Zoey Deutch is such a DOUCHE in this film! Get it? I’ll see myself out.
Plot: A misguided young woman who is desperate for friends and fame fakes a trip to Paris to update her social media presence. A terrifying incident takes place in the real world, which becomes a part of the imaginary trip and offers all she wants.
It’s always difficult to watch a film where you evidently dislike the main protagonist, as how can you engage with them and root for them to succeed if they are intolerable and generally a bad person. Would that make for an enjoyable watching experience? Well, Not Okay answers that, as the leading character Danni Sanders played by Zoe Deutch is very much a narcissist who only thinks of herself, and keeps digging herself into this endless hole of lies and deceit, all to boost her success and fame, not caring much about if anyone gets hurt. Even if she does momentarily get a sense of consciousness, she swiftly brushes it off under the pretence of ‘a numb feeling’. As the film progresses, Danni does not grow as a character. There is no redemption arc or a way of seeing her learn something from her mistakes. She is a flawed personality, so in turn as the movie goes on, you as the audience member end up wanting to see her fail. You want her to get caught. You don’t seek to see her find a happy ending, nor does she deserve to. So the enjoyment factor comes in witnessing her inevitable downfall. 
Zoey Deutch panders towards the idea of making Danni an uncomfortable presence. Not in a creepy horror way, but more so by presenting the character as the definition of the term - cringe. Each choice she makes, each awkward expression she shows, all make you as the viewer constantly feel second hand embarrassment for her. She makes so many blatantly silly decisions, inevitably making the outcome worse for herself in the end, but also there is an element of social commentary in that society for a good while accepts and believes all her ridiculous stories, even though a simple fact check could have caught her out from the beginning. Again though, the film’s central social commentary on the way we perceive things on the media, and how we believe or become fans of online influencers, or we feel the need to make a difference so to speak in the world by simply reacting to something online, it’s all old news. Like it’s good for this movie to address it, but also its a known thing. Then again, a certain joke in the film regarding Snapchat creating a ‘beret filter’ for users to have to show their respects to the movie’s fictional Paris bombing catastrophe, you can look back at real life events and again, social media outlets have done that type of thing before. Not ‘beret filters’ per se, but you know what I’m saying. My point is, the movie is stating society is stupid and gullible, and I agree. And yes, I am aware I am part of society, so am aware what that makes me.
Not Okay is a good watch overall boosted by a stellar turn from Deutch, but in turn the feature tries to act like it has edge and bite, but the message its giving isn’t as original as it may think. Also, at times the movie tries to be funny, but those jokes do again result more so in second hand embarrassment than laughing along with it. Where the film does shine is when Danni comes across Rowan (Mia Isaac), another influencer who happens to have gone through an actual travesty and is more earnest and meaningful in her fight to make the world a better place. It’s in their relationship where Danni begins to reveal her softer side, realising her previous acts were all done to hide her sense of loneliness and lack of belonging, and momentarily you begin to wonder if she can indeed change, and this serves as a welcome change for what is otherwise a despicable person. And while seeing Dylan O’Brien pop up as a trashy, consistently-high Pete Davidson-esque influencer is fun at first, the character feels like a missed opportunity that is more of a MacGuffin for Danni’s story than anything else. He’s no more than a sight gag really, so O’Brien fans, calm your horses and go watch Love & Monsters instead.
