once again thinking about postwar dogs so i'm just gonna yell for a minute

so in general, i feel like there'd be a shift back towards more primitive/ancient breed types: pariah dogs, sighthounds, spitz breeds, etc. obviously these would move back into being landraces rather than isolated pure breeds, but i'm listing off the specific breeds that i have in mind for visual/type references. these breeds are known to be independent and work alongside their people rather than for their people like modern breeds do. they're suited for a nomadic lifestyle and, given that this is in a postapocalyptic setting where many people do have more of a nomadic lifestyle, it just makes sense that these breeds would hang around

sighthounds would be so useful to have as a wastelander, especially the larger breeds/mixes that can handle larger prey and work as guardians. i'm looking at wolfhounds, deerhounds, staghounds, lurchers, ridgebacks, azawakhs, mixes of all of these, etc etc- you get my vision. the big longdogs that can handle deer, elk, wolves, etc.

kind of thinking about postwar coursing. that could be an interesting area to get into, especially in the midwest + southwest regions that are more suited for sprinting

i'm also thinking about game dogs: bull breeds/mixes like bulldogs, bull herders, bull lurchers, bandogs, etc would be a very useful companion animal to have around, both for protection and hunting. honestly i can't think of a better type of dog to be traveling a wasteland with- sure something like an akita would be great too, but a little 50lb fur missile with that kind of fight drive? yeah, you're set. these dogs are already used for feral hog hunting nowadays and i can't imagine a bit of radiation is going to change much.

🪴🕷️🪶🦘Sniper🪶🦘🕷️🪴--- Australian Staghound AKA Kangaroo Dog

The Australian Staghound is not recognized as a breed, but is a type of sighthound that is used to pursue (course) a variety of quarry (game). Although it is not recognized as a breed, some "lines" have been bred together longer than some recognized modern breeds. The best way to visualize the Australian Staghound is to blend together the characteristics of the Scottish Deerhound with the Greyhound. This is a running dog with the physical characteristics that would be referred to as the Greyhound prototype. It has long legs, a deep chest, and strong muscles. The Staghound has great visual acuity, and some have been bred for some scenting ability while on course. 

Staghounds are very fast but are not hyperactive. To some people, the Staghound even appears to be a bit lazy around the home once mature. The coursing instinct in the American Staghound is unsurpassed, so anything that runs may be considered quarry. Males stand at a maximum of 32 inches at the shoulder.

🎞️🌀🦎🕴🏾Spy🕴🏾🦎🌀🎞️ --- Beauceron

These dogs are muscular, rugged, and large, standing as high as 27.5 inches at the shoulder, yet graceful and in all ways balanced. The Beauceron is imposing and powerful, but also remarkably smart, spirited, and a versatile herder. Their dark black coats feature handsome squirrel-red accents, including the red feet that give the breed its French nickname Bas-Rouge ('red stockings').

The long head is well chiseled, and the dark brown eyes project expression breed fanciers describe as frank and confident. They're not for novice owners, who might end up being owned by their dominant dog instead of the other way around. That said, well-trained and socialized Beaucerons are levelheaded watchdogs and guardians, especially good with the young, the small, and the defenseless. The Giant Schnauzer is a large and extremely intelligent dog of German decent. They are territorial, yet good with people. The males stand at a minimum of 25.5 inches at the shoulder, and are expected to be a larger and more powerful version of the Standard Schnauzer. For some reason, there was not much information on these dogs.

Wolfhounds are sweet, loyal dogs. They love to be around their family and enjoy plenty of affection. Because of their strong prey drive, only let them off-leash in a securely fenced-in area.

Otherwise, they may take off after something and get into a dangerous situation. The defining characteristic of the Irish wolfhound is its imposing height, as it is the tallest breed of dog. But a good wolfhound is more than just a tall dog. It is a sturdy, yet swift dog, capable of running down and killing large animals. It has a general greyhound build, only larger and stockier.

The legs are long, the body comparatively narrow, the loin slightly arched, the chest deep and the waist moderately small. Like most sighthounds, the tail is long and carried low. These dogs can run at 30 to 40 miles per hour and they are definitely not snap-to-it obedience prospects. 

🪵♟️🔫🪨Heavy🪨🔫♟️🪵 --- Caucasian Shepherd Dog

The Caucasian Shepherd dog is a serious guardian breed and should never be taken lightly.

The Russian Caucasian is bold, fearless, self-confident, and fierce when a threat is present, but he is soft, devoted, kind, and endearing to his family, including other family pets.

The Caucasian Shepherd dog is known for its strong protective instincts and intelligence. They are independent and can be highly intelligent, but they also have a strong will and may require consistent and patient training.

This Scottish breed is reported to be gentle and is tireless when following a scent. Because of its strong tracking instinct, it can be willful and somewhat difficult to obedience train and handle on a leash. Bloodhounds are known to have an affectionate and even-tempered nature to humans, with them considered to be excellent family pets.

Like Bull Terriers, Miniature Bull Terriers are loving and, like many terrier breeds, they can be stubborn at times; but despite this they make great dogs for people with limited space.

Miniature Bull Terriers are known to be stubborn and courageous. Despite their diminutive stature, they will readily challenge larger dogs. However, as with any dog, owners can reduce the likelihood of confrontations by providing appropriate training. They are very energetic and playful and love people, but care must be taken as they are variable around other dogs.

Miniature Bull Terriers require little grooming. A quick brushing once a day or a few times a week is sufficient. Sunscreen must be used on any sparse white sections of fur around the face, ears, hindquarters or stomach when outdoors (especially in summer between the hours of 10am and 2pm) to avoid sunburn and cancer.

Smart, trainable, and of noble bearing, the assertive and confident Cane Corso is a peerless protector. The Corso's lineage goes back to ancient Roman times, and the breed's name roughly translates from the Latin as 'bodyguard dog.'

At nearly 28 inches at the shoulder and often weighing more than 100 pounds, with a large head, alert expression, and muscles rippling beneath their short, stiff coat, Corsi are at a glance intimidating creatures. Their imposing appearance is their first line of defense against intruders. As one writer put it, 'An understated air of cool competence, the kind of demeanor you'd expect from a professional bodyguard, is the breed's trademark.'     

Corsi are intelligent, loyal, eager to please, versatile, and intensely loyal to their humans, but are also assertive and willful, and can end up owning an unwitting owner. As with any other big guardian dog, responsible breeding and early socialization with people and other dogs is vital.

This show-stopping pup is an ancient breed, with origins dating back to over 3000 years ago.

Norman, his scruffy staghound, rises from his bed and places his front paws on Izzy’s shoulders, pressing his whole, solid body into Izzy’s torso and thighs, gently nudging the cross tattoo high on Izzy’s cheekbone with his wet nose.

Izzy sighs deeply and presses his forehead into Norman’s fuzzy shoulder.

“Cheers, mate. Good boy, good pressure. Alright, I’m okay now. Shh. Norm, release.”

Norman presses one last boop to Izzy’s face and flops down from his position to rest his big head across Izzy’s thighs, and sighs dramatically, as one tattooed hand reaches down to gently scratch behind his rose-shape ears.

From its position face down on the floor next to the filing cabinet, the phone begins to ring again.

The Sculptress and the Empress: Harriet Hosmer and Elisabeth of Austria

Some months ago I wrote a post about the friendship (and maybe even more) between Queen Marie Sophie of the Two Sicilies and sculptor Harriet Hosmer. Back then I had promised a second part about another of the royal acquaintances of Harriet: Elisabeth of Austria. Better late than never, here it is!

Harriet met Elisabeth during the later’s stay at Rome during December 1869. The Empress of Austria had gone to accompany her sister Marie at her confinement, despite not being the most prudent move given that relations between Austria and the Kingdom of Italy were still tense. But Elisabeth went anyway, straight from Trieste to Rome by sea (and thus discretely snubbing the King of Italy). In Harriet’s published correspondence we find a first mention of the empress in a later to her friend Wayman Crow dated February 1870:

The Queen of Naples (“the lovely Queen,” as Mr. Longfellow calls her) is looking uncommonly handsome. She sent for me last Sunday to show me her new horse, a present from her sister (the Empress of Austria whose own pet saddle horse it was), and really it is the most beautiful thing I ever saw on four legs...

Elisabeth visited Harriet at her studio. Harriet said of her that:

The fame of her beauty was European, and when I saw her I felt that this fame had not been exaggerated. One day, being in the Queen [Marie Sophie]'s boudoir with these two distinguished ladies, who were looking particularly picturesque, I thought mortal eye had never witnessed a fairer duet of loveliness, for the Queen was as beautiful as the Empress, both possessing that nameless grace which we all recognize and which no one can describe, an air of highest distinction. One charm of the Empress was her beautiful voice, sounding like a sweet silver bell...

One of the prettiest stories I ever heard of her was connected with a visit to a certain insane asylum. Her Majesty was shown through various wards, but one door was closed. Upon asking why she was not allowed to enter the ward, one of her ladies in waiting explained that there was a patient inside who fancied she was the Empress of Austria. “Oh, I understand,” said the Empress, “Pray let me see her”; and, on being admitted, humored the poor woman's fancy, and treated her with all the consideration due herself.

According to the editor of Harriet's correspondance, Cornelia Carr, she had “a beautiful photograph of the Empress with one of her great staghounds lying at her feet, and still another photograph which she gave her of herself and a favorite horse”. The photography with the staghound is likely this one:

Harriet even made a sculpture of the dog; sadly I'm not aware of where this statue is now:

There are many images of Elisabeth riding, so I'm not sure which one Harriet had. But the next scene involving said photograph is narrated by Harriet's editor:

“What do you think of that photograph?” said she.

“This photograph does not do your Majesty justice,” Miss Hosmer replied.

“Oh,” said the Empress, for her modesty was as great as her beauty, “don't look at me, look at the horse. ”

Which sounds very in character for the empress.

Elisabeth promised Harriet that “If you come to Vienna, I will show you my horses and my dogs and all my pretty things.” But Harriet never went to Vienna, and she and Elisabeth never saw each other again.

Cuban Army 1st Guards Armored Division (Central Army)

Nicknamed the "Sanguily Rescue Division" - it was created in 1965 as a corps level formation of 3 armored and 2 infantry regiments and later became an armored division. Its oldest unit is the 2600th Armored Brigade - the former 26 July 1st Motorized Infantry Regiment that fought in the Bay of Pigs landing operation of 1961 - and was raised as an armored battalion equipped with Western systems in 1959. It is the armored fist of the Cuban Army today and is stationed as part of the Central Army.

IMU that brigade is restored to its original name as this division - one of a few designated Guards (Division Blindada de la Guardia) for its role in the Cuban supported operations in Africa and Grenada in the Cold War - is by now being reequipped shedding its old equipment for modern systems. For example its armored battalions are now equipped with Russian T-72s and T-62s as well as Chinese Type 15s and Iranian Tosans, as well as the Type 11 assault gun platform in two of the brigades. Infantry battalions are equipped with the BTR-70 and the Type 8 wheeled IFVs, the BMP-2 and VN11 tracked IFVs and the Type 90 APC. The 90th Mechanized Infantry operates both the BTR-70 and Tiuna in its motorized battalion. The historical companies under the depot regiment use majority of the early systems the division uses for historical and parade purposes as well as for educational tools given the division's role in Cuban military history. These include:

It also has an armored cavalry regiment organized with Venezuelan assistance, which is patterned after the armored brigades and organized similarly but with a purpose of both armored recon and offensive operations in support of armor and infantry elements. Also IMU the placement of such regiments in divisional level by the FARC is to also ensure continuity of traditions of the Cuban "caballeria Mambisa" of the War of Independence and the Spanish American War.

Brigade artillery regiments are equipped with Chinese PLL-01 towed howitzers, the Type 7 SPG and the Fajr-3 MLRS from Iran. The cavalry regiment's artillery group is a mixed of tracked and wheeled self-propelled gun systems. DIVARTY on the other hand alongside all these uses M-46 howitzers, BM-21 Grads, Fajr-5s, CJ-10 and Soumar cruise missiles in the land attack role, and Hwasongpho-11b and Zelzar-3 TBMs.

Divisional air defense is organized into the brigade level regiments armed with Strela-10s and SPAGGs of the ZSU series and the BTR-60 organized into two battalions each and the divisional air defense regiment organized into groups of towed and self-propelled guns and missile systems armed with the following:

ZU-23, PG-99 and S-60 towed air defense guns

ZSU-57-2s, PGL-12 and T-57 Duplex SPAGGS

This division is the only one with brigade level and divisional regiments of air defense in the Cuban Army as the rest of the divisions have air defense groups of battalion size in the brigade level with more assets either in regimental or brigade level under divisional command.

Local systems like the BTR-100 and the David and the Jupiter D-30 mobile wheeled SPG, as well as the Venezuelan Tiuna, are present to give an Latin American look to the division as well as to provide a showcase of the Cuban military industry.

The reason IMU there's a political affairs unit is because of the strong Soviet influence in the Cuban Army and to ensure control by the Communist Party over the armed forces. However, it maintains a more recent creation of a chaplaincy unit to ensure religious care among the mostly Christian service personnel of the division.

The division's CIMIC battalion and SAR elements of the engineer regiment provide aid to civil autorities capability during war and peacetime calamities, joined by elements of the division's Youth Labor Army battalion placed under its combat service support regiment.

IMU this and other divisions are reinforced in wartime by elements of the Territorial Troops, the Civil Defense of Cuba and the National Reserves, which would form a 2nd infantry brigade from elements of these organizations in the division's AOR.
