Whether you call it climate change or pollution, it鈥檚 still a series of policy decisions (deregulation). Deregulation that is disproportionately upheld by greedy corporations, red state Democrats, and is enforced overwhelmingly by Republican and Libertarian controlled legislatures.

In 2015 air pollution levels in Beijing were so intense, China received its first ever red alert. The smoggy conditions made buildings with LED screens look like they had futuristic holograms.

My friend is headed home from NYC cause the air is so bad. This picture was taken in Columbus Circle a few minutes ago. The miasma stinks of burned rubber and gives you an instant throat ache. My eyes burn as well. Here it鈥檚 just as bad; outside, there is an orange haze over everything. The pollution is caused by 400+ fires burning in Canada.

Old Internet Fridays #15: Smog Collectors - Kim Abeles

Smog Collectors - Kim Abeles
What鈥檚 this?
What's this website?
A summary of a series of works from 1987-2019 (maybe even later), by artist Kim Abeles. The title of the series "Smog Collectors" comes from the fact they are built of city smog. Objects are left out with stencils over them for months or more, slowly building up particulates into the ghostly images.
Kim Abeles is an interdisciplinary artist and professor based out of Los Angeles.
Okay, how did you find it?
I fancied reading a bit about lace this time around, actually. First I stuck "history of lace" and "history of lace neocities" into DuckDuckGo, and then it occurred to me that the edits page for wikipedia on "Lace" might be a ripe place to find academics who have a deeper interest on the subject. Kim Abeles is User Jeneleee on Wikipedia, and her user page brought me to this excellent portfolio site.
How鈥檚 it doing on Internet Archive?

Pretty good! I don't think it's changed too much from the March 19th save either!
What delighted you about it?
I mean, my god, the concept is just so vivid, right? Although the article leads with the political commentary by hearkening back to US presidents championing moves to industrial pollution, I personally find the smaller stuff way more impactful. The baby basket I took a snip of above. This ghostly, Banksy-esque image:

It all gives you a bit of a shiver, yeah? That's our air. Eugh.
