LORE ENTRY 3: The Angel Orchid

Built in bookshelves surrounded the door but in place of  the books that covered every other wall in that bananas ass shop were a series of old fashioned  mason jars. The jars themselves were dusty but friends, our keen eyes can confirm that each was  canned with care and precision. Fine lace and expensive bows were laid intricately to form  complex designs on the lids, and if our Driver had to give those designs a name, he would likely  choose the word ‘sigil,’ as this is what jumped to mind most readily when he saw them. The most interesting thing about the jars, and this was true of most jars he supposed, were not the lids but rather the contents. Inside was a viscous pink fluid, reminiscent of liquefied flesh, enveloping a crystalline bubble that can be seen clearly from all sides and inside the sphere is an orchid rooted to the base of the jar. In the first jar, beginning at the stem, the petals are cyanide blue fading into darker and darker hues until ending in black. A small bright flame burns in the  labellum mirroring the cyan, flickering just above the blackest part of the petals. The same is true for each proceeding jar, with the only difference being the shade of the base and flame. Finally, each jar had a label written in beautiful red script that swooped and curled meticulously like threaded needles. Some were old and faded so thoroughly that our Driver could not read them but the last appeared fresh and clear, stating: No. 0665, August 2021. The one before contained a  descending number and a date 50 years prior, and the trend continued: descending number, August, 50 years. There were hundreds of these jars and if the pattern did not deviate, and mind  you, he was surely no mathematician, but these dates had to stretch back tens of thousands of  years. But that couldn’t be right. Couldn’t be right at all.

Once a year, Thillia had a huge festival that spread well outside the boundaries of the tiny village. To hear the elders tell it, people would come from far and wide to spend a week there celebrating the gift of the gods once known as Soma and now known as illicit. Before I began searching, Soma was the foundation of our spiritual practice. The petals of the angel orchid would be placed in a burner in the center of the room and parishioners would sit silently, breathing deep and slow until every mind melded into one and allowed them to experience the truth of consciousness. The truth of the interconnected spirit that exists within us all. Now though, because of me, Soma is illegal and possession is punishable by death. 

BACKGROUND

The angel orchid is a plant used for religious purposes in the future during the time of our Archaeologist. It was initially created by R E D A C T E D as a way to collect the souls of previous overseers. Over time the plant evolved to propagate itself. This occurred after the discovery of the vault that held the orchids R E D A C T E D over and cared for for so long. During the excavation one of the jars broke and the orchid fell onto the earth below. The workers, to avoid further damage, retired for the day to reassess the situation with the financiers of the team.

Overnight the flower had rooted into the soil and sprouted numerous vines and offshoots. The orchid holds the will of the parasitic version of the Heart as well as the psychic energy of the overseer keeping watch at any given time. So, many believe that once these energies were released from the jar it immediately ensured its own survival.

So I've been feeling like shit ever since the new year started and the friend I was supposed to hang out with this week hasn't been responding (for reference, I haven't hung out with anyone since 2021 and have been trying and failing to meet up with people ever since)

EXCLUSIVE: Brownstone Shared Housing's San Francisco sleeping pod complex receives surprise visit from city inspectors over possible code violations

A group of young techies renting out 'sleeping pods' in downtown San Francisco received an unwelcome wake-up call when a team of inspectors came to document possible code violations they fear could shut down their fledgling operation, DailyMail.com can exclusively reveal. It was just last week that the city announced plans for the investigation, after seeing media coverage showcasing the pod housing complex that opened in June in the city’s SoMa neighborhood. DailyMail.com was there Monday when a three-member team from the Bay City's Planning and Building Department arrived at 10am armed with notepads and cell phone cameras. They headed up to the top floor where they poked their heads into the pods where several residents were still sleeping – one snoring aloud. 'Are these fastened to the floor or are they just standing?' one of the two male inspectors asked, referring to the rows of stacked bunks. Officials spent about half an hour checking out the facility and left after warning the co-owners of Brownstone Shared Housing, which operates the startup, that they may be forced to kick out their tenants. Kelly Wong, a senior planner, giggled as she quizzed the owners on what exactly the pod house is, and why they apparently haven't followed protocols to convert the former San Francisco Fire Credit Union building into this new use. Brownstone Shared Housing co-founders Christina Lennox and James Stallworth gave DailyMail.com a tour of their sleeping pod complex in San Francisco charging residents $700 in monthly rent Stallworth, who lives in the bunk below Lennox, started the business in 2021 based on their own prior experiences with 'housing insecurity' The double-stacked row of beds occupy just the top floor of a three-story property, which provides about 5,500-square-feet of living space that's all theirs 'We're just going to have to figure out what kind of use it is to see if it is permitted,' Wong said, smiling. Lennox and her business partner are attempting to alleviate California's housing crisis with their new venture that allows techies to rent out 'sleeping pods' out of a former bank in San Francisco. After the crew left, the co-owners were left anxiously awaiting the outcome of the internal review that could result in remedial action penalties and possible eviction. The following day the city posted a ‘Notice of Violation’ at the entrance, citing them for ‘work without permit’ and ‘unsafe building’ for installing 30 sleeping pods constituting an ‘illegal change of use.’ The Notice of Violation was posted on Tuesday citing the company for working without a permit and illegal change of use among other violations They were also cited for lesser offenses including replacing a toilet with a shower stall in the basement without the necessary permit. They were given 30 days to file an application for the change of use, 60 days to obtain that permit, and 90 days to complete any required work to gain compliance – or otherwise it could be shut down. The complex is already near capacity, with 28 of the 30 pods full. The units rent for $700 a month. The new pods, fitting no more than a twin sized mattress and just four feet high, may appear spartan, but DailyMail.com can reveal that the actual living quarters are quite cushy. When they crawl out of their beds the occupants get free rein over a three-story building downtown. DailyMail.com spoke with the co-owners and several of the residents at the site last week a few days before the inspection. 'This is our very own Pod Castle!' 'So whenever I feel stressed or anxious, I like to go inside and then just put on my headphones so I can listen to some music. 'Of course, it has a light so you can dim the lights and just chill out,' she continued. 'You can retrofit it any way you want because we have the hanger bars and mirror and everything. So I like to do my skincare routine in here.' They sometimes crawl into each others pods – they say to watch movies on their laptops. But one thing they insist they don't do is bed together. They think that would send a bad message to their housemates who sleep just outside their room and are discouraged from having overnight guests. 'I sleep in my own bed, so it's not like weird for anyone else,' Lennox said, sitting with her legs dangling from her mattress. Their housemates, located outside their door, similarly don't seem to mind sharing a double-stacked row of pods with 28 people. Many barely sleep as they pursue their own AI tickets out of here. 'I'm focused on work,' said Farhan Gilani, 33, stretched out on a velour love seat, typing away on his MacBook as he reached out to investors for his AI streaming marketplace. 'Everyone's working on their startup and collaborating with each other,' said Gilani, who moved here from New York City just last week. 'There's quite a lot of creative, entrepreneurial energy here right now. It captures the Silicon Valley moment well.' The residents couldn't help but recognize their own sweet deal, especially when they look outside to see the dozens of homeless people sleeping on the plaza and surrounding streets, many strung out on drugs or mentally ill. Residents of the pod home tell DailyMail.com say that they feel for those folks, even if they aren't about to invite them inside - even if their rent was taken care of. 'They'd probably come in here and destroy the f*ing place and smoke crack,' Lewis told DailyMail.com. Stallwell said tenants don't have to worry about that. 'That's not necessarily our goal with what we're offering here,' he said. 'Because people who are chronically homeless have needs that go beyond housing. Putting them with other people without the infrastructure in place, that's not our product.' But doing their part to cure homelessness is still their ambition. SoMa Week 2021 - day 2

Okay, so this is cheating because I didn’t technically write this for SoMa Week. It’s a deleted scene from a bed-sharing trope WIP that I’ll finish in the next thousand years, maybe. The tone of this scene didn’t quite match up with the rest of the story, but this scene is so exactly to my tastes as a hurt/comfort reader that I still wanted to share it.

So here’s a little something-something for day 2: Protect.

There’s only one bed, but Maka unquestionably gets it because Soul can’t bear to see Maka lying crumbled on the ground anymore today. Or tomorrow. Or ever again. She’s sleeping now, fuck she needs it, and Soul is hiding in the bathroom because there’s nowhere else to go.

He needs to clean this place up before they get another fine for destroying a hotel room, but Soul’s still perched on the edge of the bathtub, struggling to catch his breath. He managed to keep his hands steady as he patched up Maka just an hour before, but now he couldn’t get them to stop shaking if he tried.

He thought she was dead. He thought she was dead.

He didn’t make it out of the battle completely unscathed either. There’s a thick piece of gauze taped to his cheek that will have to be changed later, and he’s almost positive he fucked up his shoulder in a way that will need actual medical attention when they get back to the Academy, but he can’t even fathom caring about himself when all he can picture is Maka lying on the ground, not moving, while the kishin loomed over her still form. Lying on the ground almost didn’t seem to cut it, because the ragdoll position Maka was in could never be mistaken as intentional. She was tossed on the ground in an unnatural heap and Soul doesn’t even remember the resulting skirmish between himself and the kishin, just the horrible, bloodcurdling thought that Maka was dead and it was his fault.

The paralysis hex that had been placed on her had been lifted as soon as the battle was over, but that didn’t stop horrible thoughts rolling through Soul’s mind like thunder. Maka could have died. He could have watched it happen. He wasn’t able to stop it, just act after the fact.

The ribbons of pink swirling down the sink drain are enough to make him sick. Maka’s alive, but the wounds she suffered from this one time that Soul failed to protect her outweigh just about every other bad thing in the world. Soul’s breath hitches dangerously high, and his sight begins to blur.

He doesn’t notice Maka entering the bathroom until she’s right in front of him. He can’t get his breathing under control, so he can barely get out that he’s sorry if he’s woken her.

“Hey, it’s okay,” Maka says, but she can’t mean that with the swelling on her cheek and the cuts covering her arms and the way she’s limping just to get closer to him.

He doesn’t want to cry in front of her, worrying her is the last thing he wants to do right now, but the tears are rolling down his face anyway as he squeezes his eyes shut and shakes his head.

She wraps her arms around his head and pull him close to her, letting him thump his head against her collarbone.

“Everything’s okay,” she repeats, brushing her hands through his hair, soothing him when he doesn’t deserve it. “I promise, everything’s okay.”

He lets himself be soothed because he can’t breathe without her. Her stubbornness and her stupid battle strategies and her bad attitude are everything and he can’t stand that he almost lost all of that.

“Seeing you like that was fucking scary,” he murmurs into her. He doesn’t want to say it, but it needs to be said.

“I know,” she says quietly. God, she’s probably still tired. He tries to pull away, thinking if he rubs his eyes and looks away that maybe they can just pretend he didn’t have a panic attack and he can still be cool and aloof like always. But Maka doesn’t let him off the hook, bending down a little so she’s looking him right in his red-rimmed eyes. “C’mon, you need sleep.”

He lets himself be led by her back to the room, but almost throws a fit when Maka guides him to the only bed.

“No, there’s no way I get the bed today, not just because I had some crying fit, not when you’re hurt—”

She pushes him onto it anyway, still pretty goddamn strong for someone as hurt as she is. “Lay down.”

“Maka, I can’t do this.”

“Yes, you can.” She paces to the other side of the bed and flicks off the light. With the shades drawn and the lights out, Soul can just barely make out her silhouette as she returns to the bed, pulling the covers back and slotting herself in next to him.

The air feels very still around him. With as little jarring movements as possible, Soul lays down in bed beside her. His only option is to sleep on his left shoulder, seeing as his right still feels like its grinding around in its socket, so Soul faces away from her to avoid further discomfort to both of them.

He can feel the awkwardness between them, but he also feels so bone-deep tired that he’ll have to give in to sleep despite the weirdness of the sleeping arrangement. His eyelids are growing heavier and his mind is growing cloudier, and it’s right when he’s on the edge of sleep that he feels Maka’s forehead press in between his shoulder blades. A heat-seeking missile in need of warmth, he assumes, until one her arms wraps around his middle until she’s all but pressed against his entire back.

She doesn’t say anything, which is probably for the best since any comforting words might make him feel worse. But her small hand bunched in his t-shirt makes his heart thump a little faster and his thoughts feel a little clearer.

He shouldn’t be allowed to feel this warm and protected, not with his shitty performance today and the new scars on Maka to prove it. But he allows himself to be comforted anyway, because the feeling of Maka holding onto him is enough to quell the storm still raging in his mind. They fit together pretty well, despite her knobby elbows and his long torso and the fact that this probably isn’t even a queen-sized bed.

The smallness of the bed is the only reason Soul can come up with for Maka staying this close. For him threading his fingers through hers. For her pressing her mouth to the nape of his neck. The heat from her melts the tension from his muscles, and the beat of her heart is music for his soul.
