please tell me about your trash vamp tristan -candy pop anon

Alright buckle in coz I'mma tell y'all about my shitty vampire pretending to be a human pretending to be a shitty vamp. Tristan is the manifestation of a dumpster fire—and if there is a dumpster on fire it was most likely his doing.

((LONG POST IS LONG. I’MMA INFODUMP ABOUT MY SON.))

I believe I have a post or two that has dialogue from him, in which he’s not his usual self. He’s got some profound wisdom hidden in him somewhere, and some repressed sad from his life, usually buried down until he connects with literally anyone on a deeper level than: “Tris, why the fuck is there a skeleton in your cupboard?”

I'mma come back to Profound Wisdom and Repressed Sad later because let me first get y'all to the subject of Tristan’s cupboard skeleton.

Now, when I say trash vamp I mean that he’s not really a good guy. Like, he’s not evil, but he’s not good either. He’s a mess whose day job ((night job, considering he’s a nocturnal vamp)) is being a Certified Spook. It’s in his job description to cause just enough chaos that the supernatural is plausible in case anyone fucks up their cover, but still make it easy for the supernatural to be denied or debunked by humans. He maintains that stupidly specific balance.

Shitty Vamp = he’s got a lot of debilitating, stereotypical vampire traits that makes it super hard for him to do his job when the sun’s out

His cover is he’s a human from Ireland ((which is true, he was born in Ireland who knows how long ago)) but he’s pretending to be a stereotypical vampire from Romania ((half true due to him first being stationed in Romania due to his eldest adopted brother)).

So, technically he’s a supernatural government worker. But, again, he’s a fucking mess. There’s shit he’s repressed, or has been helped in repressing. There’s a lot of advantages to being adopted into a magic family. But there’s also a lot of disadvantages to being adopted into a magic family that descends from a hell realm.

So’s, he wasn’t raised with the best morals, and with some abstract-ish laws from a realm that birthed The Boogeyman and The Big Bad Wolf and Death’s Daughter and the Mother of Shadows. But he was also able to complete all requirements from two foreign governments and their realms to be able to have the job he does. So even if he doesn’t have the best morals—depending on your own standards, honestly—Tristan does adhere to local laws. Mostly.

Which brings us to Cupboard Skeleton aka F??? aka Frederick aka Tristan-doesn’t-remember-the-guys-name-other-than-it-starts-with-F-and-he-was-an-ass-in-life-so-Frederick-it-is

Frederick McCupboardSkeleton is the skeleton that someone—Tristan doesn’t remember if it was him or not—shoved into his cupboard in between all the cereal boxes and liquor bottles. He has slowly become a cursed skeleton since his death. Tristan’s a vampire, he doesn’t have the power or magic to banish an angry spirit or seal non-human bones to trap him. But he can contain him and keep an eye on him until he figures out who this guy was and why he (Tristan) was involved with his death (Tristan assumes). Thus he’s cursed and Tristan doesn’t keep him all in one piece.

So if ya spot Tristan anywhere outside his apartment or his eldest brother’s house, you can assume that there’s a skull in his bag and that it’s Frederick and you’d be goddamn right. They’re a pair until Tristan figures shit out OR Frederick enacts whatever revenge plot(s) he’s got stewing in his skull.

Tristan’s the one that’s usually shit on publicly and openly out of his brothers.

Ji’s the eldest and raised them all. He the one you truly have to look out for but no one’s gonna say shit to his face or even in his general direction. He’s That Guy. He’s old magic and hellfire. He’s got a reputation older than human civilization.

Isidore is biologically Ji’s little brother. Just basically runs Ji’s Estate, acts like an assistant, keeps tabs on Tristan whenever he’s home and will watch Frederick’s skull. Because he’s actually a witch that can deal with restless spirits. Not as intense as any of his brothers or his mother. The Calm One.

And the youngest is Luca. He’s a werewolf. No one truly knows if he was born that way or infected or born from infected parents. His origins are as unknown as Tristan’s. Luca was practically a baby when their mother brought him home. Just as traumatized and repressing just as much as his vamp brother. But Luca is Dealing with it, because he’s the Most Responsible of the four. Some-fuckin-how. (Izzy’s The Calm One, but don’t think he won’t go off the rails. You just won’t know until it’s too late.)

Luca works as head of personal security for the Song Siblings—who go between all the realms really. But they’re usually on Earth working with humans so he’s the closest to Tristan—also closest in age. Luca sees most of the shit Tristan ends up doing. He’s the first to point out Frederick’s bones to Tristan, actually.

But as much as he shit-talks Tristan’s bad habits—mainly mixing up the milk bottles and blood bottles and liquor bottles in his fridge when the vamp is having cereal in his presence because Luca can smell all the things—he does it out of concern. Tristan isn’t indestructible, and even as a vampire, the amount of alcohol and cigarettes he goes through a day has to be doing something to his body. Also the sugar in his favorite cereals can’t be mixing well with the blood Tristan actually has to consume to sustain himself. If sugar affects the being that blood came from, it’s probably doing even more shitty things to his brother. He’s the one that will fight you then and there if he catches you. (Ji causes paranoia because what the fuck is he up to and wHEN, and no one ever suspects Izzy until After the Fact.) ((You just can’t shit on Tristan just to shit on him.))

Tristan got fucked up by his birth family, and then by being raised in an environment where he only had one source of sustenance and it was heavily laced with things that are addictive to vampires. Addictive in ways it fucked him up even more. Namely magic, but There’s More. It’s a Big Concern for everyone who knows, because ya can’t exactly synthesize that shit. There’s More changes anyone who’s exposed to it long enough, and Tristan’s been eating it since he was a babby vamp. He doesn’t have much choice but to live off it and he absolutely hates it.

Tristan has that habit of trying to kill something inside him he can’t see or remember. He’s picked up the habit of eating junk food that’s almost pure sugar, smoking, drinking anything. He’s a fucking neon sign of reasons why preternatural mental health is A Thing they should be researching more. But also the poster boy of: We should be taking a vampire’s physical health more seriously than Just-Feed-Them-Blood.

But catch Tristan passing on some profound wisdom to school kids and anyone that reminds him of Luca. Partly because he feels like a shitty brother so here kid have some advice. Also because Ji won’t let Tristan suspend too much time with either of his kids, even with Ji’s son being 20-something now. Like, he gets it, and he’s not proud of it being that, but he’s not really changing because he has Luca and the Song Siblings. He has his friends in Louisiana. He’s buddies with Willy Shakes--

Now I’m spewing all this bullshit because a lot of it comes from a story I scrapped where Luca’s a teenager and Ji has the one kid and you meet the Song Siblings before they’re ever—Celebrities, I guess??

Because Tristan was worse. He was the brother you absolutely hated. There, you had the rest of the brothers who followed the law and then Tristan who was headed towards a Dead End. But when it came down to it, he was there for Luca. Because he was the only one there. Tristan risked himself for this baby werewolf and his friends.

And that’s where my tag in that one post comes in. Where it ties in with my dialogue posts.

It has to do with Tristan watching sad scared little witch Celia Song growing up confident-in-herself Song Seonmi.

Tristan has a habit of flirting with everything, mainly dating ghosts so far, so he has no fucking clue when she got under his skin. And as much as Luca tells him to back off his friend (and boss) he really can’t be mad that Tristan dropped The Worst of his habits to keep seeing her. Because the first time she walked out of his life completely was a disaster until Tristan figured out that she would keep disappearing before he ever reached her again so long as he was being a complete bastard. Because when she left she took her brother and his own with her. And he really didn’t want to go back to living on lockdown with Ji—or worse, with his mother in the hell-realm. Isolation does shit to you.

So the Tristan you see in the story is a better off vamp than the one from Alex and Celia’s story. That was. . . Bad. As in that story probably won’t ever see the light of day because I cried every time I sat down to write that Tristan. Like, maybe I’ll incorporate bits and pieces into other stories, and most of the TrisMi growth is written in their interactions. But I just can’t do it, yo. I love my trash vamp because there’s hope to him and just watching the change in him as he grows in the background of everyone else’s stories. I can’t write him being an Absolute Asshole.

What sealed the deal was when I wrote about Tristan losing control because of There’s More in his diet and Seonmi—still going by Celia at that point—does her damned best to try and snap him out of it. Like, my girl had hope in him and didn’t give up so I couldn’t either. Now here we are.

Tristan is as On Brand as I’ll ever be. Horrible Past, Trauma, Found Family, Walking Shitpost, Angst, and Hope. He don’t really know what he’s doing but he’s still going.

I mean yeah, I can get real deep about Tristan as a moment’s notice—i.e. this whole post because I’ve been in my feels tonight. Like, Tristan will do a bunch of shit to comfort himself. Dumpster fires. Speaking at preternatural schools (like cryptid academy I brainstormed with @ladymaliwan). Setting out food and drinks for Frederick’s skull because he feels awkward leaving none for the skull when he has his own.

Catch Tristan smokin cigs with the skull in a dumpster, both wearing sunglasses. Find trash vamp poppin out like Oscar the Grouch for advice. It’s not always good or profound, but he always got something. But also save him—because he’s sensitive to the sun as a ginger nocturnal vamp raised in a dark hell-realm, later an cold fog realm where a sun doesn’t really exist. Toss him in your trunk or a body bag to help him get home.

Dear lord, I can keep going and dump everything about him but this is long as it is. He’s one of my oldest characters. I created him before Isidore and Luca, but not too long after Ji and their mother—and Ji and their mom are fucking old. As in I’m finding scraps of paper where they’re mentioned. But it’s also telling that I’ve written Tristan on my blog more than any of my other OC’s for an original story.

NOTE : The song I use the lyrics of is ‘Knocking on your heart’ by Maggie Lindemann. Also fight me but Junhee is the kind of person to save people’s contact as cheesy nicknames. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Seonmi took a deep breath. It was now or never. She went on the stage with her guitar in her hands. She cleared her throat on the mic and suddenly all the eyes of the small bar were on her and she felt her nerves rising. Until she met the pair of eyes she had come to adore - Park Junhee's. When she found his eyes and saw him giving her that soft smile of his, her breath caught in her throat and she felt herself smile. She felt like she could do anything as long as he would be smiling at her like that and it scared her sometimes. But not now, now wasn't the time.

"Hi everyone. This is my first time here and I'm both excited and nervous. But I hope you'll like the song I'm going to play. It's a self-composed and self-written song and it's called 'knocking on your heart'. And it's not dedicated to anybody before any one of you hollers."

Her last comment got a few chuckles out of the people and with a few claps of encouragement, she strummed the first note.

She finally strummed the last chord and the whole room came to life with loud sounds of applause. She hadn't realised she had closed her eyes while singing and when she opened them, Junhee was not there where she first saw him.

She frantically scanned the crowd when she heard her name being shouted. Loudly. She turned towards the voice and saw him near the stage cheering her name and waving his hands like crazy to get her attention. A laugh escaped her lips and she thanked everyone and went down the stage.

To him.

He hugged her as soon as she was in his range and a sigh escaped her lips. He was chattering away while she was getting lost in his smell, the cologne she had come to love.

"..and that was so good Seonmi! I know I was mad that you didn't let me hear it before and I kind of still am but you did so great and I'm so proud!"

She just laughed and tried to compose her face into something less sickly-in-love since he was pulling back to look at her. It was short lived though since as soon as he had her in arms length, he squished her cheeks and laughed - happiness clear on his face.

She smiled and pushed his hands away from her face which he nonchalantly kept on her shoulder and she rolled her eyes. The concept of Personal space was alien to Park Junhee, not that she was complaining.

He pulled her towards a table slightly to the back of the bar and left her to get them drinks. A few minutes later he came back with beer for both of them. The next person after her was singing but they were busy talking to each other.

Her eyes have always been for him anyway.

"You know that guy at the bar? The blond one with the black jacket? He is interested in you. He has been looking at you and also asked me about you when I went there." Junhee told her and she shrugged.

"For a smart person, you're really dense in these matters." He said, staring at her hard.

She stared back at him, expressionless and said, "it's alright. Happens to the best of us."

Although internally she was rolling her eyes at his stupidity and cursing at him for being dumb himself.

Suddenly his phone rang and she saw it said 'Babe'. He just silenced the phone and she raised her eyebrow at him.

"You know your phone has been buzzing for a while now. What's wrong. Why are you ignoring her?" She asked and he sighed, rubbing his bridge of nose slightly.

By her, Seonmi meant Junhee's girlfriend of 5 months now. Lim Nari.

"She's mad at me. I had promised her to accompany her to some party tonight but your show suddenly came up and..well I am here aren't I?"

"You should have gone with her. You promised her first." She tried to make him understand. Nari was his girlfriend, not her.

"And what? Leave you alone when you perform on a stage for the first time? What sort of a best friend would I be?" He said and when she tried to argue more, made a sign for her to shut up. And she did.

His phone rang again. And he silenced it again.

"Pick up next time. Don't let this go on for too long." She said and he nodded, running his hands through his hair.

"But Junhee.." she started and he looked up at her.

"Babe? Seriously?" She asked and he shrugged.

"She insisted on it." He said and she nodded.

"So what's my name saved as?" She asked and she saw his face slightly turn read. Perks of having a friend who not only gets flustered easily but also shows it on his face.

"What is it?" She insisted and he just ignored her. So she called him since his phone was on the table only.

His phone rang.

It read 'Life ❤️'.

He ended the call as soon as it appeared, his face completely red now and she couldn't help but coo at him.

Still red, he looked her in the eyes and with all seriousness, said, "well you are."

Her heart quite literally stopped.

Was..was he saying what she thinks he was?

Was there more to what he just said?

"You're my best friend after all."

And she sighed. She knew it was too good to be true. And even though she felt a slight pain in her chest, she managed to cover it up with a smile.

And then his phone was ringing again and she was shooing him out to talk to her.

To Nari, his girlfriend.

Because she was his best friend. And that was all, wasn't it?

The bell rang and a half asleep Seonmi sat up in her bed to make sure it was actually her bell.

Another bell made her get out of bed, groaning of course and trudge to the door to find a tipsy and tired Chan carrying a totally drunk Junhee on with an arm around his waist.

"Sorry we woke you up noona but he just won't come home. He wanted to see you." Chan said and dragged Junhee inside, making him sit on the couch where he quickly laid down.

"Sorry noona." He said and she waved him off.

"What happened? Why is he so drunk?" She asked.

Chan ran a hand through his hair. "His girlfriend broke up with him."

She nodded and looked at the drunk man on her couch, shifting to find a comfortable position and sighed.

"I hope he figures out who he really likes now Noona." Chan said and when she gave him a surprised look, he just chuckled and left.

Locking her door after Chan left she came back to see Junhee sitting up on the couch and he gave her a huge drunk smile when he saw her.

"What is it?" She asked.

He waved at her to come close and when she did, he pulled her down on the couch and before she could protest, she had his head in her lap and she couldn't help the chuckle that passed her lips.

She started running her hand through his hair and he smiled, snuggling in her stomach and she laughed because it was ticklish.

A while passed when she finally asked,"What happened. Why did you break up?"

"I didn't. She did."

"Why?"

"She said she deserved better. Better than someone crazily in love with his best friend."

She froze at the answer until he pushed his head in hand and she started running her hands through his hair again, his words going around in her head.

The next morning found Junhee up with a killer headache and sight of Seonmi as soon as he opened his eyes because apparently, drunk him likes sleeping in her lap and she lets him. He got up and fetched a glass of water for himself and took an Advil from her kitchen. He was trying to think of what all happened the day before when he saw her stir awake.

And then it clicked.

He told her he was in love with her.

"Oh you're up. How are you feeling?" She asked while stretching slightly and the slight skin that peeked out from where her top lifted up made him look away.

"I should get going. I have an important class." He said when she called her name.

"Do you remember anything that happened yesterday?" She asked.

She wanted to know. He knew.

"Not really. I must have drank too much." He lied through his teeth and saw how her face fell slightly. But he was scared.

"Why did you drink so much?" She asked.

"We broke up. Me and Nari."

"Why?"

"Things just didn't work out between us."

"No noona. He left an hour ago. But you can wait for him here?" Chan said from the door and she said no adding how she'll look for him elsewhere and left.

"You need to talk to her. At Least answer her call. It's been three days hyung. I can't keep Lying to her." Chan said to Junhee who was laying on their couch with his face down and he saw him nod slightly.

But he also knew he wouldn't do anything.

He had to take the matter in his own hand now.

"Can you bring over the notebook hyung please? I'll meet you at the cafe at 1! Thanks!"

Junhee sighed over the one sided phone call that happened with him and then he went to Chan's room and after picking up the notebook, left their house.

"Noona, I'll meet you at the cafe at 1:10. I know your class gets over at 1. See ya!"

She heard the voicemail left on her phone and sighing, picked up her books to go to the cafe across from their university.

She entered the cafe and as if automatically, her eyes zeroed in on Junhee sitting alone at a table and suddenly everything clicked in her head.

It was all Chan's plan!

She went and sat in front of him and saw how his eyes widened when he registered who it was. Before any of them could say anything though, a tray with two coffees was placed on the table and they looked up to see Chan grinning at them.

"Talk stuff out like adults now okay? Hyung, stop avoiding noona. Noona, hyung remembers everything he said to you when drunk. Talk now! And hyung don't you dare come home without her being your girlfriend!" He said Quickly and left while Junhee was about to curse at him but then he just looked at his coffee when he saw her eyes on him.

"Why didn't you talk to me for the past 3 days?"

It had been two hours since Chan had come back home from setting them up. When he heard the PIN being entered of the apartment he shared with Junhee, he looked at it excitedly until a visibly upset Junhee entered. When he directly started to go to his room, Chan stopped him to ask what happened.

"Well you said to not come home without making Seonmi my girlfriend so I'm gonna pack and leave okay?" And Junhee kept walking until Chan called him again.

"What do you mean? Did she say no? But why?" Chan looked so close to crying that Junhee just started laughing and Chan heard the main door open and a grinning Seonmi entered with a box in hand.

"Couldn't you have held it in longer?" She yelled at Junhee who just pointed at Chan's face which looked really confused now.

"You were right, he looked so lost." Junhee said among tears and Chan finally figured what happened and yelled loudly.

"I HATE BOTH OF YOU SO MUCH!" And the couple in question just laughed.

"Don't hate us, we got cake!" Seonmi said with Junhee's arm wrapped around her waist and even Chan couldn't stay mad for long.

started out as a small fashion channel which grew pretty big. she was known for her bubbly but snarky reviews & the expensive items she featured

well-meaning concerns turned quite quickly into vitriolic hate & she took a break from fashion blogging ... to food blogging !!

keeping her personal life out of this new venture really helped her to regain her footing & confidence, giving her that boost to start anew & on her own — in starden !!

setting her roots down on the islands, she started her personal food & fashion critic website, as well as working at the gazette as their lifestyle editor, dabbling in everything else ( music, art, travel !! )

although her brand is built on the finer things in life, she’s still a gen z kid who definitely had an emo phase !! may or may not have a ~secret tiktok~, who knows

seonmi’s kind of a bubbly ditz, way too optimistic with no tact, cute & she knows it !! gets a lil flirty sometimes, she can’t help it, romance is just always on her mind ...

total social butterfly, she’s got no problem meeting people & making friends, but getting close to them ? she hasn’t really hacked it yet :c

to closer friends, her snark & stubbornness are much more evident. self-deprecating jokes are out, self-conceited jokes are in !!

pov: your name is lilia jeong and you snitched on your brother when you were 16 for a drunken mistake that happened 2 years ago which got him kicked out of the house. you feel nonstop guilt<3

imma be honest, the overall relationship / their family dynamic is terrible and the only person in her family she is close to anymore is her mom. even then, it’s a struggling relationship that is out of more loyalty than actual love. dad could basically be dead to her she has no loyalties to him even if she fakes it. the only person who she has unconditional love for at this point is avery and even that is beyond messed up as you all know. but yeah<3 bennie’s task has other family info too ok we tried our best i hate their parents so mf bad

iris jeong (mother)

kind of the … head of the family in a sense. she was always the one making decisions, in charge of the business, and the drug / cartel business actually came from her side of the family. kind of put their dad in a loveless marriage because it was more something that was arranged to keep a plausible cover for their family. while growing up their mom kind of gave avery more of the attention because he was the one which was supposed to take over the family business … yah you know the rest. anyways. lilia always had a suspicion that their mom never cared for her or didn’t appreciate her as a daughter and when she started babying avery … well :cursed: that kind of just grew and planted seeds within her that eventually led to her snitching on him. realizing she did this to prove something to their mom and i don’t like that ! her relationship with her mom is simply complicated<3333 and by complicated i mean just terrible . ever since avery was kicked out of the family, yes it was lilia’s fault myob, their mom basically had to condition her in 2 years to take over … what she literally did to avery for 18 years she had to do in 2. so when i say miss girl gave lilia everything she got and fucked her up without any reprieve ! well she did ! she has this weird loyalty to their mom because she was basically told to for years, but then at the same time hates her for the shit she made her do since she was 16. like has this inherent need to ruin their mom but knows that she wouldn’t be able to without some kind of severe push. like she has had dreams about what she could do with her life if their mom just wasn’t involved. yes she has mommy issues i don’t want to talk about it. also shes a cap sun gemini moon that is frankly enough besties. tobias jeong (father)

i hate complacent men so bad<3 their dad was the nice guy … science teacher type who literally kind of wanted to give them everything their mom couldn’t. he tried but he was basically a doormat to their mom’s tyrannical rampage of life. bill nye wannabe if you will. anyways ! he was the one who would also give them something to look forward to - literally has a jeep that they would go on random drives in throughout the year just to talk about how terrible their mom was and he would agree. but he did nothing about it do you see why i hate complacent men now<3 yeah. lilia’s relationship was more distant with their dad mostly because i think she just kept having an obsession with proving herself to their mom that she never tried to do the same with him. but she loved art … like specifically weird niche art but she still liked it KLNSDFLKNSDFL you know those weird museums that have exhibits that made no sense yeah he would take her to those. but then when the entire avery thing happened, their relationship turned for the worst. context wise, after avery left lilia got into a huge argument with both her mom and dad because she never expected it to end with him being kicked out - well too late for that now ! the entire argument was her asking for her mom to rethink what she did, but when her dad basically kept telling lilia to let it go and for it to happen, she began to resent him for everything he was. in her head he’s a spineless man who can’t stand up for a single thing he believes in. she was 16 and stupid when she did what she did, but their dad really has no excuse so their dad is literally dead to her<3 she will be nice to him and patient but that’s as far as her loyalty goes to him. aqua sun cancer moon once again explains it all. avery jeong (brother)

they were … so close. ridiculously close growing up. they were basically that cliche of we really don’t have anyone but we have each other. like when they were kids he would always be the one to clean up her messes because she always had a tendency to take on more than she could handle. if you read bennies task then you know they would go to orchards together because they are . rich like that . anyways pt 2 of that is how they would go home, cut up the fruit, and then just … have a whole food fight with each other where they both just get sticky and ruin the kitchen because of it. he ends up taking the blame for it and has to clean but she’s just sitting on the counter watching him and purposely making it difficult so he has to give her more fruit :\ that’s how close they were - like really would do anything for each other. avery was kind of her person growing up, but then we bring it back to their mom who just made her feels SO inadequate to him. it wasn’t even purposeful from his end, but she started to almost like … resent him slightly ?? for being given more control which again wasn’t his fault. she’s 2 years younger than him but she had this image of herself in her head that was a lot grander than she actually was. but we all know what she did<33 after that she like … her parents basically lied about some of the stuff avery did growing up and by her parents i mean her mom so that already complicates it.

after avery left she kept trying to fight for him to come back but it was met with a mom who refuses to be told she was wrong and a complacent doormat dad, so they literally lied to her for her to let him go. she is so … guilt ridden about what she did to him. like even before she found out about the lies her parents told her, etc. she carried so much guilt about it since she was 16 that she basically repressed. before yale and when she still lived with her parents, she would go through random boxes in the basement and find the guitar he used to play songs for her with - it had their initials in it from when they were kids inscribed on the back. she even tried to play a song but her nails kept getting caught on the strings. overtime she attempts to call him and is always met with with his voicemail, but she finally leaves one that just says “hi …” before hanging up. that’s the last thing she said to him before they saw each other at yale again. and she’s tried to call him again more than once, but eventually gave up. maybe her doing that was self serving because of her guilt but more than anything she just missed him.

as of now it’s just a really awkward dynamic like .. she doesn’t know how to approach him and apologize but a lot of what she does is to protect him. she started sending him money when she went to yale, literally blackmails a news source to not bring up her family which is mostly done for his and her sake, etc. at this point she just doesn’t know how to even approach to topic, so if she does anything for him it’s always nameless or anonymous - she just literally has no idea what she’s doing at this point, but even now so much of what she does is for him.

pov: your name is avery jeong and you are being kicked out of your house and family at age 18 because your sister snitched about some drunk mistake you made 2 years ago

as of right now, avery has no relationship with his parents and a minimal relationship with his sister, lilia. however, avery was always treated as the baby of the family. he was set to take over the drug ring when he got older and was given minimal information about it to shelter and protect him from anything that could potentially make his views on the family’s business turn sour. despite this, avery really had no plans to actually take over the business and was going to hand over the position to lilia once she became old enough even though he didn’t tell anyone about this. before avery got the chance to step up, lilia told their parents about how he had broken one of the main family rules by telling someone he’d just met at a party about what the jeong family really did behind the big pharm cover. their parents were absolutely livid and forced avery to move out and denounced him from the family.

𝗠𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 ↝ iris jeong

our least favorite capricorn sun gemini moon out there! god this woman is the worst! song seonmi fc, this woman is LETHAL. iris’ side of the family were the ones who started the drug ring so miss thing was seriously into it. it was her life, she grew up with it, and she took it so seriously that anyone could tell. she had extremely high expectations for avery to take over too and had originally planned to school him on family law and how the business worked as soon as he could walk, but eventually ended up babying him when it came to preparing to the position thank to her arranged husband’s influence. iris kind of let avery do his own thing growing up, made sure he was on top of his grades and was the one who suggested that he go to a specialized school just to make sure that he was reaching his top brainiac potential to be smart enough to run the show. the little that avery knew about the drug ring came from iris too, but she would always here comes the choo choo train it into his brain so it wasn’t too much for him to take. she knew her son was smart and fit to take over, but she feared him not being able to do so which was frankly her own fault. honestly receiving any sort of care from iris is out of character she literally is scary as hell. their relationship? really didn’t have one. i guarantee if you asked either of them at any point in time to name one personal fact about the other, they wouldn’t be able to come up with one. they just worked as mom and son, stood respectfully at a yard’s distance and only interacted when they needed to for the sake of the family. however, they Really interacted after lilia snitched on avery. iris was the one who came up with the idea to kick avery out and was so assured in her idea that she didn’t rest until he was out of the house and never came back that night. even though they have had no contact in the five years since avery was forced to leave, iris continues to blame every single family issues that arises on avery even if he has nothing to do with it. avery holds so much resentment for iris that it frankly makes him sick!!!!!!!!! and while he might be able to forgive lilia and his father, iris will never be on the docket.

𝗙𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 ↝ tobias jeong

tobs ... the tobster ... aqua sun cancer moon brain rot. this man fixed up an old jeep and made it his entire personality. ya’ll ever had one of those science teachers that couldn’t spell and always lost their glasses when they were really on their head? yeah that’s him. also a certified doormat. and maybe a kim joohun fc but like give him more bill nye wannabe looking vibes. avery and his father had a good relationship for the most part. tobias was really chill, understood maybe 1/3 of what happened in the family. he tried to stand up for avery and lilia in certain situations and understood that iris was absolute trash (even he didn’t truly want to marry her, it was more business between their families than anything), but he was so compliant that he never actually made an impact. however, tobias was the one that truly made avery’s childhood ... good. he’d pick up avery from school in that old jeep he fixed up, play some classic dad music, and drive around for a while so they didn’t have to go see iris so soon. the night avery got kicked out, tobias was the one that actually stuck up for avery. even though it was one simple statement that maybe avery should stay, it was the only time anyone stood up for avery that night. of course, tobias was quickly shut down by iris and he didn’t try to have avery stay after that however he probably feels so much regret for not doing more that night. avery truly was so angry that tobias didn’t try to do more to get him to stay, but like it’s whatever! what the fuck was tobias supposed to do! a few months after avery was kicked out, he actually called his dad at a super low point ( see this gif set ) but even then tobias wasn’t willing to fight for avery to try to come back even after hearing at how he had nothing and didn’t know what to do. avery never truly hated his dad, but he now resents him for not trying when there is so much more he could have done.

𝗦𝗜𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦

𝗦𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥 ↝ lilia jeong

if there was one member of the jeong family that avery truly loved, it was lilia. avery loved being her big brother. he cared for her more than anybody in his life and truly thought she was capable of so many good things which is why he never had any intentions to take over the drug ring. avery had always wanted that position to go to her because he believed that lilia was the right one to take it because she easily could have done so much better than he could’ve. growing up, avery wasn’t that much of an open book as he is now. if he had a secret though, lilia was the first one to know. he basically told her everything, from explaining some project he’d been working while they walked through an apple orchard or the biggest mistake he’d made in his life which was spilling the family secret. the last thing he was expecting was for lilia to tell their family about that, especially after so long and in a manner that seemed almost self serving after she promised to keep it a secret. even though lilia's decision to snitch literally turned his life upside down and really fucked him over, he’s never been able to see lilia as anything besides his sister. sure, he’s felt true betrayal and never thought he would get screwed over like that, but avery is always one for second or third or fourth or fifth chances even in situations like this. no matter how hard avery wanted to convince himself that he didn’t want lilia in his life, he was never able to do it. lilia always stayed his emergency contact even when they weren’t speaking and no matter how many new people avery met that were closer to new haven hospitals.

for now though, their shit is tbd! avery is too afraid to talk to lilia about everything because bringing up the past pains him and he’s also unsure of how things will work out. also, he’s most likely expecting an apology first and foremost. everyone knows they’re siblings, but the reason why they’re not close are all lies. they tell everyone that they grew apart and lilia began to tell others that avery fucked up a business deal and made the choice to leave the family which avery goes along with simply because he assumes it’s what lilia wants. sometimes he wished that they actually had just grown apart rather than having to experience all the shit that happened.

even if avery knows he’s already willing to give lilia another chance, he wants an apology and he knows he’s deserving of that at the very least. until then, you can catch avery gazing longingly into the windows of music shops at acoustic guitars that resemble the one he would always play on for lilia and had to leave behind after being kicked out. those same few songs are always stuck in his head. avery hasn’t been able to eat ripe peaches anymore because the taste reminds him of sticky handed food fights and hiding one in their parents’ closet to rot. one time he went on a date with a girl whose favorite band was the moldy peaches and he promptly left to throw up in the bathroom. every time he would enter the underground fighting ring he would try not to lose because that meant lilia might have to get the call that he wasn’t alright even though he wanted her to know if anything happened to him.

Between letters to Santa and presents for the good residents on island, the postal worker was absolutely swamped. There was little to no time for Hyejin to make a visit to the newspaper HQ for leisurely visits.

Until now.

She walked into the familiar building with a hop in her step, her smile as big and as bright as the sun above. After being pointed in the right direction towards her target, Hyejin made it a point to stop exactly twenty centimeters before their desk, making her presence known by reading the conveniently place nameplate out loud. “Hwang Seonmi.” Her words rang like a song, smiling through her words. “Hi. 🔬 — was there one scene you were building up to/knew you had to get just right?

honestly, cold hearts was very poorly planned on my end, and i could have done a lot better. the one scene that surprised me was the ending in fight because it wasn’t planned. once i started writing it, i realized where i wanted it to go, and rewrote the scene about five times to get it just right. it was a very spontaneous thing for the mc to do, but she did it out of love, and that’s a very dangerous thing sometimes. also, i was a little anxious to how the readers would react because of how out of the blue it was, so it needed to be perfect!

🎵 — did you have a playlist/piece of music that went with this story?

nope! there is no playlist made that goes with this story. if you know any songs that fit the theme or remind you of it, i would be more than happy to add a playlist section to the masterlist :)

⭐ — what’s a scene/paragraph that you’re proud of?

i am really happy with how us turned out. i knew i wanted to do something with flashbacks, but i kind of surprised myself there. i thought the middle flashback about seonmi and the mc in the park was kind of out there, but it still tied to the story. okay, okay, so my favorite? i really can’t choose between jaebeom’s flashback and the hide and seek flashback...

So, this is probably going to be the messiest review I’ll do in a while, mostly because I completely gave up on writing notes on this drama, so I fully rely on my memory to talk about it.

Hwayugi is a supernatural romance. Based on a Journey to the West. In 2017, Son Oh Gong, the monkey, and Ma Wang, the bull, are in constant conflict since Oh Gong has been freed of the five elements mountain by a young girl, Jin SeonMi, 25 years ago. As he tries to gather points to return to his status of diety, he gets to encounter her again, but things have changed. Jin SeonMi is now Sam Jang and manages to get Son Oh Gong under her control so he would protect her.

As always, I tried to put the less spoilers it was humanely possible, but some might have escaped me so stay careful as you read.

As many, I was really hyped by the two first episodes that were just stunning. I was eager to see how the drama would unfold so I waited until the episodes resumed after the initial contreversy - long story short there was an accident on set probably because people were careless and tried to work too fast (not the one injuried, but the ones who directed him). I was blown away by the original images and the drama stayed pretty good aftermath. Each character had its own use, the story progressed nicely, everything seemed to go in a direction, but... I’ll be honest. I have a problem with this drama. Maybe it was because I wanted it so badly to be the new Goblin (it shared a few similarities with this drama in how the plot went) that my expectations were a little bit too high for the actual produce.

My first problem with this drama was that the story always played against Jin Seo-Mi and the story who was originally about her became about Son Oh Gong. I mean, the plot should have turned around how the bad-ass Sam Jang manages to save the world, but most of the story revolved around how Son Oh Gong managed to save the demoiselle in distress.

My second problem with this drama was the romance. I mean, I wouldn’t have minded it if it wasn’t that quick and that annoying because of all the back and forth because the characters just couldn’t decide themselves and ask the right questions or be honest with each other.

My fourth problem was that around the middle, things started to get a little bit boring. The pace started to drag a little bit, and the situations kept on repeating themselves. Like in all the cases, Sam Jang was always in danger because she was really stupid and trying to do everything all alone. And in all the cases she was put the sleep, the woman alwyas was like “oh, Son Oh Gong is going to love me” and bla bla bla. These cases should have been fun and awesome, but... I felt like a lot weren’t because of how repeatitive they were. Personally, I’ll say that the main arc of the plot wasn’t really interesting to me.

My fifth problem was just the last few episodes who weren’t that good. Like the ending was just a mess for the main story. And my sixth and last problem was how poor some special effects were. I mean like... Honestly... If you were going to scrap a drama, do it correctly, don’t hype the viewers by giving two flawless first episodes. As many said, I think it would have been wiser if they had pre-produced the drama rather than filming it while it was on-air - where they too insecure about their plot to pre-poduce it?

But, so far I’ve only talked about the main story. There are two other stories in parallel, which would be the one of Ma Wang and of BuJa. Ma Wang story problaby wasn’t the best, but compared to the main story it was gold. It had feels in it and a relatively good and heartwarming ending. Also, I did believe it had more depth than the main story, probably because it was a past and developing story. Then BuJa... The story was good, but I wasn’t happy with its ending. But among the stories it was the cutest. For the overall drama, I would say that the start was good, the middle okay and the ending quite bad. The pace, as the drama progressed, started to drag and even if the progression contained a lot of foreshadowing (which made it a bit predictable, but foreshadowing is a good thing because it gives you the impression that you’ll be able to solve the ending before the drama takes an end) but it was kind of boring. I don’t really want to talk about the ending, but... Damn... It was so cliché. I would have preferred it to be a sad ending than an ambiguous one.

There are three characters that I found principale in this drama. There would be our two leads (whose actors did a really good job considering how cliché those characters are) and my - new found - favorite character, Ma Wang. Son Oh Gong was the usual “bad guy” with a short temper, but that got really sweet once he fell in love, even though he always wanted to look cold in front of his woman because... Because he’s probably a bit stupid... Sam Jang or Jin Seon Mi was the usual demoiselle in distress that started as a strong and bad-ass female lead. I liked her duality at first, how she grew up controlling her fear but always hoping for that fairy to pop out and protect her even though she knew that once he betrayed her, he would always be the loser who broke his promise. But as the drama progressed the part of her that was reckless and always wished to be helped out was put forward. I do believe that the best moment for this character was whenever Son Oh Gong was out of the picture and she could take decision on her own regarding her own fate. For Ma Wang... I started not really knowing what to think about this character, but as his story unfolded, I started liking him more and more. He was slightly complex. He never said what he thought, but always looked after everyone around him making sure that none of them would get hurt. He always felt bad whenever something was happening. He was like the Grim Reaper in Goblin and that’s probably why I loved him so much. He was always against Son Oh Gong, but he was probably his best friend and the only one with which the monkey became a slightly complex character. Also, his interactions with the other characters were the cutest. For the side characters, there was BuJa who was my favorite character until she suddenly died out of nowhere and was replaced by a character I didn’t really care about (I didn’t hate her nor did I like her, I was just a bit indifferent towards her. She was a pitiful being, that’s pretty much all.), P.K. who was an adorable being and I shipped him and BuJa so badly, and I think the last character I would consider as important enough to be mentionned would either be Yoon DaeSik, Ma JiYoung or Lee HanJoo who were three different characters but were really similar. They were all followers for the main characters. DaeSik was Son Oh Gong’s loyal follower, Ma JiYoung, Ma Wang’s loyal dog. And Lee HanJoo was Ji SeoMi’s colleague. Overall, the characters had a small evolution. It was more obvious for some characters, but in all the case it was quite usual. I wasn’t really satisfied with the characters development, but I think that the way the plot was turned played a big role in confining those characters in their cliché, which annoyed me a little bit.

Before concluding, I just want to say that if you don’t you the shop owner’s grandson is One, a rapper who debuted not too long ago under YG. I do personally like his songs, but his album is quite pricey for the moment (it has two full-length songs on it and one instrumental and costs about 10 USD), but please support him in his music and acting career. He looks like a sweetheart and is talented. Well, you know, I can’t judge how good one’s acting is, but I do believe that he didn’t do too bad considering it was his first role.

So, I’ll conclude here. The plot woud be worth a 7.5/10 mostly because of its first part that was good. The characters would be a 2.5/5 mostly because of Ma Wang and some side characters. The tearjerker factor would be like a 1.5/5.
