GotG Vol. 3 spoilers, be aware!

First things first, I'm so surprised that Yondu appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 despite Rooker always denying that it could ever happen! Okay, he had like 10 seconds of screen time but he was there regardless 🥺

Rocket's early experiences, however, really hurt my soul as did his loneliness + experience of being an outsider, and the fact that he almost died! I mean, the feeling of not belonging is really painful, I can tell that from my own experience, and I don’t want to see anyone else feeling the same way. It simply sucks

About Rocket’s surviving, I was genuinely afraid, during several scenes in fact, that he wouldn’t make it although rationally thinking it would have been an idiotic plot twist to kill him and I knew that. Also Rocket wasn't the only one I was afraid was going to lose their life; both Drax and Star Lord ended up in a situation where I really thought that it was over for them (thank God I was wrong with that feeling)

Oh, and Rocket with the baby raccoons was so so so cute!

Talking about Drax though, I have always seen him as a dad as well as a destroyer. I mean, he told he had wife and a kid and it was obvious to me, based on the way he talked about his daughter, that he must be good with kids. Also, one can enjoy killing and still be a good dad, right?

Aaand I didn't even bother to count how many times I cried during the damn movie but I still liked it; it was better than the second one yet it didn’t reach the level of the first one (which I didn’t even expect to happen). My mom liked it too though she was a bit skeptical about it at first. There is one thing I'm disappointed about though: the soundtrack! There was like only one song I liked and in general they didn't come anywhere near the quality of the ones in the first or even the second movie

A question for you because you seem like one of those people who has watched everything: how did you get started watching bl, and what are your ultimate favorite shows?

Double-barrelled! I'm honoured.

How did I get into BL?

The short answer is that ~2016 the YouTube algorithm served me up Lovesick and I immediately went EXCUSE ME WHAT IS THIS and looked up everything else available and watched literally everything I could get my hands on (which at the time was easy because there was only a handful compared to today, but it still felt like a wealth of content to enjoy).

The longer answer is that I used to be really involved in GL (I was the secretary at the first Yuricon in North America in 2002 or 2003) and then BL manga fandom (was in a scanlation group for awhile) through ~2006? so its extra hilarious that this wasn't my route in; I apparently took a break right before they started making live action versions in Japan. But when I got into Thai BL it was fun rediscovering these tropes in a new medium and through the lens of a new-to-me culture, noticing how they differed and how the genre had matured (and how it hadn't), and on catching up on the stuff out of Japan, seeing some of the manga I read over a decade ago come to life! So I mention this history because it's definitely a part of why I stayed (and probably why the algorithm found me relatively quickly).

I only started tracking things in a spreadsheet in 2020 (and it's not nearly as comprehensive or useful as @absolutebl 's), but I did try to backfill the highlights of what I've seen and I have over 550 rows on there, fwiw. I'm a completionist so I do try to watch everything, though that's getting more and more impossible these days.

This question is so hard. ‘The Life Of Chuck’: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan & Jacob Tremblay Join Stephen King Adaptation From Mike Flanagan And Trevor Macy’s Intrepid Pictures

Chiwetel Ejiofor (Rob Peace), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) and Jacob Tremblay (The Toxic Avenger) have joined the cast of The Life of Chuck, the latest of many Stephen King adaptations from filmmaker Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep), which kicked off production in Alabama under an interim agreement earlier this month. Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill lead the ensemble of the pic, written and directed by Flanagan, as we were first to tell you.

Also now involved is QWGmire, the production and financing entity known for the indie horror Agnes and the forthcoming Lovely, Dark and Deep, which has made a major equity investment in the independently financed feature.

Stated QWGmire partners Molly C. Quinn, Matthew M. Welty and Elan Gale, “We are thrilled to partner with Mike and Trevor [Macy] on this project. Mike is a master storyteller and we can’t wait to bring his inspirational adaptation of Stephen King’s short story to audiences.”

Based on three interconnected stories from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds, The Life of Chuck examines the existence of its subject Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death aged 39 from a brain tumor and ending with his childhood in a house believed to be haunted. Flanagan is set to produce the feature adaptation alongside his long-time Intrepid Pictures partner, Macy. WME Independent is repping domestic sales, with FilmNation Entertainment overseeing the international front.

Best known for his Academy Award-nominated role in 12 Years a Slave, Ejiofor’s recent credits include the Showtime sci-fi drama series The Man Who Fell to Earth, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and the Sundance-opening sci-fi rom-com The Pod Generation with Emilia Clarke. Starring alongside Camila Cabello, Michael Kelly and more in Rob Peace, his sophomore feature on the heels of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, he’ll also soon be seen in Netflix’s The Old Guard 2 and a Venom threequel from Sony.

Gillan over the summer closed out her run as Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Nebula in the James Gunn-helmed Vol. 3, which grossed over $845M worldwide. Other recent credits for the actress include The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Thor: Love and Thunder and the Mali Elfman-helmed indie genre-bender Next Exit. She’ll next be seen in the Lisa Steen comedy Late Bloomers, which world premiered at SXSW earlier this year, and also stars up opposite Russell Crowe in the forthcoming crime thriller Sleeping Dogs.

Sure thing. There are a few, not many. Countries with conscription policies (e.g. Korea & Thailand) usually have a defacto ban on realistic/non-positive representation of military service in their media. In other words, BL by its nature (gay in military) stays away from this setting.

BLs in uniform (featuring military/policemen/fire fighter romances)

A Tale of Thousand Stars Thai 2021 YouTube (ranger) - With great casting and cinematography this drama nods at BL tropes but manages to elevate them (and itself) with a strong mature story concept about a spoiled rich kid who gets a heart transplant and becomes a teacher it order to pay out survivor’s guilt. On the way he falls in love with a local park ranger and contends with his own classism and escapist tendencies. Everyone seemed to perfectly suit their roles and GMMTV made the most out of its stable. Combined with excellent production (and post production) values, 1000 Stars is without question GMMTV’s most mature, charming, and smart BL series. I think it should go down as one of the top BLs of all time. I feel safe recommending this one to friends and non BL watchers. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

HIStory 3: Trapped Taiwan 2019 Viki (cop) - Basically the definition of enemies to lovers from Lin Pei Yu. This is a cop + the mafia man he is chasing but WAIT, they fall in love. Added bonus side couple: assassin and nerd cop ALSO falling in love. It’s great. All the leads are stellar. Its high heat, fun action, and a bit of a mystery drama but pretty about all of it. My only warning is that the main couple doesn’t entirely end up together, it’s implied, but… amorphous ending. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Your Name Engraved Herein Taiwan 2020 Netflix? (army, recent history) - This movie is fantastic but it is also seriously depressing, it’s a self acceptance journey, but if you wanna wallow in high quality acting and serious gay drama, this’ll do it. MIXED REC, NOT FOR SPECIFICALLY BL FANS

S.C.I. AKA SCI Mysteries China/Hong Kong 2018 YouTube? (censored bromance, cops) - This is a police procedural with a censored main couple of police investigators who live together basically as husbands, it’s just not talked about. This is one of the first BLs I ever saw (I found their relationship very confusing). RECOMMENDED

Guardian China 2018 grey (censored bromance, cop) - Episodic urban fantasy meets police procedural, one of the most epic long term pinings in the history of long term pinings. RECOMMENDED

Light Taiwan 2021 Gaga (cop) - Ironically titled movie about a street hustler (incest, rape, abuse survivor - all depicted on screen) who falls in (and in love with) an undercover cop. TRIGGERS

Shorts & Sides

A First Love Story Korea 2021 YouTube & Gaga (military service) - Strongberry are true masters of their craft and yet A First Love Story is still one of the best things they have ever produced. It’s the only microfilm ever to make one of my year end top ten list. It’s two episodes of about 8 minutes each that manage to perfectly portray the sweetest friends-to-lovers confession ever. It’s joyful, and gentle with its characters, and a little hot. How on earth do they manage to leave us yearning for more yet completely satisfied at the same time? It’s like the perfect amuse-bouche, that one finger food at that one cocktail party that you will never forget. You are a ridiculous human if you haven’t spent 16 minutes with these two boys. Go watch it now. Or go watch it again. It’s time VERY well spent. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Just Friends? Korea 2009 Gaga (military service) - Boyfriends, one of whom is on military leave, trying to decide on coming out and the future. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

(also one of Korea's first BLs, they would NOT stick to this style, it's way more Taiwan feeling.)

The Immeasurable Taiwan 2021 Gaga (cop) - Police officer falls in love with a student who turns out to be an anti-establishment activist. MIXED REC

I've left out the super dark, unhappy, violent, rapey, and pinks, because... I don't like 'em, and you asked me... so...

Now you know why the BL adaptation I want more than ANYTHING is Decedents of the Sun, soldier+healer but GAY? Come on, it writes itself!
