“Oblivious”

The Common whitethroat has found a high perch to his liking. Just as he starts to sing a low, steady hum becomes audibly in the distance. It grows louder and louder until suddenly 375 Clemens rushes past at almost 90 miles an hour. The train whips up a forceful wind, but the whitethroat keeps singing as if nothing happened. To him it’s just background noise. Clemens and his driver notice even less of the little bird. Two beings going about their life, so close yet oblivious of the other.

A quick sketch of an idea I’ve had for a while. I just love seeing how those little birds calmly continue singing while a 90-tonne steel monster thunders past at 140 km/hr.

February 8, 2018 - Common Whitethroat, Greater Whitethroat, or Whitethroat (Sylvia communis)

Breeding across much of Europe and into Asia, these Old World warblers winter in central and eastern Africa. They primarily feed on invertebrates in the breeding season, eating more fruits in late summer, and switching to mostly berries in the fall and winter. Breeding mostly between April and July, they build deep cup-shaped nests from grasses, rootlets, leaves, spider cocoons, and hair in bushes or tall grass.

Tornsanger (Sylvia communis)

Tornsangeren er en vidt udbredt sanger og en almindelig ynglefugl herhjemme. Den findes i åbent landskab med spredte buskadser.

Selvom tornsangeren ikke er specielt tillidsfuld, er det let at få den at se, da hannen ynder at sætte sig i toppen af en busk og hævde sit territorium fra denne synlige placering.

Arten er forholdvis let at genkende på den varmbrune vinge, mørkt hoved og hvid strube. Hannens hoved er gråt, hunnes er brunt. Den hyppigste forveksling er Gærdesanger (Sylvia curruca); men denne er noget mindre og er mat gråbrun på ryggen.

Individet her er en ungfugl, som er på jagt efter larver og andre fødeemner mellem blomster og urter. I løbet af de næste par uger skal denne, sammen med sine artsfæller, foretage det lange træk til vinterkvarteret i tropisk Afrika, så den har travlt med at bygge energireserver.

Common Whitethroat (Sylvia communis)

The Whitethroat is a very sommon warbler througout Europe and far into Asia and Africa. It’s found in all open habitats with patches of bushes.

Though the Whitetroat isn’t a paticularly easy species to get close to, it’s easy enough to find as the male prefers the top of a large bush from which to survey and protect his territory.

The species is recognisable for its warm brown wings, dark head and almost pure white throat. The head of the male is grey, the female’s head is brown. The Common Whitethroat may be confused with the Lesser Whitethroat (Sylvia curruca) but this species is somewhat smaller and has a dull greyish brown back and wings.

The bird shown here is an immature hunting for larvae and other such food items among the herbs and flowers. Within the next couple of weeks it will migrate to its winter quarters in tropical Africa. It needs to build up reserves for this strenuous flight.
