Penny Valley Profile: The Railway
The Penny Valley Railway is a heritage railway in South-West England. The line runs from a shared station with Network Rail at Totnes down through Rattery, Avonwick and Ivybridge before reaching the town of Plymouth. Through Plymouth, the rails run parallel to the main line, sharing Plymouth Station and Dockyard Station with Network Rail, the PVR sometimes receives freight contracts from the various shipping companies in the docks, giving the resident pair of heavy freight engines something to do. Beyond Dockyard Station, the railway follows the mainline as far as the River Tamar before it branches off, having a completely separate stationof it's own in Saltash. From there, the railway finally reaches it's namesake town of Penny. From Penny, a line branches off to the towns of Tillworth and St. Harriet’s, with a colliery at the bottom of a 5-mile 1:50 gradient at the end of the line.
The line began life as the Penny & Tillworth Railway Company in 1864 running between the towns of Penny and Tillworth with an extension to St. Harriet’s to profit from the colliery. At the 1923 the grouping, it was absorbed into the Great Western Railway and all of the company's original designs were sold for scrap, by which time it had grown to it's full length. In 1948, the line was nationalised under the Western Region of British Railways. In 1964, the line was declared redundant and closed to traffic. A small group of volunteers, not willing to let their railway die away, rallied in the town of Penny in 1965, selecting the wealthy business partners of Mr. Jones Luke and Mr. Stephen Hughes. The pair had made their fortune in the shipping industry and had always wanted to move into railways. With countless long hours from the volunteers and thousands upon thousands of pounds, the railway opened again in 1967, the first train being hauled by a banged-up, raggedy Caledonian 264 by the name of Craig. From there, the railway's fleet grew and grew, but that's a story for another time.

Top Five Biblical Men (besides Jesus)?
AH. WHAT A GREAT QUESTION. THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH.
1. Jacob. Because of the whole wrestling with God matter.
2. Judah, because his redemption arc makes me cry (thanks Tamar I guess) and when he offers himself as a slave in Benjamin's place I cry every single time 👌🏻 we love character growth.
3. Job. Obviously.
4. Saul. Underestimated in comparison with David if you ask me. And I too need music to handle the demons
5. Jonah. Just the actual worst prophet ever but then again, who amongst us never got angry at God for loving the most hateful people and forgiving the unforgivable? Also excellent book from a narrative standpoint.
Sorry new testament but the Hebrew Bible slays, lol honorable mention to St. Paul, here, whom I will defend for my entire life. I will NOT let the calvinists claim him. Do you have a top 5 men in the Bible?

Tasmania may be small
but it is a most diverse and interesting State. Separated from the mainland by the Bass Strait, the historical and wilderness delights of this magnificent island bring visitors flocking to its shores. Many come by air, but the vehicle and passenger ferry is becoming increasingly popular -with a good highway system and many reasonably priced hotels or bed and breakfast establishments, motoring is probably the best way to experience this small island. Sounds good? Do you want to 2023 Nude Calendars? Order 2023 Australian calendars here.
Tasmania covers an area of 68,331 sq. km -roughly the same size as Ireland. Each region offers quite different natural landscapes and features. The State's northern part is gentle farmlands and rolling pastures between large outcrops such as the Great Western Tiers. This huge mountain range extends across the centre of Tasmania, separating the wilderness of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park from the agricultural region and Launceston to the north. The Tamar Valley, the State's premier wine-growing region, is near Launceston. Along the north and east coasts are many magnificent beaches, some stretching for many kilometres; there are fishing villages with excellent surfing to the north-west. The west coast features wild rivers, which cut through an area of rugged beauty that is rich in mineral wealth and timber; the east is rich in agricultural land.
In the southern part of the State are the magnificent Huon and Derwent valleys and Tasmania's capital city, Hobart. Many of the southern towns, such as Richmond, feature magnificent historic buildings. The Tasman Peninsula in the far south-east is home to Australia's most notorious convict settlement, Port Arthur; Bruny Island is another popular summer holiday destination here.
The climate in Tasmania is amenable throughout the year. Spring and autumn are mild to warm, but the nights can become very chilly and it can rain. Summer sees long warm to hot days, with pleasant nights. During winter, much of
the mountain country is covered in snow, ideal for skiing. Heading down from the mountain tops, the climate is still chilly and the nights are cold. The west coast boasts 360 days of rain each year, so pack a raincoat if you are heading there. During winter check with authorities on road conditions for the higher peaks.
Originally inhabited by Aboriginals, the island was first sighted by Europeans in 1624. Dutch navigator Abel Tasman arrived off the west coast and named it Van Diemen's Land after the Dutch Governor of Jakarta.
In 1777 Captain James Cook anchored off Bruny Island, and 27 years later Colonel David Collins established the settlement of Hobart. The white settlement of Tasmania soon led to the near extinction of the Aborigines -the authorities at that time took it upon themselves to rid the State of the Aboriginal people. When Truganini died in Hobart in 1876, for quite a long time it was thought that she was the last of the Tasmanian Aborigines, but there are still descendants of the Tasmanian tribes.
Tasmania's beginnings were as a convict colony, and there are remnants of penal settlements found all over the island, with the most notable being Port Arthur. This settlement was set up in 1830, and over the next 47 years an estimated 12,500 convicts passed through its gates. The settlement is extensive, and many of the buildings, including the solitary confinement cells, have been carefully restored. Tours, including the eerie night tours, are highly recommended.
Sarah Island, on Tasmania's wild west coast, is a similar site -the most hardened prisoners were kept in conditions not unlike those of Port Arthur.
Tasmania's vast mineral wealth has led to the establishment and growth of many towns, particularly on the State's west coast. Around Queenstown, gold was mined originally, but after most of the gold had been extracted copper was mined, with the subsequent deforestation causing considerable damage to the surrounding hills. Silver, lead and tin have all been mined at Zeehan, with tin mining continuing today.
With turbulent rivers gorging through the rugged mountain ranges, hydro-electricity is the best source of power for Tasmania -the island produces more energy than it needs. Many power stations are open to the public for inspection.
Much of Tasmania was forested when Europeans first arrived and timber was used for buildings both within Tasmania as well as on the mainland. Among other uses, Tasmanian blue gum was used to build the wharf areas on the Thames in London, and also to underpin the streets of Melbourne. There are several paper mills in Tasmania, including the Australian Newsprint Mill in Boyer, which produces more than 250,000 tonnes (275,500 tons) of paper annually, the Australian Paper Mill in Burnie and the Tasmanian Pulp and Forest Holdings in Triabunna, which produces woodchip.
Much of the island is World Heritage listed or national park land and it is quite likely that some areas may never have been explored by Europeans. A journey into the parks will reveal stunning lakes (St Clair or Dove Lakes), towering sheer precipices (Ben Lomond National Park), limestone caves (near Mole Creek), and vivid coloured rocks (Freycinet National Park). The most popular area is the Franklin-Gordon Rivers region, which was steeped in controversy during the 1980s when it was proposed that the Franklin River be dammed. Today the 'wild and still undammed' waters are World Heritage listed, testimony to a case won by the persistent actions of many environmentalists and campaigning by environmental groups.
There are many outdoor activities on offer in Tasmania, including bushwalking and horse riding. There are easy strolls in gentle, rolling countryside or along coastal heathlands, and more rigorous and lengthy treks through remote areas of the national parks; horse riders can trek along the beaches or across mountain ranges. Other possibilities are rock climbing, downhill and cross-country skiing, canoeing, whitewater rafting, abseiling, hang gliding, mountain biking, jet boat river riding and 4WD touring. You will even find camel riding! Marine reserves provide excellent diving and snorkelling.
Tasmania also has much to offer the gourmet, with excellent wines in the Tamar Valley-Piper's Brook Vineyard produces fine chardonnay, pinot noir and riesling -and the nearby Heemskerk, Dalmere or Dalrymple. Dairy produce is superb, with many cheeses and creams, including camembert and brie, available, and seafood is abundant.
Tasmania really is an isle of contrasts, with rugged mountain ranges, magnificent scenery, pristine sandy beaches, historic towns and fine food and wine -no wonder it is called the Holiday Isle.

SYNAXIS OF THE HOLY TWELVE APOSTLES OF CHRIST
Peter, Andrew, James and John the sons of Zebedee, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Jude the brother of James, Simon the Zealot, Matthias.
Tumblr media
The Synaxis of the Glorious and All-Praiseworthy Twelve Apostles of Christ appears to be an ancient Feast. The Church honors each of the Twelve Apostles on separate dates during the year, and has established a general commemoration for all of them on the day after the commemoration of the Glorious and First-Ranked among the Apostles Peter and Paul.
The holy God-crowned Emperor Constantine the Great (May 21) built a church in Constantinople in honor of the Twelve Apostles. There are instructions for celebrating this Feast which date from the fourth century. For lists of the Apostles' names, see: Mt.10:2, Mark 3:14, Luke 6:12, Acts 1:13, 26.
The holy, glorious, all-laudable Apostle Andrew the First-called is also commemorated on November 30. He was the brother of Saint Peter (June 29).
The holy, glorious, all-laudable Apostle James is also commemorated on April 30. He and his brother John are the sons of Zebedee, and were called “sons of Thunder” (Mark 3: 17).
The holy, glorious, all-laudable Apostle and Evangelist, virgin, and beloved friend of Christ, John the Theologian is also commemorated on September 26 and May 8. He and his brother James are the sons of Zebedee, and were called “sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:17).
The holy, glorious, all-laudable Apostle Philip is also commemorated on November 14.
The holy, glorious, all-laudable Apostle Bartholomew is also commemorated on June 11 and August 25.
The holy, glorious, all-laudable Apostle Thomas is also commemorated on October 6 and on the Sunday after Pascha.
The holy, glorious, all-laudable Apostle and Evangelist Matthew is also commemorated on November 16.
The holy, glorious, all-laudable Apostle James, the son of Alphaeus, is also commemorated on October 9.
The holy, glorious, all-laudable Apostle Jude is also commemorated on June 19. He is also known as Thaddeus (but should not be confused with Saint Thaddeus of the Seventy, who is commemorated on August 21), and was the brother of Saint James (October 23).
The holy, glorious, all-laudable Apostle Simon the Zealot is also commemorated on May 10.
The holy, glorious, all-laudable Apostle Matthias is also commemorated on August 9.

HOLY QUEEN DINAR (10th c._Georgia)
Tumblr media
The Russian Church has preserved chronicles of the life of Queen Dinar, a woman who achieved much on behalf of the Christian Faith. For years scholars have disputed about the historical figure discussed in great depth in the Russian Church. Many believed that the sources described Holy Queen Tamar, but the period of Tamar’s rule does not match that of the figure described in the chronicles. The Georgian chronicle Life of Kartli, however, has preserved information about a certain Dinar, Queen of Hereti (southeastern Georgia), who, along with her son Ishkhanik, converted Hereti to the Orthodox Faith and delivered its people from the Monophysite heresy in the 10th century. Queen Dinar’s story resembles that recounted in the Russian Chronicles more closely than any other.      According to the Armenian historian Moses of Kalankaytuk, Slavic tribes that carried out incursions in the southernmost Caucasus often journeyed through the Transcaucasus, and it was with these tribes that the story of Queen Dinar made its way to Russia. The Georgian Church renders great honor to Holy Queen Dinar. As a result of her zealous labors and achievements, a large part of the eastern Transcaucasus was saved from the Monophysite heresy that dominated the region.      Today, on the north wall of the Throne Hall in the Moscow Kremlin, there hangs an image of Holy Queen Dinar mounted on a white horse, victorious over the enemy.

MARK 3:13-19
13And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him.14 Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach,15and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons: 16 Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter; 17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, "Sons of Thunder"; 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite; 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. And they went into a house.
1 CORINTHIANS 4:9-1
9For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. 10 We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! 11 To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. 12 And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; 13 being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now. 14 I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. 15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you, imitate me.

Grishaverse timeline-ish question for you if you know! Do we have any knowledge about what religion in Ravka or elsewhere in the grishaverse was like when the Darkling was young?
Thanks for the ask!
In summary, saints seem to have been a concept for a long time, but there’s not a lot of other detail.
For the long version:
I’ve consulted some of the tales from The Language of Thorns and the Istorii Sankt’ya for references, when the tale featured a person shown to be non-fictional within the context of the book universe.  For example, Magda from The Witch of Duva was a contemporary of Baghra and young Aleksander per Demon in the Wood.
I think you can take or leave those pieces as you like, as the fact that the underlying person is real in-universe doesn’t mean all the other details of the tales are of course.  IRL, long-lived stories have often seen their religious context updated to later periods than they were originally written in.  For Grishaverse purposes, I think that’s unlikely to have been the intent, but it’s a fun notion to play with if you want to go a different direction.  That said, the mention of saints is pervasive in nearly everything.
The only writing focused on the Darkling as a child is Demon in the Wood.  While there isn’t direct discussion of religion at the time, there are a few pieces we can draw from to check against other books:
- Ravka is specifically spoken of, telling us this is past the point where there was not yet a country in that area.  (On a tangent note, we also see that Balakirev is already an established location too, as well as Os Alta.) - Petyr of Brevno, Baba Anezka, and Magda of the black woods are all mentioned as people Baghra and Aleksander have met personally - Not mentioned in the text, but of course this is after what at some point came to be seen as the martyrdom of Sankt Ilya, given that’s Ilya Morozova - While not related to Ravkan religion, the fact that Shu Han has temples is mentioned and that they have red roofs. - ‘Witches’ and ‘demons’ are a concept, ones that are specifically called out as likely to indicate Grisha are present in an area
Sankt Petyr of Brevno, Sankt Ilya in Chains, and Sankta Lizabeta are all mentioned as being in the in-universe version of the Istorri Sankt’ya in Shadow and Bone.
In King of Scars, Tamar and Yuri tell others of the tale of how the Priestguard was first created.  Zoya names them ‘children’s stories’, so what was said above still applies.  But said stories tell that Yaromir the Determined, the first Lantsov king, was the one who founded Ravka as a unified kingdom.  That he prayed to ‘all of the Saints who would hear him’ - so if these details haven’t been altered over time, saints were already a concept before Ravka was founded - and that monks arrived with an offer of help.  So, the concept of monks also likely existed.
Juris, Grigori and Elizaveta* are all characters in King of Scars and all are worshiped as saints in Ravka. From their own words, we learn that they are VERY old indeed.  If their designations as saints occurred not long after their original martyrdoms, that says the concept of saints is likewise quite ancient.  Elizaveta says ‘We have lived lives so long they would dwarf the history of Ravka’.
* The actual character is called Elizaveta, but the saint version of her is remembered as Lizabeta.  Perhaps this was done as a nod to how long back the real Elizaveta’s story was first told.  IRL these are two different forms of the same name, with Lizabeta also being only one letter off from a diminutive of Elizaveta.
In looking at the faerie and saints’ tales, we find:
- Lizabeta is mentioned as praying and thinking on the ‘great works of the Saints’ when she was a teenager. - Grigori is mentioned as speaking to ‘his saints’ just prior to his martyrdom - In The Witch of Duva, people pray to saints. - In Little Knife, saints and chapels are both mentioned.  This is the story featuring Baba Anezka, though there’s not much context of where it might sit in time compared to Aleksander’s youth. Ravka and Os Alta exist, Anezka is mentioned as ‘ancient’.   - Saints and priests and Saint’s Days are all mentioned in Petyr’s tale. (An interesting tangent note there is his martyrdom came of helping a village defeat a demon, one that is not depicted in a way that implies it’s a Grisha, but something more supernatural.)
A guess I made in a long ago meta post has so far been borne out by later revelations:  I suspected a lot, if not all, of the saints were actually Grisha.  Since then, I can’t think of one we’ve learned more about where that doesn’t seem to be the case.
A quick note on religion in Ravka-related things mentioned in the books in addition to saints:  praying over icons, Butter Week (Maslenitsa IRL), church on Sundays, chapels, cathedrals, convents, monks,  saints being honored on their designated Saints Days, the Feast of St. Nikolai in winter, Sikurian Psalms.
So far I haven’t found much about religions elsewhere than Ravka in the past, save the mention of Shu Han’s red-roofed temples.  Fjerda existed at least as far back as Ravka too, so perhaps the concept of Djel goes back at least that far.  Also, there’s a saint tale in the Istorii Sankt’ya about two saints who are from Shu Han, so that’s interesting!

Pious Formulas on Georgian Money
Tedo Dundua
Deities are depicted on the coins struck in pagan Colchis (Western Georgia) and Iberia (Eastern and Southern Georgia). With these states being baptized in the 4th c., the gods were substituted by the saints. Christian pious formulas also appeared on money issued in kingdom of Georgia, obviously less “pious” than the inscriptions on the Byzantine coins. Greek inscriptions are mostly like as follows: “God, do assist . . .”, “Holy Virgin, do assist . . .”, “Cross, protect . . .”. And we have different pious formulas on Georgian coins: “Christ, exalt . . .”, etc. (D. R. Sear. Byzantine Coins and Their Values. Second edition, 1987, reprinted 1994, 1996. London, pp.33-34; https://www.academia.edu/35768659/History_of_Georgia, p. 204 n. 1). Full picture is presented below.

That is all. After, Christian pious formulas completely disappeared on the coins.

Moon taught that God did NOT create the angels in pairs – meaning that God broke one of his own “creation” laws
Tumblr media
Re. If illicit sex with Rev Moon can restore women in the position fallen Eve to a sinless state, then why didn’t sex with sinless Adam restore fallen Eve in the garden?
______________________________________________
Great point! Also, the Divine Principle tells us that God is a God of order, laws and principles. It also states that God is unique, absolute, eternal and unchanging …. therefore his laws are unique, absolute, eternal and unchanging. Put that together with the Divine Principle teaching that God ALWAYS (because his laws are unique, absolute, eternal and unchanging) creates in pairs. You remember, all that stuff about duality and such.
A point that always struck me as a bit OFF is that Moon taught that God did NOT create the angels in pairs – meaning that God broke one of his own “creation” laws, the law of positive/negative, masculine/feminine, of duality.
Moon taught that the Archangel Lucifer was lonely and so he was attracted to Eve because she was female.
So, God made a very big mistake when he failed to create the angels in pairs???? Are you really sure? Really sure….?
To me the whole story of the fall makes no sense at all.
A male angel is lonely because God went against his own principles of creation by not creating the angels in pairs? A male angel is so lonely he is attracted to a human female (imagine the reality of women back then, no soap, no shampoo, no combs, no clothes – and the beautiful angel of light, Lucifer, can’t keep his hands off her)? The male angel and the female human have sex? Really? Just how did they do that? And is sex still happening between angels and humans today? How frequently have angels had sex with humans throughout history? Was it just a thing between Lucifer and Eve?
And really, all of humankind suffers as a result of God’s mistake of going against his own principles of creation by not creating female angels for all those male angels? God was that stupid, thoughtless and cruel?
The story of the fall of man is lame from the gitgo. But when interpreted by Moon (or from whomever he stole the ideas) as a sexual fall involving blood lineages with a flesh and blood human female (angels have blood lineages?) due to the loneliness of the beautiful Archangel of light, Lucifer, it makes as much sense as all the false gods and mythological beasts and heroes the human race has ever invented, believed in or worshiped.
Why do people believe in Moon’s interpretation of the fall of man without thinking it through on a deeper level?

Rev Sun Myung Moon said: “There are no rights of ownership in the angelic world. If angels are masculine we would expect that God would create partners for angels and they would have descendants. However that is an enigma.”
Really? Moon is trying to pass off the idea of a “male only” angelic world as “an enigma”? Sounds more like he was trying to escape the fundamental ideas of his own doctrine of “duality” because he couldn’t explain why a God of “order, laws and principles” who is “absolute, unique, eternal and UNCHANGING” and whose laws and principles are also “absolute, unique, eternal and UNCHANGING” and who always “creates in pairs” chose to go against his own principles of duality when creating the angelic world.
Face it – Moon is guessing when it comes to the angelic world being made up of only male angels. That’s why he says it is an “enigma” to him, or in other words, a mystery.
Either the story of the “fall of man” is a myth or it is fact. If it is a myth then the whole story of the fall is no more important then the stories of Zeus, Hercules, Achilles, or Medusa, etc, etc, etc.
But if it is a fact, then God got it wrong by going against his own principles of creating everything in pairs or “the principles of duality”. Since I for one do not believe God got it wrong, and did not go against his own creation principles, then I think it is safe to say that “Moon got it wrong because he never knew the real God of heaven and earth. Moon has no idea where the concept of “male only angels” came from. And he couldn’t explain his struggle to make sense of the concept other then to call it an “enigma or mystery”.
But hey, let’s just go with the flow, say the story of the fall of man is a historical fact and then simply dodge any unwanted, messy questions like why God would create EVERYTHING in pairs EXCEPT FOR THE ANGELIC WORLD.
And again…why would an angel of light fall in love with a human female who lived before the age of cleanliness? And again, was that the only time an angel had sexual intercourse with a human being? How exactly did the angel of light have sexual intercourse with a human being? Did he use his “holy angelic light saber”. Saying that Lucifer was male and had sex with Eve implies that he had a penis. Why would God create male angels, made of light, and give them a penis if there were no female angels? What is the purpose and function of an angelic penis or “light saber”?
How did Eve have sex with Lucifer’s “light saber”? Could Lucifer stick his light saber anywhere in Eve? Or was it like the flesh and blood penis of a human male?
Come on man. You know you only believe in the story of the fall because you want to, and not because it makes any sense whatsoever.
The only thing of consequence concerning the fall of man story is how it was used as a means of guilt tripping everyone concerning sex and then controlling the guilty through their sex lives. You know what I’m getting at here…you can only have sex with the partner Moon “gave to you”. He was in total control.
The fall story was used by Moon to control our lives, our faith and our sacred honor. It was used to control the very core of humanity, which is our God given right to fall in love from our own free will.

Angels and the Fall
I would like to comment on Linda Feher’s article concerning the creation of angels and the fall of man.
First of all, some other spiritual teachings and traditions say that God created male AND female angels. One of the main teachings of the Jewish Kabbalah is about the tree of life and the 72 angels and archangels connected to this tree of life. It says that among these 72 angels, there are 40 male angels and 32 female angels! These angels are the leading angels, there are billions of others… Therefore how could Lucifer feel lonely? God knows what He is doing and He would never create anyone knowing that this being would feel lonely and jealous afterward!
I fully agree that Moon’s interpretation of the fall does not make sense!

Returning Good for Evil
Tumblr media
by Rev. Charles Simeon
"If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; for so you will heap coals of fire on his head, and Yahweh will reward you." - Proverbs 25:21-22
The morality both of the Old and New Testament is the same. Some have imagined that because our blessed Lord said "a new Commandment I give to you," he has in his Gospel enlarged the duties of his followers beyond what was required by the moral law. But no command of his was new in itself but only in its circumstances, as being enjoined from new principles and illustrated by new examples.
Morality does not depend on any arbitrary appointment. It arises out of the relation which we bear to God as our common Father and to each other as brethren. To love God with all our heart and mind and soul and strength, and our neighbor as ourselves, must of necessity be the duty of every child of man. Had our blessed Lord increased the demands of the moral law, then the Law must have demanded too little of us or the Gospel must have demanded too much. But neither of these is the case. The requirements both of the one and of the other are the same as far as morals are concerned. Love is acknowledged to be the fulfilling of the Law and the great commandment of the Gospel also.
From the words of our text we shall now be led to consider the duty inculcated therein.
By nature we all are inclined to render evil for evil. There is not a child who does not manifest this disposition as soon as it begins to act. Nor is there anyone whose own experience will not furnish him with unnumbered proofs that this is the natural bent of his own heart. Circumstances may indeed prevent us from retaliating injuries in an open way. The person who has inflicted the injuries may be out of our reach, or be too powerful for us to contend with, or be so low as to be deemed unworthy of our notice.
But in our hearts we shall find the vindictive principle strongly operative, disposing us to take pleasure in any evil that may have befallen our enemy, and to decline yielding to him any service which we might have rendered under the influence of a better principle. The man with the workings of hatred in his heart scarcely thinks of his enemy except with pain and a direct reference to the injuries received from him. And though from lack of opportunity he may not retaliate, he has in him the spark that might soon, by a concurrence of circumstances, break forth into a flame.
In proof of this we need only see how this spirit has operated in others, sometimes rankling for years till an opportunity was presented to gratify itself, and at other times bursting forth at once into furious resentment. Simeon and Levi, the sons of Jacob, were full of indignation against Shechem for defiling their sister Dinah. They formed a plan to murder not only Shechem but every male of the city in which he dwelt. To put them off their guard and disable them for resisting, they devised a scheme the most hypocritical and infernal that could enter the heart of man. And succeeding in this plan, they executed their bloody purpose without pity and remorse. Absalom's desire for revenge over the wrongs which his sister Tamar had sustained by Amnon rankled for two full years, till by artifice he was enabled to effect his murderous design. More rapid but not the less cruel was the vindictive wrath of David when Nabal had refused to recompense his services in the way he desired. David instantly hastened with armed forces to cut off Nabal and every male belonging to his numerous household. Alas, alas, what is man when left to the workings of his own corrupt nature! His every thought accords with that Pharisaic principle, "Thou shalt love thy friend and hate thine enemy."
But the word of God requires us to render good for evil. Every species of revenge is absolutely forbidden, even in thought. "If you meet your enemy's ox or his donkey going astray, you shall surely bring it back to him again. If you see the donkey of one who hates you lying under its burden, and you would refrain from helping it, you shall surely help him with it." Thus by the law of Moses the secret alienation of heart was to be counteracted by the exercise of actual kindness and benevolence.
But the words of our text are stronger still, and especially as they are cited by the Apostle Paul. The idea conveyed by him is that we must not merely give our enemy bread and water when he needs it, but must feed him with the tenderness of a mother towards her little infant. O what a victory does this suppose over all the vindictive feelings of our hearts!
We have a beautiful instance of this recorded in the history of Elisha. The prophet was surrounded by an army of Syrians determined to apprehend and destroy him. By a power communicated to him from above, he smote them all with blindness and then conducted them into the heart of Samaria. The king of Israel, now having gained this advantage over them, would have slain them. But the prophet said, "You shall not smite them, but shall set bread and water before them that they may eat and drink and go to their master."
Such is the disposition which we also are called to exercise towards our most inveterate enemies. We must "bless them who curse us, do good to them who hate us, and pray for them who despitefully use and persecute us."
Let us not be deterred by the arduousness of this duty but consider the encouragement given us to perform it. If we act in accordance with this kindness, we have reason to hope that we shall overcome the hatred of our enemy. Certain it is that no enemy was ever yet won by vindictive conduct. We may silence him by power, but we never can gain his affections by anything but love. And this will, if not always, yet sometimes prevail, as St. Paul intimates when he says, "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good." Indeed, where there is a spark of honor left, we cannot but hope that such benevolence as this will at last prevail.
It is well known that metals are fused by heaping coals of fire upon them and not by putting fire under them. And thus shall the hard hearts of our enemies be melted by accumulated instances of undeserved love. True, we cannot convert their souls by this, for nothing but omnipotence can effect so great a work as the conversion of a soul. But we may reasonably expect to appease their wrath, perhaps also to slay their enmity against us. And one such victory will be a rich recompense for all the forbearance we have ever exercised and all the love we have ever displayed.
It is also plainly asserted in our text that such conduct shall be rewarded by God. It will be rewarded here, in that it will bring unspeakable peace to the soul; for whenever love rises superior to resentment and enables us to render good for evil, we find comfort springing up in our hearts.
But the promise will be yet more fully accomplished hereafter. Every act of patient self-denial and generous love will be noticed by God with special approbation. If a cup of cold water given to a disciple for Christ's sake shall in no way lose its reward, much less shall services rendered to an enemy for his sake pass unnoticed.
Therefore, let us guard against a vindictive spirit. You will sometimes be inclined to think that the exercise of resentment is necessary, that some displeasure needs to be manifested or your enemies will be emboldened to take still further outrages. But look at the command of God, which is clearly on the side of forbearance and love, and say, "Get thee behind me, Satan; you are an offense to me."
And set the Lord Jesus Christ before you as your example. When you were his enemy, he left the bosom of his Father for you. Yea, "when you were yet enemies, he died for you." I need say no more. Set him before you and your way will be clear. If you look to him for all needful help, his "grace shall be sufficient for you," and you shall be able to do all things through the strength he will impart.

2 Samuel 18:1-19:10, John 20:1-31, Psalms 119:153-176, Proverbs 16:14-15
Today is the 1st day of June welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is great to be here with you today. So, yesterday we turned the knob and stepped into a shiny, sparkly new week and now we’re turning the knob and walking into a shiny, sparkly new month that is out in front of us waiting to be lived into, this 6th month of the year. So, by the time we finish this month we will have experienced quite a bit a transition we won’t be reading in the Gospels anymore. That's just…that’s just briefly in front of us. So, we will be moving into new territory in the Bible, but we will also be reaching the center point of the year as…as we end this month. So, wow! And if I'm counting right this is the 153rd day of the year if we’re counting for leap year this year. So, we’ve been at this a while day by day step-by-step, allowing God's word to continue to do what God's word does. Sort of just touches the places in our lives that need to be touched. It just continues to pull us forward. And, so, let's allow that flow. Let's be pulled forward by picking up where we left off yesterday. King David is on the run from his son Absalom who’s trying to take over the kingdom and…and…and in the process trying to do away with his father. So, some family drama to say the least is going on. Today second Samuel chapters 18 verse 1 through 19 verse 10. We’re reading from the God's word translation this week.
Commentary:
Okay. So, we've…we’ve kind of come to the end of this story where Absalom the son of King David is trying to take over the kingdom of his father because Absalom is dead. And, so…so, he won't be trying to take over the kingdom of his father anymore. And it's really interesting what we observe today. David has run from his own son, fled Jerusalem, the capital city, like fled from his son. His son has disgraced his father in a number of ways publicly and had the intention and sought the advice on how to kill his father. David, of course, does indeed know this story. It was his story when King Saul was pursuing him. So, he is stealthy, he does know what he's doing even though he's got a much larger and different kind of entourage and he's older. So, it works out that there's gonna be a battle and David tells his commanders to go kindly toward Absalom. In other words, try to spare Absalom. In the end though Absalom is killed in battle. And David comes apart at that point. Like he goes into complete grief. He just begins to disintegrate, which certainly causes dissonance, right? Because the armies of…who were loyal to the King, who have basically rescued and saved the king's life and his kingdom now feel bad for what they've done because the king is so distraught. And, so, they don't know how to feel, which is when Joab steps in is like basically, “if you do not go out to your men who have saved you they won't be here tomorrow you won’t have anybody left.” So, what kind of things happen in a person's life that can bring them to this kind of behavior? Like why is David so completely undone? Obviously, he's lost a child. He's lost his son. So, that is completely understandable, but like what is fueling this? Probably regret. Some of you…some of you kind of like know…you’ve been through this to some sort of degree. Others of you may not, but you can go through your life estranged from someone. I have seen this so many times in my life. An offense can happen in your life that estranges you. And it can be a serious offense that should estrange you, but it then goes on and on. Maybe it's between a…a child and a parent, or between siblings or between best of friends. Something happens, something happens that probably shouldn't have happened. It causes a rift, the rift grows into estrangement, separation. And then that can go on for decades until somebody dies. And then all the sudden the time lost, like it...it liquefies basically, and the loss becomes overwhelming because the realization that like, that…that the story is written and there's no modifications that can be done anymore. That reality creates its own kind of dissonance inside of us where we’re realizing and maybe even wishing that we had…that…that we had walked the path differently because we lost something and we didn’t realize how much it meant until it was gone. And, so, that's the kind of reaction that we sort of see in David's behavior. And it would make sense why because he had this son Absalom, a beautiful boy, beautiful young man, a very respectable, very good-looking person. But David kind of undermined himself in his own family by taking another man's wife and…and having that man killed. And then one of David's other sons rapes his daughter Tamar and David basically doesn't really step into that much. And, so, Absalom kills Amnon who raped his sister and he has to go on the run for his life. And he’s estranged with…from his father for years in Geshur. And then when he’s brought back to Jerusalem, he’s not allowed to see his father's face for a couple of years while living in Jerusalem. So, now Absalom's dead and David's realizing that, you know, he had a role to play in the animosity that happened between son and father. And maybe one of the things we can consider in the scene that has played out before us is whether or not it's worth it. I mean we can be right. We can be right for decades. We can be convinced. We can be cemented in for decades that we’re right but when that person that we have some kind of connection to that we’re holding an offense against for so…for a long period of time when they are not in the picture anymore, that disappears. It…it was vapor in the first place. Maybe it's better to say what you need to say now. Maybe it's better to do what you need to do now before the story comes to a conclusion.
Prayer:
Father, we invite You into our regrets. We don't like to often think about them. They usually have a lot of pain associated with them. And once You've kind of wrestled with regret, you come to a realization that You can't win really. And, so, you're gonna wrestle and wrestle and wrestle or you’re gonna decide to just move on because there's no other way. And maybe we've never really invited You into those things. And maybe we have a regrets in the making in our lives right now, things that are gonna really really hurt later because we so desperately needed to be right right now. And, so, we’re inviting You into this because we see a glimpse of it, we see a picture of it, we see hints of it coming out of the pages that we’re reading today. So, we invite You into these areas. Some of the stories can't be rewritten. They can't be modified. They are what they are, and we invite You into that and we release it to You and offer it to You and invite You to lead us on the path that is forward. In other cases, maybe things have just been festering and they've blown up and time has gone by and we’ve just let it go by. And not all these things are entangled with other people. Some of these things are just based on the decisions that we've made, some of the choices that we wish we hadn't made because we made them completely without You and now, we have the scars. We invite You into the places of regret Father and we open ourselves fully to You and we invite You fully into these experiences and we take comfort in knowing that we’re not carrying this alone. You are with us and You will never leave us. Come Holy Spirit into all of these matters that we’re talking about today. Permeate these things. Be in and among us as we consider. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Hello DAB my name is Perry Sky I’ve been listening to the broadcast for more than 12 years, but I’ve never called in. I want to wish everyone a happy Pentecost weekend. I’m praying for the power of the Holy Spirit to come upon us this weekend. I’m praying for the salvation of my husband’s soul and the restoration of my family. My family is very broken and has been for some time. My husband had…has issues that have caused alienation in my family and my children have abandoned us. My family is gone. I have no close friends and I have no support system and I’m disabled, and life has become hopeless, but I know that God is the restorer of families and He can restore mine too. So, I need prayer over restoration and hope and inspiration. Thank you for listening.
Hey DAB family this is Abby. I am just calling in tonight because I have just been following the news about the murder of George Floyd and I don’t know what to say. I…I…I don’t know if what I’m gonna say is the right thing to say. I just do know that as a white woman, I can’t keep quiet about this and I cannot just not say anything. I just want to say to all of my black brothers and sisters who are listening right now that I am so sorry that you have to endure the pain and the trauma and everything that you have to endure being a citizen in the United States and even across the world. I’m so ashamed. I’m so ashamed that, you know, if I’ve been part of the problem, I’m so ashamed of what people who look like me have done to you. I just wanted to put that out there and say that because I just…I don’t know what words to say but I’m just so sorry and I love you and I recognize my privilege and I’m doing everything I can to educate myself and to learn to do better and I promise you that I will raise kids who will do better and I just want you to know that I love you and I’m sorry.
Hello, I would like to pray for the lady that called in on April 8th who suffers satanic abuse. Father God please heal my sister in Christ. Minister to her heart in a deep and personal way so that through the word of God she may learn how to be truly intimate so that she may experience healthy relationships. Bring Christian warriors in her life who understand what she’s going through and can walk through the spiritual battlefield alongside her. Break any strongholds. I also pray that this satanic abuse is brought into the light. So many people don’t acknowledge that it exists or turn a blind eye to it and I just pray that we all just wake up and see that this does go on. It went on before and it goes on still now. If we say nothing, do nothing we’re complicit. So, I just pray that we have open…we have eyes to see and ears to hear not only the good that’s going on but also, I just pray that we’re equipped to handle satanic attacks and help our fellow brothers and sisters. Amen.
Good morning family this is Soaring on Eagles Wings from Canada and I’m calling in to lift up a few people to you. Terry from Australia was so transparent about his addiction with pornography. He doesn’t want to be in that space anymore and he’s tried all that he can try with no success. So, Father God I’m asking You now to take over and intervene in his life and remove this…this bondage that’s upon him Lord God. Help him to be the overcomer that You have created him to be. Let truth be poured into his life Father God and send him all the tools that he needs spiritually and in every other way to deliver him from this. Terry we are standing with You and we’re supporting You as You continue to fight the good fight. Shannon from Texas. You had a job offer, You moved, now Your job has been rescinded. What is she to do Father, God? She needs direction and she needs help. So, I’m asking You to guide her steps and show her the path that she should go. May she walk in Your footsteps Lord as You lead her to the right job in the right direction and I thank You. And I continue to lift up my friend Susan whose son has stage IV cancer. And now somebody else in her life as cancer. It’s been such a difficult time for her lately. So, precious Jesus, shine Your light into her life. Lift her up. Plant her feet on solid ground. When she gets anxious or fearful, remind her Lord God of what You have done and what You will continue to be. Surround her and her son in her family in the name of Jesus I pray…
