I Know What You Did Last Summer has enough going for it to be watchable: an attractive cast, a handsome setting in a North Carolina fishing town (sweetened by coastal shots from California), and a solid horror story premise. Four teens, just graduated from high school and looking forward to life as young adults, accidentally hit a pedestrian on a lonely back road and decide to cover up the death and swear to secrecy. (It’s not a novel setup: See Paul Lynch’s 1980 Prom Night for an analogous one.) But they are haunted by guilt. Top student Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) almost flunks out of college. Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar), the beauty queen who dreams of stardom, fails to make it in New York and comes home to work in the family department store. The jock, Barry (Ryan Phillippe), doesn’t make it big in college athletics. The poor boy, Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.), is stuck in the family fishing business. And then, on the anniversary of the accident, which just happens to be the Fourth of July, each of them starts getting warnings that someone knows their guilty secret. So far, so good, as suspense setups go. Unfortunately, the screenplay starts getting ragged as soon as the implied threat manifests itself, and the rest, as the body count rises, is a tangle of improbabilities and loose ends. By the ending, which is a clear setup for a sequel, I wasn’t entirely certain who the killer was or even why they did it. It’s a movie full of things you’re not supposed to think about, like how Barry covered up the damage to his car after the accident, or how the killer can make bodies disappear so quickly after they’re first discovered. Unfortunately, the screenplay doesn’t have enough wit to get your attention away from these questions.

I Know What You Did Last Summer will be released on 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray and Digital) on September 27 via Sony. Loosely based on Lois Duncan's 1973 novel, the 1997 slasher is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Jim Gillespie (D-Tox) directs from a script by Kevin Williamson (Scream). Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Freddie Prinze Jr. star with Johnny Galecki, Bridgette Wilson, Anne Heche, and Muse Watson.

TRAMA

Dopo essere riusciti a uscire dal vagone, la comitiva improvvisata si ritroverà bloccata in una serie di stanze e step dopo step perderà un membro del gruppo nel tentativo di trovare la vita d'uscita e salvare la pelle. Per superare le insidie delle stanze ideate dalla Minos Escape Rooms Corporation, il gruppo dovrà fare gioco di squadra e per vincere dovranno scoprire cosa li accomuna perché proprio loro sono stati scelti per questa partita, ed è così che i sei scaveranno nel loro passato per rivelare che ognuno di loro ha partecipato a questo gioco.

Edit action scenes is not an easy task. There are so many factors that make possible to have a successful action scene. Among those factors is how the scene was filmed and the performance of the actors.

In the film, Big Trouble in Little China editors Steve Mirkovich Mark Warner Edward A. Warschilka worked together to present John Carpenter vision to life making sure the movie has an effective mood and the story is clear and convincing.

At the beginning of the movie Truck driver, Jack Burton accompany friend Wang Chi to the airport to pick up his girlfriend Miao Yin, the girl is kidnapped by  A Chinese street gang, the Lords of Death. During the car chase, Jack and Chi try to ambush the car quickly approaching to them, really close to jit them. The scene builds in literally 5 seconds with fast cuts and an effective POV shot of the street gang car. The trick here is pacing, capturing the right shots and the best angles.

Scream Factory has revealed the special features for its Valentine Collector’s Edition Blu-ray release, which streets on February 12. Devon Whitehead designed the new cover art; the original poster will be on the reverse side.

Alors qu’ils font connaissance en échangeant des banalités, l’un des membres du groupe découvre qu’ils sont désormais enfermés. Un dispositif de chauffage surpuissant se met alors en route. La partie vient de commencer….

Le concept du “jeu” où l’on se retrouve enfermé avec pour obligation de trouver des réponses, ici sous forme d’énigmes, pour se libérer et ainsi accéder à la pièce suivante, n’est pas nouveau. Dernièrement, “Panic Button” (2011) de Chris Crow, allait déjà dans ce sens, mais on peut cependant remonter jusqu’à “Cube” (1997) de Vincenzo Natali, en passant par la série de films Saw. Dans le cas présent, les protagonistes qui évoluent dans cet “Escape Game” ont tous un point en commun, qui sera révélé dans la dernière pièce du jeu, et qui explique le pourquoi de leur présence dans le jeu. Ou plus précisément le pourquoi de leur sélection.

L’aspect horrifique est construit autour du fait que chaque pièce revêt un caractère mortel, et que quiconque ne serait pas sorti de la dite pièce dans le temps imparti en mourrait immédiatement. On se retrouve donc dans le concept du survival, et hormis la première pièce, où tous les protagonistes s’en sortent indemnes, chaque pièce suivante réduira le nombre de participants. Le point fort du métrage, c’est que d’une part, il évite de basculer dans l’hyper-gore, et que d’autre part, on retrouve une très bonne originalité dans le concept des pièces piégées. Certes, la mort est au rendez-vous, mais finalement aucune scène ne force à détourner le regard. Cela reste donc très “soft”…

Le scénario concocté par le duo composé de Bragi F. Schut et de Maria Melnik, nous confronte au sempiternel thème de la confrontation entre les protagonistes qui se déchirent sur la marche à suivre et sur l’identification des indices et de leurs interprétations. Bien qu’une scène d’ouverture nous permet de faire un petit peu connaissance avec les différents personnages, leur développement est nettement trop faible pour que l’on puisse réellement éprouver de l’empathie pour eux, à l’exception faite de l’étudiante, incarnée avec une certaine justesse et subtilité par Taylor Russell.

Marc Spicer, le directeur de la photographie, s’est fait plaisir en créant des pièces aux univers radicalement différents d’où on est bien incapable d’anticiper d’où viendra le danger. La fin est d’ailleurs à double niveau, et peu être vu comme un prologue à une suite possible. L’édition signée par Steve Mirkovich permet d’obtenir une centaine de minutes de film suffisamment captivantes pour ne pas s’ennuyer. La bande originale orchestrée par Brian Tyler et John Carey est plutôt discrète et classique.

En date du 21 avril 2019, “Escape Room” avait rapporté 57 millions de dollars aux États-Unis et au Canada, et 97,9 millions de dollars dans les autres pays, pour une recette mondiale de 154,9 millions de dollars, contre un budget de 9 millions de dollars. Le 25 février 2019, une suite a été annoncée comme étant en développement actif. Adam Robitel devrait à nouveau en être le metteur en scène sur un scénario de Bragi F. Schut et une production de Neal H. Moritz. La sortie de cette suite est programmée pour le 17 avril 2020.

En conclusion, “Escape Room” est un survival satisfaisant doté d’une histoire familière, d’une intrigue bien construite, mais classique et d’un développement original. Le rythme est cohérent et plutôt soutenu, le récit est fluide et la narration fait appel à quelques flashbacks. Le développement des personnages est un peu réduit, mais la distribution offre d’honorables prestations. La photographie est originale avec une belle diversité de thèmes, l’édition est correcte et la bande originale est trop basique. L’ensemble reste attrayant et offre un divertissement convenable.

    ESCAPE GAME (2019) ★★★☆☆ Six personnes n’ayant rien en commun se retrouvent enfermés dans un jeu et devront trouver les indices ou mourir.
