruptly left without offering to help, which was "pretty rude." Both of these show the inferior Fe apathy for social norms. So does CJ's lack of concern that his loud music bothers his neighbor Lyra. All of these seem to indicate inferior Fe.
CJ's lack of eccentric, mischievous, or overtly intellectual tendencies shows no evidence for Ne, whereas his bluntness seems to indicate auxiliary Se. However, I have not seen a general description of CJ. I am inferring his personality only from his demeanor in a few scenes, so I have low confidence in calling him an ISTP.
Clay: Probably ISTJ.
Since Clay is "constantly, but not always, emotionless," he is almost certainly not a Feeling type. Usually he comes across as calm, quiet, and indifferent, indicating I_T_. His cynical pessimism (the "glass" is "100% empty") indicates the same. As a "Bookworm" whose favorite activity is reading and whose "favorite book" is "[a]ll of them," Clay is a nerd prefers to spend his time on calm (I__J) instead of more exciting (E__P) activities — although he does consider life "boring." Yet fear may be one of his most often-felt emotions (a common problem of inferior Ne), as he is "[u]sually too scared to stand up for anything" and would "have a panic attack" if he suddenly transitioned to our world.
That leaves ISTJ or INTJ, with his fear making the former more likely. As Ni-dominants, INTJs are generally driven by some kind of grand plan for the future. However, "Clay really doesn't know what he's going to do with his life, and he doesn't particularly care that much, either. He just prefers to travel around with his crew and not have to think about the future" (PMs with @askthedreadnoughtcrew 2018-07-29). Clay is then an ISTJ which, although an unsurprising type for a gieeg who is commanding a crew, is ironic since he initially set off into space to escape from the gieeg leadership.
Davan: Almost certainly ESTP.
Davan "dislikes boring stuff, [and] people who boss him around," which shows stereotypical Se impatience and rebelliousness. He is a "very irresponsible mook with a mysterious past that likes to party a lot." It is very unlikely for Te-dominants to be irresponsible as a trait, and even less likely for them to be indifferent about it. The hardest part of Clay's daily rituals is "keeping Davan under control" since the mook is an impulsive pyromaniac. Davan "likes Partying, Clay, [and] annoying Clay." When asked whether he likes parties, Davan was not available to answer — because he was at a party. Parties provide the intense sensory and social stimulation that Se craves, which is why Se-dominants are often stereotyped as party animals. Crude language and crude humor are common to Se-dominants, and Davan is so crude that others try to keep him away from Ryn. The "coolest people he knows" are "me, myself, and I," displaying the flippant narcissism common to stereotypical E_TPs.
However, Davan's Se-dominance is not always a burden to the crew. It once saved all of their lives. When the Dreadnought was about to crash into a huge asteroid, all of the Starmen froze — but Davan jumped in and steered the ship to safety. Heroism may seem unlikely from someone so narcissistic and "very irresponsible." But when an unexpected emergency happens and needs someone to act fast, impulsive and down-to-earth Se-dominants can be counted on to save the day. Maybe "heroism" is too strong a word, since Davan may have only acted to save his own skin. But the fact remains that without his action, the ship and its crew would not have survived.
Deimos: Probably ISTJ.
This poor fellow is "usually gloomy all the time and doesn't like talking to people," showing introversion. His attitude towards life and love is "*shrug,*" showing an indifference to idealism and to relationships which suggests low iNtuition and Feeling functions. Similarly, the "most appropriate TV Tropes" to describe Deimos are "Sour Outside, Sad Inside [and] The Eeyore" (although only "sometimes"). All of those show the cynicism common to I_T_ types. "He can somehow always find the exact supplies that the crew of the Dreadnought need," which either shows the apparent instinct that ISTPs have for being a mechanic (compare Ayjo and Beams) or the ISTJ's excellent memory for practical details.
Indifference seems more likely among ISTPs than ISTJs, but besides that, his traits primarily show ISTJ. Since he "dislikes Nova's short temper" as well as "Atlas' laziness and bad jokes," he seems to prefer to keep others in line. The "kind of student" he would be if he "were to attend school" is a constantly sad kid who "doesn't try and somehow still gets straight A's." ISTPs, unlike ISTJs are not known for academic success because of the impatient, non-systematic high Se. Most importantly, Deimos is "a hard worker" because he "is usually the one who keeps the other starmen in check and makes sure they’re doing what they’re supposed to be doing" (PMs with @askthedreadnoughtcrew 2018-07-27). Enforcing (J) rather than resisting (P) the rules, and a strong work ethic, are probably the most significant noticeable difference between ISTJ and ISTP.
Gemini: Seems like an ISFP.
"Everyone on the Dreadnought is just a little scared of" this badass noodle "tough fighter" who "wouldn't hesitate to beat someone up" even as a child. Even then, she wanted to become a fighter later in life. Since she cultivates a persona of fear, she is probably neither E_F_ nor __FJ. Those types usually try to befriend — or at least act friendly towards — everyone (contrast Ryn).
Outwardly, she has a cold demeanor, smiling in only 1 out of the 9 posts she appeared in (as of 2018-08-04; contrast Ryn's 12 out of 21). A colder outward demeanor is more common among introverts and those without high Fe. From that and her toughness, "other people assume" that "she's rude."Yet she has a few things in common with Ryn: the thing that "brings [her] the most joy" is "[k]nowing that she's being helpful," she "usually" acts "kind to others," and she considers "[e]veryone except Davan" important to her. Kindness and the desire to help others, without Fe's warmth, show strong Fi. Her toughness shows strong Se — especially her kind of toughness. She likes fighting, but not from a desire to harm others. In fact, her favorite sparring partner is Jaxter, who is her partner if ya know what I mean the most important person in her life. Those strongly support ISFP.
It is a bit harder to explain why she is "a bit self-centered" and enjoys "boasting" with an ISFP typing, since narcissism is linked most closely to _NTP types. Maybe Fi sometimes makes her focus too much on herself, and boasting comes from Se's competitive instinct? Although her pride and occasional self-centeredness lowers my confidence in ISFP, that still seems like the most likely type.
Jaxter: Probably INFP, maybe INTP.
Perhaps the most eccentric and quirky member of the crew, Jaxter "Likes [q]uiet places, video games, [and] fixing things." Those completely solitary places/activities strongly suggest that Jaxter is an introvert. An eccentric and quirky yet muted personality usually shows auxiliary Ne (compare Loris, Niiue, and Origen). Also, Jaxter "panics a lot and is very clumsy and awkward." Clumsiness suggests a low Sensing function (contrast Gemini's physical competence), and social awkwardness suggests low/no Fe, although those are both weak associations. "Sloth" is the "deadly sin that best represents" him, which shows that he does not have high Si because that usually produces a strong work ethic (contrast Deimos and Saral). These all suggest IN_P.
While it is not stated explicitly, Jaxter is emotionally sensitive. His tendencies to panic show a high reactivity to stressful stimuli, ones that may not affect less sensitive others. Contrast his screaming, horrified reaction to the engine almost exploding with Atlas (INTP) not reacting at all to the engine actually exploding. Hair-trigger stress and fear reactions usually imply low Ne, a high Feeling function, or both. This fear combines with his shyness and social awkwardness to produce social sensitivity: he withdraws from social situations more often than others out of fear. For example, Jaxter "used to be pretty intimidated by Gemini," probably even more than is normal for the crew. I_T_ types disproportionately withdraw from social situations too, but usually because of apathy and annoyance (contrast Calliope, Malik, and Marie). Therefore, while I thought him an _NTP at first partially from his resemblance to Doc Brown, he is more likely an INFP.
Jett: Seems like an ISTP.
This bug flying a badass, maximally edgy, spike-covered Lil UFO shows apathy to the concerns of others — especially his neighbor Lyra, who he said "is SO annoying" because she complained about him blasting loud music for the "eleventh" time. His dismissive apathy shows low Fe: even if a high-Fe-user did not care, they would probably at least act as if they cared. Also, when Jett's roommate CJ said that he was going to the post office, Jett's comment showed the blunt tone and independence-focused mindset common to ISTPs: "Well, go for it. It’s not like I’m gonna try to stop you or something." While I cannot type Jett with confidence since he has no Charahub entry and so few posts (as of 2018-08-09), current evidence suggests ISTP.
Lyra: Seems like an _STP.
Lyra is extremely straightforward about her motives for working as Morgandy's assistant: "I do it for the money." The concise and blunt (Se), honest description of focusing on rational self-interest (Ti) supports _STP, as she later shows by often complaining about insufficient pay. Lyra has no patience for Morgandy's language humor, whereas N-types are more likely to enjoy that kind of humor and high Fe-types would hesitate to be so rude. She is also very annoyed, and evidently pissed off, by her neighbors' loud music. If not for Morgandy insisting on asking "POLITELY," Lyra might tell her neighbors "to shove their speakers up their asses," showing the _STP's irritability, crudeness, and lack of concern for politeness or social norms. Even with Morgandy's insistence, Lyra angrily yelled at the neighbors who proceeded not to care.
I have not seen clear evidence of introversion or extraversion, unfortunately, so I cannot assign Lyra a specific type. All of Lyra's posts suggest _STP, but since I have not seen very many of them (or a Charahub entry), I cannot claim high confidence in that conclusion.
Morgandy: Probably ENFP.
As the only "[h]yperactive, cheerful, and childish" gieeg from her blog, Morgandy is a bit unusual. Ever since she was a child, Morgandy was "[u]ltra-hyper and very eager to do everything." Her "annoyingly childish and hyper" tendencies suggest E__P (compare Vivek), and so does her chosen profession as an entertainer. Extraverts are usually more energetic, and Perceivers more spontaneous. Both traits are important in entertainment. The fact that Morgandy "dislikes nothing really" rules out E_TP, matching the stereotype that ENFPs love everything and everyone (compare Spooks). However, Morgandy is not afraid to trash-talk her assistant or brag about her own superiority, unlike many Fe-types who hate to ever be rude.
Morgandy "doesn't like to fight," which is more common for F-types (with notable exceptions including Gemini and other badass SFPs). Morgandy prefers non-confrontational solutions to problems, whereas T-types are more direct and confrontational. Like many iNtuitors, she enjoys making incredibly dumb jokes by playing with language (compare Static). While I have not seen much of her on the blog, what I have seen makes ENFP very likely.
Nova: Seems like an ESTJ.
This "Final Starman who ... always tries to be the best that he can, but usually ends up making a mess ... is determined and will not stop at achieving a goal." That kind of strong-willed focus and determination are most common to high Te and Si users. He has low patience, especially for Atlas's laziness and Deimos's moping. STJs have the least tolerance for laziness: Te values hard work on a practical level, Si does on a moral level, and Te is the least afraid of confrontation. His dislike of "glum Deimos" shows the difference between his extraversion and Deimos' introversion. Extraverts gain energy and motivation from the social environment, so E_T_ types are usually more affected by others' moods. His "bad habits" include "[y]elling" (especially at Atlas), a common one for EST_ types (compare Goopi). That makes ESFJ unlikely: ESFJs usually try to act friendly, and even when they are aggressive, they are almost always passive-aggressive instead of straightforward.
Even though he does not eat, he enjoys cooking. The sensory, detail-oriented, highly formulaic activity is probably enjoyed more by strong Si-users (compare Saral). Also, he has a strong respect for authority. More specifically, Clay is his "role model" and "most important person in [his] life." Strong Si-users are more likely than any other type to intuitively trust authority figures (compare Pia).
An ESTJ typing admittedly has a hard time explaining why Nova has a "fear of nobody liking him," since that is seems more closely linked to Feeling types. Maybe it has to do with his extraversion? Also, it seems odd that he would "never" "dare to kill someone," but perhaps that comes from his Si principles. While ESTJ still explains most of his personality as shown in his Charahub and his posts so far, I do not think that I have seen enough posts to type him with high confidence.
Rynault ("Ryn"): Almost certainly ENFJ.
This "cheerful and optimistic" gieeg "likes helping others" since it "brings him the most joy" out of any activity. Altruism is most common, or at least most explicit, among Fe-dominants. From childhood, he has been "[v]ery eager and optimistic." As mentioned above while discussing Gemini, he smiles a lot. All of that shows the cheery demeanor and upbeat attitude most common to E_F_ types (compare Iso, Spooks, and Static). He stands up for his beliefs, but would never dare to kill anyone, showing Fe's claim to the moral high ground but also its squeamishness. The "most important person in [his] life" is "[e]veryone on the Dreadnought," showing the indiscriminate caring for everyone common to high-Fe types (compare Gabe, Manjula, Penini, Saral, and of course Iso). In contrast, many others (especially T-types) only care about those close to them, but care strongly about those people (contrast Gemini, Giegue, and J).
A natural leader who thinks quickly to do what is best for everyone, Ryn has taken the initiative as the "leader of the group" far more than me than one would expect for an introvert — especially considering that he is only "a 12 [!] year old." One of the main differences between ENFJs and INFJs is that the former are more likely to take the initiative and publicly lead. Ryn shows this tendency in the extreme. He is "smart but not nerdy" which completely rules out the IN__ types, although others often assume that he is a nerd. He has a "very high" patience level, suggesting high Ni or maybe high Si, and conversely "is kind of a klutz when it comes to sharp objects." Physical clumsiness is more common in N-types. While the evidence for his auxiliary Ni may not seem as strong as the evidence for his dominant Fe, Ryn's exceptional charisma is far more common among ENFJs than ESFJs. There is a reason that some people call ENFJs "The Cult Leader" type. While I do not expect Ryn to start a cult anytime soon, he arguably has the right skill set for it.
Weldon: Almost certainly ESTP.
Straight outta the 90s comes this hip dude with, like, a totally rad backwards hat and shades, bro. (Yes, that is how he talks, man.) He is a "huge jerk" (according to Davan and to Weldon's own Charahub) and a "douche" who "likes bragging about himself" and claims to be "too cool to ask for asks, dude." All of those show the callous narcissism associated with immature E_TP types whose Fe is not developed. He also "dislikes when people are better than him" and is "too competitive," combining his narcissism with the impulsive, competitive tendencies of high Se. I considered him an introvert at first because of his "laid-back" and "relaxed" voice and demeanor, but he "doesn't like being alone," which may be the clearest possible evidence of extraversion other than wearing a sign that says “I AM AN EXTRAVERT.”
Concluding Thoughts
That took me longer than I expected. But on the bright side, I realized that I have now completed 89 character analyses — of which I still have many to post. My goal of analyzing 100 characters, which I previously thought unrealistic, suddenly appears within striking distance.
Speaking of "within striking distance," I will probably publish my next Finalysis post in much less time than this one. Part of the reason this one took so long is that I could not make up my mind on whose to post next. Since posting the last one, I have spent time typing characters from this blog, @asktheapplechasers, @only-our-regrets (i.e. ComDis), and @take-a-melody. One of those will probably be featured in my next Finalysis post. If you have a preference for one of them — or a different blog — please feel free to shoot me a message! (Especially because I sometimes have questions about characters' personalities!)

How Men’s Work Made Me A Better Woman
Tumblr media
I’m a fairly petite woman. I come in at just around 5 ½ feet tall with boots on and have never weighed more than 115 lbs soaking wet. I went to college for writing and communication studies, so you can imagine how pale and frail I was coming out of there with my degree in hand (that certificate sure was heavy for me!).
And then, right after graduation, I took up a training program to work on tall ships. If you have no idea what that is, think of the big sailing ships from Pirates of the Caribbean (the boat I trained on was actually in the first of those films). Over two weeks, I learned how to handle ropes, furl sails, and sand any and all types of salt-worn wood you could imagine being out at sea. I learned about maritime history and trade while corralling kids to teach them the same things I had been taught just hours earlier.
The crew of that first ship hated me. To them, I was an irredeemable city girl with an attitude and less muscle than a towel. Behind my back, just a week in, one of the crew members teaching me called me a burden, making sure to be just loud enough so I could hear him. It shattered me. I spent the last few days of my training hiding in storage cubbies, crying and wishing I could rewind time so I was back home writing essays.
But after my two weeks was up and I was free to go back home, something felt…different. I had this spark, and I couldn’t stand the thought of being back in my bedroom letting my leathery callused hands become soft and pink and fragile again. I called up the other ship in the company’s little two-boat fleet and jumped on board, this time determined to prove to these people that I wasn’t some weak city girl, and definitely not a burden. Long story short, the man who called me "burden” saw what I had become a few months later, working with me out at sea, and he promptly apologized. Now we’re good friends, and he regularly messages me from his newest job out at sea to tell me how proud he is of my hard work in life. After three years of working on and off of the boats, whenever one of them is in town, the current captain will ask me personally to come work alongside their crew.
I ended up getting a bit sick and eventually became friends with a veteran-turned-electrician while at the hospital. He offered me experience as his assistant, and from there we worked on various projects while running around homeless. He told me about an organization called Team Rubicon, a veteran (and civilian) disaster relief organization that he felt I would fit perfectly in. Again, my fear of being too fragile and small crept up, but I signed up for TR anyway. They sent me out to Texas after Hurricane Harvey where I did house demolition with a crew that loved my company so much, they were devastated when I got sick while out there and kept asking for my return every chance they got.
It’s been well over a year since all of this now, and I’ve settled back to my life in the city, working at a beer garden by day and writing articles by night (ok, flip that, I’m actually a closer at the beer garden, but you get the idea). My hands are soft and pink and fragile again; my heart is anything but.
Work aboard tall ships and fishing vessels has, until very recently, been strictly a man’s line of work. Historically, women on board a boat were seen as seriously bad luck, and some captains still think that to this day. Veterans and other military personnel are nearly 85% male across the board, although Team Rubicon boasts a higher percentage of women than that. I’ve also done grounds keeping and electrical work, and both of those groups would have been 100% men if I hadn’t have been there.
You may think it was rough, possibly even lonely out there for a little woman like me. And sure, maybe in the moment I sometimes found myself thinking that being one of only a few women seems disconnected from the modern push for feminism and anti-patriarchal takeover. But that seems a little too cynical, a bit like throwing down an anchor of pessimism on something that made me better because few women were doing it too.
Time working in a man’s field taught me a lot about hard work, but even more about building character and introspection. On the ship, you take care of the crew and they take care of you. You become a cog in a machine that desperately needs you to run smoothly, regardless of your gender or background. There were things I thought I couldn’t do simply because of my lack of muscle that, with proper training and practice, I learned was all a matter of technique. Those things I feared doing became something I was good at. Now when things seem tough, I imagine not the muscle or the determination I lack, but the finesse and technique that can turn me into a master of the task.
Late nights standing in the misty, salty cold of the sea, overlooking the horizon for any midnight dangers to the vessel, gave me a drastic change of view on patience. You stand freezing and exhausted for four hours in pitch darkness with two or three others all silently wishing to be asleep. But the time passes, and as you crawl back into bed damp to the core, too tired to take off your boots, you are proud to have passed those hours by in that silent reverence of the beauty all around you and the time spent in your own head. You get to know yourself on the sea, and often that patience is rewarded with something amazing; whales breaching, waves glowing electric blue along their edges, shooting stars cutting along the freckled sky. It’s only in that patience that you get to experience these things. When I find long hours at work in the city dragging painfully slow, I remember the ocean and the hours of nothingness, and I remind myself that it’s just time, that it passes, that all things pass.
Many times when out at sea I thought I would never pull through, never be good enough, and never go back to that lifestyle. I wonder if staying inside writing would be the best lifestyle for me. But it’s looking back on those times with pride that help me get through the rough days at my desk. But in some ways, the dark and frothy ocean was easier than facing a week of writer’s block.
And when you’re faced with a challenge that you seriously can’t do alone, your moral support of those around you may be the best piece to the machine that is your crew. By bringing stories and laughter to my teammates in post-Harvey Texas, the group worked in higher spirits and became the most effective (and fun!) crew in the operation during our time there. In tough moments, I channeled my city girl charm to help the machine run smoothly. In those moments when I thought I wasn’t helping nearly as much as I should have been able to, I realized I was doing the best thing I could for my team by keeping them motivated.
I kept pace with the best of men I ever met, and they gave me my due respect for it.
You can read all the self-help and character-building articles you want, but it’s experience and hardship that really shows your true character, and allows you a better window to see what you might need to change about yourself. Don’t take challenges, obstacles, or suffering as a sign to give up; use it as a way to become stronger inside and build a better version of yourself. It’s not always about muscle; sometimes it’s about finesse. And sometimes, when things are really rough, you just need a woman’s touch to get the job done right.
