really torn because i have the opportunity to go east for the sheltie club's main show at the end of the month. and i would like to, and it will be easier now mentally to do it while im still in my doing terrifying things phase. but it doesn't really make sense going without showing Troja, but i don't want it to seem like we had one good weekend and now I'm coming out thinking we'll sweep, you know. i still know her faults and i know her CQ was from a very generous judge that specifically looks for the one thing Troja has in buckets. she'll also be out of coat by then.

i think it'd be good for all three of us, because we're *all* deeply undersocialized. and it's not like *i* have anything to lose, really. and i've never had the opportunity to just go do things before, and i only just now have the chance to be active in my breed, and and. but i still feel idk. conflicted.

I'm not a super duper expert on these things, but one of my favourite things about bunad silver is how the symbolism reflects the mishmash of folk belief in our country. This one is for Romsdalen and holds the shirt together at the throat.

On top, you have a four-leafed clover for luck. The sun wheels/sun crosses as symbols predate christianity in scandinavia. All things 3 or multiples of 3 are usually a reference to the holy trinity (and are common "magical numbers.") The droplets could be a few different things but I think these in particular could be barleycorn, for fertility and wealth.

#the rose at the top is also usually referred to as a sunwheel #thought 4 and multiples of 4 are iirc normally 'world numbers' (north/south/east/west) idk though #when used in Sunnmøre its referred to as a sun symbol #may have to look some of this up at some point. i had like a 45min lesson on it in 2010 😪

In the time after christmas especially kids & teens (at least now) would dress up in masks, go door to door and sing for food, bevrages and snacks. In the old times the ones who dressed up would sing for leftovers such as christmas cookies. If they got christmas decorations they would brawl like animals. Some also say it was used to scare kids.

This is a long tradition in the nordics, and can be traced back to 1546, Sunnmøre, Norway.

The tradition is not christian and can be traced back to the middle ages. The tradition has roots in norse traditions, but has gained some christian roots too.

Mourning Dress left - Winter Dress right

from Jørgenfjord(now Hjørundfjord) in Møre og Romsdal

The cut of these clothes can be dated to the 17th century, with only little adaptations along the way.

Here the silhouette has become more rounded and the stays/supportive underwear looks like they've been left behind or at least been drastically reformed.

The woman on the right is very likely married as she's wearing the married version of the the sunnmøre headdress. Its a "tobladslue" or two part cap, meaning its made of two of the same shape sewn together down the middle. The married version is usually darker or at least understated farbic, with a white part pinned in front, then secured by tying a silk kerchief around the head.

The girls version is cut the same, but tends to have bright patterned fabrics, has no kerchief and is secured by ties in the neck.
