thinking about how noting down a single song I heard somewhere has led me down a huge rabbit hole, discovering whole new discographies, genres, and artists I didn't know existed

what about all the songs I didn't remember to note down? those I filtered into the background when I'm focusing on something else?

radiohead’s complicity in israeli-occupied palestine

my feelings on radiohead are complicated these days, as i’m sure they are for many. i'm using this post as a method of sorting out my own thoughts & to provide sources.

for me, the bottom line is this: radiohead is both a brand & a musical group. the brand of radiohead has always had deep roots in the israeli colonial project - they have played many, many shows there throughout their career. their breakout single - creep, was intially only a hit in israel (x, x) & the personal choices of some of radiohead's members remain just as involved. jonny greenwood met his future wife - the israeli artist, antivaxxer & vehement zionist (x) sharona katan - at a show radiohead played in israel in 1993 (x). jonny consistently collaborated with zionist musician shye ben tzur & his projects continue to tour in tel aviv as recently as last september. as for jonny himself - his only statement in regards to the war on gaza has been in mourning for the israeli concert goers on october 10th - w no such empathy spared to the 100,000 palestinians dead, injured, or missing. as for thom, while he’s thrown a few bitchfits (x) through the years abt criticism of radiohead’s shows in israel, he has imo - only paid lipservice to the criticism, saying “playing in a country isn’t the same as endorsing its government” going against the pleas of his peers & coworkers in the music industry. as well as the pro-palestine activism undertaken by his long term friend micheal stipe (x & x). (note: stipe stood by radiohead’s performance in israel in 2017, but his current political choices suggest his understanding of the situation has evolved). even his own son - noah yorke, a fellow working musician, has voiced his opposition to the genocide in gaza via instagram stories. as for the other members, rhythm guitarist ed o'brien has called for a ceasefire, as well as making a few tweets about "solidarity with palestinians & israeli peacemakers". while bassist colin greenwood reportedly refused to accept letters of dialogue from the fan-run organization radiohead fans for palestine. drummer phillip selway's commentary is similarly brief but defensive, saying radiohead's 2017 tel aviv concert "felt right"

to me, this paints a picture of a band who's members stances on israel range from abhorrent to simply not enough. & as a brand, their particular combination of action & inaction amounts to a fundamentally zionist perspective. you cannot separate radiohead as artists from radiohead as a brand name.

i've loved radiohead since i was 14. i was brought into it by another longtime fan. i cried & danced when i saw them live back in 2017 - it was, & remains, a moment that allowed me to live through the hardest parts of my life. i felt for the longest time, that radiohead's music & political positions encouraged my empathy - my questioning of conservative political authority. & while all celebrities are failures in some sense - it is still heartbreaking to know how wrong i was.

i don't think it's possible to disconnect the decade of connection & love i have for their music - I won't ask that of myself or anyone else. & the idea of scrubbing one's taste of the "morally impure" is useless effort & an inappropriate simplification of both art & our conceptions of what makes someone "bad". but i can say with certainty - i will not be giving them any more of my money, whether that be streaming their music or buying their merch - & i encourage you to do the same. silence is complicity - this is beyond silence.

in the words of nina simone - "an artist's duty, as far as i'm concerned, is to reflect the times. how can you be an artist and not reflect the times? that to me is the definition of an artist."

ryouga stood up and left the meeting room without warning. to be tied down like that? that wasn't his style. the only people he listens to are mari - his incredible, beautiful producer and rio, clearly in the hospital. so many times he thinks about quitting this insane industry but he can't. he had to, for rio. it was mari who inspired him to strive higher than he was now. it was all worth it, he thought. it was all for mari and rio.

"welcome back, ryouga-kun." mari greeted the boy as he strolled inside and sat down sloppily beside her. she could tell when something was wrong with him - his facial expression usually tells her everything she needs to know.

"meeting didn't go well?" she asked as she scooted closer to him.

he let out an exhausted sigh - he opened his mouth to speak but then close it as soon as the topic was brought up. mari held his hand as he sat up to look at her - her beautiful features up close. it was one of the many things he loved about her - that and her amazing personality. "ya know, the usual. i only listen to you, and that's it."

"i know you do ryouga-kun," she said. she didn't have to be reminded that sometimes, ryouga likes to do his own thing. he's not one for rules and all that. mari grabbed the thin pile of papers and handed it to ryouga, her expression softened as she did the gesture, "let's look these over and call it a day, hm? we still have to visit rio."

"yeah.. yeah, let's do that."

the idol industry is tough. you have to work hard to survive. but ryouga... he's a fighter. he'll do anything for rio and mari. anything.

"from these two," shu retaliated tersely, tearing the fabric from your arms, "you're not going to be wearing a dress made from such a childish pattern to your matchmaking."

that frigid ire in his tone was his hurt projecting. already, he was deeply hurt to be forced into dressing you up for someone else; why were you making things even more difficult? you were a cruel princess, after all.

I would like to talk to whoever is in charge of contacts/eye-cgi for The Witcher. Because goddamn, y'all have never heard of consistency have you? I'm pretty sure season everyone has had different colored eyes. (Except Joey who needs no enhancement or alteration and we love that for him.) And it's...not exactly what I'd call improvements.

But other than that, I think S3 looks really good. Visually. Not sure about the plot because the trailers have still, as typical, told us nothing. But I'm here for it and excited anyway.

one of my favourite artists, shye, made a new song !! and it's called flower so it fits >:)

random thoughts about the song i guess:

a few months ago, i heard shye perform this live + acoustic and IT WAS SO GOOD?? the recorded version sounds a bit different, with the production added! she changed up the genre a bit and said that this is newer to her (her prev albums/EPs were more soft indie/bedroom pop/electronic), and I can tell she was inspired by Djo's DECIDE. she has said that it was one of her favorite 2022 albums :)

i think this recorded version is quite interesting, and how the vocals get soft/cut off at certain parts :0 it might have to grow on me, because I liked the acoustic version way too much 🤧

the lyrics are really pretty as always! I love the bridge, that type of chord progression omgg. can't wait for her next EP !

album review: Wachito Rico -- boy pablo

initial thoughts

i got some motivation to do another album review again HAHAHSH thanks @dumdum0515 for this rec! i haven't listened to a lot of boy pablo's discography (the few songs i listened to were just okay), so i'm not too sure if i'll like this, but i'm hopeful :)

track 1: ​i hope she loves me back

Okay woah I immediately liked the synth in the beginning! Lyrics are just okay to me, but the whole track is definitely a vibe + his voice fits that vibe, and I generally love the instrumentals.

8/10, i would relisten for the amazing synth

track 2: hey girl

This is groovy! The track starts off strong and immediately with the hook, that is repeated throughout, which makes it quite catchy. I like how it swells at the chorus, and the bridge is really cool too. It reminds me of The Beginning by Magdalena Bay, just slightly

8/10 too, any song that can be compared to The Beginning is amazing in my books

track 3: leave me alone!

THE BUILD UP BEFORE THE FIRST CHORUS?? it was unexpected and it works SO WELL with the chorus! plus that outro after that?? omg. I also love the bridge, it's a vibee. I like the drums in this song, and generally like the melody more than the previous two, so:

9.5/10! it was an immediate add to playlist

track 4: honey

The lyrics on this track are quite pretty and poetic, this is quite nice and the repeated notes in the chorus remind me of 'if i let u in' by Shye.

6/10, a very decent track! (I just liked it less than the previous 3)

track 5: rest up

Hmm, this track is okay! The hook is pretty good, and I just realised boy pablo's voice sounds kinda similar to Rex Orange County LOL.

also 6/10!

track 6: te vas // don't go

A cute and quite an aesthetic song! The lyrics feel like they can be quoted, and the bridge sounds like it would fit the ending of an episode in a tv series, when there's a resolution (something like Space Song in Wednesday)

6/10 too, still a decent track!

track 7: aleluya

Aww a sweet interlude! I like the vibes, and it extends from te vas//don't go quite well!

track 8: come home

Strong beginning again! It cools off into a more chill, slower pace which fits the home-y and welcoming vibes that the lyrics are trying to convey. Lyrics and melody/rhythm are integrated really well in this :)

track 9: mustache

This is okay to me! I like the general hook and the back part, the instrumentals after the lyrics

track 10: vamos a la playa

It's speeding up the pace for the next track, and OH THE TRANSITION?? Albums get bonus points to me if they have great transitions, so it looks like this album is going to qualify

track 11: wachito rico

OHH title track time. I immediately liked this! Instrumentals and melody, high scores across the board, plus a cool bridge?!!

track 12: nowadays

A quieter, acoustic track! Love the vibes and it sets the mood for the last 2 tracks from this album. Really quotable lyrics too, and the repeated lyrics work well in this track

track 13: i <3 u

I love this soft track, it ends the album well, especially the slower cool down from the bridge onwards. How the instrumentals briefly pause,, i love that type of syncopation so much!

I love this song so much!! With the creative use of build ups and quite a unique mix, it is memorable and reminds me of my favourite synth-pop tracks (although it's not exactly synth-pop). Definitely my favourite from this album

Overall, this album is very cohesive and I appreciate the 3 transition tracks! This was better than I expected and I'll definitely be listening to leave me alone! for a bit, and I'm sure the slower songs will grow on me with another listen.
