Realizing that Denethor was supposed to be “attractive” was not on my 2024 bingo card.
“Denethor looked indeed much more like a great wizard than Gandalf did, more kingly, beautiful, and powerful; and older.” — Return of the King, Chapter 1
“Denethor was a proud man, tall, valiant, and more kingly than any man that had appeared in Gondor for many lives of men; and he was wise also, and far-sighted, and learned in lore.”— Lord of the Rings, Appendix A
You’re telling me, Denethor could have been:

Because seriously…daddy? sorry. daddy? sorry. daddy? sorry.
But instead we were gifted creepy tomato uncle vibes:

Bruhh…
Also the tomato was just unnecessary to have imprinted on my brain for all eternity

return of the king is on and i have to look away every time denethor is onscreen. they did him so badly. it hurts. i like the movies a lot but my god peter jackson couldnt do layered characters. i understand they were strapped for time and had to make a plot with only a fraction of the space the books had, but it would have been so much more impactful to keep denethor as a noble, beautiful, brilliant, and lordly character forced into a terrible situation with no good choices rather than reduce him to a mean dad is mean its good we're killing him to make way for aragorn lookit how nasty he is guy.
not only does it cheapen and simplify the story, but it also destroys boromir and faramirs characters and motivations! to make faramir the abused wet-dog of a good-boy misunderstood son, and boromir the wrongly-devoted misplaced-passion fathers-son... it cheapens them! faramir is full of noble talk but he has his flaws, and boromir was devoted to his father and his city for good reasons. denethor was a good ruler! denethor was proud and beautiful and noble! but in turning denethor into a pathetic grimy man with favoritism turns faramir into an underdog martyr and boromir into almost a villain. (imo it also cheapens the impactfulness of pippin as a guard and of aragorn taking the kingship but i digress)
i like the movies. i understand why things were skipped, shortened, and cut. i understand why characters were changed! but this is smthn so lazy that just enrages me.

Tolkien Theory Time
I posit that in the Palantir one of the many possible futures Sauron caused Lord Denethor to see was a future that when both his sons had died there was no hope for Gondor. That this was somehow a sign of things he had seen. Losing Boromir was the first crack but so long as Faramir lived there was a glimmer that maybe Gondor would somehow survive and that there was a purpose in continuing to strive against the Dark Tower then when Faramir returns near enough to death to be mistaken for dead the last tiny thread of Denethor's hope and sanity snaps and with his city nearly in ruins he's like 'yep this is definitely the doomed future I saw in the Palantir one there's no purpose in living any longer when all is lost' and decides to turn himself and his son into a human smore party.

The Wild Kine of Araw
Genus : bovine
Name meaning : wild ox of Oromë
History : Legends claimed they were descendants from Oromë's personal herd of cattle, so they were named Kine of Araw (Araw being the sindarin form of Oromë). They were the quarry of Vorondil the hunter, an ancestor of the ruling stewards of Gondor, and it was he who cut the horn from a kine and made the Great horn out of it, that would later be used by Boromir before his death.
Description : They're barely described at all, save for a brief mention of 'wild white kine' in the appendices of the Lord of the rings, which seems to hint that eventually the Kine of Araw in middle Earth became a sub-species found only "near the Sea of Rhûn" as opposed to being pure Kine of Araw. Which is also supported by the consistent use of the phrase 'wild kine/ox' when describing the history of Boromir's horn. They're also said to be hardier and wilder than any other species of ox in middle Earth.
Influences : In an unpublished manuscript in the Bodleian library, tolkien likens the wild kine to aurochs, an extinct wild ox species that domestic cattle stem from.
Similar species to use as a reference :
Aurochs
"These are a little below the elephant in size, and of the appearance, color, and shape of a bull. Their strength and speed are extraordinary; they spare neither man nor wild beast which they have espied. These the Germans take with much pains in pits and kill them. The young men harden themselves with this exercise and practice themselves in this sort of hunting, and those who have slain the greatest number of them, having produced the horns in public, to serve as evidence, receive great praise." - Julius Caesar describing aurochs in his History of the Gallic War.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since aurochs had been extinct at the time tolkien lived and so little is mentioned about the wild Kine of Araw, its impossible to know how closely tolkien imagined the two species to look, however there are a number of breeds that still exist today that have similar colouring, confirmation and behaviour to both aurochs and wild kine of Araw.
Pajuna cattle
The closest living relative to aurochs in the world, certain lineages are thought to share similar colours and markings with the aurochs and they share the same forward facing horns. They're extremely hardy cattle that have adapted to harsh living conditions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heck cattle
Bred by Heinz and Lutz Heck to be a modern auroch in the 1920s - 1930s, they naturally share alot of traits with the aurochs, they are one of the largest breeds in the world and are extremely aggressive, but they are still smaller than an actual auroch
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Indian Gaur
One of the largest and most aggressive breeds of wild cattle, if left undisturbed they are more wary of humans but when in regular / semi-regular contact with humans they become aggressive. They've been known to charge without provocation, kill domestic cattle in fights and there's even been reports of them killing tigers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chianina
The largest breed of cow in the world, and is also white which technically makes them closer to the canonical description of the wild kine of Araw than others mentioned. They are more docile than the others on this list, due to working closely with humans and being bred for farm work (pulling carts, ploughing etc)

This post (and maybe more like this in the future) was inspired by @outofangband 's amazing posts on the flora , fauna and general environments of Arda, please go check out their posts if you like this sort of thing.

At first they had quiet, for those were the days of the Watchful Peace, during which Sauron withdrew before the power of the White Council and the Ringwraiths remained hidden in Morgul Vale.

Much must be risked in war. Is there a Captain here who still has the courage to do his Lord's will?

This started as a sketch and then I started painting on it halfway through, and then I merged a few layers I didn't mean to merge, and then it spiraled off the rails from there, stylistically. The color balance is burning my eyeballs and the levels are doing who even knows, but I took a leaf out of @nihilizzzm's book and added decorative stars and dots and it did, indeed, make it better.
ANYWAY, if lotr wiki is to be believed (referenced from Unfinished Tales, maybe?) the flag of the office of the Stewards is pure white with no device, and their symbol is a white rod and three white stars. I've been meaning to play around with this imagery (because I'm trash for symbolism), so I sketched up a concept of Boromir's formal uniform for Aragorn's coronation. I like the idea of Aragorn in dark blue, black, and silver and Boromir in white, silver, and gold.

#STEWARD OF GONDOR FULL#
Narmacil died without issue, and was succeeded instead by his younger brother. This was his nephew Minalcar, who would one day rule in his own stead as Rómendacil II. Narmacil tired of the cares of the Kingship, and appointed a Regent to manage the kingdom for him. He avenged his father's death, and pressed on to capture land in the south for Gondor, extending its borders to their greatest extent in history.īecause of the extent and wealth of his realm, he was called Alcarin, Atanatar the Glorious, though he lacked the adventuring warrior spirit of his predecessors. In Ciryandil's time, the Haradrim came against Umbar, and the King died in its defence. He was lost in a storm off the very coasts he had conquered. The second Ship-king famously captured the southern Haven of Umbar for Gondor, expanding its boundaries even farther. He was succeeded by his nephew, the son of his brother Tarciryan. His Queen, Berúthiel, was sent into exile, and so he was the first of Gondor's Kings to die childless. The first of the four Ship-kings, Tarannon put his energies into the building of Gondor's navies. Turambar avenged his father's death, and won wide lands for Gondor in the east. Nonetheless he met his death in renewed attacks by the Wild Men out of the East. He defeated the Easterlings, and took the name Rómendacil - ' East-victor' - in token of this. During his reign Gondor began to suffer attacks out of the wild eastern lands. Ostoher rebuilt and expanded Minas Anor (later Minas Tirith) and took it for his summer residence.
#STEWARD OF GONDOR FULL#
At this time Meneldil took on the full Kingship of Gondor, and its Kings through the next thirty generations would be his descendants. Isildur was lost with his three eldest sons, leaving just his fourth son Valandil, then a mere boy, as heir. On his journey, Isildur was ambushed by Orcs and slain, and so the Kingship of Gondor passed on to Meneldil and his heirs. In the second year of the Third Age, he left Gondor in the care of his nephew Meneldil, the son of his brother Anárion, and rode away into the north. He succeeded his father as High King, but before departing into the north, spent time ordering the South-kingdom. He formed the Last Alliance, and marched to the defeat of Sauron, but he himself was lost in that great victory. His royal seat was in his own capital in the north, Annúminas, and during his reign, Gondor was under the direct command of his two sons, Isildur and Anárion. He founded both Arnor and Gondor, and ruled the Two Kingdoms as High King.

Just in case my fellow lotr fans didn't know, there's 2 wild orcas in Iceland called Boromir and Faramir, and since they are often seen travelling closely together its possible they're brothers
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Boromir
Tumblr media
Faramir
Its worth mentioning there's also orcas called ulmo, angmar and aragorn that are seen around Iceland (idk if they were named because of lotr but theyre still technically lotr names so I'm counting it)
