Created by Steve Ditko, the Question first appeared in Blue Beetle #1, published by Charlton Comics in April 1967. Vic Sage was introduced in an eight-page back-up that would continue to appear in Blue Beetle for only a handful of issues, as the company stopped publishing their superhero line soon thereafter.
DC would buy the rights to the Charlton characters in the early 1980s, and the Question returned to comics in Crisis on Infinite Earths and then his own ongoing title in 1987.

Four Ditko covers from Charlton's UNUSUAL TALES. 1957-1959.
Excellent examples of Ditko's singular early approach to monsters, his ability to create a unique and atmospheric street scene, and his odd but darkly effective character designs. One wonders what Ditko thought (if he ever saw it) about the published version of the last cover, his bizarre and frightening sidewalk monster all but obscured by a giant, ugly promo blast advertising 8000 PRIZES.

You can tell this is libertarian Ditko-era Spider-Man because that's not how tax brackets work
