BLOOD FOR DRACULA
Immediately after completing Flesh For Frankenstein, filmmaker Paul Morrissey and star Udo Kier created Blood For Dracula, a sumptuously depraved Euroshocker that tows the line between art and bad taste. Desperate for virgin blood, Count Dracula (Kier) journeys to an Italian villa only to discover the family’s three young daughters are also coveted by the estate’s Marxist stud (Joe Dallesandro of Morrissey’s Flesh, Trash and Heat). Stefania Casini (Suspiria) and Bicycle Thieves director Vittorio De Sica co-star in one of the most unique and outrageous vampire films in history, now scanned uncut in 4K from the original negative for the first time ever.

SAW The Musical The Unauthorized Parody of Saw (New York Off-Broadway)
One of the most thought-provoking horror films of all time now is…a musical. SAW The Musical hilariously captures the events of the first movie parodying the Saw that started it all following from where Lawrence Gordon and Adam Stanheight find each other for the first time in the bathroom trap. Will they follow "the rules" as they discover each other's secrets? Will they escape the game in time and saw right through? A love story with fluidity (and lots more fluids), 'SAW The Musical The Unauthorized Parody of Saw' is Little Shop of Horrors meets Avenue Q, pushing the boundary on sexuality and how to love. The Department of Housing Stability (HOST) partners with many agencies citywide to provide shelter for people experiencing homelessness. There are many shelter facilities throughout the city, so rather than requiring people in crisis to navigate a complex system, we have identified specific centrally-located facilities as the "front door" access to the entire system. These locations have longer hours for intake and have transportation available to other facilities. They can also help people navigate which shelter facility is the best option for their individual situation.
The Department of Housing Stability is now offering a free circulator bus service for persons experiencing homelessness from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
1. 48th Ave Men's Shelter - 4600 48th Ave. - Denver Rescue Mission Serves Men. 24/7 shelter, three meals a day, showers, restrooms, and Next Step Services. Must be accessed from Lawrence Street Community Center.

These programs reflect a concerted effort by various organizations and city departments in Denver to address transportation barriers faced by the homeless population, enhancing their access to essential services and support.
Navigating the City Without Wheels: The Transportation Struggle for the Homeless
In the landscape of urban challenges, one of the most pressing yet often overlooked issues is the lack of accessible transportation for the homeless population. Mobility, a fundamental aspect of urban life, becomes a significant barrier for those living on the streets. This article explores the difficulties faced by the homeless due to the absence of reliable transportation, underlined by pertinent statistics and studies.
The Scale of the Issue
Access to transportation is crucial for meeting basic needs, seeking employment, attending healthcare appointments, and more. For the homeless, the absence of personal transport or the means to afford public transit can severely limit access to essential services and opportunities. According to a report by the National Alliance to End Homelessness, transportation barriers significantly impact approximately 20-30% of the homeless population, hindering their efforts to secure housing, employment, and access health care.
Compounded Challenges
The impact of transportation difficulties on the homeless is multi-faceted:
Employment: A study by the American Journal of Public Health found that 55% of homeless individuals cited transportation as a major barrier to employment. Lack of reliable transport means missed job interviews and employment opportunities.
Healthcare Access: Transportation barriers are associated with missed or delayed healthcare appointments. The Journal of Community Health notes that 10-15% of homeless individuals have reported missing medical appointments due to transportation issues.
Shelter and Food Access: Moving between shelters, food banks, and other service locations can be a significant challenge. The American Public Transportation Association highlights that the lack of transport can lead to increased vulnerability, especially in severe weather conditions.
Public Transportation and Its Limitations
While public transportation is a potential resource, it is not always a viable solution for the homeless. Cost, despite discounted fares in some cities, remains a hurdle. Additionally, many shelters and service providers are located outside the central areas served by public transit, making access to these facilities a challenge.
Innovative Solutions and Community Efforts
Recognizing these challenges, some cities and organizations have begun implementing innovative solutions:
Free or Subsidized Transit Programs: Some cities have introduced free or subsidized transit passes for homeless individuals, though these programs are not widespread.
Shuttle Services: Certain non-profits and shelters offer shuttle services to and from essential service locations.
Bike Sharing Initiatives: Some communities have started bike-sharing programs specifically targeted at the homeless, offering an affordable and flexible transportation option.
The Road Ahead
While these initiatives offer some relief, a more comprehensive approach is needed to address the transportation barriers faced by the homeless. This includes policy changes to expand and fund transportation assistance programs, integrating transportation planning into homelessness support strategies, and increasing collaboration between transit authorities, non-profits, and social service agencies.
The struggle for transportation among the homeless is a critical issue that requires immediate attention and action. Enhancing mobility for the homeless is not just about providing access to transportation; it's about restoring independence, facilitating access to essential services, and supporting the journey out of homelessness. As we continue to seek solutions for the myriad challenges faced by the homeless, addressing their transportation needs remains a pivotal part of this collective effort.

The Riviera Theater, Uptown, Chicago
4746 N Racine Ave, Chicago, IL 60640
Opened Oct. 2, 1918
C.W. Rapp and George Rapp, architects
Balaban & Katz, original owners
Seating Capacity: 2,500
Jam Productions, current owners
Current use: Concert venue
Completed in 1917 by architects George and C.W. Rapp (Rapp & Rapp), it was built as a movie theater for the Balaban & Katz chain. Transformed into a private nightclub in 1986, the Riviera Theatre is now one of Chicago’s premier concert and special events venues.

The Riviera Theatre was the largest and most ornate of the movie theatres of the Uptown neighborhood until the opening of the Uptown Theatre almost a decade later. Opened October 2, 1918 with Lina Cavalieri in “A Woman of Impulse”. Built at a cost of well over half a million dollars (delayed by almost two years due to World War I), this Rapp & Rapp-designed house located on N. Racine Avenue between Broadway and W. Lawrence Avenue, originally seated 2,600 and its building also featured eight storefronts and over 30 apartments. Initially the Riviera Theatre was to have been operated by the Jones, Linick & Schaefer chain, which operated several Loop movie houses in the 1910’s and 1920’s such as the Orpheum Theatre, the Rialto Theatre, and the McVickers Theatre. However, the Riviera Theatre ended up becoming the second major theatre of the Balaban & Katz circuit, which at the time also included the Central Park Theatre, now regarded as Chicago’s first true ‘movie palace’. Featuring movies accompanied by the orchestra of S. Leopold Kohl, the Riviera Theatre also featured “high class” musical acts on stage. It was initially equipped with a Barton theatre organ which was later replaced by a Wurlitzer organ. The theatre mainly catered to the upper-middle class residents of the Uptown area, especially women. The Riviera Theatre continued to remain one of the neighborhood’s most popular movie houses for decades, even once the almost 4,500-seat Uptown Theatre opened just down the street. By 1977 it was in its final days as a full-time movie theatre as occasional live concerts were beginning to be staged. It became first a nightclub in 1986, and a few years later, after the nightclub closed, one of Chicago’s most popular concert venues, as it remains today. It still has a feel of faded elegance to it, and in 2000 the concert hall was named one of the historically important structures making up the Uptown Square National Historic District.

In a scene still from the American drama film A Woman of Impulse (1918), Leonora, the opera singer known as "La Vecci" (played by Lina Cavalieri) sits in her backstage dressing room receiving visitors.
The Riviera Theater was open to the public on the weekend of October 14-15, as part of the Open House Chicago weekend sponsored by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. It was my first time inside the theater.

Jam Productions thoughtfully provided a booklet with a history of the Riviera and reproductions of archival photos. A couple of the images are scanned below.

Such stage sets were often inserted for the performance of "prologues" or musical numbers before the movie screen would be lowered for the film showing.
As usual, interior photography is difficult without a tripod, and though some of these images are blurry, they give a good impression of what remains a stunning interior.
Sometimes thought of as a "companion" to the much larger Uptown theater just across Lawrence on Broadway, the Riviera was built first, and inspired the slightly later Chicago Theater in the Loop.
The purple wall color is not original, but there are no current plans to change it to the muted tones of the original scheme. A couple of original stencil designs have been uncovered in the lobbies, which will eventually be reproduced. The murals in the auditorium are faded and covered by grime and nicotine, but being backed by heavy paper rather than canvas, their restoration will prove tricky, and there is no current timeline for this process.
I was a bit mystified by the lack of theater seats on the main floor, which resembles a large concrete-floored nightclub rather than a theater. Never having been to a concert in this venue, I imagined what a standing-room crowd would experience here. the balcony level, however, has recently-installed theater seats, and seems a comfortable place from which to enjoy music.
The lobby features one of the original chandeliers from the Granada Theater in Rogers Park; somewhere there is a companion piece, which Jam hopes to acquire eventually for the outer lobby. The huge light fixture isn't exactly elegant; seen from the upper lobby, its design seems rather awkward. That, in my opinion, is one of the weaknesses of early movie palaces, which strove for an overall "wow" effect rather than architectural refinement or historical accuracy of detail.
Here are my photographs from my visit to the theater on October 14:

Stepping Up Prayer Life
Here are two groups I have joined for free online that may help you with your prayer life. Your own church or one nearby may have ministries too, that can help grow in devotion or model after our Mother. You may be able to make one of your own.
The Rosary Confraternity
“Each member of the Rosary Confraternity strives to pray the complete Rosary each week (3 Rosaries, 15 decades, and this does not bind under sin, complete details here), and must have his/her name inscribed in the register of the Confraternity. There are no meetings, and no dues….”
Association of Marian Helpers
“Marian Helpers are men, women, moms, dads, grandparents, families, and even children who support the mission of the Marian Fathers in various ways. They are people who, maybe just like you, are looking for ways to belong to something that is doing great good in the Church and the world….As a Marian Helper, you'll share in the benefits of all the daily Masses, prayers, and good works of Marian priests and brothers all over the world…”

God’s Will
St. Zechariah did not believe the news from the angel that his wife, who was older in age and struggled in fertility with him, would bear a son named John that would prepare the way for the Messiah. Since he did not believe in the will that was God’s, considering the circumstances, the angel made him mute until after St. John was born. Mary, on the other hand, was the opposite. Being found in favor with God, she opened herself to God’s will in amazement, when she heard she would conceive Jesus. Many times in life, people go about their lives under their own will, their own concerns, many times without thinking of God’s will for them and others. To model after Mary, try to open yourself more and more to the will of God and do not be afraid. Remember that God loves you so much more than you will ever know in this life alone. Mary is a wonderful saint we can draw inspiration from.
Hope this helps! May God bless you. 🕊

J.C.F. Grumbine’s Spiritual Path Involved Larceny, Libel, Kidnapping & Seduction
Over the years, Cincinnati has spawned a plethora of unconventional religious leaders from Millerites to Theosophists, with Agnostics and Spiritualists tossed in for good measure. Few were as colorful or controversial as J.C.F. Grumbine.
Growing up in Cincinnati, Jesse Charles Fremont Grumbine was a deeply thoughtful lad. Over the years, his theological investigations took him along a highly unconventional and eventful transcendental journey that involved a lot of young women.
Jesse’s father, Jeremiah Grumbine, came to Cincinnati from Maryland and set up a business manufacturing trunks and suitcases. He later became a city police officer and eventually a clerk at the Post Office. Jeremiah and his wife, Mary, had five children, all of whom pursued professional careers. Jesse’s older sisters became teachers, one brother became a doctor and another a lawyer. Jesse, born in 1862, graduated from the old Woodward High School and went off to St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. St. Lawrence was founded by the Universalist Church and Jesse joined the clergy of that church on graduation, assigned to a congregation in Syracuse, New York, where he married his first wife, Helen Gilbert.
Jesse’s restless spirit found the Universalist Church too confining and transferred his credentials to the Unitarians. In his new church, Jesse occupied pulpits in New York, Missouri and Illinois. The Missouri posting, although reported back in Cincinnati as providing a “large salary” didn’t cover Rev. Grumbine’s rent. He lost other positions because of his liberal politics and bounced to Pittsburgh and St. Paul where he finally gave up traditional religion for Spiritualism. Within a few years, Grumbine was listed among the top practitioners of that occult sect in a book titled “Light of Truth Album”:
“Mr. Grumbine is one of our most active workers at present. He was tor many years a highly respected Unitarian minister at Geneseo, Ill. Being free from orthodox bias, he had the courage to look into Spiritualism with the inevitable result of proper investigation. Seeing more truth in Spiritualism than in creedalism, he gradually merged into the former and is now a regular speaker in our ranks. He is yet a young man, and highly gifted intellectually. His lectures are both scientific and spiritual.”
Tumblr media
In Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Boston, J.C.F. Grumbine established a variety of educational organizations under several names, including the College of Divine Science and Realization. He also called his organization “The Order of the White Rose,” which he described as a branch of the Rosicrucians who received guidance from beyond the grave from the late poet, Elizabeth Barrett Browning. A description of his new society appeared in a 1905 spiritual directory:
“The objects of this Order are to establish a Universal Religion, generically designated the Spiritual Movement. It does not occupy the place or sphere of any other kindred organization. Any graduate of the College of Psychical Sciences or member of the Order can organize a Chapter where such reside. Application for membership in the Main Order. must be presented through an official channel, or addressed to J. C. F. Grumbine, 1285 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, Mass.”
Grumbine was a prolific writer, churning out a couple dozen brief books on occult topics and constantly on the lecture circuit, visiting some cities, notably Chicago and Washington, so often that he was considered a resident pastor.
It was in Washington that Grumbine’s morality was called into question. His lectures caught the attention of teenaged Lucille Hunt, daughter of a young, socially connected widow. In 1901, when Lucille turned 18, Grumbine hired her as his secretary and gave her a teaching position in the College of Divine Science. She moved into Grumbine’s rented house, and claimed that her mother had stolen some important church papers she had been studying.
Grumbine fired off a nasty note to Mom, demanding the immediate return of church property. His heated missive was accusatory to the extent that Mrs. Hunt had Grumbine arrested and charged with libel. She told the newspapers that Grumbine had hypnotized her daughter and was holding her prisoner in his house.
As the Washington Globe [13 October 1901] reported, the “church property” were very personal letters from Rev. Grumbine to Miss Hunt.
“One of these letters leaves no room to doubt the relations of Grumbine and his victim. It is too obscene to even outline and consists principally of the most passionate description of every portion of the body of the young lady, omitting nothing! It is unspeakably obscene and shocking. The man who penned it ought to be locked up for life as a sexual pervert. ‘Lillies’ are the flowery designation he gives her breasts, but in the letter in question he does not confine his description to the language of flowers but vulgarly names each and every portion of her body.”
No wonder Grumbine wanted the “property” back. All the scandalous newspaper coverage consistently reminded readers that he had an invalid wife and two young daughters back in Syracuse, New York.
And then, the case took a turn to the bizarre. Mrs. Martha Hunt, Lucille’s mother, was herself arrested and charged with grand larceny by a wealthy Washingtonian named James Fox. Mrs. Hunt, Fox alleged, rented his furnished house while he and his family spent a year in Europe. On their return, they found books, household linen, glassware and “bric-a-brac” missing. After some months, they brought charges against Mrs. Hunt after, it was revealed, they were tipped off by none other than Mrs. Hunt’s daughter, Lucille.
Despite the salacious content, both lawsuits faded out, Mrs. Hunt being cleared of charges and her libel accusation against Rev. Grumbine settled quietly. Lucille returned home to Mom and they moved to Brooklyn, where Mrs. Hunt got a job as a bookkeeper for a jewelry store and Lucille taught in the public schools. Lucile never married.
Rev. Grumbine’s long-suffering wife, Helen, succumbed to heart disease in 1908. Five years later, in Los Angeles, at age 50, he married a 30-year-old member of his congregation. The couple relocated to Portland, Oregon, the bride’s hometown. It was there that the Rev. J.C.F. Grumbine passed beyond the veil. His obituary, in the Portland Oregonian [8 June 1938] noted:
“At the time of his death, Rev. Mr. Grumbine was general missionary for the General Assembly of Spiritualists of the United States and Canada. He was a Life Fellow of the Society of Science, Letters and Art, of London.”

An Asian restaurant in Toronto was slammed with more than a dozen infractions from city health inspectors. Riz North Asian Cuisine prides itself on its 100% gluten-free kitchen and serving the finest and Celiac-safe Asian fare, including its signature Peking duck, honey garlic ribs, moo shu chicken, and pancakes.
It also sells some of its menu’s favorite items frozen at several retailers and on its website. Riz, located at 3321 Yonge St., north of Lawrence Ave., was hit on March 24 with significant, four minor, and one in the “other” category.
It had inspected five times since June 2021; it passed with one or minor infraction, while times it received condition passes. Its four crucial violations are storing potentially hazardous foods at an internal temperature between 4C and 60C, storing ice in an unsanitary manner, failing to protect food from contamination or adulteration, and maintaining the premises in a permits adverse effects on food.
Of its six significant infractions, two were concerning pests (failure to protect against harboring and retraining records of pest control measures taken for one year). The other four were sanitary-related (failing to keep the sanitary facility sanitary, not maintaining handwashing stations with soap and paper towels or equipping them with a dryer or single-use paper towels, and sanitizing utensils in a chlorine solution of fewer than 100 parts per million of available chlorine.)
The minor infractions were the food-handling room was in sanitary condition, free from equipment not regularly used, and its ceiling was in good condition. Also, Riz ensured the equipment surface was sanitized as necessary. Upon inspection, it was noted that Riz failed to present a food handler or supervisor during all hours of operation.
