Okay now that I've collected myself I'm going to abuse the polls to introduce my newest WIP idea (sort of). This one is very different from everything else I've written because it's autobiographical nonfiction bc my life is fucking insane. SO

so i started playing zelda breath of the wild and it’s a beautiful game and i’m obsessed with just hitting every monster i see with sticks, like i don’t even want a sword i just want the sticks, but more than in any other game i’ve played i feel like i could probably use someone sitting next to me and telling me exactly what to do

Still can’t get over my first experience with minecraft. going in knowing next to nothing. survival world. normal difficulty. spawn in the wooded badlands. break a tree. run around. got my little beginner chest with like salmon and bread and wood in it. night falls. mobs everywhere i am so scared. i have auto-jump on. i do not know how to sprint or do a critical hit or do anything besides walk in different directions and i also figured out how to swim. i have no weapons. i get killed. respawn at the spawn point. no items now. scared for my life. manage to get on top of a tree and huddle there until the sun gets up. get down from tree. still have no things. do not know to look for my dropped items i just thought ur stuff was gone when u get killed. stay close to spawn gathering wood and breaking dead bushes for sticks. make crafting bench. figure out how to make an ax. next night i am ready and i make a dirt shelter. just pitch dark listening to monster noises and occasionally breaking the roof to see if it was light yet. NEXT night i decide i need a better shelter and build one around the chest, the tree it is under, and the four torches. i am scared to break the torches because i do not know if this destroys them. i do not know how to make more torches for a stupidly long time. eventually i figure out how to mine. there are also huge ravines everywhere because i’m in the fucking badlands. my first houses are wood. just wood. three-ish stories with big platforms on top so i can see far and also look at the stars. i use trapdoors as rudimentary roof windows because i do not know about glass. i accidentally open and fall through them on and off. this is more terrifying when they dump me outside of my house near zombies. since i am in the badlands...there are no neutral mobs. this means there are no sheep. which means no wool. which means i cannot make a bed. i also have no light in my house except the four torches around the chest. eventually i am brave enough to experiment and break one with my first. i am able to pick it up and i am so happy. i place them sparingly around my house so i can see. i have no idea that monsters can spawn inside houses if ur houses are pitch black. however, by pure luck i made each of my ceilings, and by extent, the floors of the top levels, out of slabs, which monsters cannot spawn on. not that i knew this. i just thought slabs were the “roof making block” since they gave me more head space. eventually i do figure out how to make torches and i am super excited. coal is very valuable to me because i am very scared all the time and i am excited every time i find it mining. which is frequently. i am also in the badlands so i find tons of valuable ores and shit but i am just like “yay! coal!” and “jesus more gold? why do i need all this iron?” i still do not spam my area with torches because i am still in a guarded mindset with them. i make a lighted path between my houses and light the insides sparingly and that is it for my torch use. i have no idea how to farm so when i find, like, potatoes in a minecart i bake them which i will regret later. i toss out wheat seeds as garbage. i also find beet seeds somewhere but i just store them because i do not know how to farm. after a few failed attempts with my very small amount of seeds i stop and wonder if you cannot farm in the badlands. on a related note, when i eventually do find a meadow island and make my first joyous trip back to home base with a sheep i pushed into a boat, i lead it into a nice terracotta paddock and when i wake up and it is a floating piece of mutton and wool i am hit with the realization: i have seen no passive mobs...maybe...because they automatically die in the badlands. i immediately squish this thought. no, that can’t be. nope nope nope. there has to be a logical explanation besides that one. i play detective. at first i actually think the sheep was killed by monsters because can they do that? there’s no creeper crater...the fence is intact...the paddock was lit...could they be shot by skeletons? on the meadow island mobs seemed to ignore them, tho...i google it and wolves can kill sheep. i have yet to see a single wolf but what if...somehow...i fortify the hell out of my paddock and spam it with torches. i read something about the badlands having low light and wonder if sheep need light to survive. but then i recall my trip to meadow island involved stopping at a very small rainforest island where i put a sheep in my mining house. it would take me a while to hear a sheep eating grass, freak out because who broke that block?! (if I knew about Herobrine at this point I can only imagine how scared I would have been in that moment) and then see the grass block that is now dirt and figure out that sheep need to eat grass. my rainforest mining house had grass floor because i thought it was neat. i wildly wonder if grass will even grow on dirt blocks i place in the badlands, i legit cannot remember and it is killing me. and even in the wooded badlands where i see grass naturally it is a duller green. what if the sheep can’t eat it??? in the end i do not risk it and use one of the tiny forest biome sandbars next to my waterside badlands base to build the paddock. originally i had no idea these were forest biome bits i just marveled over how this little like twenty-block island in the middle of my little bay had weirdly green grass. and the oak tree...the leaves were so green. i thought it was because of the water somehow. after seeing my first non badlands/desert biome i realized the truth. more importantly. the sheep could eat this grass. it was definitely green enough. i still watched carefully to see if the grass would regen and was so relieved when it did. i still kept the former terracotta sheep paddock and just filled it with chickens. i knew those fuckers could live anywhere. i went kind of crazy when i first got chickens. they were in my house in the mines they were fucking everywhere. eventually i would also bring over a horse, but i  was tired out from the effort of doing all this with no leads and decided not to bring cows. instead i just spent a lot of time at the village at the meadow island and farmed cows there. that’s also where i did my crop farming. the abundance of resources was fucking killing me after so long in the badlands with next to nothing except so so many ores. and now, suddenly, i had so much food and even BEDS. it was unreal. still, I treated beds and torches as precious resources. i could not forget the days when i could not sleep and had to huddle in my dark houses until morning in the shelter of light from exactly four torches i was terrified to break. fishing rods were also especially valuable to me since that was the first non-zombie food i had access to, and i had to kill spiders for it and at the time i was terrified of spiders because they kept climbing on top of my houses when i was on the roof and scaring the shit out of me. but for a while i thought i would have to live on fish and zombie meat and nothing else. again, i got fucking diamonds from a minecart before i saw my first terrestrial passive mob. diamonds were nothing to me. sheep were the fucking gift from the gods i was unable to obtain until much later in the game. still, my experience makes me wonder if a person’s first spawn-point in minecraft gave them a unique early experience while learning to play the game. like, i did not know how to sprint, land a critical hit, or do basically anything until after i hit that meadow island and i watched a few minecraft youtubers and was like “wait...are they...running? in minecraft?” for real i was playing a different kind of difficulty mode where you don’t know how to fucking run and i didn’t even know it i just thought minecraft was at this level of hard for everyone. but i am also trying to think...is the badlands the worst biome to have for your first spawn? because i don’t feel like it’s the worst but...no villages, no sheep or cows or chickens. no flowers. just dead bushes that drop sticks. i was straight up living on zombie meat and the occasional apple drop from the oaks. since then i’ve had other worlds and i don’t think any other biome was quite as tricky for a starting point. desert was actually okay because i found villages really easy. tundra was fun. a little challenging but not that bad. rainforest is a bit of a pain but doable. there are still animals at least. i mean...is it possible to spawn in a cave system? or the nether? because i feel like that would be worse but i have only ever spawned on the surface and also on land. middle of the ocean might also be tricky for a fresh player. especially since you need wood to craft a boat. and also because beginners sometimes struggle with boats. like my sister swam everywhere because she couldn’t fucking drive the boat. when we played together she sat in the back and refused to be driver for good reason. but...it’s harder to gauge now, since you can only have the “first world beginner minecraft player who doesn’t know shit” experience one time. My sister tried to argue that her first biome was hard because birch forests have so many trees that get in the way when she’s running around and it’s easy for mobs to hide and she loses track of where her house is, but...there were literally so many resources right there when i visited I was like crying because she had so much stuff and i had to like transport everything from a fairly distant set of islands to my base and she was just like “ugh so many sheep they’re so annoying” and she had so much meat and MULTIPLE types of wood and i was so jealous because when i just started i had ONE WOOD and i ate ROTTEN FLESH and getting an apple was so lucky because I didn’t need to risk getting food poisoning the next time I was down to three hunger because I was also constantly hungry back when i was rationing ROTTEN FLESH to survive. and she had BEDS so she could sleep through the nights and i was just like “no! you have it too good!” so yeah...i’m curious to know if anyone else had an interesting first time in minecraft based on what biome they spawned in.

Today was the most traumatic day of my life:  I got completely drenched by a thunderstorm!?  ⛈🐢😱😱
As you may remember, I HATE rain!  I have only ever been rained on twice before, and both of those times, Mom rescued me after just a few drops.  But even then, Mom has never seen me as angry as when rain dared to fall on me!  😡
Today’s weather forecast didn’t include any rain, so Mom put me outside in my Aivituvin Wooden Tortoise House right after breakfast.  After lunch, a small thunderstorm came out of nowhere, so short that it was almost over before Mom could grab her shoes and I didn’t get wet at all in a corner.  Grandmom put an umbrella over my enclosure for the last few minutes of that first thunderstorm and confirmed that the weather forecast said no more thunderstorms for the day.  ☔️
But then a few hours later, another, bigger thunderstorm pelted down—and blew away my umbrella!  🌬😱  By the time Mom and Grandmom noticed, my enclosure was filled with puddles, and I was soaked head to tail and frozen in shock in a corner.  It took all my energy to crawl out of the puddles onto my food rock.  Mom rescued me as fast as she could, but I was so traumatized that I sat frozen in a corner even after Mom brought me inside.  How DARE so much rain fall on me?!?  😱
Eventually, I recovered enough for a special lettuce bum treat and fresh escarole and collard greens.  But I was still so upset that I went straight to bed after my noms!  🛌😫🐢
Mom says I have now proven that I don’t even have zero survival skills.  She says I have negative survival skills.  🙈

a blessing! regardless of whether my dad can fix my headphones or no, I just looked them up again to see if the price has gone up, expecting it to have doubled or more since I bought those headphones five or so years ago, and found that the price for those exact headphones is precisely the same as it was when I bought them!

Building a Debris Hut for Hunting or Survival:
Weather continues to be man's #1 survival adversary. If you're not dealing with it, you should be preparing for it. The first of 3 Laws of Survival, it is necessary to stay dry, warm and provide some level of protection from critters. If you do not have a tent or can't find a cave (unoccupied), use what is available in your gear or the environment. Resourcefulness is one of the most important traits of a great hunter or survivalist, especially when it comes to building an outdoor shelter. But when it comes right down to it, being sure that the shelter is strong enough is key. Build a shelter and bedding from the elements using natural debris, long grasses, tree branches and leaves. Digging a body-sized Snow Cave in a large snow mound will work when snow is available but when it's not: Step 1: Clear the ground down to the dirt, larger than the size of your intended shelter, to discourage critters from sneaking in Step 2: Build the Shelter Frame Step 3: Build a dry bed frame or padded area to stay off the bear ground which drains body heat Step 4: Create a roof with a tarp, survival blanket or leafy branches [Link] [Related Link] Related Resources: Make a Survival Lean-To The Priority of Shelter
