Right, right... Well, there's many different reasons.

Sometimes, Pokemon become different due to their diet, like Alolan and Kantonian Pikachu turning into different typings due to their diets. I've even noticed that my third Pikachu here, Scrap, is different from the other two, as well-due to him growing up and living in the abandoned power plant.

Sometimes, their environment changes them. From my studies, it seems that Hisuian Growlithe had a rougher time living in the harsh environment in Hisui back in the day, which hardened them-in a sense.

And sometimes, sheer emotions can change Pokemon to be entirely different. The note I received with this Hisuian Zorua, which I have named Nogitsune, says that their origin seems to have been from Unovan Zorua being left by crude trainers, and them growing so much anger and hatred that they change their typing. This one is an entirely new experience for me, and Nogitsune seems to get along great with Zozo. Maybe they both know how cruel trainers can be and can bond over that.

Of course, there's also Shiny Pokemon, like Mint, my Azumarill... And some Pokemon have been selectively bred to look different, either for certain tasks, or even just because they 'look cute'. It's theorized that Eevee's easily manipulated DNA is caused by selective breeding, but there's no proof backing that up yet.

Have a tiny bit of small Max being smaller! More of this verse found here. Jumps somewhere a bit different in the verse, just an excuse for a hug tbh.

Max has been seven years old for two months. 

Daniel's got used to it. They have a routine, because Max likes routine, and it turns out Daniel's also feeling happier now that he has a reason to eat three meals a day and go to bed at a reasonable time and wake up to Max peering at him from the end of the bed, flag book in hand. He's got used to the Jimmy or Sassy cats following him around and watching him go to the toilet or get dressed, because of course Max's cats are the perviest cats. 

He's got used to a lot of things. He's got used to putting Max first. 

He's definitely got used to the Guardianship papers that legally bind him to Max until Max is an adult again. 

But he hasn't got used to waking up to the sound of Max crying. It's rarer now than when Max first came to stay, but it's a sometimes rather than a never. And tonight it's worse, because the noise that wakes him up is a scared, high pitched cry that Daniel knows instinctively is Max even if it doesn't sound like his normal tears. Because when Daniel walks into Max's bedroom— because he has a bedroom now, with pictures on the wall and his toys and a labelled drawer that Daniel isn't allowed to go in where Max keeps his special things — it's not a seven year old Max that's crying up at him. 

This Max is smaller, is small-small, is a fucking toddler. He's all twisted up in his Pikachu sheets, the doona half off the bed, and his too-big pyjamas are hanging off him. He's little. He's got younger. 

Daniel, terrifyingly, doesn't know if Max will know him, or if he'll be a grown up stranger in the middle of the night. 

"Maxy-Max," he says softly. "Are you okay?" 

This tiny, toddler version of Max has flushed red cheeks and tears everywhere and snot. He sees Daniel and immediately holds his hands out, and Daniel, overcome with relief, sinks down on the bed and lets Max scramble into his lap and into his arms. Daniel hugs him. 

"Danny, Danny, Danny," Max says, hiccoughing through his tears. Daniel is normally Daniel to Max. Danny is for goodnight hugs and middle of the night tears. Max clings to him. 

Daniel reaches for Max's favourite Pikachu toy, a little well-loved in places, caught under the pillow and half off the bed. "Were you missing Pikachu, Max?" 

Max tucks Pikachu into the tiny little gap between him and Daniel's chest. He rubs his face on Daniel's t-shirt. He snuggles closer, hugging Pikachu. He stuffs his thumb in his mouth, looking up at Daniel like he knows Daniel's going to make him stop sucking it. Daniel isn't. Max has already been through his childhood once. Daniel's not going to stop him doing a single thing that brings him comfort this time around. What the fuck does it matter, anyway? Nothing about this is normal. Going Small normally lasts a couple of days at most and has most kids aging upwards. Max has been seven for two months and now he's smaller. The universe doesn't tend to de-age beyond about seven, unless the kid is going to be a hundred percent safe at the other end of it. At least that's one good thing about this: the universe knows Max is safe with him. This little Max toddler, sleepy and tear-stained, who knows and loves Daniel and is holding on to him tight. 

Daniel kisses the top of Max's head, and snuggles him closer. He's probably two-ish. It doesn't matter, though. His crying's lessened. He's tucked into Daniel's chest. He's already going back to sleep, cheek pressed to Daniel's shirt. 

"Love you, Maxy-Max," Daniel tells him. His hand strokes Max's back. 

Max falls asleep between one breath and the next, clinging to both Daniel and Pikachu. In the morning, if they wake up and Max is still tiny, Daniel will pay extra for a one hour delivery window for a Go Small Toddler kit.  

Daniel's clearly going nowhere tonight.

I think what I mean to say is that, while I'm not necessarily immune to it, I generally have little interest in Astérix things that treat it like a franchise or general pop culture icon rather than literature. I don't think I'd consider Astérix literature - not even because of the can-comics-be-literature debate but rather just because it relies so heavily on its visuals for the humorous delivery that it cannot be divorced from its status as visual art. However, just because it's popular doesn't mean it has to be treated like you'd treat Mario, like Spiderman, like Dragon Ball. Where much of the appreciation as a fan is about owning the action figures or shirts or any spin off in which they happen to appear; themes becoming irrelevant.

Astérix is already unique in that in lieu of being a face to which anything can be attached, the core of his identity is tied to three things: the apolitical yet satirical faire-rire, the homely simplicity of his life and its pleasures, and successful resistance to unnecessary change, adversity and oppression, despite looking tiny and unimposing - all the while taking pride in the very things for which you are persecuted.

To say nothing of how Astérix can be seen as a critique of the post WWII modernisation France faced to the detriment of the more basic and human underbelly of its culture, this means that general franchise shenanigans such as merchandise and games and theme parks which otherwise have nothing to say lose their inherent Astérix-ness by default. The entire reason Astérix is so popular and so brilliant is gone, and as such, the reason anyone should want to buy it is also gone. You could reply that even if all of this were true it is still enjoyable to appreciate the world of Astérix purely for affinity's sake, but to that I say : what world? Besides some very basic plot points which stay somewhat consistent, everything within Astérix is malleable to keep the pacing convenient and to align it with whatever's funny. Details that might render Astérix more grounded and unchanging are disregarded the moment it is more productive for them to be different. Those fandom-type discussions are wholly unproductive for Astérix because you will never get anywhere; those things were never the point. And that's probably why it doesn't have a fandom (again it's literally just me with an active dedicated Astérix account because I'm weird).

It's easy to not realise this because so many people grew up with Astérix, and hence don't necessarily appreciate it for its brilliance but rather just because it's What Was There in their childhood. Most pop culture is somewhat like that. But Astérix isn't selling a combined 200 million just because kids have it read to them at bedtime; it is genuinely stunning as a series. It's why parents speak fondly of it rather than "that stupid book you always read". Sure, other pop culture icons have their genuine merits, but I think you can get away with ignoring this the majority of the time. Like, Pikachu doesn't suddenly lose what makes him so iconic because you're wearing him on a t shirt as opposed to rewatching the scenes where he refused to get in the Pokéball. When you really get down to it, it's because he's cute and everyone knows who he is. Contrarily, what even is Astérix stripped of the series' context and humour? What reason does anyone have to appreciate him divorced of what made him rise to worldwide success in the first place?

This might appear like a You Need A Very High IQ To Understand Astérix sort of argument but I don't mean that. It is true that, in my humble opinion, Astérix is special and has more depth than most pop culture icons; but even assuming I did not believe that, I think it's just a matter of recognising the series has a very particular tone that cannot be translated into mass production.

(Clair's special delivery is a full day late this year, and Greatheart feels awful about it. He's never ever been late before--but Silver's weather was one hell of a streak-ender. Oh well.)

Greatheart mumbles a bashful greeting down at Pikachu before presenting Red with the loaded pack. It's filled to the brim with colorful hard candies, a fully-stocked first aid kit from the Goldenrod Dept. Store, and a small wooden box stuffed with Blackthorn's finest teabag selections. Laying on the bottom of the bag is a glossy, autographed trading card--Clair's trading card, sporting a very grumpy dragon tamer trapped within its holographic frame--and a small, crumpled note.

Happy birthday, you big dummy. Somehow you've made it another year while barely following any of my advice. You're lucky I care so much.

The League got inspired by Galar and made us pose for these stupid cards. You now have the only autographed copy of mine, ever. You're welcome. It's going to be worth a lot some day.

It was a fine day, at Liam is watching the ducks in the river while Jack feeds the ducks with some bread. "Those ducks look very hungry when they have their bread!" Liam said. "I agree with you Liam, those duck sure loved that bread!" Jack said. Just then, a seagull passed by, and it scared the poor ducks! "Hey, that seagull scared them, and I was enjoying watching them eating the bread!" Liam said as the seagulls eat the pieces of bread that Jack dropped for the ducks. Just then, Jack had an idea on where they could go. "Speaking of seagulls, I was thinking about on what we could go to, the harbour!" Jack said. Liam liked that idea that Jack said. "That would be a great idea Jack, and you could take your binoculars, we will be able to see the cruise ships and also the delivery boats that carry supplies from over the world!" Liam said as Liam and Jack went back to their karts and getting those binoculars for Jack. At home, they are trying to find the binoculars, but it seems they can't find them somewhere. "Hmmm, where did I put them last time?" Jack said. Liam knows where the binoculars are. "I know, maybe they could be in one of the drawers in our room!" Liam said as they went to find the binoculars inside the drawers. They opened up the drawers, and they have found the binoculars. "There are my binoculars, now let's go to the harbour to do some boat sightseeing!" Jack said as they went onto their karts and drove to the harbour. At the harbour, they could see loads of delivery boats parking and the goods are being shipped. "Wow, they sure have a lot of supplies to be taken!" Liam said. "Yeah, must be a lot there indeed! Well, my binoculars are ready for some good views of the sea and even watching the boats go by!" Jack said as he looks to his binoculars and tries to see the boats from a far distance. "So, can you see anything like a cruise ship?" Liam asked. "No, but I will try to find one!" Jack said. Just then, Jack could see a cruise ship going to the island. "Oh look, I just found a cruise ship, and it's taking the tourists on the island for a good time!" Jack said. "That's amazing, maybe we could look for more of those cruise ships!" Liam said. When Jack was about to see some more cruise ships, he could see pikachu's face close up. "Hey, I never seen a cruise ship like that before, so rare!" Jack said. "Well Jack, that's actually captain pikachu, and he is the owner of this harbour." Liam said. Jack stops looking to his binoculars and sees captain pikachu. "Hello there mateys, what brings you to my harbour?" Captain Pikachu said. "Well, we are here for some boat sightseeing, and we need we could be able to have a closer look at those boats." Liam said. "Well, I'm happy to help, my telescopes haves some better viewing and a perfect picture!" Captain Pikachu said. "Wow, maybe I don't need my binoculars after all!" Jack said as he puts away his binoculars. Captain Pikachu takes them to the two telescopes and they used them. "Wow, they sure are much better than the binoculars!" Liam said as they try to look at the ships. Just then, they could see a transport boat, and it's carrying something special. "I wonder what it will contains?" Jack asked. "Well, you will soon find out!" Captain Pikachu said. the transport boat arrived, and it opened a statue of captain pikachu! Liam and Jack where so amazed about that captain pikachu! "Wow, where was this from?" Liam asked. "Well, there is a special gold mine farm in Japan, and they craft some special statues and they are also unbreakable!" Captain pikachu said. "Well, you could put this statue in the middle of your harbour Captain Pikachu" Jack said. Captain Pikachu liked that idea from Jack. "Great idea there matey, it will make it perfect for the others to view the statue!" Captain Pikachu said. Liam took out the camera and took a photo of the statue. "Now, I will take this picture home and put it on the picture frame!" Liam said. And with that, the captain pikachu was placed in the middle of the harbour. "Now other people can take some good photos with my own statue!" Captain pikachu said. They all took a group photo with the captain pikachu statue and have a picture each. "Thanks for the pictures for that captain pikachu statue!" Jack said. "Thanks, I'm going to continue on with my work, so I will be able to see you mateys next time!" Captain pikachu said as Liam and Jack waved to Captain Pikachu and drove back home.

Pokemon Crystal "Free to Play" Run Part 1

Time to give this a try. I remember very little about the specifics and the hidden secrets of Generation II, so... um... this may be a doomed run. We'll see.

Here we go. No glitches, no catching any Pokemon whatsoever, and no buying Pokemon either. Free to play.

Once again, I don't have enough spaces, and don't have access to numbers so... FTP again.

... Who the hell is this? Her daughter is adamant about becoming Prof. Elm's assistant? ... Was that ever brought up in Pokemon Special? Hmm. I can probably use this in an upcoming Short.

There's some asshole looking into the lab and no one ever notices him. ... This lab has one entrance, and an assistant who wanders around that only entrance doing literally nothing else. How did this asshole get in and steal a Pokemon? ... I guess through the window??

Heh. Unlike Prof. Rowan who just stares at you, this dude begs you for help. "Please, we're drastically understaffed because we can't afford any helpers! You're not getting paid for this either!"

"Partner" my ass. ... Oh wait, Free to Play run. ... Er... Yes. Very important. Especially considering the later parts... Taking Cyndaquil for now and will deeply regret my decision at the end of this post.

So this is what a battle looks like from an outsider's perspective. ... So... how do the battles in my Yellow version runs look? "That dude's Pikachu is... er... blue."

Why does my character have a blue Pokeball? Did I merge a Pokeball with a Squirtle already? And this asshole's arm is... kind of messed up. Either his hand is as long as his forearm, or his arm can reach past his knee.

"My name is ???" ... Sure. I didn't ask for his name or his life aspirations, but I guess he's lonely. Well, f*ck him.

Er... I think there's a dude named Ricky in here who wants to trade you an Onix for a Bellsprout. But that requires me to CATCH a Bellsprout, so... nope.

... Huh. That's actually a thing. I thought the mandatory Trainer's School was given that name in Pokemon Special only. I guess the "orphanage" part is new. ... Orphanage... I miss the kids in Morning Glory...

... Where is the teacher? Did he f*ck off and abandon the class? There are like 12 seats here and only 4 kids, 2 of which are playing Pokemon games in the back. ... Wait, what?

I thought there was a path around the dollar sign. But I guess that's HGSS only?

Hey, this is guy who, back in the days, everyone thought was referring to Pokerus that you can only find in the grass around him. ... Back in those days, people also thought that shiny Pokemon were extremely rare variants that appeared in specific places. ... I found Pokerus in my actual Gold version. And Ruby. ... And then I spawned it in Silver! See my GSC Joy Run posts for that shenanigans.

... Sheesh. Sorry for being broke. There's a reason why this is a Free to Play run...

Hey! A gift Pokemon! I wonder what's inside? It better be good! Because I am very lacking in the Pokemon department!

Just like Misty's Starmie, Whitney's Miltank is no match for this finely curated, moldy, nasty-ass fromage. Now there should be no more problems!

... So here I am in Ecruteak. And... This is it, huh? ... The first Water Stone you can get is in Cerulean Cape, so... I physically can't progress past Olivine City. Nothing here gets Surf. ... Um... so... I guess I absolutely needed to have picked Totodile at the start of the game. This run was doomed the moment I picked Cyndaquil. "Truth is, the game was rigged from the start."

... F*ck. This is like those very old text based adventure games where you could have f*cked yourself over at the start of the game and wouldn't find out until like... 10 hours in.

Well then. Part 1 is a proof-of-concept run. I'll restart with Totodile for Part 2. And looking at this right now, my team by the end is going to be...

Feraligatr (Surf, Whirlpool, Cut), Fearow (Fly), Togetic (Flash), Espeon, Dragonite (Waterfall), and... something other than Pichu from that Daycare random egg. I wonder if Togetic can learn Fly. If that's the case, I don't need the Fearow and I can replace it with a Hitmonlee/chan/top. ... If I remember where Tyrogue is, anyways. Might be that cave right next to Ecruteak...
