I won’t lie, I’m sure I’ll want to see it when it does come out, but I can’t say I ever expected it to after Hero. 

I mean, holy shit - you can’t really expect much from this series, but Hero was so bad. Another perfect example of a new studio stepping in mid-sentence and deciding they had to distinguish themselves when we were already watching because of what it had been. They changed the art style and the entire feel of it lost everything, it went from darker and bolder to the bright, less defined, less interesting wash that anime as a genre has fallen victim to. The writing (yes, there is good and bad writing in this franchise, which is hilarious to be able to say) was so bad. Rias Gremory went from being the most confident and capable badass of them all to the same sniveling, pouty, whining crybaby unable to operate on her own without the validation of a man that every bad anime has to have. I cringed plenty in New, but I was also laughing as I did it, thinking how the voice actors probably had to do 112 takes to get through it because of having to stop every five minutes to ask “what, they’re not really going to say this, are they?” Not so much in Hero. It’s all cringe without the fun - there is nothing at all even remotely interesting about the characters or what they are saying, like it’s there just to be there instead of there to tell a story. The ecchi elements became token and gimmicky instead of part of the story, and it makes it feel like cheap, creepy, pure fan service. It made me feel bad for the characters, to be honest, like they deserved better. There’s no flow, or relevance, or heart to any of it. It’s just all-around bad. 

I’ve honestly never really understood why I like DxD, it has all the elements of a show I would normally be repulsed by. Somehow, though, even with all the gratuitous skin and would-never-happen ecchi situations, the absolutely absurd dialogue, and the smh predictability of every arc, DxD still somehow managed to find a way to into my world and set up shop. There really are some great characters. There really are some fun quirks. They really do get themselves into some very compelling situations. 

Then there’s Hero, which honestly has none of that. It looks dumb because Passione over-simplified the look of everything that TNK had created so that the world knew a new studio was on the scene, and it was a major fail imo - it changed the climate of the entire show. It sounds dumb, because the script has all the creativity of the back of a shampoo bottle and no matter how good your voice actors are, there’s only so much you can do with lifeless, pointless writing. So with well-established characters that didn’t look, sound, or act anything like themselves, then yeah - Hero as a whole was seriously f’n dumb and so unlike the first three that it came of as borderline intentionally poor. I honestly believed that Passione had effectively killed this anime franchise, so the fact that S5 is actually happening at all is - at least to me - kind of unbelievable. 

Everyone is reporting that the entire voice cast will be returning for S5, but I hope that in the 4yrs they’ve had to plan this fifth season that Passione finds a way to make it more like the first three than the way they set about molesting the fourth, because it felt like something totally different to me. And yeah, sure, sometimes different is really good. 

But sometimes, like this time, different is the opposite of good. Sometimes different is Hero.

Rui Tsukiyo's light novel series "Kaifuku Jutsushi no Yarinaoshi" (Redo of Healer) will be receiving a TV anime adaptation. It will be produced by studio TNK.
