Rockstar Girlfriend VI. | Hazel Callahan
Rockstar! Hazel Callahan x Popstar! Reader
Summary: Hazel Callahan and Y/n L/n have to be in a pr relationship, but both of them can stand each other.
Warnings: Enemies to lovers! Enemies to lovers! Enemies to lovers! Angst, Fight (not physical) Not proof read. Sorry for any mistakes, English isn't my main language.
a/n: I’m back after a while!! Sorry for being MIA. I don't know how to feel about this but I'm really thankful for all the support. Lots of new things coming soon. love you guys.
part one. part two. part three. part four. part five.
Tumblr media
The tour was canceled.
Everything Y/n had worked for went down the drain. Not only had she lost the tour she risked everything for, but she had lost her bandmates' trust. They were losing followers by the minute and receiving hate left and right. All that success she had gained because of Hazel was almost gone.
The moment everyone found out about Hazel's outburst, the show was canceled with a blink of an eye. They could hear the cries and screams of fans outside. Y/n couldn’t bear to listen, she felt bad, guilty even. Management said that her band couldn’t perform because they were only the openers, so karma was biting her ass quickly.
But after one show became two and then two became five, management canceled the whole tour, every single date. They claimed that they couldn’t do anything without Hazel, their star. Y/n tried to be positive that maybe Hazel was joking around and that she was going to come back but when management canceled the tour, her feet finally hit the floor. The tour was over before it even started. The hop of the wave of success both bands were having was cut short. The most anticipated tour of the year was canceled due to mental health issues from one of the band members. That was what got posted on the band's page and every news article.
But Hazel made it her job for people to know that, that wasn’t the case. If the tour was canceled she wanted people to know the real reason, no more tricks, no more lies and no more fake love. Y/n felt her heart stop when her phone started to blow up with notifications and her eyes landed on a video Hazel had posted on instagram after being MIA for two weeks.
That was when “Mean” was born.
“Hi guys! I know I’ve been gone for a while and all of a sudden the tour got canceled. But I’m here to tell you guys that we are currently working to get your back running again. This time we decided it was best to get new openers. Anyways, on my little break I decided to write this song I really hope you guys enjoy!” Hazel said to the camera starting to strum her guitar. Y/n felt her heart drop every second that passed by. If she was already losing everything with a blink of an eye it wouldn’t surprise Y/n if what was left of her career ended just because of that song.

pjandhazeparis sorry to disappoint but I'll be a groupie for life
bottomsupdates why is y/n lurking in the likes? hasn't she done enough
| ynloveshazel please leave y/n alone
| bottomsupdates she's the one lurking her comments
Hazel had uploaded an acoustic version of a song she had written through her break in an attempt for people to understand what she was going through. It was something new, different from the songs she was used to writing for herself and other people. The song quickly took the world by storm gaining everyone’s attention. Fans had caught up quickly with who the song was written for, making it their job to make Y/n’s life a living hell. Her band's account was barely existent by the minute and management was going insane.
Y/n couldn’t let things slide. She had three options, let her pr team do everything for her, clap back and deny the allegations, or attempt to do a song just like Hazel did. The thing was, Y/n was already used to Hazel’s constant help writing songs and honestly she kinda missed spending midnights with her writing songs. She missed how Hazel would slowly touch her skin in an attempt to get her attention or how she got lost in her blue eyes while she tried to explain the chorus of the song. Y/n missed Hazel. She hated herself for running things with her. Things were finally different, this time Y/n didn’t hate Hazel, Hazel just hated Y/n.
She was going to make things right, possibly ending her career. But it was worth it. If Hazel heard the song, she could lose everything and she wouldn’t care.
Y/n propped her camera hitting record while sitting in front of it, letting out a sigh. She slowly strummed the guitar she barely knew how to play but all she could think of was all the times Hazel had attempted to teach her how to play it.
“This song is for someone special in my life that I treated so badly. I know I fucked up and I wished I could go back to december, they day I met you and start all over”

Y/nnn let out a sigh as she looked at her phone flooding with notifications. At least if she was gone for social media, she was certain Hazel had heard the song. Maybe she could get another chance or another life where they could get together with no mistakes.  Y/n’s thoughts got interrupted by a harsh knock on her door. She quickly walked towards it, ready to face her neighbor. But she felt her heart drop when she noticed the familiar blue eyes she had fallen in love with. Y/n’s eyes wandered all over her trying to tell if she was real or an act of her imagination due to the lack of sleep. But as the words slipped out of her mouth she knew it was all reality.
“My guitar.” Hazel replied, playing with her feet. Y/n furrowed her eyebrows and looked at her confused.
“What do you mean, my guitar? How do you know where I live?” Y/n responded leaning against the doorframe trying to get a better look at Hazel.
“My guitar. You have my lucky guitar, I saw it in the video you posted. Now, can you please give it back”
“No.”
“What do you mean no? It’s mine, L/n.”
“You don’t speak to me, drop a diss track on my name and expect me to give you back you guitar” Y/n exclaimed while looking at Hazel with a surprised look on her face.
“Are you insane? You do know that all of this is not my fault, right? I was willing to do anything for you but you preferred the fame over me. You fucked up your own career and you fucked up with me. Yet, I came here, to your apartment and you still want to act like the victim instead of saying your sorry. You know what stays with the stupid guitar. I don’t want it anyway. You want to play a game that I’m really tired of playing. I really don't understand why are you like this.” Hazel exclaimed loudly pulling on her hairs.
"I like you Hazel and I'm like this because I know I screwed up the only good thing in my life" Y/n said loudly leaving Hazel with her mouth wide open not knowing what say.
At least he got the chance he desperately needed.
thank you for reading

i’ve been hiding the comeback of apple pie for- months.
FIVE more chapters in the works and this is only the first one.
Apple pie part 6
Warnings: Mentions of throw up, angst and depictions of panic attacks.
I’m so excited for you guys to read this.
————————————————————————
ding
That chirping noise of the bell above the front door of your shop that somehow still made you jump even if you’ve been here every single day for 12 hours.
Was it smart to use all of your savings to open up your own flower shop? Probably not. Yet you didn’t have a single care in the world. Moving to the city was probably the best decision you could’ve made for yourself. Trying to forget a life you once knew, that person you used to be.
Your flower shop was unique though. Yes you sell bouquets, but If people were having a hard time picking what they wanted, you would make them a bouquet of their own 12 flowers. And since it was spring, business was booming. Your eyes flicked up, a wide smile growing across your face as you watched a man walk in, his eyes scanning over all of the separate bouquets.
Your fingers held at the knife in your hand, picking the thorns off the white roses between your fingers. Your form finally focuses back onto the bouquet you were creating, the pink ribbon resting on the counter. 12pm and the store was still this dead.
Your body jolted as the man who walked in earlier was in front of the counter, your finger pushing up onto the thorn on the stem making you hiss as you quickly pressed your now bleeding finger into your jeans before you looked up at him.
“What can I help you with?”
Handsome. The scruff on his face shaped perfection to him, and his smile was even better, his dark brown hair and broad shoulders making you wonder if he would be able to tell if you were staring.
“Sorry to scare you, Is your finger okay?”
His voice was like butter too? You were sure you looked almost starstruck, your head shaking as you let out a short laugh.
“Please, I’m my only employee, I cut myself so many times a week.”
The man chuckled softly, his eyes gazing over the braid on your shoulder and the glasses on your face. Then it hit you, this is the same man who’s been passing by every week. You noticed he would peer in whenever you were moving new pots in, but the shop is right next to a bakery so you assumed maybe people just looked.
“Not to sound like a stalker but, I was wondering If you wanted to go out sometime”
Was he really asking you out? Your heart was beating in your ears as you accidentally let out a huff, your eyes flickered around the shop as his hand rested against the counter.
“You’re asking somebody out and we haven’t even exchanged names?”
Your sentence made him smile yet again and god, did you enjoy seeing it. He shrugged, putting his larger hand out across the counter.
“You’re right, how rude of me. Chris Redfield.”
Your bleeding finger suddenly stopped, allowing you to reach your hand up, grabbing at his and smiling widely as you both exchanged a firm handshake.
“Well, I would love to go out sometime, Chris.”
Anybody should be flattered when a handsome man asks them out, right?
Right.
The view from your apartment was gorgeous. Especially at night time. The air lingered with silence as you poured yourself a glass of red wine, your heater turning on as you began to walk towards the chair you had facing the big open window by your living area. You sat down with a soft sigh, your legs crossing as you took a long sip of the thick red liquid. How many bottles did you go through this week anyways.
Your other hand comes up to rub your bare arm, your body flinching as you quickly pull your fingers away. A loud sigh leaves you as tears quickly weld in your eyes, the wine glass in your hand tilting back as you suddenly gulped down the liquid, a thin red line of spilled wine running down your chin as you just watched the active city below you.
Where could he be? You wondered as you wiped your chin, four years is a long time right? He has definitely forgotten after four years.
Maybe he went back for you.
This is a mental battle you’ve had with yourself everyday for the last year since you left your hometown. Selling your house to a single mom, who had promised to keep your garden alive when you left. The thought of him showing up to not find you always left you broken. But he had all that time, there’s no way he showed up.
It’s why you moved. You couldn’t keep yourself there with the hope that one day he would appear again. You had this sick fantasy that he would come back and everything would go back to normal, knowing it wasn’t going to happen. It killed your mental health and it still does.
Yet here you were, going on a date with some man that you don’t even know. You could hear Leon in the back of your head lecturing you about how stupid it is to give strangers your number, let alone your apartment number. You snapped out of your thoughts at the sound of a knock at the door, the sound of your heels clicking filling the apartment as you walked to the front and swung it open to see Chris.
You blinked at him a few times then looked down at the bouquet of pink roses and daisies in his hands. His arm extends to hand them to you carefully.
“Wow, these are beautiful, thank you so much.”
Yet there was a heavy feeling in your throat at the sight of the daisies. You refused to grow them at your shop and there was a reason why. You swallowed the lump in your throat, quickly inviting the man into the apartment as you hurried to the kitchen to put them in a vase.
“Not as beautiful as you though, not to sound overly sappy or anything.”
You couldn’t help but laugh as you shook your head, tucking some hair behind your ear as you set the vase of flowers on your counter and looking at him.
“What, you talk to girls like this all the time?”
Chris shook his head as the two of you began to walk to the front door, his head shaking as he held it open for you and let you lock it.
“Personally, women don’t really talk to me”
—————————————————————-
There’s no way women don’t talk to Chris redfield.
The two of you have been at this fancy restaurant he took you to for hours, laughing up a storm over random jokes and old childhood embarrassing stories. Your eyes scanned over his arms and his shirt before you tilted your head leaning forward a bit.
“I can’t believe I've never asked, what do you do for work?”
It’s to forward a question.
What if he lies to you?
How can you know he’s being honest-
“Well my career started when I was very young. I enrolled in the United States air force. Then I got tired of it I guess, started working at this place called Racoon City Police Department for a special service squad. Now I work for a private government agency, sorry if that scared you away. I know it may seem like my job is dangerous but I guarantee I'm fine.”
His honesty hit you like a truck. You blinked at him a few times processing what he had told you before a bell very similar to the one in your store rang in your head..
“Racoon City?”
You spoke, your fingers stopped tapping at the table as you looked across at Chris who just slowly nodded.
Don’t bring it up.
“Well it doesn’t push me away. I like a man in uniform.”
Hitting him back with corny pickup lines was your perfect solution.
“I’m supposed to go to this big company party next week, I don’t have a plus one. You should come with me.”
Chris spoke as he glanced at you after taking a bite of his food.
Saying yes was definitely far out of your comfort zone but, you’ve known him for about a month now. What could possibly go wrong anyways
——————————————————————
“Grief isn't just the mourn of death. Grief can hit you in so many ways, and the way it processes in your brain makes it harder to heal.”
Hearing your therapist's words made a soft sigh leave your lips as you just nodded your head. staring at the wall behind her as she just looked at you.
“You can’t hold onto the fact that maybe he was going to come back, you’ll drive yourself crazy forever.”
Plus, you had Chris now. He was an angel, he treated you so right and even if you didn’t want to talk about your ex- who wasn’t even really your ex but you were in love with him. He never made you happy.
Yet the way Chris treats you makes you wonder if the two of you could’ve been like this, sometimes you close your eyes and imagine that simple life with Leon but it can never happen. Not now.
——————————————————————
The weather has been so bad. Pouring every single day and Chris knows how much storms scare you. So staying at his house was definitely a blessing. The two of you weren’t dating yet, It’s only been two months and he says he knows what he wants but you’re not sure you believe him yet.
He works these awfully long hours leaving you alone in his house laying on his bed, staring at the ceiling. The sound of the rain growing heavier gains your attention as you glance over at the window, your heart suddenly racing as you clear your throat sitting up.
——-
The memory is clear as day still.
Your eyes fixated on your window in your bedroom. Your head snapping as you hear Leon whistle walking into the room.
“I hate-“
“You hate storms, you bring it up everytime it rains you know.”
Leon spoke with a small smile as he sat down on the bed, his fingers gently grabbing at your wrist, frowning slightly to feel how elevated your heart beat is. He quickly pulls you to his chest, making sure you’re comfortable. He loves how soft your hair is, his fingers running through the strands of your hair as you both soak in the silence.
“If something ever happened. Like we were to get separated and I haven’t seen you in years- I bet you’d pretend like you never knew me.”
Leon let your sentence settle for a second, his eyebrows frowned as he shook his head, his eyes dancing over the odd pattern of your ceiling as he gently gripped your shoulder and looked down at you.
“I would never pretend to not know you.”
——-
You don’t know why but the thought makes you sick. Sprinting to Chris’ bathroom, holding onto your stomach as you throw up, your hands grabbing at the floor now as tears quickly spring to your eyes. Then you’re gasping for breath, shaking your head as you stand up, your shaking palms reaching for the sink.
Everything is dizzy, and almost cloudy. You turn the water on, quickly splashing your face. Your vision is still dancing when you look up into the mirror, the edges starting to clear as you let out a long breath.
It’s hard being in a hole.
———————-
“Chris can you please zip this up, i don’t have the patience.”
The words came out jumbled and stressed, your skin rising with goosebumps when Chris’ fingers brush against your back, zipping up the dress with ease before he leans down slightly. Kissing at your shoulder as he grips at your arms. His thumbs caressing over your soft skin.
“As beautiful as the day I first saw you.”
Chris was what you needed. In a time where you felt most alone he showed up. He looked so handsome in his suit, you lick at your thumb as you fix his eyebrows, smiling as he grabs at your waist.
“You ready? Or do you need more time.”
He always worked around you.
“I’m ready but- thank you.”
Chris always rambled on about how his work space was honestly great. You couldn’t tell if he was lying because you use to say the same thing when you worked at the diner. The drive was suppose to be almost half an hour but it felt like two minutes.
Chris always opened the car door for you, his hand holding onto yours tightly as you two walked through the parking lot.
Your palms were sweaty, a feeling of unease lingering in the air.Something just felt off- almost like you were scared but of what?
Its badges of honor. Of course Chris was getting one but he didn’t tell you who else. The two of you were standing in the lobby of this giant hall forever, when the sound of Chris name made your head turn.
It all made sense. It felt like the blood was drained from your body, Chris’ hand slipping off your lower back to hug him.
Him?
Chris finally turns back to you, a wide smile on his face.
“Can’t believe I've never mentioned him. This is my friend, Leon.”
Your eyes are wide. Your throat feels like it’s swelling .
Leon too of course. His face white and his gaze fixated on your visibly shaken form
All before he extends his hand out to you.
“Leon Kennedy, pleasure.”

Bejeweled — JJ Maybank
An Outer Banks Imagine
Tumblr media
Pairing: JJ Maybank x Reader
Word Count: 2.2k
Summary: After mourning the end of a two-and-a-half-year relationship, you're finally ready to get back out there. You get more than you bargained for with some guy.
Warnings: Underage drinking, brief mention of cheating
A/N: I started this wayyyy back in the fall when Midnights was first released and have just now gotten around to finishing it. I hope you like this silly little Taylor Swift-inspired fic!
Masterlist
You pat silver glitter on your eyelids, careful to keep it contained to below your crease, but it seems like your best friend doesn’t care about that because she jumps off of your bed and launches herself forward, wrapping her arms around your neck and squealing. The force of her hug makes you wobble, almost falling out of your chair.
“Sarah!” You shriek, “You’re going to make me mess it up!”
“Sorry! I’m just so excited that you’re finally coming out again,” she gushes, pressing a kiss to the side of your head before loosening her grip so she’s just standing behind you with her arms on your shoulders, looking at you through your reflections in your vanity mirror. “We should do a shot before we go.”
“I’ve got a bottle of Grey Goose under my bed. Just let me finish this quick.” You shove her off in the direction of your bed and wrap up your makeup with some lip gloss and a spritz of setting spray. When you turn around, Sarah has a solo cup in each hand and when you take yours, you see she’s poured double shots. After downing it and chasing it with a swig from the open bottle of wine you’ve been sipping on while getting ready, you and Sarah head out for the night.
Sarah’s boyfriend is waiting for you in the driveway, his beat-up old VW van in blatant contrast to the white brick mansion and manicured grounds surrounding it. You’ve met John B a few times, mostly in passing at parties, and once or twice at Sarah’s before everything fell apart and you had to avoid her house like the plague. But it’s been four months, and despite your underlying anxiety about seeing Rafe again, you’re excited to get drunk somewhere other than your bedroom again.
Sarah climbs into the passenger side and leans over to give John B a quick kiss and you duck into the back, rolling your eyes at your lovesick friend. Despite the fact that they’ve been together for over a year, they’re still in the honeymoon phase and showing no signs of that stopping.
You’re not jealous - you’re not - but it does suck to be the single person in the backseat, watching your best friend lit up with love. It doesn’t help that your ex is her brother, who you had dated for two and a half years before finding out that he had cheated on you. It was a horrible, messy breakup, made even messier because Sarah got caught in the middle.
It’s not the first party you’ve been to since the breakup (that honor goes to the one and only house party you had attempted to attend a month and a half ago before leaving after forty five minutes), but it is the first boneyard party since the breakup and that’s on a whole different level. The beach is sure to be so packed, you’ll have your pick of tourons to dance with. Maybe it’ll make Rafe jealous, or at the very least, it will help you get over him.
Sure enough, the party is in full swing when John B pulls up to the beach. The loud, thumping music rattles his old car and you’re glad to be able to scramble out of it before the bass drops and increases the intensity of the shaking. John B leads the two of you over to the keg and pours you both a beer.
“Thank you, sir,” you say, giving him a mock salute as he hands over the plastic cup. He just laughs and shakes his head at you, wrapping his arm around Sarah to pull her into his side.
“I’m glad you came out with us, Y/N,” he says, voice full of sincerity. It melts your heart a little bit, because he’s just such a good guy. You’re happy for Sarah, and it dulls the sting of your own unfortunate romantic life a bit.
“Me too!” Sarah squeals, reaching out to squeeze your free hand with her own. Before you can respond, someone calls John B’s name, so you follow him and Sarah across the beach to where a campfire is set up.
It turns out to be JJ Maybank who had called for him, sitting by the fire with Kiara Carrera and Pope Heyward. JJ stands up when he sees the three of you approaching and walks around the fire.
“Hey, man,” John B says, greeting him with that smooth high-five-fistbump combo that all boys seem to love.
“Hey, JB,” JJ says. He wraps an arm around Sarah, pulling her in for a side hug. “Sarah.”
“This is…” John B starts, gesturing towards you, but JJ puts up a hand to cut him off. In his other hand is a lit joint, which he takes a quick hit of before speaking.
“Y/N Y/L/N, I remember.” He slides his aviators down his nose and peers over the rims at you with a small smirk on his lips.
“Maybank,” you say, nodding at him. You had only met JJ once or twice in passing, but he was always nice enough. To you, at least.
“Y’know, you’ve got this, like, aura around you. It’s like… moonstone.” He takes another hit of the joint, dropping his gaze down your body and then back up to your face.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You’re, like, shimmery.” A laugh escapes your lips, bubbling out of you like an overflowing glass of champagne.
“Okay, buddy, I think you’ve had enough of that.” You reach over to pluck the joint out from between his fingers, raising it to your lips. Smoke fills your lungs and you inhale until it starts to burn a bit and then push it out in a steady stream. JJ’s eyebrows raise in a mixture of shock and appreciation when you repeat the action two more times. Then you feel a hand on your shoulder and turn around to find Sarah standing right behind you.
“We’re gonna go dance,” she says, raising her voice so you can hear her over the music. “You gonna be okay here?”
“Yeah, I’m good!” You assure her, glancing back at JJ out of the corner of your eyes.
When you turn back towards the fire, Pope and Kiara have disappeared, leaving you and JJ alone. You try not to read into that too much, but it’s hard because he’s a notorious womanizer. He’s also really fucking hot, in his backwards hat and cut-off Kildare Marina t-shirt, grinning at you with the flickering light from the fire dancing across his face, so you decide to say fuck it and give it a shot, even if it’s only for tonight.
“Wanna sit?” he asks, gesturing towards one of the logs of driftwood situated around the fire. You nod and plop down next to him, giving the joint back. He takes another hit and then turns to look at you.
“What?” You ask through nervous laughter as something that feels like butterflies flutters in your stomach. It’s been a long time since you’ve felt the type of giddy excitement that comes from a burgeoning crush, and it feels as good as it is scary.
“You’re pretty.” You roll your eyes at that pitiful excuse for a pick up line and take the joint back, turning to stare into the fire. He just shrugs.
“What? It’s true. I’ve always thought so.” He’s not teasing, just stating a fact, and it shocks you so much that you nearly drop the joint. Thankfully, he has quick reflexes and is able to catch your wrist in his hand before it can fall completely.
It’s almost gone, so the two of you pass it back and forth until it dwindles down to nearly nothing, sharing a companionable silence and soft, secret smiles. Then JJ tosses the roach into the fire and gets up, moving to stand in front of you.
“Dance with me?” He asks with a flicker of mischief behind his eyes, holding his hand out to you. You make him sweat for a few seconds, biting your lip to keep yourself from grinning, then nod and take his hand, allowing him to pull you up and lead you over to the makeshift dance floor.
You’re really starting to feel the impact of the weed, inhibitions lowering just enough to dull your senses to the outside world, and you let yourself sink into the pure, hedonistic pleasure of it. The feeling of the bass thumping deep in your chest, the slight press of JJ’s fingers against your hips as you move together in time to the music, the sticky, salty air that lays heavy around you.
Time passes, though you’re not sure how much, and the more you dance together, the bolder it makes you. At some point, you spin around so your back is to JJ and grind up against him. One of his arms wraps around your waist, pulling you tight to him, and he uses the other to brush your hair off your shoulders, dropping his head down to rest his chin in the dip of your exposed collarbone. Your eyes flutter shut and you let your weight sink back into his chest a bit. It’s broad and warm, and you feel safe, tucked against a boy you barely know in the middle of a sweaty crowd full of your peers, some of whom have been flashing confused looks your way all night.
You don’t care, though, because for once, your brain isn’t running on a constant loop of intrusive thoughts about Rafe Cameron and Bella fucking Bond. That is, of course, until the crowd parts in front of you, revealing Rafe flanked by Topper and Kelce. You take a tiny, half-step back, leaning into JJ for support. JJ’s arm tightens around your waist and he wraps his other one around your shoulders protectively. As the three Kook boys get closer, you realize that Rafe’s wearing the vintage Air Jordans you bought him for his last birthday, and you roll your eyes at his audacity to show up and accost you wearing shoes you gave him as a present.
“Hey, Y/N,” Rafe says, lips curled up in his trademark half-sneer, half-smirk. “I see your standards have lowered.”
“Just following your example,” you tell him, shrugging as much as you can with JJ’s arms around your shoulders.
“You’re making a big mistake, Y/N, one you won’t be able to come back from.” Rafe’s eyes are dark and his voice is low and gravely in warning.
“Hmmm. I don’t think I am. You can try to change my mind, but you gotta wait in line. My dance card’s full at the moment.” With that, you turn around in JJ’s arms so you’re facing him and press your lips to his. It’s a quick, forceful peck that you hope conveys yes I’m doing this to mess with Rafe but I also want to really kiss you so please just go along with it. You feel him smirk against your lips and your whole body relaxes, knowing that he’s on the same page.
When you turn around to look at Rafe, he’s spluttering, looking from you to Topper with wide eyes. You wink at him and push against JJ’s shoulders in a silent request to leave the dance floor. His arms slide down your body and he captures one of your hands in his, lacing your fingers together.
Without a word, the two of you leave the dance floor, ignoring the fact that everyone’s eyes are following you as you cross the beach. Your heart rate skyrockets as adrenaline pumps through your veins, adding to your high. You feel powerful, unstoppable, and when you’re far enough away from everybody else, a laugh escapes your lips.
“What’s so funny?” JJ asks, turning his head to raise his eyebrows at you.
You launch yourself into his arms and reconnect your lips, pouring your answer into the kiss. He stumbles back a few steps but then regains his balance and pulls you against him, arms tightening around your waist. After a few dizzying, breathless minutes, you pull back just enough to be able to take a deep breath. JJ’s eyes flutter open, diamonds shining behind his blue irises. He surges forward, recapturing your lips for a moment before trailing his own down your jawline.
“This okay?” He murmurs against your pulse point.
“Better than okay,” you breathe, tilting your head back slightly to give him better access.
“Better than okay?” He pauses for a second, lips hovering above the sensitive skin between your collarbone and shoulder.
“Yeah, it’s…nice.” You feel your cheeks heat up, embarrassed and excited and embarrassed about the excitement.
“Nice,” he agrees, lifting his head back up so your lips meet again. And it’s not really anything yet, but the first flickers of like burn in your stomach, and for the first time since your breakup there’s something like hope inflating your chest like it’s a balloon.
It’s nice.

You sincerely regret covering for your coworker. The campus library has a consistent, albeit small, staff. You work the same days every week; Monday morning, Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning. The head librarian, Theresa, was more than willing to give you extra shifts whenever you needed. The library was where most of the richer students’ parents donated, and you were insanely lucky to get your job there. As a result of the consistent schedule, you work with two people regularly; Henry, who shares your major, and Janine, who’s one of the sweetest people you know. The rest of your coworkers, you knew exclusively through Theresa and her insistence of having staff get togethers at any opportunity.
There’s Chastity, who lives on your floor, and her girlfriend Kate. You got a front row seat to their first kiss after three months of egging them on with Janine at Henry’s 20th birthday. There are three more workers that work during the week on alternating shifts to you; Sam, the newest member of the term; Hae-Won, the only person who had worked there longer than you and Theresa; and Wilbur.
Wilbur, who was currently your new coworker as you started working five days a week. Hae-Won’s mother was sick, and Theresa had begged you to cover for them while they flew interstate to go take care of her. You’d been working at the campus library since you were a freshman, and they’d always been good to you. You had agreed, and now you were needing to rush from class to the library after every single one of your lectures. Sam, Henry and Theresa had all assured you that if you were late because of class you wouldn’t lose your job, but you felt bad leaving them with all the work.
Wilbur has barely spoken a word to you since you’d started working the same shifts. He’s not rude or angry, just quiet as far as you can tell. You like him. You both keep to yourselves, and Wilbur doesn’t snitch on you for smuggling your sandwiches out of the office when you browse the stacks during your breaks.
He doesn’t get mad at you for being late when you are, and he always puts stuff on the top shelf whenever you ask. He’s soft, and incredibly smart. You learn about him through hushed evenings in the office, both of you dead on your feet after you’ve locked the doors, neither of you wanting to leave quite yet. The low light gives his eyes an amber glow the same colour as sun as it peeks through the slats in the blinds of the office, surrounded on all four sides by large windows. The fishbowl, the kids call it when they come in on Friday afternoons. Not quite, you think. You’re both too boring to be fish, you make a joke when you hear a young boy say it. Wilbur gets a look in his eyes that he keeps for the next hour until you confront him. “Sometimes people don’t look a fish ‘cause they’re interesting,” he all-but whispers when you ask, eyes aglow and top row of teeth pulling on his bottom lip. “Sometimes they’re just pretty.”
You get to know Wilbur over campus coffees, and handmade bookmarks inspired by the paperbacks he checks out every week. Through his handwritten post-it note on the corner of the main monitor at the front desk, a stack of books with a cat perched on top, his writing slanted but mainly kept between the spines of each book. A request for a novel you’ve never heard of, but vow to search for. Theresa is the one who handles incoming books, but that’s not going to stop you from finding it yourself.
You begin to find those sticky-notes around more and more. There’s one resting on top of your backpack for you to find as you return from the bathroom. That’s a pretty skirt, the first one says. You should wear your hair like that more often, one three days later on the stack of returns he’s asked you to reshelve. There’s one a week after that forces a smile on your face. This made me think of you. It’s resting on a tiny journalist style notebook, one where you flip on the top. It’s got a quote from your favourite novel on it, and you slip the sticky note inside it gingerly, tucking it into the front pocket of your backpack. That afternoon during your lunch break, you go to the craft store instead of staying in and get yourself some post it notes. Yours are in the shape of a lemon, and when Wilbur goes into the fishbowl to grab his stuff once your shift is over, he finds one stuck to the side of his bag. Two words, ten numbers, all in your handwriting. Call me.
So he does, he calls you that very night. Despite the late time, you guys stay on the phone for nearly three hours. The next shift you two share, you tease him. “I thought you were meant to be the quiet type,” you giggle as his ears turn pink, him intentionally facing away from you to shield the smitten grin on his face as he pretends to write something on the staff calendar. “You had a lot to say the other night.”
It continues that way for a while, nightly phone calls in which you finally get to hear him talk unabashedly about the things he’s interested in. He’s in a band, he confesses shyly one night when you’re both on the verge of sleep. You don’t reply for a second, and he thinks you might have dozed off. You pipe up after a moment, voice heavy with sleep and Wilbur thinks he can’t possibly like you more. “Your first gig’s Saturday, right?” He nods, even if you can’t see him. You keep going anyway. “I’ll be there.”
He wishes you hadn’t told him, because he spends the next three days stressing. Performing always makes him a little anxious, a healthy amount of butterflies, as his friends say. But this is too much. He changes his shirt three times on Saturday night, twice because he wants you to like it, and another time because he sweated through the third one. He blames it on the intensity of the lights, when the drummer asks him if he’s okay, but they can all see the way his eyes are locked onto your frame, tucked into a little corner of the underground bar they’re playing. They play for about forty minutes, and you’re a little embarrassed to admit that you’ve never heard a single song they did.
Wilbur goes into the little backstage area after their last song, and his bandmates will swear he’s never moved so fast in his life. He’s chugging a bottle of water while trying to wrestle his guitar off his back, his glasses fogged up from the sweat covering his face. there are a few bothersome strands sticking to his cheeks, but he doesn’t care about that. He just wants to see you.
He gets to your corner and the table is empty. No, the table has things on it. Your chair is empty. There is something on the table. He reaches it and flops down into the chair you were just sitting in. A waitress brings him a glass of lemonade that you ordered for him and he gulps it down gratefully. He allows himself a few moments to bask in the post-show high. You might not be there, but that only brought his mood down slightly. He did it.
He is a little hurt that you didn’t stick around, but it’s nearing 10 and he knows you have a test on Monday. He takes another long swig of his drink, and reaches blindly for the one other object on the table; a paperback novel. It’s his favourite. He didn’t even remember telling you it was his favourite, but somehow you knew. His heart hammers inside his chest and he has to remember how to breathe for a second. He’d looked everywhere for that, even going as far as to see if he could order it online.
He flips open the cover, just to check, and he finds a scrawled message beneath the title page. Heard you were hoping to get your hands on one. I hope you enjoy. You’ll have to tell me all about it.
And he does. It takes him less than a week to read the entire book, and he comes to you on a random Thursday, eyes sparkling with a glint you’ve only ever seen that one night he was performing, and he leans over the front desk where you’re standing and before you can even process it he’s taking your head in his hands and pulling you into a firm hug. You’re not as tall, so you’re on your toes as you lean over the desk, struggling to wrap your arms around his torso as he hugs you.
And then he’s talking, loud and clear, and if the library was open people would be giving him dirty looks for how unashamedly he’s speaking to you. You revel in it. He keeps his hands enclosing yours and you lean over the desk to get as close to him as you can, wanting to absorb every single word out of his mouth. Wanting to breathe it in and keep it between your ribs.
Eventually he lets you go to go do some work, but you decide at that moment that you never want him to shut up again.
So, he doesn’t. With constant encouragement from you, Wilbur becomes more outspoken. Of course, there were the phone calls, but he was still reserved in person. He seems to take up more space over the next few weeks, unfurling slowly like an old painting, perfectly preserved with so much beauty to show once he was out in the open. It starts as small things, the way he calls out to you across the library after closing instead of approaching you to tell you softly. You’re almost in mourning, feeling like you’d lost that closeness with Wilbur that only you seem to have. The notion that once you put something out into the world it no longer belongs to you. Not that he ever did, not like that at least.
You’d feel like that and then Wilbur would do something so small, so sacred, that your heart would ache. Whispering jokes in your ear, fingers brushing yours when he passes you a book he thinks you’ll enjoy, grabbing onto both of your hands when he got so excited about something that he needed a physical tether to you to stop himself from floating away, into the air that he was now filling so wonderfully.
The others started noticing it too; Theresa mentioning to you how much more confident he seemed after he’d left the room, Sam, who brightened now that Wilbur seemed to return his enthusiasm, even the bassist of Wilbur’s band, who you ran into at a coffee shop, said he was different.
His band got another gig at a bigger bar, and of course you were invited again. This time you planned on sticking around for the whole thing, letting him wrap you in a sweaty hug once he ran off stage. “You were so good,” you gush, your breath on his ear sending shivers down his spine. His hands ghost up and down your arm, and you can’t bring yourself to let go of him. “But, Wil. Seriously, enough is enough.”
He pulls away just enough to get a clear picture of your face, shadows covering one side, the dim lighting in the venue not doing enough to take away from just how pretty you look.
“You guys need to start playing songs I know the words to.”
Your fake annoyance makes him laugh, one of the most genuine laughs you’ve ever heard from him. Warm, and thick, like caramel. Like his eyes when the two of you are huddled together in the fishbowl and he’s laughing, like there will never be enough time to spend with you. Because there isn’t.
His hands stop in their motions, and he notices your bare arms. “You’re freezing, lovely. Here.” He steps away from you and shrugs off his button up, leaving him in just a white-sleeved tee as he guides your arms in. The sleeves cover your hands and he goes as far as to roll them up delicately. His face is an inch from yours as he unwraps his hands from your wrist, and your fingers toy gently with a stray curl that bounces when you release it from your grip.
This time it’s you who takes Wilbur’s jaw in your hands, fingers running over his stubble. He’s drunk, hasn’t had a drop of alcohol the entire time, but well and truly intoxicated as he pulls you into him again, nose pressed to your hairline. “I’m so proud of you.” You mumble into his shoulder, and for a second, time is frozen.
You’re both brought out of it by rousing cheers from Wilbur’s bandmates, the guitarist and drummer both bullying Wilbur for not introducing you to them earlier. The bassist greets you warmly, and the three of them try to convince you both to go out for a drink. Wilbur’s the one who ends up ushering you out, arm around your shoulders as he placates his bandmates. Throwing a “We’ve got an early morning tomorrow at work,” over his shoulder as he steered you towards his car.
He’s only half lying. You do both have work the next day, however the library’s closed and Theresa’s hosting a party to thank everyone for their hard work. It starts at two, so you’re revelling in the fact that you get to sleep in. That doesn’t stop you from inviting Wilbur up to your apartment, though. Nor does it stop the two of you deciding to watch a movie together on the couch in your living room. It doesn’t even stop Wilbur from whispering to you while the credits roll. “You look so lovely tonight.” You flush, tearing your eyes from his face, looking down at where his hands are on your waist instead. “Can I kiss you?”
It definitely doesn’t stop you from nodding your head emphatically, your hands delving into his hair as he presses his lips to yours for the first time.
He tastes like spearmint gum and the mango of your lip gloss, his hands steadying you both and gripping onto the couch cushion. He pulls away just enough to murmur, “You’re wonderful,” and suddenly you’re so happy you’re laughing. He laughs too, taking your head in his hands until you’re kissing him again, and when he leaves nearly two hours later he’s gripping your hands so tight your breath hitches, promising he’ll see you at the party later.
And hours later, when you’re sipping on lemonade and leaning against one of the windows of the fishbowl, he sidles up to you and leans his head on top of yours. “My pretty girl.” Your hand wraps around his, and the two of you stand there for a few minutes in a comfortable silence, watching your coworkers mingle. He’d never been so outward in his affections, not when surrounded by people you both worked with. He was a reserved man, preferring to let loose around his family, his bandmasters, and you. But of course, that doesn’t stop him from pressing a kiss to your hairline, the two of you inside the library office, gazing outside into the rest of the library. “So so pretty.”

Pairing: Poe Dameron x gn!reader
Word count: 2.2k+

a/n: yeah sorry this came out of nowhere and is probably a bit of a mess and ngl I don’t fully understand Star Wars but I do love Poe Dameron so… hope you enjoy!
also I’m pretty sure there’s no mentions of gender or appearance or anything like that but as always if I’ve got that wrong and there is let me know! Appreciate you all, have a wonderful day🤍

nonononono…
You’re stumbling over rubble, uncaringly inhaling thick smoke as your numb legs carry you across the rugged terrain. Your heart thrashes around in your rib cage as your eyes sting with tears. No one ever prepares you for this when you’re learning to fly, not even your worrying thoughts every time either of you got in an X-Wing could prepare you for this.
Just moments ago you’d watched your best friend get shot out of the sky. The best pilot in the Resistance, hell the best pilot in the galaxy had been shot down in front of your very eyes.
It was only supposed to be a recon mission on some desolate planet no one had heard of for many, many years. But of course, in all of the galaxy, the First Order had a spontaneous patrol in the exact area just by the planet you were looking for. Poe was quick to spot them but before the two of you could make a quick getaway the four TIE fighters were barrelling in your direction.
“Shit! We gotta take them down. You take the two on the left and I’ll go right,” Poe’s crackly voice coming through your speaker somehow sounds calm in the middle of all this. It doesn’t matter how many times you fly your X-Wing or fight off the enemy there’s always a twinge of doubt about your ability in the back of your mind every time. But it all washes away every single time Poe utters the words, “Hey, you’re okay. We’ve got this.”
Your X-Wings are close enough that you can look to your right and see him in his cockpit. When he looks over at you it feels like time stands still for just a second, then you share a nod before both flying off in different directions. Your ships are still connected by your communicators so you can hear all the whooping and taunting Poe does as he flies. No matter how distracting he is, the sound of his voice is always something that will calm you. Even as you manoeuvre around the two TIE Fighters that are close on your tail.
“Poe! I can’t shake these guys,” you’re pulling up trying to roll over the top of the TIE Fighters to get an advantage behind them. You’re too out in the open and you’re finding it difficult to get around them. You’d never want to admit that the First Order is good at anything but maker these pilots are brilliant.
“We need to go down,” you can hear him pushing buttons, obviously trying to figure out a plan on the spot, “ah! There’s some mountains below. We’re better down there, I’ve pinpointed it on your map okay?”
“Shit!” You jump when you suddenly see one of the Tie Fighters in front of you explode, pulling a hard left to avoid going headfirst into it.
“You’re welcome!” You can picture the smug look on Poe’s face, always looking for a way to show off. Always a little reckless too. The man’s still chasing off his own two enemies he didn’t need to pick yours off for you too.
“A little warning next time would be great,” you push a few buttons, pulling up your map on the little screen in front of you. The one TIE now behind you again, chasing you down and shooting off blasters in every direction. You try to pick up speed as you quickly descend into the planet’s atmosphere, your ship beeping and flashing red in warning.
“Careful, Star.” The callsign he’d chosen for you rolling off his tongue with ease still makes your heart do a little flip. Your mind instantaneously shifts focus onto Poe’s X-Wing flying ahead as a TIE Fighter tries to come at him from the side. You’re quick to turn toward it, expertly flipping switches and locking your launcher onto the enemy ship. You can’t help but tease Poe just a little, “Careful, Commander.” The TIE explodes just as you speak and you smugly pull away in a different direction still acutely aware of the ship following you.
“A little warning?” He mocks your previous words and you can’t help but roll your eyes. Your head switches focus back to the task at hand, you’re trying to find an opportunity to lose the guy behind you or make him crash whichever comes first. Your eyes scan the new terrain, the mountains are just ahead but it’s too open and the gap between you and the enemy is closing.
“Change of plan!” You pull up and left suddenly yanking your ship in the direction of some towering trees, “gonna try lose them in the forest.”
“Star.” Poe’s voice warns, he always hates when you split off but you’re the only one he ever trusts to make decisions on the fly. You choose to just ignore the warning until he repeats it just as you spot the TIE Fighter pull away from your rear and go towards Poe. Shit.
“Poe!” You pull back hard, your X-Wing just floating on the spot for a second before it twists and you’re trying to speed toward the other ships.
“Yeah, I see them! Can you get behind them and I’ll lead them-“ A shot clips one of Poe’s wings and you can hear the beeping coming from his control pad.
“Poe?!” You’re immediately concerned, thinking the worst as you catch up.
“I’m good, just a little damage!” If you’d been anyone else you’d have missed the tinge of worry in his voice but you’re you and you’ve been his best friend since day one. His worry bleeds into your brain and your focus falters for just a second you miss a shot on one of your enemies. It comes back quickly as you start to see Poe’s ship slowing down significantly, giving the TIEs an advantage. One tries to take his side again just like the one before while the other continues to chase him from behind. You’re just out of range to lock your blasters on the ship and you’re pushing your X-Wing to its limits now just needing to get a little closer.
“comeoncomeoncomeon!” You’re nervously mumbling, your whole body tense, “YES!” Your control pad shows it’s locked on the target and you fire rapidly before it can change. Before you can even celebrate taking down another First Order pilot you see the red beams shoot out from the TIE Fighter you’d just been pursuing right before it explodes. You watch in horror as it completely takes out Poe’s other wing and he starts spinning toward the ground. He clips the last remaining TIE Fighter on his way down and sends it spinning straight into a tree and explodes.
You screech out his name as you hear his ship beeping through your comms, you can just make out what you think is Poe hitting the control panel with his fist. He doesn’t say a word and you feel stuck in place like some kind of force is holding you there so you can watch your best friend plummet to his death into the forest below. As if someone flips a switch you’re steering down haphazardly, not being as careful as you normally are when landing your X-Wing. It’s barely on the ground before you’re tugging at your seat belts and pulling off your helmet. You forego deploying your ladder instead just ungracefully slipping down the side and landing on the ground with a thud that sends shooting pain up your legs.
There are bits of TIE Fighter smoking or on fire, there are even parts of Poe’s beloved X-Wing scattered on the ground. Your legs feel like lead as you climb up a mound covering where you’re sure Poe crash-landed. Your lungs burn as you inhale the thick smoke in the air and you’re scared. So scared. You reach the top and you almost fall straight back down, the sight before you making your legs weak. That beloved X-Wing he’d spent years working on, the thing that had tally marks scratched into the floor of how many people he’d lost so he always knew what he was fighting for. That godforsaken thing you’d both spent countless late nights fixing up, just in pieces in front of you. It’s hard to see it all, a part obviously exploded and was blowing thick dark smoke out into the air. Your eyes sting and you’re honestly not sure if it’s the smoke or the fact you think your best friend just died and you blame yourself for it already. There were so many things left unsaid, so many adventures you were supposed to go on together. You knew every time either of you flew that this could happen but some part of you thought that you were both invincible, that nothing would ever happen to you and now it has and you’re numb.
Your legs almost give out as you clumsily stumble down the mound. You can feel your body trembling as you search the wreckage for confirmation of your worst fear. You’re coughing now as you get closer finding heaps of metal you start pulling apart in hopes you’re wrong.
He won’t get to see the Residence win.
He won’t get to grow old and have the kids he said he wanted.
You won’t get to spend another day with your best friend.
You won’t get to tell him you love him.
Your thoughts race at light speed and your legs finally give out, you sink to your knees and sobs freely fall out of you.
“I-I hope those tears aren’t for me Star,” his voice is gruff, he’s coughing too and you almost think you’re hearing things until your head snaps around and you can see him limping toward you a few feet away.
“Poe? Poe!” You’re slipping on the ground as you clamber to your feet and then you’re sprinting toward him. Uncaring that you were just on the ground sobbing because you thought he was dead. He’s covered in ash and his flight suit is torn in places and singed in others. You just manage to make out the little cuts littering his handsome face that you know he’ll think make him look tough later. Then when you’re within touching distance your hands reach for his face and you don’t even realise you’re kissing him until you are. You’re kissing Poe Dameron and it feels like heaven. You’re holding onto him for dear life as if he might disappear but relief floods your brain, he’s really there, he’s alive. Then suddenly your logical brain kicks in and you abruptly pull away looking at him wide-eyed with disbelief. Your hands move away and back again before resting on his shoulders and your brain just acts like you didn’t just kiss your best friend but he hisses and recoils one shoulder away from your hand.
“Yeah I’m gonna need you to put that back in,” he jokes like you’re not now just staring at his dislocated shoulder. Your relief-addled brain had clearly missed that upon your quick inspection as you raced over. You’re trying to focus on inspecting him for any further injuries now instead of focusing on the way he tasted like those blue candies he buys in bulk because he eats so many. You don’t even look up at him when he calls your name, busying yourself with looking over a cut on his other arm and thinking if you have enough first aid supplies to treat all of this. Then he says your name a bit more sternly, his working arm swatting both yours away and he reaches up to hold your face. He tilts your head up so you’re looking directly at him now and you watch his smile grow, “how long have you been holding out on me?” You must look completely dumbfounded because he chuckles a little before it turns into a cough and then a groan of pain as he buckles over a little. You’re quick to support him, the trained medic in you taking over as you wrap his uninjured arm around your shoulders.
“Come on,” you pause for a second to collect your thoughts and find the right words to say, “we can talk about this later.” It comes out more like a question, hope seeping out of every word.
“Oh we’re not done with this,” he gives you that smug look he does when he gets a bit cocky and you can’t help the way your elbow just ever so slightly nudges his ribs, sending him into another coughing fit and wiping the cocky look off his face.
You laugh just a little as he scolds you, trying and failing to use his ‘in charge commander’ voice, “not funny! Gonna write you up for that.”
“I’d like to see you try,” still chuckling, you glance at his dislocated shoulder, the side with which he writes and you see it click in his brain when he realises.
“Oh ha ha, laugh at the injured man. I can type with my other hand y’know,” your body’s still riding high on the adrenaline but your heart is calm. Poe’s here with you, you’re both alive and maybe you’re in love with each other and you just never realised.

And even if you are stepmom material, is Jake ready to let someone back in his life while still mourning the recent loss of his late wife?
Pairing: Jake “Hangman” Seresin x OC [Lawyer Natalie West]
WC: 5.3K
Warning: Age gap, cursing, smut, mention of death
Series masterlist here
It had been ages since you’d had a nightmare. Not since law school, maybe. Or the night before the Bar Exam.
You still had yet to go inside of Jake’s house. He was waiting for a day when Ellie wasn’t around, or for once you had met her. You respected that it was her home and space and you didn’t want to invade that.
In the dream, the door was open and you walked right in. Every inch of wall space was covered by pictures of Jake and a woman with perfect skin, pearly white teeth, shiny hair. He looked happy in the photos.
Happier than he had ever been with you.
The further you walked into the house, the more the hallways stretched out and narrowed, never ending, like mirror walls of a fun house at a carnival. Sweat started to prick at the base of your neck, between your breasts, under your arms. The lighting dimmed the longer you stayed in the house until you were squinting with each step. But somehow, the photographs were bright without any background lighting. You could perfectly see Jake’s wife smiling out at you. If you looked closely, her eyes followed you as you continued, like the Mona Lisa.
Finally, the hallway came to an end and you saw a lone figure sitting at a table, their back to you. You reached out a manicured hand to their shoulder and they turned.
It was Jake’s wife.
She smiled and for a moment you were still from shock. But when you tried to move, you were frozen in place. She stood up, towering over you.
“Do you think you’ll ever be enough?” she asked quietly, her voice slicing through the air, the words dribbling down your own throat and making a home for themselves inside of you. You felt cold, and breathless. Her voice was calm. “For him? For her?”
And then you woke up.
***
“All the files should be on my desk,” you said into the phone, pacing in front of an airport Starbucks. “ICID, that Blackstone acquisition company, the Singapore trust. They’re all there.”
“I’m all over it,” Rebecca said and you could hear her nails clicking on her keyboard as she spoke. “Go enjoy your long weekend with your super hot boyfriend. And remember that I’m jealous and I like Pinot Noir.”
You laughed and spotted Jake standing patiently with the bags. “Got it. Alright, if anything urgent happens just text me.”
“It will and I won’t,” she replied.
You chuckled and ended the call, crossing the walkway area to Jake and touching his bicep lightly. “Sorry about that. You ready?”
He smiled softly and for the hundredth time you looked back in awe of how casually beautiful he was. “Everything good at work?”
You sighed and grabbed the suitcase from him, falling into step as you headed for your gate. “It’s chaotic, but to be expected. Becks will hold down the fort while I’m gone. Well, her and the rest of the team, but she’s the one I trust the most.”
Jake nodded and readjusted his grip on his shoulder bag. You hadn’t pegged him for a leather messenger type of guy, but he pulled it off so easily you didn’t blink an eye. “You deserve a weekend away.”
“I am so excited,” you replied and he gave you a brilliant grin. “I’ve never been to Napa before.”
“You’re going to love it,” Jake murmured into your hair as he bent down to kiss your temple.
Jake was right. You loved northern California.
You had spent so much time in San Diego, with its blistering sun and ridiculously tanned men in swim trunks at the grocery store that Napa was a significant change of pace.
Jake had booked tickets to the local airport and had a car waiting when you got off, directly on the tarmac. He looked relaxed behind the wheel of the Mercedes convertible sedan as the two of you whipped down quiet streets before pulling up to a gated resort.
And even though it hadn’t been discussed beforehand, it was pretty obvious what the weekend meant. It wasn’t just your first trip away together, or your first time in wine country.
It was very apparent the moment Jake slid the room key and opened the door to reveal the hotel suite and you walked in to see the massive king bed in the center of the room, staring back at you.
Jake settled both suitcases against the wall, and dropped his bag, holding his hand out for your purse. Once he locked the door, he wrapped his arms around you from behind where you stood at the massive floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the vineyard below. You leaned your head back against his broad chest, breathed in his comforting scent, felt his warm hands press softly against your stomach as he nuzzled your neck.
“I’m so happy we’re doing this,” he whispered into your neck before his lips glued themselves to your skin and you nearly forgot how to breathe, the desperate need to feel him all over you taking over the one brain cell your entire body had decided to share at that moment.
You turned around and threaded your fingers into his golden hair, watched his eyes linger on your lips as your hips shifted forward to meet his and you felt him, hard, against your pelvis. Jake let out a small whimper as you swiveled your hips from side to side, the fabric of your jeans skimming across his chinos. “Me too,” you said quietly, looking up at him with a shy smile.
Jake growled, one hand pressed tightly against your lower back, the other cupping your neck and pulling you in for a kiss. It was deep and warm, Jake’s tongue pushing into your mouth. There was an air of desperation, and when he pulled away you felt like panting.
“Shit,” he muttered quietly, running one hand through his hair. “We gotta get out of this room or else I’m never going to take my hands off of you.”
“What if I don’t want you to take your hands off of me,” you whispered and he groaned.
“Honey, you’re killing me. I want that, trust me. But you deserve the full Napa experience. Which starts with an amazing dinner in,” he looked down at his watch, “thirty minutes. So we should get ready.”
You nodded, bending over to unzip the suitcase and behind you Jake groaned again, causing you to laugh. “Look away!”
He tossed his hands up in the air. “Alright, alright. I’m going to take a quick shower. Saves me from the unbearableness of seeing you strip down to change.”
You gave him a smirk and he padded off to the bathroom. When he emerged ten minutes later, you slid past him carrying a dress and heels and a makeup bag. Jake’s fingers grazed your arm, sending a shiver down your spine.
“Holy shit,” Jake said, standing up from where he had been lounging on the edge of the bed, as you exited the large bathroom. “You look phenomenal.”
Giving him a smile, you turned around. “Can you zip me up please?”
Jake stepped forward, fingers coming out to grip the zipper of your green satin dress, pulling it up slowly, cinching in the tight fabric to your curves. You spun around, Jake’s eyes sliding over your body from your head, past the plunging dress neckline, down to your Jimmy Choo heels.
“Well?” You asked.
He shook his head. “No words.”
You laughed, reaching down for your clutch and then out for his hand. “Come on, then. I’m starving.”
He was perfect. So perfect, you wanted to look for red flags but you couldn’t find any.
Not when he wordlessly switched your entrees because he could tell you liked his more. Not when he ordered four desserts because you couldn’t choose. Not when you went to use the bathroom and he stood up politely as you left the table, something you had only ever seen gentlemen do in black and white movies.
There was nothing wrong with Jake as his warm fingers dug into your lower back guiding you into the car. Or when his lips brushed yours for a moment as he pinned you against the wall of the hotel archway near the side entrance as you walked up to your room.
It took everything in your power not to moan as he dipped his head and pressed his lips to the delicate skin beneath your ear, one hand curving around to grab your ass.
Jake pushed open the door to the hotel suite and gave you a soft smile.
You tossed your purse onto the heap of open luggage, noting that Jake’s pieces were carefully packed up while yours were strewn about. You wondered if that bothered him.
Sitting down on the desk chair, you pulled off your heels and set them gently next to Jake’s sneakers from earlier. He crossed the room and shoved his hands in his pockets, looking out of place. You could tell the wheels were churning in his head.
“Jake?” Your voice was light and his ears perked up. “Are you OK?”
He nodded. Part of you expected him to take a seat but he simply stood in the middle of the room, exuding a nervous energy. “Yeah, sweetheart, I am.”
You shook your head, standing up and running your hands down his arms, knotting your fingers together before looking up at his handsome face. “You’re nervous, aren’t you?”
He nodded again and you gave him a small smile.
“That’s OK. We can take it slow. Watch a movie if you want. Or maybe you can read to me from that boring book you brought.”
That made him laugh. You had jokingly mocked the tome he had opened up on the hour and a half flight, a literal Dickens novel. Jake let your fingers slide from his, reaching up and pushing the hair from your face. “You are so beautiful,” he murmured. “So absolutely beautiful.”
You pushed him lightly backwards until his knees hit the bed and he sat. You slotted in between his legs, and felt Jake’s hands come to your waist. Running your fingers through his hair, you bent down and whispered in his ear. “Unzip me please.” And then you spun around, pulled your curled hair out of the way and let Jake undo the zipper. When you turned back around, you pulled each strap down slowly, shimmying it over your hips and stepping out of the dress to reveal a lacy black bra and matching thong. Jake let out an audible grunt and he leaned forward automatically, grabbing your sides and pressing a kiss to the inch of abdomen above your underwear line.
Jake pulled you onto his lap, straddling him, and you felt how hard he was already as you pushed down against him. His lips were all over your collarbone and neck, and you tossed your head back, basking in how good it felt to be touched by him. Jake nudged the strap of your bra down on one side, freeing your breast and taking it in his mouth, sucking hard which caused you to moan, wetness pooling between your legs. His tongue flicked you over and over, the other hand grabbing your covered breast.
Before you realized it, he had undone the clasp of your bra and tossed it across the floor, alternating kisses across your chest, hands warm on your bare back as he pulled you in closer. “Jake,” you gasped against him and he pulled away, looking up at you. His eyes were feverish. Darkened with lust, his lips plump, that small degree of stubble burning your skin in the most unbelievably filthy way. “Please, I need you.”
Your fingers tugged at his shirt, undoing the buttons clumsily and he reached out to help, pulling his shirt off seamlessly to reveal his toned, golden abdomen. You rolled off him and onto the bed and watched as he stood, taking off his pants leaving just a pair of tight black boxer briefs. Even though you had seen him naked from the waist down before, his size, even covered by the briefs, made your eyes boggle.
Jake climbed up to where you laid on the bed, skimmed a hand lightly down your side, making you shiver. He leaned down and pressed his lips to just above your belly button, one hand flattened against your hip.
“Can I?” He whispered quietly and you looked down, unable to hear him clearly.
“What?”
“Can I eat you out?” He asked and you saw a blush creep onto his cheeks. It was so endearing from someone so attractive, his eagerness to please, his ability to embarrass.
“God, yes,” you muttered and in an instant, he was between your legs, pulling your panties off, leaving sloppy kisses up your thighs from your knees until you felt him wedge your legs apart. For a moment, he was silent, immobile. You looked down to see him staring at you, and when he raised his eyes to yours, you swear you saw a twinkle.
And then he leaned down and licked a pathway up your seam up to your clit and you had to stop yourself from crying out. Jake was on a mission between your legs and you had the fleeting thought that he must be very good at his real job if he was this detail oriented and thorough in bed. He needed zero instruction. Your back arched off the bed as he swirled his tongue over your clit, one thick finger probing at your entrance before slowly pushing in. It was a tight fit, and you heard him choke out a pained, “Fuck,” as you whimpered while he slowly pressed inside of you. “Yes, baby,” he murmured, “taking it so well. You’re such a good girl for me.”
You couldn’t stop the moans as he began to pump his finger expertly inside of you, curling the tip up just right as his tongue parted your folds and circled your clit. Jake added another finger, slowly, and you winced at the pain, but your hips bucked up against his face, practically begging for more. “God, Jake, yes, just like that,” you screamed as he pumped faster, the wet sloppy sounds of your desperation filling the room. Jake’s other hand held your hips down as your breath caught in your throat, white spots forming in your vision.
“Please, baby girl,” he muttered against your core. “Cum for me.”
That was all you needed to break around his fingers and across his mouth, a strangled cry ripped from your throat, your hips pressed up as Jake pumped his fingers diligently, tongue flicking against your swollen clit as you rode out your orgasm until it was too much, too sensitive, and he pulled away. His lips glistened and he wiped them before sitting on his knees between your legs, a small wet patch forming on his boxers where he was leaking precum, cock impossibly hard and straining against the fabric. Jake’s hands were warm on your legs, and he looked up.
“Are you OK?” he asked delicately and you nodded, chest heaving. “Your legs are shaking.”
You chuckled. “Stop bragging.”
He laughed and stroked his fingers down your thighs a few times, reassuringly. “But you’re alright?” he asked again and this time there was a vulnerability that hadn’t been there before.
“Jake,” you said quietly. “You’re amazing. Don’t worry about me, OK? I’m having a great time. Now come here.”
You held out your arms and Jake laid down next to you, his arm heavy across your chest. You reached out to kiss his lips, tasting yourself on him, one hand trailing down to touch him. He was hard, and he hissed when your fingers stroked him over the boxers.
“Take these off,” you murmured. He hooked a finger underneath the waistband of the underwear and pulled them down, freeing his cock and you could feel the hard, wet tip as it rubbed against your hip. “Tell me what you want, baby.”
“Want you,” he muttered against your shoulder, lips kissing across your skin.
“You have me,” you replied softly. Jake looked up, eyes dark and searching yours.
“I brought condoms if we want to use them.”
You nodded. “I got tested since my last partner, and I’m on the pill, but it’s up to you. I trust you.”
“Well you know my history,” he said quietly.
“I’m OK with it if you are,” you said. “I’d like to feel you.”
Jake grunted and you felt him roll on top of you, hands spread across your hip bones, one thumb grazing over your still swollen clit. You drew in a sharp breath and Jake grabbed his cock with one hand, pumping himself slowly as he looked down.
“Please, baby,” you whined below him. “Need you now.”
Jake slid the tip through your wet folds, moaning at the noise it made in the quiet room. You shifted, hiking your hips up in an angle, and felt the thick head of his cock push at your entrance. With a slow breath, Jake hitched forward, pushing himself inside. “Holy shit,” he groaned, inching deeper. He was thick and you hissed as he worked his way inside of you. “Fuck, Nat, you’re so tight. Feel so fucking good, Jesus.”
Jake was a whining mess by the time he bottomed out inside of you, holding himself up by his forearms, his head dipped low into your shoulder. You wrapped your legs around his waist, pulling him in deeper, and he swore under his breath before starting to roll his hips into you, setting a brutal pace, leaving you gasping beneath him. Almost immediately he hit that spot inside of you that made your insides coil and you let out a string of moans as Jake continued to thrust.
“God, I’m close,” he whispered, his voice ragged. “Where should I cum?”
You tightened your legs around his waist, crossing your ankles over each other on his lower back. “Inside of me.”
“Fuck.” Jake locked his eyes on yours, pushing himself up a little bit higher so he could watch as his thrusts made your breasts bounce. You felt his hips stutter a little, and knew his orgasm was approaching by the way he sloppily continued to fuck into you. “God, baby, yes, holy shit you feel so good, gonna make me cum.”
“Please, Jake,” you moaned, head tilted to the side and you heard Jake cry out as he spilled inside of you, shallowly pumping three more times before collapsing against your chest, sweat dampening the edges of his hair near his forehead. Slowly, he pulled out and you winced. He got up and returned from the bathroom with a warm wet cloth, cleaning between your legs, before returning to the bed, pulling you into his arms.
Your hand grabbed his neck as he reached down to kiss you. When you broke apart, you snuggled into Jake’s side, his arm slung around you, your hand on his chest, one leg tossed over his. “Doing OK, honey?” he asked.
“I should be asking you that,” you said softly. “Are you OK? I know it’s the first time since…” You trailed off.
Jake sucked in a deep breath. “It had to happen at some point. And I’m glad it was with you.” Jake looked down at you, one hand brushing over your hair softly. “You’re not a rebound, Natalie. I hope you know that. I’m serious about you.”
Despite the fact that it was what you wanted to hear, there was still a part of you that balked at his words. Somewhere, deep down, you were worried about getting tied up in something so serious, so quickly. But you swallowed it down and simply kissed the smooth skin of his bare chest, tightened your grip on him. “I’m glad.”
You fell asleep in Jake’s arms. He felt safer than anything you had ever known.
***
“I’d like you to meet my friends,” Jake blurted out. You froze, phone sitting on speaker on the kitchen counter as you ate pickles straight out of the jar.
“Um…”
“It’s Bob’s birthday tomorrow and we’re having a little party,” he added quickly and you heard that vulnerability creep into his voice again. “Nothing huge, just the team. They’re kind of my family now.” There was a lump in his throat, you could hear it even over the phone. “I’d really like for them to meet you.”
“Of course,” you murmured, closing the pickle jar. “What time?”
That’s how you found yourself standing on the doorstep of a small bungalow holding a birthday gift on Friday night.
You had called Jake earlier to apologize that you’d be late. A last minute contract error had sent the team spiraling, and you only had enough time to rush home and change and grab the gift from where you had left it in the entryway and speed to the address Jake had texted you.
You were still forty-five minutes late.
Your hand shook as you reached out and rang the doorbell, smoothing down the off the shoulder top you wore with a pair of jeans and chunky heels. Jake hadn’t specified a dress code.
The door swung open and a tall guy with a mustache answered. His mouth curved up into a smile. “Well hello there,” he drawled. “You must be Natalie.”
You nodded and he stepped back, opening the door wider and letting you in.
“Hangman wasn’t kidding,” he said as he shut the door. “You really are out of his league.”
You chuckled. “Sorry, I didn’t catch your name.”
He held out a large hand for a shake. “Rooster, but you can call me Bradley.”
“Bradley it is.”
He gave you a dazzling smile. “Everyone’s out back with the birthday boy. Follow me.”
Bradley led you down a narrow hallway toward the back of the house and as you entered the kitchen you could hear music playing outside. He slid open a pair of glass doors and called out into the yard where a small group was crowded around a few tables covered in food, string lights crossing low above the adjacent seating area.
“Hangman, get your ass over here or I’m going to steal your girlfriend!”
You laughed and watched Jake’s head swivel around from where he stood, a smile glued to his face as he dropped mid-conversation and quickly made his way toward you. He clapped Bradley on the shoulder. “Get your own girl, Bradshaw,” he said. He leaned down and pressed his lips to yours. “Hey honey.”
“Where should I put this?” You held out the gift. Jake took it from you and placed it on a nearby table before putting his hand on your lower back.
“I want to introduce you to everyone,” he said, nudging you forward toward the group. “Guys, this is Natalie.”
You looked around. There was Bradley smirking into a beer bottle. A cute dirty blond with glasses, a beautiful brunette in a simple blue dress, a tall black guy with ridiculously chilled cheekbones, one shorter guy with a buzz cut, another taller one with a mustache, and a few others milling around behind the main group. “Hi,” you said softly, raising a hand, feeling a blush creep up on your neck. “So sorry I’m late.”
The brunette gave you a once over before smiling. “I’m Phoenix, or Natasha, whatever you prefer.”
You smiled, Jake’s hand still warm on your back.
“I’m Coyote,” cheekbones said, stepping forward and kissing your cheek.
“Payback,” said the other mustache, holding out a hand for a shake.
“Fanboy.” Short buzzcut leaned forward and kissed your cheek as well.
“And this is the birthday boy,” Bradley said, placing his hand firmly on the shoulder of the guy with glasses, who blushed.
“Bob,” he said quietly and you stepped forward, giving him a hug. He put his arms around you awkwardly.
“Happy Birthday, Bob,” you replied, pulling away. “So sorry I’m so late, and crashing your party.”
He smiled softly and it was endearing. “No worries. Jake’s said a lot about you, we’re all very glad to have you here.”
“Oh you have, have you?” you murmured, looking up at Jake with a smirk. He smiled down at you.
“Of course I have,” he replied. “Now that you’re introduced, let me get you a drink. Wine?”
You nodded and he stepped away toward the house, edging open the sliding door.
Turning back to the team, you watched their eyes land on you. They were friendly, but you knew what an attack position looked like. Jake was their person, and you were the outsider.
“So, Natalie, Jake tells us you’re a lawyer,” Phoenix said. “How do you like it?”
You shrugged. “Even lawyers hate lawyers.” That got a few laughs and you watched the group soften slightly. “But it’s not all that bad. Except for nights like tonight when I actually want to get somewhere on time but of course, something has to come up.”
The team nodded.
“Jake doesn’t talk about his job much,” you said. “Are you all pilots?”
“Aviators, ma’am,” Payback corrected.
“Aviators,” you repeated.
“Ignore him,” Fanboy rolled his eyes. “It’s the same thing.”
“Is not!”
“We’re all at Top Gun together,” Phoenix added and from her tone you could tell she was a natural leader. “Have been for about six years now.”
“And you’re all instructors?”
The team shook their heads. “Jake’s the only instructor,” Phoenix said softly. “Been that way since Lizzie. He just couldn’t afford to leave Ellie alone for long periods of time, you know? This job, it’s not exactly family friendly.”
There was something in the way they all looked when she said it. You could tell the impact of her death was still fresh to them.
Jake emerged from the house and rejoined the group. You took the wine glass, thankful for the distraction.
“Mind if I steal her for a minute?” he asked and the team murmured agreements, Jake’s hand already steering you toward a tree with string lights near the edge of the fence. “Thanks for coming,” he whispered.
You leaned in for a kiss. “Thanks for inviting me. Sorry again that I’m late.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Jake replied, gazing over at the group. “They’re good people.”
“I can tell after five minutes that they care about you a lot,” you said. “I hope I don’t disappoint.”
Jake turned to you, one hand coming out to stroke your cheek. “Honey, you could never disappoint. They’re going to love you.”
As the night wore on, you got more comfortable. Jake held you in his lap as the team shared embarrassing stories from their years together. You laughed and clapped as Bob blew out the candles on his cake, Payback and Fanboy rushing to smush his face into the frosting much to his dismay. Everyone was nice and easy going, and you could see why Jake liked them so much. He was a more casual, confident version of himself around them. It felt like there were no secrets, that he could just be himself.
It was dark, and Jake had gone inside to check on the babysitter with Ellie, leaving you sitting next to the fire pit. There was a warm hand on your shoulder, and then Bradley appeared off to the side.
“Mind if I sit with you?”
“Please.”
He took a seat next to you, his handsome face glowing near the fire. Despite only knowing him for a few hours, the moments of silence before Bradley spoke again were not uncomfortable. “Did Hangman ever tell you that he and I used to be enemies?”
“Oh really?” you asked.
He chuckled. “That’s a strong word I guess. Maybe just say we didn’t get along. But yeah, we were kind of on the outs. And then there was a really big mission a few years back, right after Ellie was born.” Bradley took a sip of his drink before continuing. “One of those types of missions where we thought someone wasn’t coming home. And in the end, that someone was me.”
He stopped talking and you saw the pain across his face. You couldn’t help yourself — you reached out and laid one hand on his where it sat on the armrest of his chair.
“I was out of weapons with someone right on my ass. And for the first time, I seriously considered what it would be like to die.”
Your thumb brushed across his hand gently before giving him a squeeze and pulling away. Bradley smiled softly.
“They almost had me in lock, I saw the smoke from their guns headed toward me. And then there was Hangman. He came in from behind and took them out. Saved my life.” He looked up. “He risked everything to come out there and rescue me. Ellie was three weeks old at that point. He had so much to lose, way more than I did.”
“He never told me,” you whispered softly, looking out at where you could faintly see Jake pacing on the phone inside the house. “But that sounds like Jake.”
Bradley nodded. “He’s different now. Becoming a dad made him like that.” There was a pause. “She made him like that.” You knew he was talking about Lizzie.
“What was she like?” you asked, and you regretted it the moment it slipped out of your mouth. Jake didn’t tell you much about Lizzie on purpose. They were his memories. His remembrances. It was his choice to share those with you.
“Lizzie was great,” Bradley said softly. “Beautiful. Smart. Generous. Always let one of our drunk asses stay at their house when we got a little too loaded. She was the mother of our group, quite literally. She was good for him. He needed her.” He stopped and looked at you. “She needed him, too.”
You nodded. “I know I’m young,” you murmured. “You guys probably think I’m too young for him. But I really care about Jake. A lot. He means something to me.”
“Did he tell you I’m Ellie’s godfather?”
You shook your head.
“He asked me a few weeks after that mission I told you about. It’s something I take pretty seriously. That little girl, she’s my world, too. She’s really something.”
“The way he talks about her. She sounds magical.” Bradley’s face lit up. “I’m not a parent. But she is special. Makes me feel like I’m part of something that’s more than just myself.”
The two of you were silent for a moment. Maybe it was the wine, or the darkness that existed outside of the immediate proximity to the fire. Perhaps it was the fact that Bradley seemed like the kind of guy who wouldn’t hold something against you. Either way, you opened your mouth. “I’m scared,” you said quietly. “That I’m not ready to be someone’s step mom. I don’t know anything about kids. What if she doesn’t like me? What if she doesn’t trust me? Or worse, what if he doesn’t trust me with her?”
Bradley’s chocolatey eyes locked onto your own. “No one is going to replace her mom. All she needs is someone who loves her.”
He paused and looked up. Jake was edging open the sliding door. Your time with Bradley was rapidly coming to a close.
“That’s all he needs, too. Someone who loves him.” Bradley’s voice grew quiet. “Someone who is going to stick around.”
A/N: Next chapter we'll get another Napa section (it was just getting too long!) and then we will FINALLY meet Ellie!

You need Gareth requests babe??? How about Some shower intimacy? Washing his pretty hair for him? God I’ve got it BAD for this guy
The way you always have my back with this 💕😭 I’m literally down so bad. I had a dream with Gwydion in it last night lmao and I can’t stop thinking about it.
Notes/Warnings: This was supposed to be fluff but I'm smitten so there's smut (sorry not sorry lmao). Minors DNI! Mentions oral sex and scary movies. Cursing! Female reader and Gareth are 20/21 with their own place, just trying to make it in the world <;3
Tumblr media
Gareth twisted and turned in the driver's seat of his car, sweating from the summer heat as he searched anxiously for his car keys. He’d literally just had them in his hands and now they were nowhere to be found. The heat made him anxious, and driving made him anxious, he wanted to go inside and lay on the floor and not have to think about a single thing ever again but he couldn’t. He had to find his damn car keys and drive to work. The only thing keeping him remotely sane was the knowledge that he’d see you when his shift was over. You’d promised to be waiting for him when he came home and he knew you would be - that is if he could find his fucking keys. Finally, his fingers brushed warm metal between the seats and he pulled, the keys clanking against the car's consul as he sighed. Today had been too long and it wasn’t even noon yet.
His shift at the theater was slow, it being a Tuesday. The summer heat had everyone at home, with no interest in driving anywhere even if there was AC. He swept stale popcorn and wiped down chairs for what felt like years until the sound of his watch beeping made him jump. 8pm, thirty minutes left, time to close up shop. He quickly locked up, checked the registers and slid the drawers into the safe, practically sprinting to the parking lot. He smoked on the ride home, windows rolled down and music blaring. Tomorrow was his off day and he was free, for twenty four hours, headed home to his sweet girl in their new apartment.
As he swung through the front door, you jumped up from the kitchen table, dropping the magazine in your hands. He smiled at your grin and the paper clippings littered around you - a stack of coupons and a grocery list neatly arranged in the middle of the chaos.
“Hi baby,” you said in a sing song voice, tip toeing to him and wrapping your arms around his neck. “I missed you today.”
He kissed you softly, “I missed you too.”
“How was work?” You mumbled, still holding him close to you, nuzzling your face into his shirt and wrinkling your nose at the synthetic butter smell.
“Boring,” he laughed, “only had two people come in today for License to Drive.”
“I can’t believe they’d rather watch that than Killer Klowns,” you shake your head, making him laugh again. “Imagine Chrissy Cunningham’s reaction to Jojo.”
He shakes his head, curls sticking to his forehead from sweat and chuckles, “I still can’t believe Jason took her to see Bloodsport. I had three people complain about her screaming so loud.” He huffed.
You roll your eyes, smirking at the picture.
“Oh!” You exclaim, “I almost forgot, your mom called this afternoon. She needs us to watch Rosie on Saturday so she can pick Sarah up from summer camp.”
Gareth groaned. He loves his little sisters but he couldn’t wait until Rosie was old enough to stay home alone for a few hours. She’s 8, and Sarah is 16 now, so she usually stayed with her. It had been easier when he didn’t work long hours, before you had gotten your job as a waitress, but you both made it work. Greg, his step-dad, traveled for business now so he wasn’t home as often as he used to be. His mom, who also worked, relied on the two of you for extra help with him being gone. It was decent parenting practice for two young twenty something’s, but he hated having less time with you under any kind of circumstances.
You gave him a knowing look, and planted a kiss on his cheek. “It won’t be for more than a few hours, my love. We’ll still have all night to ourselves.” You winked, and he blushed.
Pulling you into his arms he murmured, “Still not enough time with you,” planting kisses on your forehead. “Need all of it.”
You giggle, playfully grabbing his face and pulling him to you till your noses touched.
“And what will you do if that’s not possible, hmm?”
He played along, looking serious. “Well I’ll just have to make sure I use every moment then.”
He grabbed your hands, taking control of your limbs and walked you back to the table. Clumsily he grabs the scissors you’d been using and comically tries to cut one out while still holding your hand. “Looks like we have to finish cutting these out together.”
You laugh loudly, swatting him away as he feigns being offended.
“My beautiful girlfriend doesn’t want my help?” He throws a hand to his chest, raising his eyebrows. “Rude.”
“So rude, I know.” You giggle, running a hand through his hair. He leans into it, the touch of your fingers feeling divine. The blood flow goes from his cheeks to his pants as you scratch his scalp, tugging a little at his hair and kissing his jaw.
“I have an idea.” You say, smiling up at him.
“And what’s that?” He replies, eyes closed as he continues to let you play with his hair.
“Since we’re savoring every minute, why doesn’t Gareth the Great join me in the shower?” You ask, a mischievous look on your face.
“That sounds like a great idea.” He smiles back, eyes open now, and scoops you into his arms carrying you towards the bathroom.
The tiny apartment isn’t much, but you both have managed to make it homey and personal. The street lamps outside shine through the cheap blinds onto a worn out sofa (compliments of the local thrift store). Dried flowers adorn the tv stand, Gareth’s VHS collection organized neatly against the wall on wire shelves next to a stereo and stacks of tapes. There are unframed posters littering the walls, along with Polaroids and drug store prints of family photos. The bedroom is littered with clothes, your waitress uniform on the back of a chair and your old desk piled with papers and notebooks. The kitchen walls hold mugs and pans, pancake mix and macaroni boxes tucked away on the counter with mail and old receipts. The bathroom, where Gareth places you on the tiny counter near the sink, is a faded cream color. One of your paintings (a landscape of lovers lake) and mismatched towels hang next to the old tub, now doubling as a shower. He pulls the pink plastic curtain to the side, letting the water run warm before turning on the shower head and reaching for you.
You lean into him, slightly sleepy as you relax, letting him gently pull off your worn out band shirt and pajama shorts. You tug away his uniform, sliding off the counter and gathering the crumpled clothes, tossing them into a hamper in the hall. He’s watching you lazily, eyes roaming over your naked body. That’s one thing about him that’s never changed. He’s seen you naked hundreds of times, I mean you’ve been dating for two years now, but he still looks at you the same way he did the first time. A sweet smile covers his face, his pretty hazel eyes roaming over you as he pulls you in for another kiss.
“You look pretty today,” he whispers, brushing your hair out of your face and wrapping an arm around your waist.
“Thank you,” you whisper and kiss his nose, pulling away to climb into the shower.
The warm water feels heavenly on your skin, soothing the ache in your legs from standing all day. You tilt your face up and let it rain over you as you feel him climb in behind you, pulling the curtain closed. Gentle hands rub the tension out of your shoulders as you rinse your hair.
“Let me do it.” He says, lathering shampoo in his hands before pulling you out of the stream of water. He carefully scrubs at your scalp, brow furrowed in concentration as he makes sure to get the grime off you. You relish the way he’s pressed up against you while rinsing your hair, pausing only to plant tiny kisses on your neck and jaw as he works away the days stress.
“Tell me about your day, pretty girl.” He says, running conditioner through your hair and working out any knots.
“Also boring,” you murmur, “just the regulars today. Dan said Billy’s back in town. Came in last night before close with some new girl.”
He nods, listening as he grabs your favorite body wash.
“Got $15 in tips though, so not a bad day. Mornings are nice because it’s cooler so we still get the usual rush.”
He squirts the bottle onto your chest, getting too much on you and you chide him.
“Hey, don’t waste that, it’s my favorite.”
“I would never,” he smirks, rubbing his palms on your chest as he starts to wash your body. He knows what he’s doing, and you let him do it, squirming as you feel an ache in your core. Tease.
You finish rinsing off, feeling a little light-headed, and pull him under the stream of water.
“Your turn lover boy.” You smile, watching him lean into the water and close his eyes. He’s beautiful really, broad shoulders and soft skin. You admire the way the water cascades over him, catching on the happy trail on his torso and pooling at his feet. Lathering shampoo in your hands, you carefully run your fingers through his hair, massaging his scalp. Free from sweat and buildup, his curls twist into wild shapes as you scrub away at him. He hums softly at your touch, letting you rinse away the soap with agile hands. He loves it when you touch him, especially when you play with his hair. You’re the only one allowed to do it, and you take advantage of that frequently by touching his hair whenever you can.
“Lean back for me honey,” you say, the last of the soap running down the drain as rinse his hair, careful to make sure it doesn’t get tangled. He leans in to kiss you before you can put any conditioner in his hair, and you let him. A little moan escapes your mouth as bites your lip a bit, hands roaming down your ass and thighs.
“Look whos already so wet for me.” He jokes as he pulls away, letting you put conditioner in his hair. You slap him lightly on the cheek as a response, continuing your work. As you get to washing his body, you pretend not to notice the semi-hard on he has going on. Instead, you tease him, getting down on your knees to wash his thighs. Everything about him is attractive to you but his thighs make you absolutely feral, they’re broad and muscled, with a soft layer of chub. Looking at them makes you want to bury your face into them, or ride them into oblivion. You roam your hands on his inner thigh, smirking as you get closer to his crotch, his dick getting more pink and hard by the second.
“Need some help?” You ask, voice husky, as you drag the tip of your finger along his erection. He whines a little, nodding, and you kiss his thigh. Situating yourself comfortably, you use your soapy hands to grasp his cock, slowly pumping as you get another whimper from him. You look up, letting the sudsy water drip down on you. You watch him happily as he fists your hair in his hand. It’s nothing complicated, just a little fun while you bathe, but to him it feels pornographic. The soapy water slides along your boobs as they rise and fall from your breathing, you staring up at him with doe eyes, your hands grasped around him. He’s trembling a bit, feeling particularly sensitive and you seem to know it as you pump him faster, eliciting groans from his lips. All it takes is a little kiss from you, on his tip, and he’s cumming all over your face and chest, cock throbbing.
“Jesus Christ, sweetheart.” He groans, grasping onto your shoulders as he spills his seed all over you.
You giggle, gripping at his thighs and enjoying the way he’s practically collapsing into your arms. You stand carefully, legs a bit numb from your position and you rinse off again, letting him help you and smother you with more kisses. He shuts the water off and grabs a towel, tossing it over your head and rubbing. You peek out from under the cloth with a giggle as he lifts it off you, moving to your body. Your hair is flying everywhere now and your checks are blushed.
“All done.” He says, smacking your ass lightly and you step out of the shower, watching him dry himself off next. He’s so pretty.

For the fic title game, yet another shamelessly stolen song lyric: hearts will break (for future's sake)
EEEEEEE BRUH I’ve never heard that song and have no clue what it is but what a BANGER line
Okay so I’ve never done this with the newsies fandom only because i haven’t really written much for it, but I’m a sucker for reconciliation. Just an absolute slut for Right Person Wrong Time, so I think that’s what I would make this hypothetical fic about.
omg omg omg and it would be one of those double timeline fics where it jumps between the past and present as a nod to the (for future’s sake)
my vibe for the Past Timeline is: Jack and Davey meet and hit it off VERY quickly because they are them and inexplicably drawn to each other. I’m thinking college freshman era, maybe they’re roommates?? Yeah, yeah they’re roommates let’s roll with it. Past Timeline would ideally jump around through their four years of college in order of relevance to the Current Timeline (we’ll get there, bear with me. There’s a bear with me. His name is Fred. He’s a menace) but begin with their last interaction/falling out and end with their first meeting— Think JICFEBDHGA, If the scenes were the alfabético and alphabetical order was chronological.
The general vibe I’m going for is Jack being head over heels in love with Davey and Davey just having NO FUCKING CLUE because Jack is his friend, his buddy, his rotten soldier, his sweet cheese, his good time boy. But like, Davey is just so Repressed (not in a gay way, he knows he’s 💅🏽, he just doesn’t talk about his feelings and isn’t in touch with them because Oldest Brother Syndrome) that he’s like “yeah this Amazing Feeling and Deep Connection is just friendship :)”.
Meanwhile Jack desires this fucking weirdo he’s stumbled upon carnally and is literally obsessed with him and always dropping casual “I love you’s” “I would marry you in a heartbeat” “for real I want you in my life forever” bc he’s got that All Or Nothing personality and Davey’s dumbass is just like OH YOU!
That all ends poorly because eventually Jack’s like. Dude I am IN LOVE WITH YOU!!! But there is An Obstacle (maybe Davey’s already met someone else and Jack’s too late, maybe Davey thinks he doesn’t feel the same??) and jack… hoooooo boi that guy can NOT handle a) rejection (rejection sensitive dysphoria anyone???) and 2) the idea of davey Not Choosing Him so he DIPS. Skips out on graduation, and moves back to his hometown (Santa Fe)
This is the vibe for Present Timeline: it’s been several years, Davey hasn’t thought about jack in ages (that’s a lie, he was having his midnights moment like. Last night. CAUSE HE WAS SUNSHINE I WAS MIDNIGHT RAIN! ) but Jack’s in Santa Fe anyway and is married and has a kid according to Facebook a few years ago so rip Davey trying to find the colors jack painted his life :/ bc of That WS Just Friendship he hasn’t found anything CLOSE in ages. But surprise! He stops for covfefe and guess who the FUCK is the barista? In New York? Guess who the FUCK has been living there with his daughter (sorry I’m in a very Single Father!Jack mood) for SIX MONTHS and never said a WORD to Davey??
Anyway, this timeline would go in straight chronological order and follow them reconnecting, hashing out their old shit, deciding if they want to be together (they do) and what that looks like. So think 0123456789 numerical order being chronological.
So on the whole, the order would be something like:
0J1I2C3F4E5B6D7H8G9A (come out looking like a fucking verification code 😭) if that makes sense???
Anyway. That was a lot, whoops! But this was actually so fun to do while I wait for my laundry! :D

A/N: I have been struggling with writers block so I’ve been posting some works I wrote a while back but never put up. Let me know what you think. Feedbacks a good motivator! In my head I picture Shelley Hennig as Ivy, Diana Silvers as Marina, Daniel Sherman as Declan, Lili Reinhart as Mackenzie, and Camila Mendes as Bianca.
SUMMARY: Ugh, high school. Best four years of nothing. Raging mood swings and sporadic acne. All on top of balancing mean girls, douche bag guys, and cocky jocks. Best four years? Yikes image peaking in high school.
Tumblr media
I can list several things I cannot stand. I could start with my Mom’s overbearing need to talk about her high school glory days, or my Dad’s never-ending trophies in nearly everything. My list continues for things such as romantic comedies, jean leggings, and platinum blonde hair. Do not tell Ivy about that she is one break-up away from cutting her hair and dying it blonde. I love her to pieces but she is a wildcard with a knack for trouble and a high social media following. Trust me when I say do not look at her Tik Tok. Her high following and verification coming from her looks and problematic prank videos.
“Hello? (Y/n) are you listening?” Marina asked, sitting across from me at the lunch table she types away on her laptop rambling profusely. She delicately placed flowers through her hair with half of it pinned up. She wears a cute white camisole with a beige boho cardigan that reaches the hem of her jeans. Resembling a pretty hippy, it works on her. Apologizing, I ask her to repeat herself but she only rambles about Ivy being in detention. Oddly enough Marina is on the opposite end of the continuum from Ivy. Not only the cheer captain, but one can make it a game of trying to find what club she is not a part of. Even started her own anti-bullying campaign. “So you’re not listening?”
“I’m sorry Mina. I didn’t get much sleep last night because somebody was busy practicing his guitar at all hours of the night.” I groan looking over at the guy’s table. It was a mixture of faces in the masses. No set groups at their table, the mix of guys come from all sports teams and clubs. At the center of the table sits Timmy laughing at something. You know those people you grew up with when you were little but now they just annoy the shit out of you. Yeah, that’s Chalamet, as cliche, as it is the perfect-haired idiot, is my neighbor. We grew up next to each other, yes there is a picture of us bathing together as kids. It is the bane of my existence. Yes, we are still friends but more so a down low thing. Him being the soccer goalie made him this big deal and me being virtually no one makes our friendship odd at school.
“I ordered our homecoming tickets online,” Opening my mouth to protest she quickly shrugs me off. “You have to come, it'll be no fun without you.”
“You’ll both have dates. What am I going to do? Just linger awkwardly?” Biting into my cold fry it lacks salt making me want to spit it out. Marina closes her laptop and turns to her salad she brought from home.
“Ivy and I could find you a date,” Though I have every intention of saying no I miss my opportunity as Mackenzie and Bianca sit next to us. In their cheering uniforms, they wear it every day like it is a badge of honor. It screams pick-me but everyone does pick them so the behavior is enabled.
“Hey, Marina, where's Ivy?” Mackenzie asks, scooting to the side allowing her some space both she and Bianca fail to spare me a single glance. I can see on Marina’s face that she has no interest in talking to either of them but she plants a warm smile on her face. Despite her distaste for the two most clueless people on the planet that is what I love about Marina, she is kind to everyone.
“In detention for calling Coach Hoffman an asshole,” The laugh that leaves my lips contrast the two girls’ wide eyes.
“Anyways we came over with invites for you and Ivy. Party at my place tonight. My parents are out of town.” Bianca’s raven black hair is straightened to perfection. She shuffles through her Michael Kors purse before pulling out two envelopes. Marina looks at me as she thinks it over in her head.
“Ivy will kill us both if we turned this down so yeah we’ll all be there,” For the first time since they sat at the table their eyes drift to me. I smile sheepishly as they look me up and down. Mackenzie grits her teeth as she smiles at me.
“That’s the thing (Y/n) you need an actual invite to get in and I only have a certain amount. I’ll let you know if anything changes,” I am no idiot, I know she is lying, the faux smile and honey tone holds more poison than anything.
“Problem solved.” Handing me half of her invite I bite back a laugh as Marina rips it in half. Both Bianca and Mackenzie feign chuckles as they excuse themselves leaving the two of us to watch them purposely walk by the guys’ table. Marina shakes her as she turns back to her salad. “Those two are something else.”
“I’ll catch you later I have a photography club meeting,” I say and Marina only smiles before going onto her phone. Unlike Bianca and Mackenzie, I actually have to pass the guy’s table to walk over to the dish return. It is okay though because none of them even turn from their conversations except one pair of eyes. Timothee’s lips pull into a smirk before he shoots me a wink. Smiling sarcastically I flipped him off before continuing on.
Mrs. Klotz wastes no time diving into the agenda for the following weeks. Since I arrive a few minutes late it leaves me with the bottom of the barrel for what event to cover. Of course, there is only one event that no one wants to do, the homecoming dance. As the meetings adjourned I wait for everyone to leave the room, the meeting was brief, and yet so much was covered.
“Mrs. Klotz please don’t make me cover the homecoming dance. I don’t even want to go.” I say, closing the club binder she places it in her desk before resting her hands on the desk. She wears glasses that frame her face with her auburn hair, all the guys like to creep on her due to her being fresh out of college.
“I thought it’d be perfect for you (Y/n). I even saw you purchased a ticket,” Mrs. Klotz explains as her eyebrows pull together slightly she tilts her head to the side. I mirror her expression before I remember what Marina had said.
“No, that was Marina. I’m pretty sure what she is attempting is entrapment,” I say, sitting on the edge of the desk behind me I watch as Mrs. Klotz frowns.
“Well, first that is detention for Miss Monroe. The online ticketing policy states students cannot buy tickets for other students,” My stomach flips for a moment as I realize what I have done.
“Did I say Marina sorry I get those two mixed up. It was Ivy who ordered the tickets,” Knowing Ivy would not care as she has been in detention more than she has ever been in class. None of this matters as Mrs. Klotz only apologizes before writing Ivy up and telling me there is no one else who can do it. “I assume you can give this detention slip to Miss Porter.”
In the hallway, I stop as my phone vibrates in my pocket. Ivy sent a text in the group chat telling us to meet her in the computer lab. Walking through the halls my arms fall at my side like dead limbs as I sulk through the corridors. It smells like sweat and pizza from the cafeteria and every couple of lockers is a candy wrapper or abandoned worksheet. Whoever the hell said high school was the best four years of your life, lied. In the computer lab, both Marina and Ivy are already there. Ivy is wearing a tube top with a denim jacket and legging. She is breaking the dress code as usual but it is getting to a point where the faculty do not even care what she wears. I am almost certain Ivy could show up in a bikini and no one would be fazed. Handing her the detention slip her eyebrows pull together.
“Wait what did I do this time?” She asks, explaining the situation she laughs at me before turning to Marina, “Since I am now the sacrificial lamb I would love to talk about that super cute sheer tank top you refuse to let me wear.”
“You get to wear it once then it goes back in my closet,” Marina says, rolling her eyes at the extortion. I look to Ivy asking why she summoned both of us to the computer lab but she only shrugs saying she got bored. There are still ten minutes to spare before the warning bell goes off. Marina hands Ivy the invite to the party and the two giggle amongst themselves about it but I only groan.
“Wait, this is a perfect time to figure out a date for (Y/n) for homecoming. How about Jack Ribas?” Marina says, looking through her Instagram followers as the short boy came to mind I can remember he was my chemistry partner.
“Tiny hands,” I cannot fight the grimace on my face as Ivy laughs before going on her Instagram. The real answer being his ex-girlfriend, she rarely speaks and I am sure she is the reason he has not dated in over a year.
“What about Mark Warshaw?” Ivy asked, earning a nudge from Marina as she is clearly not taking it seriously.
“He smells terrible. Come on,” I say, leaning back in my seat this only furthers how much I do not want to go to homecoming. Marina continues looking through her phone and I cannot say I do not appreciate her wanting to help.
“Terrance Avecedo?” As the name left her lips I could not help but stare at her with eyes I can only imagine appeared crazed.
“You mean my cousin? Dude,” I say as Marina apologizes profusely there is one guy I would not absolutely hate the idea of going with. Just my luck he and a few of his buddies walk by the computer lab. Declan Knight, once again it’s super cliche but he’s the football quarterback and captain. Timothee found it more than hilarious my crush on the 6’2 curly-haired beau.
“Hey, Ivy. Hey, Marina,” He says, popping his head into the computer lab and they both say hey Declan at the same time before he turns to me. “Hey, (Y/n).”
The feeling of panic rushes every inch of me as I force out a chuckle before breathlessly saying, “Hey.”
“Real smooth,” Fortunately Ivy says this as Declan is already continuing on wherever he is walking toward. Marina once again nudges Ivy as I put my head down groaning loudly.
“I am going to my locker. Please leave me to sulk about my day in peace.” I say and I hear Marina yell love you, saying it back I do not turn around. Everyone is in the hallways always playing it dangerously close to the late bell. At my locker, I can see Timothee walking toward my locker.
“Double-A.” He says, looking at me with his usual shit-eating grin, I frown as we rarely speak in school.
“Timmy. Shouldn’t you be ducking behind something to talk to me here?” He only chuckles. Girls would kill for him to walk up to the locker and chat yet I would pay him right now to walk away from me. Only wearing a simple long sleeve shirt, jeans, and converse he is still somehow a hot commodity at school.
“Funny. Also what the hell were you watching last night. It gave me soft porn vibes but very cinematic,” He asks and I shift on the balls of my feet as his grin widens. So I decided to watch that movie 365 on Netflix which was one of the cringest things I have ever seen.
“Spying on me much?” But once again I earn a laugh before he says that I should close my curtains more often. “Maybe don’t look in my window.”
“Noted. Where’s your girls at?” He asks scanning the hall for Marina and Ivy I close my locker. Crossing my arms I look at him asking who wants to know but the smirk on his lips reappears. “The only man in your life. No, your Dad does not count. So that leaves me, you are very welcome.”
“I can assure my love. You would not be in my life even if you were the only man on the planet.” I said, watching as he places his hand over his heart feigning pain. He wastes no time in quoting Marina’s anti-bullying campaign motto, Spread the Love. “Shut up jackass.”
“Timothee,” Mackenzie says and the high pitch of her voice makes me grimace as I look away. She pulls him into a kiss that lasts a couple of seconds longer than needed. The two are the most indecisive couple I have ever seen. I’ll break it down like this, today is Wednesday. Monday they were dating, Tuesday they were not, today is a big question mark and tomorrow is still a coin toss. This does not stop Timmy from being a total whore when they are broken up. I’m pretty sure Mackenzie still does not know Timothee hooked up with Bianca. I narrow my eyes as Mackenzie looks at me as she kisses Timothee. The urge to promise her I have no interest in the mop-headed idiot is strong but instead, I just stand there.
“Hey still here,” Placing my hands in my pocket I look down at the tiles as Mackenzie pulls back.
“Gosh, (Y/n) I am so sorry. Since when were you friends with my ex-boyfriend?” She asks, smiling kindly but it is clearly fake. I have no intention of outing our lifelong friendship but I have no time to even say anything before Timothee chimes in.
“We’re not just asking for some notes. What does it matter anyway?” Timothee asks, looking at Mackenzie who gives him a doe-eyed pout. Gagging as she pulls him into another kiss.
“I know you miss me.” She says before stalking off and I cannot help but now smirk at him.
“Healthy thing you got going there,” I say but he rolls his eyes before walking down the hall away from me. The rest of the day feels uneventful, the girls and I agree to meet at my house to get ready for the party. Which translates to them already ready and helping me insisting on staying home.

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3
--------------------------------
Chapter 4
Her workforce is young. She is the oldest by eight years, at least, but at least four of her employees are exactly half her age. So when the half yearly night out rolls around and it’s organised this time by one of the youngest, she contemplates not going. The restaurant is a good choice, a sushi place that she loves so that’s fine, but the bar and the club they’re going to afterwards she’s never even heard of. When she googles the club, she realised it’s one she used to frequent at least five refurbishments ago.
Still, she will go out for the whole night; she knows how much the girl who organised it looks up to her, as both a woman in business and as a mentor, and she’ll be damned if she discourages any of her staff in any way at all.
The food is great, it’s an upmarket place and she picks up the bill, to much genuine protest, and she is promised by them she won’t buy a single drink for the rest of the night.
The bar is fun, a good mix of people, and she is able to stay at the table for most of the night, discussing the love lives of her tipsy employees and shelling out advice to her much more inexperienced crew.
“He just can’t get me off! Oh fuck, I’m so drunk! I am so sorry, I shouldn’t have said that to you! I will hand in my resignation on Monday,” Lindsay says dramatically, covering her face in shame.
“Don’t be a knob, Linz!” she reassures her, laughing. “I distinctly remember you wiping puke off my chin the last night out we had. These nights out have nothing to do with work. This is just a bunch of people who spend nine hours a day together letting off steam. I’m not your boss on these nights, just a friend. Anyway, back to your guy. He doesn’t make you cum?”
“Not once,” she says regretfully.
“He doesn’t listen to you?”
“What do you mean?”
“When you tell him what he needs to do, does he listen to you?”
Lindsay scoffs at the question. “I don’t tell him. Surely he should just know. He’s been with women before!”
She stares at the younger woman, incredulous. “What? You never tell him? Maybe he’s been with women and that’s how they liked it. But everyone is different. One woman’s slapped ass is another woman’s neck bite, we all like different things. You are allowed to tell him what you need from him, you are doing both of you a disservice by allowing him to carry on doing shit that doesn’t work for you, Linz. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over my years is that men fucking love direction, and the ones that don’t are the ones you discard very quickly.”
Her thoughts turn to Ivar for the millionth time this week. The guy who takes direction like an absolute champ. She hasn’t messaged him like she said she would and she almost pulls her phone out before she is distracted.
“Really? So you just come out and tell them straight up when they aren’t doing it right for you?” Lindsay asks in amazement.
“Well, I’m usually a bit more encouraging. Something like, “I like that but can you do it to the left a little?”, or “Oh fuck, that’s amazing, go harder/faster/slower”, or “please pull my hair, please I really like that, will you do that for me, please?” She giggles at Lindsay’s face. “Stuff like that, encouraging but instructive. And you have to be open to them doing the same and don’t take it personally. Fucking someone new is a chance to expand your sexual repertoire.”
They are pulled out of their conversation by Amelia ushering them to drink up and go to the club.
Lindsay shares her well imparted wisdom with the rest of the cab on the way to the club and it’s like she can see light bulbs going off in their heads. It makes her laugh out loud but she also feels sorry for them, and a little exasperated.
“Guys, Jesus fucking Christ!” She throws her hands in the air, shaking her head. “Take charge of your own pleasure! Do not allow yourself to suffer through years of mediocre sex because you are too shy to say anything. Own. Your. Shit. I say that in the office, but that also applies in the bedroom.”
They skip the line at the club, thank God; it’s cold and her feet are aching from the ridiculous heels she’s wearing. They are shown to their table by a hostess and looking around the place she can see absolutely not one single person over the age of 30 in here. Still, they have their table and table service so she will only have to venture into the crowd when she needs to pee.
She orders bottles of liquor and champagne to the table, she can treat them, they keep her business successful after all. She doesn’t know any of the music but Amelia assures her that the music goes “old school” after midnight and she will enjoy it.
She enjoys the company for an hour before the music switches and she is in her element. What’s old school to them is just her jams and they manage to persuade her on to the dance floor. It’s been a hot minute since she danced in a club but the music and the alcohol soon trick her brain into believing she’s twenty five again, and she’s shaking her ass without a care in the world.
As she raps along to the music, she spins around and her eyes catch him at the side of the dance floor.
Ivar.
In this fucking club. Staring at her like a predator stares at their prey.
She stops dead still staring at him. She doesn’t mean to but she’s never seen him in this context before, not since the first night they met at a pub. This is different. He knows nothing about this side of her. The drunk woman letting her hair down, he only knows what she allowed him to know. This is new. She feels totally exposed to him at this moment and she doesn’t know what to do.
His face is neutral, despite his eyes not leaving her. His gaze is hypnotic, making her skin break out in goosebumps and the hairs stand up on the back of her neck.
A jealous buzz courses through her when she watches a very pretty blond girl walk up to him, snake her hand over his shoulder and rise up onto her tiptoes to whisper something in his ear. She doesn’t know what to do with the feeling so she shoves it low, ignoring it completely. Ivar glances at the blonde quickly then shakes her hand off his shoulder, his eyes back on her. All of a sudden, she’s grabbed by Lindsay and spun around to dance again and when she looks back, he’s gone. She starts to wonder if her drunk brain has made it all up.
On her way back to her table she passes a rowdy group and Ivar is on the edge of it, laughing. She almost walks by him without saying anything but then she rethinks; is it too rude to just ignore him like that? They have been fucking for months, spending loads of time together and it seems wrong to just walk past as if they are strangers. So she stops just next to him and taps his arm.
“Hey! Are you having a good night?” she asks jovially, happy in her decision until his face turns to her and it’s nothing short of thunderous.
“What?” he retorts harshly, as if she’s interrupted the most important moment of his life. “Do I know you?”
It’s dark so the fact a blush immediately floods her face is imperceptible, thank God. She feels shocked and disappointed, but overall she just feels pissed the fuck off. She isn’t trying to bring their thing out into the open, expose it to his friends; that’s the last thing she wants, but she isn’t an asshole who just ignores people either.
He, on the other hand, clearly doesn’t have a problem with being an asshole.
“Really?” she asks with raised eyebrows and an amused smile on her face. She observes his group: some look at her, some don't. “Not even a civilised hello, hey?”
“Let’s not “pretend” shall we?” he retorts, and continues to stare at her.
“It’s okay, I’m sorry, I must have been mistaken, I thought you were someone I knew. Clearly not.” she says coldly, nodding firmly and walking back to their table. She sits with her glass of champagne for a minute, stewing over the coldness he’s shown her. Not six days ago that man was treating her like a Queen, and even though she left abruptly that night, she thought he understood why. The same man who has been in her bed almost every weekend for months couldn’t even say hi. Now, apparently, in an unexpected social meeting, he turns into a completely different human.
She drains her glass and shakes the funk off, allowing herself to be dragged back out onto the dance floor where she doesn’t even look over at him once.
------------------------------------
His eyes are on her, though. He knows he shouldn’t have been so rude, but everyone is there. He can’t explain her to anyone, nor does he want to. He’s hurt by the way she left last weekend and she hasn’t messaged him like she said she would so that just adds salt to his wounds.
She is his alone. The one thing in his life he doesn’t have to share with anyone and that changed last weekend when Hvitserk barged in. Ivar doesn’t blame his brother – there was no way he could have known, given the circumstances – he’s just pissed off that the moment he invited her into his life everything unravelled.
He should have just gone to hers like always.
He is also in shock that she came up to him. She had been clear about wanting their…whatever this is… to be a secret, so he just assumed she would keep her distance. Typical of her, direct as always.
Why the fuck was she in this club anyway? Who the hell were all those people she was with? She was the last person he thought he would see tonight, in this club anyway.
He had planned on texting her for a hookup so he could get out of this shit early. She’d already told him she had plans tonight, but he was hoping she would have let him come over when she got home. And he was hoping she didn’t have plans tomorrow so he could stay at hers overnight, like he usually does. He loves waking up at her house. It’s peaceful and calm and she is there.
Now he’d fucked it with his shitty attitude, his immature reaction to her.
Hvitserk catches his eye and shakes his head slowly, looking disappointed at his brother. Ivar points his finger at him, as if daring him to say anything.
Ivar tries to pluck up the courage to go and speak to her for the rest of the night, but as he watches her dancing, drinking and laughing with her friends she appears to be totally unbothered by their encounter and he just can’t bring himself to do it. She obviously doesn’t give a shit so why should he?
------------------------------------
She leaves at 2am. Straight into a cab, home, into the shower and into her bed. She has no plans tomorrow, thankfully, because she’s already got a headache developing. While she showers, she ponders what happened with Ivar and puts her feelings down to lack of common courtesy, nothing more. She downs some water and two preemptive ibuprofen, and falls asleep in no time.
Her phone ringing wakes her up. She reaches for it and sees Ivar’s name on her screen. The time is 3.30am. She is definitely not interested in a hook-up tonight, so she turns her phone off mid ring.
The doorbell ringing wakes her again. She suddenly has a panic that Steven could have been trying to get in touch with her about the children and she drunkenly turned her phone off. She runs to her window and opens it, looking down over her driveway and her front door. It’s not Steven.
It’s Ivar.
She tries to close her window quietly but he’s already seen her.
“Open the door, let me in. Please!”
Fuck! She can just imagine Nicole serving this piping hot tea up in their group chat right this minute, giving their boring lives some much needed drama.
She leans out the window.
“Shut the fuck up!” she whispers through gritted teeth.
He whisper-shouts back. “Let me in!”
“Oh for fucks sake, Ivar!”
She doesn’t even bother to pull on her dressing gown. She flies down the stairs before he starts making any more noise and opens the door in a bralette and matching tiny shorts.
“What the fucking hell are you doing here?” she fumes. “You can’t just turn up on my doorstep unannounced. It’s inappropriate. Shouting up at my fucking window? Who the hell do you think you are? Romeo?”
“I wanted to apologise.”
“Oh yeah?” She pushes him into the living room, closing the curtains.
He walks up to her with his hands facing her. “It was weird.”
“Was it?” she asks incredulously. “It actually wasn’t until you made it weird.”
His eyes glide down her body, to her tits covered in black lace and the tiny satin shorts which are slit up the side to the waistband. She watches him physically shake his head and she can see the pictures in his mind as clear as if the were being projected out straight from his brain. He’s so easy to read and she would usually take advantage and tease him, a small move of fabric against her skin, a well timed lip bite, a few small steps towards him making her tits bounce. But not tonight. Tonight she isn’t interested in that.
He hurt her feelings.
He runs his hands over his face. “Why the fuck were you in that club?”
“Probably for the same reason as you, Ivar. To have fun,” she scoffs. “I exist out of this house you know? I have a life that carries on when you aren’t around,” she says sarcastically.
“Who the fuck were you with?” His tone is aggressive, as if she’s personally offended him by socialising with people.
She narrows her eyes at him. She won’t put up with this bullshit. “It’s none of your business, Ivar! Do you even realise how rude you were to me tonight?”
“This shit between us is secret right?! That’s the deal, we fuck, we spend time together but we don’t get involved in each other’s lives. Then you just rock on up to me in a nightclub and expect me to act normal towards you?”
“You got me involved in your life last weekend! You rocked the boat. And tonight, did I come up to you and make a scene? Did I demand you introduce me to all your friends? No I didn’t. All I said was hey, are you having a good night? You could have just said yes thanks, and I would have been gone.”
“I was just shocked. I didn’t think you would come up to me in front of everyone. Fuck, do you know how embarrassing that was?!”
“Embarrassing? Embarrassing?? I embarrassed you by saying hello?!”
“Ugh, you know what I mean.”
“You are too embarrassed to even say hello to me. I’m that mortifying to you you can’t even extend to me the most basic of human courtesy?” She feels her cheeks grow hot but she can’t do anything to stop that.
“Shit, stop putting this all on me! You aren’t embarrassed by me? You’ve made it abundantly fucking clear you don’t want people to know we are together.”
“Together?! We are not together. And no, I haven’t told anyone about us fucking. That is not out of embarrassment. My life is complicated, Ivar! I have children who are old enough to understand what fuck buddies are. I have a cunt ex-husband who wants nothing more than some shit to Lord over me. All my friends are happily married, they wouldn’t understand the age gap.” She stops to take a breath and swallow back the tears that are threatening to burst forth. “I don't tell people because of my circumstances. You don’t tell people because apparently you are embarrassed by me. As much as I hate to admit it, that fucking stung tonight, Ivar. That hurt my feelings.”
“Oh god this is all wrong. Not this.” He gestures between them when he sees her face. “I’ve explained it all wrong! Look, I just don’t want everyone having access to us. It’s special to me and I don’t want it to be scrutinised.”
She throws her head back and laughs at him. “Special to you? Sure it is, Ivar. I don’t even know you! I thought I did, but was what I saw tonight the real you? Because I’m not interested in that at all. I fucking hate rudeness and you were beyond rude tonight. Get out now. I’m exhausted.”
The hurt on his face lasts for three seconds before anger replaces it. “If I walk out here tonight, I won’t be coming back.”
A flutter of fear dances across her chest but she does what she does so well, pushes it away. “Oh well. Life goes on. Everything is replaceable, Ivar.” she replies in the coldest voice she usually reserves for Steven.
The mix of emotions across his face is so hard to watch. She waits for his nasty response, sure it is going to be as hurtful as hers was, but all he does is turn around and leave with an almighty slam of the front door.
She picks up the remote control and throws it into the wall and wipes tears of frustration from her eyes.
------------------------------------
When Steven drops the kids back on Sunday evening, she can see from the minute he gets out of the car that he’s pissed off. She assumes one of the kids has been a pain in the ass but he gives them both warm hugs and kisses goodbyes.
They are safely stowed in their rooms before he addresses her coldly.
“You’ve moved on then?”
She knows what he’s getting at but she is going to play dumb.
“I bumped into Nicole from over the road this morning. She was more than happy to fill me in on what’s been happening in my house every weekend.”
“This isn’t your house, it never was,” she scoffs. “Bye Steven, thanks for dropping the kids back. Next Friday okay still?”
“Okay for what? So you can go out and spread your cunt all around town?”
It wasn’t so long ago that this would have sent her over the edge into a spiral. She knows he’s using the most provocative language he can to get under her skin.
But now is now, and she will never give him any of herself again.
“Don’t be a pig, Steven, that's low even for you. I meant is it okay to pick up the kids,” she replies neutrally.
“If you are bringing men around my children I should meet them. Don’t you think?”
“When that happens, I will make sure you do. Goodbye, Steven.”
“Who the fuck was the guy leaving here in the middle of the night on Friday?!“
“Goodbye.” She starts to close the door on him, but he pushes it open again.
“Do you know I’ve been fucking Nancy for the past three months?!” The shit-eating grin on his face almost tips her into a rage. It’s got nothing to do with the information – she genuinely could not give a shit who he is sleeping with – it’s just that she can’t stand his stupid fucking face and his stupid bullshit attitude.
“Goodbye, Steven,” she says, pushing hard against the door. Once again he stops her.
“Who is he? You better fucking tell me now!”
A clearing of a throat comes from behind Steven and when you both look behind him, you see that Ivar is standing behind him on the driveway, with a look on his face that can only be interpreted as murderous.
Steven falters and he looks back at her, then Ivar. “Excuse me, can you fuck off, I’m having a conversation with my wife.”
“Ex-wife,” she and Ivar say in perfect unison.
Steven continues to stare at Ivar, who stares at her as she tries to keep her mouth set in a straight line at their synchronicity, but the hurt she feels from Friday night helps to do so.
“Goodbye, Steven,” she repeats for a fifth time.
“Is this him?“ He looks Ivar up and down. “The guy you are seeing? Jesus Christ, what are you, mate? Twelve years old?”
They are all interrupted at that moment by one of the children coming downstairs.
“Bud,” Stevens says quickly as the child walks to the front door. “Is this Mum's new boyfriend?”
“Steven!” she shouts angrily.
“Mum doesn’t have a boyfriend. I don’t know who this guy is,” is the reply. “Mum, I’m hungry I’m getting a snack!” the kid calls out, stomping towards the kitchen.
She’s almost shaking with rage, but she keeps her voice level, calm. “Steven. Don’t ever…EVER do that again. You aren’t entitled to any information about my private life anymore. We communicate about the children only and if you ever use them to try and manipulate information about me, I will march you to fucking court about proper visitation and I promise you, you won’t find them as accommodating as I have been. Don’t ever use my children like that again.”
Steven has the good grace to look ashamed and turn away. Ivar and him have a silent pissing contest as her ex-husband walks past him to the car. As he gets into his car and drives away, both her and Ivar stand and watch him leave, before turning their attention back to each other.
“I’ve had enough bullshit for today, Ivar. What are you doing here?” She knows she sounds exhausted, fed up, but she can’t be bothered reining it in anymore.
He walks into her personal space and she almost pulls away but doesn’t. “I’m sorry. I just wanted you to understand how sorry I am,” he pleads with her.
“Got it,” she dismisses him.
“No,” he insists, shaking his head, “you really haven’t got it. I meant what I said about us being special.”
“Ivar,” she holds up her hand, “Firstly, I’m pissed that you are here. My children are home and I made it clear there was to be zero crossover. Secondly, I just don’t have the mental capacity for this. I cannot deal with your feelings as well as mine, as well as theirs. I’m responsible for their emotional health, I’m still helping them through the pain I caused when I threw that wanker out, plus all the other raging hormones flying through them. I have an ex who has the emotional intelligence of a slug. I just can’t deal with another person's feelings right now. That’s what was so amazing about our situation. No strings, no feelings, just sex. Fabulous sex.” She lets out a small, almost hysterical burst of laughter but then goes quiet for a moment before meeting his gaze. “We let it get weird, Ivar. We got too close. I’m going to cut it off now.”
“No, don’t do that.” Ivar doesn’t bother to hide the pleading tone in his voice. “We can go back to how it was, it doesn’t have to be weird. I need you. Nobody else has made me feel as good as you do.”
“Well, I’m not a commodity for your pleasure, Ivar. Goodbye.”
------------------------------------
She closes the door and heads into her kitchen to see her eldest sitting at the island bench, eating a bowl of cereal.
“Good time at your dads, kiddo?”
A shrug gives nothing away.
“I thought I did a good job lying to dad about your boyfriend, eh mum?”
She chokes on thin air. “What? He’s not my boyfriend! Jesus MJ, what makes you think that?”
“Mum.” She is levelled by the teenager's disdainful stare. “I’ve seen your camera roll. You’ve got about fifty pictures of the pair of you. I showed Decks as well. It would be cute if you weren’t my Mum. Also, I’ve seen him walking out of our road loads on Sundays, and the chair in the shower, he has those leg things. Really not that hard to work out.”
“MJ, why did you show Decks?!” She scowls as MJ giggles at the indignant squeak she lets out. “He isn’t my boyfriend. I’m sorry you saw pictures, I’ve tried desperately to keep you away from that. You are too young and I don’t want you to feel weird because of your dad–”
“Mum. I’m 14 in two months. I’m not a baby. Decks didn't care at all. Also, I love Dad but even I know he was a rubbish husband. You should be happy. It’s been a long while since you were. You aren’t as good an actress as you think you are.”
“Baby…” Her eyes mist over.
MJ finishes the cereal and gets up. “God, Mum. Buck up. Don’t cry, it’s cringe.” She gathers her things and walks toward the stairs.
“He’s not my boyfriend.” She shouts after her.
She cleans up the kitchen and retreats to her bedroom, popping her head into the kids' rooms to say goodnight on the way.
She crawls into her bed and curls up on her side and starts to process the weekend. Did she do the wrong thing by talking to him in the club? Did she overreact? She doesn’t think she did, she didn’t make a scene, didn’t flounce out of the club in a piss. She just expected a modicum of respect from the man she's been sleeping with for months, and if he thinks that’s unreasonable then that’s on him.
She feels a sting of annoyance when she thinks about him turning up on her door on a Sunday evening, knowing that that time of the week is totally out of bounds to him. She huffs out a laugh of derision remembering his words. “Special to him.” Fucking liar.
Her phone beeps and his name is on her screen.
When I said that no one makes me feel as good as you I didn’t mean the sex. It’s more than that. So much more.
She doesn’t reply. She just plugs her phone in to charge and turns her back to sleep.

What I’m reading these days #5
Previously:
* What I’m reading these days #01 * What I’m reading these days #02 * What I’m reading these days #03 * What I’m reading these days #04
Hey everyone, I hope you're doing all right! It's been a long while since I wrote one of these posts, almost 5 years actually... Yeah, recently I've been more focused on sharing scans than texts like these or artbook reviews, sorry!
Anway, these days I'm reading four cool books at once so I figured I could make you (re)discover something, so let's go!
Tumblr media
What a surprise, yes, I'm reading Dragon Ball again, last time was 6 years ago so I thought I could revisit this cool universe that always brings me back to my childhood. In France we have a "Perfect Edition" which has a bigger format than usual mangas, a new translation and all the original colour pages so it's a great pleasure to read! I'm always in awe when looking at Toriyama's watercolours, they were absolutely beautiful.
I'm not going to dive much further into Dragon Ball because I've already talked about it a lot, maybe take a look at this old article.
///
Now something completely different, if you are an avid TV show enthusiast, you might have watched the sci-fi show The Expanse. I discovered it after a few seasons had already aired and really enjoyed it (except maybe the last two seasons which had some flaws in my opinion). I quickly learned that before being on TV it was a very good series of books by a couple of authors writing under a single name: James S.A. Corey. So naturally I started buying and reading these books, loved them and realised that the adaptation was quite good. It took some years but I eventually finished reading the nine books and at that moment, just when I thought I was out of this amazing universe, I saw that there was a collection of The Expanse short stories published under the title Memory's Legion.
Tumblr media
So that's what I'm reading right now and just like the rest of the series, it's very cool and definitely fills some interesting holes in the Expanse's lore (plus I always enjoy good sci-fi short stories)! You will learn a little bit more about the guy who came up with the Epstein drive that made space travel a lot easier in the story, the backstory of a cruel but intriguing character (Cortazar), the life of a young Amos (even before he was called Amos), etc. It's a very good read if, like me, you've finished the main series and still want more!
///
Let's keep our heads towards the sky for this next book: Moonfire by Norman Mailer. I stumbled upon it in a bookstore in Lyon, France and the cover immediately caught my eye. It's a small but thick book which contains as much text as photos from NASA's Apollo 11 mission (the first time humans beings walked on the Moon back in 1969). Being an astronomy and space exploration fan I just had to buy it and I'm glad I did!
Tumblr media
Actually I thought it would be a historico-scientific recollection of this incredible event of the XXth century but that's because I didn't know Norman Mailer! I will let you read his Wikipedia page but he wasn't "just" a writer, he also was a journalist, a poet, an essayist and so on. So instead of simply telling us what happened in that important period of human history, he includes himself in the story as a character and shares his thoughts about the situations, the people, the technology, etc. It makes for a surprising yet very interesting read as he takes this unique opportunity to analyze, criticize even our modern society and more specifically the USA's society of the time.
I'm about halfway through the book and I really enjoy Mailer's way of telling the story but also the incredible photos of the event, most of them taken during the mission itself by astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins, I cannot stop looking at these shots and wonder what their experience was like. They freakin' walked on another celestial body (actually only two of them did while Collins was busy being the loneliest person in the history of Human life, flying above the far side of the Moon)!
///
A couple of my friends work at a local comic book shop and thanks to them I often discover very cool comics, mangas and bandes dessinées (what we call european comics in France). Also it's worth mentioning that the french publisher Urban Comics (they publish a lot of american comics here) is trying to make a selection of their books more affordable and compact for people who don't have much money or space in their home that they can dedicate to comic books. And so in this effort they have started a collection called "Urban Nomad" in which all prices are below 10€ (approx. 10 USD). The first one I picked is Watchmen.
Tumblr media
I have watched the movie adaptation when it came out... 14 years ago (ouch!) and really liked it but kind of forgot about it, which is a good thing because now I can re-discover the story in its original format: on paper!
And what a story! Since the first pages I was sucked in by the strength of writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons and colorist John Higgins. The story is so good and feels so contemporary that I have to keep reminding myself that this was made in 1986-87! If you don't know anything about Watchmen I won't spoil it for you but the story takes place in a version of our world where masked vigilantes are already has-been, one of the reasons being the accidental transformation of a man into a God-like version of himself. Because of this event, the course of history is different from the one we know and live in, and in this context one of the few remaining masked vigilantes (pictured on the cover) is investigating a series of murders among his former colleagues. This is all extremely well integrated into the politico-historic context of the time (though once again it's somewhat different from our reality) and it's easy to recognize the quality of Moore and Gibbons' work!
///
Well, that's it for now, I hope you've discovered something, if so let me know! And I'll try not to wait five more years to write a "What I'm reading these days" again. See ya!

“Oh, come on, Rick! That is not what happened!”
“What are you talking about? That is exactly what happened!”
“I did not push you into that lake!”
Rick stared, slack jawed as he held the bar door open for you. “Are you fuckin’ kidding me? How are we still having this argument after two years? You walked up beside me, said ‘You look really hot today’ and then pushed me in the lake. In the middle of December!”
“Does that really sound like something I would do?”
“Yes, and it’s something you did do!”
“How I remember it was I walked up to you, said ‘You look really hot today’ and then you got really flustered because you thought I was flirting with you, and you fell in the lake.”
Rick shook his head. “No, ma’am. First of all, you were flirting with me, and second, if that’s true and I just fell, then how did your hand end up on my back?”
“I was just trying to grab you before you fell in. And I was not flirting. I still thought you were kind of an asshole back then.”
“Nice try, darlin’, but I’m not buying.”
You gave him a cheeky grin. “You better be. I left my wallet at home.” You get the bartender’s attention. “Two beers, Kevin. Ah, what are we kidding? Make it four.” Rick shook his head as you turned back to him. “What?”
“Can we at least pretend we’re gonna behave tonight?”
“When was the last time we came here without ordering at least four beers apiece? Just ordering two to start with is behaving.”
Suddenly, Rick noticed someone approaching you from behind. You saw his confused expression and started to turn around but froze as the stranger said, “Hey there, doll. Long time no see.”
Rick watched as the playful expression on your face slid into one of shock and disbelief. Slowly, you turned to face the newcomer, a sad smile flickering on your lips as you whispered, “How’s it going, Sarge.” Then you threw your arms around the man’s neck.
Sarge. There was only one person you ever referred to by that name. Your ex-boyfriend. The one you had been with just before you met Rick. Sergeant James “Bucky” Barnes.
You pulled back from your hug. “I can’t believe you’re here! It’s so good to see you! And wow! You cut your hair! I’ve never seen it this short.”
Rick saw the other man blush slightly as he ran his hand through his hair. “Yeah, I…I thought a change might do me good.”
“No, it looks great. God, what has it been? Like three years?”
“Two and a half, yeah. You look amazing as always.”
You blushed slightly. “You’re just saying that…. But thank you.” Just then, you seemed to remember Rick. You quickly grabbed his hand as you said, “Oh, I’m sorry. Rick, this is Bucky Barnes. You know, I’ve told you about him. Bucky, this is Colonel Rick Flag…..my boyfriend.”
Rick stuck out his hand. “Nice to meet you. Y/N’s told me a lot about you.”
“Only good things I hope.” Bucky grabbed Rick’s hand almost too firmly and Rick returned the pressure.
“Yep, she never had a single bad thing to say about you.” The two men stared each other down for a moment, then released their hold on one another.
You glanced anxiously between the two men, their exchange not going unnoticed. But you didn’t comment on it as you turned back to Bucky. “So, what are you doing here? You’re not…here for me….are you?”
Bucky quickly rushed to clarify, “No, no. I had no idea you were even in Louisiana. Sam needed a part for his boat, so I offered to drive over and pick it up. It turns out the guy won’t be finished with it for a few more hours, so I saw this bar across the street and decided to get a drink. I could barely believe my eyes when I walked in and saw you standing there.”
“Rick and I work with a special task force based out of Belle Reve Penitentiary a few miles down the road. We come here all the time between missions.”
Kevin set your four beers down on the bar top in front of you. Rick watched as Bucky’s eyes drifted to the beers then back to the two of you then back to the four beers. “Oh, I’m sorry, if you guys are meeting some people, I won’t bother you.”
You blushed deeper but tried to shrug it off. “Ah, no. Those are just for us. You know…”
Bucky smirked softly. “Yeah, I remember.” He turned to address Rick for this first time. “This one always tried to drink me under the table even though she knew I can’t really get drunk.”
“Hey! I won that one night!”
“Doll, I had lost like three pints of blood, and you insisted we raided the liquor cabinet while we waited for our extraction. I wasn’t drunk, I was going into shock.”
“Tomayto, Tomahto. You still passed out before me, so it counts as a victory!” You suddenly buried your face in your hands. “Oh God. That really makes it sound like I have a drinking problem, doesn’t it?”
“A little.” Bucky and Rick said at the same time. They glanced at each other, then quickly shifted their focus back to you.
Once again, you ignored the tension between the two men. “Buck, why don’t you join us? I’d love to catch up.” You looked at Rick. “You don’t mind, do you?”
Of course he didn’t want to spend his night off with you and your ex, but Rick knew better than to voice his objection. “Course not, darlin’. The more the merrier.” He slid his arm around your shoulder as he started steering the two of you to your usual booth. “Besides, it’ll be nice to hear more stories about you from before we met.”
You shrugged him off, glaring at his possessive move. “Great. So, a table for three tonight. Rick, can you grab the drinks?” You took Bucky’s hand and led him to a booth on the opposite side of the room from where Rick had been heading. He watched as the two of you slid in across from each other and began happily chatting.
Normally, Rick wasn’t really that jealous of a boyfriend. He knew you were out of his league, but you never made him feel that way. Anytime the two of you went out, all eyes were always on you, yet yours never wandered from Rick.
But with this guy, it was painfully clear that both of you still had feelings for each other. Rick felt a pang in his chest as he watched you grab Bucky’s gloved hand with yours, that sweet little half smile he had always thought was just reserved for him spread across your face.
You had told Rick all about your relationship with Sergeant Barnes. How the two of you had meet when he was still the Winter Soldier and you had been working with the Avengers, how you stumbled across him a year after he escaped and the two of you had fallen in love, how he was framed for a crime he didn’t commit and was forced to go on the run and how you had gone with him, how you had helped him and the other Avengers stop some crazy purple alien from disintegrating half of life in the universe, and how after four years of dating, you had just ended things. That was the one part you had remained vague on. Why.
Rick hadn’t been lying earlier when he said you never had a single bad thing to say about Bucky. You never mentioned any arguments, any issues with your physical connection, any cheating, nothing. And the one time Rick had tried to push you for details, you had shrugged him off. All you had said was it didn’t work out.
But now, seeing the two of you together, Rick couldn’t help but feel nervous. What if you remembered how much you cared for Bucky and decided to leave him? What if seeing Bucky reminded you why you broke up with him and you realized you had the same issues in your current relationship? Rick hated this entire situation but there was little he could do but grab the beers and join the pair of you at the table.
You smiled slightly at him as he handed you your drink, but then immediately turned back to your ex. “So, Bucky, you mentioned you’re here picking up a part for Sam’s boat?”
“Yeah, I’ve been helping him fix it up while he’s visiting his sister. It’s an old fishing boat that’s been in their family for years so parts are hard to find. This was the closest place that had what he needs.”
“Where do they live?”
“Over in Delacroix.”
Your eyes widened. “Are you kidding me? That’s only like two hours from here! If I would have known he was so close, I would have gone by and seen him a long time ago.” You turned to Rick. “You know Sam Wilson, don’t you? Didn't he replace you when you left Project Kovacs?”
Rick shook his head. “Yeah, but I never met him. I was gone before he ever showed up.”
“Oh, well, you would really like him.” You turned your focus back to the man across from you. “But if I recall correctly, Bucky, you couldn’t stand him. What changed?”
“…..After you…left, Sam and Steve started coming around more often and he kind of grew on me after a while. He still gets on my nerves almost constantly, but he’s a good guy.”
“So then wh-” your cell phone began to ring. Glancing at it, you groaned. “Sorry guys, it’s work. I’ll be right back.” You squeezed over Rick’s lap and hurried to the far corner of the bar.
Rick picked awkwardly at the label of his beer. He thought sitting with you and Bucky had been bad, but it was nothing compared to the awkwardness of the two men being left alone. Bucky drummed his fingers lightly on the table, looking uncertainly around the room. Finally, he sighed, “Well, I guess this is your chance.”
“My what?” Rick asked.
“Your chance. To ask me anything you want to know while she’s not around. I won’t hold anything back or hide anything so if there’s something you want to know, ask.”
“Why did you guys break up?” The words were out of Rick’s mouth almost before Bucky had finished speaking.
Bucky nodded, almost as if this was the question he had expected Rick to ask. “She never mentioned it?”
“No, all she ever said was things just didn’t work out between you two. But I can tell she still cares deeply for you…. and it seems like you may still love her too.”
“I do.” Rick was taken aback at his blunt honesty, but Bucky continued. “l never wanted to break up and if it were up to me, we would still be together. But…. I don’t even really understand what happened. One day everything seemed fine and the next she’s telling me she wants to take a break, that she needed time to think. All she said was that she loved me but something felt like it was missing. She couldn’t explain what, just that deep down she knew she needed something that our relationship wasn’t giving her. So, we broke up. And I haven’t seen her since.”
Rick could feel a cold knot forming in the pit of his stomach. If you could just walk away from the man you loved for four years without a second glance, what did that mean for your relationship with him? “So, you just let her go? You didn’t try to fight for her, get her to stay? Why?”
“Because she asked me not to. And I could never say no to that woman. If that’s what she wanted, who was I to deny her that.” Bucky took a long drink from one of the beers. “In the end, I guess I had found my soulmate, but she hadn’t found hers. And that’s what she went looking for.”
“How were you okay with that? If you loved her – still love her – as much as you say, how did you just give up?”
Bucky sighed. “Colonel, I’m not sure how much you know about me, but I was born in 1917 and, by all accounts, I should have died in 1945. So, the fact that I got to meet her at all, that I got to call her mine for four years, four years I was never supposed to have, I see that as a gift. That’s why I don’t look at it as giving up. It’s being grateful for the time I got. And I am grateful, so incredibly grateful, for having her in my life. She was there for me in my darkest moments, and she helped me claw my way back to the light. She saved me, in every way that a person can be saved.”
Rick squinted at the hardened soldier sitting across from him. “…..Did you- did you just quote Titanic?”
Bucky stared back at him, unfazed. “Yeah, and did you just recognize the fact I quoted Titanic?”
“Touché.”
“She made us watch it all the time. It is- was her favorite movie.”
“It still is. Bawls like a baby every time.”
Bucky furrowed his brow. “Really? Huh…. she never ever teared up when we watched it. I guess people change over time.” He hesitated for a second before he said, “Do you mind if I ask you a question?”
Rick tensed slightly but said, “Shoot.”
“Do you love her?”
“Of course.”
Bucky shook his head. “No, I don’t mean the casual way people say ‘I love you’ without really thinking about what those words mean. I want to know, do you love her in the way that you would do anything, risk anything, give up anything just to make her smile. Do you love her in the way that she is the last thing you think of as you drift off to sleep and she’s the first thought you have when you wake up? Do you love her in the way that you want her happiness over your own, even if that means she’s not with you? Do you love her in that way?”
Rick understood what Bucky was really asking and he felt a twinge of sadness for the man sitting across from him. But he leaned forward, looked him dead in the eye and said, “Yes. I love her in all of those ways and so many more.”
The two men stared unblinking at each other for a long time. Finally, just as Rick was about to look away, Bucky grinned and sat back with an exaggerated blink. “You know what? I believe you do. Just, please, keep an eye on our girl. She has a bad habit of putting herself into dangerous situations to protect others.”
If anyone else had referred to you as “our girl”, Rick would have punched them in the face. But somehow in the last few minutes, he felt like he had come to some weird understanding with your ex. As much as Bucky still loved you and wanted you back, he knew that wasn’t what you wanted. And he, like Rick, loved you enough to let you have the life you wanted, no matter what that meant. It also gave Rick some comfort to know that if anything ever happened to him, there was someone else out there who would be there to take care of you.
So instead of correcting Bucky’s word choice, Rick just smiled and nodded. “I will do my best.” He glanced over to where you had been standing. Watching as you hung up the phone and headed back to the table, he used this last opportunity to say, “Well, Sergeant Barnes, I feel like under different circumstances, we could have been great friends.”
Bucky gave Rick a small smile. “Colonel Flag, I was just thinking the same thing.” He climbed out of the booth just as you reached the table. “Hey, I think I’m going to head back to the shop and see if that part’s ready. Besides, I’ve taken up enough of your guys’ night.”
Your face fell. “What? Are you sure? I feel like I barely got to talk to you. I was on the stupid phone the whole time.”
“Yeah, I better get going before they close.”
“Okay. But tell Sam I’m going to drop by soon now that I know he’s so close.”
Bucky nodded. “Will do…. It was really great to see you again, doll.”
You wrapped your arms around his neck. “It was great to see you too, Sarge. I’ve really missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too.” From this angle, Rick could see the pinched, strained look on Bucky’s face and he quickly averted his eyes. But when the two of you separated, Bucky turned to Rick. “It was great meeting you. It’s nice to know she’s found such a swell guy.” He extended his hand.
Rick took it with none of the posturing or challenging air from before. “It was great to finally meet the man she’s told me so much about. I understand why she thinks so highly of you.” The two men eyed each other one more time, and with slight smiles on each of their faces, they released the handshake. Bucky nodded at you one final time and walked out of the bar.
Rick watched your eyes trail after him, a melancholy expression on your face. “You should go talk to him.”
Blinking in confusion, you turned to your boyfriend. “Wh-what? Why?”
“I know you’ve never really wanted to talk to me about why you guys broke up, but he deserves to know. Whatever you were feeling, whatever your reasoning, you should go explain because he is still clueless about it.”
“Really? He said that?”
Rick nodded. “I think it would help him move on. So, go catch him while you can. I’ll pay the tab and meet you by the truck.”
You stood on your toes and kissed Rick’s cheek. “Okay, thank you, babe. I won’t be long.” And with that, you rushed out the door.
Tumblr media
Twenty minutes later, you and Rick were back in the truck on your way to your apartment. Rick had been able to see you and Bucky talking as he waited, leaning against the truck. He couldn’t hear what either of you were saying but it seemed pretty emotional on both sides. Finally, the two of you had embraced for what seemed like an eternity, then you hurried back to the truck, wiping tears from your eyes. You hadn’t said a word as you climbed into the passenger’s seat or for the entire ride home.
As soon as Rick pulled into the parking lot, you flung yourself out of the truck and rushed into the building. With a sigh, Rick slowly followed you. By the time he got into the apartment, you already had the shower running. Pressing his ear gently against the door to the bathroom, Rick could just barely make out your sobs over the sound of the water. He let out a deep breath as he let his voice rumble through the door, “Darlin’, I’m here if you want to talk. Or if you just want me to silently hold you, I’m here for that too. Or if you’d prefer to be on your own, I’ll be here when you want some company again. Just let me know what you need.” With that, Rick returned to the living room, sat down on the couch, and waited.
Forty-eight minutes later, you emerged from the bathroom. Shuffling into the living room, you looked like a mess. Your damp hair hung limply as it dripped water onto Rick’s old t-shirt you had commandeered as a nightshirt and your eyes were red and puffy. Yet Rick still thought you were one of the most beautiful sights he had ever seen. He opened his arms and you rushed into them, curling up in his lap and nuzzling your face into his neck. Rick just held you, rubbing your back as you cried.
Finally, after you calmed down a little, he heard you mutter, “I didn’t know I was still hurting him like that. I figured by now, he would have just moved on, found somebody else. Or at least tried. I thought a clean break would be easier. I thought he understood why I did it. I feel like such a terrible person.”
“No, darlin’. You just did what you thought was best. No one can blame you for that, even Bucky. He knew you did what you had to do, he just needed some….. clarification.”
“Two and a half years, Rick. I let him suffer like this for two and a half years. The man who did nothing but love me and care for me. I dropped him like a sack of potatoes with no real explanation or justification. I just left. How could I do that to someone I loved? Who I still-” You glanced sideways at Rick, clearly hoping he didn’t catch what you were about to say.
Rick sighed. “It’s okay. It was pretty obvious just from watching the two of you, you both still have feelings for each other. I’m not gonna say it didn’t hurt, but I understand. And he did seem like a great guy.”
“He is, but Rick, it’s not like that. I…” You trailed off once again.
“I already told you, you don’t have to tell me anything about what happened that you don’t feel comfortable sharing.”
“It’s not that. I just… I have a hard time explaining what happened because honestly, I’m still not 100% sure what happened. My relationship with Bucky was amazing and I don’t regret a second of it. He was so loving, and kind, and respectful. And our physical relationship was insane! He was surprisingly adventurous for someone who grew up in the 1930’s and those metal fingers-” Rick shifted uncomfortably. “Hey, you wanted to know. But, moving on….
“Everything was great until one day, I realized that no matter how happy I was, something was missing. I didn’t know what it was, I just knew that as much as I loved him, there was something more that I needed. So, I left. And for eight months, I tried to find that missing piece, but nothing felt right. I told myself I would give it just a little more time and then I would run back to Bucky and beg him to forgive me, to take me back.” Your hand crept up until it rested on Rick’s cheek. “But that’s when I met you. And from the first time we talked, the first time we laughed, I knew I had found what I was looking for. I still don’t know what it is, but with you, I never felt that anything was missing.”
Rick smiled, thinking about what Bucky had said earlier. “You found your soulmate.”
You beamed broadly back at him. “Maybe. Maybe that’s what it was. But after I pushed you into that lake and you asked me out, I never once considered going back to Bucky again.”
Rick jumped to his feet as he yelled in triumph, knocking you onto the couch and catching you off guard. “You admit it! After all this time, I finally got you to admit it!”
“Wh-what?”
“You just said you pushed me into the lake. After almost 2 years, I got you to admit that you did in fact push me.” Rick smirked smugly at you.
You stared up at him, incredulously. “Really? I’m trying to bare my soul and that’s what you take away from this? Okay, fine. Yes, I pushed you. I liked you so I tried flirting with you. Then, like a five-year-old, I got nervous about how you would react, so I pushed you into the lake. Are you happy?”
“Very. Turns out, that’s what I was missing from this relationship.” Rick leaned in and kissed you softly, ignoring the glare you were shooting in his direction. “But all kiddin’ aside, I’m sorry if you thought I wasn’t taking what you were saying seriously. I feel the same way, darlin’. From the moment we met, it just seemed right. You’re it for me. From the bottom of my soul, as long as I have you, I don’t need anything else.”
“Really?”
“Really.” He pulled you close against his chest once again, but this time there were no tears. Instead, there was just the silent understanding that you had each found the one person you had been looking for and they were the only one who you wanted for the rest of your lives.
Finally, you pulled away. “Thank you for tonight. I know that couldn’t have been easy for you, but you handled it better than I think I could have.”
“Anything for you, darlin’. Besides, once we got over the initial awkwardness, I actually kind of liked him.”
“Really? Bucky’s great once you get to know him, but he can be a bit of an acquired taste. I used to tease him he’s kind of like a cat. Doesn’t like new people, but fiercely loyal once you gain his trust.”
“Well, I guess I gained his trust.”
“I guess I’m not surprised. You have a very trustworthy face. And it’s pretty damn handsome too.” You trailed your hand down his cheek again, before lightly tapping it. “Hey, it’s getting late, and we have a big week ahead of us. We should probably head to bed.” Rick pushed you to your feet, then you helped pull him off the couch.
As the two of you headed to the bedroom, Rick remembered something. “Oh, you never told me, what did Waller want when she called?”
“Not much, she’s just changing up our assignments for the next mission. She’s sending you to Corto Maltese with Harley, Boomer, and the rest of the team while she wants me to stay back and prep for a different assignment. Not sure why, but you know how she gets.”
Rick snorted. “Yeah. But, hey, did you see that shirt she was wearing today? I told her it looked like a gang of clowns just shit all over it.”
Your eyes bulged wildly. “There is no way you said that to her face!”
“Sure did. Just ask Economos. He thought it was hilarious. Waller….. not so much.”
“I bet she didn’t. Well, just don’t come crying to me when she plots her revenge because you know she will….. But it was a hideous shirt though.”
Rick chuckled as he saw you climb into bed and wrapped yourself up tightly in all of the sheets. Watching you snuggle down tightly, shooting him a sheepish grin, he felt as though he had never loved you more. In fact, it took all of his willpower not to march over to his closet, pull out the box he had hidden there, and drop down on one knee right here and now. But you deserved something so much more special than a late-night bedroom proposal. So, he held himself back. A few more days, darlin’. Just as soon as I get back from Corto Maltese, I’ll give you a surprise you’ll never forget. And then it’ll be just you and me….for the rest of our lives.

The cut of the stolen time capsule videos starts with a close up on Ida Clarke, the blonde wagging her finger before speaking.
@idaclarke:  “This place ain’t your friend.”
It cuts to black for a split second, before cutting to the next video.
@sassa-fiske: “People aren’t who they say they are. They aren’t who they pretend to be. Trust me. Nothing and no one is what they seem.”
And again, and again, as it cycles through what seems like everyone’s submitted videos.
@anyaexe: “You’re here for four years, and from that point onwards most of these people won’t spare you a single thought.”
@charfletchh: “Fuck it.” You see her consider it briefly before lifting up her top and flashing her chest.
@leakywright: “Fuck bitches, get money.”
@snxwflxwers: “Do cocaine. Cheat on your finals. Sleep with your best friend's partner. Try your best not to get stabbed in the back, but I'm sure you will anyway. None of this actually matters, all your parents will pay so nothing ever ruins your damn lives."
@defavorise: “Don’t disappear without a trace and leave a bunch of cryptic notes for your peers to find. It’s dramatic and fucking weird and it’s already been done.”
@sebmorrison: “My best piece of advice… don’t waste a second of it, because you never know when it’s gonna end.”
@ironlvngs: “This school is boring as fuck. So boring, that a missing girl from campus must have been the most interesting thing to happen to it since I started. And it's no wonder she had to slip and run away from here the way that she did.”
@aletheapierce: “Everyone you encounter has so much more going on under the surface. Be careful, be kind, and maybe spend some time exploring what’s there. Then maybe they won’t surprise you in ugly ways.”
@jacqui-velazquez: “Jesse made me feel like I mattered. And then it turned out it was all just…fake. A game for him. A literal bet. And once he won, he just ghosted. Even though I was…”
@jessehart: “I was fucking this girl who had a boyfriend for pretty much all of my Sophomore year. And I’m not sorry. It was fun, we had fun together. The secrecy and the sneaking around is fun. And you know what? I’ll do it again next year.”
@aceofportsmouth: “I’m just another brat.”
@milonavarroo: “If you manage to look around you and every single person has their back turned, you should look inward and you will probably find the reason why."
@court-mills: “I feel like I’ve gotten so addicted to the feeling of people actually liking me.”
@cinnamonfm: “I’m overworked and exhausted. I’m constantly trying to live up to some invisible standard that I’m not quite sure I meet.”
@rhia-falla: “I used to think I existed for a boy. To love him and heal him, to give him every part of me. But people aren’t toys to be fixed. It doesn’t work like that. All I did was break myself trying to be needed by him.”
@walshparker: “How often do you run into your ex—a serious ex—after they’d hooked up with someone else, find out you were completely wrong about a person, bite back… intense guilt in front of a friend, and finally feel like you’re going somewhere with someone who really excites you? All in one night?”
@ollieinoue: “One day you can be getting stoned in your room after a party and some scrawny little shit head from South Dakota will walk in and suddenly maybe you don't want to die as much as you used to…But I guess there is a lot of shit I still haven't told him. Like, I'm just really … Forget it.”
@dantebsinferno: “I like fucking guys. Change that, I love it. I don’t care if they are in me or I’m in them, it’s the best shit.”
@rileyvander4rd: “You made a big mistake and if you're smart, you'll fix it. If not, I guess I'll see you fifty years from now.... when I look almost as hot as I do now and you're regretting every life decision you ever made since the day you chose to view me as a commodity.”
@mari-zuko: “I thought I loved her.”
@pi-mimi-for-hire: “Life sucks. You can’t escape it.”
@nataliavega: “Since these look way better now than they will then…” Nat’s fingers bunched around the hem of her shirt before she lifted it and her bra up, flashing her bare chest at the camera.
@montyrichler: “Ogden’s dogshit. Sorry you didn’t make the cut for Yale."
The video cut to black again, this time staying black for longer, a few seconds ticked by, letting everything the viewer had just seen sink in, before a familiar blonde’s face appeared on screen.
“You see,” Greer Morrison started, eyes distant even with the easy-going smile on her face. “People think the way to get close to me is to let me in on their secrets. But they never once tried to figure out mine.”
Tumblr media
“And god, I have so many,” the golden girl said, letting out a low laugh, the sound contagious, just as it always had been when she was actually around. “Like...for example, things are over between my boyfriend. Maybe he doesn’t realize it yet, but if he hasn’t figured it out by the end of the summer….”
And with that, the video cut, this time turning to black for good, leaving everyone wondering - what else had Greer shared on that tape?

Little Bit Distracted | Robin Buckley x Reader
Summary: Your crush suggesting everyone to strip down after being drenched in bat venom is definitely not how you thought your day would go.
Word Count: 0.8k
A/N: so this is my first fanfic I’ve written in hmmm maybe 2 years? I’m still getting used to it again so I’m sure I’ll get better with time. I used to write fanfics every single day and that’s gonna be a goal I pick back up! If you know me you know Robin is my biggest crush so writing a Robin fanfic again was amazing! I hope you enjoy! :)
Warnings: Nudity
Tumblr media
The Upside Down.
Filled with floating orbs, killer bats, and apparently four people who have zero clue what they’re doing.
You are way too busy stressing over your millionth near death experience with the bats to even remember your intense, head over heels, if you could you would be clinging to her every part of her body, crush on Robin. But she’s certainly about to bring that thought back to the forefront of your brain soon enough.
Steve and Eddie are doing this thing that looks like arguing, with it being an obvious cover for them to flirt and dance around that sexual tension everyone could see a mile away.
“Harrington, I’m just saying, the amount of moose and hairspray and shit you probably have in your hair, I honestly expected it to stay in place much, much longer!”
Eddie reaches to mess with his hair even more but Steve ducks, shooing his hand away.
“Oh I’m sorry I let down your expectations as I was BATTLING DEADLY BATS!” Steve says as he turns to face Eddie.
“Okay guys, not to break up the fun, but we have god knows what on us- probably venom, and it could be seriously poisonous. We need to get out of these clothes before our body consumes whatever bat shit liquid this is,” Robin interrupts.
Suddenly you were brought back down to earth- well not earth, since you’re technically in the upside down, which is probably not classified as earth, but whatever.
You pause as Robin takes her backpack off her shoulders and hands out spare clothing.
“Damn Robin, you were really prepared,” Steve says, taking the clothes from her.
“Gotta be ready for anything,” she responds.
You stand completely still, unable to move as Robin hands you your clothes. Somehow your hands are able to grab them though, despite your body feeling like it had already shut down.
Everybody rushes, Steve and Eddie both lifting shirts over their heads in quick time, obviously understanding the dangers of the situation, but your brain is a little preoccupied to fully understand those dangers.
Robin pulls her shirt off, quick but delicate, and tosses it to the side.
You swear your jaw is laying on the floor as you watch the fabric leave her body, revealing a small red bra, cris crossed in the back. Her boobs bounce as she shimmies her pants down, tossing them to the side as well. You can’t believe it. Robin Buckley, the hottest girl in Hawkins, is standing in front of you in nothing but a bra and panties.
Robin lets out a breath, lifting her hair off the back of her neck with her fingers, some hair still sticking to her damp skin. She picks up the spare clothing, and begins to put it on when you soon realize you have been starring for way too long. As much as you would love to stare at her gorgeous figure or imagine your hands caressing her soft skin, you unfortunately have more important things to do. And yes, they are somehow more important than gawking over Robin Buckley half naked in front of your eyes.
You notice Steve looking at you as you snap out of your trance, a knowing smirk on his face that he shakes off into a laugh. He knows just how massive of a crush you have on Robin, and he also knows how terrified you are to ever tell her.
You shoot him a look before shaking off your feelings and stripping down.
“You’re in love with her, aren’t you?” Eddie asks as you all walk through the upside down.
He looks at Robin who is talking with Steve up ahead.
You blush, hanging your head down.
“Is it that obvious?”
Eddie laughs. A comforting, reassuring laugh.
“You sorta haven’t taken your eyes off of her since we began walking.”
You squint your eyes shut with the words.
So you really weren’t that great at hiding it, huh?
“Well,” you say “what about you and Steve?”
You get a smirk out of Eddie as he cocks his neck down to the side. He laughs before lifting his head to speak.
“Well…”
“You’re seriously in love with this girl, aren’t you?” Steve asks Robin as they walk ahead of you and Eddie.
She scoffs while rolling her eyes.
Something you failed to notice moments ago was Robin stealing glances as you slipped out of your clothes.
When your shirt hit the ground her eyes quickly looked. She was in awe. Her cheeks grew warm and she looked away with a small smile before Steve gave her that same look he gave you, with an added eye roll.
“Yes I’m in love with her, how could I not be?! But it’s not like she even likes me.”
Steve stops in his tracks, his brows furrowing as he sighs.
“Wow, you’re both oblivious. It’s like you were made for each other!”

I haven’t written here in God knows how long. Nothing much has changed. Still at the same job. I make a little more. I pay for everything. Hes still a stay at home dad and work for him is slow. On his line of work he doesn’t make what he should and the job market is fucking trash. I’ve seen it. He’s still looking for work. I realized when I wrote that post back in March of last year he wasn’t cheating then (dirty texting) it started in February.
His first wife who he was in contact with sent him dirty pictures. I looked at the date and it was when I was asleep at four am. I woke up two and a half hours later and got ready for work. I know it was a Saturday. It doesn’t punch me in the gut like it did when I first found out, but it’s still sad that he has a women next to him (me), a brand new baba, and yet he’s dirty texting his first wife while swapping dick pics.
Maybe it was my temper, or because we had fucked? Who knows, it was 18 months ago and I don’t remember. I don’t know why I’m writing this now.
Our kid is two, and she is growing. That’s beside the point. The point is, why do guys cheat even if they have a woman next to them? Sure it’s just dirty pictures and they aren’t fucking, but they might as well be.
He’s sleeping currently. I made him dinner and it’s on his desk cold. I’m thankful for how he helps and I do love him. I just hope I don’t end up being a single mom doing it on my own.
It’s almost six pm and the baby is watching paw patrol. She really likes it. She hasn’t napped at all today and probably won’t. Hopefully I can go to bed in the next four hours so I can get ready for work tomorrow. He may help his brother paint tomorrow. If he does, I have to figure out how I can work a full eight hours with a two year old. I won’t bring this up to him. I’m just like wow he was doing this while I was working.
He was probably drinking vodka at the time which mind you I paid for. I’ve been paying for everything for the last two years. Since he became a stay at home dad in November of 2020. I can do it on my own if I wanted to.
I worked out earlier because he said he was going to. I know I’m a fucking fat loser with no prospects and that’s probably why he cheated because I mumble under my breath and I’m difficult to live with. I don’t speak to anybody except him and two girlfriends who pretty much don’t speak to me unless they text first.
I’ve given up everything to move here and it’s much better than Vegas but is this what I get? I don’t mean to play the victim and there is his side… I’m working at a job I’m starting to hate, never leaving the house unless it’s for groceries and I basically live at home.
I’m happy I have a kid but not happy I got cheated on even if he doesn’t think so. I’ll probably delete this but when he drinks vodka I’m on edge. Will he pass out? Whose watching the kid? It’s this way when I’m working. It’s very fucking stressful and it’s been this way since he stopped working due to his anxiety. He stopped drinking vodka and started on beer but he said to grab wine for me and a bottle for him. It also helps to clean the heads of his vaping which I use too and I KNEW if I got it he’d drink it. I got it Tuesday and the bottle is almost gone.
It doesn’t matter. I’m in a rut and fucking sad. I don’t talk to anybody about it because I trust nobody. I keep to myself. I post pictures of my kid doing cute shit on SM. Other than that I don’t exist. I’ve been here two years and still haven’t had a vacation. I can’t afford it. With the PTO I do have it’s used for being sick. I currently have 14 hours and we can use unpaid work points which I have but I can’t afford that.
Sorry to ramble. I’m just really sad about this shitshow I’ve created and choose to stay on. Not a shitshow I don’t understand why he dirty texted her and I don’t want to have that conversation with him because I don’t have the emotional energy or time to argue. It’ll come down to why are you going through my phone? I wanted photos of my kid that he took, and yet I stumble across p u s s y pictures that are still backed up on your google photos?
Yet, I’m the c u n t if I bring it up. I know I’m playing the victim I’m just like why would you do this when your second wife fucked other dudes and you found out just like I found out. Sure you have kids with her but I’m in the same boat. Just like you I got cheated on except you didn’t fuck the bitch who you sent dick pics to. What’s ironic is the time stamp when I found out her sent his dick pics to her. It was right before I got on my last break.
How is that okay? How are you okay sending dick pics and have your gf who has your kid walk out of her work area and will ask how are you? Do you need anything?
I’m such a fun c k i n g cuck 😒
To be continued

“stop flirting with him/her.”
Katrina heard the truck pull up so she had to quickly check herself in the mirror one last time. As if she hasn’t done that seven times since she got the confirmation that her grocery delivery is on its way. She didn’t really need the laundry detergent as of this moment but she needed to see him so she had to order something that sounded urgent for daily use. Sitting on her couch as she read a book, she waited patiently for the doorbell to ring. It took longer than three minutes but she wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. What if he’s double check his look as well like she was? Their last interaction sounded more friendly, even calling it a bit flirty. Reading a few more lines, the books was starting to make sense less to her and she realized her focus was anxiously at the door. Groaning, it had been approximately 10 minutes since she heard his truck so she had to take a subtle peek at the window. His truck is out there but where is he?
Katrina opened the newly fixed front door courtesy of Nick and as she stepped outside, she looked around and finally saw him by her neighbor’s door, chatting and laughing like he was there for a personal visit. Karen kept laughing and at one point, she even has her hand on Nick’s arms and it was annoying to see. A newly divorced single mother already clinging onto to the hottest guy in town (something she refuses to openly admit) and the worse part of it is that Karen is 23 years older than Nick. And is he enjoying this? Why is he laughing along with her? She’s spoken to Karen and there’s not an ounce of laughable humor in her except for the fact that she immediately jumps to marriage after a month of meeting them. Hence, being divorced four times her entire life.
“Excuse me?” Katrina had to call out and she got both their attention immediately. “Hi, Karen. I was wondering if Nick has my grocery? I’ve been waiting for about an hour now.” Katrina reasoned out, trying to exaggerate so Nick would remember he’s currently on duty.
“Sorry, Kat. I was just giving him a...generous tip for the delivery.” Karen explained, handing Nick the cash to let him go. “I’ll see you on my next order, Nicholas.” She added, giving Nick a wave as she went back to her house. Nick turned to Katrina, wondering why she was suddenly so uptight again. Katrina just rolled her eyes and went back inside her house.
Jogging back to his truck, he grabbed the paper bag of Katrina’s only ordered item. Twisting the knob, he was glad that the door is still fix from when he was last there. “Hey. What’s up? You okay?”  He asked, putting the bag down on the ground.
“I’m fine. You clearly looked like you’re more than okay.” She scoffed, going to her bag.
Nick chuckled and shook his head at her, confused with what was going on with her. “What is that supposed to mean?” He asked, still chuckling because a pouty face looked adorable on her.
“I’ve been waiting for my order and when I heard your truck, I thought you’re finally here and...I can finally do my laundry but when I checked outside, you were too busy charming the newly divorced Karen.” She noted, shaking her head as she let out a breath, scouring through her bag as if she couldn’t find her wallet to keep him there longer. “Stop flirting with her. She’s basically the age of your mother, I assume. And you’re on duty, remember?”
If Nick were to assume anything about this, he’s gonna think Katrina was jealous. So instead of fighting back with the same attitude, he found himself smirking. “Look, we were just having a quick conversation. It’s what I do with all our customers to build connection. And she didn’t call me a...nosy stranger so that’s why we talked a bit longer.” He explained himself, even if he really didn’t have to. Getting the bills out of his pocket, he showed it to her. “See this? $100 tip. She’s too rich to even think about how much bills she hands over.”
“So it’s all about the tip. Is that what you’re saying? She gave you a 100 and I gave you a 20 so your services for me could wait?” She asked sarcastically.
Nick pressed his lips together and shook his head, looking down. “The money helps because I’m saving up to move out of my parents’ house. But also because Karen is welcoming and always smiling. And she talks to me like a person, not her personal errand shopper even if it’s my job to deliver her groceries.”
Now, Katrina feels bad. She was annoyed at first but now, she was realizing that she’s overreacting, just because her neighbor was giving attention to this sweet guy in front of her. “Sorry.” She finally said and it surprised Nick. She’s capable of humbling down? “I don’t mean to...treat you anything less of a person. I just...really needed the laundry soap.” She explained.
“Didn’t I deliver a gallon to you last week?” He asked curiously. “How many times a day do you do laundry?” He added with a chuckle.
Katrina felt her cheeks burn, realizing she was caught with her excuses. Immediately, she had to think to her feet. “I spilled the bottle last night so...it all went down the drain. That’s why...I needed the detergent already. I’m two days behind my laundry.” She explained, hoping he would believe it.
Nick nodded, figuring she really needed the bag already. “I’m sorry it took me longer to bring your order in. But I’m here now and...I’ll get out of your hair ASAP so you can get started on the laundry.” He said, suddenly thinking of something she might want to consider. “I have an idea. Give me your phone.” He asked and Katrina just gave him a look. “Give me your phone. I’m just gonna put in my number.” Nick said and Katrina wanted to ask why first but she just found herself handing over the phone. Putting his number in, Nick saved his name with the emoji of a soap next to it, to connote their laundry soap emergency today. “If there’s anything you need from the store, especially if it’s an emergency purchase, whatever time of the day, you can call me. Or text me. Whatever works for you. Hit me up and I’ll deliver it to you in a flash.” He assured her, hoping that made up to his slacking today.
Katrina was surprised, finding this completely unexpected. She really didn’t need the laundry soap in an instant but now, he was giving her more than the services that covered his job. “Nick...this isn’t necessary, I don’t want to be a bother.”
Nick shook his head, insisting on the gesture himself. “It’s fine. Let me make it up to you. So I can also...move from being the nosy stranger to a friend.” He added with a chuckle.
“I’m never gonna hear the end of that comment, am I?” She asked, chuckling along and Nick shook his head. “Fine. If I get access to emergency services then...take this tip. It’s the least I could do. So...you can finally move out of your parents’ house.” She added, handing over double the amount of tip she gave him the last time.
Holding onto the cash, Nick nodded at her and smiled. “I’m gonna take it, okay? I’m planning to move out in a couple of months so...I really need it.” He added, chuckling.
Suddenly, Katrina got curious about something. “Is it...out of town?” She asked, hoping she wasn’t being the nosy one this time.
Nick nodded, pressing his lips together. “Just...the next town over. I’m still looking for a job opportunity so until I do...I’ll be your delivery guy for a little while longer.” Nick told her, wondering if this new found friendship could be a reason for him to want to stay.
Katrina didn’t know what to say right now, refusing to react immediately. Thankfully, Nick spoke up next to put an end to the 20 second silence. “Anyway, I’ll...let you do your laundry. I gotta get back to the store anyway.” He said, giving Katrina a quick wave and nod as he headed out the door.
