Posting the transcript of my keynote address last Friday for UP KAMALAYAN. While the speech is about history, it seems poignant with the things happening today. #stopthekillingsph #defendpressfreedom https://www.instagram.com/p/CjVDjfuJE6w/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

. // tw police brutality, death, guns, and shooting //
for those who aren’t aware, yesterday there was a shooting in paniqui, tarlac. a mother, sonya gregorio (52), and her son, frank anthony gregorio (25) were both shot in the head TWICE because they lit up fireworks in their area, and a police officer, jonel nuezca, got mad. jonel nuezca was off-duty and police officers aren’t allowed to bring their guns around when not on duty. it’s also been said that there were some previous altercations regarding right of way and the issue resurfaced during the confrontation. this man killed two people due to a personal vendetta.
there were many witnesses around, one of them being nuezca’s daughter, who was about 12 (i can’t find any news articles disclosing her age). his daughter just stood and watched as they argued, even going as far to say “my father is a police man!” to which sonya replied, “i don’t care!” sonya’s last statement angered nuezca brought the gun to her head and said “putangina, gusto mo tapusin kita ha?” (trans: “son of a bitch, do you want me to finish you?”) he then shot her and her son point blank, shooting the son twice and then shooting sonya once more after she had already hit the ground.
this all happened yesterday afternoon, sunday, december 20th, 2020, at 5:00 pm. jonel nuezca has since then turned himself and his pistol in to the police.
authorities have been claiming this shooting as an isolated case, when in fact, there have been many headlines regarding police officers shooting civilians.
videos of the shooting have been going viral on social media. i’ve seen the video for myself, and it’s messed up how you can see that nuezca barely even FLINCHES when he brings his gun up to sonya’s head. and the fact that he did that when his daughter was right beside him and there were so many witnesses is even more messed up. it’s reported that he said “mission accomplished,” to his daughter after he shot them.
now, if nuezca could shoot these people in broad daylight with witnesses and in front of his own daughter, imagine what he could’ve done at night, with no one around. imagine all the deaths that have been unrecorded because there was no one around.
i know other people will be able to say more and say it better, because i really still can’t wrap my head around this. most people say he shot them because they were lighting fireworks, but clearly he shot them because he knew he could abuse his power. he knew he could do it because police and military officers often get praised by the president for doing things like this.
i honestly can’t say much of my own opinions at the moment because i’m still in a state of shock, but i just wanted to post this on here because i want people to be aware of this. so many countries have been suffering because of police brutality, and it’s so unfortunate that these kind of instances often get shooed under the rug because people want to continue living in their picture perfect world where people don’t get killed and people don’t abuse their power. it’s heartbreaking to see this people die at the hands of these so-called authoritative figures.
i’m not saying what the gregorios did was right. if i’m not wrong, it’s illegal to light fireworks in your barangay/district without authority (but i could be wrong so please don’t quote me on that). still, nuezca shouldn’t have shot them.
what happened is absolutely sickening, and it could still be happening right now as i’m typing this. somewhere out there another person is being punished by an authoritative figure for doing essentially nothing. i just hope that more light would be shed onto these kind of cases, and not shooed under the rug two days after it happened.
may the souls of sonya gregorio and frank anthony gregorio rest in peace, and condolences to their family.

the philippines is in a dark place right now, and has been in a dark place for a long time. our government practically does not care about us, and this negligence has costed the lives of many filipinos. from the lack of response during typhoon ulysses, to the suppression of journalists, to deped’s poor education system, to the lack of mass testing, to police brutality-- there are so many things that happen in the philippines that mainly go ignored. for how much our president is so open about willingly killing people just for the littlest of mishaps, it’s honestly quite disheartening to see so little people talk about it.
just because the philippines isn’t the usa or the uk shouldn’t mean one should merely dismiss us. please, do not forget about us just like how you treated problems like the anti-terror bill like a trend. it doesn’t take much to share and to educate yourselves about the problems present in our country.
please don’t forget about us and please continue speaking out for us and for other people who can’t speak out.

GOOD MORNING, AFTERNOON AND EVENING BITCHES YUP YUP WE HAVE ANOTHER EPISODE OF "POLICE BRUTALITY FUCKING SUCKS" AND THIS TIME IT FEATURES THE PHILIPPINES. YUP ONCE AGAIN THE PHILIPPINES, AS ALWAYS, IS IN DEEP SHIT. Lemme explain.
So Police Officer Jonel Nuezca had an argument with 25-year old Frank Gregorio, a civillian, due to boga or fireworks and stuff. The argument escalated which led to the involvement of Frank's mother, 52-year old Sonya Gregorio, who tried to protect her son. Accompanying the policeman was his 12-year old daughter (and someone recording the whole thing). The daughter then shouted "MY FATHER IS A POLICEMAN" to which the mother said "I don't care" in the tune of 2NE1's I Don't Care. The policeman then said "Putangina gusto mo tapusin na kita ngayon ah? (Son of a bitch, you want me to finish you off now?)" aND THEN PROCEEDED TO SHOOT THE GREGORIOS: he first shot Sonya point-blank in the head, then shot Frank TWICE, then shot Sonya again who was already on the ground.
This all happened by 5 pm yesterday, December 20, in broad daylight.
His daughter didn't even flinch.
If it weren't for the recorded and posted video (the vid is very triggering i really recommend not watching it), we wouldn't know about this incident. Heck there are many incidents of police brutality in the Philippines especially in regards to protestors but most go under the radar because of lack of documentation or because the government and police department is just so freaking good at sweeping these cases under the rug. This is why I humbly ask you guys to spread the news like wildfire because THE VIOLENCE-PLAGUED SYSTEM OF THE GOVERNMENT AND OUR POLICE AND MILITARY FORCES NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. News in the Philippines doesn't reach international media often but now we really need it to because with every passing day, our dictator-of-a-president Rodrigo Duterte turns this country into a hellscape, normalizing death and violence to such a degree that almost every day you can find Philippine headlines about the deaths of Filipinos either by the hands of government incompetence or police brutality or both. If you guys want to learn more or if you guys want to help I suggest looking up the hashtags #StopTheKillingsPH and #PULISANGTERORISTA on twitter. Spreading the news would also be very much appreciated.
My country is currently not a safe place for one to live in and every day our people walk a tightrope in the efforts to somehow survive the COVID-19 pandemic and the brutality and incompetence of our government. We desperately need all the help that we can get.

I'm so upset right now at the Philippine government and the state of police because how dare this policeman ruthlessly kill a mother and a son over an argument, shot not only once, but twice, in front of his child?! And said child didn't even flinch, was caught bragging that her father was a policeman moments before the other party was gunned in the head.
Now the country is up in arms, calling for justice. The Philippine National Police spokesperson mentioned it as an ISOLATED CASE like what the fuck do you think has been going on in this country? So many cold cases wherein police are involved in heinous crimes against the Filipinos. Just last month there was the Cordillera case. DON'T YOU LIE TO THE PEOPLE'S FACE.
Another point to argue. It has been proposed that policemen have body cameras as part of their get-up during an operation, and the police body claimed that they have God as their camera, and that each and every policeman/woman has been trained to be honest in their lime of work. Now imagine if the neighbor didn't take a video of what was happening. After the shooting, that murderer STRAIGHT UP JUST COLLECTED HIS CHILD AND WALKED AWAY AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED as per the witness.
Then the Presidential spokesperson has mentioned that what a police does outside of their uniform does not reflect what they do as a policeman. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME. Do you think you stop being a spokesperson outside of your office? Do doctors suddenly abstain from being a doctor once they're not wearing their white coats? Do engineers and architects and accountants and all other professions stop being what they are once they are out of the uniforms?
The police are sworn To Protect and To Serve The People, but in what way are they serving? There are plenty of cases where the police are the main suspects in killing unarmed people, where they plant evidence, where they arrest and gun down people in the middle of the night, and many others that I cannot name right now.
The President has enabled this militarian thinking, while the other government sectors are suffering. The Common People are suffering. What more must happen for this to change? The elections are two years away from happening, and I tremble in fear of what will happen.
There are so many issues in this government, but right now I'm just sitting in my seat, incapable of doing anything but type out my frustrations.
Pilipino, kailan ka ba magigising? Hanggang saan ba ang titiisin mo hanggang kilalanin ng gobyerno lahat ng hinaing mo?

A policeman with his own 13 year-old daughter murdering a mother and her son in broad daylight and in front of people with video cameras? This is next level of impunity of those in power.
And you know what, there are people who are still ready to justify what happened like this is a scenario of "Nanlaban," "adik yan kaya binaril," at "deserve nila yan." What the hell?!?!! If that is the case, then their blood is in your hands, too.

Enraging!
Police brutality must stop! Police never serve and protect the country. They protect the fascist government!
If there were good cops, they should condemn bad cops! Don't we just let this pass and do nothing. Aren't we tired?
The state wants to normalize killings. This is not the first time. They want to change our mindset that we are being ruled by fear! We are not! And we must not!
This will not end at postings on social media! We will do something bigger outside the screen!!
Nakakapagod!

Police brutality is happening all through out in different countries. This is a big issue and most of us doesn't speak for this. Y'all should remove your blindfold. Speak for the truth. Be a responsible resident to your country. Always speak and care for all the serious issues. Stop selective activism 'cause it doesn't make you cool. Protect the innocent ones.

Are you feeling angry, frustrated, and/or hopeless because of the midterm elections in the Philippines? Were you able to cast your ballot? Have you talked to other kababayans about what has happened in the last couple days? . THIS FRIDAY, MAY 17TH 6:30pm / Rally at the PH consulate NYC 556 Fifth Ave (btwn 45th & 46th Streets) . Anakbayan New York (ABNY) will join @malayamovement for the National Day of action to Defend Democracy in the Philippines. . WHAT’S AT STAKE? The systematic electoral fraud and manipulation has led to the victory of allies of Duterte in the Senate. Control of both the House and the Senate translates to even more power for Duterte to continue his policies and actions. With such power, Duterte can more easily change the Constitution, known as charter change, using the pretext of “switching to federalism” to lift term limits of politicians, strengthen political dynasties and allow foreign control of the country’s resources. . In the face of election fraud, illegal campaigning, broken counting machines, lack of transparency, violence, and mass disenfranchisement of voters, Filipinos will: . DEFEND DEMOCRACY!! DEFEND ACCOUNTABILITY!! REJECT DUTERTE!! NO TO MACHO-FASCIST DICTATORSHIP IN THE PHILIPPINES!! . #defenddemocracy #stopthekillingsph #adobonation #pinoy #filipinofood #woodside #woodsidequeens https://www.instagram.com/p/BxfSHa9gvx3/?igshid=1euzk6ubwnls4
