Book Review: The Wild Ones by Nafiza Azad (🇫🇯 Fiji + others)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[image 1: book cover: Amid violet coloring and flowers are 4 illustrated woman: a blue-eyed, brown-skinned girl with lavender hair, a dark-skinned girl with a jeweled braid, a light-skinned girl with long blue hair, and a dark-skinned girl with a tropical flower in an afro. The Wild Ones
Author: Nafiza Azad
YA World Challenge read for 🇫🇯 Fiji
While the author was born in Fiji and is a "self-identified island girl" according to her bio, only a couple chapters of this book took place in Fiji (plus one Fijian character). I didn't know that before reading, but that's okay and enough to count as my book for Fiji. 😘
Review
This was a uniquely written book and I liked it for that. The premise is a sort of magical-girl squad of sexual violence survivors. They are Paheli's "Wild Ones" - she has saved them all in some way and given them magic stars which instill powers. They are able to traverse the Between, a sort of magical hallway between cities, which is usually only accessible to non-humans. When Paheli is reunited with Taarana, the boy who first saved her and gave her the stars, the Wild Ones decide to protect him from the baddies hunting him down.
The book alternates between two points of view - one is Paheli's, and the other is a collective "we" voice of the other Wild Ones. The voice will also sometimes address the reader directly with comments on gender violence and society. This might seem heavy-handed to some readers, or cathartic to others, depending on the person. I found it refreshing to read a different style.
My favorite parts of the book:
The cities! The Between takes us to multiple cities, each one described as a character in itself, so that we are immersed in such diverse places as Marrakech, Morocco and Busan, South Korea.
I wasn't expecting to find such a cute romance. Seriously, they were so cute.
The diversity of the girls. From Africa to Iraq to the Pacific, the Wild Ones come from across the globe (and the LGBT spectrum). I also love that the author did not only choose Western-palatable names, and chose to show that the Widads and Gufrans of the world are just as beautiful (they are!)
I did want to know more about the character's backstories - each has her own poem, though cryptic - but at the same time I felt the message was "our trauma is not your entertainment" in leaving their stories intentionally vague. So, respect to that.
This was a unique book with a fun feminist theme that tackled themes of trauma and violence at the same time. Keep this in mind for the content warnings (there is also on-page suicide), but if you're okay with that this was worth the read.
Here's the beautiful full jacket cover that I didn't get in an ebook! ✨

My Adventures with Superman delivers a solid reintroduction to Last Son of Krypton - SEASON REVIEW
Tumblr media
*Spoilers for all of Season 1 of My Adventures with Superman*
Adult Swim and Max's My Adventures with Superman's first season has just wrapped up, and I have quite a few thoughts on the fun ten episode journey.
When watching the initial episodes of My Adventures with Superman, I was immediately smitten with our lead three protagonists. Clumsy adorable Clark, Conspiracy theorist and loyal friend Jimmy, and leader of the crew, the overly ambitious and intense Lois all had fantastic chemistry, I knew they would be the force carrying the show if it had nothing else to offer.
Tumblr media
Luckily, it does. But let's talk about our core crew first.
One thing I love about this show is they quickly throw away the secret identity shtick for the core crew. Having Lois figure it out so soon and Jimmy knowing already speaks to their characters and their skills as reporters. Plus, now that that drama is over, they can go on this journey together, as they should.
Tumblr media
The character I was hoping for more of which I was most happy with was Jimmy. Ishmel Sahid continues to bring multiple layers to Jimmy thoughout the show, and quickly made him my favorite character.
Tumblr media
I felt he was the most sidelined of the three in the first couple of episodes, but he really gets two episodes focused on his friendship to the others in the middle of the season that I loved, and has a fun plot developing Flamebird throughout the season.
It pays off with the final joke of him becoming a multi millionaire, but I hope they use this money plot for Jimmy to go on ridiculous adventures and team up with other heroes and monsters like in the comics.
Tumblr media
Also just love that Jimmy continued to be a good wingman to both Clark and Lois and give them space when needed. What an absolute pal.
Tumblr media
While I'm here, I do love the cute love story between Clark and Lois, but it felt a bit rushed. Throwing the L word around a bit quick in my opinion, but I understand this is basically an anime, and needs to be a bit dramatic. I wish they would've saved that for Season 2, but I love the chemistry and that they are already together.
Alice Lee continues to shine as Lois, often having to voice some incredibly dramatic points in the show. I love the revelation that she is "the worst Lois" because all other Lanes are exceptional. That episode in general is a highlight for me, although it is a little bit Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Tumblr media
Of the three characters, Lois felt the most fleshed out, dealing with insecurities from her father, trying to live up to her own expectations and his, and trying to make a real difference. Those little things make moments like the crew getting desks so satisfying and heartwarming.
Tumblr media
I feel like people have talked to death how great Jack Quaid is as Superman, so I'll try to be brief. He's incredible. It's clear they casted for Clark instead of Superman, which was a smart move.
As Clark he is humble, kind, brave, and genuine. You cry when he does, you feel for his pain when he stumbles and you cheer when he succeeds. This should be the blueprint for Superman media moving forward.
While I had to adjust to the Superman voice, by the end of the show I was good with it, and it was perfect. I would love to see him lead an anime style Justice League.
Tumblr media
I think tying General Lane to this Kryptonian invasion plot was a really good through line throughout the season. Making him directly connected to the destruction caused by Kryptonians felt very Batman v Superman (but in a good way), and made their interactions feel real weight.
Tumblr media
One aspect of the show I criticized and hoped would improve were the villains. While I like the overarching villain being Sam Lane, I think this show doesn't quite have the iconic villains say a Spectacular Spider-Man or a Young Justice does. I was hoping for someone with something special or unique to grasp on to, but there really wasn't.
Tumblr media
I think having the Suicide Squad be one of the final battles, and doing the match up from the "What if Superman ripped off the roof of the white house?" line from Suicide Squad movie is kind of fun, but the Squad members didn't feel fleshed out enough for me to care.
I think with the exception of Banshee and Mxyzptlk , most of the designs for the villains felt a little boring. This includes the final two teased at the end of the show. I wish more thought and color was put behind the characters, like Superman or even Jor-El.
Tumblr media
Parasite was the most fun inclusion, but I felt he was too different from his usual version for me to fully grasp on to. Of the Superman villains shown, I think he could come back and win me over.
I hope characters like Brainiac, Zod, Luthor, Lobo and Doomsday bring life to this show through villainy. With great antagonists, this show would be absolutely perfect, but it's just not there yet.
I think this show is on to something really special, and I hope to see it continue for multiple seasons. It could be a fantastic introduction to the character of Superman, if it could bring more life to Metropolis through its recurring characters.
Overall, I think it's a great show. One that surprised me with emotion, the laughs, the triumphs and the falls. I recommend you watch the season, now streaming on Max.

i feel like there needs to be some sorta study about the way opinions on games work, and this weird hatefully dependant relationship gamers have with game reviews, sites like ign and shit. i noticed it particularly on the new suicide squad game - for those out of the loop, the new "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League" game is out, with a pretty disastrous pre-launch, and worse launch. Before games come out, normally early copies are given out to reviewers so they play it and give out their impressions before release, so people know whether to buy them or not. on paper this concept is good, and can heavily affect the launch of the game and the way people perceive it. however, this concept doesn't always, or even usually, work, because reviews are so skewed and biased. games like cyberpunk 2077 had one of the worst releases ever seen in gaming, with a completely broken mess of a game that didnt pack half of the features promised, yet pre-launch reviews were top tier, with 5/5s and 9/10s all over (screenrant compilation of reviews). so obviously, either most polished and minimized versions are given out at times to hide the mess, or reviewers are paid off or just plain stupid.
now, not for those reasons, the suicide squad game's early copies were not given out to reviewers. this was likely because the game isn't very good, or at least doesn't meet expectations, and the studio didn't want to showcase it before launch, so people still buy it. This could be because the studio didnt want to pay reviewers off, or they weren't confident that reviewers would be dumb enough to give good reviews. Alternatively its because they thought their reputation would be even further tarnished if a well reviewed game turned out to be an utter piece of shit again. obviously this all backfired and the review embargo was incessantly spoken of and speculations about the games shittiness rose.
few days later, game comes out - only people seen to be having a good time? I've seen people saying to not believe reviews and to play the game yourself - no one is saying its an amazing, reality shattering masterpiece, but its a fun looter-shooter. it has some cool designs and ideas, and the gameplay is pretty fluid (I haven't played it, im quoting people ive seen, who aren't qualified reviewers). launch is pretty tame comparatively, and is honestly one of the better releases the studio could've hoped for probably. it performs pretty mediocre on day one, but pre-launch was a weird clusterfuck so its not surprising. overall, for a game most people dubbed 7/10 at best, with terrible expectations and advertising, launch is great.
and the come the reviews. IGN has given the game 5/10 - which, for IGN, is basically a 1/10. IGN is notorious for very rarely dipping below 7/10, giving some of the biggest pieces of shit, truly 1/10 games, passable scores. On recent reviews i had to scroll pretty far to find a game below 6 (and was plenty surprised to find a 1/10 game, The Day Before), and those with 5s and below are normally minor, non-AAA games like Bluey: The Game, or some weird fortnite festival with a 4/10. Games with horrendous reviews from people I've spoken to, and some game critics on youtube, like avatar: frontiers of pandora, have survived with a 7/10 despite underwhelming launches and mid-to-terrible gameplay and story. What I'm getting at basically, is that Suicide Squad is one of the few triple-A games I've seen in a long time to get a bad score, when normally IGN sucks big studios like warner brothers off.
So, could this be because the game is shit? Unlikely, since as I said, people were enjoying it. If you disagree with that because you didn't enjoy it, then disregard and remember that significantly bigger pieces of shit still got better scores than suicide squad.
REMEMBER THE CYBERPUNK LAUNCH (9/10 UwU) [Editors note: Editors note 2: Update: Editors note:]).
So no, i don't believe IGN gave suicide squad a 5/10 just because its a bad game. Following a careful analysis and bonking my head with a brick until I got a concussion, i do believe IGN only gave suicide squad a bad score because of the review embargo. Frankly if you told me the reviewers didn't even play the game, i would probably believe you, because it seems like the most agenda-fueled, hate-stirring vengeful move IGN has done in a while, even going so far as to use the memory of the late Kevin Conroy, batman's voice actor, to stir hate by calling his performance in the suicide squad game 'a waste', despite kevin stating before he enjoyed playing an evil batman. IGN literally used a dead guy's performance in a game to indicate the game is a waste and not worth the effort, to stir hate in players and push their salty agenda. Why? Presumably, because they didn't get early review copies. Because they want to discourage this in future releases, because their entire website is built on getting bribed to suck off bad games and save them from terrible launches. They know they've been failing in recent years. With shitshows like cyberpunk not passing under the gamer radar anymore, studios know that a few paid off reviewers wont do enough to salvage their half-assed pieces of shit, so either they gotta make good games with effort, or polish them afterwards anyways, and either way reviewers aren't a worthwhile investment anymore.
On a sidenote, I'd love to come up here at the climax of my post with hard evidence IGN gets bribed for good scores. I have some old articles from like 2012, and a bunch of people on reddit who said so, but not really any hard evidence. There were allegations thrown around regarding starfield, another terrible game with good scores, that IGN got bribed by microsoft to give it a good review. IGN chief pledged to quit his job if evidence was brought forwards, and i dont think that happened. I can't prove to you beyond a reasonable doubt that IGN is bribed to be so skewed; at the very least, it seems like a profitable cycle of investments. Game is terrible and cheap, studios pay IGN to put a bandaid on it, release is profitable, the end. But with no evidence, its only really a theory... a... a... nay, i shan't.
So what did we learn? It seems like IGN is intentionally trying to tank the Suicide Squad launch, because they're salty over being cut out of the scam. It seems like journalistic integrity is thrown even farther out of the window, with IGN trying to act like mafia loan sharks by roughing up the game for not coming with a share of the profits, and discouraging future games from following suit. IGN right now seems like a parasite on the gaming industry, a leech that's been profiting off this perpetuating cycle of the industry dying with terrible cheap games that kill the genre's artistry. Now it looks a bit like the game industry is healing, and the IGN leech is starting to peel off, no longer able to cash in on failure games like the tabloid scum they are.
Don't let IGN discourage you from playing good games. This isn't an advertisement for the Suicide Squad, I barely even know if its actually good. IGN is clearly biased though, and so are most other game review sites. Do not trust reviews from corpo-sites, simply said.

Welp, with The Flash coming out and it being like swan song to the DCEU, I couldn't help but take a look back at some of the other DC movies and i was like, "why not just rank them and with my stupid opinions!"
Aight so this is the part where I explain why, originally i considered making a post of each movie like how i did it with marvel movies and shows on Twitter at some point but decided not because I'm not a poignant person with the most creative writing nor could i often keep the same attention span for it for awhile so here is the best way to review em all in a few words or less.
Will be doing it in the order they were released in.
Tumblr media
1. Man Of Steel
7.5/10.
I actually like this movie, it's definitely has non-stop action and i can't help but think maybe I just enjoy that because I have a peanut for a brain. It definitely tries to be more grounded to see how humanity would react to Superman existing our world. I do like Henry Cavill as Superman i just wish we got more scenes of him being more warmer and more scenes of him helping and saving people. I can definitely understand why others disagree and really dislike this one.
Tumblr media
2. Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice
3.5/10
This movie exists and is what set off panic triggers at Warner Bros. & Prettyyyyyyy much ruined the perception of Superman and Batman to a bunch of "certain" people. It crams in way too many storylines, tries to set up way too much, some miscasting, kills off superman in his like 2nd appearance, wonder woman got spoiled in the trailers and whatnot.
Ben Affleck as Batman was cool and the warehouse fight scene was cool. I'm sad that it was Dick Grayson the one who got killed.
The Ultimate Edition of this one is just a 6/10, while it does give more context and more scenes that I do like, it still has the same problems so no, it doesn't fix everything.
Tumblr media
3. Suicide Squad
2/10
Nobody likes this movie, also nobody likes me.
I remember thinking that the comic con trailer was the coolest shit to ever exist. Then I saw the movie and remember feeling lied to and deceived.
Everything sucks, everything happens too much at the same time, characters barely feel like character at times, etc. Really deserving of that Oscar!!!!!!!
I did like Harley Quinn, Amanda Waller, and Captain Boomerang (even if he barely did anything)
Tumblr media
4. Wonder Woman
8.5/10 Wonder Woman
Really love this movie, Wonder Woman is great, i love the characters, the chemistry, the action and her helping people.
It does stumble abit towards the end however but even then, it still felt like a great movie 👍
Tumblr media
5. Justice League (2017)
5.5/10
This movie pretty much is the reason why the DCEU became a wild rabid animal that needed to be put down immediately.
Movie is just mediocre, humor is just "Not funny. Didn't laugh." , Action is lame, backstories are rushed, Flash is annoying, Aquaman is a dickhead for no reason, cyborg doesn't even get a backstory, they really take their time saving people, dumb Russian family subplot.
I liked the after credits scene of Superman and Flash racing. So while the movie is not extremely awful and not a bad waste of your time, it's also not a good waste of your time.
Tumblr media
6. Aquaman
7.5/10
Really like Aquaman, love how cheesy it was, Black Manta was cool.
While i love the cheesiness in this movie, this movie does also get abit stupid at times but still a fun time where you can go off with, with a pal or smth.
Tumblr media
7. Shazam!
8/10
I thought the movie was a fun time, nothing outrageous but nothing bad as well, just a movie i can have a good time watching.
Tumblr media
8. Birds Of Prey
6.5/10
Cassandra Cain is not even Cassandra Cain and that still pisses me off to this day. Overall, it's definitely a Harley Quinn movie and NOT a Birds Of Prey movie. Black Mask was a cool villain. This movie felt like it was trying too hard to be like Deadpool ngl.
Tumblr media
9. Wonder Woman 1984
4/10
It's like being asked out by someone you like so you get excited and say yes and later show up to the date all ready and stuff, only to find out it was a prank just to see if you were gullible enough to fall for it.
Tumblr media
10. Zack Snyder's Justice League
6.5/10
Welp, i now wish the movie never got released so the people who are like #restorethesnyderverse never got the satisfaction and got to comfortable enough to become a bunch of crybabies believing they are the top of the world.
Movie is just okay, cool action, good characters for the most part but holy shit is it way too long with really unnecessary scenes. If you can't release a movie without making it 4 hours long thinking it'll make things more cohesive, well i got some news for ya pal.
Welp turns out i ran to a limit with the images so lemme make another post about it to keep sharing my thoughts on the DCEU Movies, ig this is a part 1 of 2 post.
But for now, what did you think of my thoughts? Do you agree or disagree to the point that you wanna break into my house to beat me up, kill me and burn my house to the ground.
Lmk what you think or want to hear more thoughts for me to specify.
Thanks for reading, losing your braincells along the way and have a nice day.

I've been revisiting youtubers recently. some I like under the cut
Folding Ideas: a marvelously well-spoken social and media critic, with commentary on symbolism in film. his breakdowns of the editing failures of films such as Suicide Squad and The Snowman are entertaining and informative, and he has mini-episodes on narrative concepts like Thermian arguments (the Watsonian of Watsonian vs. Doylist explanations) and ludonarrative dissonance. politically on top of it (mostly), extremely astute, and a pleasure to listen to. See Earthsea and Adaptation Sickness, End of Evangelion and the Audience Author Membrane, The Thermian Argument, The Art of Editing and Suicide Squad, Cinematic Trainwreck – The Snowman: A Vlog, Cooking Food On The Internet For Fun And Profit, Annihilation and Decoding Metaphor
Ariel Bissett: a delightful young Canadian book reviewer takes us on her journey of renovating her old house. mostly cosmetic changes rather than structural as she's essentially self-taught, but she's a charismatic and charming host with a unique eye for style and color. her design sense matches closely with my own (we're both Monet fans), so I find her videos very soothing and satisfying to watch. I haven't seen any of her book reviews, but she seems thoughtful and passionate. I like all her house videos, but particularly the three yearly house tours so far (intro video, one year in, two years in,), Building The Perfect Guest Room, Complete Office Renovation!, Living Room Renovation To Look Like Emma's House!, Building The Perfect Reading Nook, Transforming the Smallest Room In My House With Wallpaper, and honestly all the others. it's a real pleasure to see the changes she makes over the months. I can't wait for the kitchen redo!
Accented Cinema: probably my favorite youtuber right now. he's a Chinese Canadian filmmaker with a focus on films and film-making processes, both his own and those from China (most often) and other non-American countries (occasionally). his videos have brought me to tears more than once. honestly I love too many to list all of them so I'll just list my top favorites but I highly recommend this channel. I loved Why China Cared About Kung Fu Panda, Shadow: Adapting Chinese Art, Who Killed Captain Alex: What Makes a Movie Good?, Chinese Animation: In Search of a Style (brief shot of mdzs donghua at the very end), Why Ghibli's First 3D Looks Soulless, East vs. West: Differences in Story Philosophy, Mahjong & Crazy Rich Asians, Why Are Kung Fu Movies So Patriotic, How I Made a Fake Video Essay
Local Script Man: a professional screenwriter whose advice and commentary on creating stories is really interesting and different than what you tend to see on tumblr. he tends to be kind of harsh but not in mean-spirited way, just in a way that makes it obvious that he knows what he's talking about. I like Oops No Plot, The Key to Writing Freakishly Good Dialogue, and both parts of 5 Essential Storytelling Rules I Just Made Up (part 1, part 2)
Schaffrillas Productions: a guy breaks down and ranks various animated films, often by studio. these videos are just a lot of fun. I liked his videos on the Shrek franchise (one, two, three, four, and the musical), and Raya vs. Encanto - How One Message Failed and Another Succeeded
Super Eyepatch Wolf: this man is, as we speak, convincing me to read Berserk. he has a slow, dramatic presentation of his arguments that draw you in and a great sense of humor. All of his "Why You Should Watch" videos are interesting even if you don't have any plans to watch the show he's describing, because they give an overview of the themes and strengths without spoiling it. he also presents a wealth of information on manga/anime history, and miscellaneous commentary on other media. I liked in particular The Fall of The Simpsons: How it Happened, "Non Battle" Battle Anime, What Makes A Fight Scene Interesting?, The Impact of Dragon Ball Z: The Series that Changed Everything, Why You Should Watch Yu Yu Hakusho, What Makes A Good Character Design?,
Cinema Therapy: these two guys are charming and sometimes funny. they can get annoying and their analyses tend to be very superficial, but I really like their videos tearing into bad romantic cliches. I like 10 TROPES We Hate About Rom Coms, 7 Tips from THE ADDAMS FAMILY to Keep Your Marriage Alive, TITANIC: Love Triangles and Compatibility, Therapist Reacts to THE KISSING BOOTH (Part 1, Part 2), Relationship Therapist Ranks Christmas Romances with guest Shona Kay
Sideways: a channel about music! knowing nothing about music at all, I find these videos really interesting and accessible. see Why the Music in Cats (2019) is Worse than you Thought, Why Pipe Organs Sound Scary, Decoding the Music of The Matrix, Why Avatar has the Most Ironic Soundtrack of All Time, Why the Soundtrack to Shrek is Actually Genius, Ear Training and Sight Singing: The Superpower you get from Music School, Why "Spoken Word" Makes me Nervous
Pop Culture Detective: I like this channel for the analyses of troubling tropes in media, especially the ones on misogyny. See Marvel Defenders of The Status Quo, The Ethics of Looking And The “Harmless” Peeping Tom, Born Sexy Yesterday, The Complicity of Geek Masculinity on the Big Bang Theory, Sexual Assault of Men Played for Laughs (Part one, Part two), Stranger Things, Belligerent Romance, and the Danger of Nostalgia

REVIEW: Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League
Tumblr media
"Repost from a comment I made on a video"
Meh, that the long and short of it for me. It's a decent enough shooter, fun transversal and the bosses are decent (though the Batman one could've been better, I heard Twitter gushing about the role reversal of being hunted by him, but it's just an interactive cutscene near the start of the game. The proper showdown isn't as inventive, if anything I'm annoyed they had to ruin the mystique of Knight's ending). But the story I honestly could care less about.
Suicide Squad has just been a "whatever" bunch to me across all media I've seen them in and it's usually always the same plot: forced into service, a lot of bickering while doing a mission, think they see a way out of Waller's grasp, it goes fubar, complete mission, right back where they started. It doesn't help I don't like Amanda at all, she was at least decent in the JL toon, but each appearance since then has slowly turned up her bitchiness and this game REALLY extenuated that to the point I was groaning anytime she comes back into play. No offense to Deborah Wilson, loved her since the MadTV days and normally enjoy seeing her digital self in stuff like the new Call of Duty and the Jedi souls-like games. But the writing here makes me want to tear my ears out every time she's ranting and raving, even when the squad is doing their jobs as ordered. Jesus, even Nick Fury on his bad days wasn't this bad. Beyond that, I was just shrugging, some bits did make me chuckle and most had me groaning at how try-hard to be edgy or comedic, felt like a New 52 version of this setting with the tone-deafness.
They don't really do anything with the Justice League other then being mustache twirling villains via the mind control, save Diana and even she hardly does much with her scant appearances because the plot can't work if she manages to save the day. Especially wasn't fond how some of the JL get send off, yeah Batman's death felt disingenuous and I really feel sorry for Arkham-verse fans that they now have to be reminded of this game down the line when they replay those games. But at the least his had gravatas to it (and I'm not heartless, I did like the little tribute they gave to Kevin at the end). Flash? Gets peed on after he's defeated. Lantern, decent but ruined by Deadshot's one liner, and Superman, oh that ONE pissed me off because they don't even bat an eye at him before the game moves on with he plot. Superman, man of steel, one of the most popular heroes, is just a damn footnote in this game. Are you kidding me?!
After that, I honestly didn't care anymore, about Brainiac, about the multi-verses and the Brainiacs that control them essentially pulling a Kang the Conqueror situation (and no I don't care about spoilers, this game doesn't care about the fans why should I?). By the end, it essentially ends on "Hey congrats you beat it but this is just part 1 of the story, more to come. Pay us money in the live service to see the rest of it in the season passes."
Speaking of, why did they have to make this an online only game on launch? Crashed a few times setting you back a ways, glitches that turned the enemies into statues, and several soft-locks. Ugh, there's a reason off-line modes are a thing from the start. Say what you will about Resident Evil 6, I know how many fans loathe that game, but Capcom at the least had the sense to include that mode on launch. So how is it Rocksteady didn't have that same thought process? Really only good thing I can say is it does look fun with friends from most videos I've seen and I guess that's what they're aiming for to keep it afloat. I've seen some people on Twitter liking it but let's see if those same masses will stay loyal for the long haul.
Again it's decent, the game's world is huge I will give it that, but doesn't give you much to do outside same missions of break shield, defend car, destroy cannon, take out horde, defend this routines. Nor does Metropolis feel as characterized as Arkham City and Gotham in "Knight". With those, I wanted to explore and see the nooks and crannies of it. Here, it feels cluttered and a lot of buildings look the same, very little stands out to me. Maybe because the game doesn't really let you breathe with the constant alien attacks to do so. Oh but the Riddler challenges are back.... Why? "Knight" burned me out on these, so I did not care when he returned and was wondering why he was even here in the first place. They couldn't pick anyone else for this? And level up is just, eh. You grind, you get better guns and costumes, ho hum. At the least it's faster then Gotham Knights.
Overall this is just average, a step up in presentation but really lacking that quality of the previous Arkham games. You'll either dig it or your won't, it's already divisive on social media as is. So all I can say, play it yourself if your curious and make your own judgement. At the least, it's not a must-buy, if you wanna wait, be my guest, you won't be missing anything if you do and you have plenty of other games to keep you busy in the meantime (Tekken 8, Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth, and the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth at the time of this writing).

Monster High Electrified Review
Tumblr media
originally posted on www.onlyfunthings.org on March 19, 2017
Ciao lovelies! Recently I watched the new Monster High movie, Electrified! I decided to do a review since Monster High is one of my special interests!
 WARNING- Spoilers below!
This movie is the second movie in the new reboot canon. In the Monster High fandom, there are now 2 canons (or official universes), the old canon (before the “Welcome to Monster High” movie) and the new canon (the reboot, so far its “Welcome to Monster High” and “Electrified”).
This new canon’s backstory is a bit different, and I honestly don’t love the backstory here as much. But I do like certain aspects: mostly how it’s
1. SO GAY OH MY GOD I’m SO HAPPY MY OTP (one true pairing, my fave couple) HAS A CHANCE TO BE TOGETHER THANK GOD FINALLY I MAY HAVE SOME REPRESENTATION IN MY FAVE FANDOM and
 2. Probably going to usher in the scene revival (along with Suicide Squad, but more on this will be in a different blog post.)
I want to review the new movie Electrified in depth today! I plan on buying it on DVD when it comes out (but for now, I’ve watched it via streaming because I’m a bad kid and couldn’t wait!).
For this review, I want to review different aspects of the movie in comparison to the other reboot movie, “Welcome to Monster High.” I may occasionally also compare things to the old canon. So let’s go!
OVERALL STORY (HUGE spoilers in this section! Reader beware!)
Electrified was a fun movie because it brings back some elements of the old canon’s movies that I like so much, specifically having subplots going on alongside main plots. In Electrified, Clawdeen is following her dreams of making fashions for both Monsters and Normies (humans). Her squad (the main ghouls- Draculaura, Frankie, Cleo, Lagoona, and surprisingly, Ari) team up to help her, and they begin turning the old power station where Frankie used to live into a salon.
Meanwhile, Frankie meets a new ghoul named Twyla. (I’m so glad they brought her back!). Frankie notices that Moanica and her Zomboys are acting strange and Twyla offers to spy on them. Frankie agrees to this but expresses concern for Twyla, and later saves Twyla from being struck by lightning, but Frankie gets struck.
She seems normal at first, but becomes more and more jittery, absorbing power from her surroundings and begins to glow blue.
She ends up adding the extra “spark” to Clawdeen’s designs, also creating a small, not very cute (in my opinion) electricity-creature named Znap:
Tumblr media
While the designs are being electrified, Twyla finds out that Moanica is using Frankie’s science experiment from the beginning of the movie to steal power from the normies, all under the power station that the ghouls are turning into the salon. Moanica explains that since the normies are afraid of the dark (as explained by Dracula in one of the human studies classes), she wants to make a blackout and terrorize them.
Moanica’s first attempt to trap the power fails, and when she sees Frankie absorbing electricity, she lets Twyla go. Twyla leads Frankie to Moanica’s power stealing device, and Moanica uses Frankie as the new host for all the normie electricity.
Meanwhile, the salon opening is going well. The normies are loving the new “monster inspired” fashions, and think that all the ghouls are wearing costumes. At the height of their success, Moanica activates her device, now using Frankie as a conduit, and causes a blackout, and then unleashes the Zomboys. They all go and wreak havoc.
The main ghouls go under the power station and find Frankie, full of electricity, in shock. They manage to get her out of it by getting her to create more Znap creatures. They all go to stop Moanica, and a small, rather fun looking battle occurs, resulting in Moanica and the Zomboys being forced to clean up the salon they destroyed as punishment. Clawdeen’s salon has a reopening.
Overall, this storyline is pretty good, and having the multiple dimensions to it keeps viewer interest. I didn’t include all of the subplots in that summary though.
Here are the subplots that didn’t get mentioned:
-The girls rescue a new ghoul (Silvi Timberwolf).
-Silvi, Venus, Wraith, Deuce, and a few other monsters form a band. They spend the entire movie bickering over the name and music style. Silvi and Venus get new electrified outfits. The band settles on incorporating every members ideas at the same time.
-The Dracula and Clawdeen’s mom romantic subplot is strengthened.
-Clawdeen’s inner struggle with the difficulties of creativity and fear of failure.
My Favorite Little Moments That Made Me Smile
Tumblr media
-Moanica admitting that she can’t stay mad at the Zomboys, and that they can all go out for ice cream afterwards.
Tumblr media
-The Zomboys flirting with a brain that suspiciously wears glasses that look like Ghoulia’s.
Tumblr media
-Dracula screaming and running around, imitating a human afraid of a spider (gif from @monsterhigh-gifs )
Tumblr media
-Twlya’s obvious crush on Frankie
Overall this storyline for me gets a 4/5. I found that the band subplot was too distracting and kind of irritating. I liked the overall story though. Especially the extra character development it gave everyone.
Tumblr media
FASHION
So….This one is…iffy. I liked how the electrified outfits looked on some ghouls:
Tumblr media
Frankie’s makeup for it made her/them look soo cute!
Tumblr media
I also liked how it looked on Cleo, and Ari.
Tumblr media
But it looked awful on like EVERYONE ELSE. I mean seriously, LOOK AT VENUS! My sweet Eco-punk child looks like a hot mess.
Tumblr media
I also agree with Raythe in that why didn’t the guys get electric inspired stuff? As bad as it may have looked on most ghouls, I was still curious on what it may have looked like on the mansters.
And why can’t poor Moanica ever get new clothes or hair? Why is it that only the main ghouls got new looks? (and I guess Silvi and Venus, and arguably Dracula).
Tumblr media
Also, poor Lagoona, this look does her NO justice..
Overall, the fashion in this movie (and the dolls) was 3/5. While I liked that they introduced different types of makeup, hair, and fabrics, these looks were hot messes!
Tumblr media
MUSIC
So, I have a definite fave from this soundtrack, and it’s “Me and My Amigos.” It’s so sassy, catchy, and perfect for Moanica!
youtube
However, that was literally like the only song that was notable.
“Electrified” by the band created in the movie was….not exactly..good, in my opinion.
youtube
“Electric Fashion” isn’t really good either. It’s catchy but it’s too simple.
youtube
Overall the music was 2/5 compared to the old canon and “Welcome to Monster High.”
Tumblr media
DOLLS
The dolls for this movie could also use some help.
For 1, once again I haven’t seen any male dolls released for the reboot. Not even for Electrified.
For 2, the only version of Frankie I can find is the version with Znap, and this sucks, because that version is pretty expensive, and also is less versatile, as you can’t change her/their clothes. (She’s/they're wired.)
Tumblr media
For 3, all the dolls have that crimped hair, and it’s not very soft. The Ari that
I got, her hair was very coarse and not fun to handle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I will say, there’s a lot of detail on the dresses,  including all of the different patterns, colors, and textures you see in the movie. They also come with extra hairclips!
Another thing I like about the reboot dolls in general is that the joints are stronger. And the bodies feel more durable (and heavy.) Not to mention, they fit Ever After High doll clothing more easily (though still not perfectly.)
Overall, the Electrified dolls are 4/5!
Tumblr media
OTHER MERCH
I haven’t seen any other merch for this movie other than the dolls, which is incredibly disappointing. Let’s hope that more comes out when the movie comes out on dvd.
1/5 for hope’s sake!
Tumblr media
OTHER TIDBITS
-I don’t like Znap, I’m sorry, I don’t think he’s cute. If the reboot is going to do pets, they should at least give Frankie a stitched together pet like the old canon (Sparky the dog and also the stitched teddy bear).
Tumblr media
-They’re slowly developing Frankie and Draculaura’s relationship which I like. Once again, they refrained from shoving in any un-needed male love interests for either of them, let’s hope it stays that way!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So that’s my review on Electrified! I can’t wait to get it when it comes out on DVD!
Have you all seen it yet? Do you plan to? Let me know!

Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective Episode 1 Review - What's This Anime's Actual English Title?
Okay, so is this show’s English name Ron Kamonohashi’s Forbidden Deductions or Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective? I keep seeing both and it’s making me confused. For now, I’ll use the latter since that seems to be the official localized name for the manga. Anyways, I’m excited because I love mystery shows and Akira Amano! The first episode went by a lot faster than I expected but I do like what I am seeing so far.
I do wonder how it feels to be Akira Amano. They (I’m not too sure about Amano’s gender, so I’ll use they until I get official confirmation) had three original works that got anime adaptations with Ron Kamonohashi being the third. They did the original character designs for Psycho-Pass which was a big hit. Now, they’re the original character designer for the upcoming Suicide Squad anime. Imagine all that success.
Tumblr media
Ron Kamonohashi is much different from Reborn! and elDive as it is a detective series. While it may not be the best written story, I do like what I am seeing so far. Basically, this story is about Totomaru Isshiki, a young and foolish detective who isn’t taken seriously by his superiors, so after a suggestion by his co-worker Kiku, he goes and visits a mysterious detective named Ron Kamonohashi who is rumored to solve any case handed to him. What Toto hasn’t realized is that Ron is a lot more eccentric and mysterious than he lets on. Together, they’re going to solve all the mysteries they can.
I do like the straight-laced guy and weirdo duo. That’s probably why I liked The Case Study of Vanitas so much with Noe and Vanitas having so much good chemistry. However, because everything went by so fast in this episode, I can’t really see the chemistry our two leads have but I’m sure that it’ll grow throughout the story. Totomaru is the straight-laced detective who is never taken seriously and is the lowest of his job place’s hierarchy. Nobody respects him. It’s like seeing an adult version of Tsunayoshi Sawada from Reborn. I used to be a huge Reborn fan back in the day… The titular Ron Kamonohashi is very eccentric. He has no furniture in his room and has nothing that connects him to news. His entire room is empty save for a cat and cushioned floor. When he is finally persuaded to join the serial murder investigation, his particular quirks are shown when solving a case; he lies down next to a corpse and talks to them. Afterwards, he figures everything out and then the mystery solving process begins. Ron’s a very interesting character to me, especially with the way he lied down next to the corpse; it looked as if he was sleeping with them. The pose doesn’t help. I really love how unique his eyes are. They’re beautiful. Anyways, Ron is a riot and I love him already, but I do wish that he is better at communicating.
While the premiere was good, I do have a few gripes. The first is that everything went by a bit too fast towards the end. The beginning was a bit slow and then the pace went up four times in terms of speed once Ron is finished with his dead person conversation. Another gripe is that I sort of felt like the culprit was a bit obvious once the setting changed from the crime scene to the park to the barber shop. Like, will all the culprits will be random killers or will there also be people that will be introduced as a good person at first before showing their devious sides when cornered.
The voice acting was actually amazing. Junya Enoki did a fantastic job as Totomaru as he was yelling and screaming like how pure and naive fools should. He does the cute boys well and Totomaru is a new addition to his repertoire. In the case of Ron, I’m not too familiar with Yohei Azakami but he did a good job bringing out Ron’s eccentricities. Like, I’m not too familiar with the manga itself, but if I were to give him a voice, it’d sound like his current voice.
The soundtrack was alright? Like, I don’t really recall anything memorable. The openings from Unison Square Garden, who did the openings for Tiger & Bunny, Blue Lock and the famous ending song of Kekkai Sensen (Blood Blockade Battlefront).
Overall, I do think this is quite an interesting detective story. I hope that it gets better later on and not fall into a predictable hole. What are your thoughts on the premiere of this episode?

Mr. Nobody >>> EEAAO
Tumblr media
Tadi abis beres jam kantor langsung jalan karena rencananya mau nonton Everything Everywhere All At Once (EEAAO) di BEC jam 17.10 tapi ternyata macet banget Bunda. Terus ganti tujuan jadi ke PVJ aja karena ada yang jam 17.55.
Biasalah suka termakan review netizen, banyak yang bilang ini bagus banget. Tapi yah, not my cup of tea.
“ Every path is the right path. Everything could've been anything else. And it would have just as much meaning.” ― Mr. Nobody
You are exactly where you are supposed to be.

Stephen Holder is such an underrated character honestly. Shows so much range in Joel's part. He can be snarky, tough, angry, and/or depressed in every episode. Season 3 so far made me appreciate Joel's acting more. It was truly peak Joel.

What Up Nerds?!
Tumblr media
I am here today to give you not one movie review, but 4! The reason I am doing this is because this movie has four parts to it and I think it’d be a shame to jut do one and not the rest. The movie I chose to review is: Persona 3!
Persona is a game series, and like other popular game series, it got its spawn of movies and anime series. Persona 3 is by far my favorite game out of the whole series. The darker tone and story is what drew me in and I love all of the characters we are given. I also really liked the P3P version as it introduced a female protagonist. Of corse knowing about the game or playing the game before hand will enhance your movie experience and create a sense of nostalgia, it is not required to be able to enjoy the films. You will be able to follow along just fine and enjoy it. I will also keep this review spoiler free!
The reviews will be as follows:
1)Spring of Birth
2)Midsummer Knights Dream
3)Falling Down
4) Winter of rebirth
Tumblr media
Films: 4
Release:
November 23, 2013 – January 23, 2016
Directors: Noriaki Akitaya (No. 1), Tomohisa Taguchi (No. 2 & 4), Keitaro Motonaga (No. 3)
Plot:
Makoto recently transfers to Iwatodai high school and finds himself mixed up in a supernatural happening. He gains a special power known as a persona and becomes part of group known as SEES, Specialized Extracurricular Extermination Squad. Their goal is to protect the people of Iwatodai against monsters known as shadows that appear during the hidden 25th hour; also known as the Dark Hour. In place of the school, a building known as Tartarus appears where most of the shadows appear. It seems to be the key to everything that’s happening, but why?
Tumblr media
This movie is a great start to the series. It encompasses the darker feeling and tone the game before it had. It’s not common to start off a movie or series with the tone of death, but that’s what we get here. We open with the dark hour starting and Mokoto walking past coffins that he seems to be blissfully unaware of. We also start with a suicide. This makes it so you know what you’re in for.
While there are some lighter moments, the tone doesn’t let up. Which is something that the game done as well. And this is where the adaption came in great. The switch form game to anime was done beautifully and the Personas and fight scenes are exquisite. The way they done well to keep the darker tone is in the way they introduced and made Mokoto.
Our protagonist in the game series can be interpreted in different ways depending on dialogue choices and what the player themselves see. There are times that when movies and anime adapt form moldable protagonists, they make them “yes men” and make them flat. But not persona. Mokoto becomes this very dramatic and dark personality. It gives you a new experience to the movies that game players can enjoy. Gives you a fresh take on something yo y already horn dear to your heart. It’s a subtle change, but one that I tended to like very well.
Tumblr media
The rest of the cast stays true to their game personalities. They offer up varying perspectives on situations and bring in the same tensions as the game had. Familiarity is always key to adaptations. Yukari doesn’t have the courage or confidence she needs to fight. Fukka is an emotional wreck. Junpei thinks he worthless. Mitsuru is a strong leader who takes responsibility for literally everything. Then Akihiko doesn’t give two fucks. Put them together and you got one hell of a dynamic team trying to work together.
The presentation of the film is extremely amazing. From lighting to design, I think it’s a 10/10 mate. The orange hues let you know their in the from. The the green lugging lets you know that you’re in the dark hour. The lighting here does a fantastic job for giving you some amazing PC and phone backgrounds. Characters designs, especially persons and shadows, are masterfully done. All of this combined makes those cutscenes form the game look even more epic. That entrance scene to Mokoto’s persona just left me in awe.
The last thing I’ll touch on is the music. We have a mix of the original game sound tack and new tracks. Of corse the new tracks were also made by the amazing Shoji Meguro.
Overall I give this a 10/10. It is an amazing adaptation and subtly gives you new takes on an already know classic. It also gives anyone who doesn’t know about Persona an engaging entrance into this series. It leaves you wanting more, and a good thing too since there are three more movies.
Tumblr media
One thing I’d like to point out is the fact we had a change in staffing. And with this change in staffing came a different take on how to adapt the game to a movie. While the first movies was able to give us some fresh new takes on the source material, Midsummer Knights Dream stuck very very closely to the source material. This one movie covers a lot of material form the games, but still had ample time to explore each plot point to its fullest.
As the team begins to defeat the Full moon bosses to end the dark hour, we begin to see doubt within the team. Maybe they shouldn’t erase the dark hour. Maybe they should keep it around.
Tumblr media
We are introduced to four new characters: Shinjirou, Ken, Kuromaru and Aigis. While the addition of these characters is needed, they became the only characters who had development. Junpei, Makoto and Yukari had this dynamic going on and tension got high, but that was all tossed aside. Junpei becomes a background character and Yukari is almost forgettable. These three are the focal point of the series and yet they got put on the back burner. Yet, I almost don’t care. Why? Because what they did when focusing on our new cast was phenomenal. They took a character that would be hated and made us understand why they are the way they are. Why they act that way. It’s is interpreted with such passion and care that I can’t help but utterly enjoy it. It makes the back burner forgivable. Once again the visuals and music are on point. So many screen shortcake moments and I could listen to the sound track off days. 10/10.
Even though we have two different takes on the series and two different lenses, I do t think it hinders it. In fact I think it enhances it. It gives us Persons fans what we deserve in an adaptation and it also gives that “player choice” vibe with the different tellings between one and two.
Tumblr media
This movie installment fell down. Literally.
If there was ever such a thing as a filler movie in a series, this would be it. While there is a lot of source material for fall, it’s not quite enough to fill the movie run time. So this is where the director took another creative spin to fill in the rest.
During this season we are introduced to social links. Social links are a way to gain new powers and new relationships in the game. As a player of the games I liked this route as you got to see more familiar game mechanics come to life. While I did enjoy this, I did feel that the pacing was a bit off. Which is a bummer since I think the first two movies done really well with its pacing.
Tumblr media
While I generally liked the characters, development and story just as the others there is something that this film lacked in comparison. That was the animation. Character designs were disproportionate throughout. We have some scenes where Junpei is taller than the door frame and others where he’s normal size. Then there was this one weird scene where Junpei comes crawling form a room like a weird human-animal hybrid. The lack of CG took away from the backgrounds of the movie and the cats just looked plain weird. The scenes weren’t as captivating and I feel some of the darker tone was lost. There could be an argument as they were focusing mor on the social links and the fact that Makoto was trying to distance himself away from everyone in order to try and save them.
Im keeping this review short and sweet because there’s nothing much else to say. My overall rating is going to be 8.5/10. Part of me just can’t forgive the animation problems and pacing. So this became the least favorite of the series, but still enjoyable.
Tumblr media
We returned to greatness my fiends.
We are back to great animation and lighting for those amazing background pictures!
This movie also returned to really straying from the game script wise. Which I still don’t mind as it gave me a new perspective on the game I love and I really love here they went with it. The tone of death and darkness are heavily played on, more so than the first. Which makes she’s as this is the final movie in this dark series. A lot of the scenes have more of a horror feel to them which I think fits nicely for what we are about to experience. I mean this is supposed to be the end of days here.

This new material, such as Yukari’s new character story, helps the Fall seem more real. All these changes gave the movie some nice thematic arcs. The story is the most internally consistent among the four movies due to all these heavy changes in plot. It doesn’t go through the sequences from the game as some sort of check list. And that is something I am thankful for.
Winter of rebirth captures the heart of Persona 3 the most and makes this installment my favorite out of the series. The changes made to the film make big some Persona 3 fans who are die heard to an exact replica of the game may have som trouble with this movie. But I implore you to have an open mind. Make sure to watch the other three as you do need the context from them to under and what’s going on since they deviate from the game plot.
Overall, I’m giving this movie a 10/10.
For the whole series, my rating is a 9.5/10. Which is one hell of a good rating for a movie series based on a game.
