Unbreakable
Pairing: reader x OMC, Steve Rogers x Reader (eventually)
Word count: 3.3k
Warning: domestic abuse, sexual assault, attempted rape, attempted murder, oral (m receiving), cheating, blood, I think that’s everything but if I forgot something please let me know!
A/N: so I got this idea after reading a fic where reader loses someone they love during the blip and then they meet Steve and then after the snap the person comes back and it’s awkward because what are you supposed to do? This fic however will deal with reader having someone abusive in their life that gets dusted. How will reader deal with this new found opportunity especially once they meet Steve? Chapter one is really the only one that will have violence in it toward reader, of course it will be mentioned later on but that will have its own warnings. Also this is going to be the slowest of burns!

There were rules you had to follow and you broke one of the most important ones. You were late. Your boyfriend David didn’t like it when you were late, even if you had a legitimate reason for it or that it was only by a few minutes. Still you ran from the subway station all the way to the apartment you shared with him, in hopes that he wouldn’t be too angry. It takes you a few extra seconds to get your door open because your hands are shaking so bad.
The tv is off and so are the lights and you breathe a sigh of relief, David wasn’t home. You walk into your room and drop your bag in its designated corner before went into the kitchen to get water. You recoil instinctively when you see David leaning against the doorframe. Even with a tall slender figure he could be imposing when he wanted. His eyes were a very dark brown and when he got very angry they were almost black. David kept his hair in a short style after you grabbed it as you tried to defend yourself. He was stronger than he looked, the proof was in the multiple concussions and broken bones you’d received from him.
“Hi David, I didn’t see you when I came in.” You say with a wobbly voice. The look in his eye lets you know he’s going to punish you.
“You’re late. What have I told you about being late?”
“You don’t like it.” You tried not to show him fear, he loved that.
“Yet here you are,” he looks down at his watch. “Three minutes late. So who was he? Who were you fucking?” He takes a few short steps until he’s towering over you.
“I promise I wasn’t with any other man. The train was late.”
“LYING WHORE.” He screams in your face and you flinch. “TELL ME HIS NAME.”
You know the answer is going to bring on the pain but there is no one who you could name. There was no one that you would wish this on. “I wasn’t with any other man.”
David’s fist connects with your jaw. He doesn’t stop even when you cry and beg. There’s blood running down your face but you’re not sure where it’s coming from and still David continues to attack you. He kicks your stomach and pulls you by your hair only to slap you around.
Then everything starts going dark and you take a small breath of relief, maybe this time you won’t wake up.
Tumblr media
You slowly regained your consciousness a few hours later. The room was dark which most likely meant it was the middle of the night. You groaned in pain as you slowly got up from the bedroom floor where David had left you. He laid in bed, asleep and snoring as if he hadn’t just used you as his own punching bag.
As silently as you can, you grab a change of clothes and head into the bathroom. Other than the front door, the bathroom was the only other room that had a lock on it. The soft click of the lock gave you a sliver of peace. You grimaced when you looked in the mirror. There was a cut just beside your right eyebrow and your lip was busted. The area around your left eye and cheek were swollen and tender. You got in the shower. As the warm water soothed your aching body, you cried as you questioned what you had done to deserve the way you were treated.
There was nothing you wanted more than to be free from David’s hold. He terrified you. Going to the police wasn’t an option. Once your neighbors called the cops but David was able to convince them that nothing was going on. Even when he had some of your blood on his shirt. Your family was no better, they didn’t care for you so asking them for help would only bring you more humiliation.
You dry yourself off and get redressed. Instead of heading back to the bedroom you lay down on the couch and you fall asleep quickly.
For the next few months things would continue to stay the same.
Tumblr media
Today was the day. It was over between you and David. Not only was he abusive he was also lazy. He never held a job for more than a few days. This made it your responsibility to pay all of the bills. Which you would be able to do if David didn’t spend all of your hard earned money. It was embarrassing to have to return the groceries because your card declined. Especially if you considered that you had gotten paid the day before. When you called your bank they told you about a charge for a few hundred dollars that was made with David’s card.
You were furious and you were using that rage that had built up over the two years of abuse to keep you going. When you get to the apartment you close the door gently, hoping to catch him off guard. The conversation in the living room however freezes you in place.
“Look at you so pretty on your knees for me.” His voice was deeper and the statement was followed by a groan.
It was no secret that he had cheated before but to bring them into the home you paid for was just another insult. As quietly as you could you walked into the living room. David sat on the couch while the woman he was with was on her knees. They were both distracted, him with his head thrown back and eyes closed in pleasure and she had her lips around his dick. If you still loved him it would have broken your heart.
“What the fuck David?” Your presence startled both of them. The woman quickly started to get up and look for her top. “What did you spend my money on? Was it her? Did you spend the money that I worked hard to earn on her?”
She started walking away, looking embarrassed and shooting an apologetic look at you.
“I didn’t know he was in a relationship.” She says quickly and quietly.
“Hey you don’t have to leave. I’ll make her leave. Come back here baby.”
“He isn’t anymore. But trust me the best thing you can do is stay away from him, he’s nothing more than an abusive prick.” You yelled at her retreating as you glared at David.
He followed her to the door trying to convince her that he wasn’t what you said he was. You ran into the bathroom with your phone and locked the door before you dialed 9-1-1. It was only a matter of seconds before he would try and hurt you.
“9-1-1 what is your emergency?” You heard the operator say.
“My name is Y/N Y/L/N. My boyfriend, ex-boyfriend now is-” You scream when you hear his voice behind the door. He slams against it. The operator tries to get your attention. You quickly give her your address just before David finally breaks through the door.
“You stupid fucking bitch. I am going to kill you.”
He reached for you even as you tried to fight him off. This time you wouldn’t go down without a fight. You kicked and screamed and scratched him. David still managed to get his hands around your throat and he squeezed hard.
“Why do you always make me hurt you? Do you like to feel pain you stupid bitch? I’ll make you feel pain.”
He squeezed more and you were starting to feel hazy, your vision blurred and it was to the point of blacking out. With one more effort you kicked him in the groin and he let you go. You sucked in the air you very desperately needed and then you began to cough while David bent over due to the pain. Then you ran into the kitchen with the intention of grabbing something to defend yourself with. Just as you were about to grab a knife his hand is in your hair and he pulls you back in a harsh manner before slamming you face first into countertop.
“I guess you’re in the mood to learn the hard way aren’t you?” He growled in your ear before he grabbed one of your arms and pulled it back forcefully.
You tried to scream but the pain had knocked the air from your lungs. Something was dislocated or broken you weren’t sure. You were disoriented due to the pain of your arm and of being slammed into the counter but you were sure you could feel him tugging your pants down and then the sound of his belt. He pressed himself against you and you could feel skin against skin.
“You interrupted me and my other girl so now you have to finish what she started.”
“No. No stop. Don’t.” You say as you move your free hand around trying to grab something, anything to save you until the cops show up. Panic drove you to fight harder.
You feel a handle and you grab it as you push yourself off the counter as best you could. With as much strength as you had you swing what you realized was a frying pan, hitting him in the face and making him stumble back again. You try to run again, to head for the door but David recovers quickly and again pulls you back before pushing you into the wall. Your head almost bounced against it and you froze when you saw he held a knife in his hand. He pressed it against your chest hard enough to break the skin and blood to trickle out of it.
“You have been a pain in my ass. Was it so hard to do what I said? To give me what I wanted? You just have to make me angry don’t you?” He seethes.
The front door slams open and two cops stand there. They quickly pull out their guns and point them at David. If it were possible his already dark eyes grow darker.
“You called the cops on me? You stupid cunt.”
He raises his hand to plunge the knife into your chest. You close your eyes as tears flow freely as you accept your fate and at the sharp pain in your chest you open your eyes and David is turning to dust.
“What is happening? Did you do that?” One of the cops asks you as he watched his partner disappear right beside him.
There’s a crash outside and then another. There’s crying and screaming as people continue to disappear. You sink onto the floor, unsure if you should be relieved that David is gone or worried that you might have imagined it. The cop looks between you and the door of the building deciding on what he should do. He leaves for a moment and just as quickly he’s back, this time with paramedics following him. The officer places a card in your hand and then leaves to help others outside but you can’t be bothered to care.
Tears break free and you’re not sure whether they’re from relief that it will be over soon or that you may still survive. Either way you didn’t care and let darkness take over your vision.
Tumblr media
9 months later.
A lot had happened since the day you almost died. Half of humanity had vanished, so had David. His disappearance had been easy to accept but the aftermath of that fight would follow you for the rest of your life. He had managed to stab you in the chest but the knife didn’t go deep enough to cause permanent damage. There was a fracture to the bones in your forearm. You sustained an orbital fracture and because it wasn’t the first time you’d been hit in the face your eyesight was affected. Now you needed glasses and it took months to be able to get into a new normal due to other injuries and ptsd.
With the blip and half of your coworkers gone you were relieved that you didn’t lose your job. When you were able to talk to your new boss they gave you the time you needed and even accommodated your need to work from home. It was mostly due to the fact that they couldn’t afford to lose anyone else but still you were grateful. As soon as you were able to, you moved out of the apartment you had once shared with David. There was nothing there but bad memories. Slowly but surely you were able to move on and give yourself a better life.
You had been encouraged to join a support group for survivors of domestic abuse. It was exactly what you did or tried to do. Recently there had been so many support groups that popped up, mostly due to the blip, that it was overwhelming. With your service dog in tow you entered the room you had been directed toward. The meeting had already started and you found the last available seat. You tried not to but you looked around a few times hoping there was no one you recognized. Except there was one person. Steve Rogers, he was leading the group. You tilted your head slightly as you wondered how someone would be abusive toward him, but you remember that abuse comes in all forms and you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. And it’s not like you knew him personally, he probably wouldn’t even know you’re in the room.
“We had our whole future planned out.” A man a few seats to your left said. “Our wedding was supposed to be six months ago and now she’s just gone. How am I supposed to move on from that?”
Your eyes widen slightly as you realize you were in the wrong group so you try to quietly and quickly get out of there. As soon you’re halfway down the hall you hear the door open.
“Miss, is everything ok?”
You stop and look over your shoulder to see Steve Rogers getting closer. Your dog, Marvin, places himself between both of you and lets out a small growl.
“Yes, everything’s fine.” You said once you turned around. He kept his distance and you appreciated it.
“If it’s not too much to ask, why did you leave the group?”
“Uhm,” you felt your mouth go dry unsure of how to answer and how he would respond when he learned of your mistake. Marvin nudged your thigh to give you something to focus on. Your hand came down to touch the top of his head and the feeling of his fur through your fingers grounded you. “I uhm, I realized I was in the wrong group.”
“Oh, well we’re the only group left in the building for the afternoon.” He pulls out a sheet of paper from his back pocket. “What group were you looking for? I can tell you when they’ll meet next time.” He looks up from the paper and smiles. It’s a warm and kind smile that makes you want to trust him.
Steve would never say this but he can hear how fast your heart is beating. If it weren’t for the small beads of sweat forming on your brow and the way your hand was shaking even though you were holding on to your dog's leash he’d think you were nervous to meet him. Something had happened to you that’s for sure and he wanted to know what so that he could help.
“It’s ok, I’ll just find another group. Thank you.”
“Ok, well if you decide you want to talk to someone, you can wait for me here. There’s only a few minutes left.” He smiled again and when you gave him a small ok he turned and walked back into the room where the group was.
You turned around and left. Once you were outside though you stopped and questioned if it would be so bad to talk to him about it, or just talk to someone outside of your therapist and coworkers. He didn’t seem like the type of person that would judge you. But you questioned if you could trust your judge of character, after all it was you that dated David. You debated, you knew his actions weren’t your fault, it’s what your therapist had said. Soon the group walked out of the building and still you waited around. Steve smiled when he saw that you were still there.
“Hi, I’m glad you stayed. I’m Steve.” He said as he got closer.
“Y/N, and this is Marvin.”
“Is he a service dog?” You nod at his question and he smiles with a quick nod of his own. “There’s a coffee shop at the end of the block. Would you like to go?”
You looked at him and then down the block where you could barely see the tables and chairs outside.
“Uhm, sure.”
He gestured for you to go first, it didn’t go unnoticed how you flinched. Still he fell in step with you. Marvin walked in between you, ready to protect you. At the shop you ordered a hot chocolate and you insisted on paying for your own order. As soon as you both get your drinks you sit outside, preferring the cool breeze of the early evening.
“So can I ask you anything?”
“As long as I can not answer if I want to.”
He gives you one single nod. “Did you leave because of me?”
“No? I really was in the wrong group. Why would I leave because of you?” You ask timidly.
“A lot of people blame me for not being able to stop this from happening.”
You looked at him closely this time. He looked tired and sad. Had people repeatedly told him it was his fault.
“Well in that case I should thank you.”
He was taken aback by it and it showed. His eyebrows shot up and he opened and closed his mouth as if he wanted to say something but didn’t know what. You couldn’t believe you were about to open up to him.
“I almost died that day. If the blip hadn’t happened at that moment I would have.”
“I’m sorry you had such a close call. May I ask how or why?”
You looked up at him. His brows furrowed in concern and his eyes full of worry as he looked at you.
“I’d rather not talk about it.” You said in a small voice.
“Ok, say no more.”
You both sit in a rather awkward silence while finishing your drinks. Marvin sits by your side, every once in a while laying his head on your lap to keep you calm.
“I should get going.” You say after checking your watch. “Thank you, it was nice meeting you.” You say as you quickly get up and throw away your used cup.
“It was nice meeting you too. I run the group every Wednesday and Friday, if you ever want to talk you can wait for me and we can come here again.”
“Thank you but I don’t think it will be a good idea.”
“Ok, well here is my number,” he grabs a napkin and writes it for you. “If you ever need to talk to someone, you can call me day or night.”
You look at the napkin and then up at him. “Why would you do that?”
“I just want to help.”
“Ok.” You say as you fold the napkin up and stuff it in your pocket. “Have a good night Steve.”
“You too.”
He smiles one more time at you and then you walk away. As you turn the corner you see that he’s still standing by the table and watching as you leave before heading back in the direction you’d come from. When you get home you pull out the napkin and save his number in your phone even though you know you’ll never use it, it was just cool to know you had Captain America’s number.
There was no way you’d ever see him again.

Decisions, Chapter 8 - Eyes of the Father
Summary: The fight between the different Avengers over Bucky upsets Lacey but her emotions are tempered by a phone call.
Length: 4 K
Characters: Lacey, Clint, Laura, Steve, Bucky, OMC Agent Jones.
Warnings: none
Author notes: Set during and after Avengers: Civil War. Told from Lacey’s POV.
<<Chapter 7
👩🏼‍🍼 📺 📱
As Lacey was out on the tractor moving some deadwood trees she noticed Laura and Clint on the porch of their home.  It looked like they were having an argument which was unusual because they were so attuned to each other they rarely raised their voices when disagreeing.   She hopped off and unhitched the chain that dragged the dead tree, then rode the tractor to the barn.  As she drove past the other two they lowered their voices and watched her park the ancient vehicle.  She came out of the barn and stared at both of them.
"What's going on?" she asked.
"Clint found something out and I think he should tell you," said Laura.  "He thinks it's need to know and you don't need to know yet.”
Lacey turned her gaze on him until he finally swore.  "They found Bucky," he said.  "In Bucharest, Romania, like we thought.  The authorities have accused him of bombing a UN meeting in Vienna that killed 12 and injured 70.  He's been taken into custody and they're transporting him to the Joint Counter Terrorist Centre in Berlin.  They're connected to the CIA, so you know how this is going to go down."
"You're thinking death penalty, aren't you?" she asked steadily.
"Yeah," he admitted.  "They'll go through the motions of giving him a psychiatric assessment and assign him a lawyer but they've been itching to throw the book at him ever since they found out the Winter Soldier's identity.  I'm sorry."
"Have you heard from Steve or Tony?" she asked.
"That's the thing," said Clint.  "Steve went to warn him and try to get him to give himself up to him.  They ended up in a pretty intense fight with the elite squad that was sent.  No deaths but Bucky hurt quite a few of them.  Steve and Sam are both in custody.  Tony wants them to support the CIA taking Bucky."
"What?" asked Lacey, upset.  "When did Tony start believing them?"
"Since Secretary Ross threatened to prosecute Steve and Sam for helping Bucky," replied Clint.  "Tony thinks he's walking a middle line, being reasonable.  I don't think Steve agrees with him on this.  Neither do I for that matter.  It all boils down to these Sokovia Accords and how they're being used."
There was the sound of a baby crying and both Lacey and Laura tilted their heads listening.  "That's mine," said Lacey, checking her watch.  "He's probably hungry."
She turned around and went up to her room where 8 month old Tommy was crying.  Picking him up she held him closely, then checked his diaper.  It was wet so she changed him first before sitting down in the rocking chair, lifting her T-shirt up and helping him latch on.  She offered him her fingers to hold and he grasped them firmly as he nursed hungrily.  She had wondered if all babies were this hungry or just this one but Laura assured her all three of her children were voracious feeders until they began eating solids.   It just hadn't happened with Tommy yet, even though he had been taking solids for several months.  With her free hand she turned on the TV in her room and found a news alert on all the channels.  The Winter Soldier had been activated while in custody, went on a rampage, then escaped.  It was believed Captain America/ Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson were helping him.  The authorities were looking for all three.  It had just gone from bad to worse.  She carried Tommy in her arms as she came down the stairs to see Clint and Laura watching the same news reports.
"They'll shoot him on sight now, won't they?" she asked openly.
"It doesn't look good," agreed Clint, whose cell phone went off at that moment.
Looking at the call display, he answered it while walking outside.  Laura kept looking at him through the window, her face concerned, until he walked back in.  His face was set in grim determination and she knew he had made an important decision.
"How soon?" asked Laura.
"Right away," he replied.  "Lacey, that was Sam.  Bucky was triggered by the UN psychiatrist sent to assess him.  They think he was a HYDRA mole that set up the Vienna bombing.  Bucky was knocked out while fighting with Steve but when he came to he remembered the man asked about a set of winter soldiers still in hibernation in Siberia.  They think he's gone to activate them.  They want my help to get out of Germany.  There are a couple of other people I need to get first then I'm going to help them.  We're going after the doctor."
"Won't that put you in jeopardy if you're caught?" she asked.
"Wouldn't be the first time," he replied, looking intently at Laura.  "Tell the kids I'm sorry about the water skiing.  Now I have to go break Wanda out of the compound."
He and Laura went to their bedroom leaving Lacey in the living room holding Tommy, feeling helpless.  He came down in his gear, walked out to the barn, then exited carrying his bow and arrows.  They followed him out to a second barn which he opened to reveal a quinjet.  Lacey looked at him with amazement.
"Permanent loan," he joked.
After kissing Laura firmly he got into the quinjet and started it up while the two women went out into the farmyard.  Slowly he guided it out of the structure then raised it up into the air before applying the throttle.  Lacey put her arms around Laura's shoulders and the two women bent their heads together.
"I wondered how long it would take for him to leave retirement," admitted Laura.
They both went about their farm duties, then made dinner for the kids.  As expected they were disappointed about their dad having to leave but it wasn't the first time it had happened.  The following morning Tommy woke up at his usual time and as Lacey fed him she turned the TV on.  There was another special report on TV about the Avengers fighting amongst themselves at the Leipzig airport.  Holding Tommy she opened the door and called to Laura who was feeding Nathaniel in her room.  She brought him into Lacey's room and they watched together as they fed their boys.
"This isn't good," Lacey said to Laura.  "It's going to split the team apart completely."
Laura watched intently then looked stricken at Lacey.  "They're changing their tactics," she said.  "Clint said they were all going to try to get out of there but it looks like they're taking on more of the fight to give Steve and Bucky the opportunity to escape.  It could mean they're expecting to be arrested."
Sure enough, as soon as Steve and Bucky escaped in the quinjet the other Avengers who had sided with them were taken into custody.  Laura phoned a number on her phone and by the sound of it the person who answered was Nick Fury.  It was hard listening to a one-sided phone conversation but when Laura hung up she wasn't as upset as she had been.
"Fury will do what he can," said Laura.
They heard nothing until the next day when Fury confirmed that Clint, Sam, Wanda and a man unknown to them named Scott Lang had been placed into custody in an ultra secure facility called The Raft.  Fury admitted there wasn't much he could do for them while they were in that facility.  He also told them Natasha had helped Steve and Bucky escape.  Authorities were looking for her.
"Looks like we'll have to wait this out," said Laura, after hanging up.
Although Laura refused to show anything but a positive face to her older two children Lacey knew how worried she was when she heard a knock on her door while she was nursing Tommy later that night.
"Come in," she said, to the door opening and Laura entering.  "Are you okay?"
"No," she replied, her voice strained.  "Can I cry in here?  The kids won't hear me.  I can't keep it in any longer."
"Go for it," said Lacey, who was almost finished.  "Get under the covers, pull them over your head and let it rip."
Tommy was almost asleep so Lacey stopped feeding him, put him in the cradle and moved it to her bathroom, closing the door.  Then she got on top of the bed and put her arm around Laura.  As soon as she did the tears began to flow.  She held her friend, stroking her hair and just being there for her.  Laura cried for some time then composed herself, blew her nose and hugged Lacey.
"Thank you," she whispered.  "I had to get it out somehow.  I'll be alright now.  I'm glad you were here."
"Hey, you've been here for me this whole time," replied Lacey.  "I owe so much more to you."
They hugged and Laura left for her own room.  Lacey got under the covers, breathing deeply to centre herself.  Then she remembered something and went to the bathroom, opening the door.  Tommy was still asleep in his cradle.
"Sorry, little man," she whispered.  "Let's bring you back out here."
She sat looking at him, gently touching his dark hair.  His face was so beautiful and she could see the rapid eye movement behind his eyelids.
"What's going through your mind right now?" she asked him softly.
He gave a little laugh in his sleep and she smiled.  No matter what happened to his dad she would always be there for him.  Always.
The sound of her phone on vibrate wakened Lacey and she looked at the call display.  It was Steve.  She answered it quickly.
"You know it's barely sunrise here," she said by way of greeting.
"I could always phone back," said a voice she hadn't heard for so long.
"Bucky?" she questioned, her voice trembling.  She was fully awake now.  "Is it really you?"
"Yeah, it's me," he confirmed.  "I had it all set up in my head what I would say to you and now I find my mind has gone blank."
"Where are you?" she asked.
"Someplace safe," he replied.  "They're going to treat me.  I lost my titanium arm when Stark blasted it off so they're going to remove what's left of it and maybe give me a new one.  They're also going to find a way to get HYDRA out of my head.  I'll have to go into cryostasis until they figure it out so you won't hear from me for a while.  That's why I wanted to talk to you now."
"Did Steve tell you anything?" she asked hesitantly.
"About the baby?  Yeah, Steve told me."   His voice sounded like he was ready to cry.  "I wish I had known.  I would have come back for you and made it right.  He's really my son."
It was said as a statement not a question.  "He looks just like you and he's such a good baby," replied Lacey.  "I didn't know who else to turn to when I approached Steve."
"You did good," he said warmly.  "Steve's family.  He wants to talk to you so I'll give him his phone.  Will you wait for me?  I never did find anyone else and I hope we have something worth waiting for, especially now."
"As long as it takes," she replied enthusiastically.  "I never found anyone either.  Those eyes captured me from the start.  You call me when you can.  Oh, and Bucky?  I got your letter.  Thank you for that."
"The CIA has your book that I took from you and the one I bought," he said hesitantly.  "Sorry for losing them.  Hopefully they don't come looking for you."
"I'm in a safe location," she replied. "Don't worry about the books.  Just be safe."
She felt a joy in her that made her feel giddy inside.  When Steve started talking to her she had to ask him to repeat what he said.
"I'm going underground," he said.  "This might be the last you hear from me for a while.  But I have the location of where Clint and the others are.  I'll get them out.  There's a good chance Clint can make a deal for house arrest.  He'll be stuck on the farm but he'll be with his family."
"Steve, why did Tony blast Bucky's arm off?" asked Lacey.
There was a long pause.  "Bucky killed Tony's parents when he was the Winter Soldier," he replied.  "Zemo had traffic cam footage.  It sent Tony into a rage.  Bucky and I had to team up and fight him together to stop him.  I don't think he'll come after you but if he shows up at the farm he probably won't be friendly."
"So much hurt," commented Lacey.  "The Avengers are finished then?"
"For now," answered Steve.  "I sent him an olive branch but it will be up to him to accept it."
"You told Bucky about the baby," she stated.
"Yeah," he admitted, and she could picture him looking down as he answered.  "It was important for him to know the truth and now he has something to come home to."
"Not if the CIA has their way," said Lacey.  "They want him dead."
"Well, they're complicit in his captivity and torture," he replied.  "Those HYDRA files Natasha released?  The man who framed Bucky was able to crack the encryption on a number of them.  The CIA knew about him in the late 1940s, early 1950s.  They knew and did nothing to rescue him because they had aspirations for their own Winter Soldier program, soldiers they could control, unlike me.  Fury knows a very good lawyer who has agreed to represent Bucky.  He thinks he can get Bucky a pardon."
Lacey couldn't help it as a sob escaped her throat, then another and another.  Her cries were loud enough to wake Tommy and he started to cry.  She put the phone on speaker as she lifted Tommy out of the cradle trying to soothe him and herself at the same time.  Bucky's voice came back on.
"Is that the baby crying?" he asked.  "Is he okay?"
"He's fine," replied Lacey, opening her nightgown to nurse Tommy.  "He's just hungry, always hungry this one."
"That might be the super soldier in him," said Bucky.  "We need a lot of calories to function.  Give him lots of bottles."
"No bottle for this baby, it's Mommy and solid foods," replied Lacey.  "Every four hours, like clockwork."
"I'll bet you look beautiful nursing him," said Bucky wistfully.  "I wish I was there right now."
"My phone has video capability," said Lacey.  "Next time you call use the video call on your end."
"He will," said Steve, interrupting.  "Look, tell Laura that I'll get Clint home.  You take care of yourself and Tommy.  Somehow Bucky will come back to you, I promise."
"Okay, goodbye Steve, goodbye Bucky," said Lacey softly.  "You take care of yourselves as well."
She hung up and looked lovingly at Tommy.  "That was your Dad," she said.  "He knows about you and he wants us to be a family."  Tommy smiled at her as he nursed.  "You like that, don't you?  I don't know when he can come home but I'll tell you everything I know about him.  Then he won't be a stranger to you when he does finally return."
When Lacey heard Laura get up she told her about the phone call and what Steve said.  It was hard to temper their expectations but they did, working the farm together.  About ten days after the phone call a large black SUV drove up to the farm and FBI Agent Jones stepped out from the driver's seat.   Lacey could barely disguise her hostility but he wasn't there just to see her.  He opened the passenger door of the SUV and Clint stepped out.  Both men walked to where Lacey and Laura were sitting on the steps holding their babies.
"Hi honey, I'm home," said Clint, smiling in that understated way he had.  "I'm retired for good this time."  He lifted the cuff of his pant leg revealing an ankle monitor.  "Agent Jones of the FBI is the only one who knows about the farm and will come looking if I step outside a 10 mile radius from it.  It means I can still pick up your mail Lacey."
She glared at the agent and Jones looked frustrated.  "I'm not your enemy, Lacey," he said.  "I suspected you had other reasons for asking for the Avengers help and I can see by that little guy exactly what that was.  I'm not judging.  Take a walk with me, please."
Clint nodded his agreement and Lacey stood up, still carrying Tommy.  She and Agent Jones walked towards a small hill that overlooked most of the farm's crop land.
"How come you are on Clint's file?" she asked.  "You were based in Delaware."
"I got transferred," he replied.  "We closed your file.  The Russians don't seem to be as interested in you anymore.  All the same, if you can keep a low profile, which isn't easy considering your book is selling well, I would be happier.  I received a phone call from a Nick Fury, very persuasive man, who suggested I keep an eye on Clint and you at the same time.  He sent me a digital file with some decrypted HYDRA files on it.  Those HYDRA files prove that the CIA left Barnes in the hands of an enemy willingly.  As far as I'm concerned they're the guilty party in most of this.  Barnes was a victim and I truly hope he gets the help he needs."
She stopped and looked at him almost in disbelief.  "You're on Bucky's side now?" she asked.
"Although I was looking for Barnes as a law man there was a lot about him that didn't add up," he admitted.  "The CIA painted him as this monster who was out of control.  Yet he spent time with you, helping you with your repairs, then took on four very dangerous Russian heavies without killing them.  Until he was framed for the Vienna bombing there was no sign of him, no word of him hurting or killing anyone.  That didn't seem like a killer out of control.  It did seem like a man rejecting his past and trying to be better."
"Do you know where he is?" asked Lacey.
"I have an idea," replied Jones.  "Truthfully there isn't any place here in the States that can treat him for what HYDRA did to him.  The brainwashing is so deeply embedded it will require some new thinking to treat it.  There is one place in the world that may, just may, have that technology.  Wakanda.  Prince T'Challa was all for hunting Barnes down and killing him himself in retaliation for the death of his father.  Then he suddenly appeared with another man, a Colonel Zemo, and said he was the man who set up Barnes.  I suspect he feels guilty about how he viewed Barnes and he wants to make amends."
"Then you know more than I do," replied Lacey, at first wondering if she should say more.  "I heard from Bucky.  He wouldn't tell me where he was.  Old habits die hard, I guess.  He did say they were going to treat him for the HYDRA brainwashing, and replace his arm."
"Good," said Jones bluntly.  "It's a beginning anyways.  As for you and this little guy, no one will hear about him from me.  He looks just like Barnes, doesn't he?"
Jones tickled Tommy under his chin and the little boy giggled, making the FBI agent smile.  They walked back to where Clint was holding Nathaniel.
"I'll come out to see you on an irregular basis," said Jones.  "If you have to go outside of the 10 mile radius for any reason call me and I will escort you.   Otherwise enjoy your retirement."
"Agent Jones?" called Lacey, remembering one more thing.  "Did you ever find out if there was a leak at your end?  You know, about the flash drive?"
"Yeah, there was," replied the agent.  "The same person who ordered me to bug your home.  He owed money to the Russian mob, got in over his head during an underground poker game.  One of the Russian heavies recognized him and I saw it on his face.  We checked him out and found the evidence.  Thanks to you we found an informant for the Russian mafia high up in the FBI."
He returned to his vehicle and left.  Laura looked at Clint.  "Lacey had a phone call from Bucky," she said.  "Steve told him about the baby."
"Good," said Clint.  "He's a good fighter and he handled himself well."
"But what did you think of him?" asked his wife.
"He's okay?" asked Clint.  "It's not like I was able to have a long conversation with him."  The two women giggled and he looked exasperated at first then shook his head.  "I'm going to shower and change.  Then you can tell me everything you know and I'll tell you everything I know."
When Clint came back he held Nathaniel while he described everything that happened at Leipzig Airport, including the serious injury suffered by Colonel Rhodes.  He briefly described being imprisoned on the Raft, refusing to go too much into detail about how they were treated there.  Then he described how Steve Rogers broke into the prison and released them, transporting them to a safe location.
"Scott Lang, a new guy from San Francisco, also turned himself in and agreed to house arrest," said Clint.  "He has a little girl and didn't want to miss out on her growing up.  Wanda has gone into hiding.  Sam and Steve went underground.  I can't believe Prince T'Challa gave sanctuary to Barnes.  He blamed Barnes for his father's death until they found out that Zemo set him up."
"Bucky wouldn't say if he was in Wakanda," said Lacey, "but he said that he would be treated for the activation words."
"Still have a thing for him?" asked Clint.
"He said if he had known about Tommy he would have returned right away and made it right," replied Lacey.  "To a 1940s guy that means marrying me, right?"  Clint nodded, smiling.  "He asked me to wait for him, so we could find out if we do have something.  I said I would."
"It could be a long time," cautioned Clint.
"I know," replied Lacey, touching Tommy's hair.  "Agent Jones figured the Wakandans have to invent a whole new process to treat him.  Who knows how long it will take?"
"Well, I'm out of it now," said Clint, kissing Nathaniel on the head.  "My life is here, for good."  Laura put a hand on his.  "You're still welcome to stay with us, Lacey.  I think Laura and I kind of got used to having you around."
"Thanks," she replied.  "It does feel like home here.  I think when Bucky and I do figure out our relationship I'll buy a farm.  The life has kind of grown on me." She lifted Tommy up in the air.  "You like it here, don't you, little man?"
Both Clint and Laura smiled kindly at her and Tommy as he squealed.  His squeals set Nathaniel off and the two boys found an audience for their antics.  Laura went into the house and brought out a blanket for the two babies to lie on.  Nathaniel was already crawling and Tommy watched him intently as he laid on his back.  Rolling over he tried several times to raise himself onto his hands and knees.  When he finally did then stood up immediately both Clint and Laura expressed surprise but for Lacey it was confirmation that Tommy was special.  He had super soldier blood and that meant a whole new level of protection would be needed for him.  Until Bucky could be with them it would have to come from a bunch of Avengers that were scattered to the winds.  At least here on the farm he was isolated and for now that would have to do.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Where am I? you wondered. Beep. Beep. Beep. You could hear the machines that were monitoring your condition as they emitted a steady rhythm of signals. The numbers for your vital signs like your BP, pulse rate and oxygen level were reflected on the screen. The numbers indicated that they were at a normal level, but you were still unconscious.
You could feel the delicate touch of someone holding your right hand. For a fleeting moment, you thought that Bucky had somehow escaped and made it back to you. Then your eyes flew open as you realized he was still stuck in that HYDRA base, and it was up to you to get him back. With a sharp gasp, you sat upright in the bed, straining the wires and setting off the alarms for the machines monitoring you.
"Whoa, easy there, sweetie. Shh, we've got you. Come, sit back on your pillows and relax," Wanda soothed.
You fell back against your pillows as directed, which stopped the machines from going wild with their readings of your vital signs. Off to your left, you noticed Steve sitting in a chair, looking like he hadn't slept well in a few days. "Hey there, Sunshine. How you doin'?" he asked.
Sunshine. One of Bucky's many nicknames for you, his favorite. "Been better, Steve. By the looks of it, so have you. How long have I been out?" you wondered.
"Couple of days. What's the last thing you remember?" he inquired.
You searched your memory of two days ago, when you returned to the Tower. "I came back after I heard James' voicemail message about going on the mission," you started, choking back a sob. "I got a taxi to bring me here as soon as possible. After I put my stuff in our room, and I saw you all in the COMMs room....I knew something had gone wrong. I shouldn't have left here, Steve," you whispered, the tears now flowing freely down your face. "I never got to tell him....."
"Hey now, try not to think about that right this second. You know those HYDRA missions go wrong about as many times as they go right. The important thing is for you to rest, because we've got work to do, and we're going to need your help," Steve replied. "And Sunshine? Don't worry, you'll get your chance to tell Bucky....whatever it is you never got to tell him," Steve promised with a wink. He gave your hand a final squeeze, then he and Wanda stood up from their chairs. Steve pressed a kiss to your forehead and walked out of the room with Wanda, closing the door behind them.
"I hope so, Steve. I really hope so," you replied softly. Now that you were sitting in your room alone, your thoughts drifted back to what you'd heard of the mission. Not only was Dr. Zalinsky alive, but he was holding Bucky prisoner, threatening to do to him what had been done to you. There was no way you were going to allow that happen to anyone else, let alone the love of your life. You just had to figure out a rescue plan and put it into action. As you let your mind wander, the tendrils of sleep slowly took over your brain, and you had no choice but to close your eyes.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Bucky heard the heavy door in his cell slide open and looked up as Ryan got pushed inside. Ryan was back from his "session" with Dr. Zalinsky. Bucky wasn't sure how much more the agent would be able to withstand before it would be too much. He had to figure out a way for himself and Ryan to get away from the facility and to a nearby safe house before any HYDRAs knew they were missing.
His thoughts drifted back to you and what you might be doing back at the Tower. He hoped that whatever was going on, that you were safe and unharmed. Bucky knew that Steve and everyone else would be looking after you, making sure you were okay until he could be rescued. He also knew that the worst part would be the waiting, and he hated that he was putting you through it.
That last day before he left on his mission kept playing on a loop in his head. When you told him of your new work assignment, his first reaction was that you'd be putting yourself in danger. Bucky did enough of that on a regular basis to know that there was no way he wanted that for you. Even when you explained that you wouldn't be going into the field, all he could see was you returning to the compound hurt or worse.
Bucky was sitting on his cot, head resting on the wall behind him and eyes tilted towards the ceiling. If only I had slowed down and at least listened to her, been more supportive instead. Dammit, I know she's a strong woman, smart, fully capable of handling COMMs for a mission. She can do just about anything she puts her mind to. Wish I'd said that rather than what I did say, Bucky thought. He'd take back what he said, just for the chance to see you again. "Oh, solnyshka, my solnyshka," he mumbled. "I miss you so much," he whispered. When he closed his eyes, a single tear slid down his cheek.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
A couple of days later, you were released from the MedBay and allowed to return to the room you shared with Bucky. Although it was nice to be out of the MedBay, the room felt empty without your super soldier boyfriend. At the moment, you were sitting on the edge at the foot of your side of the bed, facing the headboard, lost in thought.
Alpine hopped up on the bed to join you, her right front paw no longer causing her pain. The same ability that allowed you to communicate with her also included healing properties. She nudged at your hands that were clasped in your lap, making you chuckle. "You want some attention, pretty girl? Is that it?" you asked. You reached out your hand to pet her luxuriously soft fur, which helped to reduce some of your anxiety about the current situation with Bucky.
You heard knocking at your door, and called out to the visitor to come in. "Hi, Wanda. Any news on James?" you inquired wearily.
Wanda took a seat on the edge of the bed on Bucky's side, facing you. In response to your question, she shook her head. "Nothing yet, honey. That doesn't mean they've stopped looking, although Fury seems to be convinced that they haven't moved him," she reported. "It's only a matter of time before we find them, until Bucky's safe and sound back here with you."
"I hope so, Wanda," you replied wistfully. "I need him as far away from Dr. Zalinsky as possible. There's a reason that maniac was kicked off campus all those years ago. Too many people were having adverse reactions to whatever he was handing out during his 'study'. As it was, I only took two or three doses of the stuff, but I quit taking it before his program was shut down. But I'm afraid that the meds I did take only made a bad situation worse," you explained.
"What did it do to you?" Wanda asked.
"At the time, Zalinsky told me it would help with the headaches and dizziness. I wasn't that far into the trial, and I would still get migraines off and on. I figured it wasn't working, so I quit taking the meds. There were others farther along in the program, and it made them extremely suspicious of those around them. Also made them paranoid, convinced that someone was lurking around every corner, out to do them harm," you added. "Some of them had even started acting out and in violent ways. The university's official statement chalked it up to 'adjustment issues' between students, which kept it mostly out of the press."
"How awful!" she gasped.
"Yeah, and it's the reason why they booted Zalinsky off the campus. I didn't think much of any after-effects causing me problems until that big headache hit a few weeks ago that put me in the MedBay. That's when Dr. Cho did the CAT Scan and found the red spot. She said it's the part of my brain that manages my ability to communicate with and heal animals. Like Alpine here," you smiled as you scratched behind the feline's ears.
"If you want, I could teach you how to control your ability, how to filter out some of the 'noise'," Wanda offered.
"Would you? That would be fantastic, Wanda, thank you. Because I'm definitely going to need that control when I go in with the team to rescue James," you noted grimly.
"Whoa, hold on a minute. Have you cleared that with Steve, Tony or even Fury about going on the mission?" she questioned.
"I have to go with them, Wan. Zalinsky said he would finish with James whatever had been started with me. I have no idea what those pills would've done to me, had I kept going with them. James has been through enough already, and I refuse to let Zalinsky make things worse for him. Besides, there's no telling what might happen if you combine the super serum and whatever Zalinsky's working with," you noted grimly.
"All right, meet me in the gym in an hour, and we'll start your training. The sooner you can control your ability, the sooner we can tell Tony to fire up the quinjet and go out after Bucky. Sound like a deal?" Wanda asked, holding out her hand for you to shake.
"Sounds like the perfect deal for me, Wan," you replied, enthusiastically returning her handshake. The two of you dissolved into giggles and fell into each other's fond embrace. "I just miss him so much," you choked out. "He may not be perfect, but for me, he's korol moego serdtsa," you added. (king of my heart)
"I know, darling, I know," she soothed and tightened her hold on you. "But for now, let's focus on harnessing this ability you now have, and see how we can turn this into an advantage in the field. One hour?" she kept her hands on your shoulders and leaned back to lock her gaze on you.
"One hour, Wanda," you promised. "Thank you." One final squeeze and then Wanda left your room.
During the next week, you worked with Wanda on controlling your ability, all while trying to keep your mind focused. It was difficult, especially since you knew that for each day that went by, that was one more day that Bucky was in danger from Zalinsky. Each time those thoughts invaded your concentration, you felt the effects right away. Slowly you were learning to filter out those thoughts and focus on seeing his face again, feeling his arms around you when you rescue him.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
One day, you, Steve, Tony and the rest of the team were in the conference room, reviewing various strategies for extracting Ryan and Bucky. The approach they were favoring so far was a brute force attack, using all available Avengers to bulldoze their way in. You knew that Zalinsky and HYDRA would be expecting this, but no matter how many times you voiced this opinion, it was dismissed.
"Tony, there are other ways besides blasting your way through at the front door," you attempted to remind him for what seemed like the fortieth time. "It's not exactly subtle, either."
"Oh, and you know this because of your extensive field experience, is that it?" he retorted. "Why don't you go practice talking to the animals, Dr. Doolittle. That way you leave the strategy meeting to the grown-ups, hmm?"
You slammed your hands on the table causing everyone to shift their focus to you. "DAMMIT, Tony, could you quit being an ass for two seconds?!? Zalinsky and HYDRA are holding a highly trained asset--their highly trained former asset--and a SHIELD agent of yours. They KNOW we're going to come after them and attempt a rescue. Maybe it's better that we try going through a back door or finding some other way in," you remarked.
Tony stood across from you at the conference table, barely containing his fury at you, his arms folded across his chest. "Fine, what is your proposal, O Gifted Strategist?" he smirked.
You resisted the urge to roll your eyes at Tony's sarcasm, because you finally had his attention. "Wanda has been working with me on filtering out a lot of the background stuff that comes with my ability. Helps me to focus on one particular animal, bird, insect, etc., so I can determine how to communicate with it. Now, I'm not perfect at it yet, but for my plan, I believe I have enough of a handle on it to make it work."
Tony briefly glanced at Wanda, who nodded at Tony and smiled her encouragement at you. "What I'm suggesting is this: HYDRA has cameras everywhere, so they'll be able to tell when we're within a certain range. If we could somehow disable those cameras, we can slip in undetected," you began.
"Hmm. I suppose we could try and hack into the cameras," Tony mused.
"I was thinking of a really low-tech approach," you replied. Tony raised one eyebrow as if to indicate that he was still listening. "There's bound to be rats or mice in a place like that. I can communicate with them to chew through the wires or otherwise block the camera. As soon as that's done, we break in." When you finished, you looked around at the others. Some were nodding their heads, some were deep in thought. Tony, however, did not seem impressed.
"Seriously? This is what you've come up with? Rodents to chew through the security camera wires, then we just waltz right in there and break out the prisoners?" Tony retorted. "Please tell me the rest of you aren't buying this--this--amateur plan. Nope, playtime is over, kiddo. Besides, there's no way I'm letting you tag along on this mission," he vowed.
You could feel the tears gathering behind your eyes, but you were determined not to let Tony or anyone else see them. Taking a deep breath to compose yourself, you locked your gaze on Tony. "For this plan to work, I must be on-site to communicate. They are holding two of your people, a SHIELD agent and an Avenger, one of whom I am extremely attached to. For better or worse, Zalinsky gave me this ability. Please let me use it to rescue the man I love," you pleaded.
For a moment, it looked like Tony was seriously considering your plan instead of his own. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger. Then he abruptly raised his head and shook it in rejection of your plan. "Nah, sorry. Can't do it. I just don't see this kind of a plan working out," he remarked.
You started to walk out when a radical and dangerous thought popped into your head, but unfortunately didn't stay there. "Or, you could always use me as bait," you suggested.
Everyone began to immediately protest, shouting over each other that it was a bad idea. "Wait a minute, please!" you implored. "Listen, you heard Zalinsky when Ryan and James were taken. Either he uses them for his lab experiments, or he grabs me and tries to finish what he started with me when I was in college," you reminded them.
The room erupted again, with a chorus of objections rising from all sides. The noise was starting to affect you, and Tony didn't appear willing to look further into adopting your plan. So, you left the conference room to get away from the commotion and into somewhere quiet.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Ryan paced the floor of the cell, muttering to himself. Clearly, the effects of the medication were starting to take hold, though Bucky wasn't sure if the meds were the cause. The constant motion of Ryan, along with his muttering under his breath, was making Bucky feel somewhat uneasy. He was sitting on the military cot, wedged into the corner next to the wall.
"Could you stop with the pacing? You'll only end up wearing yourself out, then someone will have to carry your ass out of here when they rescue us," Bucky grumbled.
Suddenly Ryan stopped in his pacing to glare at Bucky. "There is no rescue, you know. No one's coming for us," Ryan retorted.
Bucky rolled his eyes. "What do you mean, of course there's a rescue. The team is just waiting for the right time to barge in and lead us out of here," he affirmed.
"The team doesn't even know where we are, so they'll just waste time trying to find us. Then when they don't, they'll leave us here," Ryan snapped.
Bucky jumped up from his cot in a flash, and picked Ryan up with both hands, holding him against the wall. "Listen up, because I'm only gonna say this once. Nobody is going to abandon us. Zalinsky and whoever else is filling your head with this crap is lying to you. And you have to figure out a way to fight what the meds are doing to you or things are gonna get worse. Understand?"
All Ryan could do was nod his head, at which point Bucky let go of him. Once free, Ryan resumed his pacing, but only for a few minutes until he ultimately settled on his own cot. Bucky had taken up his previous position on his cot, one knee drawn up to his chest with his arms curled around it. "I know you're out there, solnyshka. Please come find me," he whispered to himself.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"So this is where you ran off to," a voice behind you stated. You had escaped to the roof and were curled up in one of the chairs, a blanket from your room draped around your shoulders.
"Go away, Loki. I'm not in the mood for anyone telling me about my lack of field experience, or that my ideas won't work. I already know I have no mission work under my belt, but I believe that my suggested plan of action has merit," you retorted.
"Which one? Plan 'A', where you direct your army of animals, insects and other creatures? Or Plan 'B', where you offer yourself as bait in exchange for the SHIELD agent and Barnes?" Loki probed, his eyes narrowed at you.
"Better me than them!" you exclaimed.
"You can't be serious!" Loki retorted. "How can you say that? You are just as important around here as Barnes and the other agent. So, what do you really think we should do?" he asked.
"You're right," you acknowledged quietly. "Logically, Plan 'A' is the best choice, where I use my ability to sneak on base. Wanda's been working with me on how to better focus my powers, but.... The only time my concentration really breaks is when I think about James being hurt," you admitted, dropping your gaze.
"Norns, you're in love with Barnes, aren't you?" Loki asked.
Eyes still cast downward, you nodded in confirmation of your love for James Buchanan Barnes. "I am. With all of my heart. Only we had an argument before this last mission, and I didn't get a chance to tell him that before he left," you sniffled. "I have to get him back, Loki. If I didn't think Tony would fire me or arrest me on the spot, I'd hijack his stupid plane right now to go after him. Anyone else is welcome to tag along," you remarked.
"Perhaps stealing a quinjet won't be necessary, darling. When I left the meeting, most of the team was trying to convince Stark of the merits of your Plan 'A'," Loki revealed.
At that moment, the door to the roof opened, revealing Sam Wilson. He walked over to where you were sitting and crouched down to your level. He held his arms out in invitation, which you took advantage of by launching yourself at him. "Oof! Aww, hey, babygirl. How you holdin' up, hmm?" he asked as he rubbed your back to comfort you.
"I'm okay, Sam," you replied. Your voice was muffled by his shoulder, so you drew back a little before speaking again. "As long as you tell me we're leaving soon to go and rescue James," you added, looking him directly in the eyes.
"Yeah, Tony sent me to find you two," Sam mentioned. "We've got the makings of a plan, and he wants to run it by everyone. Make sure it's airtight, no margin for error."
"Are you sure he even wants me there? I mean, with all of the field experience I don't have, I'd be surprised if he accepts any feedback I'd give," you grumbled.
Sam gave you a slightly exasperated look. "Come on, just hear him out. At least he's willing to discuss your idea, instead of going in all guns blazin' like he wanted to do before," Sam gently chided.
"I'm sorry, Sam. You're right. Let's go back to the conference room and see what Tony has to say. You with us, Loki?" you asked as you moved towards the door.
"Right behind you, darling," he replied.
The three of you returned to the conference room, where Tony revealed the plan to rescue Ryan and Bucky. Every so often, someone brought up a point that hadn't been considered, then everyone would discuss how to handle it. Finally, a formal battle plan had been devised, with a departure time decided to be three days from now.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
It was 2:37am on the day of the mission to rescue Bucky and you couldn't sleep. You decided to run through your mission prep list in your head. You had a bag with weapons sitting on the floor next to the bed, which Natasha had helped you pack yesterday. Another go-bag with a change of clothes, toiletries and other necessities was leaning against the weapons duffel.
A tactical suit was hanging on the back of your closet door, waiting for you to slip it on. At the moment, though, you found comfort in wearing Bucky's red Henley. The cuffs covered your hands like mittens, and you had on a pair of black sleep shorts underneath. You were sitting cross-legged on the bed, leaning your back against the headboard, thinking.
"Mrowr" you heard, followed immediately by the appearance of your snowy-white feline. She placed both front paws on your knees and gazed longingly at you. With a chuckle, you reached over and pulled her fully into your lap, scratching under her chin and feeling the vibrations from her purrs.
"What am I going to do with you, hmm?" you mused. "Now, listen. Peter promised he would take really good care of you while everyone is gone, but you still have to behave. You know that what I'm doing is important, otherwise I wouldn't be leaving you for someone else to look after. I'll be back before you know it," you affirmed. You weren't sure who you were trying to convince more, though, Alpine or yourself.
Your best hope is for everything to go according to plan, and that you quickly find Ryan and Bucky unharmed. However, you also remembered hearing enough tales of past missions to know that things rarely went that way. That's why you kept your back-up plan to yourself and promised that you would only use it as a last resort.
A soft knock at your door sounded and was followed by Natasha slipping in then re-closing the door behind her. She walked over to where you were sitting on the bed and climbed up to sit next to you. "So, first op. Are you nervous?" she asked.
You nodded, then turned to face the super-spy and former assassin. "I mean, I'd be dumb not to be nervous, but I know this is something I have to do. I can't let Zalinsky do to James what he's done to me," you replied. Staring at your hands, you added, "I really don't know how you all do this, time after time. I hope you know, you all have my deep and undying respect for doing it."
Nat threw her arm around your shoulders and pulled you closer. "And it's okay that you're feeling this way. Hell, I'd be afraid if you weren't feeling at least something about it. Just remember your training, and also who and what you're doing this for. You'll be all right, and the team has your back," she remarked.
"Thanks, Nat," you choked out. "I appreciate everyone's help in getting me this far. I won't let you down." You took a deep breath and asked, "It's time, right?" you inquired.
Natasha nodded, then hopped off the bed and walked around to your side. You had climbed down and were readjusting the pillows when she reached you. "Let's go get your boyfriend back, hmm?" she grinned.
She waited while you changed into your tac suit, then you linked arms with hers and walked towards the door. Natasha picked up the weapons bag at the door, then you picked up the other one. The two of you headed towards the hangar, each step increasing the butterflies in your stomach. Once you reached the quinjet, you and Natasha handed the bags to Steve, who was meticulously stacking the incoming cargo. He paused long enough to give you a hug and mumble some words of encouragement.
When Steve pulled back, he asked, "I'm just helping load up, but I'll be back here, with the COMMs team. You ready for this, Sunshine?"
All noise in the quinjet came to an abrupt halt and it was quiet enough to hear a pin drop. "'M ready, Cap. Before we take off, I want to say 'thank you' to all of you. I couldn't do this without you," you replied.
"Especially me, since it's my aircraft we're using," Tony smirked. "Strap in everyone, so we can get this show on the road." Each team member did as he asked and you felt the aircraft lift off the ground and head towards its destination.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Zalinsky entered the control room and examined the current footage from each camera. There were cameras pointed down hallways, at each exit and especially in the prison block. His eyes landed on the monitor for the interior of Ryan and Bucky's cell. A sinister smile formed on his face as he silently observed. Ryan was pacing the room as usual, while Bucky sat on his cot watching, but with no expression on his face.
"Oh, Soldat. Soon it will be your turn to participate in my glorious experiment. I'm excited to see how your serum-filled body will react to the medication," Zalinsky grinned.
"Doctor, he's just....sitting there. That's pretty much all he's done since we locked them in their cell. What if he doesn't react?" the technician asked.
"The mind powers of the Soldat are considerable. Probably more so, the longer he's been 'decommissioned'," Zalinsky spat out the last word. "It will be interesting to see how long it takes to break him. Especially when I mention Solnyshka," he remarked darkly.
As the men stared at the bank of monitors, they noticed that one by one, the screens were showing static then going dark. "What is happening?!?" Zalinsky thundered. His face paled when he saw your face on one of the hallway cameras. You looked directly into the camera and gave him a one-fingered salute just before it cut off.
"I don't know, Doctor," the technician frantically responded. He fiddled with the knobs and switches, desperately trying to restore video communication.
Zalinsky huffed in exasperation at the technician's inability to fix the problem at hand, and stormed down the hall. Soon he was in front of the door for Ryan and Bucky's cell. Zalinsky barked at the man guarding the door, ordering for it to be unlocked. Zalinsky took a deep breath to try and regain his composure, before barging into the cell.
"Well, well, Soldat. It appears that your friends are here to rescue you, and they brought me a gift. One of my former test subjects, your girlfriend, has broken into my base. I'm sure they think I'll just let you waltz out of there with them. Not a chance, Soldat," Zalinsky sneered.
Bucky remained seated on his cot, trying to look unaffected, but inside his heart was racing. Is he lying?? Or were you really here? he thought. Part of him knew this was no place for you, while another part of him couldn't wait to see you, hold you in his arms. That would have to wait until everyone was safe and on the way back to the compound. Bucky shrugged. "I don't know what you're talking about," he replied nonchalantly, his eyes never wavering from Zalinsky's glare.
Zalinsky snapped his fingers at his guards, then gestured for them to grab Ryan and Bucky and take them to the lab. Bucky had yet to see the lab, but given his past experience, it wasn't anywhere on his top 10 list of places to visit. Zalinsky's guards gripped Ryan's and Bucky's arms and marched them down the hallway to the lab, with the scientist following behind.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
As soon as you knew the cameras were down, you made your way down the corridor. Natasha led, followed by Wanda, you, then Loki. That left Tony, Sam and Thor outside to keep a path clear back to the quinjet. The COMMs team back in the compound told you that Zalinsky was on the move with Ryan and Bucky, and they were headed for the lab. You asked for directions to the area, with the intention of intercepting them.
>>>
The guards continued to lead Ryan and Bucky towards the lab. They stopped every once in a while, hearing the sounds of gunfire, from both inside and outside of the base. Bucky caught Ryan's eye and sent him a look that said the team was here, and that they would be rescued. In return, Ryan gave him a quick nod as the men continued to be shuffled to the lab.
>>>
When you came to a T-intersection of hallways, you heard the ramblings of Dr. Zalinsky. You could feel the slow burn of a pain in your head at just hearing his voice. Taking deep breaths, you tried to push the pain out of your mind, using some of what Wanda and Loki had taught you. The pain seemed to subside for the moment, allowing for a little easier breathing.
"We must be....near the....lab," you whispered, still fighting through the pain. COMMs confirmed your assessment, saying Ryan and Bucky had just entered the room. They were still each being held by Zalinsky's guards, while the doctor considered his next move. "I'm going in," you declared, as you tried to move past Wanda.
Loki grabbed your arm and pulled you back. "Don't be stupid," he hissed. "We can't protect you if you go in there alone with four guards and a deranged scientist," he pointed out.
"Hold on, let me think," you murmured. A shot whizzed past your head, embedding the round into the concrete wall in front of you. Shouting from behind you brought your attention to the group of HYDRA soldiers who had stumbled upon your position.
>>>
"Strap these two into the chairs while I prepare the solution," Zalinsky ordered. "Then go outside and see what the commotion is. Eliminate the threat, or I will eliminate you," he declared ominously.
The guards did as they were told, then ran out of the room. "Soon, Soldat. In just a few moments, you will be taking part in my greatest experiment. Once it is perfected, I will not hesitate to unleash it on the world," Zalinsky smirked. "Don't worry, your sacrifice will be duly noted in my files," he added.
>>>
Outside the lab doors, Natasha and Wanda had taken on Zalinsky's personal guards. Natasha delivered blow after blow, kicking and punching one guard until he lost consciousness. On the other guard, she swept his legs out from under him. When he fell, she managed to wrap her legs around his neck and squeezed until he was knocked out as well.
As Wanda faced off against her assailants, bundles of red energy crackled in her hands. She kept them by her sides until they moved close enough, then she let them go. The men were sent flying down the hall, colliding with the other HYDRA agents who had found your team. A couple of them managed to get a shot or two off, but Wanda easily blocked the rounds with her energy bubble.
While the others were occupied, you took the opportunity to slip into the lab so you could free Ryan and Bucky. Ducking bullets as you went, you briefly caught Natasha's eye when you rounded the corner. She gave you a quick nod before returning her attention to taking down the guard in front of her.
"James!" you exclaimed. You raced over to the contraption he was strapped into and frantically unbuckled the restraints. As soon as he was free, he swept you into his arms and engulfed you in a fierce embrace. You nearly melted at the feel of him finally in your arms, and Bucky was more than happy to hold your body against his.
Bucky pulled back a little then cradled your face in both of his hands and pulled you towards him. "Oh, sweetheart, what are you doing here?!? You should be back at the Tower, where it's safe! What were you thinking?!?" His fear and scolding quickly gave way to words of love, all delivered between fervent kisses. "I never thought I'd see you again, baby. I'm never letting you go again, my love, you belong with me."
"I'm sorry, James. I know you don't want me anywhere near here, but I couldn't let them do this to you. I had to help you, and I hope you can forgive me," you pleaded.
"No apologies needed, doll, and you are completely forgiven," Bucky replied. He pulled you in for one long, passionate kiss that he hoped conveyed how much he missed you.
The sound of someone slowly clapping hands in the background interrupted your reunion with Bucky. "Isn't this cozy, the Soldat and his Solnyshka," Zalinsky taunted. "You shouldn't have come back, my dear. Now I get to finish what I started with you," he threatened.
Before you or Bucky could respond, Loki appeared in the doorway, followed by Natasha and Wanda. The corridors were quiet, so you knew they had neutralized the threat. Now it was a matter of removing Ryan's restraints and making your way back to the safety of the quinjet.
"Looks like I have quite a few new test subjects. No matter, everyone can have a turn, but Solnyshka is first. She will be my greatest triumph," Zalinsky smirked as he drew a syringe from a pocket in his lab coat.
Instinctively, you stepped closer to Bucky's side, and in response he tightened his right arm around your shoulder. While you tried to think of a way to get to Ryan without causing harm to yourself or anyone else, you noticed a green mist appear at Zalinsky's feet. You watched as the green mist formed itself into a snake that began to coil its way around Zalinsky's body.
Zalinsky began to laugh despite his inability to move his feet. "Your pitiful attempts at magic do not scare me," he scoffed. After his outburst, a red mist appeared at his feet, also forming itself into a snake. It coiled around him in the opposite direction, then both snakes squeezed.
With Zalinsky's arms pinned next to his body, it was impossible for him to move, and he was forced to drop the syringe. The object shattered and the liquid created a puddle on the cement floor.
The two snake heads each bared their fangs and took turns snapping their jaws at Zalinsky. Each time, they came close to biting him, only for them to pull back at the last minute. You could see the fear in his eyes, despite his attempts to keep it from showing.
While the snakes were toying with Zalinsky, Natasha quickly released Ryan from his restraints. As soon as he was freed, he bolted out of the chair, then Natasha ushered him out the door. The two of them, plus Loki and Wanda started running for the exit. You and Bucky followed, his hand in yours as you both ran along the corridor towards your escape. "How long will the magic last?" you called.
"Hopefully long enough for us to get to the exit," Loki answered over his shoulder, to which Wanda nodded.
In your ear, you heard Tony tell Thor to fire up the quinjet so that it was ready to go once everyone was inside. He and Sam were waiting by the exit in case anyone was injured and needed to be airlifted to the jet.
You felt a shot whiz by your head, while another grazed your right arm, causing you to cry out in pain. Bucky's attention shifted to you, trying to figure out where you'd been hit. "It's okay, James, just grazed my arm," you gritted out. Blood started to drip down from the gash in your upper arm.
"FOOLS!! Did you think your magic was enough to stop me!!" Zalinsky roared as he released another round from his weapon. This time, you were hit in the back, just to the side of your right shoulder blade. You dropped to the floor from the force of the impact, which pulled on Bucky's hand and he could tell that this was more than a graze.
"Come on, sweetheart, we're almost there," Bucky coaxed, trying to help you up. You got to your feet and tried to run again, but the pain was too intense and you fell to your knees. Without a second thought, Bucky scooped you up into his arms and cradled you against his body. He took off at a run and quickly covered the now-short distance to the door leading to the outside world.
Once everyone was through the door, Bucky passed you off to Sam, who flew you to where the jet was ready and waiting. Bucky closed the giant, thick steel door with his super strength before Zalinsky could follow. With a blast from his Iron Man gauntlet, Tony melted the lock and fried any circuit boards contained within it, which kept Zalinsky from reopening the door.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
With everyone on board and accounted for, Tony worked the controls and the quinjet lifted off. Instead of turning back towards the compound, he maneuvered the aircraft so it was pointed at the base. He locked in a set of coordinates that were then fed to the missiles.
"Bit of unfinished business, if you don't mind," Tony explained with a smirk. He pressed the button on the control panel, which unleashed the missiles. Soon the HYDRA base became an enormous fireball, and when that cleared, all that could be seen was a pile of smoking concrete. He used the thermal recognition setting in his helmet to scan the area for survivors. When none were detected, Tony set course back to the Tower in New York.
As soon as Bucky was on board, he immediately made a beeline for you, where your wounds were being tended. The bullet graze on your arm was already cleaned up and bandaged by the time he got there. You were sitting sideways in a chair while the on-board medic was putting in the stitches on your shoulder wound.
Bucky pulled up a chair to sit on your left side, taking your hand in both of his. He pressed a lingering kiss to your left temple and closed his eyes. He took a deep breath, the scent of your strawberry shampoo invading his senses. "Sweetheart, I missed you so much," he murmured against your skin.
Tears began prickling your eyes before you responded, but had yet to fall. "I missed you too, James. I'm sorry for what happened that day before your mission. I should've waited to--" you started to say, but were interrupted.
"Baby, no. Listen, I handled that all wrong. I should've listened first and been more supportive of you wanting to help the team. You're smart, and I know you'll be great at COMMs, because you can do just about anything you set your mind to, darlin'. Besides, if I have to have anyone's voice in my ear, bossin' me around, I'd pick yours every time," he grinned and waggled his eyebrows.
You giggled at his comment about 'bossing him around'. "Thank you, James," you replied, your voice thick with emotion. The medic had already finished with your stitches and cleaned up the area.
As you looked around, the events of the day finally started to sink in. Bullets zinging in your direction. Getting shot twice. Sneaking down corridors of an enemy base, hoping to not get caught. Successfully rescuing your boyfriend. Tears were streaming down your face, but you didn't realize it until you saw Bucky's smile falter and he reached to brush them away.
"Solnyshka, what's wrong? Why the tears, my love?" Bucky asked as he carefully drew you into his arms. You pressed your ear to his chest so that you could hear his heartbeat, which provided some comfort to you. Bucky's whiskers tickled your scalp as he dropped kisses to the top of your head.
You lifted your head from his chest and tilted back a little so that you could lock onto his beautiful but troubled baby blues. "I'm okay. I think it took until now for everything to catch up to me," you chuckled nervously.
Bucky breathed a visible sigh of relief. "Well, once we get back to the Tower, we'll get cleaned up and change into comfy clothes. Then I'm going to hold you in my arms and never let go," he declared.
"Mmm, I like the sound of that," you whispered. "Um, there was something else, though. Something that's been on my mind a lot lately, James," you remarked.
"And what's that, sweet girl? Whatever it is, you know that you can tell me anything," he reminded you.
You nodded and took a deep breath before responding. "I....I love you, James. I can't believe it's taken me this long to tell you, because I've known it for a long time. And I'm not just saying it--" your speech was halted by Bucky's index finger on your lips.
"Darlin', love of mine, I love you too. I meant it when I told Zalinsky I would take your place, that I wouldn't let him harm the woman I love," Bucky explained. He tenderly grazed your cheeks with the back of his knuckles and gave you a small smile. Then he slid his hand around the back of your head and pulled you closer to him.
The brush of his lips against yours was tentative, almost like his apology for what happened between you before the mission. You showed him your acceptance by cradling his face in your left hand, caressing his scruffy cheek with your thumb before deepening the kiss in return. As his silky, plump lips moved in tandem with yours, his hands drifted down to your hips, pulling you closer.
When the kiss was broken, Bucky rested his forehead against yours, both of you panting heavily, trying to catch your breath. "I love you so much, doll. My heart is yours for the taking, although you've always had it, since the moment I met you," he smiled softly.
"You mean that day I was reading on my lunch break? I remember you startled me when you sneaked into my office," you teased. "Was that the moment? Or was it when you caught me 'dancing while filing'?" You smiled as your index finger delicately traced the sharp edge of his jawline while you waited for his response.
"All of it, sweetheart. Those certainly were some good moments, though," he chuckled. "You've always been that ray of sunshine I've needed in my life. That's why I call you my solnyshka," Bucky whispered.
You could feel the tears springing to your eyes at his heartfelt confession. Then you curled your hand around the back of Bucky's neck to tug him forward. "I love you so much, James," you replied with a watery smile and surged forward to meet his lips in a fiery kiss.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
When Steve got the notification, he rushed down to the hangar to greet the team. He greeted everyone with a handshake, high-five, or, in Tony's case, a quick nod as they disembarked. Bucky walked down the ramp with his arm around you and your bags in his left hand. You had your arm slung around his waist to keep close to him. Every few steps, Bucky would pause briefly to kiss you, and you couldn't help but grace him with a beaming smile.
Bucky eventually met Steve where he was waiting for the two of you. Steve crossed his arms over his chest and tried to look stern, but it was difficult in front of you and his best friend. You could see the corners of Steve's mouth trying not to twitch upwards in a smile.
Steve broke the stalemate first. "Buck," he remarked.
Bucky set down your bags and crossed his arms to mirror Steve's stance. "Stevie," he replied.
Steve's eyes flicked over to you. "Captain Rogers," you murmured.
By now, Steve was really having a tough time keeping a straight face. "Sunshine," he responded. That was all it took for the three of you to break out into laughter and take turns hugging Steve. "You doing okay? Heard you got injured, kid," he inquired.
"I'm all right, Cap. Got patched up on the way home, and James hasn't let me out of his sight since he got onboard the jet," you answered, then slipped your arm back around Bucky's waist.
"No way, doll. Hey, Stevie, I've got some makin' up to do with my girl, so if you don't mind," Bucky hinted.
"Get outta here, you two," Steve chuckled. He gave Bucky one last "welcome home" hug and you walked with Bucky to your shared room.
Right when you entered the room, a ball of white fur nearly tackled you and started rubbing up against your legs. "Well hello, pretty girl! It's so good to see you, did you behave for Peter while I was gone?" All answers to your questions resulted in loud purring coming from said feline, who was indeed happy to see you.
"Um, doll? Not to ask a dumb question, but when did we get a cat?" Bucky asked.
You grinned and motioned for him to sit beside you on the bed. Once he was seated, you explained how you found Alpine in the bushes outside of the Tower. You could see she was hurt, so you brought her inside.
"She told me her name, and that's how I found out what my powers were. I can communicate with animals and other creatures, as well as heal them. When I found her, Alpine had hurt her right front paw in some sort of alleyway scuffle. I treated her injury, and she's been my comfort while you were gone," you relayed softly.
As if on cue, Alpine leaped up on the bed so she could evaluate the newcomer, Bucky. If he was going to steal you away from her, Alpine wanted to check him out for herself. She placed her two front paws on his thigh and nuzzled at his hands in his lap. Bucky turned his right hand so it was palm up, so Alpine took the opportunity to sniff his hand. She stretched towards Bucky, still sniffing the air, then showed her approval by rubbing her face on his stubbled cheek.
Bucky laughed softly and started running his hand over her thick, white fur. "I guess that means she likes me, huh?" he asked.
"Of course she does, James. Besides, what's not to like, hmm?" you countered, then leaned your head on his shoulder. "I love you, James," you remarked.
"I love you too, Doll," he replied.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Six months later
"Has anyone seen James?" you asked. You had looked everywhere for him--the conference rooms, the gym, and you even had someone check the men's locker room. Now you were in the kitchen, asking if anyone knew the location of your wayward boyfriend. Everyone glanced around, knowing exactly where he was, but not being able to tell you. Not yet, anyway.
"Ooh! Have you checked your room yet?" Peter interjected.
"Not yet, Peter. Thank you, I'll check there," you answered. You left the kitchen and when you entered your room, there was a large white box with a red ribbon around it. A card was on top of the box, tented so that it stood upright. On the card were the words: "Meet me at 7:00pm in our favorite place to escape from everybody."
You searched your mind to think of the place Bucky was referring to, but when it clicked, you couldn't help but smile. When you opened the box, there was another card on top of something wrapped in tissue paper. It said, "Wear Me."
After you unwrapped the item, you pulled out a blue chiffon V-neck swing dress. It had short sleeves and wavy sequined lines running throughout the fabric, down to the knee-length hem. When you walked over to the mirror and held the dress up to your body, you couldn't wait to see it on yourself for real.
A quick glance at the clock showed it was 6:15pm, and you realized there wasn't much time to get ready. No way did you want to be late to meet Bucky, so you carefully laid the dress over the box and hurried to the bathroom to shower.
Thirty minutes later, and you were putting the finishing touches on your makeup and hair, both of which you kept simple. Just as you were ready to put on the dress, you heard a knock at your door. It was Wanda, and she asked to help you with the zipper. You suspected she had some idea of what Bucky was up to, but she refused to divulge any information.
Another knock at your door revealed Steve, who stated it was his duty to escort you to meet Bucky. As with Wanda, you figured he was part of the overall plan, but probably wouldn't tell you anything either. So you slipped your hand into the crook of his arm, and headed for the elevators.
Once you reached the rooftop, you were amazed at the sight in front of you. Off to one side was a small table with two chairs, a bouquet of assorted flowers in the center of the table. Twinkling fairy lights were strung together to create a canopy above the table. An ice bucket on a stand was waiting next to the table, the neck of a bottle sticking out of the top.
It was almost perfect. Almost. The only missing piece was Bucky, and he was nowhere to be seen, at least not at first. You walked to the railing on the roof and stared out across the city. So many lights filled the sky and so many sounds filled the air that you missed hearing Bucky's footsteps behind you.
"Good evening, my love," his rich baritone voice rumbled. You whirled around and when you saw Bucky, your breath was nearly stolen out of your chest. He was wearing black dress pants and a black jacket, with a white button-down shirt underneath. No tie, because the top two buttons were not fastened, giving you a glimpse of his broad chest. He was lazily holding a long-stemmed red rose and showed a gentle smile on his face.
"Whoa," you whispered, your feet taking slow, measured steps towards Bucky. "I knew I was dating a super soldier. Didn't know you were also a supermodel. You look handsome, James," you breathed.
"Awww, sweetheart. Wait, do I?" he asked while you nodded and walked towards him. "That's nothing compared to you, sweetheart. You look absolutely stunning, my darling," Bucky affirmed.
"Thank you," you murmured as your eyes roamed the setting Bucky had created on the rooftop. "You really did a wonderful job decorating up here. But I don't think it's our anniversary, and I know it's not my birthday. Am I missing something, James?" you asked.
Bucky picked up your left hand and cradled it gently in his vibranium one, then dropped to one knee before you. "My sweet solnyshka," he rasped. He cleared his throat before trying again. "Ever since we met, I knew you were going to be an important part of my life. And I was right, because you are exactly what I need and definitely more than what I deserve.
"You are everything to me. You are my best friend, my lover, my sunshine in what was such a dark world for me. The only thing that's missing is this," Bucky paused a moment to dig into his pocket with his right hand to produce a small, black box.
With shaking fingers, Bucky opened the box in your direction. Nestled inside the velvet cushion was a ring with an oval-shaped diamond and sapphire accent stones. The white gold band had elegant scroll work engraved on the top half of the band. "Oh, James. It's beautiful," you remarked in a voice thick with emotion.
Bucky reached inside and plucked the ring from its box and held it out to you. "I know that I have a lot of history that comes with me, and I can't promise we will always be free of danger. But as long as we're together, we can get through anything. Will you marry me?" he asked.
By this time, tears are streaming down your face, but they are tears of joy. "Yes, James, I will absolutely marry you," you exclaimed as you flung your arms around his neck.
Bucky wound his arms around you, holding you to his chest as he stood. After a long passionate kiss that took your breath away, he set you on your feet. The ring was still in his right hand, his left one holding yours steady while he slid the ring on your finger. Bucky raised your left hand to his lips and kissed the back of it. "I am so in love with you," he declared.
"I am so in love with you, too. Kinda great that it works out that way, huh? Because you're stuck with me for life," you chuckled lightly.
"I wouldn't have it any other way, my love," Bucky replied as he rested his forehead on yours. "I love you, future Mrs. Barnes."
"And I love you, Mr. Barnes," you responded.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
A month later, Natasha and Wanda were in your room, helping you decide on bridesmaid dresses. You were laughing with the girls at some of the more ridiculous dress styles, assuring them that you would never make them wear something like that. Bucky and Steve were down in the lobby, holding a small press conference, when FRIDAY broke through on the intercom.
"Excuse me, miss, but there are two visitors waiting in the lobby at Security for you. They are quite insistent and are refusing to leave until they see you," the AI relayed.
You looked at Nat and Wanda in confusion, because you had no idea who would be visiting you at the Tower. "I'll be right back," you remarked absently. You got up from your bed and slipped on your shoes, with your friends hot on your heels.
"Who do you think it is?" Wanda asked.
"I have no idea, Wanda. My parents are gone, no siblings, and the only friends I have are all here, in the Tower. Guess I'll find out in a few minutes, though," you shrugged.
The elevator doors opened and the three of you exited towards the lobby. You were all laughing at something one of you said on the way down about ideas for a bachelorette party. After turning the corner, Nat assured you, "Don't worry, if it's trouble, we've got your back."
You caught a glimpse of flannel, bringing you to a complete stop in your tracks. "No....," you whispered. Wanda and Natasha looked at each other and shrugged, neither knowing what to make of your reaction. "Oh, it's trouble, Nat," you growled then resumed your path to Security. Your friends followed for your protection and out of sheer curiosity.
With arms folded across your chest and fire in your eyes, you addressed your visitors. "What the hell are you doing here, Winchester?!?"

Next thing he knows, Bucky Barnes is opening his eyes in the 21st century, which is full of great gadgets and coffee, and at least includes his old pal Steve. (And, inexplicably, a different Stark.) Meanwhile, the Winter Soldier finds himself in the middle of World War Two, helping Captain America hunt down HYDRA (which is at least familiar), pretending to be Bucky Barnes (which is not), and figuring out the very noisy group of soldiers who call themselves the Howling Commandos.
Truth, Justice, and the Cheating Cheater Way (ao3) - owlet peggy/steve T, 4k
Summary: Don't play cards with Captain America. Just don't. Especially if you've pissed him off recently.

Firehouse Noir
by ChrissiHR
Tap, tap, tap.
Darcy glanced up from her ledger at the rapid tattoo of fingernails on her storefront window.
“Business or pleasure, Fire Marshal Barnes?” she asked in a teasing voice when she stepped out to join him.
Bucky gave her a wan smile and opened his mouth to speak, but—
“Fuckin’ embarrassin’ is what it is,” Clint grumbled from his spot across the wide stretch of lawn, where he stood, hands on hips, scowling up into the deep red canopy of leaves of the old Japanese maple that shaded their little corner of the block.

Masterlist
Steve had hidden away in a stairwell, he had a small sketchbook and pencil he always brought to these things and he was currently distracting himself by drawing. He can hear your footsteps before you stop at the door and push it open.
“Hey Sunny.” He says without looking up.
“One of these days I’m going to catch you off guard.”
“Never.” He says with a smile.
“We’ll see about that.” You sigh. “Come on Cap, they’re ready for you.”
“Why do I still have to do these interviews?”
“I know you hate these things and I made sure to make them as short as possible but people love learning about the avengers. This is the last one I promise.” You move to open the door looking over your shoulder. You see him staring at his sketchbook. “Are you drawing your girl again?”
He nods. “Yeah, she’s the only one that keeps me sane.” He says as he gets up.
“When are you going to let me see those sketches?”
“They aren’t ready yet.” He says as he gets up and follows you out of the stairwell.
“These are the questions that I approved.” You give him a set of flash cards. “They should stick with them but you know what to do if they ask you something you aren’t comfortable answering. The reporter interviewing you is new, her name is Roxie Sanders.”
He nods as he goes through the cards.
The interview goes well, the reporter asking all the questions on the flash cards and Steve answers everyone of them with his Captain America charm.
“Just one more question, Captain.” The reporter looked hopeful and Steve, being a gentleman, gave a small nod.
“Rumor has it that you’re still single. Is that true, or has someone caught your eye? Do you have any plans to settle down with a future Mrs. America?” She asks.
“I-um.” He swallows thickly before his eyes flick from the reporter to you and back.
“Cut. We’re done here.” You say as the cameraman stops recording, you make your way to both of them. “Steve, you're good to go. This was the last interview of the day.”
“Y/N.” He calls out almost as a warning.
“Captain.” matching his tone.
He can see you’re furious and honestly he’s afraid you’ll make the reporter cry but he’d rather you not be mad at him so he gets up and leaves.
He’s out of the interview room immediately but stays close by. He can’t help the smile that graces his lips as he hears you get protective over him. You’re in there for a few minutes before he hears you telling the reporter that if she ever wants to work with the Avengers again she’ll stick to the approved questions.
His head tilts to the side when he hears the door open and shut as you walk towards him.
“Did you make her cry?”
“I didn’t make her cry. I’m just tired of going over this every single time. We have made it clear with the stations, magazines and newspaper that each member of the Avenger’s team has certain topics that you will not be answering. I get it’s their jobs but we have set limits and they need to respect that. She knew better.” You shrug as you both head towards the elevator.
“Ok tiger. Come on, let's get dinner. My treat.” Steve looks at you and smiles.
“Oh actually I can’t tonight. Rain check?”
“Sure. girls night with Nat and Pepper?”
“No, I actually have a date.” You smile up at him obviously excited. But his world might as well have stopped turning. You on a date.
“You ok there Cap?” You look up at him, slightly worried at the shift in his mood.
“Yeah,” he clears his throat. “I’m good.”
There’s silence while the elevator goes up towards the floor your offices are at.
“So a date. Do I know him?”
“No, he’s a friend of a friend.”
“Wait, do you know him?”
“We’ve been texting and Nat did a background check on him the minute I told her about it. He seems legit.” You step out of the elevator and head to your office which is right across from Steve’s.
“If you need anything, call me ok. And text me when you get home so I know you’re safe.”
“Of course. Thank you Stevie, have a good night.” You say as you grab your things and head out.
Steve stays in his office the rest of the evening, trying to keep himself busy and not think about the fact that you’re out with someone else. It doesn’t take long for Bucky to show up at the office looking for him.
“Hey Punk, what are you still doing here?” He asks as he turns to your office expecting your light to be on. Knowing that Steve usually stays if you’re still in too.
“I was just finishing up some reports and looking over some upcoming missions. Trying to plan ahead, you know.” He says without looking up.
“And it has nothing to do with the fact that Y/N is on a date?” Nat says as she appears by Bucky. She walks past him and sits in one of the chairs across from Steve.
“Oh for fucks sake. Steve, you said you were going to ask her out. What happened?”
“He choked like he always does.” Nat answers.
“That’s enough. She’s on one date; it's not like she’s going to marry him. For all you know the date could go horribly wrong.”
“Knowing Y/N he’ll propose by the end of the night. Shit I thought about it when I first met her.” Bucky says with a smirk.
“Me too.” Nat adds.
“Me three, what are we talking about?” Sam asks as he stands in the doorway with Bucky.
“Nothing.” Steve is already annoyed at two of his friends, knowing Sam will have something to add.
“Why are you here if the boss isn’t?”  He points back at your office over his shoulder.
You started working with Steve and Nat after the battle of New York. It was a huge ordeal when the whole winter soldier fiasco happened but you handled it beautifully. So it made sense to Tony that you would take on Sam and Bucky when they joined. You were fiercely protective over them and if they were honest the 3 men were kind of afraid of you. They would do whatever you asked so they appropriately nicknamed you boss.
“She’s on a date and he’s upset because someone beat him to it.” Bucky fills Sam in on the situation.
“Damn that sucks. You said you were going to ask her out what happened?” He asks as he takes the other chair in his office.
“Can we change the subject? I’m not upset, she’s a grown woman and she can go out with whoever she wants.”
“Ok man, but it’s already late, why don’t we go do something.” Sam knows when to push and tease Steve but he also knows that you are a sensitive subject for him.
Reluctantly Steve gets up and follows his friends up to the shared living room. They try to distract him but it’s useless. His thoughts are filled with you. He didn’t know why he hadn’t asked you out, part of him was scared that you’d reject him and laugh in his face. To him you’re perfect and he doesn’t think he deserves even an ounce of your affection.
His phone vibrates in his pocket.
Y/N: I’m home! ☺️☺️
Steve: Good, sweet dreams Sunny.
Y/N: Good night Stevie. See you tomorrow.
“Alright I’m going to bed.” Steve suddenly announces.
“Good she’s home. Night Steve.” Bucky says followed by Nat and Sam.
Steve is restless the rest of the night. He can only hope that the date didn’t go well and he still has a chance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Steve was in his office earlier than usual, after a restless night he worked out and decided to start his work for the day. He was also anxiously awaiting your arrival with hopes that you would tell him how horrible the date was and then he could swoop in and show you how it was really done. But he wouldn’t be so lucky. He could hear you and Nat talking as you made your way through the hallway. You were happy and he knew then that it was the beginning of losing you.
“Good morning Stevie. I got this for you.” You hold up a coffee cup for him to see before setting it in front of him on the desk.
“Thanks Sunny but you didn’t have to do that.” He offers a small smile.
“I know but I felt bad about yesterday.”
“Don’t worry about it. So how did it go?” He couldn’t understand why he would torture himself like that and then he saw it. The way your eyes lit up and the blinding smile that he loved so much.
“It went really well. We might go out again this weekend.”
“That’s good.” He nods.
“Yeah, he was sweet. I really like him.”
“Well as long as he treats you right. But if he tries anything I’ll kick his ass.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.” You chuckle. “I’ll see you later for that one meeting, ok.”
Steve just nods and stares down at his work. He wants nothing more than for you to be happy. He just wanted it to be him that did that, he wanted to be the reason for your smile. He wanted to know what it felt like to wake up and see you first thing in the morning and for you to be the last thing he saw when he went to sleep. Steve just wanted you to be the one he shared his life with.
Now he just feels like you’re slipping through his fingers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s been weeks since you went on that date with whatever his name was, Steve really didn’t care to learn his name. He was miserable, you were definitely happier and every time you spoke about him it was like you stepped on his already broken heart. But Steve being Steve he couldn’t just ask you to stop talking about your boyfriend, it would make you question him and he certainly couldn’t just tell you how head over heels in love he was with you. So he powered through it. The team was no help; they seemed to enjoy teasing him and pointing out how he missed his shot to be with you.
The few weeks turned into months and he knew that if he couldn’t have you he would rather be alone. It didn’t help that since you had started dating him you spent less time with Steve. Before you would grab drinks or dinner together after work. If you knew he’d been on a particularly difficult mission you’d show up to his apartment in the tower and just spend time with him. Not saying a word, just keeping him company until he was ready to talk. Even at the beginning when you had first met and he was having nightmares you had insisted that he called you if he couldn’t sleep. At first he felt guilty but you always assured him that it was ok and that you would always be there for him.
But that had been years ago and now you were walking around one of Tony’s parties introducing your boyfriend to the team. That was a first, you’d never brought a significant other to one of these even when he knew you were dating. He didn’t know what he hated more, the fact that the team kept sending him sympathetic glances and smiles or the fact that he was touching you. Steve hated seeing his hands on you. He stayed glued to the corner of the bar and once again he wished he could get drunk. Unfortunately Thor was off-world and couldn’t give him any Asguardian mead to help with this feeling of loss he’d had since you told him you were officially in a relationship.
Steve had managed to sneak out of the party and was at the elevator when he heard your voice.
“Steve, are you leaving already?” You asked as you got closer.
“Yeah. I’m tired from the mission and don’t really feel like celebrating.” He said as he turned to look at you.
“Oh, ok good night I guess.” You said with a hint of sadness in your voice. He quickly grabs your hand and pulls you closer.
“Is everything ok?”
“Yeah, I just wanted- you know what nevermind. You need to rest.”
“Sunny you can tell me anything.”
“I just wanted to introduce you to Jason. But it’s not important. I can introduce you some other time.” You smile as you turn but he again pulls you by your hand.
“No it’s ok if it’s important to you I’ll meet him.”
“Are you sure? You can say no.”
He shakes his head. “Lead the way.” He lets you pull him along and walk through the sea of people that always show up to these parties until you come to a stop where Nat and Bucky were talking to your boyfriend.
Nat was the first to look your way which made your boyfriend turn around. That gave Bucky the opportunity to roll his eyes, letting Steve know he didn’t like the guy. He stood right by you, as close as possible without making you uncomfortable which you never seemed to be. At all of these events the two of you seemed to gravitate towards each other. You never noticed and no one ever pointed it out, they were secretly hoping you and Steve would end up together.
“Baby, I’d like you to meet Steve. Steve, this is my boyfriend Jason.”
“What an honor to meet you, Captain.” Jason states as he stretches his hand out for Steve to shake.
“Good to meet you too.” Steve shakes his hand and grips a little bit too hard. There is a bit of awkward silence between the five of you even with the music and the chatter going on around.
“I’m gonna go get a new drink. Anyone want a refill?” You ask the group but they either lift their still filled glasses or give you a no.
“Steve, I'll bring you something.” You say as you start turning.
“Thanks Sunny.” He calls out.
“Sunny?” Jason asks as he looks between Steve and you.
“It’s a nickname, you know, like Sunshine. I just call her Sunny.”
“Isn’t it a bit inappropriate since you work together?” He was slightly irritated at the friendship it seemed but Steve couldn’t care less. He actually smiled a little now that he knew he could use his friendship with you to annoy Jason.
“We’re just friends, I call her babe sometimes. Is that a problem?” Nat adds, smirking at the man that’s giving her a pointed look.
 “Yes it is. I don’t like other men getting that close to my girlfriend.”
“Feeling insecure about something?” Bucky
Jason opened his mouth to say something but you showed up before he could respond.
“Here you go Stevie.” You hand him his usual drink and turn to the group. “What did I miss?”
“Nothing, babe.” Nat says before a mischievous grin adorns her face.
“Some of the couches freed up, let's go.” Bucky points out and you all make your way to it as quickly as possible. You ended up seated between Steve and Jason, the latter keeping a hand on your knee as if he was claiming you. The three Avengers looked between one another silently agreeing that they didn’t really like Jason, but they would tolerate his presence if you were dating him.
Before they even realize it you excuse yourself and Jason for the evening which leaves Nat, Bucky and Steve alone before the rest of the team joins them.
“So,” Tony says, extending the ‘o’ for longer than necessary. “What are our thoughts on what’s his face?”
“He’s nice to look at but that's about it.” Maria says from her spot on the floor.
“I agree. He isn’t that interesting but he’s cute.”
“Pepper, why are you looking? I’m both cute and interesting. You don’t need anyone else.”  Tony exclaims, causing the team to laugh at the exchange.
“He’s a jerk, and cocky. I don’t like him.” Clint adds
“So the consensus is that we don’t like him? Should we break them up? I think our Boss deserves better.”
”That’s enough. Sam, do you even hear what you’re saying? If she likes him, let her be happy.”
Bucky groans, “Of course you would be the one to not want them to break up you punk.”
“I want her to be happy more than anything. Is that so hard to understand? Drop the idea of trying to break them up. I’ve had enough of this night. I'm going to bed.” Steve excuses himself and heads out. Leaving the team looking at each other concerned for their friends. They had all agreed that the two of you were made for each other; they just couldn’t understand how you hadn’t seen it. It was so obvious it hurt to watch.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You started to bring Jason around more, a fact that Steve found extremely annoying. Now not only did he have to hear about him but he had to see him if the team had a movie night or decided to go out to dinner.
It was at those times when he was walking behind the rest of the team through the restaurant, tracking your every movement and listening to how you called out for Jason. The way you held his hand or grabbed his arm that he truly regretted not telling you of his feelings. After one of these outings he found himself so close to telling you to leave Jason and give him a chance.
He almost confessed his love for you one night while you were both still working and you confronted him about him being distant. The look you gave him when you told him you missed him because of it. So when you brought Jason around to hang out with some of them he tried, just to make you happy. Steve started hanging out with you again. Until the day Jason showed up at your job, Steve had invited you to lunch so he was wrapping up a call and you had stepped out of your office for a moment. The knock at your office door is what made Steve lookup.
“She stepped out for a moment.” Steve says as he gets up from his desk and stands at the doorway.
“Do you know how long she’s going to be out?”
“Shouldn’t be long we were just going to head out to lunch.”
“Oh well I was going to surprise her with lunch today so.” Jason shrugged and waited for Steve to back out of his lunch with you and got irritated when he didn’t.
Instead he just hummed and crossed his arms as he leaned into the doorframe.
“Well I’m taking Y/N to lunch. I guess you’ll have to go some other time.”
“Or we can wait until she comes back and she can decide.”
“Listen, I’m not stupid.” Jason said as he walked toward Steve. “I know you have a thing for her and I don’t appreciate you getting in the way of our relationship.”
“I’m not getting in the way of anything, we are just friends.” Steve fires back. He could already hear you getting closer, thankful for his enhanced hearing.
“You better back off and leave her alone. I’m warning you right now I’m not going to allow whatever-“ Jason stops when he sees you rounding the corner.
“Jason? What are you doing here?”
“I wanted to surprise you.” He says as he brings you into a hug, looking right at Steve as he smirks. Earning a glare from the super soldier.
“What do you say we go out for lunch?”
“I can’t,” Steve, who had turned away from the show your boyfriend was putting on, smiled thinking you had chosen to go out with him instead. “I am being pulled into a meeting. It starts in 15. I just came by to get some documents from my office and tell Steve, since we had plans for lunch.”
“Maybe next time then.” Jason connects his lips to yours, a show of possessiveness you didn’t like and you cut it short.
“Steve you’ll be needed too, I’ll save you a seat. Bye babe.” You go into your office, grab some files and head down the hallway.
“Bye, Jason.” Steve says and heads the same way you did.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nat: Mission failed Steve and Bucky are in the hospital.
Y/N: How bad?
Nat: Worse than D.C.
When you read that your heart dropped and it must have shown because Jason was asking what was wrong but you couldn’t focus on him. You needed to see him. To make sure Steve would pull through. You had just gotten home from the restaurant and you excused yourself, knowing that Jason would get mad. There would be a fight in the near future about how you would always cancel plans in order to be with Steve but you couldn’t be bothered to think of Jason’s feelings when Steve was in a hospital bed unconscious. So you rushed to his side in the black dress and heels you had been wearing for your date.
Seeing him injured never got easier, you’re always worried that this will be the last time or that he won’t pull through and the thought of not having Steve in your life is the scariest thing you never want to face.
When you get to the hospital floor of the tower Nat is there waiting.
“Any news?”
“Bucky woke up but nothing on Steve yet.” Nat informs you, her expression neutral but you’ve known her long enough to know she’s scared to lose her friend. You walk over to her and give a hug.
“Go change, I'll stay here. I’ll let you know if anything changes.”
“Ok.” Nat heads towards the elevators and you sit waiting to see if you could be with Steve.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hours later Steve finally begins to wake up. He blinks a few times as he tries to remember what happened and take in his surroundings. After a quick scan of the room his eyes fall on you with your back to him and talking on the phone. He groans as he tries to sit up a little bit. You turn when you hear him.
“He just woke up, I’ll talk to you later.” you put the phone in the pocket of your hoodie as you make your way over to him and sit on the edge of the bed. “How are you feeling, do you want me to get the doctor for you?”
“No, I’ll be fine.” his voice hoarse from disuse. When he said that the tears that you had been holding back started to fall.
“I was so scared.”
“Hey, I’m ok. A few days and I won’t even have a scratch on me.”
“It’s been days and We didn’t know if you would wake up.” you say as you wring your hands. Steve places one of his over yours and gives you a little squeeze.
“I’m not going anywhere any time soon ok?” he reassures you with a smile.
“Ok.” You say as you move to hold his hand, the morning sun filtering through the windows hits your hand and Steve’s attention is captured by the flash of light reflected back to him.The last bit of hope he had to tell you how he felt is extinguished when he lifts your left hand to find a ring. You pull your hand back and hide it in the pocket of your hoodie.
You start to say something but a nurse walks in to complete the morning checks, when she sees that Steve is awake she gets the doctor. You excuse yourself to give him home privacy and to let the team know that he’s awake.
A few minutes later Nat, Sam and Bucky walk in to find Steve sitting at the edge of the bed staring out of the window, deep in thought.
“Steve?” Bucky takes a seat on the bed next to him, pulling him out of whatever he was thinking of.
“You ok?”
“She’s engaged.”
“What?” They say in unison.
“Y/N is engaged.”
“I think you might have hit your head harder than we thought man. Y/N hasn’t said anything.” Sam countered.
“I saw the ring, and when I did she hid her hand like she didn’t want me to see it.”
A silence settled amongst the four friends. There was nothing they could say to make the situation better but they could see his heart break. Bucky put his hand on Steve’s shoulder for a moment before getting up, excusing himself and walking out followed by Sam and Nat. They knew when he needed some time alone. Steve sat there, in the hospital room silently berating himself for screwing up what he thought was his second chance at happiness. Now it was too late, he made his choice at that moment to put some distance between you and himself. You were his best friend and at some point he would be happy for you but he couldn’t, not at this moment. He couldn’t torture himself by watching you love another man up close.
“Yeah… I will. Love you too. Ok, bye.” You hung up the phone. Looking over your shoulder when you heard footsteps. “Hey Nat, what’s up?” You asked as you stifled a yawn, anyone that looked at you could tell you were exhausted .
“Congratulations on your engagement.”
You brows knit together in confusion as you look at the redhead. “Wha- how did you know?”
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
“What was I supposed to do? Come in and say ‘hey I know Steve and Bucky are hurt but look I’m engaged?’
“When did he ask?”
“The night of the mission.” You look down at your ring, you cared for Jason but after thinking you were going to lose Steve you doubted just for a moment if it was the right choice. You look back up at Nat you weren’t sure what you were expecting but the frown she was sporting wasn’t it.
“And you’re happy?”
“Yeah, I am.” You hesitated when you answered and she noticed. “Why?”
“We’re friends right?”
“Of course we are.”
“I don’t think he’s right for you.”
“What?” you stare at her wide eyed. Taken aback by her statement.
“Look, I should have said something sooner but I don’t think Jason is the one. He’s unpleasant to be around and honestly we just deal with him because he’s dating you.”
An uncomfortable silence falls between both of you. “I’m going to go home and get some things now that he’s up.” you inform her doing whatever you could to end this conversation.
“Ok.”
You knew Jason wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea but you didn’t think he was that bad. Maybe you still hadn’t seen his true colors because you knew Nat wouldn’t say something to hurt your relationship. This made you question if saying yes was the right thing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following weeks were a blur. Steve did everything in his power to keep some distance, his friends insisted he tell you the truth but he was the one that sat across the hallway from your office. He could hear the excitement when you were talking to others about the wedding you had started to plan. Steve knew he couldn’t do that to you so he took on more missions and scheduled more time to train recruits. He also declined interviews so that he wouldn’t have to be around you. Again you had confronted him about it, the distance between you but this time he didn’t cave. Instead he explained it away saying he was just busy.
He also did the one thing he promised himself he wouldn’t do, let Tony set him up on a date. Several actually, but they never worked out. Steve tried, he was a gentleman and they were nice and attractive women but they weren’t you. No one would ever compare and he was slowly starting to come to terms with that maybe he just wasn’t meant to have a happily ever after.
“Are you ok?” He hears you behind him.
“Yeah I’m fine, why?” he asks as he continues to look out towards the city, his arms resting on the railing.
“Well I never thought I’d say this but Bucky is being more social than you are. You’ve been out here almost the whole time.”
“I’m just tired and there are a lot of people.” He shrugs slightly, his back still towards you.
“Come on Stevie, something is going on and we never keep things from each other.”
He lets his head drop for a moment before taking a deep breath and turns to you.
The worried expression that he had seen so many times over the years was etched on your face yet again because of him and it wasn’t fair to you that he was ruining your engagement party. Steve closes the gap and takes your hands in his.
“Does he make you happy?” The words escape his lips before he’s able to stop them.
“Yes.” You hesitate for just a moment as you see sadness and resignation reflect in Steve’s eyes.
“That’s all I want for you Y/N.”
“Steve-” you’re cut off by the door opening, the music loud and overwhelming, you’re barely able to hear what Jason is saying. Steve takes it as his chance to get away, it was a mistake to come here and he knows it. He walks right by Jason, not bothering to excuse himself as he pushes his way through the crowded venue.
“Is everything ok?” Jason asks as he gets closer to you.
“Yeah, he was just saying goodbye. He's been on a lot of missions so he’s tired.”
“Oh, well the presence of my fiancee is being requested back inside.” He kisses your cheek before taking your hand and leading you back inside.
The rest of the night is spent with friends and family celebrating you and Jason, but every now and then you scan the room trying to find Steve before you remember that he left. Now you look for Bucky.
“Here comes the bride.” he announces to Nat and Sam who had their back to you.
“Hey, have any of you heard from Steve?”
“He’s out on the balcony.” Sam says.
“No, he left a while ago.”
“Oh, well he’s probably just ups-”
“Just tired, he’s been on a lot of missions recently.” Nat cuts Bucky off.
“It’s what he told me but… He’s been acting weird lately, I’m just worried about him.”
“That mission a few weeks ago affected him more than he let on.” Sam tries to ease your worry.
“I guess. If you hear from him will you let me know? I just want to know he’s ok.”
“Will do boss.” Bucky says as you turn back to rejoin Jason.
“We have to do something. Look at her, she’s more worried about Steve during her own engagement party than she is about her fiance.”
“Steve had his chance to ask her out multiple times, it’s not fair to her to ruin her relationship.” Nat argues.
“Sam?” Bucky looks at him expecting to have someone on his side.
“Listen they are the definition of idiots in love but do you think they would be ok with us meddling in their non-relationship? I know Steve would be mad if we tried to break up her relationship with Jason.”
Bucky lets out a frustrated groan. “So are we just supposed to watch both of them be unhappy?”
“Just a little longer. I don’t think she’ll go through with the wedding and we have to be ready for when it happens.”
“What did you have in mind, Red?”
“I’ll tell you back at the tower. I’ll need your help.” Nat responds with a smirk.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Between work and planning a wedding you lost track of time. Your schedule was a mixture of dress fittings and looking at venues, choosing flowers, making a guest list, sending out the invitations and the menu all in between handling four Avengers. And you did all of it alone, with Jason saying he didn’t have time for any of the wedding planning, he stepped back completely and let you deal with everything on your own. That had caused the arguments between the two of you and you had found yourself staying at the room in the tower Tony had given you instead of going to your shared home with Jason. You attributed these arguments to the stress of it all instead of him stepping back and making you deal with all of it.
Before you knew it your bachelorette party came and went and so did your rehearsal dinner. The night before the wedding the nerves took over. For the first time since saying yes, doubt was taking over your mind. Although everyone you loved would be there to support you, well almost everyone, there was something about Steve not attending the wedding that made you sad. You two were still friends but something had changed. He had changed. He would smile but his eyes didn’t light up like they used to and you missed that. Whenever there were team hang outs he wouldn’t really interact with anyone, instead he sat to the side. The only thing that was consistent was his missions. Steve would go on back to back missions until you would stop him and force him to take some time away.
The morning snuck up on you, there was a ball of nerves in the pit of your stomach but there was no time to dwell on the feeling since you had to leave immediately to the venue. Your mom and grandmother assured you that once you were on the altar staring at the love of your life those nerves would disappear. The issue was that instead of picturing Jason in his tux you instead thought of a certain blonde-haired blue-eyed super soldier.
Your hair was done, pulled up and away from your face. The make-up artist finished touching up the bridesmaids and your dress was being zipped up by your mom. All of the jewelry was on and your heels were sitting by the door. You had asked for a moment to yourself and everyone left the room, you looked out of the window in hopes to get a glimpse of the last minute guests that arrived. There was a small piece of you that wished you could see Steve, maybe if he was there you could be sure that you weren’t in fact in love with him but instead just missed your friend. But he wouldn’t be there, he told you as much. There was a soft knock on the door before it opened. You turned in time to see Nat walk in and close the door behind her.
“Hey, 5 minutes and we have to head down.”
“Ok, thanks Nat.” You smiled at your maid of honor.
“Do you have everything?”
“What?” you looked at her confused.
“Something old, something new… you know?”
“Oh well, I have the earrings which are old. My dress is something new. My heels are something blue and well, I don't know about something borrowed.”
“Good, I have just the thing for you.” She opens her bag and hands it over. Your eyes go wide.
“Nat…”
She smiles at you before lifting her hand to her ear. “Down in 5.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Steve sat on the couch of his apartment in the tower. The invitation to your wedding in his hand mocking him. It could have been his name on the invitation and by the end of the day you would have been his wife. Now he sat alone, wishing for the comfort that only you could give him. There would be things in his life that he would have to live with like not jumping after Bucky when he fell from the train, but losing you entirely was not something he wasn’t ready to face. It was enough that Steve had to work alongside you but to watch you plan the beginning of the rest of your life loving someone else was too much to handle.
After sitting there for most of the morning he decided that he couldn’t watch you marry someone that didn’t appreciate you the way you deserved. He got up from the couch, got dressed and headed out the door with the invitation in hand. Steve hoped it wasn’t too late and that he could at least tell you how he felt even if it made him look like a selfish ass for waiting so long. If there was a chance that you loved him the way he did you, he had to know.
Steve pressed the elevator button down multiple times as he waited. He took a deep breath as he heard the ding and the doors slid open. His eyes wide as he looked up seeing you standing there, the train to your wedding dress wrapped up in your hands. Steve was sure you had never looked more beautiful.
“I told you I would catch you off guard one day.” you said as you with a small smile but it was clear that you had been crying. You walk out of the elevator and stand in front of Steve.
“What are you doing here?” he asked but part of him was dreading the answer.
“Well you see there is a tradition for brides on wedding days. Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. The problem was that my something borrowed wasn’t really borrowed but stolen.”  You let the train of your dress fall and in your hand you held the sketchbook he always had with him.
“Y/N I can-”
“Why didn’t you say anything?” you ask as you flip through the pages that held the sketches he had made of you. There were little notes on the edges of the pages, some had the dates, others things he wanted to say to you and so on.
“It was so easy to fall for you so easy it was scary. I mean you are kind, smart, selfless and you are so damn beautiful and I’m just me. I was afraid you would reject me and I don’t think I could handle that.”
You cupped his cheek, your thumb moving back and forth and he closed his eyes at the contact. “But that’s exactly why I fell for you, because you are just Steve.” His eyes snapped open full of love and relief. A look that was reflected back to him in your own eyes. His hands find their way to your waist and he pulls you closer to him.
“Are you sure?” he asked.
“I wouldn’t have left my wedding if I wasn’t.” His lips meet yours in a soft and sweet kiss. Your hand moves from his cheek to his neck to deepen it while he pulls you flush against him. Years of lost time and affection are poured into it and it has you both reeling. You pull back once the need for air is more than you can handle and his lips chase yours. The act makes you giggle.
“I’ve missed you.”
“Me too, Sunny.” He gives you another quick kiss.
“We still have a lot to talk about, but first I need to get out of this dress. I’ll be right back.”
**************
Steve had gone back to his apartment and changed into something comfortable while he waited for you to come back up. He turned his attention towards the door when he heard it open, chuckling when he saw your Captain America t-shirt.
“Shut up, most of my clothes are back at the apartment.”
“Oh come on I’m not making fun of you. You just look cute in my t-shirt.” he grins at you and you can’t help but smile back.
“We should talk.”
“Yeah, let's sit. Do you want something to drink?”
“No, I'm good.” you say as you move around the couch and take a seat. Turning your body toward the spot Steve is going to sit at, your arm resting on the backrest. He mimics your sitting position and he intertwines his fingers with yours. “So…”
You spent the rest of the day talking. It started with you explaining how you got the sketchbook, Jason’s reaction to you calling off the wedding. He was angrier with the fact that you were choosing Steve than you not getting married at all. Steve tells you about the time he realized that he was in love with you.
“I’m sorry for not telling you that I loved you when I knew.”
“Me too. But I think that we need a little bit of time before we start dating.”
“I can wait a little longer.” he smiles at you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“One more question, Captain.” Roxie asks.
“Of course.”
“You recently got married and I want to start by saying congratulations on that.”
“Thank you.”
“I asked you a long time ago if you had any plans to settle down. Now that you have, are there any plans to start a family any time soon?”
Steve smiles at her. “We aren’t really sure, how about you ask in another few months.”
“I sure will. Thank you again Captain, it's always a pleasure.”
“Thank you, Roxie.”
“Cut.” Someone yells behind the camera. Steve stands and shakes hands with Roxie before walking around the equipment to find you typing away on your phone.
“Let’s get out of here Sunny.”
“Thank god I’m so tired.” you smile as you intertwine your fingers with his and head out of the interview rooms Tony set up in the tower and get into the elevator.
“Don’t think I didn’t notice what you said at the end there.”
“What?”
“To ask in another few months if we were going to start a family.”
“Well technically we are.” He says as he stands behind you, wrapping his arms around your waist and letting his hands rest on your swollen belly concealed by the cardigan you had chosen to wear.
“She’s going to flip when she realizes you technically gave her an exclusive.”
“I had to make it up to her for that time you made her cry.”
“I did not make her cry.” you defend yourself while he laughs. The doors open and you walk hand in hand out of the elevator until you reach your shared apartment.
You both changed and settled on the couch, you lay with your back against his chest and your head on his shoulder as some random tv show plays. Since the moment you told him you were pregnant he loved laying like this just so that he could place his hand on your small bump, he said that this way he could wrap his arms around his whole world. It was these moments which always had you wondering about how your life would have turned out if you had stayed with Jason.
But you wouldn’t change anything about the last two years of your life because they had been the best. Once Steve actually asked you out you both realized how dumb it was to have waited so long. Loving and being loved by Steve was the easiest thing in the world considering you had been doing it since before you were aware that it was love.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
By the time you and Bucky had joined the gala, it was nearly in full swing. You saw the usual crowd of CEOs and other executives with their wives in attendance, along with some government officials. Some were dancing, others were hanging out at the bar, the buffet table, or bending Tony's ear about something.
Every once in a while, you checked in with your team members through your earpiece to determine if Dazon had made an appearance. So far, no one had seen him, but you knew it was only a matter of time before he showed up. Until then, you'd have to remain on your guard and ready for pretty much anything.
A little over an hour after you and Bucky arrived, you were coming back to the table when you spotted Dazon at the ballroom entrance. He was flanked by the same two bodyguards that had stopped you, Natasha and Wanda outside the clothing store a few days ago. "Heads up, everyone, the Eagle has landed," you murmured into your earpiece.
"Do not engage, repeat, do not engage," Dean commanded. "You're the one he's after, and you need to stay out of his sight," he added.
"Acknowledged, Dean. I'm not going to do anything to make things worse," you retorted.
"Oh, like you did the other day outside the store?" he shot back.
"Hey, let's cut the chatter and keep our focus on the objective," Steve broke in.
"Sorry, Cap," you replied. By this time, you were back to Bucky's side, his arm around you. The smell of his aftershave sent a wave of comfort over you.
"You okay, sweetheart?" Bucky inquired as he kissed that spot behind your ear that he knows can make you weak in the knees. He took a deep breath and caught the scent of his favorite perfume on you, causing him to be the one with possible knee problems.
"I'm fine, just want this to be over and done with already," you muttered. As you scanned the room, a thought occurred to you. Of all your team members, you had yet to see Clint "Hawkeye" Barton. "Hey, has anyone seen Clint yet tonight? Repeat, anyone got eyes on Hawkeye?"
Before anyone could answer, Tony appeared on the stage with a folder in his hand and grabbed the microphone. "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for being here tonight. As you know, the Stark Foundation is always looking for opportunities to support the community. The inspiration for tonight's award comes from someone within my own company," he announced.
Tony went on to explain that a scholarship was being created in honor of your parents in the amount of $1million. He mentioned that while you attended college, you took classes within the Foreign Language Department. Since then, the Foreign Language program of your school had received private donations from your parents to keep it afloat. With his help, the scholarship would continue to fund the program for future students of foreign languages.
Tony's eyes roamed the crowd until they landed on yours. He smiled and beckoned you to join him on the stage to accept the award on behalf of your parents. A certificate had been printed for you to present to the dean of your college alma mater.
As soon as you were halfway up to the stage, the lights in the ballroom went out, plunging the entire ballroom into darkness. Realizing that Dazon was finally making his move, Tony shouted, "FRIDAY! Lock down the Tower and seal off this room!"
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
When the lights came back up, your upper arms were being gripped by Dazon's guards. But most concerning was that Hawkeye was standing in front of you. He had an arrow in his bow, drawn and aimed straight at your heart. His eyes had flashed completely black, indicating he was being possessed by a demon, confirming your worst fears.
Bucky, Steve and Natasha started to rush towards you and Clint. "WAIT! NO, DON'T! STAY BACK EVERYONE, PLEASE!" you implored. Dazon's guards tightened their hold on your arms, making you wince from the bruises you knew were being inflicted.
Dean and Sam walked slowly over to the table where you and Bucky had been sitting. "Yeah, don't. You'll never reach her in time, and there's a demon controlling Hawkeye right now," Dean carefully explained.
"Excellent advice, Mr. Winchester, and you are exactly correct," Dazon confirmed. "Although, if you care more about your precious archer than this woman, then by all means, keep advancing," he smirked. He sauntered over to where you were being held. "I've been waiting a long time for this, my dear. Your parents caused me no end of trouble by interrupting my plans for a demon army," he remarked.
You lifted your chin in defiance, glaring at Dazon. "My parents were right to put a stop to you all those years ago. The world may be a mess right now, but one thing it doesn't need is another demon trying to rule it," you spat out.
Dazon drew his hand back and slapped you across the cheek, leaving a red mark. Bucky charged at Dazon, intent on making him pay for putting his hand on you. Steve and Natasha were only barely able to hold him back, knowing it would be worse for you if Bucky tried to fight Dazon. You silently communicated to Bucky that you were all right, and to hold on just a little bit longer.
"You know, I think I like this meatsuit. He's durable, in great physical condition, and a captain of industry. Which means I have thousands of loyal employees ready and willing to do whatever I tell them to do. I like it here. I think I'll stick around for awhile, rebuild my army," Dazon mused.
"Now, you know we can't allow you to do that," Dean replied, his M1911A1 pistol raised and pointed at Dazon. In response, Dazon waved his hand and sent Dean flying across the room, crashing into a table covered with empty drink glasses. Dean was a little slow in rising to his feet, but you were more concerned with the gash in his forehead from the impact with the table.
"I don't think you're in any position to stop me, Winchester. None of you are, as a matter of fact," Dazon declared. "It was so easy to get to Mr. Barton here," he motioned in Clint's direction. "Apparently, he forgot to get himself inked, which would've kept my lieutenant, Tarkil, out. But, with no anti-possession symbol, it was like walking through the front door and setting up shop," Dazon gloated.
You turned to Hawkeye, locking your gaze on him. "Clint," you started. "Clint, I know you're still in there, and you're stronger than the demon. You know me, I'm your friend, and I know you don't want to hurt me. Come on Clint, you can do this! Fight it! Kick the demon out!" you shouted.
The grip on his bow and arrow had started to waver and his aim had shifted a little from its original target. He was blinking rapidly and shaking his head as if trying to clear it from the demon residing in his body. Suddenly he dropped his bow and arrow and clutched his head with both hands, roaring in intense agony. The demon was trying to keep control, but you could tell it was rapidly losing ground to Clint, who was getting close to expelling the offending party.
"That's it, Clint, you're doing great, you've almost got him out," you coaxed. Black smoke suddenly erupted from out of Clint's mouth and he dropped to the ground, still alive, but unconscious.
"SILENCE!" Dazon screeched. His hand shot out and grabbed your neck, lifting you off the ground, then he started to squeeze. "You are as troublesome as your parents were, and you know what happened to them," he seethed.
Black spots started appearing in front of you, and were getting larger the harder he gripped your neck. You didn't have much time before you would completely lose consciousness. "Any last words before I finish choking the life out of you, hunter?" he retorted.
"Yes," you managed to whisper. You took a deep breath before uttering what you hoped wouldn't be your final words. "FRIDAY....SMOKE ON THE WATER," you exclaimed.
A puzzled look crossed Dazon's face at your choice of last words. A chime sounded to indicate that FRIDAY had indeed heard your command and began to play the pre-recorded message.
Exorcizamus te, omnis immundus spiritus, omnis satanica potestas, omnis incursio infernalis adversarii, omnis legio, omnis congregatio et secta diabolica.
Ergo, draco maledicte. Ecclesiam tuam securi tibi facias libertate servire, te rogamus, audi nos!
A red smoke seeped out of Jeremiah Nelson and floated to the ceiling while his body dropped to the floor, unconscious, but alive. Dazon's spirit tried to escape through the air vent, but was blocked. It tried seeping under the door, which was also blocked. The smoke that was Dazon's spirit began to swirl around on the ceiling, as it was trapped with no meatsuit to wear.
From a nearby table, Sam produced an Enochian puzzle box and opened the lid, which pulled Dazon's spirit in. As soon as the lid to the box was closed, the markings and symbols glowed orange for a few seconds then went dark. Sam took the puzzle box and placed it inside of a bigger box. The larger box had the proper warding and symbols on it to ensure Dazon's permanent captivity.
Once Dazon's spirit was no longer connected to his meatsuit, you were released from his hold and you dropped to the floor. Bucky rushed over to your side and cradled your unconscious form in his arms. "No no no, baby, come on," he crooned. "Please wake up, sweetheart," he pleaded while rocking you back and forth.
Dean knelt down beside you and Bucky, his fingers pressed to your wrist. "She's just unconscious, I can feel her pulse but it's kinda weak," he affirmed.
"Okay, let's get her to the MedBay. FRIDAY, ask Dr. Cho to meet us there so she can check--" Tony started but was interrupted by a groaning noise heard from you.
"My head hurts," you rasped. "Did we get him? Is everybody okay?" you asked through half-lidded eyes.
Bucky breathed a sigh of relief that you had regained consciousness. His right hand cradled your cheek, and when you gazed into his soulful eyes, you could see unshed tears shimmering in them. "Hi," he whispered shakily.
"Hi," you whispered back, then turned to press a kiss to the palm of his hand. Bucky closed his eyes, reveling in your touch. A few tears escaped, which you brushed away with the pad of your thumb before covering his hand on your cheek with your hand. "Is it over?"
Bucky nodded. "It's over. His spirit is trapped inside one box, which Sam put inside another box. Clint's demon is gone, he's being tended to right now," he informed you.
You tried to maneuver yourself to a sitting position so you could then stand up, but your body was still a little weak from the fight with Dazon. Bucky helped you up from the floor and into a nearby chair from one of the dinner tables. He brought you some water to ease the burning in your throat due to the lack of oxygen.
"Tony, everybody, get out of my way, I have to see her," Clint bellowed. He was struggling to escape from Tony and the medical personnel trying to treat him to get to you. As soon as his eyes found you, he ran over to where you were sitting. "Sunshine, I'm so sorry for what happened," he implored. "I can't believe I almost....If I had released...." he trailed off, trying to keep his emotions under control.
You put your hand on Clint's arm and looked him straight in the eyes. "Clint, you have nothing to apologize for. I know that wasn't you in control, because the real you wouldn't have let anything happen to me," you replied.
"I would never," Clint whispered, his bottom lip trembling. "I felt so helpless, I couldn't do anything, couldn't stop any of it from happening."
"I bet it felt like you were in a dream, right? You know, the kind where you scream at the top of your lungs and no one hears you?" you asked, to which he nodded. "Yeah, I've been possessed by a demon before, so I know what it feels like and it sucks," you chuckled. Clint responded with a watery grin. "You're still my friend, Clint, that hasn't changed. I'll follow you into battle any day," you asserted with a smile. The two of you embraced, then Clint allowed himself to be taken to the MedBay to be checked over.
"How about you, pretty girl? You ready to be checked over by Dr. Cho?" Bucky asked.
"I'm fine, James. Nothing a little rest and cuddling with my favorite super soldier wouldn't fix. And if it happens to lead to....'other activities', well....I certainly wouldn't be opposed to it," you added slyly.
Bucky scooped you up in his arms and held you close to his body. "I can certainly manage some cuddling, but I think we should stick to getting some rest. We've had a busy night, solnyshka," he replied with a weary grin.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Back up in your room, you and Bucky helped each other out of your formal attire and made sure it was all carefully hung up in the closet. After you had changed into pajamas, you climbed in under the sheets and Bucky soon followed. He laid on his back, with one arm curled around you, keeping you close by his side. Your free arm was draped across his midsection, your fingers dancing on and under his T-shirt.
The two of you had been laying in bed together, enjoying each other's presence, when you lifted your head and waited for Bucky to look at you. "Let's get married," you declared.
"What are you talking about, sweetheart? We're already getting married a few months from now," Bucky reminded you.
"I know, but I mean this week. Let's get married this week," you clarified. At the puzzled look on Bucky's face, you continued. "Think about it, James. All of our friends--family, really--they're all already here. That's all we need. I'm sure Tony can pull some strings to expedite the marriage license, but why couldn't we?" you pondered.
The more Bucky thought about it, the more he realized you were right. Neither of you wanted a big, flashy wedding, but one more intimate, only close family and friends. "Okay. Okay, let's do it," he responded with a grin on his handsome face.
"Really?!? You mean it??" you exclaimed, to which he nodded.
"Solnyshka, there is very little in this world I would deny you, and this definitely isn't one of those things. I can tell how important this is to you. If it makes you happy, then who am I to stand in the way of that? Besides, it means I can call you my wife that much sooner," he added with a gentle tap to the end of your nose.
"Oh, James," you whispered, tears prickling behind your eyelids. "I love you so much, and I can't wait to call you my husband," you remarked.
"I love you, my solnyshka," Bucky replied, then rolling over so he was facing you. He started dropping feather-light kisses anywhere he could reach, your cheeks, your neck, eyelids, nose. It was like he was on a mission to leave no inch of your skin untouched by his lips, as if to devour you. Not that you minded in the least.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
It's amazing the amount of stuff that can be done in a short amount of time with an unlimited bank account. Tony was indeed able to call in a favor for nearly every major part of the wedding experience. Whatever you needed, Tony had a connection for it.
Tony was able to get an expedited marriage license for you and Bucky, because one of his friends was a judge. This judge also happened to be at the fundraising gala that night and was a former hunter, long since retired from the life. He was only too happy to grant this favor to Tony in exchange for having saved his life at the gala. The judge even offered to officiate the wedding, to which you and Bucky agreed.
For his part, Bucky chose Steve to be his Best Man, with Sam Wilson as a groomsman, while Thor and Loki were designated as ushers. Knowing how important they are to you, Bucky personally extended an invitation to the Winchesters to be his guests for the wedding. As such, it put them in the front row at the ceremony. At the reception, Sam and Dean had seats near the head table with all the other Avengers.
On your side, you asked Natasha to be your maid of honor, with Wanda as a bridesmaid. Since your father and Uncle Bobby could not do so, you asked Tony if he would walk you down the aisle.
When you asked him, he tried to act like he wasn't emotionally affected by hiding behind his tinted glasses. You could tell he was a little choked up, but you wisely refrained from saying anything out loud. Deep down, you knew he wasn't expecting you to choose him, though he was deeply honored to give you away.
Everyone in the wedding party and the small number of guests were either Avengers or close friends. For this reason, you and Bucky chose to have the ceremony in the Tower Gardens. As such, there was no need for the men to dress in tuxedos, but they did make use of Tony's favorite tailor. Everyone got new suits, including Sam and Dean.
The bridal party once again set out together to find their wedding attire. The bridesmaid and maid of honor dresses you chose were floor-length in navy blue satin with spaghetti straps. They had a racer-back and a mesh criss-cross at the waist.
Your wedding dress was a white, off-the-shoulder ball gown style, with a sweep train and a navy blue and silver beaded sash at the waist. It had metallic appliqués with beads and sequins from top to halfway down the tulle skirt that sparkled when you moved.
The minute you stepped into it, you knew it was the dress. Nat and Wanda's reactions confirmed that you had made the perfect choice. Although you were more comfortable in jeans and a T-shirt, you felt very much like a princess in your dress. You couldn't wait to see Bucky's reaction to you.
As was tradition, the night before the wedding saw you and Bucky sleeping apart. Of course, that didn't stop the two of you from texting each other well into the night. The two of you officially signed off at around 1:00 a.m., with promises to meet each other at the altar.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The wedding day was a flurry of activity, making sure everything for both sides of the wedding was done perfectly. For the bride's side, that included professionals for hair and makeup. Tony also sent Pepper in to the bridal suite to keep everything organized and running smoothly.
"Okay, something old? Check, I have this locket that once belonged to my mother. Something new? My dress. Something borrowed? Nat's shoes, thank you, love. Something blue? The sash on my dress. And a sixpence for my shoe," you finished, looking around for a penny.
"Here you go," Pepper held out a penny with the current year on it and helped you slip it into your shoe. "You know, I probably shouldn't tell you this, but you threw Tony for a loop when you asked him to give you away," she shared.
"I wondered about that," you murmured. "He tried to hide behind those tinted glasses of his, but I know he wasn't expecting me to ask this of him."
"Yeah, he's tough on the outside like that iron suit he sometimes wears, but inside? He's just a soft marshmallow," Pepper grinned as she shrugged her shoulders.
You giggled at her analogy. "With the penny, that's everything, then. I'm ready to get married now," you affirmed. "How do you think it's going with the guys?" you wondered.
>>>
"Hey, Steve, you've got the rings, right?" Bucky asked his Best Man.
Steve made a show of patting his pockets and looking around like he didn't know where the rings were. "I don't know, Buck, they were just here. I swear I put them in my pocket, but I don't feel them in there right now," Steve replied.
"Aww, you gotta be kiddin' me, Steve! How could you lose the rings? Holding on to the rings was pretty much your only--" Bucky trailed off when he saw his best friend's shoulders shaking from laughing so hard. "Punk," he muttered.
"Just a bit of pre-wedding humor, Buck," Steve remarked.
"Yeah? Well, you nearly gave me a heart attack," Bucky retorted. Then he gave Steve a friendly nudge to let him know all was forgiven. "Wonder how it's going with the girls. 'Specially my bride, I bet she looks just like an angel, Stevie," Bucky mused. "Today's the day I make her my wife."
Steve clapped his hand on Bucky's shoulder. "I know. Let's go get you married, Buck," he grinned.
>>>
Bucky, Steve and Sam made their way to the front of the altar to await the procession of the bridal party. First, Natasha sauntered down the aisle and took her place opposite the groom's party. She flashed a wink at Dean, taking him completely by surprise. Wanda soon followed, filing in behind Natasha.
The music changed to Pachelbel's Canon in D, signaling it was your turn to walk down the aisle towards your groom. You caught Tony just before he took his first step forward. "Sunny? You okay?" he asked.
You flashed him a brilliant smile worthy of your nickname. "I'm perfect, Tony. I'm marrying the love of my life today, and a lot of the thanks goes to you. So thank you, Tony. For everything," you whispered, trying to hold back your tears.
"You're welcome, kid," Tony replied gruffly, his voice thick with emotion. He cleared his throat to disguise his attempt to get his emotions back under wraps. "Let's go get you married, Sunny," he smiled.
>>>
When you took that first step into view of the altar, Bucky's breath was taken away. He already knew you were beautiful, but today, you were exquisite. For him, time seemed to slow down and the rest of the world melted away until it was just the two of you. With each step that brought you closer to him, his smile grew so much, his cheeks felt like they would split open.
The moment your eyes landed on Bucky, his was the only face you saw. No wedding guests on either side of the aisle, no bridesmaids or groomsmen at the front, just your future husband. Every step you took was one towards a life you would share with the man who was your best friend, your lover, your everything. And he would soon be yours, as much as you would be his, as husband and wife.
Once you finally reached the altar, you looked closer and could see there were tears shimmering in Bucky's eyes that had yet to fall. You hoped they were of joy, because it was rare for you to see Bucky cry except under extreme circumstances. Bucky held out his hand to guide you the few extra steps to the altar. As Tony put your hand in Bucky's, he leaned over and said, "Take care of her, Barnes." Bucky nodded in response.
"Hi, sweetheart. You....you look....you do look like an angel," Bucky finally managed.
"Hello, my love. You look more handsome than I've ever seen," you remarked softly.
A rogue tear had broken loose and rolled down Bucky's cheek. You handed your bouquet to Natasha and turned back around to Bucky. With your right hand, you cradled his face and wiped away his tears with your thumbs. Bucky gave a huff of laughter and he smiled. "There it is. That smile I've been missing since we parted last night," you whispered.
"Let's do this, hmm?" Bucky responded with a wink. You nodded, then you both turned your attention to the judge.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The ceremony was simple, but it was easily the most beautiful, because of the love you and Bucky held for each other. The judge announced that you both had written your own vows, and he invited you to share them with everyone.
"My sweet solnyshka....you are one of the best parts of my life. You accepted me, all of me, even the darkest parts of my life. But that's why I call you 'solnyshka', which means 'sunshine'. It's because you shine your generous, caring heart on me to chase away the darkness. I will love, honor, and definitely cherish you. I will be your shoulder to cry on if or when life overwhelms you. To share in all of your joys and to not be the source of your pain. This I promise to do for the rest of my days," Bucky affirmed. He winked at you and mouthed the words, "your turn".
"My brave sergeant....ever since that first conversation we had in my office about books, I knew how special you were. I had heard about what the hardships you'd experienced in your life. But despite it all, James, you have remained a kind, compassionate, thoughtful man. You are worthy of everything good this world has to offer you. I will love, honor, and definitely cherish you. I will be your safe harbor whenever a storm rises, and mend any parts after it passes. To show you how much you mean to me and to not let you forget it. This I promise to do for the rest of my days," you pledged.
Next came the exchange of rings. This time, Steve did not risk Bucky's ire by pretending he'd forgotten them or couldn't find them. With trembling hands, Bucky slid your wedding band on your left ring finger, then kissed it. You grasped Bucky's wedding band and gave him a wink before slipping it on his left ring finger and kissing it.
"By the power vested in me by the great State of New York, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride," the judge announced.
Bucky wasted no time in sweeping you into his arms and giving you that first kiss as a married couple. "I love you, solnyshka," he whispered.
"I love you, James," you responded.
"Ladies and gentlemen: It is my distinct honor to present to you Mr. and Mrs. James Barnes!" the judge proclaimed. The garden erupted into cheers of joy and shouts of congratulations for the new married couple as they walked back up the aisle and into the Tower for the reception.
"Reception is in the first ballroom on the 81st floor, the one right as you step off the elevator," Tony informed the guests.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
After a lavish dinner of prime rib or chicken, with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables, it was time for toasting the happy couple. Steve went first as Best Man, followed by Natasha as Maid of Honor. Each of the wedding party members, including Thor and Loki, had a chance to offer their congratulations or even words of advice.
Even Tony had a chance at the microphone and after he was finished, he placed it on the table near Sam and Dean's places. The brothers first looked at each other, then at Tony who acted like nothing was out of the ordinary. Sam motioned for Dean to take this opportunity and give his toast. Dean rolled his eyes, but picked up the microphone as he stood from his chair.
"Hey everybody," Dean started, then cleared his throat. "My name's Dean Winchester, I'm pretty new around here, well, I guess so is my brother, Sam. But, we've been friends with the bride for a long time, since we used to work together. I could probably tell you some really good stories, but I think I need a few more drinks for that," he chuckled. A ripple of laughter went through the crowd at his remark, then he continued.
"Her nickname around here is 'Sunshine', which sure fits. At one point, I used to think she and I would end up together, but....guess it wasn't meant to be, not for us anyway," he remarked. Raising his champagne flute to you and Bucky, he continued. "She's an amazing woman, Sergeant Barnes. One of the best. Take care of each other, be there for each other, love each other. Do that, and you'll have it made. To the bride and groom," Dean finished.
Everyone raised their glasses after Dean's speech. Afterwards, you locked eyes with Dean and smiled, then mouthed, "Thank you". You then turned and gave Bucky a lingering kiss on the lips. Tony walked over to Dean's table and retrieved the microphone to make a few announcements. He mentioned that some of the tables would be cleared momentarily so that the dancing could start.
Fortunately, Tony's usual go-to DJ for his parties was available. After the tables were cleared, you and Bucky shared your first dance as a married couple. After that, it was dancing with the parents, but both your parents and Bucky's were gone. So, Tony danced the father part with you, while Pepper danced with Bucky as the mother part.
The DJ played the usual group dances, like the Cha-Cha Slide, the Hokey Pokey, the Electric Slide and even the Chicken Dance. During one of your breaks, you told Natasha how Dean had asked about her the day he showed up at the Tower.
Nat gave you a knowing wink and left you with Bucky, then approached Dean at his table to ask him to dance. You were surprised when he accepted, because the last you knew, thee Dean Winchester did not dance, not even when asked. They danced the end of a fast song, which led into a slow one. At one point, you caught Dean's eye and toasted him with your drink. He gave you the thumbs-up from his hold on Natasha.
After much dancing and champagne drinking, it was time to leave for some alone time with your husband. You and Bucky decided to spend your wedding night in your room in the Tower. Soundproof measures were engaged of course, courtesy of FRIDAY.
When you got to the door, Bucky opened it a crack, then scooped you up into his arms. You let out a shriek of surprise when he cradled you to his chest, then threw your arms around his neck. Once inside, he gently set you back on your feet, but didn't fully release you. He dipped his head towards you and gave you a long, breath-stealing kiss.
You carefully slipped your feet out of Nat's borrowed shoes, groaning in relief. Out of the corner of your eye, you could see Bucky staring intently at you, his hands in the pockets of his trousers. "See something you like, Sarge?" you wondered coyly.
Bucky took your hand and tugged you closer then wrapped his arms around you. "You're so beautiful, solnyshka. I can't believe you're finally mine," he murmured.
"I was always yours, James," you remarked, caressing his cheek with your hand. "Now, I can't seem to reach the zipper on the back of my dress. Would you be so kind as to assist me in that task, Mr. Barnes?" you asked innocently, batting your eyes.
"As you wish, Mrs. Barnes," Bucky replied. He placed one hand on your shoulder and with the other, he brushed your hair from your neck. Then he took hold of the zipper tab, slowly dragging it down, wanting to savor every second of undressing his new wife.
Bucky leaned forward and dropped soft kisses to each new inch of skin revealed by the retreating zipper. Once it reached its end, he pushed the dress off your shoulders while you drew your arms out of the sleeves.The fabric and lace pooled at your feet, leaving you in your thigh-high stockings and new lingerie. The item, a white bodysuit with a lace front and cutout in the mid-section, was a gift from your bachelorette party.
"Whoa, baby," Bucky whispered. "Who do I have to thank for this?" he asked.
You giggled at his reaction. "It was a gift from Wanda at my bachelorette party," you explained.
"Definitely have to thank her for this. Now, as much as I like this on you, I'd much rather it was on the floor," he remarked. He curled his pinky finger around one of the straps and gently tugged it down from your shoulder, then repeated the motion on the other side. By the look in his eyes, you were in for one of the best nights of your life, made better because now he was your husband.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
It was late morning the following day before any Avenger or Winchester ventured outside of their rooms. Steve came in first, followed by Sam Wilson, only one of whom was nursing a light hangover. Thor and Loki were next, still feeling the effects of the Asgardian mead they consumed at the wedding reception.
Sam and Dean came in next, followed by Natasha and Wanda. Neither Winchester appeared to be nursing much of a hangover at all, a fact which did not escape attention.
"Wait a minute, hold up," Sam Wilson started. "You two drank the most of all of us, yet you're in here fresh as daisies. What gives?" he demanded, pointing at Dean.
"High alcohol tolerance," Dean responded. "Whiskey, or alcohol in general, is pretty much currency in the hunting world," he explained.
"He's right, Falcon, but even the great Dean Winchester has his limits. Oh, I could tell you some stories," you teased. "Good morning, everyone," you smiled. Bucky appeared a few seconds later, wrapping his arms around you from behind and offering his greetings as well.
"Good morning to you, newlyweds," Natasha replied. "Certainly didn't expect to see you today, if not for a few days at least," she smirked.
"Really, Nat? I certainly didn't expect to see you in a Led Zeppelin T-shirt, either. Particularly because I know exactly where it came from," you responded smugly. Natasha's face flushed a deep red, which left her unable to reply. On your way to make coffee, you affectionately squeezed her shoulder so she knew you were only teasing.
Moments later, Tony appeared with a large envelope in his hand. His face broke out into a smile when he noticed you and Bucky in the kitchen. "Ah, good, you're both here. Although, I must say, I'm a little surprised," he mused. "Anyway, I know you were stressing about the honeymoon, not wanting it to interfere with any missions, so here you go. Two weeks, go, have fun," he said as he handed you the envelope.
Bucky peered over your shoulder as you opened the envelope to find a pair of airline tickets. In addition to the wedding, he had taken care of planning your honeymoon as well. He assured you that it was all arranged and all paid for you and Bucky to take a two-week cruise in the Mediterranean. There were stops in Lisbon, Marseilles, Athens and so many other cities it made your head spin.
"Tony," you breathed. "This is wonderful, it's a dream come true, but it's too much. You already did so much for us as it is," you protested and tried to return the envelope.
Tony held up his hands, refusing to take it back. "Nope, uh-uh, sorry Sunny, but this is non-refundable, so you two had better go get packed. There's a car waiting for you downstairs for Happy to take you to the airport. I'll even let you use my jet to take you to the port where you board the ship," he stated.
You and Bucky looked at each other and decided that yes, this would be the perfect honeymoon. Before you left the kitchen, you threw your arms around Tony's neck. "Thank you, Tony. We'll never forget everything you did for us," you choked out.
"Okay, okay, come on. Go get packed, you don't want to miss your boat," Tony muttered. You disentangled yourself from Tony. Then you grabbed Bucky's hand and practically ran back to your room to pack your bags.
About thirty minutes later, you and Bucky were in the car, waving goodbye to everyone as it pulled away from the curb. Happy drove you around to the private jet terminal, where there was a red carpet leading up to the steps to enter the jet. Two flight attendants greeted you and Bucky and followed you up the stairs into the cabin of the aircraft. They congratulated you on getting married, and you promised to let them know if there was anything more they could do.
Soon after you and Bucky were secured in your seats, the overhead speaker crackled to life, with a pre-flight announcement from the pilot. You smiled as you reached over and took Bucky's hand in yours, intertwining your fingers.
"Good afternoon, this is your captain speaking. We are currently fourth in line for takeoff to your final destination, which we will reach in just under two hours. I would like to wish a sincere congratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs. Barnes. I hope that the two of you will have a wonderful and romantic honeymoon on your Mediterranean cruise. Please relax and enjoy the flight."
As soon as the seat belt sign was off, you grabbed the packet of information that Tony had put together for your honeymoon. "Oh, James, this is going to be so amazing! We have our own private balcony on the ship, right outside our room. There are tours we can take to explore--" Bucky gently interrupted by placing a finger on your lips.
"My love, my darling wife, all of that is wonderful, really. What I'm most looking forward to is the room service available 24/7. Because I don't see us getting out of our room much, at least not the first couple of days," Bucky remarked, an amorous look in his eyes.
"Oh. Well, I can see what you mean, my love. However, I don't think we should spend ALL of our time on the ship. We're going to be stopping in some pretty amazing places," you pointed out.
"Hmm, that may be true, but they're not as amazing as you, sweetheart. By the way, did you know that this jet has a bedroom in the back? Care to join the 'Mile-High Club' with me, Mrs. Barnes?" he grinned and waggled his eyebrows.
You took his hand in yours and started walking towards the back of the plane. "I would, but....I may have some trouble getting out of this dress," you pouted. "Do you suppose you could help me with that, Mr. Barnes?" you batted your eyelashes.
"I'm right behind you," Bucky chuckled. He nudged you forward until you were practically dragging him behind you to the room. Once inside, he closed the door and slid the lock in place. "I love you so much, Mrs. Barnes," he remarked.
"And I love you, Mr. Barnes," you replied.
