Our favorite neighbors are the marsh rabbits. We get excited whenever one comes out of the marsh behind our house to graze. But the place that we’ve seen them the most is up near the front of the neighborhood. They’re so cute, and Mom just swoons over them. “They just look like a crushed velvet Easter bunny.”

Arche 1723 — Lapin palustre (Sylvilagus palustris).

The marsh rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris) is a unique species of rabbit native to around where you are. They are only found around water, prefer walking to hopping, and flee into water when threatened
:OOO That’s so cool!! I’ve seen rabbits around on the farm before, but idk if any of them were marsh rabbits. There’s some watery areas nearby, including a somewhat-river down the street somewhere, but idk if that’d substitute for a marsh or swamp, lolol

The marsh rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris) is a small cottontail rabbit found in marshes and swamps of coastal regions of the Eastern and Southern United States. It is a strong swimmer and found only near regions of water. It is similar in appearance to the eastern cottontail but is characterized by smaller ears, legs, and tail.
Marsh rabbits display a blackish brown or dark reddish dorsal surface. The belly is a dingy brownish gray in most but can also have a dull white appearance in mainland rabbits. The leading edges of the ears display small black tufts with ochre on the inside. The black portions of the upper parts often change to a dull grayish buff in spring and summer months, returning to a reddish or ochre color in fall, followed by darker black in the winter. Rabbits of peninsular Florida typically display darker and redder colors with a cinnamon-rufous nape, feet, and legs. Juveniles display much darker and duller colors than adults.
Marsh rabbits have a number of features that distinguish them from cottontails and swamp rabbits. The short ears and legs are much smaller than that of a swamp rabbit. The tail is also much reduced from the bushy tail seen in cottontails.
Marsh rabbits are typically smaller than eastern cottontail rabbits. Adults from the Florida peninsula weigh approximately 2.2–2.6 pounds with a total length upwards of 17 inches. Adults from the mainland regions typically grow larger, weighing up to 3.5 pounds and reaching more than 17.5 inches in length.
The marsh rabbit commonly inhabits brackish and freshwater marshes, mainly of cattails and cypress. In southern Florida, they commonly occupy sandy islands and mangrove swamps. They are strictly limited to regions with ready access to water, unlike most rabbits. Often, they will enter tidal marshes, but remain near high ground for protection. Normal hiding spots include dense thickets of magnolia, black-gum, sweet-gum, briers, and cattails.
Breeding in marsh rabbits occurs year-round. Nests are built from rushes, grasses, and leaves. The well-covered nest is lined with hair from the adult rabbits. They are often found in dense thickets or swampy places completely surrounded by water for protection.
Marsh rabbits are more aquatic than swamp rabbits as they are not known to inhabit forests. They take to water readily and are excellent swimmers. To aid in swimming, the hind legs have less fur and longer nails than typical cottontails. When not concealed in dense thickets, the rabbits will stay submerged in muddy water with only their eyes and noses exposed and ears laid back flat. When they have been spotted, they will readily take to water and swim quickly to a new hiding spot or floating vegetation. Because marsh rabbits possess very short hind legs, they typically rely on doubling and turning when running to evade predators. This often leads to easy capture by dogs. When flushed out of hiding spots, they may squeal as they escape.
One very distinguishing habit of marsh rabbits is that they walk on all fours, placing each foot down alternately like a cat. Although they can hop like all rabbits, they are more agile in dense vegetation with this walking tendency. The major characteristic of the footprint pattern not seen in other rabbits is widely spread toes.
The scientific name Sylvilagus palustris derives from a combination of the Latin words silva ("forest") and lagos ("hare"), plus palustris ("of the marsh"). The marsh rabbit has commonly been associated with the group of swamp rabbits; however, this name is not a synonym and should not be confused with the larger swamp rabbit (Sylvilagus aquaticus) of Alabama through Texas. Marsh rabbits have also often been referred to as marsh hares.

some London firm bought the rights to name a recently discovered caecilian and they named it after tr*mp bc of his seeing the world in black and white and some other nonsense and I am outraged. the precious caecilian doesn't deserve this. amphibians need more conservation efforts not to be fucking mocked!
Well they do that on purpose to help conservation efforts. Zoologists found that when they named animals funny names or after celebrities it drew media attention and therefore the attention of the public and therefore more donations / general attention to the conservation of the animal.
Other examples are:
Sorting Hat Spider (Eriovixia gryffindori)
The skywalker hoolock gibbon (Hoolock tianxing)
Neopalpa donaldtrumpi
Beyonce horse fly (Scaptia beyonceae)
Kate Winslet beetle (Agra katewinsletae)
Hugh Hefner rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris hefneri) - who then went on to donate a ton of money to their conservation (see it works!)
It’s a neat little trick zoologists do to get people to care and it’s been pretty effective.

New Post has been published on http://www.lifehacker.guru/15-facts-hugh-hefner-proving-playboy-founder-much-smut-peddler/
15 Facts About Hugh Hefner Proving The Playboy Founder Was Much More Than A Smut Peddler
Hugh Hefner founded Playboy with just $600 in 1953 which grew to become one of the most recognizable American brands and allowed him to live every teenager’s fantasy. But the famous man himself wasn’t all fun and games as his life is often portrayed: Hefner was an educated and intelligent person who did not make it to the top through pure luck, as proven by these fifteen little-known fascinating facts.
1. Hugh Hefner graduated from the University of Illinois in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, also minored in creative writing and art
2. He reportedly had an IQ of 152 when he was in high school, effectively made him somewhat of a child prodigy
3. Hefner served in the army during WWII enlisting as an infantry clerk in 1944. He spent his downtime drawing cartoons for the Army newspaper
4. In fact, Hefner had quite a knack for cartoons. In high school, he created a comic-book autobiography called School Daze and at university, his cartoons were published in the college newspaper, The Daily Illini
5. Hugh Hefner met his first wife Mildred Williams at college, marrying in 1949, eventually divorcing in 1959. They had two children, Christie Hefner and David Hefner. He subsequently married twice – to Kimberly Conrad in 1989 and Crystal Harris in 2012
6. He used to work for Esquire as a copywriter in 1951 but quit after he was denied a $5 raise. Hefner quickly went on to found the little-known Playboy magazine
7. Playboy was created in his South Side Chicago apartment and as he told the Chicago Tribune in 1994: “the entire staff was my card table, my typewriter and me”
8. Hefner was arrested in 1963 for “publishing and distributing an obscene magazine”. The case was eventually deemed a mistrial, after the jury could not reach a conclusive decision
9. He was an avid Pepsi drinker. According to the New York Times, in the early days of Playboy magazine, Hefner burned the midnight oil with the help of Pepsi and amphetamines. Later in life, he switched to caffeine-free diet Pepsi.
10. The Lower Keys marsh rabbit was named after Hugh Hefner in 1984, also known as the Sylvilagus palustris hefneri
11. His oldest daughter, Christie Hefner, ran Playboy for 20 years. In 1988, Hefner announced that she would be taking over as CEO and Chairman of Playboy Enterprises Inc. She held the role until 2008.
12. Hefner is related to former Secretary of State John Kerry and former President George W. Bush. Hefner is allegedly the ninth cousin, once-removed from Kerry and the ninth cousin, twice-removed from Bush
13. He holds two Guinness World Records: the longest career as an editor-in-chief of the same magazine, and the second, bizarrely, is for having the largest collection of personal scrapbooks
14. Contrary to popular belief, Hugh Hefner has absolutely no idea how many women he’s slept with. In an interview with Esquire in 2013, he said: “how could I possibly know? Over a thousand, I’m sure.”
15. Hugh Hefner will be put to rest alongside Marilyn Monroe – the first cover girl to appear in Playboy
