Boom!! There goes another one! One of Jupiters many moons, Io, is about the size of Earth's moon, but its surface is full of volcanic activity. This is due to gravitational flexing by Jupiter and other moons. The process heats the moons interior, covering the surface with volcanoes. The featured image is from NASA’s robotic June spacecrafts fly by last week, passing within 12,000 kilometers above the dangerously active world. The surface of Io is covered with sulfur and frozen sulfur dioxide, making it appear yellow, orange and brown. As hoped, Juno flew by just as a volcano was erupting -- with its faint plume visible near the top of the featured image. Studying Io's volcanoes and plumes helps scientists better understand how Jupiter's complex system of moons, rings, and auroras interact. Juno is scheduled to make two flybys of Io during the coming months that are almost 10 times closer: one in December and another in February 2024.

Scientists reveal the first unconventional superconductor that can be found in mineral form in nature

Scientists from Ames National Laboratory have identified the first unconventional superconductor with a chemical composition also found in nature. Miassite is one of only four minerals found in nature that act as a superconductor when grown in the lab. The team's investigation of miassite revealed that it is an unconventional superconductor with properties similar to high-temperature superconductors. Their findings, published in Communications Materials, further scientists' understanding of this type of superconductivity, which could lead to more sustainable and economical superconductor-based technology in the future. Superconductivity is when a material can conduct electricity without energy loss. Superconductors have applications including medical MRI machines, power cables, and quantum computers. Conventional superconductors are well understood but have low critical temperatures. The critical temperature is the highest temperature at which a material acts as a superconductor.

The Beast of Sulphur. Another member of my geology / volcano monsters. Probably the stinkiest of them all! Inspired by the way sulphur crystals grow on the rocks at steaming vents. Some of it melts there and looks reddish, almost bloody 😲 Painted with acrylic inks.

"Issue #28: Viscera, Shiny In the Light of Day"

This absolute monster of an issue is one I've been incredibly excited to get to for months now. Deepdark is a very important character, as the primary antagonist, and he's finally gotten a real spotlight on him. At this point I'm really just writing original xenofiction too, which is fun. Yeah, this a Warrior cats story, you're getting a deer murder cult and you'll be happy with it.

One thing that I think it important to make clear is that Longest-Claws was not the "leader of Defiance before Deepdark". He was the leader of a group that Deepdark took inspiration from and poached several of its members, but Defiance is entirely Deepdark's creation.

Also, it's nice to finally reveal that Lingonberry is just Deepdark's original name! He took on 'Deepdark' after he killed Longest-Claws. Although they are not separate characters, I'll be tagging posts that refer to Deepdark's past with just 'Lingonberry' so as to not spoil any future readers who may be looking through the tag.

The animals featured in the big panels on page 2 and page 9 are cameos from the PATFW Discord, many of which are Defiance fan-characters. All of the characters and their respective creators will be tagged under the cut.

I went to the local pride festival yesterday, and my favorite local mineral dealer was back. I bought a nice stibnite crystal from them last year, but this year I found something even better.

This is a specimen of elemental sulfur, on (I think) Celestine matrix. It’s absolutely incredible, I’ve never even heard of double terminated sulfur crystals. Sulfur so rarely forms large crystals at all, usually just large waxy blobs. But these gorgeous gemmy rhombs?!? I’m not sure the camera does it justice, but they’re SO CLEAR! If sulfur wasn’t so soft, some of these would be almost facet-grade.

I tried googling for comparable specimens, to see if I got a good deal, and I literally couldn’t find any. There’s nothing similar available right now. Even the dealer said that they looked through a huge lot of specimens and only found two of this quality, and they kept the other one for themselves.

Sulfur is an extremely friendly gem that tries to help in any way he can- which unfortunately, isn’t much sometimes. He spends most of his time around the school working with soft materials (i.e. paper making, clothes repair, fabric spinning) and collecting plant material.

I’m finishing up my finals now (ough . College senior) and once I’m free I wanna draw them together 🥺

1. What is his role in the story?

2. What does Schrodinger's cat have to do with the theme of the show?

Excellent questions! Allow me to answer them under this art I made of Schrodinger and the main gang eating fast food~

(also surprise, Schrodinger is huge compared to all the other catoms lol)

1. I'd want the first story introducing Schrödinger to be about the gang showing him that life is a lot less scary when you can learn to relax with friends. But after all the fun is over, he gets himself into a bafflingly huge mess when nobody's looking, and they have to figure out what makes him so mysteriously accident prone.

2. Catoms' core themes are the foundational principals of scientific progress: to withhold bias, to be cooperative, and to be incredibly curious! It's a show about solving problems and helping those around you, and Schrödinger needs all the help in the world getting over his fears when they first meet him.
