Sat down the other day and let myself just think my thoughts in words and pictures. It's nice to make panels that don't fit and draw things straight to ink and put the words in crooked and realize that it still tells a story. It doesn't have to be perfect. This is just for nice.

This has probably been transcribed before but I don't know what tags to find it under, so imma just do it again cuz this kind of stuff feels very relevant to know, more evidence that Humans are weird as fuck and our brains just make shit up. [Twitter thread by user named foone as a long image I stumbled upon on Pinterest]: _______________________________
You want to know something about how bullshit our brains are? OK, so there's a physical problem with out eyes: We move them in short fast bursts called "saccades", right? very quick, synchronized movements. The only problem is: they go all blurry and useless during this
Having your vision turn into a blurry mess every time you move your eyes is obviously not a good idea, so our brains hide it from us. Now imagine you're an engineer and you have this problem
You've got some obvious solutions you could do.
make the vision go black during movement. (Some VR games do this!)
just keep showing the last thing we saw prior to movement
Both are good options with different downsides, but OH NO. this is assuming everything makes sense and is chronological and (regular) logical.
Your brain does neither of these options, really.
First, it basically puts your visual system on "pause".
You're not seeing blackness or even nothing, you're just not seeing period.
then when you finish your saccade, it shows you what you now see at the new position. and then it pretends it can time travel.
It seriously shows you the image at the new point, but time-shifts it backwards so that it seems like you were seeing it the whole time your eyes were moving.
And because your brain is not a computer with a consistent clock, this shit works.
You can see this effect happen if you watch an analog clock with a second hand.
Look away (with just your eyes, not your head), then look back to the second hand.
It'll seem like it takes longer than a second to move, then resumes moving as normal.
That's because your freaking visual system just lied to you about HOW LONG TIME IS in order to cover up the physical limitations of those chemical camera orbs you have on the front of your face.
We've known about this effect for over 100 years, it's called "Saccadic masking" and more specifically Chronostasis. Your visual system lies to you about WHEN things happen by up to half a second (!) just to avoid saccades blurring everything.
So while I firmly believe we're basically just overgrown biological computers, we're apparently computers programmed by batshit insane drunkards in Visual Basic 5.
And you might think "hey wait, wouldn't my vision 'pausing' for half a second have all kinds of weird effects on moving objects? why don't they appear to stutter when moving?"
and the answer is simple! your brain has EVEN MORE UGLY HACKS on top of this to avoid you seeing that
If you've got a clock where the second hand doesn't "tick" but instead smoothly rotates, you won't see this. Because your brain recognizes it's moving and adjusts what you see to make sure it sees the "right" thing.
It's only really obvious with periodically moving things like a clock hand, because it's not moving (so not triggering the movement-during-chronostasis hack) but it moves at a set rate, so you can notive that rate appearing to change.
It's tempting to think of your eyes and visual system as a camera just dumping a video feed into your conscious brain but taht's so very, very not the case. What you think you see and what your eyes can actually see are two exceptionally different things.
The big obvious one being the blind spot. Vertebrate eyes are wired backwards so we've got a blind spot in each eye where the enrves enter into the eye. About 6 degrees of your vision in each eye is just not there, as there's no light sensitive cells there.
Do you see a blind spot, right now? No, you probably don't. Close one eye! There's now no way for the other eye to fill in the gaps. Still, no blind spot… Your visual system is lying, and making up content it thinks is there. You literally cannot see what you think you see.
Here's another one: You can see in color, right? (well, some of you can't. Sorry) You can see in color all throughout your vision, it's color everywhere?
Well, most of the cone cells (Which are sensitive to color) are in the fovea, a little spot in the center of your vision.
So outside of that center-of-vision spot, you have very little color perception. There's some but it's very limited compared to your main color vision. But I bet if you shift your attention to your peripheral vision right now, it's in color.
Your vision system is lying. It's remembering what colors things are and guessing and filling in the gaps. It's basically doing a Ted Turner colorization process on your non-central vision.
There's even weird effects like what's called "Action-specific perception". If you get a bunch of white balls of various sizes and toss them at people then ask them to estimate the size of the balls thrown at them, they'll have a certain size estimate, right?
Now repeat the experiment but ask them to try to hit the balls back with a bat, and suddenly all the estimates shift larger. They actually see the ball as bigger because they need to hit it. Their vision is exaggerating it to make it easier to see!
Which just goes to show, like I said, your vision is not a camera. Perfect accuracy is not one of its goals. It does not give any shits about "objective reality", that's not important.
What's important to the evolution of the visual system is any trick that helps you survive, no matter how "dumb" or "weird" it is.
So if you want an accurate visual representation of what things look like? Use a camera. Not your eyes.
In any case the original point was that while you might know this about your eyes being poor cameras that lie to you, you might still think that at least they're consistent, time-wise. They don't screw with your sense of time passing, just to make up for visual defects. NOPE!
If you can't get it don in time, turn back the clock and pretend you did. That's a perfectly good solution when you're the visual system.
BTW @/hierarchon reminded me of a neat trick with saccadic masking: go look in a hand mirror. No matter how close you bring it to your eyes, and how much you look around, you will never see your eyes move. You're blind during those movements. But you still think you are seeing.
She additionally pointed out that your phone's selfie-mode is NOT a mirror, and it has a slight delaye, so you can see your eyes moving in it.
And for fun, here's wikipedia's example of the blindspot. Stare at L with only your left eye, adjust the distance, and the R will disappear. You don't see "nothing" or "black", you see the background, because you expect to.
This is why laser damage your retina can be so insidious. Your visual system already can hide "holes" in your vision, what's one more to hid? So you damage a small spot of your retina and your visual system covers it up.
But since you didn't go "WELL THAT WAS TERRIBLE I BETTER TAKE BETTER CARE OF MY EYES" and stop fucking with lasers, you keep doing it. Eventually you accumulate so much damage that your visual system simply cannot manage hiding it all and your vision rapidly degrades.
The other reason lasers are so dangerous is that they don't necessarily trigger the same responses as regular incoherent light. Your pupil reflex is only triggered by some special cells in the center of your eye, so an off-center laser might not cause your iris to contract.
And infrared laser light is just as dangerous as visible laser light, but can't trigger your blink reflex. Your eyes automatically close when exposed to bright light, but they can't detect infrared light. Despite not seeing it, it still causes damage.
Anyway, back on how amazing and crazy your vision is: There was an experiment back in 1890 where someone wore glasses made with mirrors in them to flip their vision. After about 8 days, they could see just fine with them on. Their vision system had started "flipping" the image.
(I say flipping in quotes because it's not as simple as it started showing the pixels at the top row on the bottom row, cause our vision doesn't work like that) It only took them a few hours to get back to normal after taking these glasses off, though.
The last really fun part about this flipping experiment: your eyes already do it. Based on how our vision is wired, we should be seeing everything upside down.
We don't, but only because our visual system has had a whole life to adapt to this.
BTW, since a few people have brought it up: There's a great sci-fi novel by Peter Watts called Blindsight. In it humans encounter an an alien race they call Scramblers, who can move very fast and precisely, and they exploit saccades.
Because if they only move during saccades, we never see them moving. And since so much of our vision is based on just filling in what we think is there, if they stay out of the direct center of our vision, we'll just visually fill them in, like they were never there.
Check it out if you're into hard SF stories of first contact. It's got some really neat ideas about human vision, very unique aliens, the future of humanity in the face of perfect VR, and vampires. (Really, it has "vampires", while still being hard-SF)
BTW, remember how I said "vertebrate eyes" up there? Guess who has eyes which are wired forwards instead of backwards (have no blindspot), have an internal lens, and can even see polarization of light? Our good friends the Cephalopods!

Sight
by Dorothy Parker
Unseemly are the open eyes That watch the midnight sheep, That look upon the secret skies Nor close, abashed, in sleep;
That see the dawn drag in, unbidden, To birth another day-- Oh, better far their gaze were hidden Below the decent clay.

Looks and Glances
To commemorate my 6th anniversary of my blog on this app, I'm adding one of the senses! Sight! the other is Touch found here! These types of looks/ stares/ glances just hit differently, Come on. MINORS DNI
If you enjoy my prompts consider supporting my Ko-Fi and or if ya wanna put in a request just lemme know.
Soft/fluff
That soft look they give you post kiss, the look that just fills with love and adoration that just melts you.
The look that lingers, post kiss that just makes them melt.
When they smile that actually reaches their eyes and sparkles whenever they look at you whenever you talk, share, or even ramble about.
That mischievous and devious look they have before the split second before chaos ensues.
That soft but glowing emotion their eyes show when sharing a funny moment or laughing their heads off with tears in their eyes.
The sun/light reflecting from their eyes when admiring something far facing the light, casting them in an ethereal glow
Dazed and absolutely smitten with their cheeks warm and a large grin on their face with the occasional giggle here and there.
Scanning your face, memorizing your features, and letting a smile followed by butterfly kisses.
That pause when your eyes meet from a distance before they wrap up whatever they were doing before rushing to you with excitement.
Hard/Intense
Glazed over and obsessed, the look that ensures you will be out of breath and exhausted.
The intense stare that never leaves their line of sight, it always finds a way to just land on their s/o.
Distant and knowing, when they both are at a large distance away from each other, once they land their gazes at each other, a knowing nod is exchanged.
Post social gathering and both of you are alone, finally, and that stare for just a  minute before they dive in for that searing kiss.
Intense and raw emotions of rage and fury that'll make either their s/o or enemy tremble by the manic almost predatory gaze they hold before everything crumbles.
Labored and harsh breathing, nostrils flaring and pupils dilating, and gaze unfocused and slightly deranged, with adrenaline pumping through their veins while tightly holding their bloody weapon in their hands.
Focused and lasered into their task with their brows scrunched up and lips moving and mumbling out their thoughts.
Focused gaze trailing your every move and step as you go before you disappeared from their sight and they follow you where you left.
Teasing and mischievous gaze with slight mocking when your expression crumble and you warm up flustered but they just keep staring, making your face warmer and warmer as you try to back up. They're playing with you, and enjoying it.
Tearful/crying
Unfocused, that look that never stays with their s/o's gaze, their eyes that are searching, looking anything but focused, tears threatening to spill, words stammering and unclear.
Distant and unblinking, looking dazed and empty while tears threaten to fall/falling while everything moves around them but they will just be stuck there.
A mixture of Anger and sorrow while they cradle their s/o in their arms, tears falling like a waterfall as they scream in the high heavens of their anguish.
Pleading, begging for their love to be reciprocated while being on their knees, or holding their loved one's hand and whispering their pleas while tears build up and then fall when their loved one turns away and not reciprocating their love.
Anger slowly slipped away into disbelief and tears just immediately catching up and threatening to fall only for them to turn away and wipe aggressively at the offending salty eyeball sweat.
Blank tears slowly fall after waking up from a stressful day, when everything wrong happens happened and just waking up feels so tedious, or just waking up to do it all over again is their breaking point.
Looking up against the harsh rain and letting the rainfall carry their tears away.
Just staring at the floor while being told off and just stare and tears building up and blinking away but they do not dare to move or peep while their superior or someone they look up to goes on and on.
Defeat and betrayal spilling from their eyes while laughter and mocking words are thrown at them after being played and used by who they thought was their friend or companion.

The weather was melancholic that day; grey and depressed clouds were hanging too low on the sky, letting their tears wash over the city and making everyone that their tears touched sad and tired. People were walking around with rushed steps, and their umbrellas were open to stop the rain wetting them and their clothes.
You were one of them before you barged into your favorite coffee shop, your clothes and hair half-wet and umbrella broken. You placed the broken item at the entrance where it could drain all the water it gathered from the rain, and you walked inside.
The place was crowded because of the weather, but not as much as it was during a sunny day. People were tired, wet and done with their busy week as they sipped on their coffee, munched on their dessert. You could see some people dozing on their seats; the heat of the coffee shop making them sleepy after a busy work day. Honestly, you could relate, because it would have been amazing if you could nap here for half an hour, but that was the exact reason why you were getting coffee.
“Hey, Wanda,” you greeted the woman at the register. Wanda beamed at you with a wide smile. Her green eyes sparkled happily, and her hands immediately grabbed the usual size of coffee cup you go with. You smiled. “Yeah, Americano this time, though.” Wanda frowned a little as she scribbled your order and name before turning back to you.
“Is everything okay?” She asked. You’ve been coming here long enough for you and Wanda to be friends, and you were grateful for her friendship, if you had to be honest. You nodded.
“Just tired, and I have stuff I need to finish before it’s Saturday,” you explained. “So, Americano.” Wanda made a sad face and let out a broken sound. “I know, I’ll stick to green tea or chamomile on the weekend, don’t worry.”
“Good,” she murmured. You paid for your order and bid her goodbye. Just as you put your wallet in your bag again, your name was called by Pietro, her brother, and you took your coffee from him. Pietro sent you a friendly smile. His almost white hair was shining under the soft, yellow lights, and his boyish charm was fully on. Your lips curled upwards for a soft smile.
“Take care,” he said, and you nodded.
“I will, thanks, Pietro,” you murmured. He winked at you and started on another order. You held your coffee close to your chest, hands wrapped around it, and looked for an empty space.
The shop was almost full; every table had a friend group or a couple occupying it. Your eye caught an empty table at the very corner, and you hurried towards it before someone got to it first. You placed your bag and coffee, settling down on the chair and taking a deep breath.
This week’s work was somehow more tiring than all the other weeks. There were so much people to talk, so much meeting to attend, so much paperwork to fill, so much patience testing… You were glad it was weekend and had some time to reset before another tiring week started. You sighed. Grabbing your coffee your sipped from it slowly, being extra careful about not burning your tongue.
There was a reason why this coffee shop was your favorite: It was incredibly animal friendly. Anyone who was a pet owner could walk inside with their pets as long as they kept them by their sides, and cleaned their paws before leading them inside. You have already seen a handful of cats trotting around, jumping on tables and startling people for some scritches. There were a couple dogs, some were big and some were just puppies. The smile on your lips widened as your eyes followed the small creatures brought joy on people’s tired faces. Your eyes moved from animals to people, and you started watching people in the shop talking, laughing and smiling at each other when you saw him.
He was sitting at the other corner. He had a baggy, soft-looking knitted sweater on him. His face was clean shaven, and his hair was up in a cute bun. Some strands of it had fallen on his face, shadowing his beautiful features slightly. They didn’t stop you from seeing his knife-sharp jawline, his very pretty blue eyes and full, pink lips smiling at the animals winding around his ankles.
You watched him pet a puppy, watched him chuckle softly and give the animal a big smile before scooping them up on his lap to love them easily. The puppy yipped, its tail wagging madly as it got showered with love of that stranger man. Your tummy fluttered with a warm feeling, and you smiled. You could see how loving the guy’s petting was: His large palms were rubbing the dog’s belly, behind his ears and under chin while his long and thick fingers were playing with its paws sometimes. You heard the dog yip again and saw him dropping the animal down with a soft laugh. You chuckled into your coffee.
He heard you.
Lifting his head, his blue eyes immediately found yours, and he sent a wide smile at you. You felt the heat reaching up to your cheeks. Hesitantly lifting your hand, you waved at him once. He waved at you back, but his hand got attacked by a playful cat right behind him. He let out a surprised sound right before he got a lapful of cat. You laughed. He blushed and rolled his eyes.
You continued to sip your coffee while watching him playing and petting the cat on his lap, the book in front of him was long forgotten. You felt your body warm up at the sight. You’ve always found men attractive who were animal lovers, and there was something about him that just made you feel cozy and warm and soft. You weirdly loved the feeling.
Your phone chimed in your bag, and you scrambled to get it. It was a text message from your mother about tonight’s dinner, and you groaned inwardly. You downed the rest of your coffee, spared a longing look towards the handsome guy petting the cat and stood up. He noticed your movement and looked at you. He smiled, sending you a small goodbye wave, and turned his attention back to the cat. You sighed.
Some other day maybe, you thought. Maybe some other day I’ll ask him out.
That day wasn’t today, though, so you walked out of the shop and stepped into the rainy, muddy and melancholic day.
Throughout the whole day and night, the guy from the coffee shop occupied your mind. You kept thinking about how cozy looking he was, how loving he was towards the small creatures around him. Your mind kept replaying the time when he smiled at you. It got your tummy and heart flipping constantly.
It was hard to focus on your task of helping your mother cook. If she noticed your distracted self, she didn’t comment on it. You noticed that she gave you tasks where you wouldn’t be cutting or making yourself bleed, so you were thankful for her watchful eyes.
“Honey,” your mother called out softly. You hummed. “I got us fresh apples; can you make your apple pie?” You made an excited sound and looked where your mother was pointing at.
It was a whole basket of nicely grown apples, winking and calling to you.
“Of course!” You exclaimed. You loved baking, and your mother indulged in your hobby whenever she could. You quickly, but carefully, finished your task in hand before getting your hands on the apples. You picked one up and brought it to your nose, inhaling deeply.
It smelt like everything safe, cozy and love. You loved it.
“Where did you get them?” You asked your mother. She shrugged.
“There is this small market where they sell self-grown stuff,” she explained. “Normally there is an old guy who’s selling these, but recently, his son has been coming out to the market, and he said these were his first batch. I couldn’t stop myself, honestly.” You chuckled. Your mother, the ever-loving, big softie. You kissed her cheek. She grumbled, but there was a smile on her lips. “Get to it,” she grunted. You grinned and kissed her other cheek before moving on to bake your pie.
You were going to make your best apple pie for the honor of the guy’s first batch of apples. It only served them right.
