Spirit Work: The Power of Hanging Out

Elaborate rituals, intense meditations, and huge gestures have their places in spirit work. There's value in putting a massive effort into something for the spirits you venerate or work with. And sometimes, you need to do these big things for a particular outcome or as part of your tradition.

I have a bias against big, elaborate rituals for this purpose, though. In my practice, it's just unnecessary. All of the relationships I have and maintain with spirits are, at their cores, friendships. They're not working relationships, they're not worshiper-worshiped relationships, they're not transactional relationships. My spirits are my friends.

So I approach working with them like friendship. I'll light a candle and set a cup of coffee or tea on their altar in the same way I'd offer a friend a cup of tea when they visit. If I'm working on something, I'm accustomed to body doubling as someone with ADHD, and I like to invite my friends to work alongside me. In the same way, I'll invite my spirit friends to participate or just hang around while I work.

Heck, they hang out while I write these posts sometimes!

Not everything in spirit work has to be intense and serious. Yes, you should be respectful -- in the same way that you should be respectful to your neighbors and your friends. And yeah, not all spirits can or should be treated this way.

But I would like to posit the humble power of Hanging Out.

What I Mean By That

Literally. Hanging out.

Whatever you normally do to "call" your spirit(s), do that. My method is lighting a candle of some sort. Sometimes, I'll choose a scented candle if I'm trying to lure a particular spirit to the area, but an unscented taper candle will do just fine.

And then, you hang out. That's it.

If you're watching YouTube, invite the spirit to watch with you. Ask their opinions on what to watch, if you have an easy way to communicate with them. (One of my spirits loves Ghost Hunting TV Shows. He thinks it's hilarious.)

If you're playing a video game, leave space on the couch for the spirit to settle next to you to watch.

Make dinner, chat about your days. Set aside a little plate for them if you want. Eat together.

The Value in Hanging Out

The idea here is that time is valuable. Time spent with someone else is valuable on its own, even if that time is spent doing little to nothing "productive."

Think about your friends and the people you enjoy spending time with. It isn't always clubs, parties, exploring, hiking, running, traveling, or whatever else you do. Even if that's how you met or your main activity together, there are always casual moments. Easy breakfasts, simple conversations, sleepovers in your PJs, watching movies.

Quality time is powerful. Choosing to spend your time with someone sends a clear message: "I value your presence."

Not everything has to be an elaborate party. Sometimes, all you want is to sit down and hang out.

Why can't it be the same with spirits? The answer is that it can. In my practice, I rarely do anything that elaborate. I'll put extra effort in for special occasions like holidays, but usually, it's a simple act of lighting a candle, saying hello, and then sitting down with the spirit to just hang out.

Not every relationship requires constant, intense focus. Especially if you're looking to befriend your spirits, rather than just work with them, the Power of Hanging Out is a valuable asset to keep in mind.

It doesn't have to be every day, either. I have a sort of open, standing invitation for whichever spirits to hang out whenever they like. They're welcome to chill anytime, unless I ask to be left alone. Because of our relationship, they respect that. (Usually -- the only time they don't is if something urgent has come up or they need something.)

I developed the theory of Hanging Out years ago. Spirit work was where I started, and it's always been Home to me. But it's intense sometimes, and a lot of what I was doing was burning me out very, very fast. So I adapted on the fly, as one does, and it ended up working really well.

Now, Hanging Out is my primary method of doing spirit work. Even with spirits I don't know or in new locations, there's value in projecting an aura of "I'm just here to chill. Feel free to talk to me, or don't. It's cool." Spirits, shockingly, respond to that. I end up with a lot of interesting, casual conversations, light taps on the shoulder to let me know I've been acknowledged by something that doesn't want to talk, and various visual anomalies from shy critters in the shadows.

Think of it like slow blinking at a cat or offering the back of your hand to a dog. Approaching respectfully and calmly in a very casual way attracts things that otherwise wouldn't show themselves. The Power of Hanging Out is alluring to even the shyest spirits.

Again, obviously, this won't work for all spirits. Do what works for what you work with. I've found Hanging Out works best with ancestors, house spirits, land spirits, and assorted ghosties over the years. It's not so good with, say, the Good Neighbors. But hey, maybe your experience will differ.

Extra Benefits of Hanging Out

Aside from the relationship benefits of casually sitting and hanging out, there are even more practical benefits. As a side-effect of adapting spirit work in this way to work for me, my senses for spiritual energy shot through the roof.

I've always been pretty sensitive. I'm that weird kid at the next table over in the restaurant who clocked the spirit of your recently-deceased aunt who left you her necklace which you're wearing under your shirt and which I couldn't have possibly seen. But when I started Hanging Out and just existing in a space with spirits, everything sort of... exploded.

It's like recognizing your family's footsteps coming down the hallway. When I stopped trying to force myself to understand and recognize every scrap of energy, it all washed over me instead. And in the Energy Soup, I started to recognize more signs and signals without effort.

This is, in my opinion, the greatest benefit of Hanging Out, even for people who don't do spirit work at all. There's no meditative aspect to it, really (though you can certainly meditate to enhance it, if that's something you do). It's just sitting and being receptive.

I don't think this method will work for everyone. People who have zero sensitivity to spirits may not see any results. But I think it has value even for those people.

At its core, Hanging Out is a mindfulness exercise. If you can't be with spirits, be with yourself. Put the call out to whoever or whatever you work with, venerate, sense -- or things you'd like to get to know better. See what answers.

Light a candle.

Say, "If you want to come sit with me and watch TV, feel free. I have popcorn."

Hang Out.

This pick a card will tell you a bit about how Feb.14th will go for you.

Reminder: Do not choose the photo you find most appealing/aesthetic/beautiful. Choose WITH your intuition. Meditate or pray on it, close your eyes and really get in touch with yourself, eliminate noise. Go with your instinct/gut feeling. On valentines day, I see some sort of opportunity for a romantic union or a coming together with you and another person. this could be a date with your s/o or someone new, or something in some way is happening in which you and someone are coming together in partnership. 2 of cups is like the biggest signifier for love and romance with another person, so I def think this is in the books for you this feb.

Further, you are going to be having a spiritual awakening in love (you're going to realize who's meant for you or why a connection ended/should end or how to pursue a love you've been wanting). Whatever it is, it's going to feel shocking, like a revelation, and it's going to bring you together with this special person on love day.

Queen of cups is advising you to trust your gut, and the song saying it comes naturally is telling me that the right connection on v-day is one that makes you feel intuitively safe and one that feels not forced (this will be part of your big, spiritual realization on the fourteenth, for sure). Luckily, I think this new love or partnership that is coming on the fourteenth is a good thing as the 2 of cups is such a great signifier for a healthy romantic time, but let's get a signifier card to better understand what is going on here with 2 of cups. I got 6 of cups as a clarifier; in other words, someone from the past is coming in and is going to romantically approach you. it may be an ex. If this offering feels comfortable and natural, go for it. if it feels in any way the opposite, the cards are telling you to run. You really need to trust your gut on the fourteenth. With the photo, I am willing to bet this is someone who wants to sweep you off your feet or treat you like a princess/pamper you (if they have not already acted this way previously) on v day, soooo sweet lol.

Further, with the sun at the top on the oracle, this is telling me you do have an opportunity to have a lovely and positive valentines day, just choose wisely who you spend your time with, pay attention to gut feelings, and know that some sort of love offer from your past is coming in fast and furious. I do see the potential for a romantic outing here though.

One more signifier for the judgement card: High priestess. wow. I have gotten trust your gut messages for this entire reading; so pls know that this is your most important message and advice for your valentines day. Again, this card is neutral, it is not telling me much about the past lover coming in as to whether to trust them or not; it is just saying, be smart, listen to your inner voice, do what feels best for you on valentines day AND KEEP THAT IN MIND if an ex contacts you. if everything feels safe and good to you, it just might be that way, and you might be getting a very positive and beautiful love offer here. but if you have a weird feeling in your gut about anything, EVEN if he is wanting to pamper you and give you princess treatment and is coming in to offer love, do not fall for it. You are clearly an intuitive person, use that to your advantage, and i see you'll have a romantic, and wonderful v day if you do so.

Firstly, I am noticing tons of 3's in your reading. The song expresses a sadness from the singer because their lover found somebody else, which expresses a 3 person dynamic. Your oracle card has triangles within triangles written on it. And you drew the three of swords. This seems to be no coincidence. I have a feeling that on valentine's day, your heart is going to feel broken in some way either by something that happens shortly previously to vday or on vday. The three of swords really encapsulates a heartbreak (im sorry to say this love).

Secondly, justice speaks of karma, speaks of truth-telling, speaks of people getting exactly what they deserve. With the 3s, it is certainly possible 3 ppl are involved in this mess here. Maybe you will get cheated on (or have recently and it is all unfolding around v-day), or there is some sort of love triangle in which things are not working out in your favor. Know this though, on valentines day, the justice card is telling you that things will balance themselves out, and if someone betrays/betrayed you, they will karmically get what is coming to them. If it is you who has betrayed someone, then it is the opposite, you will get what you karmically deserve here (especially if you are dishonest about stuff, as the card "speak your truth" really emphasizes a need for honest conversation here).

King of cups denotes a partner who seems devoted, caring, emotional. Maybe this is your current partner or a person who has betrayed you, or maybe it is you. it is likely the person who has more masculine energy. Signifier; The sun. This person seems very warm, kind, genuine to you. They make you so happy. It is probably shocking to you that something could be going wrong in your connection.

I get the feeling you really love/connect with this person and with the lyric " I'm picturing your body with somebody else", your heartbreak is really encapsulated here. Gosh, Pile 2 ! I'm so sorry, this seems like a rough valentines day, and even possibly a rough month for you? However, it is not all shadows, so do not despair. The justice card is a hint that the truth always comes out, and the truth is ALWAYS better than deceit, even while painful. So know, that by valentines day, you will know the truth about any sort of betrayal or anything that someone you love may be involved in, you will not be kept in the dark.

I will ask for a signifier regarding the justice carD: page of pentacles. this gives me the feeling that you may PHYSICALLY find something or have receipts. Justice card is encouraging you to speak your truth, if you have found some sort of proof of unfaithfulness or someone doing you dirty in any way, even if its valentines day and it feels like ill timing, bring it to the table and communicate with them.

Advice on how to have the best valentines possible despite these negative messages and potentially hard implications: The hermit card. Spend some time in your own skin. After you communicate with this person, share your truth, stick up for yourself, and hopefully get some truth in return, spend some time alone with yourself. It is hard to hear this message on valentine's day, but hanging around this person or others just will not be the best thing for your mental state as of rn. Spend some time, cuddle up, watch a funny movie, take care of yourself, reflect on the situation by yourself if it helps you feel better, if not just pig out on icecream. Really though, treat yourself with something sweet on this day, cuz you deserve it! And know that things WILL get better, even if this is a hard day/time for you. I can feel that things will turn around for the better after this. Sending so much love and light.

The High Priestess II The Lovers VI Seven of Wands

I really see valentines day as a self love day for you! A day where you work on yourself, you care for yourself, and you prioritize yourself (perhaps after needing this for so much time!). I see this as a day where you are going to regain some confidence with the lyric " I'm too much of a boss, baby its your loss, now you gotta live with it". You may think or reflect on an ex or person who stood you up, but you're not looking back with regret or sadness, you're literally thinking "damn he/she/they were an idiot because i've got my ducks in a row". And I love that for you! And this is not false confidence either, the high priestess is all knowing and intuitive. You know in your heart that you've got many great qualities and that any sane person should recognize you're a catch.... cuz you are.

But on v-day, other than that energy of reflecting on people before, it is less about love for you and more a professional/academic/creative pursuit you are placing focus on. You are going to have two paths or decisions that you can make on valentines day (and they are important, they will change the course of your life). One is going to be way more risky, with the seven of wands you will be calculating all the worst-case scenarios, and honestly, there are a lot. it is not exactly a safe choice. However, it is a passion-filled choice i'm seeing with the lovers, and the seven of wands is showing you have ambition, and you have your own wand/stick to fight against the risks, so while there are risks, you are able to fight against these challenges. the oracle literally is saying "allow the unknown", so I'm getting the advice here that for valentines day, spirit says choose the riskier and more adventurous choice!

Yes, it is risky; but you are a force to be reckoned with, and you need a little challenge in your life rn. You're also so, so unique and talented; the picture shows a golden heart in a black and white world, as well as the oracle with a palm that has intricate designs and fingerprints. There is something special and distinct about you and your ideas, and while one of the choices here may have many opponents lining up going against you, or maybe just the odds being stacked against u, you just may have what it takes despite this due to your uniqueness. So the cards are saying go for it! Keep loving yourself and being confident on valentines day and have faith in yourself.

The high priestess shows that you will intuitively know that the riskier choice is more for you, you have a keen understanding of these things. so do not doubt your gut feeling.

Just so we have a bit more of an idea of the tough choice you'll have to make, here's a lovers clarifier: The fool. Hah omg. So many signs are saying that you should jump into whatever this is without overthinking. I'm getting the choice may be something to do with adventure, with creativity, a new idea. Maybe a business venture? Or anything you've not fully tried before? Something the world has not yet seen? Oh my, someone is going to have quite the eventful valentines day. For the lyric I got "baby, let the games begin.", and with seven of wands I literally heard in my head " beating them off with a stick" about your suitors, cuz you have so many competing over you. There are clearly lots of ppl interested in you on valentines day, it may feel even overwhelming how much people will compete to get your attention or get you to go out on v day. Nonetheless, know that, while attention may feel nice (any leo risings here?) not all of these suitors are right for you or will contribute to your life in a positive way. I am getting that two in particular may stand out to you.

The tower brings a lot of drama and destruction. And I think that represents two things for you this v day. 1. just the chaos and drama that may ensue due to all these people fighting for your attention, as well as the passion that will bring. 2. The potential for some of these guys/girls/people to be no good for you... the potential they may fuck everything up in your life, bring about a lot of games, drama, just toxic energy that is a no no. If you do not choose correctly who you spend your energy on, destructive relationships will ensue.

Nonetheless, you as the chariot, need to take control of your life. You cannot let a toxic person get the best for you... you need to make a choice that will support your future in a positive way for your love life. This person may have blonde and/or voluminous hair. They will have a very positive and funny personality. Think, golden retriever. They will be relationship oriented, and romantic. It may be someone you're currently seeing or just a crush.

2. Seven of swords, king of cups

Possible signs: Gemini, Aquarius, Cancer, Scorpio, Capricorn

Spirit is telling me this other option is not the person to go for this v-day. They are sneaky and dishonest with you either currently, or if not, even worse, they have the potential to be like this in a future relationship with you. They may be witty, smart, cunning, and chatty; yet also emotional and traditional. They may have the habit of talking down to people. For looks, I am not for sure, but possibly a trendy sense of style, shorter in stature, blue eyes. This is not likely someone you're currently dating; either a crush or someone who has pursued you and you're thinking about seeing.

Remember, choose wisely and act insightful! And passion, while great, does not always mean a person is the best option. Pay attention to how people treat you and if their values align with yours and your future plans. Random message, but i feel like you'll get a cheek kiss this v day!

This season, you're being presented with a new beginning. There are going to be multiple opportunities for you to grow and expand in exactly the ways you’ve been dreaming of. If you've been working on manifesting something, this season is when it will come to be; and it may not take the form you’re expecting. If you feel blocked with this, make your manifestation intentions less specific. Sometimes we can make too many guidelines for the Universe, which makes it more difficult for things to align. Because Pentacles often represents finances, there’s likely to be some unexpected money coming in. This could take the form of a gift, finding money tucked away. or a raise, or booking higher paying commissions/gigs. Spirit wants you to know that what's coming for you will require some hard work, but nothing you can’t handle. It will be a matter of listening to your body and honoring when you’re getting tired so you do not burn out. Persevere, and you will see amazing things come out of it! You're strong and capable. 7 of Wands & The Hermit

This season, you're going to be met with some challenges. These don’t always come from your environment; they can come from within. I’ve often seen 7 of Wands in regards to self limiting beliefs, comparison syndrome, imposter syndrome, perfectionism, even anxiety, ocd, etc. Your Spirit Guides want you to know that they’re always supporting you to overcome these obstacles, whatever they may be. They provide their protection and healing when you need it. Remember, they cannot interfere with free will, so if you need assistance, you must ask them. If you have trouble receiving their messages or energy, try using an intuitive tool, like a pendulum, oracle or tarot cards, runes, etc. Spirit also wants to remind you that your inner guidance will best lead you. When you feel like you're fighting against the current, take a time out to tune into your inner wisdom. Find sanctuary so that you can gain perspective before jumping back in. If you’re moving through a difficult or dark time, be careful not to isolate too much. This will exacerbate feelings of loneliness, sadness, anxiety, negative self talk, or any negative energy. Allow yourself time alone, but do not forget we all need some support. Happy fall, friend!

4 of Pentacles & The Lovers

This season, you're doing your best to hold onto something, likely resources and money, but this could also simply be referring to your energy. You’re budgeting something, being mindful and aware of the needs of your future self. By saving or holding onto things, or energy, it gives you a better sense of control, and maybe control is what’s really needed right now. Spirit wants you to know that while it's wise to save for the future, you still need to live. Be careful that you aren't completely shutting yourself out from the world in order to watch your budget (financial, energetic). Instead of completely restricting yourself, make smart choices on where your energy or money is going. Time with friends will be a great way to have fun without spending too much money. Or, treat yourself, no matter how small, to some self care. Use what you have on hand. There is a way for you to come into balance without feeling restricted. A path toward harmony is available to you right now. Trust that the Universe has your back. If things feel stagnant, look around you to see what can be let go of. Maybe it’s time to go through your home and donate some items. Happy fall, friend!

1. Community & Care IS available for you.

It just may not be what you expect.

Having an open mind & being able to reciprocate others is key to accessing relationships that pour into you. Don’t forget about whose showing up voluntarily. Don’t create walls or reject the wrong people because of old wounds & misdirected anger.

2. Sometimes Consequences an individual or group experiences isn’t your battle to fight.

Their “struggle” could be and mostly likely is their karma playing out, their truth being activated and their salvation being worked through. But it could also be YOUR distraction! Don’t get so tied up in mediating! Don’t be so quick to defend and attempt to rescue others from fate & the timing and work that God is doing on them. Sometimes we play Savior too much & too soon. When we have our own plight to carry, someone else’s load will always look lighter. Collectively & communally SHARE the LOAD, yes, but do not drop your own. Take this and apply it how you will….

I don't know what it is, but something is definitely happening. A month ago i started seen 19:19 almost every day then it started to happen either with all the other numbers. This happens to me almost every day, sometimes even more than once and never on purpose.

Seasonal Divination: Halloween/Samhain

I do divination throughout the year. Occasional single-card draws to see how a day will go, three-card spreads to answer questions, spirit communication with all sorts of methods, readings for others... Divination of all sorts (particularly tarot) is a pillar of my practice.

For some holidays, though, I like to do extra divinations that are specific to that holiday. New Year's Eve and Day, the Equinoxes, Midsummer, and the day of the first snowfall are examples of days I mark with special divinations.

The biggest one for me, and for many witches, is Halloween. Like a lot of others, my practice was born (and reborn!) around this time of year. Something about the atmosphere and the changing season encourages introspection and connection to the realm of magic. Whether you believe in the thinning veil or not (personally, I'm dubious about it), there is an energy to the days surrounding Halloween that can't be denied.

In my practice, I don't do Samhain or consider this to be my new year. Rather, this is the turning point where the weather tips into cold. It's a time of anticipation. Preparations for the dark half of the year start at the Autumn Equinox, but they become more urgent and real around Halloween as we take in the last fruit and vegetable harvests of the year.

Halloween is a big day for spirit work for me. This is the day when I call on my spirits to give me guidance and advice -- whatever they want to say. I don't ask any questions. I just draw and interpret using a standard spread.

The Spread

You can technically use this at any time of year, but I recently redesigned this spread specifically for Halloween and spirit work purposes.

This is an eight-card spread intended to receive general advice and guidance from spirits. In particular, I'm looking for advice I either missed, ignored, or didn't understand previously.

The cards, in order, are:

Me (or the querent), one card (1)

Opportunities, two cards (2 & 3)

Areas of growth, two cards (4 & 5)

Obstacles or warnings, two cards, one to modify opportunities, one to modify growth (6 & 7)

Wild card, the certified "yell at me" card, intended to let my saucier spirits say whatever they want within the spread (8)

So, the spread ends up looking something like this:

Using the Spread

Often, even divination is pretty casual for me. But this, like other special holiday spreads, requires a bit more involvement. Note that it doesn't really matter what time of day this reading is done, but I typically do it after nightfall.

First, I light at least one candle. Several is ideal, but one will do in a pinch. I prefer to do this at an altar or in a space that's been set up specifically for spirits to visit and use. I'll set out an offering such as whisky, coffee, bread, or cookies for the spirits in return for their wisdom. Remember: Even if your relationship isn't purely transactional, it's respectful to give something in return for a spirit's efforts.

Next, select a deck. Any deck will do, but I prefer ones that my spirits are particularly attached to. For me, this is usually my Deviant Moon Tarot, which you can see pictured above.

Now, we shuffle. I like to shuffle for jumpers, but you can do it however you like best. If no jumpers pop out, that's usually a sign that there's no message for me right now, and I ought to try again later. But sometimes, I'll feel called to stop and draw or pick a card from somewhere random in the middle of the deck. It all depends on which spirit sets their influence in the moment. Set the cards down in order as they jump or are drawn.

Once all the cards are down, interpret as usual.

The self card represents me (or you, as the case may be). It's where I am right now in the moment, how I'm feeling, and my current status.

The two opportunity cards are just that -- opportunities. These are things coming up that I should take advantage of. They could pertain to relationships, money, or life in general.

The growth cards are more personal. These are areas of focus to improve myself and grow as a person. Whether it's in relationships, spirituality, self-love, or something else, these cards represent the path of development.

The obstacle cards correspond to the opportunities or growth areas they sit between, representing the things that stand in their way. They show possible conflicts, problems, and things that will prevent growth or opportunities from reaching me, or things that will prevent me from taking those opportunities.

The wild card is a bit different. This card is intended to be a sort of "free space" for the spirits to use to say whatever they want. It could have to do with literally anything. Often, this card ends up being a message I missed or misinterpreted at the time I originally saw it, redelivered with a bit of attitude.

Take notes on your observations. I write down everything, whether I think it's relevant or not. I'll also take a picture of the spread to paste into my digital grimoire. Everything speaks. This reading looks at the next several months. Every so often, I'll come back to these notes to see how accurate it was and draw on the wisdom offered.

Once your reading is complete, thank your spirits. Sit with them for a while before blowing out the candles (or snuffing them, whichever you prefer) and cleaning up the space.
